so summer is here.
the kids are home with no routine.
how does it creep up on me every single year?!!
we need that summer list made.
we need a plan and a bit of a schedule.
more reading and drawing.
less tv.
more crafting and baking.
less screen time.
more swimming. more sunshine.
less basement darkness with video games.

on friday… i started this project and it didn’t go too well… at first.
there was crying and door slamming and drama.
it had nothing to do with the project but everything to do with moods, feelings, sleep deprivation and new routine.
but i stuck with it.
i knew my mood needed adjusting too so i stayed right at that table with my owl i drew and kept on coloring… for like an hour!
coloring makes you feel better – it’s a fact.
and then one kid came back, saw the nearly finished project and said “WHOOOOA! Can i make that too?!”
🙂

and even after that… “WHOOOAA!!! annie did YOU draw that? I want to make one too! how did you do that?!”
i got to listen to her teach it from the other room.
pretty rad.

what i say in the video (in case you don’t feel like watching) is that this is Continuous Line Drawing.
(or continual line? i don’t know)
it’s where you draw but don’t lift up your pen when drawing… everything is connected.
it’s very flowy and swirly.
not many straight lines… just letting the pen move freely.
then filling in each spot with color.

i made a super amazing video on how we made these owls!
just kidding.
i made a very average video of me drawing an owl for over 3 minutes.
but it may help you overcome your fears if you watch it so that you can make this project with your kids… i hope.

these were a few different designs we drew.
and then you can see this one side by side of the drawing and the colored in drawing. owl1
each section… each time a line intersects with another we changed colors.
almost.
these take a long time to color but totally worth it.

you could use crayon… colored pencil… oil pastel… or markers like we did of course. owl3 owl4 owl5

now get going.
continuous line drawing is calling you.
and of course you could draw anything… it doesn’t have to be an owl!

we’ve been listening to this album Rend Collective Campfire II on repeat over here.
i want to go that campfire – they even have bunting!

61-drgedhnl and we are still HUGE fans of the first Campfire album too.
i can’t say enough how much i love both these albums.

12 crafts for kids

i used to make lots of crafts with my kids.
i am not anti-craft now but they are older and its just not how we spend our time together as often.
BUT even if they are from years past… they are still great and fun craft projects!
maybe your kids (or grandkids) are really into art right now?
i put together my top 12 favorites of all the projects i have blogged over the years.

1. Water Color Butterfly Canvas

i LOVED these butterfly punch canvases.
Talby still has her hanging in her bedroom.
they are beautiful! these canvases POP!
we used this Martha Stewart Butterfly Punch to make the butterflies.
i looked other places and this was the best price! Those peeps at Amazon know what’s what!

2. Giant Squids

these were SO FUN!
we loved the book I’m the Biggest Thing in the Ocean and we made an art project to go along with it.
at the end of the post about making these is a video of teeny tiny annie reading the book!
time is a jerk.

3. Beautiful Butterfly

a favorits book at our house was ALWAYS The Very Hungry Catapillar.
i remember turning the last page and saying “And he was a beautiful butterfly!” so many times.
we created our own Eric Carle inspired butterflies by using construction paper.

5. Rainbow Windcatchers

i think these are probably my FAVORITE of all the crafts we ever made.
and that’s saying something.
they are just SO pretty hanging in the windows and blowing in the breeze.
we may need to make these again!

6. Robin Nests

we had a nest of robin’s on our porch and their nest was fascinating!
this project was inspired by our mama robin and her three babies.

7. Homemade Chalk Paint

this post is one of the ones i go back to often.
it’s the perfect images of summer.
i LOVE this post… sun tans… zinnias… kids everywhere… paint everywhere.
these were the good ol’ days for sure.

8. Crazy Owl Continous Line Drawing

there is even a video with these!
this looks hard but i promise you it is NOT and your kids will feel like experts!
you need to make this one for sure!

9. Happy Sunflowers
these happy flowers hung in our kitchen for years!
there is an endless way to create with them.
it’s also a very easy project. 🙂

11. A Galaxy Far Far Away

you guys this was such a pretty project!
it looks so pretty too wherever you hang it up.
my kids had a good time making this one.

12. Melted Crayon Art

this post has been one of the top pins in history… like for real!
its been on MSN… The Huffington Post… magazines and newspapers all over the world…
everyone loves color!
it took very little time, a canvas, a big box of crayons, hot glue and a blow dryer.
everyone should try this project at least once. 🙂

now… it’s time to get your supplies and get crafty with your kids!

lucky number 13.

how can we be at thirteen craft weekends already?!
each one has been so much fun!

we get the house all set up for our guests to arrive.
we clean… organize… arrange… set out swag from our sponsors… and we get excited!

craft supplies are so pretty!

color is everywhere in the Craft House.

my shop is open during Craft Weekend too… and SOON to be back online.
i have been saying it for a year but for real… it's coming soon!

our guests arrive and kimberlee prepares our meal.
we pass out margaritas while everyeone gets to know each other….have you made these margaritas yet??

steph and daina drove all the way from canada!!
they asked if they could make their special pico de gallo and we let them go crazy.
it was delicious!

after dinner we get right into crafting because really…. why wait?!
it is what we are all together for right?
they begin on their aprons around 7:30…and finished by 2:30 AM.
night owls in this group.

choosing the fabric is the hardest part of making the apron!

debbie finished hers VERY quickly…a very experienced seamstress!
and she whipped up her pretty flower too.
she was FAST!
i LOVE her fabric choices!

kimberlee always makes BIG breakfasts that are beyond delicious.
i am all for chocolate in the morning!
and frosting on cinnamon rolls…. oh my.

after all 16 of us get ready for the day… that is a lot of women…
we head out for our field trip to our favorite store and the barn.
it's fun to ride ALL together like a school trip.

talby happened to be playing her final basketball game that day in Marion at the same time we were shoppping so i snuck out and cheered her on! I was so happy to get a peek at my family in the middle of CW.

then i was picked up on the way to the barn.
i can't ever get over how much they have every single month.
i am a junking addict.

Oggie and Dennis run the store and barn and are fun to catch up with every month.
that is Oggie with steph and daina…. what a bunch of characters!

i love sharing my favorite place with all these women!

everyone did a little show and tell when we got back to the craft house.

everyone finds treasures.

i found this.

it was a no-brainer.
when you find something that is this perfectly your style… you almost HAVE to say yes.
yellow? chippy paint? working doors, shelves and drawers? turquoise ON THE INSIDE?
there was no way i was saying no to this.

i can't wait to fill her with craft supplies.
i think i will name her Sunny.

we got on some comfy clothes and got back into crafting.

shannan led a canvas project… we made infinty scarves, wire words, t-shirt flowers and wood bunting.

when they are all working and chatting and creating….this room is A M A Z I N G.
it is such a happy place.

we had A LOT of instagrammers at this craft weekend working the #whatevercraftweekend hashtag.

this is my canvas project in the middle…. and i actually started this canvas 6 months or so ago with ashley ann.
finally finished it at THIS craft weekend.

all of our girls lined up by their room order…

and all of their beautiful, special and well earned aprons!

craft weekend has been a complete blessing in every way.
what started as a "let's try it ONE time to see if we like it" has turned into this wonderful, JOYful job
that both kimberlee and i are loving every minute of.
what started as a weekend of making crafts has turned into helping women find their creativity again.
giving them an opportunity to BE CREATIVE… to rest…. to refresh their spirits.

i love craft weekend.
