october’s craft weekend

we had not had a Craft Weekend since May!
it was fun to get back in to the groove and bring new friends into the house to get crafty.
🙂
we felt a little rusty on the thursday preparing but we quickly remembered what we do.

shopping for activewear

JCPenney’s asked me if I would want to write a post focusing on their Activewear.
Ummmm… yes please!!
Shopping for activewear is one of my favorite things.
I feel like I am pretty good at it. Ha ha ha!
I went to my closest JCPenney to shop in person but you can definitely shop online too.
The activewear section was much bigger than I remembered!
I decided to try on lots of things and share what I liked because I know you are dying to go shopping with me – HA!
Something you should know about me and shopping – I try on EVERYTHING! If I remotely like it… I try it on.
Because you never know if it’s going to be the perfect thing if you don’t try it on!IMG_6415
I started with the Nike section.
The pink drew me in.
I love bright pink!
This hoodie was super soft and comfy!
I loved how the hood was tall & kind of slouchy (is that a word?)IMG_6433
And more pink… this half zip pullover was a good one!
If it has the thumbholes, I am totally smitten.
If it were up to me, ALL long sleeve shirts would have thumbholes. Why not?
It’s so comfy and warm that way.
Those Nike capri pants were a great print too!jcp5IMG_6417
This jacket was so CUTE!! It zipped up at an angle and that neck line was fabulous.
The fabric was the softest… I really liked this one!jcp6 And then weirdly…. I fell in love with these Nike sweats.
I thought I was trying on leggings – i probably wouldn’t have tried them on at all if i’d known they were sweat pants.
But these fleece-lined pants are probably the most comfortable pants I’ve ever tried on!
And I look slightly like a dude in those photos don’t ya think?
But they are so comfortable that I don’t even care!IMG_6440
I moved onto JCPenney’s brand called Xersion.
These jackets came in several colors.
I attempted to give purple a chance… no.
Not happening.
But I liked the navy!
And I loved the black… of course.
I love color but so often I lean hard on black.IMG_6449jcp3
If you didn’t like all the detail on the left jacket, another option is the more streamlined all-black version on the right.
Both very comfortable and perfect for starting out on a walk on a fall morning in Kansas.
a light weight jacket like this is a staple.IMG_6455IMG_6457
That’s a super cute coat!
Looking at it I was reminded of my training for the half marathon a few years ago… running 8 miles in the snow!
How did we ever do that?IMG_6443
I loved the detail on these Xersion capris!
(also wishing i’d gotten a pedicure before my shopping trip!)

So many great patterns and quotes!jcp1IMG_6459
If you are looking for black workout pants… i think you can find them here!

IMG_6463
I loved those pink patterned capris!
IMG_6470jcp2  the back of this shirt was perfect!
They had it in several colors but I focused on black or gray… again.
And I sized down to a medium for this loose fitting shirt.IMG_6475
This crazy soft sweatshirt with thumbholes was an easy decision.IMG_6476
I wasn’t 100% sold on the mesh shirt…jcp4
I like when I can find a longer shirt to cover my booty in my workout leggings.
I sized down from what I usually wear because it seemed to fit me better.IMG_6486  I had too many choices of things I really liked!
(That is one downfall that happens occasionally when trying on so many things)
i came home with the Nike pants! (and a pair for talby too)
i also got the Mind, Body, Spirit top and the light blue loose tee.

that was kind of fun to go shopping “together” wasn’t it?   🙂

of course they are adorable!
and we LOVED the Olivia books and show but i am not sure that qualifies us for pet pig owners.
it would be clean and an inside animal… like a dog.

what would waffle and Stanley think?

what do you know about mini pigs?
great idea or horrible idea?
where does someone even GET a mini pig?
please share any insight into pig pets that you might have.   🙂

these girls of mine come up with some pretty wild stuff!

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - OH my goodness – that is hilarious! Today, I took Riley to preschool, we walked in the door, and the cutest little two month old pig (named Louie) was all wrapped up in a blanket in their teacher’s arms. Apparently he is the new mascot and he’ll be allowed to walk around the classroom in a few weeks. So…. I guess it is a thing?

Jennie - I know not a single thing about mini-pigs, but just wanted to say that if you get one, you must get him or her four little red rain boots. Because that picture was the most rediculous/adorable/hilarious thing I’ve seen all week. 🙂

Jenni - Just catching up on your blog and found this. Which is HILARIOUS…because Mailey (my 13 year old) has been begging for a mini pig as well. And has gone so far as to set up appointments to meet with breeders. No lie. She has researched caring for it, life span, etc… We live in a neighborhood with strict “no farm animal” rules and think this might fit within those perimeters. But she wants to go before the board and ask permission. I tell ya, I love my strong willed fight for what she wants girl. And one day she will make a kick ass lawyer. For now….we shall look at mini pigs on the internet.

rebecca - So, my son works a part time job at Schlotzsky’s deli and had a customer come through the drive thru with a mini pig. He said they have dog treats for dogs so he offered the girl lettuce for her pig and she accepted!

Melanie - I read your comment section because my son really wants a mini pig too. I never took his request seriously until I saw your blog post about it! I thought maybe I was being a little harsh. Glad I read the comments! We will not be getting a mini pig any time soon!! Too funny.

Lisa - The one with the rainboots!!!! I am dying!!! 😍

anita - We have 3 pigs … they did get kicked to the back with the other big animals because they did get so big (supposedly are teacups … but are pretty big). But I’ve heard there is a type called Julianne that does stay small. I would buy another pig for sure! We loved having ours indoors … they potty train in a day, are easy to train and can be great pets if trained correctly. Ours did find food and eat whatever they could find, but so do our dogs. LOL! Even now our pigs out back, come when you call them, love being scratched and probably still remember their tricks … but too fat to do most. LOL!

mama lola - have you ever heard of esther the wonder pig? they thought she was a mini pig and now she is an enormous full grown pig! check out her dad’s and facebook page here… https://www.facebook.com/estherthewonderpig?fref=ts

she’s actually an amazing force of life, full of personality. she eats a vegan diet, is house trained and lives each day to the fullest.
i would be very cautios about getting a mini pig!!!!

Beth Ann - My daughter REALLY wants a pet pig. They are actually super smart and can be trained. However, there is no such thing as a mini-pig or teacup pig. Pigs grow, and Grow, AND GROW. and they eat and Eat AND EAT. A ‘mini’ pig is between 100-200 lbs when they are full grown. They need space to be outside and need a ‘buddy’. My sister is actually a farmer and she laughs at me all the time about ‘the time you really thought mini-pigs were a thing’. ssshh…. piglets are adorable still.

Ruth - Our friend Fran had a mini, like the others have said, it grew and grew and GREW! Not so mini, and no shocker it acted like a pig, if you can believe it! Tread cautiously…

misty - I had a “mini” pig except he did not stay mini…when he learned to open the fridge my mom said he had to go. A farm they said…but they are cute, when they stay small! ha

Sheila - Just say no to the adorable mini pig, mama. It’s a bad idea. Pigs are meant to be bacon, sausage and ham, not pets. They root and dig, they smell terrible, they are not loving or loyal, they will eat their babies, and they bite. They’re really sort of vile. We had a hog farm for years and no one can convince me they would make a good indoor pet.

Rebecca - The only way piglets stay “mini” is by improper feeding (i.e. starvation). With proper care they grow into pigs that weigh in the hundreds of pounds. Rescues are full of “mini” pigs that grew up. Yes, Esther is a full grown “Mini” rescue pig. RESCUE A PIG! 🙂

Lisa - One of the girls on my daughter’s softball team has a mini pig, her dad brings it to some games on a leash. From what I’ve seen, it poops non stop! It was smelly and gross!! It also did this snorty/whiny thing, which could only be quieted by constant treats. Constant treats = constant poop. I don’t know its age, but it was tiny as pictured. Definitely one of those things that is cuter in a picture than real life.

Shelly - I have read horror stories where people thought they were getting a mini pig, and it ended up growing to 200-300 pounds! Because really, how would you know? I did marketing for a swine breeder facility and when I toured , the smell about knocks you over. And they do get mean.

Dawn Hagle - Get them a guinea pig! Much smaller, lives in a cage but can be out and held. My daughter spent hours making clothes and bedding for hers.

Katie - I grew up on a farm – we had pigs – a far cry from having a pig as a pet in the house, but… no. Don’t do it!

CiCi - Same thing happened to a friend, google Ziggy the Piggy.

Cathy - Those pictures though! 💗🐷💗

Laura Martin - Good lord…don’t do it. A family I babysat for got a “mini pig” that turned into a 200 lb monster they kept in the basement and were terrified of until they finally gave it away.

Erin V - We had one… for approximately 3 days! While they adorable as can be, they don’t EVER shut up and oink day and night HAHA And they will root into your carpet, the edges of your cabinets, your feet… we sent it to go live on a friend’s farm and it (and we!!) are as happy as can be with that arrangement 🙂

Laura - It’s actually estherthewonderpig on Instagram.

Laura - Be very careful. We had a friend who got one and it ended up being 500 lbs. Check out Esther the Pig on Instagram!

Debbie H - I concur with Jane. I had friends who got a “mini” potbelly pig for their youngest daughter when she was about 5. Not so mini. It grew to be enormous, meaning not at all what the mother was bargaining for. It lived to be about 12, if I recall. Yes, smelly, they root up your yard – meaning they do all the things pigs do. Go to the fair or a farm. And keep living through others on pinterest. You have ENOUGH other things going on in your life. Tell them if they really want it that bad, they can get it when they are full on adults and live in their OWN place. 🙂

Janel - I think mini pigs grow to about 50-60 ibs? Med size dog? They usually outlive cats and dogs…20+ years???and they are messy like pigs…mud, water, dirt…which may make you a bit crazy with the clean up. I think males are not recommended as pets as they become quite unruly with maturity and can grow tusks even. Perhaps you will consider visiting a pig farm….they kinda smelly.

all the things.

so much goes on everyday.
i know it’s true at your house as well.
we are at games several nights a week… JV and middle school and high school.
there’s church on wednesday nights.
and annie’s games on saturdays.
but i sure do like all of it.IMG_6164IMG_5292IMG_6547scott had a catch at the homecoming game a few weeks back that was really fun and wild.
he even made it on the local news  🙂IMG_4478

the catch was lots of fun for Scott but in that game the highlight for MOM was when Sean was sent into the game while Scott was still on the field!
up till then they were playing at separate times… if sean went in it was because the score was so high they took the seniors out and started playing the underclassmen.
but in that game… BOTH my boys played together for a long time.
i am LOVING IT!!!
i love to have them both out there together – freshman and senior.
heart eyes! heart eyes! heart eyes!
i still have no idea what is going on… but that is probably not going to change.
my brain can only hold so much & i don’t think football rules/stats/plays are going to be moving in there anytime soon.

subject change:  i cleaned my closet out. it was redonk and i couldn’t wait another minute. 4 bags donated… everything organized…. i was so happy to have it done.closetthe left side was my finished product until i found the perfect shoe holders for my space.
I got 2 of the ClosetMaid Stackable 15 Cube Organizer and stood them up the longer way to fit between my box of cardigans and my box of heels that i MAY wear again but probably won’t ever actually wear again.
and i hung my boots on hangers?!!closet2and shortly after kicking it in my closet – i took over the craft room/catch everything room at the Craft House.craftroompeople keep asking if i am reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up but i am not.
this is all just out of my need for some decluttering.
too much junk and stuff… and apparently that what that book talks about.
it seems like everyone is reading it!
maybe i should read it too?

IMG_6156IMG_5110talby’s team did fabulous in volleyball this season.
i cannot believe they are done already! it’s her favorite sport.
i know that every year they just just get better and better… i can’t wait to watch her smash it as a high schooler!IMG_5312
annie’s 5th grade team – adorable!
talby helped out with the coaching a little bit and really loved that too.IMG_6587IMG_5613
fall has hit us in kansas. it’s warm in the afternoon but chilly in the morning and evenings.
i think the leaves will go crazy by next week.orangeIMG_6828meIMG_7170last night we had Snack Dinner.
what’s in the fridge/freezer/pantry?  pull it all out… snack dinner!quatroIMG_6813this is a scene from real life right here.
dinner is started… people are talking & eating… boys fresh from football practice – no shirts… messy table… all the good stuff.dogswaffle and stanley are majorly dorky dogs. they love treats more than anything. they can get some air!unoi saw these magnets and was cracking up!PicMonkey CollageIMG_6231tresthe Craft house paint job continues. craig and our boys are changing out the purple for navy. i can’t believe we lasted ten years in a purple trimmed out house?! ten years is enough. navy trim for the win… in two years when it’s done. jay kay. it’s a huge job though… definitely going to take quite a while.  chairi found this chair last week at our thrift shop.
it was soft… comfy… in mint condition… and only $20. sold. it’s living at the Craft House.
i am dreaming up making a personal creative studio in the big room on the 3rd floor and that is where i want that chair. 🙂FullSizeRender 13FullSizeRender 14beautiful isn’t it?   HA HA HA!
i can see all the potential there though.
SO MUCH POTENTIAL!!!
another project that will take lots of work but i love dreaming about it.

Ayca - I simply love your striped mug! It’s so you 🙂

KWolff - I’m pretty sure you just summed up my entire world in one post. Football, soccer, band, volleyball, choir, work, home improvement projects…that’s all I have going on these days. Sometimes I honestly feel like I have to think hour by hour instead of day by day. My boss laughs at me because she never knows what I’ll be doing at the end of the day. I know that I will look back on it someday and miss it all. So I’m doing my best now to enjoy it, even on the days/nights that it’s pouring rain and the short people are cranky.
Thanks so much for sharing your experiences. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one! 🙂

mollie's mom - When we pull out whatever is in the fridge we say we are having CORN. What’s for dinner? CORN! Clean Out Refrigerator Night!!
And I loooove that big empty attic space… the potential!!

Erica - I’m love your blog! Never commented before but have to know where you bought your red shoes?!

Julie - Oh that studio space – drooling here -it will look absolutely fabulous.

amy jupin - these are my favorite posts.
i dig the random.
that’s where the real is.
and i miss you like a crazy person.

Leslie - Hello- Thanks for always posting such great stuff. I look forward to your happy colorful pictures, the inspiration it gives, and the real life element. So many blogs are pretty and staged, it’s nice to see teenager life in action. 🙂 And that chair! Oh man, if ONLY I could find those treats at my thrift stores. I keep telling my husband I want to fly to Kansas to go thrift shopping. He thinks I’m nuts. 🙂

Jan - Meg,

Love, love, love your posts. I would love to hear in a post how maintenance has been for you after the diet plan you followed with those containers. Are you still doing that or what are you eating these days? You look fabulous. I have lost weight before but never ever maintained it. I always put it right back on. I would love to hear your story or tips.

Tiffany - Great catch, talk about timing!

Jen - I just love you and look forward to your posts. Thank you for spreading joy, for keeping it real, for keeping it colorful, for being awesome. I saw my cousin and her husband this summer. Her husband is the one whose grandparents used to own the craft house and where his dad grew up. Do you know what the Dody family used to use that 3rd floor for?!

Tiffany Day - you are amazing and delightful!
love peaking into your life!!

xo

Katie Skiff - This is why I love your blog. Ypur life sounds just like mine. Ha. I think I may actually know what they are doing at fotball, and they make some crazy call that never gets explaine. Lol.

Diane - I read your blog every single day – LOVE IT!! So beautiful, inspiring and real. THANK YOU! I don’t normally comment but had to today. I LOVE FOOTBALL. So I just had to say, that was an AWESOME, AWESOME catch!! It’s like be pulled an Odell Beckham!! Awesome job, kiddo!!!

Suzanne - Love the cleaning of the closet – it is on my list to do this week. But I need to finish recovering 3 more (had 7 total) camper cushions and make 3 roman shades. I think cleaning sounds more appealing especially since neither of the sewing projects are for me. Anyway, desperate question – please! What are the leggings you buy? Cannot find where you put it in your previous posts. Thanks a ton!

life hacks…

SheKnows & Perfectly Simple bars by Zone Perfect asked me to share some “Easy Life Hacks for Busy Moms”
i immediately asked my friends to share what they do because i thought i didn’t do anything hack worthy.
BUT once i started looking, i saw several things we do on a daily basis that save time and sometimes money too!

  1. Make/plan meals ahead of time.
    FullSizeRender-25
    this could mean
    – cooking freezer meals – several different meals and cooking a lot in one day
    – planning your meals for the week and grocery shopping accordingly
    – doubling your meals each time you cook and freezing half
    – making one dish and cutting it into portions to eat during the week
my trick to eating better is the last option (for myself not talking about feeding my family).
i make veggie, protein filled dishes and then split them up into 8-10 portions in the refrigerator.
when i need something to eat – it’s already made!
that saves me time AND keeps me from making a poor food choice.

Karyn - I always felt a little weird painting my nails in the daycare parking lot before driving to work. Thanks for normalizing this for me. 🙂

tonya - Yum! what is the recipe for the sausage and egg yumminess! please so share! I know you said where the basket you use for plastic and paper goods is from, but I can not remember!
thanks- have a great week!

Melissa - What are some of the recipes you use for you meals you individual separate?

Marie - Ditto what Jodie said!! 🙂

Jodie - Hello-I am very interested in what is in the dish at the top of your post that you put in portions…can you share? 🙂

Thanks–
Jodie

wall inspiration

i have a tiny… teeny thought about making a wall in my house more fun.
i don’t know how brave i feel.
also i don’t know if i can handle actual wallpaper…
i have stripped SO MUCH wallpaper in 20 years!
but it IS sooo pretty!
i honestly like all of these choices because what’s not to like?!

i like the boldness of the wallpaper look but i really LOVE the wood walls/shiplap that is everywhere now too thanks to Joanna Gaines.
i can’t decide which i like  more!

what is your favorite new trend?
are you ever putting wallpaper in your house again?
is it less work or more work to put up shiplap?

clearly i need to narrow down some of my inspiration before i do anything!
🙂

but it’s fun to dream about!

Staci Torgerson - I adore wall treatments too. I’m wanting to do something super bold in my tiny half bath but don’t know how far I should take it.

Would love the resource for the wallpaper with the 2 beds as well as the vertical shiplap.

Let’s us know what you decide!

Heather S. - I’m a wallpaper hater. Like you, I have spent countless hours getting LAYERS of it off of walls (our last house had 4 layers the people just kept putting on top of each other). Don’t wallpaper over wallpaper, and don’t paint over it. Don’t be that person. Besides – when the wallpaper begins to peel (and it WILL) your paint job looks bad. I’m all about doing a job well from the start. Stenciling is very cool, though. Trendy and on point. easy to paint right over later. I’m a fan of the fun stripes, chevron, or polka dots. I am NOT a huge floral fan in the house….flowers belong in the garden! Tee hee. :)~

jen - Also, do you have sources for the wallpaper pics? Some of those would be perfect for my master and I’d love to know where they’re from. Thanks!!

jen - I had wallpaper hung in my house and I LOVE IT!!! and can’t wait to do it in several more rooms. I like the look of the wood as well but it’s too rustic for my taste. Which is ironic since I live in CO and most everything here looks rustic.

Jenny B. - I want to cover a small wall with a bunch of different colored yardsticks. I also love the inspiration pic of the teal laundry room with the Amy Butler wallpaper. I don’t think you can go wrong with either wallpaper or wood as long as you love it. 🙂

kris saia - From someone who has suffered through both wallpapering and nailing up horizontal boards in the last few months: the boards are MUCH more forgiving. We messed up in the kitchen and there’s a little gap in the boards at one point… looks like we did it on purpose, no biggie. There’s a little screw-up where my polka-dotted wallpaper in the bathroom doesn’t quite match up in the corners and it’s very unbalancing when you’re sitting on the john. ha. The boards can come down easily when I’m sick of them and we can recycle them into something else… the wallpaper was expensive and I will feel guilty taking it down because it cost so much. First-world problems!

KWolff - I died a little inside when I saw that laundry room with the floral top and turquoise cabinets. It’s so beautiful!
The first plank wall you shared it gorgeous too. 🙂 Thanks so much for the gorgeous inspiration!
I will probably never fully commit to wallpaper but I could sure get behind some creative painting.

Jacci in Ohio - Just do it. It’s just a little wall, right? I painted a small wall in my entryway pale pink with orange/red triangles over 2 years ago and I still love it so much. It’s the wall at the bottom of our stairs. So cheerful to see every morning. And even when I am ready to paint over it, it’s easy to paint one little wall 🙂 http://www.woohooie.blogspot.com/2013/03/i-got-little-crazy.html

missyeveryday - Love the wood walls/shiplap trend but oh my goodness – the damage to the drywall when the day comes you want change. I despise stripping wallpaper but I hate drywalling even more lol

Rebekah - There is bad wallpaper and good wallpaper. That wallpaper up there is, as my silly college roommates and I used so say, G-U-D GOOD.

KatieV - I love wallpaper! I wallpapered a small bathroom at my last house and still miss that awesome little room. 🙂 I say go for it!
In my current house, I don’t have wallpaper but I “polka-dotted” an accent wall with gold paper. I cut a couple hundred 1-inch gold circles using a paper punch, then I put them on the wall with strong double-sided tape. It’s easy, and it’s husband-pleasing since I can always take them down. I can send you a pic if I didn’t explain myself well. 🙂

Jeannine - Dude… removable wallpaper! It’s the best of both worlds – wallpaper without the pain in the butt when removing it! Tempaper even has one that actually looks like white brick… Drool.

Patty - SHIPLAP or WOOD WALL!!! You know it will be easier to take the wood down and fix the walls when you want to change than it will be to take down wallpaper!!! ARGH!!!

Monica W - Wallpaper, Wallpaper, Wallpaper! The new wallpaper comes done much easier than your mother or grandmother’s wallpaper! Use sizing on the wall first and when you are ready to take it down it comes off really easy. Also if you grow tired of the wallpaper and it isn’t lose in any spots you can paint over it. Professionals do it all the time!

Shellie - I love the black and white with the green! It looks awesome to say the least.
I’d say live with it until you want a change. We’re always doing projects anyway, right?

Deb Meyers - Don’t worry about dating your house. Everything we do dates our house…’cuz time marches on. Just don’t spend a lot of money or time and then it won’t hurt to re-do it.

Go for the wallpaper! Do an accent panel if you don’t want to do an entire wall or even an entire room. I want to see what you choose! Loved the ideas you posted here.

deb meyers

Lisa - Will shiplap be the 70’s wall paneling of the 21st century? I’m afraid at some point it will date my house. I think wallpaper has the potential to be timeless.

Angela - My husband did a pallet wall in our downstairs bathroom. He said he will never rip up another pallet again in his life. Once we had the wood off the pallet, it was SUPER easy to put up. It looks so good! We decided that aged fencing would also do the trick without the strain of ripping it from a pallet, so if we ever get the urge to cover another wall in wood, we will probably just scavenge it from neighbors who are re-fencing.

I am iffy on wallpaper. My husband is anti, so that solves it for us. 😉 However, you can use decals rather than wallpaper for some of those designs, like the little crosses. I still agree with commenters above, though. Stencils are probably the way to go… If you move, it’s easy to paint over.

Kristen Kerwin - I’ve fallen in love with Lisa Congdon’s removable wallpapers…the artwork, and the fact that I can change my mind since it’s not psycho-permanent! Also, I know that the sisters from A Beautiful Mess are huge fans of removable wallpaper, and COLOR! Whatever you choose to do will rock, though, because you have such amazing style. GO FOR IT! 🙂

Heather - I agree with Abby! You can use a stencil, or some of the easier ones just go for it! Like the stripes, all you would need is some painters tape! Honestly they’re all fun options though!

Abby - Meg, think about doing a full wall stencil. It’s sort of like wallpaper-lite. And so many options. I have both stencil and wallpaper in my home. They are my favorite walls and make me happy EVERY TIME I see them. I got my stencil from Cutting Edge. Great inspiration too. Enjoy!

Katie - DO IT!!! – I think wallpaper is “safe” if it is an accent wall and not all over! I would love to wallpaper a wall or two, but my husband, who grew up helping his mom put up and then remove wallpaper, is standing firm on never putting it up again… I think if done tastefully, it will be beautiful! And what’s not to love about shiplap?? 🙂

Stephanie - I looooove shiplap. So much! But I also love the polka dot wall paper!
