craft thursday #11

this craft came from Art Projects for Kids.
she has a great site full of ideas for all ages.

my kids were missing their craft time because they were WAY into it today.
which makes me so happy.

i gave them square paper (the sketchpad paper cut smaller into a square)
and a pencil.
they had to draw a tree with no leaves where each branch went off the page.
IMG_8754

IMG_8758

then with a crayon or oil pastel….color the tree.

IMG_8766
then fill in every space with a different color.

IMG_8765
they loved this craft.
i was surprised by that but i am not complaining.

the girls made two each.

sean took two days to finish his because it had to be perfect.

Jessica - Did this with my students today after one of them said “Look at that tree…. leaves all gone”. We enjoyed it, so thank you and happy birthday!

Kacey - I love this craft! And your header matches – so cute!

Gina - I love this project-might have to do it tomorrow with the kiddos.
Oh and Happy Birthday! Hope it was wonderful.

alice - i love perfectionists! how perfectly perfect! and a fun craft!

lorel - We do a similar lesson with my kids at school, except we use the paint for the tree, and oil pastels for the negative space. Most of my students really like it. Check it out on our artsonia page: http://www.artsonia.com/museum/gallery.asp?exhibit=282243

jennibell - I love this craft!!! Actually, I love most of them, and love that you find them and try them first so I don’t have a lot of good intentions that fail in the end b/c something is missing, it’s too hard, etc. — ha! I work at the YMCA in YPlay and usually have the older kids (6+) and am going to do this with them during Fall Break — it’s just like summer. . .YPlay gets all filled up with kids who are usually in school. This will be fun!

Krista - They came out beautifully! You can tell Sean really took his time, I love Craft Thursday pictures!

barbara - love this! looks like stained glass, almost.
& happy belated birthday, too 🙂

jennifer - That is really cool!
Love your new banner too.

Four Flights - Beautiful! I didn’t know Crayola made pastels…good to know.

Christina - So simple, and so beautiful! I’m doing this soon!! All three of mine could do it – bonus! 🙂

Erica - Sean’s looks great!! Nice easy project!!

Nicole Q. - Love it!

julia - It’s so fun seeing their finished projects.

Kelly - it is perfect too! that looks wonderful! Kelly

Melanie - That Annie is as cute has ever!

mandy friend - Sean sounds like my 9 yr old! And you are a way cooler mom than me letting that stuff on your table!

Emily B. - It’s fun to see each personality come through their artwork! And how cool that they had missed the craft-time… I hope I’m as faithful with my two-year-old to develop this side of her.

Sara's art house - Love this!!!!!!!

Stephanie - Beautiful! We are swamped with homework, sports practices and lessons over here…no time for crafts. When my boys were young we played with playdoh and crayons, now they are onto bigger projects like helping in the yard and soon it will be time to carve our yearly pumpkins for halloween. The only other “crafts” they do is during art class in school and they have made some neat paintings I have kept, now I just need to figure out what to do with them and how to preserve them…any ideas?

laurenjean - sooo cute ! i was just telling a friend of mine about all your cute crafts !! Now I must try this with my girls 🙂

Becky @ Farmgirl Paints - Little artists they are! So pretty each one.

Ashley Stinson @ The Hillside Home - So cute!!! Can’t wait ’til my little one starts painting and coloring like this… lots of colorful pieces to put in frames. 🙂 Your kiddos are adorable.

Sandy - Sean’s time and hard work paid off. They all look great.

Dana@Bungalow'56 - I look at this post, and I realize I need a big wonderful coffee/craft table. Then of course we would become a wonderful crafty family. It’s the table right? Please tell me it’s the table: )
Dana

Jennifer - Way cute! Love all the bright colors…
I’m so loving all your craft ideas for the kids. I am about to be a full-time stay at home mom again–yippee!!, and will definitely need to try some of these ideas to keep my 4 year old busy! 🙂

craft thursday #10

inspired by eric carle's beautiful butterfly.

IMG_6168

i doubled pieces of construction paper and cut lots and lots of shapes…totally random and free hand.

some pieces were wing shaped or body shapes but the rest were just odd shapes.

and they each had a glue stick.

IMG_6152

IMG_6170

IMG_6163
they got busy.
and stayed busy for almost 45 minutes!

IMG_6173

IMG_6154

IMG_6182

IMG_6193
talby….whimiscal and happy.

IMG_6191
 annie d…..colorful with extra details.

IMG_6195

sean's…..identical pattern and perfectly symetrical…sooooo sean.

IMG_6199

m
ine was the yellow one.
i made it before we started as an example for them.

they were planning who they were giving their butterflies to while making them….i love that.

and just for fun…

sorry if I repeated this idea.

anne c - sean’s looks like an african mask…so cool!

Trina McNeilly - I love all this butterflyness…. I so need to get crafting with my kids.
Just so you know… you so inspire me….. 5 kids, a happy marriage, love for God, a successful & fun blog, your own photography business & I’m sure a number of other things that you juggle. Thanks for sharing you’re life with all of us!
xoxo
Trina

Elizabeth - Thank you for the great project! It inspired me to do it with my little one…and blog about it!
http://www.catchick6creations.com/?p=1444

crystal beutler - You do the funnest things with your kids! Hey were your ears burning this weekend. I was sitting at the table with a group of women at Spark and I heard this Australian woman name Jasmine mention your name. I said “Do you know Meg? I just love reading her blog.” Then Blue Lily, Jasmine and I had a sweet conversation about you!” You definitely have to come next year. You would seriously love it! And I would love meeting you in person!

Christa aka BabbyMama - I love the swirly mouth butterfly! What a fun idea 🙂

Wendy - Love this idea! This makes me think of the amazing Butterfly House in our area. If you are ever in St Louis, you must stop and visit – it’s simply magical.

Biz - Super cute! That was one of my favoite books as a kid. Here is another crafty idea. I assume that you have a large amount of scrap fabric so this might be perfect for the kids. You could get smaller wreath forms so they could hang them on bedroom doors and wouldn’t take as long to make.
http://busybizblogs.blogspot.com/2010/09/boo-tiful-rag-wreath-tutorial.html

Becky @ Farmgirl Paints - Awesome craft. Butterflies are my favorite!

www.google.com/accounts/o8/id?id=AItOawnkCcuN414qEtfLGnNw6EqiJPfBvmQbse0 - How cool is this project!!! You know, I have been following your blog now for alongtime, and I have never left any comments before, but I just have to now… Not a day goes by that I do not fit you in my busy schedule, I mean seriously I am addicted to checking out what you do next with your family, or just you being YOU!!!! You make me laugh all the time, and you also make me think alot too!!! I have always admired you for so many reasons, but that would take a entire email problay to explain, but for no other reason than the fact that you are a Mom as I am with four daughters, and I admire all the things you try to do with your children to keep them busy and enjoying this life in a fun and creative way… I hope you know as I am sure by now you do, how Wonderful you really are!!!! Have a great day!!!!

candace - Have you ever seen a video of Eric Carle at work? It is fabulousy amazing! He sits in his studio and paints tissue paper with watercolors. Then, he cuts them up to create the actual images you see in the books. I LOVE Eric Carle for the richness of both his books and art!
Your butterflies are great!
Went to his website and found the link below. The video I saw in college was a lot more interesting but you get the idea here.
http://www.eric-carle.com/slideshow_paint.html

Emily

Jenni McIntire - I had your blog open in Google reader. My 4 year old son saw the pictures of this craft and begged me to help him make a butterfly, too. He especially liked Talby’s. He said, “I want to make my butterfly just like that.” Thanks for the idea!

Thanks for all the inspiration!

Dandy - I love how all the kids have their own style.
I’m dying over that butterfly bouquet!

Beth - Very cool! That first “inspiration” picture, the butterfly wand. WOW!! Check out http://www.jenstark.com (the red line at the top is sculpture, which is my favorite. I think you’ll really like her stuff — not butterflies, but bright colors and cool paper sculptures. I’m trying to figure out a lesson using her work for inspiration, The butterfly wand inspires me too!!

Penny - The shot of Talby cutting is just beautiful. She is deep in thought. Love it. Great idea, too.

Beth - GREAT craft!! So pretty. I’ll be trying this with my kids for sure very soon. THanks!
Beth

Holly - so pretty Meg!

Michelle - This is a great idea Meg. I love it because it’s easy enough for my 3 year old.

Tam - Oh the butterflies are beautiful. Great idea. Eric Carle books have always been a favorite of mine….

Claire Wood - Love this. We have done a similar craft with the book, ‘Color Zoo.’ I cut out basic shapes in a variety of construction paper colors, and the object is to use the shapes to make different animals. My kids got very creative. Another book/craft/project we’ve done is to have a ‘Pinkalicious’ Party. My girls love Pinkalicious and so we made pink cupcakes with pink icing and had pink lemonade.
Your crafting totally speaks my Love Language.

firefly hill - Beautiful! I love that you used Eric Carle for inspiration…

Kat - Beautiful Meg.
You do the most awesome and inspiring craft with your kids.
One of these days I will do some with mine.

craft thursday #9

IMG_5105
we made rainbow wind catchers.
they are so pretty.

IMG_5093
you will need:
paper plates
paint
glue sticks
a stapler
streamers

IMG_5094

IMG_5102
i cut paper plates in half.
they painted a rainbow on the back sides….both halves.

IMG_5106
it doesn’t have to be a perfect rainbow.
or in perfect roy g. biv order.

after they were dry….
we used a glue stick to add the streamers.
i cut my streamers in half because their paint lines were small.
so if your streamer is 2″ inches wide and 15″ in length then i cut the width.
leaving me with two 1″ x 15″ streamers.
i just folded up my streamer and then made one cut through the middle….simple.
in theory you would add the color of stremer under the color of paint.

but it’s art….that means you get to do whatever you want to!

IMG_5098

beautiful.
IMG_5132
my new favorite craft thursday project.
YAY!!
it’s lovely when the window is open and the breeze blows in!

IMG_5175 IMG_5243

glue streamers to the inside of both halves of the plates.
then we stapled the two plates together.
i tied a knot in a loop of yarn and then stapled it in when putting the plates together.

Corrie - Hi, I found your blog through OhDeeDoh, and I am so excited to see that you love and support Word Made Flesh! I went to Asbury College, where Chris and Phileena also went, and WMF has had such an impact on me over the years. I visited them in Kolkata (Calcutta) years ago, before I had my kids. craft thursday #8

stained glass candles came from aimee at artsyville.
she has a really cute etsy shop and i love to read her blog.

IMG_2387

is there a proper name for these candles?
i bought them at our grocery store in the ethnic foods isle.
there is one isle at our store with anything considered "ethnic"

when i first moved to kansas i called my friend lisa in IL. from the grocery store for her yummy salad recipe.
she sent me looking for rice vinegar.
i said "they don't have it"
she said "go to the asian food isle."
i said "i"m in it….it's about 3 ft wide by 3 ft. high"
we about died laughing.
you gotta love small towns.

anyway….craft thursday?

i removed the label of the Virgen de Guadalupe.
(craft stores would probably have these already without the labels…or you could use a jar and a votive….)
(also, i saw them at walmart today in the candle section without labels….$1.65)

i gave the kids some watered down glue and paint brushes.
i had them paint sections of the glass with the glue and then lightly put a tissue paper square on the glue.
the less they touch with their hands….the easier the craft.

IMG_2409

IMG_2415
talby turned her candle upside down and worked her way up.
that was a good plan.

IMG_2413
when the tissue paper sticks to the glue then they can paint over the top of the paper with more glue.
then it all lays flat and the colors blend so nicely.

IMG_2419
if it gets too hot….just take your shirt off.
it's ok.
craft thursdays are free from the bondage of clothing.

IMG_2433
i took about five minutes before we started to cut a bunch of small-ish squares from tissue paper we had.

IMG_2447

when the glue is dry then they are done!
we were careful not to get any glue or tissue paper on the inside of the glass.

happy crafting.

AND….one last thing.
i told talby that craft thursdays are over and she said "WHAT!?! We HAVE TO BE DONE?!"
she looked so bummed that i quickly answered "NO! we don't have to be done! we can still make crafts after school"
that made all the crafts all summer even better.

***
school started today!!
    full reports to come….

Floating Candles for Weddings - Having kids of my own, it is great to find cool craft ideas that can allow them to show off their creativity. Something like this is great to do when they start picking on each other in the summer because they are getting bored.

Candles Floating - Beautiful projects made by kids. I sooo loved it!

kristin - my present is on our dining room table…gracing our suppers together.
so sweet.

Becky @ Farmgirl Paints - Love this idea.

aimee - oh WOW! thanks for the mention, meg! they look terrific and i’m totally impressed that your kids tackled the project with such verve!
you’ve inspired me as well – i’ve been grappling with how to manage the growing links on my sidebar, so I decided to do one like your “happy things” instead – a short, rotating list of hand picked posts from other worlds. i’m calling it “side trips”. thanks for the idea!

Amanda - Love these, they are so pretty, and the kids are adorable!

Trish - Great Craft! We’ve only done it with baby food jars but I like these tall ones. In Canada school starts Sept 7. I’m curious when your school year ends since you start 2 1/2 weeks earlier than we do…

Katie - I love it! And I love your blog. It’s one of my favorites!

Holly - very cute candles! Hope the first day was good!

ashley - Oh how fun! I wonder if a four year old can manage the fun…
I was going to say what Betsey said. My family always lit them when something was going on or someone needed a special prayer. My grandma has one on her rosary table. They’re so neat when lit.

Rach - Love the project. What a great idea and they will be so colorful when they are lit.
Curious to see how the school drop off/running went. 🙂

Betsey - The candles are patron saint candles, the one in the picture (Virgen de Guadalupe) is the Patroness of Mexico. One would light her candle when they are praying for financial issues and to receive special blessings. They are used for various reasons, symbolic of something or someone, that one is praying for. I have seen some of these candles in Catholic, typically Mexican cemeteries on headstones, etc. They are used for rememberence, and to honor someone.
In Catholic churches, often there are candles there (plain glass/no picture) parishoners can light (and give an offering of $1.00) for some of the same reasons. Maybe an anniversary of someone who died, or a recent death, a specific prayer request, etc.
But, your kids candles are just beautiful!
I love your Crafty Thursdays!
Thanks for sharing!

Dawn - Our Dollar Tree has tons of them, I think both with and without the graphics.

Gemma @ Musings of a gem - Hi Meg!
I spotted these Candles in Walmart on a holiday in FL last year…great craft!! So pretty : )
Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting on my little blog…it was a great surprise!
Love Gemma X

dianereeves - I love this idea! My girls would love making these and it is totally doable on short notice when boredom strikes.

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - Dearest Meg, praying for you today!
I am praying for peace and strength and rainbows and butterflies to come your way!
Kate

Kimberlee J. - Talby’s your girl all right. Loving craft Thursday and meaning it!

Staci - BEEYOUTEEFUL!!! Love em 🙂 Can’t wait to hear the full reports 🙂 Our school started today…I thought I might leave skidmarks trying to be the first one out of the parking lot….alas, I tried to restrain myself from RUNNING to the car 🙂 heeeheee 🙂 Both my boys wanted to ride the bus this morning…WHAT? The FIRST day of school??? I said yes, sent their cute little selves off and beelined it up to the school to make sure they made it 🙂 I felt like the whole time I was forgetting something 🙂 Oh yea, that would be bc my van was empty 🙁 Hope you have a blessed day!!!!!!!

Taylor-Ann - Meg- Cute craft idea..simple, and fun.
I hope the first day of school went well for the kids and you. ;o) Even though my son had been in daycare since he was a baby, I still cried when I dropped him of a kindergarten.

Lisa - I hope you had a great run/cry after you dropped Annie off! 🙂 Our ‘baby’ started K on Tuesday and he was full speed ahead!

Janie Fox - I am off to Walmart to get these so the grandkids and I can do it tomorrow! Great idea! Enjoy your kid-free days- it is pretty darn good when they all drive off in the bus! The day will be gone before you get half done what you wanted to!

Sandy - Great craft idea. Annie is adorable. If Talby doesn’t look like you (especially in that picture!) no one does!!
Can’t wait to hear about the first day of school. My son starts at the JVS (career center) on Monday.

Melissa Morrill - We call ’em Jesus candles 🙂

Heather - Great idea for a craft. They’ll probably look cool when they’re burning.

a pocket full of posies - one of my favorite projects ever! so pretty! and yeah- for craft Thursdays through the school year too!
Blessings!
Jill

Krista - Awesome idea and so easy! We have a week to go until school starts, and we’re doing this craft at our house for sure! Funny you mention the ethnic section of the grocery. Ours is huge, and I live in the middle of nowhere. Yesterday while shopping alone (love that) I was marveling at all of the strange foods and drinks that I have no clue about. Coconut water w/ bits of coconut floating inside it? Intriguing!

Laura - I’ve done this craft for years, and my favorite was a cheap flower vase I covered with Egyptian tissue paper leftover from one of those school wrapping paper fundraisers. It was premium paper, so it was a beautiful gold metallic with hieroglyphics. Anyway, when it sat in the sunlight, it was gorgeous!
The fancier the paper you use, the more gorgeous these are. You could have the kids do some Christmas votives with Christmas print tissue paper as teacher gifts!

Jaime - Meg…what a great craft! They turned out nicely!
Being in Arizona… in some stores, our ethnic sections are what the hold the hot dogs and mac n’ cheese! 😛
Hehe, just kidding! 😀
Glad to hear we will be seeing more crafts! 😀
Can’t wait to see how they all did their first day of school!!

julia - A few months ago I was in the aisle at Target that had these candles. I was trying to get one of every picture. After a few minutes, I looked over and my daughter was looking at me like I was nuts. I thought, “I’m not even Catholic, why am I doing this?” So I put them all back.

Julie - Those are very pretty candles! Wishing you all a great school year!! 🙂

Katy Stone - how fun and simple! i hope you’ll post an update once they’re lit and burn down a little. i bet they’ll be magical! 🙂

craft thursday #7

hey look…..it's actually thursday when i posted craft thursday!
cool.

stepping stones was on the summer list.

i could make this stuff every day….well at least for a week.

IMG_2190
there are cheaper ways to make these….but i didn't want to mess up…or risk them not turning out.
so i went with the tried and true KIT.
we bought 3 boxes at hobby lobby.
and the plastic molds too.

IMG_2191
i made each one sepreately.
very easy….1 cup of water and the bag of cement.
mix.

IMG_2198
till it looks like this.
you can add more water if it seems too thick.

IMG_2199
pour it in the mold and smooth it out.
i used the paint stick and then i shook it side to side and THEN i patted it down with my hands.

IMG_2194
then i let them go crazy with beads, glass bubbles, tiles, broken dishes and our junk collection.

IMG_2195

IMG_2201

IMG_2204

IMG_2209
what i love about mosaics is that you can practically use ANYTHING.

IMG_2208

IMG_2214

IMG_2207

IMG_2366
talby's stone.

IMG_2368
annie's stone.

IMG_2365
sean's stone.

this project is messy and takes prep.
but i loved it.

my mirror was one of my favorite projects i ever made.
i need to make more stuff like that.

there is not enough time to make all that i want to make!!!

11 Simple Projects to Make Your Backyard More Fun - […] DIY Stepping Stone Step this way. This backyard craft from Whatever… involves a bit of prepwork but is still totally entertaining. It’s a great way to use up […]

just Wondering, Lucy

These garden stones are 10 times better than anything you can buy in a store! I love that it’s an activity any age can do!

heidi @ wonder woman wannabe - now, that’s craft-tastic! 😉

miss r - They remind me of I Spy! Very fun.

Krista - We made these this summer and I thought of you (silly, I know, but when I craft you come to mind). The kits make it really easy. I love that you keep all of the broken dishes and other stuff that would normally get thrown out, so you can recycle them. I wish I could remember to do that.

www.Kellyloves.wordpress.com - so cute! i’ve been wanting to make some of these forever!
http://www.kellyloves.wordpress.com

Tanya @ Life in 3D - So fun and so fab!

ruthi - love your blog and the creative inspiration you share!

Heather - These are so great! I made two when my two oldest were still tiny and did their feet and hands. Still one of my favorite things. What wonderful keepsakes!
I just love Annie’s face when she does crafts- she looks so serious and focused!! Precious.
Blessings,
Heather:)

Heather R. - They turned out AWESOME!!! I want to make these :).

Nicole Q. - Love these. My mom has done one with each of her grandkids at age 2 of their hand prints.

Emily - i love all of the fun crafts you do! They all look so fun but my daughter is only 2 and they all seem so far away! Any fun craft ideas for younger kids?

Kelly - I think it’s so wonderful how you do crafts with your children!

Jessie - Looks like they had a blast!…now I’m wondering what the rest of your kids middle names are 😉

shelly@familyblt - So fun–I love all the things your kiddos chose to use–so unique!

julia - it’s so neat how, when doing an art project, each child’s personality shows through. your son’s looks like a guy tile for sure!

katy - those are so much fun to do, just remind people to not actually “step” on them…….they’ll break…we have one that has not broken and we’ve made at least 5 of them. 🙁
yours look sweet!!!

Tammy - fun project! we did it last week for our Craft Tuesday! Great minds must think alike!!

adrienne - fun mom… very fun mom!!! they are all wonderful!

kristin - okay. i want to do this.
i LOVE it.

amandadod - Those look great! I have that same kit sitting in my garage waiting to be done … I may have to pull it out today 🙂

Holly - very cool!

Laura Phelps - fabulous!!! The kids and I made NIck a stepping stone for Fathers Day..it made the whole trip from LA to CT without breaking, we put it outside, and the next day, Luke broke it. ugh
Now, you need to stop crafting and fill out our application for The Amazing Race!!!!!!

AshleyAnn - You make me wish I had done a craft each week with the kids…looks like yours had a great time. Love the mirror!

Debra - We plan on making some when we move back Stateside. Love ’em!

not really what i was thinking they would make….
but still fine.
BEING creative is the point.

mine was fun.
i couldn't stop….mine took twice as long as theirs.

IMG_0005
what do you think?
too much?

and then as soon as we were done…..

IMG_0017
CRASH.

ugh.

yay for craft thursdays.
it's still worth it….even with pounds of sequins on my floor.

Vicki - seriously, i had the best laugh i’ve had for ages over your ‘too much’ comment! and then the crash scene….oh my your words made me laugh.
great crafting!

marnie scott - that mess makes me smile. that is COMFORT. i might have to copy your M. and the mess that goes with it!

sallymander - I’ve never commented before, but your projects are always awesome 😀 A little tip for the spilled sequins (or beads, or buttons, etc.), rubber band the leg of a pair of pantyhose or a knee-high over the end of your vacuum cleaner nozzle and vacuum away. Be sure to hold the nozzle pointed up in the air when you turn it off!

Stephanie@Geezees - Thanks Meg, this is a great idea to keep the kids busy!!

Georgia - Hey Meg, i had a thought, have you thought of doing a ’52 weeks of craft’ book? For like a personal ‘photo’ book something to look back on when your older or to pass to you kids when they have kids …
xx

shiela - Hi Meg-
Are you planning on traveling to Southern California between now & the end of this year? Would you do photo shoots if you decide to travel here-CA? Your photos are just such jewels!

Rebekah Brummel - You are awesomely creative and I am DESPERATE for creativity. I need ideas for an adoption announcement for my 5 year old son fresh off the plane from Ethiopia. SO tired of the standard 5×7 photo card… . . . . I need a CREATIVITY HERO, any ideas?????

kristine - omg! if only it was food that waffle could come lick up!! what a great way to use up some stuff too! love them all!

Sara - This has given me a great idea for first week art project at school! thanks Meg!

Jennifer - Love this craft! It’s my favorite one yet!

Lynn - Look what you started, Meg! I love all the kids letters, but that M has to have a prominent place in the house! Love, love, LOVE it! : )

heidi @ wonder woman wannabe - Your M is simply MMMMMMMarvelous! Where, oh where will you be displaying it!?

tasha roe - CUTE!

Holly - looks like fun Meg! We love doing crafts around here but since the kids are back in school and cheer we may have to do “Craft after we get home from church on Sundays”lol. BTW we are making Craigs meatballs tonight!

Georgia - Oooooh Im loving this idea!!!
Im going to do it too, just little old me so i can have it displayed in my flat.
Im the clumsiest person alive, so them sequins would be a regular occurance in my home.. hehe
Great Craft day!!
xx

Heather Lea - Giant craft “M” = shop update?!

Henry - Wow, very interesting thursday you had there. You did an amazing job at creating those. Awesome!!

merlin - Wish I could be a kid for a day at your house…what fun!

nikki - Why do craft days always turn into MESSY days?, but you are right, it’s always still worth it. Your M is quite pretty!

amy jupin - i see you made it to hobby lobby afterall!
i’m with kimberlee on this one–bead-encrusted letters will soon be sweeping the nation!
did you see your “r-e-a-d” letters in the fall pottery barn kids? looks like they are stealing your ideas too! 🙂

Staci - It’s NEVER too much for you Megan 🙂 Your M is great!!!! And wow! Sean’s S is so perfect 🙂 Cute cute 🙂

shelly@familyblt - I LURVE your m! So fun!

Kp - Looks just like my dining room, but missing the glitter paint foot prints! Our poor pup always has something
Sticking to the bottoms of his paws I.e. Stickers, sequins, play do, paint…love it! Thanks, too, for the link to Deep Space Sparkle – my youngest picks her projects and is ready to start by 7a.m.!

j - I love your “M”.

Dana@Bungalow'56 - Megan,
A woman can never have too many sequins.
Dana

Gekakel - Your craft Thursdays really rock!

Anna Marie - YEAH!!! You’re with BlogHer now! Congrats to you Meg!
(Love your “M”…definitely not too much!)

Becky @ Farmgirl Paints - Awesome! I love this idea I think the best of all your craft projects so far. Yours turned out fabulous M:) Have a great weekend.

Sara @ It's Good to be Queen - this is a great idea! i love seeing your messy, painted table. my white table gets like that every single day. yay for soft scrub with bleach. 🙂 it makes me sad when so many moms don’t let their kids create because of the mess. i think creating is the stuff of childhood….well life actually. thanks for this.

Niki - NE-VAH! There are never too many sequins. Except maybe on a drag queen outfit? Maybe? LOL
I LOVE this idea! You rock, you creative Mama!

Julie - This is fantastic! I always like to see how your kids create to fit their own styles – and your M is magnificent!

Beth - I can so relate. I taught a polymer clay class at the rec. center this summer. There was SO MUCH clay on the floor it had to be scraped off. I did some of it, with help from my students, and then left the rest. I’m sure the custodial staff didn’t care much for me that week!!! The mess is kind of a let-down after the creating, isn’t it!?! Love your M. Definitely not too much.

Lorie - You are a wonderfully creative mommy! I love how you let your kids create! Great idea!

Lori - Yours is absolutely not too much – love it and love the idea. Craft stores really do rock. And the nice thing is that it didn’t cost too much, I’m sure.
Ooh, I hate it when something like that turns over. I call it my spaz moment. It’s almost as if you can see it happening in slow motion. Ugh.
enjoy your weekend.

sandy toe - My girls would love to be in your family with all the art!
sandy toe

Ruth - there is no such thing as too many sequins. love these!

Sophie - So cute! I might have to use this kind of idea to make my initials to put somewhere, though I think mine might be completely solidly covered in buttons. I LOVE buttons.
And also, I know the feeling with all the mess. I have a huge tub of beads, like the little teeny tiny ones that you have to use stupid small needles for? I had an accident with it the other day and I’m still finding hoardes of tiny beads everywhere. Not fun.

Katy Stone - ahhh!! I LOOOOOVE your’s!!
How, exactly, did you do it?

Kat - I was also going to ask where is the “M” going?
Love, love letters.
I am on at my Hubby to cut me out some letters so I can make words around our house.(like your EAT, but maybe others like Joy, Home and family.)
Love what your kids did with theirs, very much a reflection of each of their personalities.
Great idea Meg!

Anya - Love love love your craft Thursdays! You can’t have fun without mess.
Where are you going to put your ‘M’???

Brooke - Thanks Meg, another good idea to keep the kids busy! I love my daily visit by the way!
Cheers, Brooke

Gemma - I love this idea! I am going to try and recreate the “EAT” sign you have as I love it : )
Gemma x

Maria - i love your crafty thursdays…our summer flew by and I’m not sure how many we ended up having…but I have been promising the boys one more before school starts…so I’m thinking craft saturday…something with sharpies and watercolors…although I may bring in some oil pastels too…

Kimberlee J. - I see in the not so distant future button-dazzled initials going up in people’s homes all over America…and the world…and I love it!

Kristi - What a good mama you are. Funny how their initials spell a word. And how Annie spelled her name backwards. I decoupaged with scrapbook paper, my new niece’s initials for her nursery and now my daughter is in the process of doing her own name. I need to just chill and let her do it her way instead of trying to “suggest” papers for her.

craft thursday #5…in michigan

while on vacation jenny said "well….it's thursday! what craft do you have planned for us?!"
ha.

our internet was out like it was 85% of the time.
so we had to go with a picture of a craft i wanted to do but couldn't look up the details.

THIS ONE right here at deep space sparkle (again).

drawing fish with sharpie markers.
painting the picture with watercolor paints.

i actually ran back in the house as we pulled out the driveway leaving for vacation to get my paints.
craig looked at me like i was crazy.
i said "you'll thank me if it rains!!!"
i brought my big sketchpad paper too.

IMG_9420
it was cloudy outside.
perfect time to take a break from the beach.

IMG_9422
fish drawn with a crayola marker and not a sharpie.

IMG_9424
no one was listening to me about using a sharpie marker.
when you don't….and then you paint….the marker bleeds.

DSC_1462
IMG_9425
dangurs fish.
i LOVE that.
jake used a sharpie.  good boy.

IMG_9423
sean rarely  follows my instructions.
mrs. burns…..i feel for you.
he used oill pastels for the whole thing.   no marker or paint.

DSC_1454
no marker.
paint only.

i had one out of five following instructions.
i am not a good teacher.
oh well…the point of craft thursday is to CRAFT.
not to follow my instructions.

IMG_9421
this was mine.
annie asked "mom….are the other animals laughing at the squid cause his eyes are so wrong?"
(cheryl just pointed out that my picture is also not done in sharpie!  ha ha ha
i forgot.
i was using oil pastel because that works also with water color paint.
so sharpie or oil pastel or crayon works if you want to paint over it without it bleeding all over.
thanks cheryl.  :)

IMG_9426

there was actually LOTS of art at this table over the week.
chicago jen's kids are very artistic.
dave made his own sign that hung in the kitchen all week.

sad.

as i have said many times….it was a great trip.
so good.
loved it all.
too short for me and jen.
i am ready for a trip with just the grown ups….where to jen?

michigan rocks.
dave and jen you are the best.
you are definitely….with out a doubt….our best first hand mates!

Melanie - Great photos!

Jenica Cory - Was this a house rental? We vacation near St. Joe and are looking for a house for next summer. If it’s a rental could you pass along the info, please! It looks amazing!

amy jupin - this whole series of posts have made me miss my best friend like crazy. and i loved the pics (of course). your photography is really shining meg. really so good.

Nicole Q. - I want that tire swing in my yard too!! I also want the adults only trip too!!

Mindy Harris - awesome post, as usual. love the sunset pictures. the last picture is just darling but your shirt is blue rather than purple. ha.
k-state is my alma mater…so my allegiance will forever lie there.
hugs from our family!

Jodi - What a fun trip! Your pictures just convey the energy and how fun everyone is! I read everyday! What an inspiration you are!

Stephanie - totally LOVE your blog!!! I look forward to every post. It is just such a happy place, even when you are having a bad day. I like that it is just REAL! Anyway, I have a big question that is going to rock your world….what kind of water colors do you use? I’ve been wondering this forever. They are so vibrant. Mine always look so pastel. I hate that. I need bright, happy colors. Actually, a post on your favorite art supplies would be great. Thanks a bunch. I hope you are having a wonderfully colorful day!

Jess Mead - Love the fish pictures!!!! Thanks for the Sharpie tip!!!

mkpoggie - I nknow how you feel! Our best friends live in Minnesota (we’re in AZ) and when the four of us are together we forget to relish the time because being together just seems so natural…Then, when vacation is over, we go, “Oh, no! Where are my friends?!?! That was too short! I didn’t stare into your faces enough! Panic! Panic! Panic!”

tammy kay - the painting looks like so much fun!
I don’t think I’ve ever commented before. “HI”
Love your blog and all the color that it brings each day.
Glad you had such a wonderful time with your friends!

Tara - Great pics…fun crafts…we’ve done several of the sharpie/watercolor crafts from Deep Space Sparkle this summer…ALL THANKS TO YOU! 🙂

tara pollard pakosta - You are so blessed to have friends that you can travel with!!! I can’t think really of any couples that we could travel with and have such a great time!
from the legos, puzzles, painting, reading to all the fun at the beach = an amazing triP! cant’ wait to see if you scrapbook these?!
tara

Beth - P.S. Oil pastels and then watercolor are one of my favorites!!! I taught a “water media” class last week and we learned about an artist who did that (Paul Cezanne). Very cool!

Beth - Your trip truly looks idyllic. So nice to have family times like that! Great memories. And I laughed out loud at your comment about following instructions. Creating is the most important though, I so agree with that and strive for it, although in a room full of 25 kids . . . sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of that!!! And the bleeding marker — natural consequence. Sometimes we learn better when things go just like that, hmmmm maybe mom (dad, Mrs. Burns) did know what they were talking about when they said to use sharpie or crayon or oil pastel 🙂 I still remember and love Sean’s comment during printmaking last year “this is actually fun” (like he was surprised by it!).

nichole shinners - I love all the pictures from Michigan. I am originally from there and ( now in cali) I try to sneak back as often as my husband lets me! There is nothing out here like the lakes, the wide open farms and fields, the sun setting over the corn fields, and chasing the fire flys. I try to get my girls back there as often as I can, so that they have those same memories stamped on their hearts. Pure summer Magic!

Andrea - You have inspired me! I want to plan a vaca to Michigan right now! Where was this?

Julie - The tire swing picture is my favorite; had one growing up and every child should have one! Sean’s lego space shuttle ~ WOW!!!!

Heather R. - Sean did great with his Lego set! Annie presenting a sunset…sweet. I want a tire swing, too, now.
Great pics, as always.
~Heather R.

Sharla - Love them all – especially the tire swing photo, Annie pointing at the sunset and the lego letters. I love the Lauren’s shirt too! 🙂

Jennifer - Looks like a blast! Did anybody run into your face while you taking the slip n’ slide shots? Anything for a great pic!

Leslie - An entire family that you can vacation with and everyone has fun. The hubbies like each other, the kids like each other. Priceless!! We are blessed to have three of them and often go on huge family vacations together. We are off to the lake for a long weekend before school starts. So fun!!
PS Lauren’s shirt rocks!

donna - hi meg. as always ~ great pics. i live in michigan and we always seem to get such a bad rap here – i am glad that you are showing the blog world that michigan really isn’t so bad. however, everything you do always looks so fantastic – even if it’s your piles of laundry – love it!

Marina - Where did Lauren got that Where the Wild Things Are shirt??
It’s awesome!

Becky @ Farmgirl Paints - So fun. I feel like I was there with you. Great craft project too. I looked up that site and did one with our girls a week or two ago. We did the hot air balloons. I didn’t make one though. Now I want to go back and do it again. Oh and you NEED a tire swing. That would be a perfect addition for your family.

deb meyers - so fun! I love that you share your vacation : )
I think Lego puts “16 and up” on its boxes so sons who too soon pass the Lego stage feel that it is still okay to spend some time fooling with them (as my 16yo has done this summer, and as Chicago Dave proves), and the younger guys can feel cool and ahead of the curve. STILL … impressive Sean!

Staci - Pure awesomeness!!! Wanna go there!! And way to go Sean!! IMPRESSIVE!!!!!!

Laura Phelps - I am surprised that Sean didnt go for the sharpies….
I love you Meg
that is all
really
I miss you
and I want to craft with you
and vacation with you
and have our kids run around til mid night together

Cheryl @ a pretty cool life. - Um…did you forget to use Sharpie on your drawing too?? LOL Great pics. Looks like fun!

Kim - I live in Michigan. Not far from where you were on vacation – had I known…… Think of yourself as a celebrity and some random stranger comes up to you and says, “Are you Meg from Whatever?” That would have been fun! Come back any time to Michigan!!

Julie - I just came home from my second Michigan trip this summer and now I am ready to go back again!
These are beautiful pictures and memories.

tara - i don’t know why but this made me cry.

Kat - Awww, I so want to go on a holiday with my bestie, who lives too far away.
It looked like a truly awesome trip.
Happiness everywhere in those pics and that tart looks goooood! 🙂

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - Oh, you guys look so happy! makes me miss my best friend Chicago Jen (who has just relocated to DC). I need to go write her a letter. And go on vacation. And eat a raspberry tart thingy. And hang a tire swing!
