pancakes

when i walked in the kitchen this morning
these two were busy.
within 3 minutes of being awake i had my camera in my hand.
(i put it down for a moment so i could make some coffee.)

annie was in the best mood.
she was talking a mile-a-minute and so happy to be with daddy.
i could tell you she has bed-head…
but this what her hair looks like all the time.

"i want to crack the egg!"

Img_9317_2

"i got egg on my hand!"

Img_9318_2

"i want to pour the oil!"

sneaky.

Img_9324_2

"mmmmm….sugar."
(annie calls it 'souuu-dawh')

Img_9326_2

"i want to turn it on!"
can you tell she is three?
she is becoming so very independent.

do you make your pancakes in a blender?
this is the way craig has always made them…
probably because his mom did it that way.
i am pretty sure we always did bisquick growing up??
am i wrong mom?
there's nothing wrong with bisquick. i use it when craig isn't here.
maybe i should post his recipe….

this routine of pancakes with dad is special.
it's a 13 year tradition….going strong.
all the kids like to help (or did at one time)
and of course they like to eat them.
now that we add blueberries i love to eat them too.

it makes a mess but the memories are worth it.

first post of the year!

we enjoyed january 1, 2010 by sharing a candle lit dinner with our kids.
Candles
we even ate in the actual dining room.
with the christmas plates and glasses.
sean set the table with a tablecloth and got to light the candles…by himself!
(that is pretty exciting stuff if you are 9)

Card
talby made place cards and made the seating arrangement.
everyone was in charge of making one dish each…whatever they wanted.
(craig and i helped them)

Sean
the good kind.
velveeta brand…nothing but the best for a fancy dinner.

Scott
we made these on new years eve so made another batch last night too.
ALL fancy dinners have hot wings. (pioneer woman recipe)

Potatoes
since she was in charge there was no cheese on top…because she doesn't like melted cheese.
she likes cheese…but not when it melts…except on pizza…that melted cheese is ok.

Me
i had to push the fruit.
our kids would eat starch and sugar 24 -7
 if we let them.
(and so would i)

IMG_0772
everyone was cooking at once.
annie chose PANCAKES as her dish.
craig helped her make 6 chocolate chip pancakes….mmmm.

Milk
the kind from the store…in the milk section.
TREAT!

Frog
Cheers
fancy dinners also have napkins bibs…and tiaras.

Eat
and you know what?
there were no spills.
no fights.
no mean words.
and no crying.

it was a LOVELY meal.
i am sure this is a tradition we keep.

(ps: lauren wanted NOTHING to do with us.  she took a plate of food & ate alone in her room by choice)

in the kitchen

do you love it or hate it when there are lots of people in your kitchen?

i love it.

especially when everyone is cooking alongside me.

we invited jess, her mom kathy and her sister ann over for dinner after the craft fair
to get to know heather, sarah and julie a bit better.

it was an all girls' night!
craig had taken the boys to a football game so the house was full of girls.
lauren took all of these pictures.

IMG_2539

we made chicken enchiladas…using the laptop as a cookbook…how very 2009.
IMG_2579

sarah was appointed queen of the cream puff squares.
IMG_2595

IMG_2601

IMG_2707
together we made a YUM-O dinner.  mmmmmmm!
and dessert.

IMG_2714
fyi….we did not use syrup for our enchiladas.
while we were cooking annie heated up some left over pancakes and ate that…and had some juice.
and we're fancy…no placemats…paper napkins….the cleaning chore chart still on the chalkboard!
i can't get it all done…thank goodness.  now you know for sure that i am normal…i think.

IMG_2723
waffle is always in the middle of a party.

kathy brought some Cora dresses for the etsy girls…they each have little girls at home.

IMG_2640
don't you want every one of them?!
i know there are 100's of people waiting for their shop to reopen….patience ladies….patience.

IMG_2639

IMG_2673

IMG_2662
even annie got to choose one….she loved that.

IMG_2652
hope.
promise.
healing.
all in one picture.

it was so nice for all of us to get time to talk in real life….not just email.
that was one room FULL of creativity!
we discussed sewing machines and homes and fabrics and blogs and all kinds of goodness…even martha!

the whole weekend was a bittersweet blessing.
God had it all planned out.
He knew from the beginning how big these women's hearts are.
how much love there is to give.
there is nothing we can say to make jess feel better or her arms not feel so empty.
but we can support her and show her His love the way Christ calls us to do.

i read this translation of Philippians 4:13 from Kenneth Wuest in our bible study…
"i am strong for all things in the One who constantly infuses strength in me."
i liked the idea of Christ infusing us with strength.
constantly.

FOUR

IMG_8867

the birthday girl.
it was a very big day for miss annie.
daddy made her birthday pancakes in his suit and tie. (i loved that craig.)

IMG_8788
IMG_8784

she brought donuts to preschool…they matched her outfit.

IMG_8792
IMG_8805

we took two of her friends from school to sonic for lunch and we ate it at the park.  it was adorable.

IMG_8798

she helped me frost her cake and decided on the sprinkles and decorations.

IMG_8831

she got dressed up in her special birthday outfit before daddy came home.
i made her take pictures. (of course i did!)
but it was HER idea to walk around the entire block with a dozen balloons.
how nice to see so many smiling faces in the 5:00 traffic.

IMG_8887

we ordered pizza (and cheese bread sticks for annie) and drank sprite.
annie opened her presents…
hannah montana microphone, playdoh ice cream set, red mary janes, a book, a webkinz and jewelry.
we sang happy birthday and ate cake with ice cream.
i told her about the day she was born and how we looked at her and said "she looks like an ANNIE"

then like most four year olds do after a long day of attention and sugar…she had a tantrum.
daddy tucked her in for a much needed rest.
happy birthday big girl.

saturday morning tradition (with the recipe)

i know i have talked about this before but…

IMG_8332

for 13 years pancakes from scratch have been craig’s specialty.

IMG_4371

his helpers have changed over the years.

IMG_4376

annie can’t wait to get started and she calls them pam-Takes.

IMG_4380

they fight every week over who gets to turn the blender on and off.
one turns it on and one gets to turn it off.

IMG_4382

they alternate pouring the ingredients.
(crystal…notice my jars…i’m loving the flour and sugar in here!)

IMG_4383

IMG_4389

occasionally they do a pancake dance….

IMG_4393

almost done…the blender is full now.

IMG_4398

the best part.
pouring it out…trying their best to make shapes that are legible.
then adding the chocolate chips or blueberries on top before you flip them.

IMG_4403

this red spatula was the only christmas gift i gave craig this year.
it was the perfect gift for him.
you can get one here.

IMG_4412

i am usually asleep for all this fun daddy/kid stuff.
then a child comes up to my bed and says
“mommy your pancakes are done.”
the sweetest words….

there is more to life than bisquick.
no pressure bisquick mommies….
but they are really really good.

craig you are the king of pancakes.
i should make you a crown.

recipe is in the sidebar.
happy breakfast.
or dinner?

dad……part 1

what a nice day.

church…good sermon.
meatballs and mashed potatoes.
swimming…all of us.
golf on tv (craig not me)
painting.
movie on tv.
some gardening.

it was a good father's day…wasn't it craig?
i will assume you agree.

and now let me just say a few things about why i am married to a super dad.

he can install a garbage disposal…
and fixes everything he can around the house.

IMG_5930

IMG_5032
he has a killer lawn.

IMG_8431
he likes to coach the kids…most of the time.

IMG_9318

and then there are those yummy pancakes he makes.

IMG_3996
IMG_4173
IMG_8247
IMG_6276

he plays.
he's there.

IMG_2332

i love him with all my heart.
my kids have no idea how blessed they are to have him.
it's an honor to be his wife.
i am one happy mama.

enough mushy stuff.
he hates it.

IHOP

Img_0301_2

Img_0303_2

my mom and i treated the kids to IHOP.
i really love to go out for breakfast and we never do it.
i used to go with my girlfriends in chicago all the time.
oh how i miss those breakfasts!
but this post is not about that.
it IS about funny face pancakes…with yogurt hair.
and hot chocolate with whipped cream.

Img_0300_2

talby pulled on my arm and whispered in my ear
“thank you for taking me here. this is my favorite breakfast ever”
she absolutely loved getting to play with her food.

Img_0305_2

scott was happy too.
he got to order off the grown up menu.

Img_0306_2

lauren had just said something snotty…
imagine that.

Img_0307_2

sean ordered a cheeseburger and fries.
when i told craig that he said “of course he did!”
sean is always proud to be himself.

and i ordered the plain old boring regular french toast.
and i ate every bite.
