twelve

talbythis is talby at her 3rd birthday. Β we even got the huge Dora helium balloon.
annie was 9 days old for this party and we moved to Kansas the week after her birthday.

IMG_0363
talby requested the yummy cake from sam’s club.
i was super happy to do that. (saves time on busy birthdays) Β i picked up the star picks at target.
but i added the glitter.
and i glittered the candles too… which you can tell when it’s close up but not enough to matter.
martha would care.
i do not… i just wanted some glitter for the GOLDEN day.

fyi…a golden birthday is when you birth date matches your age…it’s a made up thing… just makes it fun when it happens.
so she turned twelve on the twelfth.
and then sean turns 14 on the 14th next year (in 2014!!)
we missed everyone else’s in our family.

for talby’s Golden Birthday i thought it would be fun to get her a “Golden Gift”.
basically i just wandered through stores and picked out anything i could find that was GOLD.
IMG_1243IMG_1249
gold chocolate coins … gloves … a necklace & earrings … party decorations … thank you cards …
gold pencils … gold sharpie … gold pens & stickers from the $1 Spot at target … gold nail polish …
gold polka dot shirt … sparkley sunglasses … glitter spray for your hair …. a gold pouch
all in a gold gift box covered in glitter!!!
IMG_1248IMG_1252IMG_1265
oh my goodness it was so fun to put together!

the other gifts she got from us or other people in her life included Taylor Swift perfume, clothes, Keds (like taylor Swift wears) diary of a wimpy kid book, two other books and some money. Β (someone asked me to post that) sean and annie each made talby a comic – hilarious as always.

just before bedtime and before lauren went back to school and just before the KU game started we attempted a selfie shot in the nearly dark living room.
man…. i sure wish it had been good quality.
this was a great shot.
if only we had had some light. oh well. Β we got this. it’s better than nothing.
even spanky made it in the picture.

Jenn - Love it! Especially all the gold gifts! Great idea.

meg duerksen - ummmm…. that is an old copy of Fix it and Forget It. a crockpot cookbook πŸ™‚

Tiffany - It’s so good to see your family all together! Happy special birthday to Talby!

meredith - I love how you ran with the golden birthday! The things you (both) picked out are awesome! So much fun! Happy birthday to Talby! Love the photo comparison too. More of those would be cool. πŸ™‚

Jennie - Those are the days… Can you believe it that time has past so quickly?

Soon she will be going to college…

Birthdays are a bittersweet moment. We’re glad and we’re sad. A little bit.

God bless your family.

Jennie

On a side note-
I can’t believe Dora the explorer is actually that old!

Flower Patch Farmgirl - Calvin is nosing his way through your post. “That’s cool!” “Who is that?” “Are those chocolate coins??!”

πŸ™‚

I love your family photo and I want a slice of that CAAAAAAKE!

Melissa G. - Meg, you are such a fun Mom!!!! πŸ™‚

Angela - My golden birthday (25th) was back in May – I would like a re-do as no one *cough* my husband *cough* thought to put gold glitter on my cake or buy me gold candles. Dangit! Happy birthday, Talby!

Jen - What a great idea…love the gold theme!

Barbara (WA) - What a fabulous idea for a Golden Birthday (which I knew nothing about when raising my boys, darn)!! Pinning it now for grandchildren reference, heh.

Jessica - Is Lauren reading “The Known World”????

Linda - You really are awesome. And have the most wonderful ideas. Golden birthday that is such a fabulous idea!

Lisa - Happy birthday to Talby – she is growing into a beautiful young lady! πŸ™‚

Molly - Oh so fun! Happy Birthday to Miss Talby!! Great picture of the whole fam! I bet she enjoyed having her big sister home. Hope college life is going well for Lauren. My hubs works division I athletics and i know this can be a tough time of year for college kids. πŸ™‚

Suzanne - Thank you for sharing Talby’s Golden Birthday!
Best Wishes for many more, Talby!!!

Tiffany - Oh what a goober, it was her 12th Birthday! Still didn’t know that was Golden, but I like it.

Amanda - Small Home Big Start - What a great idea for a golden birthday!

Tiffany - Oh Momma, u outdid yourself. What a sweet gift. (I didn’t know 13 was a golden year, did u make that up? ). I hope she loves that her Big Sis made it home for her bday, all of it warms my heart this Friday morning. P.S. I have a suggestion for another book she might like, Wreck this Journal. Maybe for Christmas? it would be great for the two girls to do together. I’m pumped to do it with my 6 year old, but I have a few years yet πŸ™‚ Happy Friday!

Laura - “if only we had some light”……..

TRUST ME my friend…that picture shines a light brighter than you know!!!!

I have pictures of Belle and Talby together..they are LITTLE.
Wouldn’t it be fun to get them together NOW??
Big kids, glitter wearing, Taylor Swift loving, making their own cupcakes, pre teen girls……
sigh….

miss you
and love to Talby
she has the same birthday as my dog πŸ™‚

Laura O - Love that gold polka dot shirt! So cute! I wonder if it comes in my size…..haha! Happy birthday Talby!

Heather G - (Ugh, WAS, not is. I hate when I make editing errors in comments!)

Heather G - Happy Birthday, Talby!

Confession: I am 31 and I love all of her gifts! That shirt is so adorable, and when I was growing up I thought spray hair glitter is THE JAM. (it pretty much still is.) You’re such a great mom, Meg! πŸ™‚

angie - happy 12th birthday to talby… i hope her day was super! the golden gift is so thoughtful… and her at 3 with her dora cake… so sweet! my oldest turns 12 in January… i can’t even believe it…

i can’t think of a title.

this sky last week.
it was SO unreal… looked like a painting.
IMG_0015
those clouds went on and on and on.
for as far you could see… tiny puffy clouds.
i pulled over on a dirt road to take this shot.

IMG_0042
waffle is a big baby.
if i would let him up into my lap he would try it.

IMG_0069
kitten squeezes and loves happen every where.
even on the trampoline.
IMG_0075
finally get some more running in.
like once a week.
but i am making my way back.
scenes like this make it much easier to be out there running. Β πŸ™‚
we scheduled a race again in december (4 miles) just to get out there and not be too tempted to give up.
i am looking forward to it. (and the starbucks afterwards)

IMG_0286
i spent the weekend with these lovely ladies…and twelve more awesome girls too.
we finished out 2013 Craft Weekends.
number twenty. Β i never dreamed it would be this much fun.
so crazy wonderful!!!
we had perfect weather… great projects and super creative women to hang out with.
always such a fabulous time. Β i will write all about it by next week.
and now…
i get 10 weeks off.

i feel very energized by that statement.
there are so many things i have been wanting to do but just haven’t had the energy for.
my mind has been focused on craft weekends and being a mom and wife.
there wasn’t much more room for anything else that took thinking or planning.
but now i am pumped for theΒ stuff i want to make… lists to check off…. projects i want to start.
i feel ready to get crafty…. for ME andΒ not for work. Β projects i want to make that are not test runs for CW.
just M A K E stuff for the fun of it.
artsy people need that ya know?
a time to refresh.
i am sure all kinds of people need that… it just looks different for all of us.

IMG_0318
so we started right away on a project…. the third floor.
that junk that is up there has been bugging me forever!
craig went through it all with me and carried loads down the three flights and out to the curb.
he made my day.
i found his college basketball uniform while sorting… and of course i put it on and kept it on the entire time we cleaned.

and now that third floor is cleared of all junk.
ready for some ideas that i can dream up.
ahhhhhh….. feels so good!!!
what will the third floor become?! Β i think i know!
wait and see.
IMG_0324
talby has a birthday on tuesday… her GOLDEN birthday.
she turns 12 on the 12th. Β Β she turns 12 on 11-12-13.
isn’t that fun?
she is going to have a great day.
i am going to make sure of it. Β πŸ™‚
IMG_0328

she baked and decorated all these Β cupcakes to bring to school.
she is really awesome.
and man is she funny!
she is hilarious.

i am so glad we get to have her in our family.

kerry - Toooo much excitement in one post!

those clouds… those cupcakes… that jenny on the spot!

so so lovely. happy birthday talby darling! xx

Kirsten J - Happy birthday Talby! All day today I kept telling people it was a special day….what a cool date for your golden birthday πŸ™‚

Alicia @ La Famille - Kinda teasing us hardcore with the third floor thing there….

Also its my dad’s birthday today and I thought 11-12-13 was so cool!

Karen Gerstenberger - Happy Birthday to your lovely Talby! I’m so glad you mentioned the golden birthday; it’s our David’s golden birthday this month, too – he’ll be 21 on the 21st. My husband said, “Does anyone even think about that anymore?,” and I said, “Yes!” So glad that you do this, too.

Kat - You should frame that pic of the sky and fields, it is amazing.
The sky looks gorgeous and those colours, sigh.
I hope Talby has a good b’day. I saw on facebook where Waffle ate the cupcakes, oops! πŸ™‚

Sara - You look fabulous Meg! I like your hair longer πŸ™‚ Your third floor space looks dreamy….can’t wait to hear what you have in mind. And-I’m so happy for you that you get a break! I love creating to my heart’s content……it is just so satisfying. Enjoy your much deserved break! πŸ™‚ (I use that term loosely…mama’s and wives are always working) πŸ™‚

Jenn - Those leaves! Ah! What a wouldn’t give to have leaves like that. So beautiful! Looks like all good times. Enjoy your break. Can’t wait to see the third floor, maybe in person.

sara @ it's good to be queen - i love these kinds of posts. sweet and lovely. πŸ™‚

CathyC - Oh my gosh! When my group was there we were all dying to know what you would do with that third floor space! Can’t wait to see what it will be.

Tracy - What a fun date for a birthday!! Happy Birthday, Talby!!

Is that the 3rd floor of the craft house or the farmhouse? I can’t wait to see what you do πŸ™‚

Have a great week!

kim - that first pic might be my most favorite ever! πŸ™‚
i think you should make it a canvas, too!

mindy - Can’t wait to see what you come up with for that 3rd floor space. You are just so creative! Love all your pictures, as always.

Jaime β™₯ Raising up Rubies - the third floor suspense is killing me.

Chris - Happy birthday to your Talby! I agree with Kelly- it’s cool that your kids can take homemade treats. We can only bring prepackaged stuff which is no fun.

I can’t wait to see what you do with the 3rd floor. We checked it out (since you said we could) it has so much potential!!

Marsha Kern - Happy Birthday to Talby! Do you guys still like living in the country? Will you ever move back to town or will it stay the country? Marsha

kelly - So cool that you guys can take home made treats to school.. That is a thing of the past around here…. Her Cupcakes are awesome and so is she…

Samantha - Happy Birthday Talby! I wish we can take homemade cupcakes to school but they have to be store bought to even be allowed on campus πŸ™

Tiffany - I love birthdays and cupcakes, Happy 12th Birthday Talby!!!

Christy - Happy Birthday Talby! I hope it is a good one. The last year of being a preteen!! And Meg, I can’t wait to see what you are going to do with the 3rd floor. A blank slate…so exciting!

Betsy - Hey!! My son turns 12 today too πŸ™‚ A special day indeed!!!

fifteen YEARS.

we had a 15th birthday.

IMG_2235

it is pretty awesome to watch a boy turn into man-size right before your eyes.
the have him still lay his head on your shoulder waiting for his dinner from the waiter.
and even let you play with his hair.
at a restaurant!

IMG_0052

             IMG_0063

it's always fun to celebrate together.
and i never make cakes except for birthdays so i enjoy that too.
he requested chocolate with chocolate frosting.

IMG_2239

he also wanted to light his own candles.

IMG_2245

after cake craig put on a video of them when they were little….scott's 4th birthday.
it was the highlight of the night.
their little voices…. sean's pacifier… the way the boys couldn't say their L's and C's…
the birth order traits showing up loud and clear even 11 years ago…and little baby talby just beaming in the swing while the chaos goes on all around her.

awesome.

we are so mad that we didn't take more video.

and now that is gone.   G O N E.

SO here is my Public Service Announcement for today …. take video of your kids.

TODAY.

of nothing.

of everything.

of them eating dinner.

playing with their toys.

singing a song.

reading a book.

playing dress up.

taking a bath.

sitting in the yard.

playing soccer.

swinging on a swing.

being tickled.

CRYING.

LAUGHING.

SCREAMING.

because when it's gone  then IT IS GONE.

you WILL NOT remember the voices.
you won't.
i promise.

your little boys with drooly lips, new teeth and chubby cheeks will get deep LOW voices and be taller than you and you will not have the ability to remember the sounds of them squeeling about the new "P-eeece Tars!!!" they got for their birthday (police cars)

i am NOT kidding around here.

take video today and all the time of nothing special.

because it's ALL SPECIAL!!!

it is gone WAY too fast.

now stop crying and get out your video camera.

πŸ™‚

Abigail Gossard - I’m finally catching up on your blog after about a year because of my two boys, one w special needs and a 6 month old, keep me busy! I found myself randomly taping them today and realizing how quickly they’ve changed in 6 months! Thanks for the reminder and for the sweet photos of your family. .

Alison Joy - Yes, crying! Thank you for a beautiful post.

Kasey - Yep, crying. So sad to see them grow up so fast.

Michelle - HOW did you know we would cry? Spooky! I say to my husband at least every other day, “I could listen to Ted’s little voice all day long.” And I do. He’ll be three in July. His little brothers are 5.5 months – yes, twin boys. Life is good … And I LOVE that birthday cake! Happy Birthday Scott! xoxo

Whitney - I don’t even have children and I agree! For Christmas I took all of our family videos and put them on DVD… and I accidentally erased one of my favorite videos of all time πŸ™ Now I wish we had more of that Mother’s Day! Memories are so important!!!

Lora - AAAAAAAA-men!
My baby is 13 and just lacks a smidge being as tall as me. I DON’T like it! He still holds my hand sometimes in public, but probably not for too much longer. Shoot those videos and take lots and lots of pictures!

ArielW - in tears…. you are so right.
and as I sit here and type this crying,
I have one girl in time out
and one boy watching veggietales,
and I know I will miss this.
off to charge the camera battery.

Rachel Reeves - I’m in tears.
I posted a video of Frankie this morning, singing, and I realized how I don’t do it enough.
I totally forget what K sounded like.
Great. I’m in tears again.

mpoggie - This made my heart beat irregularly.
Earlier today, I recorded three different phone-videos of the same bathtime and felt like an idiot. I said to myself, “This is ridiculous. Calm down with the videos, maybe.”
…Nevermind, Self. Keep up the good (obsessive) work.

Kerstie Pederson - πŸ˜‰

Wendy - Amen, sister! Thanks for the reminder!

jen - Perfect post!!!!!

amanda - Needed this reminder – thank you! And I have a young man in my house with a birthday this weekend and I’m going to bring out some videos for the family to see. I’m already looking forward to it πŸ™‚

Sierra - OH my. I just cried a little at work. I did a lot of videos when they were babies, but I haven’t been doing many lately. I definitely need to. I would hate to forget the way my 5 year old talks right now. Thanks for this public service announcement! πŸ™‚

Heather - Oh Meg! I love you and your blog!

Trish - um… this totally made me cry.

Beth - I’m getting my video camera out when I get home. You’ve just scared me straight!

beth larson - AMEN SISTER!!!!! I could not agree more! We did video tape quite a bit when the kids were little…but now we’ve quit! What’s that all about? I have to add one other thing —print photos!
print favorites every few months- just having them stored digitally will never be satisfying in the future because the mode of storing them changes every decade or so and you kind of loose the means to print or see them easily.
In 25 years you’ll be so excited and thankful for albums full of family photos- and your kids will thank you too!!!
(the photo of the birthday boy in black and white- directly behind his cake is a-mazing!!!!!)
xo

denise@victory rd. - my son turned 15 {gulp} 2 weeks ago. crazy… where did the time go?
like yours he is still loveable. best thing about him.
my three always ask to watch videos from when they were young on their b-days. i think they like to see my ugly-cry-face.

Tonya - My oldest just graduated from college. how did you know i was crying! i cry over every little thing. I DID VIDEO TAPE AND SOOOO VERY HAPPY I DID.

tonya - happy birthday to your boy! and thanks for the reminder to capture these fleeting moments!

Routhie - Awesome photos of him blowing out the candles! I am so glad we took videos of our girls. It’s funny to look back and hear them. My oldest still had a British accent when she was 4 (gone now…sniff sniff) and we all roar laughing listening to the weird things she said.

Eryn - I’m bookmarking this post in the hopes that one day, evntually when I have my own kids, I will always be able to remember these words. Thank you Meg! πŸ™‚

Kristine - Crying….so. Much…..my 13 year old changed his voicemail message and it broke my heart…he had a little voice and now…so deep…
Digging out the video…thanks for the reminder…and the tears…

Gina - Happy Birthday to your man child!!

kathy - Sometimes I find it is almost too much to watch the videos. I have to be in the right frame of mind or all I do is cry. So much emotion tied into it all! Love your pictures~ it is crazy to watch our babies transform right in front of our eyes.

christy - You know your audience too well. I was totally crying until I read that last bit & started to laugh. I was just thinking yesterday that I have a video cam & never use it. I will now.

Maria M - We spent last Christmas break pouring over old VHS-c tapes of the boys…so funny. Those little voices crack us up.

Tiffany - What a great public service announcement. My camera fund is almost there! You are making me want to find more ways to make a little extra money so I can finally make the plunge and get the Mark 3. Videos on my phone will have to do for now. Today Olivia was rolling down a hill and requested I take a video of her, so I did. She was wearing my old first communion dress from when I was 7, princess crown and jewels.
PS- You take the BEST birthday cake blowing-out-the-candles pictures, EVER! I have so much to learn!

Vicki Esh - How do you feel about arranged marriages? I have 3 daughters (all beautiful!), and I’m always on the look out for nice young men from Christian families. Let me know if you want to set something up. πŸ™‚

Mia - you caught me… i was crying. and, i will now go video my babes. πŸ™‚

Kirsten J - Oh man, you got me….I’m so totally bummed that I didn’t take more videos. Have plenty of hours of my big boy, but my baby girl? Minutes. Seriously. Only minutes saved.

tracy fisher - i think we had the same happy tear for our kids birthdays! i just blogged about our little girl growing up. πŸ™‚ -tracy

Gale - AMEN. Well said πŸ™‚ Happy Birthday to your cutie!

Tiffany - Very handsome, what a killer smile! The time goes by so fast, too fast!

Georgia - The pictures are awesome!

Wendi Siyajuck - I remember reading a letter from you telling me the news about Scott. I was in my college room :)Your pictures are fantastic!

Andrea - My oldest just became a teenager last week. A teenager. Sigh. Can still remember the day she was born. When they put her in my arms and the sun came through the window and lighted on her. The rush of love and protectiveness was unbelievable.
You are right about the videos. I have quite a few pictures but not many movies. Need to get the kids on that – they are the ones with the video cameras!

kristin - LOL…. you know your readers well. πŸ˜‰

Amanda - Small Home Big Start - The picture of him blowing out the candles is awesome! What a great way to commemorrate his 15th birthday!

jennifer - Totally crying. And sending to my husband!

Katie S - Thank you! I got a new video camera for Christmas because my old one died right after/before(?) my third baby was born. I have not even had a chance to read about it and get it up and working. She is 9 months and crawling and I keep thinking I need to get the “good” camera working. Luckily, in this day we always have an iPhone at arms reach so she has lots of little videos, but I know those little snippets will not be enough for my heart in the future! My nap time project is to get that camera up and working!!!

lauren - You speak the truth! My favorite video is not of the ‘events’…the graduations, or awards ceremonies or Christmas pageants…it’s just of them being goofy doing nothing. Oh to have had an iPhone when they were little!

Kelly - I just shot a little video of us at dinner the other night all because of the antics of my youngest. Antics I know won’t last. πŸ™‚ Thanks for the reminder!

Molly - getting the video camera out when we get home!!!!!
it is hard i try to walk the line between documenting things and living in the moment.

Ana - I’m at work now and crying with your words because I did not take vΓdeos… I now all I can do is to think: Where did all these years go? Was I sleeping or something? Now, I got adults around here and can not remember the sounds they make…You are so right…Thanks for sharing…

Angela A - My father-in-law brought some videos of my husband and his brother playing soccer when they were younger. And I realized at the end of the season that I should have recorded at least ONE soccer game from this season. He even brought those early enough to make me realize this in time but no. Or the piano recitals that my mom couldn’t attend–did not cross my mind. I will just stalk them with it all summer.

Lora - OH, you made me tear up. I haven’t visited blogs in MONTHS and this is what greets me! Thank you! πŸ™‚

Southern Gal - We have the old videos that I need to convert to DVD. The kids love to watch themselves. I feel sorry for our baby who has lots of video when he was little and then I became a bad video mom. I try to catch it now even though he’s 11 and almost to that man stage. Ah. yes, you make me tear up reading all that.

Bethany - My little ones are sleeping right now but I promise to capture them on video when they wake up. Mine are only 4 and 2 but even those years have gone by so quick.

Mel - How it all goes by in the block of an eye. Great pics!

jamie - OH MY GOSH how did you know i was crying??!!!?? so true! it just goes by so very fast!

Kate - Love everything about the post but I can’t get enough of the cake! a simply beautiful!

Lane - Ahh…thank you. I’m out of video tapes and I need to order more! My 2nd son didn’t make his debut on our video camera movies until he was 8 months old…sooooooo SAD!!! I have to take more videos. The few that I’ve taken of my 4 1/2 year old talking about nothing are the favorite things I’ve ever laid my eyes on.

amber - Geez. That was rough! Now I HAVE to go video my 3 year old. On the couch. Eating dry cereal. Watching Woody. Thank you. You are so right.

Meredith - I have six saved voicemails from my from my first son who is now 9. The first one was when he was 3 and they go up in years. We love listening to them. I think I am 3 phones later and still have them. Love to watch and listen to videos and movies.

Sheila - STOP IT. Just stop it now. Waaaaaaah!

Analia - Such a good reminder! I love your outlook on life! and your photos! that cake!

Shari - I am right there with you! I soooooo wish we had had the modern convenience of a cell phone with a video camera back when mine were smaller. I would give ANYTHING to have those sweet little voices again. πŸ™ I have been trying to video little snippets here and there, but it is so much harder when they are teenagers and dodging you at every turn! πŸ˜‰

Jenn - You are so right. Mine are still young, but I think about how I should have videoed more. Love the cake…its perfect!

Tracy - Sobbing! Such a good reminder! My kids are close to yours in age. We have videos from the very young years, but so many years lost!

Terrie G - I’m with Christine!! It’s too late for me, but not to take video of the grandson!
And you are soooo right!
I’ve got him covered with photos…I need to take more video.
I was just thinking of that this morning as I was going through my photos.
I don’t take much video…need to record!
Thanks for the reminder!
And Happy Birthday to your young man!

Christine Ishmael - How’d you know I was crying??

friday.

aren't you loving my incredibly unique and thought provoking post titles this week?!

πŸ™‚

my mind seems a bit blank to come up with anything more.

with craft weekend ending for the year…
and most of my big projects winding down…
i had one more big thing to check off the list.

talby's birthday party.
 IMG_9581-1

she invited a bunch of girls to the little hotel here in town that has a pool and a party room.
it worked out perfectly.
annie brought a friend along to keep her busy (didn't work) and sean was not supposed ot be there
but he was and when i asked talby if she wanted me to send him home with Dad
she said "he can stay. i don't mind"
so he did.
IMG_9612-2

he loved all the attention.
he was the KING of chicken.
πŸ™‚

12 girls and 1 boy is VERY loud.

thankful for all of it.

happy birthday sweet girl.

———————————————————————-

i know there were a lot of ads here this week.
it's just how it goes sometimes.

but the good news….next week i have several giveaways!!!
i am excited for you.

———————————————————————-

after a 10 day laziness break….
i went running this morning.
it was hard!
i am so glad i went though.
i have been so cranky and not sleeping well…

i think i am suffering from pre-menstrual syndrome (you have to say that dolly parton in steel magnolias)

———————————————————————-

Books

i need a new bible study or great book that is biblically grounded.
i was going to Bible Study Fellowship but going to wichita every week just doesn't work with my schedule this year.
so i am studying on my own.
what books or studies do YOU suggest?

spill it!

———————————————————————-

happy friday to you.

ps…i am currently rocking out to Home by Edward Sharp.
(and singing loudly because i am alone)

kristy - I’m in BSF right now. But I have to say that Beth Moore studies have changed my life. My favorites were James, Living Beyond Yourself, Breaking Free, and To Live Is Christ (life of Paul) is also a good one.

Tfab@new.rr.com - Meg, it’s Tara from wisconsin. Can u please tell me where your bracelet is from? The one that I loved with the bible verse on it? I wanted to ask for that for Christmas from John and te kids.

meg - 1,000 Gifts by Ann Voskamp. Beautiful and life changing.

ira lee - i want a birthday party like that!!!! who cares if im 33! lol looks like a blast. grown ups should have parties like that too!

Sallie - Meg – Your blog so makes me smile and I love how you share your family with us! So many good Bible studies have been recommended and I can second a few of them; anything Kelly Minter has been great for our small group. Beth Moore’s studies are always thought provoking. Working through her James study right now. Absolutely love Lysa TerKeurst and her studies. Lysa’s ‘Made to Crave’ study changed my life and health habits! Just finished her ‘Unglued’ study and got to see her in Western KY, last weekend! Our group loves Priscilla Shirer as well, God brought her study ‘Life Interrupted’ to our small group @ just the right time last year! Have in line for this year, 7 by Jen Hatmaker, Stuck & Anything by Jennie Allen and Nehemiah by Kelly Minter. cbd.com and Amazon carry almost all of these DVD studies and books! I always compare to see who has best price! Enjoy and have a blessed Thanksgiving! Looking forward to Craft Weekend’s 2013 hoping to get to ‘meet’ you! :p)

liz - hi meg- pretty faithful reader of your blog, but don’t comment much. sorry:) LOVE your writing & photography!
anyway- i’ve been really wanting to check out this book:
A Woman’s Wisdom: How the Book of Proverbs Speaks to Everything
By Lydia Brownback
it was recommended by Elyse Fitzpatrick. and i’ve really gleaned a lot of wisdom from anything Elyse has written, esp her books Give them Grace and Women Counseling Women.
(i think you might really like Elyse’s books as well!)

Candy - Stuck by Jennie Allen, it is amazing. I have never been so impacted by a bible study. It is life changing. Seriously.

Sue Groff - Our Women’s Bible study just finished Beth Moore’s “James”. WONDERFUL!!!

lisa - She is beautiful. Happy Birthday to your sweet girl!

amy - Beth Moore’s James is great, I have the disk to the study if you would like to have them. {Love her}
I am almost finished reading Unglued by Lysa TerKeurst, & really like it.
My next one is going to Make Over by Jen Hatmaker, I hear it is really good.
Can’t wait to hear which one you decide to do.
Amy

Linda - Priscilla Shirer is awesome. Our Bible study group did that earlier this year. HIGHLY recommended.

Linda - Just finished Breaking Free by Beth Moore, unbelievable!

Ashley - I agree. It’s what I’m reading right now, too.

Kate - It’s not a Bible Study – but I am ready Cold Tangerines and I am in love. so, so good.

Christina - Love about Sean…such a sweet picture of part of their relationship. πŸ™‚
I have started a book twice, and am now going to finish it…Reordered Love, Reordered Lives. It is good…I just get distracted and
Like right now, I forgot where I was going with that sentence. I’m going to finish the book. From what I’ve read, it’s highly recommended.
Two friends have told me to read When Life and Beliefs Collide by Carolyn Custis James, which I did read many years ago. It seems like Someone is hinting to me…so I will likely be reading that one again, too.
I need to get to running too. I haven’t been in months, so…you should feel pretty good about ten days! ha! πŸ™‚

Tiffany - Great Idea For the PARTY!!!
I’m looking for a NEW Bible Study too.
I am leaning towards Beth Moore.
I always get so much out if hers.
I truly enjoyed “Esther”.
Excited about giveaways next week. : D

Carol S. - Fun party!!! Looks fab. And just my two cents, but NO APOLOGIES for ads and recommendations, you wouldn’t promote something you didn’t like and you are an inspiration to many. I started a blog this year just to keep family up to date on our move to TN…and OMG as much as I would love to post more often, it takes time and work. I keep saying if I could blog my thoughts an pictures while carpooling I’d blog way more often. God bless you and your family Meg.

Amy - Closer Than Your Skin, by Susan D. Hill. You feel like you are getting first-hand insight from someone who knows. Comforting and encouraging and thought provoking. you don’t want to put it down.

Danielle Thompson - RADICAL It is currently changing my life!

Angela - I second “Grace for the Good Girl” by Emily Freeman. I’m also a big fan of anything Lysa Terkeurst or Angela Thomas. And on the plane back home from Craft Weekend I finished “Hope for the Weary Mom”. I’m currently reading “A Confident Heart” by Renee Swope.
Looks like the birthday party was a FUN time!

Kayla - I am in the middle of Discerning the Voice Of God, by Priscilla Shirer right now and loving it! Happy Birthday, Talby….I think it is awesome that big brother helped entertain at the party….lots cheaper than a clown!

Julie - I suggest the Book of Mormon. You won’t find a more powerful Christ-centered book. It changed my life for sure.

Erin - Ah, I love reading that you had been doing BSF! But understand the schedule thing.
One that is always in the recommended reading list at the end of the year is Praying the Attributes of God, by Rosemary Jensen. I really have wanted to get that book for a personal study time each summer. I always get in the summer rut between BSF years. But it has caught my attention several times because it is more geared to an individual study time.
Can’t wait to see what you land on!

Weza - Im currently onto my third Beth Moore study for this year. They are life changing, full of wisdom, bible based and meaty. So so good.
The Esther study is very very good. You can get all the videos online and then do your daily study which takes about 30mins. Trust me you will love it!
PS Im happy to show you live kangaroos here in Aussie (post from a while ago) we have this great little park down the road where wild ones hang out with their babies. Its spectacular.

Jenny B. - I don’t have a book to recommend, but I really enjoy the daily devotional magazine, Journey. You can buy copies at Lifeway stores, or order an individual subscription here: http://www.lifeway.com/Journey-Magazine/c/N-1z140ew

Dori - I’m hosting a women’s small group this semester, and we’re reading Grace for the Good Girl by Emily P Freeman. It is amazing. Emily’s blog is awesome, too! http://www.chattingatthesky.com/the-books/grace-for-the-good-girl

Karen Gerstenberger - I have loved “Believing God” by Beth Moore.

Lisa M. - “Not a Fan”. My husband’s small group just finished it and loved it.

Erica - Out of your list, I’ve only done the “CrazyLove” study… but oh, what a good one.. not just good… life changing… (for me, anyway)

Ashley - That last photo is the best…she looks so genuinely happy. Good stuff friend. Good stuff!

Tanya - I really liked Unglued by Lysa TerKeurst.
I didn’t think I’d be able to relate but I could and it spoke to me.
Good one.

casey - radical!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OR radical together.

casey - yes! we just did the multiply webcast at our church! great!

becky - Looks like she had a ball. I’ve read seven. I’ve started the Donald Miller book. Both were good. Seven was humbling. Convicting. I’m not great at studies. I’ve been working on Beth Moore’s James study. I hate homework. Personally my favorite read is my kid’s Jesus Calling. Simple and speaks right to my heart.

Janna - Anything my Nancy Leigh DeMoss–like “Choosing Gratitude” but she has a lot of great ones. And I just read “The Fruitful Wife” by Hayley DiMarco (sp?) all about the fruits of the spirit–it was awesome!

Tiffany - Looks like a fun time for Miss Talby! Happy Birthday to her!

Sarah H. - I would recommend the Good Morning Girls studies. They are online studies that you can do by yourself or join an online group. I am in a facebook group of girls and we all study and share (or not) what we are learning. There are weekly videos to watch about the study (we just finished the book of Colossians) I loved really getting into the Word. We are getting ready to start a 2 week study preparing for Advent. Check them out! http://www.goodmorninggirls.org

Jenn - Oh that song… I love that song… Home is wherever I’m with you… Love it. Rock on sister.

blu - “anonymous” by Alicia Britt Chole
“…Jesus appears to have walked unstressed and unhurried. His peaceful pace seems to imply that he measured himself not by where he was going and how fast he could get there but by whom he was following and how closely they walked together.” {page 33}
so. good.

katie - have you ever read “The Hiding Place” by Corrie Ten Boom? it is my all-time favorite book. it is an auto-biography, but it is beautifully written in a way that will challenge your faith and stir your heart to be thankful in any circumstance.

julia - I love the LifeChanges series by NavPress. I did Romans last year and it was amazing.

Amy K. - THANK YOU for asking the bible studey question of your many readers!! It is awesome to have so many suggestions in one place.
Also, the pictures of Talby’s party make me feel 11 again – that tired, waterlogged, hungry feeling and how GREAT pizza and cake tastes when you feel that way!

Patty - Kelly Minter’s Nehemiah study was great. I downloaded the video through lifeway (they were only 2.99 each week) and thought it was one of the most transforming studies I have done it quite a while. Both the homework and videos were terrific. I loved reading all the suggestions in the comments and making a list for myself, too.

Alison Vaclav - “Hosting the Presence” by Bill Johnson is awesome.
http://www.amazon.com/Hosting-Presence-Unveiling-Heavens-Agenda/dp/0768441293

April R - Elisabeth Elliot – anything by her πŸ™‚ although ‘Passion and Purity’ is a favorite.
Hell’s Best Kept Secret by Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron.
Totally sweet bday for Miss 11 and how cool to find a way to swim in November! I have a December baby and she’ll be 11 this year, wonder if she’d like a pool party…

Bethany Faucett - Try reading Spiritual Warfare for Women by Leighann McCoy. It has opened my eyes and is amazing!

cassie o - “this momentary marriage” by john piper

alicia @ la famille - right now i’m doing beth moore’s patriarch study by myself and you can download all the videos at lifeway.com/women. you just have to go buy the book. i love her studies. you can do any of her studies that way now…online. you do have to pay for the video download each week. it’s like 5 bucks.
have a fun weekend!!

Lisa - Talby just seems like a really sweet, down-to -earth girl. Happy Bday Talby!

Karen - “Choosing Gratitude” by Nancy Leigh DeMoss – book has a 30 day gratitude challenge/devotional at the end – fairly quick read but well worth doing – very convicting/challenging! and if you’ve never listened to her podcasts “Revive our Hearts” I would recommend them as well – I often listen to that while I’m running – feel like I excercised body & spirit!

Candice - Check out “Sacrilege” by Hugh Halter. It’s not very long, but very thought provoking. Really makes you want to dig in to Jesus, be like him, and love others like he did/does.

Shiloh - Just finished “Not a Fan” by Kyle Idelman and loved it.

Mandy - David Platt and Francis Chan recently wrote a book together called, “Multiply” about disciple-making. I haven’t read it yet, but I heard them speak about it…AWESOME!

Nicole Franks - Beautiful Outlaw! It isn’t a study, but an amazing book about our beautiful Savior. A fresh perspective, and I was so challenged, and more in love with Jesus after the read!! Highly recommend =)

jen - just finished the lineage of grace. loved it

Amy@littleforalittlewhile - What a fun party! Love that she let brother and sister come along, sweet kids you have Meg. Also, those mismatched ones on the cake made me smile. So awesome.

Holly - My girlfriends and I have done Kelly Minter’s bible study books, each one is about 6 weeks. They are about Ruth, No Other Gods and Nehemiah. Jennifer Rothchilds Me, Myself and Lies is good too. Beth Moore’s are AMAZING, even if you do it without the DVD lessons.
Good luck!
Sometimes we just do the SOAP method of a particular book of the bible when we need a break from a person’s book study.

Juliana Whisman - I agree with Gina…anything Beth Moore! I really loved her Fruits of the Spirit one.
Love seeing how you guys celebrate your kids’ birthdays! Simple but so incredibly fun!!

Jen Boyd - We are currently doing “Not a Fan” by Kyle Idleman with our Church. Love it! Quite thought provoking.

Lia - Looks like a fun birthday party! I like the balloons – fun colors! I’ve been following along with the She Reads Truth plans for the last few weeks: http://shereadstruth.com
Speaking of running…I better get out of this house and go on one. So important for my mental health. Plus, I’m supposed to be training for a 12k on Dec. 1st. Yikes.

Stephanie - As someone who picks out Bible studies all the time, I recommend Stuck by Jennie Allen. It’s good to do with a few friends, it doesn’t cost much, and I had the most positive feedback from the group as a whole when we did it. Seriously, in all of the studies we’ve done at my church, usually I have 50-60% positive feedback at the time; with Stuck, I’ve had about 80% positive feedback, which I continue to get months later (I’ve never had such lingering results). http://jennieallen.com/projects/stuck

angela - Happy Birthday to your Talby! Love the pics! She is adorable!
There is a new book (or new to me) called *Not a Fan* that i want to do as a bible study…check it out!

Jennifer - Knowing God by JI Packer is so so good–different from those you have listed though. and i’ve heard feminine appeal by carolyn mahaney is great. let us know what you pick! πŸ™‚

Gina - Happy Birthday Talby!! Anything by Beth Moore is awesome!! I have done a few of her Bible studies with a group of friends so we all pitch in to buy the DVDs and workbooks. My favorite study of hers so far was Daniel. I did it about 5 years ago and would love to do it again. I learned so much!! Have a good weekend!

Lorraine R. - Crazy Love was amazing, 7 was also amazing but in a totally different way than Crazy Love….next on my list are Radical and Interrupted!!!

Amy - Happy Birthday to your girl πŸ™‚ Looks like a great party!
I suggest Romans. GREAT stuff πŸ™‚

shar y - Discerning the Voice of God by Priscilla Shirer. Just finished this study and it is awesome! Teaches how to listen for God’s voice and ways to find His voice that you never think of. You would really like!

Kristina - Although I haven’t gotten into it quite yet, everyone is suggesting “She Reads Truth”. It’s something you can do via Instagram which I looooooooooooooooove.

      IMG_9435-1

(i had my settings off on my camera so lets all pretend this is….a newspaper photo…ha!)

she had a great birthday.
so grateful and sweet.
she wanted ice cream sundaes but i had to get at least one cupcake.
we watched one of her favorite movies after dinner.
i like that kid a whole bunch.

IMG_20121112_191534

IMG_20121113_102517

we had a girls day just the two of us yesterday.

she used her birthday money (and her allowance…she is a saver) for some cute clothes.
i loved watching her pick stuff out.
she and i are finding our way.
me saying "it's ok to not like what i like" when we disagree.
or when she says "do you like it?" with a big smile then OF COURSE i like it.
i want her to form her own opinions…have confidence in herself and her choices.
i am so proud of her when she does.

and she is pretty darn cute.

*******************************************************

i got out my electric mattress pad for the winter.

oh yeahhhh.

my toes are nice and warm now.  :)

********************************************************

so…i got to see Flight on monday.

holy cows.

Flight_ver2
it is definitely rated R.
it was… hard to watch?  very real?  very grown up?  intense?  but seriously… SOOOOO good.

ha ha ha

it stuck with me.

but i can't quite figure out why….

and no spoilers in the comment section.
i don't want people getting mad at me!

the couple sitting next to us…they were talkers.
"oh no he didn't"    "oh no…don't do it"    "GASP!!!"

AND she sang the words to a whole song that was on the movie!

seriously.

and the school called craig at the very last 4 minutes of the movie.
so he missed the ending.
craaaaazy.

*********************************************************

have you filled your boxes for  Operation Christmas Child?

OCC-tiff

i usually post about it but time got away from me.

my kids loooooove to do this project.
i hope you do it too.

and i saw that if you drop off your shoe box at Chick-fil-a… YOU GET A FREE SANDWICH!

bonus!

*********************************************************

here is somehting happy for you this morning….

IMG_9481-3

IMG_9476-2

IMG_9464-1

i am off to run errands.
walmart…the bank…the post office.
so exciting eh?

what to make for dinner?
the question of my life…

melissa@joyineveryseason - I had a chance to see a movie but didn’t know anything that was out … so went to see Flight after reading your recommendation … John Goodman was SO FUNNY … and that scene in the stairwell was luminous. It’s stayed with me, too. Glad for your thumbs up … so glad I saw it :o)

Michele - I want to see Flight, but my husband, the commercial airline pilot, does not! lol So I guess it might have to be a girl’s night out!

amy - HaPpy BiRtHdAy to your sweet girl!!!!
girls days are the best! I have “kenzie dates” with my middle daughter. love that one on one time.
~amy

colleen sullivan - I love the black and white photo.. almost as much as the gumballs? That Talby appears to be a joy to raise… helpful post as I have an eleven year old girl child as well!
Dinner… not for tonite but in the future…my hometown has a dish called spiedies… you can get the original there (or even order the meat online and they will send) or make a the next best thing by ordering the sauce, marinating cubed boneless chicken, placing on skewers and grilling. Best served on soft white italian bread that u use to pull the chicken off the skewers. For a healthier version (sans white bread)i serve the meat next to orzo pasta and broccoli and dip them in any extra marinade that might be floating off the chicken. I grill all winter long… but I guess you could do inside under the broiler if you really have to. So quick, so easy, I usually buy the gallon jug! http://www.spiedies.com/original-endicott-style-spiedie-marinade-p-1750.html

Flower Patch Farmgirl - Thank you for loving rated R movies.
Here’s a question: Lars and the Real Girl. Have you seen it?
I have no idea why this just came to mind, but I think you might love it. I am a movie freak. I could go on and on….

Tiffany - Happy Birthday to Talby! She has SUCH a cool mom! πŸ™‚ YES, we do OCC shoeboxes too! My family filled our boxes a few weeks ago so I could share them with my class. I get the whole 5th grade involved in bringing them in!

Amy@littleforalittlewhile - I think that gumball maching may just be my favorite thing in your house. So colorful and happy πŸ™‚

kate - Talby is soooo pretty!!! happy birthday to her!

Lori H - Talby has grown up so much since i started following your blog…a long while ago. She is just beautiful. We already filled our shoeboxes – our church is a relay station so gathers from many churches and takes them to NC. I am making a no-recipe cajun thing…a “what’s in the fridge that I can use” kind of thing. So far, it looks yummy!

Tanya - My sister was always the saver ~ never me πŸ™‚
My kiddos are out tonight – I had an English muffin with peanut butter for dinner. Need the recipe?…lol.

monica - my mom and i fought alot over clothes when i was growing up. and now that my daughter is 11, i know that the clothes she wears is an expression of who she is. i love watching her make her own decisions and watching her grow into herself.
and, the supper situation is always a battle for us ! that sassy 11 year old daughter of mine is also a vegan. so its lots of fun trying to figure out what to fix. Good luck !

Sara Torbett - I loved reading about Talby’s birthday and your relationship. I am about to be a mom to another girl (my second) so I like reading/”watching” how you interact with your girls. πŸ™‚ So glad someone mentioned Parenthood in the comments! I didn’t get to watch last night and will have to catch up. Makes me tear up every single time. Such a good show. We’re having enchiladas for dinner… πŸ™‚

Becky - what to make for dinner is the question of my life too:/

Robin Canter - We saw Skyfall – the new James Bond movie. Really good and you could actually follow the story line on this one. I won’t give it away, but someone dies in it.

Kate - I love that you wrote about shopping with your daughter…I’m already learning to deal with differences in opinions when it comes to clothes, and my daughter is only 4! I loved shopping with my mom, and I’m thankful for the time shared, regardless of our differing styles. Happy birthday to Talby. She’s blessed to have you for a mom!

Jacci in Ohio - I love it when you get really random. The randomer the better πŸ™‚

alicia @ la famille - i want to see that movie too!! glad talby had a great day. she is growing up so much. love her smile πŸ™‚

Kelly - Actually… your enchiladas are on the menu at my casa tonight for the first time… with some black beans….

KirstenP - Happy Birthday to Talby! I love the ‘newspapery’ photo.
Meg, did you watch Parenthood last night? If not, then watch it online
as soon as you can, and then watch this youtube video about one part of the
show.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HU4pE6Vme3k

Shannon - I’ve been wanting to the operation Christmas child for the past few years but always miss the dates, I’ll be picking up my girl from school and heading straight to Walmart today so we can do this!! So glad you mentioned it and I’m looking forward to chickfila for dinner later this week too πŸ˜‰
Have a great week Meg!

Tiffany - No way he missed the last 4 minutes. No way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think its awesome that your daughter is finding her own style, me too! If it makes you smiiiile, it sounds perfect πŸ™‚

Beth Ann - What’s for dinner? I am making Ranch Chicken tonight for dinner. Easy-Peasy and everyone loves it.
I have no idea where the original recipe came from (I wish I could site it), I have made it so often I have it memorized:
In a large baggie shake together:
1 cup crushed corn flakes (could use rice krispies, bread crumbs etc)
1/4-1/2 cup shredded parmesan cheese (I shred mine fresh)
1/2-1 packet dry ranch (1 full packet makes it pretty ‘ranchy’)
4-6 boneless skinless chicken breasts (I pound mine out to be the same thickness so they cook at the same time)
dip chicken breasts in melted butter and then into the corn flake – ranch – parmesan cheese mixed and into a greased 9 x 13 baking dish.
Bake at 350 for about 20-30 minutes.
Easy and yummy.

Su@TheIntentionalHome - I want a rusted gumball machine. . .I love your happy pics. . .I am actually a little addicted to your happy pics. I can’t wait for your blog posts to come ot my email (they always come a day late) so I check in periodically to see if you have posted something new. πŸ™‚
We are having crockpot vegetable soup (with sausage in it). Recipe on my blog if you want to check it out. . .you can freeze the leftovers too. My kids love this and I love that it gets veggies in them. Serve it with Saltines and a block of cheese sliced. Here’s the recipe: http://www.susoutter.com/2009/10/crock-pot-vegetable-beef-soup.html

Tracy - Happy Birthday , Talby!! You’re one lucky girl!
Seriously, “what’s for dinner” is the story of my life, too. But SERIOUSLY, what’s for dinner at your house?? I need inspiration!

Southern Gal - This reminds me. This summer we were standing in line getting movie tickets to see Brave. There were three women ahead of us in line with a boy who was about 12. He wanted a ticket to see Teddy which was rated R. They wouldn’t sell it to him, of course. The women were going to see Magic Mike, so he had to go with them since none of them would give up Magic Mike. I nearly fainted. I wanted so badly to invite him to go watch our movie.

Southern Gal - Happy birthday to her! You have close birthdays with those girls!
I’m posting about OCC tomorrow. It did slip up on us this year.
Crock pot black eyed peas with sausage – it’s a good one to put in the pot and forget.

JulianneB - I saw β€œFlight” this weekend with my hubby for my birthday…Yes definitely R, wasn’t it. We had some talkers around us, and then about halfway through the movie, we hear a kid crying. Next we see his Grandma taking him out of the movie and saying, β€œWell you got to see what you wanted”. He looked to be about 5….wonder what he wanted to see…unreal. Near the end of the movie, two boys that looked to be about 6 and 9 came in because their movie was over and they watched the rest of the movie with the parents???

sarah j - Pulled pork tacos! Yum!

Jenna@CallHerHappy - Happy Birthday, Talby!
You know, I remember the point in my life where I was trying to figure out what I liked and wanting confirmation from my mom. It’s difficult for a girl, for sure. You’re doing the best thing for her πŸ™‚
Also, gotta love Chick-fil-a!
And, for dinner? I don’t know how you feel about meal plans, but I made a monthly one on my blog, and I couldn’t be happier about it πŸ™‚

we ate at Pizza Hut.
then came home and opened gifts and ate the cake.

Tiffany - Oh goodness, sweet sweet smile.

Kirsten J - Happy Birthday to Annie! Cutest little smile πŸ™‚

Andrea - So sweet! My youngest turns 8 in 11 days and counting. πŸ™‚
A question about the last post – did you ask permission from all her friends parents to put them on your blog? Did you just ask when they were dropped off or do they already know that this is what you do? I was wanting to post pics of my kids’ friends but was unsure about the best way to ask. Thanks!

jodi - days like that are the best – happy, happy for you all!

colleen from alabama - So FUN! What on earth is Bubble loaf? I’m sure it is some delicious concoction but i have no idea what it is… please share πŸ™‚

it’s about ANNIE.
can she REALLY be eight!?
you inspire, my friend!

Pamela Gordon - Annie is such a cute girl! I loved her birthday party pictures and this one above is adorable. Happy Birthday to Annie! A big girl now. Blessings, Pamela

Southern Gal - Happy birthday to her! Eight is big. Ten almost eleven is breaking my heart he’s so big. I know you know this, but it doesn’t get any easier even if you have older kids. Knowing this is the baby just makes me cling so hard to the little. Hold her tight. Love her big. I know you do.

jackie grandy - I love that first photo! I love the all the color and Annie’s smile! Happy Birthday Annie!
I love it when our kids just want a simple birthday. It shows that they’re content and happy with life!
Oh, I wanted to tell you that I saw a heart this week when I was making my daughter some fried eggs. I put the butter in and looked away and when I turned back to the pan, it was in the shape of a heart. LOVE THAT! I posted a photo of it today! I hope it inspires more people to start noticing hearts!
Happy Sunday!
Jackie

angela - Love those eight year old choices! Precious girl you have there!!

Sarah{Handbags*N*Pigtails} - What a cutie she is. Happy Birthday Annie! πŸ™‚
