playdoh cookies

i found these at little momma and company.

she has such creative fun in her kitchen.
i was in love with the color…of course.

IMG_4057

i doubled the recipe since there were four of them.
and i think if i ever do it again…i will make some for me to play with too.
ours looked nothing like little momma’s but that’s not important.
(hers were pretty.  ours were not.)
this was just for fun.
and so we could check something else off the summer list.

IMG_4064

it is real cookie dough that looks like playdoh.
it was good enough to eat.
and they did.

IMG_4063

IMG_4076

they each got their own pan.
there was no wrong way to make them.
if we make these again i will add more flour…it was quite sticky.

IMG_4069

IMG_4074

mmmmmmm???
annie was the only one who wanted to eat annie’s.

IMG_4068

IMG_4089

they turned out pretty good.
kind of flavorless…but so colorful.
it was a little strange to eat a bright blue cookie.

IMG_4092
but they managed to get it done.

and for those of you who will comment that i am “such a fun mom…”
they were all grounded from tv and video games yesterday
and this was to keep my sanity.
and 20 minutes after this….
they all got sent tho their rooms till their dad got home from work.

but i am still a fun mom.
just want you to know (in case you doubted) that we have plenty of UN-fun here too.

let’s have a baby shower!

I know I still need to write the q & a about foster care.
I have started to write it several times but I get overwhelmed!
But I will definitely get to it!

Today I have something super special that I already know you’ll want to be a part of.
Mr. Tiny is transitioning to go home with his Mama in the next few weeks!
She has worked so hard to get to this day and I am so proud of her!
She loves him beautifully.
Foster care is new to me and it has been a roller coaster of emotions all along the way but right now I am filled with hope for his future and hers!

Let me tell you how rad this kid is:
1. He is happy ALL THE TIME!
2. He loves life from sun up to sun down.
3. He smiles at everyone he meets.
4. He rarely cries and he sleeps all night.

He has been the biggest JOY for our entire family.

I know that so many of you are in love with him just from his pictures!
I thought one way to show love and support for his mom, for Tiny and for me as his foster mom would be to throw her a baby shower!
Soooo…. you are invited to a virtual baby shower!
All of the gifts with none of the cheesy baby games.  😉

I made an Amazon “registry” for all kinds of things that would be a blessing to Tiny and his mom.
It’s got big items like a crib all the way down to little bitty baby socks.
There are clothes for the coming summer & winter, books and toys.
And even the very practical items like formula and diapers.

I want Tiny’s mama to know that she has support and that she is loved.
Let’s bless her socks off!

CLICK HERE FOR TINY’S BABY SHOWER REGISTRY

********YOU GUYS BOUGHT EVERYTHING!!!*********

If you see something on the list that you’d like to give you click Add to Cart and purchase it.
It will be shipped to me.  I will not see your credit card information.
I don’t even know if I see who did the purchasing.

My family will make sure everything is given to Tiny’s mama.

Thanks for being a part of my life through this blog!
I hope you feel inspired to help others today.
Giving generously is the best feeling!!!
This verse was the focus of the sermon at my church on sunday and I’m gonna leave it here for you too.

I want to be that kind of giver… “always ready to share with others”.

so many projects!

life is moving along over here.
we have so many projects happening at once that i have shouted “we cannot do one more thing until we finish this list!” and then had to tell myself the same thing in my head 10 times a day.
i see all the weeds in the flower beds – “nope.  look away! they will be there next week/month!”
i see the junk drawers in the laundry room – “SHUT IT.  that mess will wait.  It is not on the list”
i walk by the fabric i bought for curtains back in december – “NOOOO! stick to the list!”
sheesh.
so i must push through… and not deviate from the crazy long list.
and i cannot wait to be done!

this rug!
i love it so much!
although… do not leave it out in a huge week long rain storm… it will fade a lot.
boo.

my mom found me this super great vintage floral rocking chair and it is IN the living room now.  🙂
it’s my new favorite thing.
behind it you can see the box where the baby chicks were living for a few weeks.

they are out in the coop now – too stinky to keep inside for long.
we got 3 barred rock and one buff orphington.
we’ll see if they are all girls… fingers crossed!
we aren’t allowed to have roosters according to the city rules.
and also roosters are loud!  no thank you.

over the last few months we have been to SO MANY volleyball tournaments.
sometimes siblings come, sometimes other family, sometimes it’s just me or just craig.
we were in Kansas City for a three day tournament last weekend.
i have never seen anything like that – 70 something courts??? CRAZY!

between games we got to do a little antique shopping in the West Bottoms in KC.
it was faaaaabulous.
this is me trying to get craig to appreciate this cabinet and want to buy it for me.
he didn’t bite.    #sadface

it was a really great place to find junky treasures.
i could’ve shopped five times as long as i got to… no one else was as excited as me about the antiques.
can you believe i didn’t buy that rainbow afgan?  or the jesus paint-by-number?? I have a collection of jesus pictures!? what is wrong with me?  it’s amazing!

i’m jealous that sean can do that eyebrow thing!

annie is such a great baker!
she made this cake just because she wanted to – and it was soooooo good!

waffle finally got a much needed haircut.
He loooooves not having all that hair – runs around all happy and funny after the haircut.
and i am happy to not have hairballs floating all around the house.

our first sunset of 2017 out in the firepit.
so happy to have so many more this summer!

i got some new rugs – i ordered from home depot because they have free shipping and you can return anything to the store.
this one was a total win!

one of the projects we are working on… (craig i mean) was putting in new flooring in the basement!
it was all carpet down here before.
and now it’s this awesomeness!
time to bring on the fun details like pillows, art work,  furniture etc!
we watch movies down there with the projector – like a movie theater – kinda.
way to go mr. duerksen!

i found this table & 6 chairs on craigslist for $200.
it looks exactly like our current craigslist table but it has two big leaves to seat lots more people.

i sanded, primed with KILZ2, painted with Behr Premium Plus Ultra Pure White and sealed it with Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish.
three of the chairs weren’t worth saving but three of them were.  🙂
but we already had six from the first CL table purchase.

and now we can have more than just our family at the table!
finally!

you can see the pics from the first CL table -click here…. there was also a hutch and two buffets in the deal!
and to see what we did with them – click here!
the house looks a lot different now but that shows the first steps.  🙂
craigslist is the BEST!

5 days in colorado

car
we left early in the morning which was not fun for anyone but about 20 minutes into the trip everyone had settled in and our car was silent and looked empty for the first few hours.  i can’t say that i don’t love that!
i get to talk with mr. duerksen!
and i got to finish Falling Free.
heart eyes! heart eyes! heart eyes!
(go preorder this book people!!! it’s sooooo good!)
IMG_0037mirror
there were plenty of gas station stops and snacks and mcdonalds bathroom selfies.
IMG_0137
they eventually began to wake up and talk or play games or… braid hair.
IMG_0141
IMG_0635
30 minutes after we arrived at our rental house we were already hiking around.
we stayed close to Breckinridge so everywhere we hiked or explored was in that area.
i didn’t pay attention to which trails were which… sorry if you wanted to know.
basically ALL the trails are great.
it’s Colorado!
IMG_0631
IMG_0206IMG_0181IMG_0164
that’s a mama goat and her baby behind them… the mama looks headless but it wasn’t.
ha ha ha

IMG_0214IMG_0175IMG_0179IMG_0215IMG_0204IMG_0169IMG_0216
pretty nice place for morning coffee (and cereal).

IMG_0227
more hiking….
IMG_0229IMG_0231IMG_0343IMG_0235IMG_0249IMG_0236IMG_0239IMG_0247IMG_0258IMG_0257
i wiped out hard crossing this spot.
this was off the trail and i told craig it was fine and i could do it like the kids were… and i DID but first i had to get really dirty and break some nails and bleed a little.  HA!

IMG_0272IMG_0275
teenagers are fun.
i used to roll my eyes when i heard that phrase but i have found out it that it’s actually true!
of course not ALL the time but for a lot of the time it’s fun to have people around that can have regular conversations and are enjoyable company!
and that can feed themselves and don’t need you for things nearly as much as they used to.

IMG_0276
and they make me laugh so much.
IMG_0279
their goal was to get high enough to touch snow in july.
and they did it!
IMG_0292
goat selfie!!
IMG_0237IMG_0315
my 6 favorite people in the whole world.
and all my people with me!

IMG_0338IMG_0327hats
breckinridge is completely touristy and i’m ok with that!
i didn’t go into any shops that i would have chosen but it was nice to just walk around before or after dinner.
IMG_0333IMG_0339IMG_0323
the sock store was everyone’s highlight.
who would’ve guessed that an entire store of JUST socks was a good idea?
but it is!
ANY kind of sock you can imagine was in that shop!
IMG_0363
another day we rented jeeps to go off-roading.
we wanted ATVs but i can’t recall why it didn’t work out… numbers or drivers or not available?
but we ended up with two jeeps.
and for some reason i was completely terrified.
i think i thought i would crash?  or get stuck?  or fall off a cliff?
so after awhile i let scotty drive and i was so much happier in the passenger seat – crazy right?
but he was SO HAPPY to be in charge and get to play.
we had a blast in our jeep!
IMG_0345IMG_0365IMG_0379
we stopped to eat lunch waaaaaay up in the middle of nowhere.
BEAUTIFUL!
IMG_0376IMG_0383
craig only had to help us get unstuck one time.
in our defense… our 4 WD low wasn’t working and that contributed to our issue… which makes no sense because you can’t see the very steep hill just to the right out of frame in this picture.
we couldn’t make it up and went backwards to try again but got stuck.
IMG_0387
Sean gave it a shot as well on the regular roads… not the mountain stuff.
then i got back in the drivers seat once i was more calm and comfortable.
and i fell in love with it!
i think i need a white Rubicon Jeep now.   🙂

IMG_0462IMG_0389
IMG_0399IMG_0472IMG_0392
we climbed down and played in the water after all our driving around.

IMG_0390IMG_0405IMG_0404IMG_0403IMG_0418IMG_0427IMG_0432IMG_0430IMG_0447
on the night i got to choose dinner… i was the only one who was pleased with their meal.
oops.
sorry picky eaters! my meal was DELICIOUS!
FullSizeRender 8IMG_0460
our oldest daughter was on this trip with us this year.
it’s been a few years since she has joined us.
🙂
it’s weird when you’re kids become grown ups…

IMG_0456
i got creeped on in my selfie.
i was loving the green wall… but scott didn’t care.

IMG_0470
do you play Dutch Blitz?
it’s a favorite over here.
we have two sets so more people can play at once.
also we played spades and scum and trivial pursuit during our stay.
and watched Everest because it was on.
🙂

IMG_0581
our fourth day Craig woke these three hikers up early on and they climbed Mt. Quandry!
i think i may have died if i’d tried it…
but they did GREAT!
they “complained” the rest of the trip about their sore muscles but i know they were proud that they accomplished it.

i sat and read a book the whole time they were gone.
i was equally proud of that.

IMG_0588IMG_0595
more of pretty breckinridge.
IMG_0612IMG_0622IMG_0623IMG_0624IMG_0636
on our last night we went into denver and went to the Avett Brothers concert at Red Rocks!!!
we offered it to all our kids but we didn’t have a lot of takers.
weirdos!
so we got tickets off craigslist the day of and went!
craig and i had always wanted to go to Red Rocks.
bucket list – check!
the big kids went to movie and got an uber back to the hotel.
see?  big kids are awesome!  they can get their own Ubers!
IMG_0647IMG_0648IMG_0651IMG_0655
it was something i will always remember!
IMG_0659IMG_0657
annie even laid down for a little rest towards the end.
🙂

IMG_0673
colorado is so good.
we love spending time there… i am so glad we got to be there again this summer.

now here’s the deal… i love photos and i love vacations.
i love to keep memories but be sure to know that pictures don’t always tell the whole story.
blogging and social media makes most everything everyone’s doing look perfect or very close.
and of course we all know that no one has a perfect life!
no one.
did we have an awesome time in colorado – YES!
but….
with 5 big kids we also had some big struggles because there are lots of personalities & lots of opinions.
BUT even with those struggles… even if there were some knock-down-drag-out fights… even if i cried…
i still love to be with my people.
it’s WORTH IT to make the plans, take the time off work and GO – even if it’s not all sunshine and rainbows.
i want my kids to know that i WANT to be with them.
I want them to know i enjoy spending time with them.
i want them to know that we can get through the fighting and the feelings and frustrations.
to know that there’s nothing they can do to be unloved, uninvited or less special.
i want them to see different places and get out of our town.
i want them to appreciate nature!
it doesn’t have to be expensive or fancy.
intentional family time together is so important to me and i hope they will remember it forever.
i pray they remember more good than the bad.
because there truly is SO MUCH MORE good.
thanks colorado for more memories!!!
your mountains are my fave!
