world water day

so it's here.
today is World Water Day.

most of us reading this….we take our water for granted.
we can turn on the tap anytime we want.
we can use a drinking fountain just about anywhere.
we can bathe whenever we feel like it…in CLEAN water.
we can jump in a gigantic swimming pool or soak in a hot tub to relax.
we give our dogs big bowls of clean water…we make sure they are never out.

we don't have to worry about our babies getting sick or dying from the water we have to serve them.

we don't have to walk for hours EVERY DAY to get dirty water in buckets for our family.

we can help those that do have to do that.

Rwanda_clean_well

and we HAVE.

we have built many wells through water4christmas and charitywater.org from your donations.

today we are rasing money to support the well mechanics that are desperately needed to keep the wells working.

Water4

for World Water Day, The Adventure Project is setting a goal to enable 186 people to become well mechanics.
if successful they could serve 930,000 people with CLEAN WATER.

Water1

it is a briliant plan.
to teach….to be effective….to bring solutions to a problem.
we can help.

freetown

we stayed in freetown during our visit to sierra leone.
it was bigger than i thought it would be.
it was busy night and day.
we arrived at night & we each asked things like "why are there so many people out in the dark?!"

and then in the morning….there were lots and lots more people….everywhere!
the noise was something that is a definite adjustment.
kansas is pretty quiet most of the time.

IMG_4233
the group of people in the middle are selling goods…on the ground.
i can see white sheets or linens behind the car and suitcases.
there is a baby stroller holding a cooler for water? i am guessing.

IMG_3613
this photo above was taken out our hallway window at the YMCA.
the building is a rehab center.
and people also live in this metal covered structure.

IMG_4152
these are homes in Kroo Bay which is at the bottom of a hill…the lowest point.
i would guess that the bags at the top that are stacked and stacked…are trash.
IMG_4157
this is looking back into kroo bay.

IMG_3343
this a street in freetown.
barbed wire is around everything.
if not barbed wire then there would be a wall with broken bottles cemented into the top of the wall
to keep people out.

IMG_3653
these are almost all taxis lined up.

IMG_4230
homes.
i think they use their roofs to have some extra space…to dry things in the sun that get wet…
i also see buckets in this picture.
with no running water they fill the buckets at a pump and use it back in their home for everything.
we saw so many children getting water.
my own kids probably wouldn't even bring me a drink if i asked them i bet.
and these children would be carrying big buckets a long way back to their home.

IMG_4237
these are shops in the street.
they are everywhere.
shops and tables of food and "stuff" EVERYWHERE.

IMG_4229
these are homes.
and a shop in the front.
on the table to the right in a big tray with small plastic bags w=filled with sugar.
i didn't ask what was in the big bowls.

IMG_4227
a clothing shop?
someone asked specifically about this.
it's just a man selling clothes on the street.

IMG_4239
this looks like trash to me on her roof but i see a ladder
so maybe i just don't recognize the value of what she is saving on her roof.
we are a pretty disposable nation here in america.
rarely see the need to save something…we just throw it away.

IMG_3655
this photo just makes you stop.
what an amazing skill she has.
so many of the people here have this ability.
but she is carrying so much!
wow.

IMG_4210
a fruit stand with fruit i don't even know what they are!
they don't sell it at wal-mart.
the pink disposable bags are full of coal i think…for them to cook at home with.

IMG_4228
the yellow building is probably a "nice" apartment.
that does not mean running water.
or flushing toilets.
and i will guess again that the big bags are…..rice?
total guess.
the backpack on the roof??  no clue.
it's a
mystery.

IMG_4156
this is the good part of the river.
the worse part i did not get a photo of.
but it was the most unbelievable site i have ever witnessed.
more trash than water…big pigs snorting around in it…children playing…using the bathroom…

it was the most shocking site of the entire trip.
this photo is true.
we stood in the same spot but i didn't take a picture.

IMG_3443
this is our group walking (standing out like crazy).
look at the man in the middle…8 baskets of coal on his head.
EIGHT!!

IMG_3867
the rocks on the roof?
to hold it down…i assume.
these are questions i wish i would have asked.
there were so many questions.
and the paint cans?  well…i saw people selling them…and then i saw children sitting on them as toilets.
but i cannot say that it for sure what they are meant to be used for.
________________________________________________________________________________________
humble homes built with what they have or find…
children…babies…sitting in the dirt…
strong people able to balance their livelihood on their heads…
and their babies on their backs.
more trash than there is space for…
pigs, goats, chickens, dogs and cats wandering where they please…
music and noise 24 hours a day…
bright colorful fruit that was hard to resist as you walked by…
sweating more than i ever have but no one notices because everyone else is just as hot…
people everywhere…walking and in cars or motorcycles or selling on the street…

being asked "ow di bodi?"  (how is your body?) many times everday.
"mi bodi fine" is the proper response (unless you are sick)

just some thoughts i had while uploading these.

still learning

raise your hand if you feel you are a slave to your hormones?
raise your hand if you would (want to) punch anyone who accused you of it?

i do.
i do.
me.
yes.

my saturday night consisted of a listening to a screaming 2 year old for 30 minutes from 2:15 – 2:45 AM.
then when all was quiet…i could not fall asleep again.
i got up and watched HGTV shows that were recorded till 3:30.
went back to bed.
still couldn’t sleep.
is that restless leg syndrome real? i think i have it.
got up and ate 2 bowls of cereal.
read 2 magazines and then 1 Corinthians.
i finally fell back to sleep.

then at church…annie decided for the first time ever to not go in the nursery.
more screaming.
craig was counting offering so i had to stay at church sitting in the hall with a naughty baby.

i was so mad….at everything.
mad that i was tired.
mad at annie.
mad at craig for being so smiley (and cute).
mad at myself for being so mad.

we went home and craig sweetly made me some lunch.
i ate it without saying thank you and walked up to my bed.
2 hours later i woke up to more screaming.
i was so mad that i went outside and cleaned up the yard.
then craig decided to go play golf…why?
was he feeling mad himself?
it couldn’t be my fault? (ha)

Photo_941

morgan did i do that right?
“whatever”

bottom line…i needed a break and i hadn’t taken one…the right way.
a break needs to be gone not just upstairs.
i haven’t been alone for a long time.
i remembered my post about going crazy, needing a break, being proactive, scheduling time for myself.
i looked it up.
it was exactly 2 months ago to the day .
june 5.
it made me smile.
“it was the hormoneees” (big fat greek wedding)
i know it’s hormones but it’s not like that helps how i feel.
i have got to have a break on the calendar.
so that it doesn’t get this bad.
i have to take it because no one is going to do it for me.
they just want to get away from me…but not have me leave..
who would fill the sippy cups and warm up the hot dogs?
i have to get this done.
i said i would and then i didn’t.
because by tomorrow i will feel okay and the urgency won’t be overwhelming me.
so maybe….i will just take the 5th of each month off.

after the kids were in bed we just vegged out.
tommy boy was on HBO.
how can you be mad watching that?
“BEES…they’re huge and they’re sting crazy!”
it cheered me up.

i stayed up late enough to ensure a full nights sleep.
and i am so grateful that annie slept all night too.

and not to be misunderstood…
i am grateful.
i am grateful for a loving husband who tiptoes around me when i get like this…to keep the peace.
grateful for forgiveness after i act this way.
for being understood by so many other mamas.
i am grateful for kids who play well together 97% off the time.
grateful for their loud voices and laughter and energy and healthy bodies
for a soft bed that i can crawl into on a sunday afternoon
for another day and another chance to try to do things the right way.
