loving the deck…

since the beginning of july i have spent every evening (and morning) out on the deck.
all the heart eyes!
IMG_2171SUPERskinnysideways
so this was our deck….BEFORE.
last summer and this summer until the beginning of july.
it was so depressing.
literally.
i would go out there and feel cruddy.
IMG_0493
i started with flowers.
i went to find some… and in july in kansas it’s not an easy task.
Just like with most places you are supposed to start in late spring.
but i was not motivated then… i was motivated now!
so i started at home depot.
they had Pentas and basically everything else was dead – SO DEAD.
so i bought the pentas.
then i went to Menards… they had cladiums.
then to Lowes… they had black eyed susans and petunias.
then walmart… they had vinca plants and zinnias.
then to my local nursery and got all the vines and draping plants and filled in with more vinca.
i went to world market and found cushions 50% off because it’s JULY!
and target for the fun picnic blanket that i turned into a tablecloth.
IMG_0445
i found this old cornice at an antique store in our town and thought “YES! This will help with character!”
IMG_1639IMG_2203
craig hung it up for me the same day!
IMG_2205
i blogged about our white table HERE.

the lights were also from target in the home & garden department.
to hang the lights…i could not find gutter clips in july either.
they claim they are seasonal (christmas) but i claim that is dumb… because it is.
after much discussion with a dude at Ace Hardware we decided that maybe some heavy wire would work?
and it did!
i bent wire into S shapes and bent it over my gutters and then strung the lights through.
i would have hung more but i didn’t think we had a ladder tall enough and craig wasn’t home to show me where the tall ladder was…
🙂
IMG_1610IMG_2150
with all those cute details you barely notice the gigantor speakers right? (ha ha ha)
those speakers are not attractive but they ARE effective.
they are awesome for our movie nights.
maybe i will paint them?!  i mean why not?! recover the black speaker with cute fabric?
anything would look better than giant black speakers.
but like i said… they work great! so they stay.
that old metal office cabinet i also found at an antique shop.
i want to paint it bright yellow but i haven’t had time yet.
and it weighs a TON so i have to be very ready because the men in family won’t want to move it twice.

i really like having mirrors in outside spaces!
they reflect more light and the views are always pretty.

IMG_0591
IMG_0482
i had LOTS of containers from when we redid the patio at the farm house.
(it was soooo cute and i miss that yard a bunch!)
almost all of my containers are old and junky that were other things originally… lard cans, galvanized buckets, trash cans, a bread box and a wash tub.
i bought a few BIG bags of dirt and got busy planting every container i had.
IMG_0563
this white cabinet has been everywhere in all the houses.
it originally was an old built-in in our Illinois house basement.
it came with the green glass knobs!
for awhile it was annie’s dresser, then held our games.
it was in my craft room… the living room… my bedroom…
and now it’s on the deck!

and i am guessing some one is going to ask how i hung things up on the siding?
well… i tried to find siding clips and couldn’t.
so i decided to just hang it like i would inside… and i put a nail in the wall.
that is making most of you cringe and pass out but it’s not aluminum siding… it’s wood.
and life is about more than having perfect siding.
so i did it.
the end.
ALSO… the small signs are hung with 3M command strips.
which could be one of the worlds best inventions ever.

IMG_0557
having chalkboards outside make for silly stuff that the kids feel like writing… right now it says “Justin Bieber 4 Life” and no one even likes Biebs anymore here so it’s just funny what will be written here.
the rainbow pillow cases were from IKEA.
the polka dot cushions are from Target… i just ordered even more.
IMG_1620
animals
everybody loves the deck… even the grasshoppers.
🙂
IMG_2119IMG_2170
every morning i wake up and have my coffee out here.
it went from the worst space in the house to AWESOME.

and i trash picked that white iron lounge chair over 10 years ago.
🙂

SUPERskinnysideways

Becky Kindel - I love how you’re able to make spaces so colorful, inspiring, and inviting. And that lounge chair is the best thing ever!

Lori - Meg- I would live on your patio if I could. The transformation is amazing! I just love it!

Your blog was one of the first I started reading years ago, and it is still one of my favorites 🙂

Melissa - Love love love – it’s amazing how much color and flowers can trasnform a place

Chris - This space is so happy! How you manage to keep all those flowers looking beautiful is like a miracle to me;)

chrissi - best deck ever.

Heather - Wow! I have serious porch envy right now.

Beth - O.M.Gee I have a major girl crush on your deck right now! We have a patio space that I have been milling over ideas to make it more enjoyable and homey. This post inspires me. I’m making it happen in the coming weeks. #goals

Karina - I love your deck. I would spend all my time out there too! (Where did the cornice go in the after pic? Please tell me it didn’t fall!)

Linda - You have an amazing ability for putting together space. I love it! I wish I knew ho to pull things together like that!

Mickie - Love, Love, LOVE it! I love to spend time on our patio too but I have to admit that yours just looks SO happy! And, I can always use happy. It just makes me want to hang out there with my coffee in the morning and wine at night. The perfect beginning and ending to a day!

jen - It looks great! Now will you please come to CO and do mine? 🙂

Rachel - Absolutley goregous! I LOVE it! Toally love your sense of hunour too x

Lisa - Of all the pictures you’ve posted on Instagram and on here I never noticed the speakers until you pointed them out. Haha! I guess I’m not very observant. Or they really aren’t that noticeable. I’m sure you’ll come up with a cool way to cover them but even if you don’t they really don’t stick out.

Lisa - Love what you have done out there, it’s beautiful!

Kristin S - Fly to NC and redo my BORING deck. In five years I’ve sat out there maybe… twice?

Renee - Do you have any advice on planting so many different flowers, especially when they’re sharing a pot? And keeping them all so alive and vibrant?

amyjupin - looks amazinnnnnggggggggg!
let’s layout and work on our tans and drink taladas!

Erin - looks great!! I love every thing! Almost bought that picnic blanket at target today. It was marked down. Now I want to go back for it. Lol!

Jenny B. - Meg, you amaze me! It looks wonderful! I actually did not notice the giant speakers until you pointed them out. Then I laughed because, hello… they are huge! 🙂 I was more interested in the fact that your electrical outlet is up high, as if it was put there just for stringing lights! This post makes me want to go out and decorate our back porch! It also makes me think about using some stuff outside that’s not necessarily made for outside (like mirrors, chalkboards, and school chairs!). Love all that stuff… Also, I remember when you got the Trex patio furniture, and I searched for it on Walmart’s website, and it directed me to a giant T-Rex lawn ornament. HAHA! 🙂

El - Where are your cropped white pants/jeans from that you are wearing with the green shirt in the 4th picture? Love the beautiful flowers!

deb meyers - …and those of us who bought oodles of potted color in spring may or may not have just heaved the sad and crispy remains into the compost…

ann a - We ate at a Mexican restaurant recently that had speakers up in the corner next to the ceiling. They were painted with big bright flowers (right on the black stuff). Your deck is unbelievable! (Except I believe it bc everything you do is awesome.)

Jeanie - I think your yard is wonderful. We enjoy our deck so much too. I just ordered a cow print and am anxiously waiting on delivery. I have to admit that I saw your family last night a at Stearman. I was so freaked out. It was like a celebrity sighting. Ha! My husband said. “You could tell her how much you love her blog”. But I was too star struck. Anyway, cute green dress and your family is darling! What nice teenagers you have. You are exactly the way you represent yourself on your blog and that is neat.

natalie - i am OBSESSED. girrrrl, this is SO GOOD. p.s. i buy plastic light clips at the thrift store because you’re right – they’re seasonal & that’s just plain dumb.

Kristen - I think it looks amazing! I love all of the little touches you added, but pretty much everything you create is amazing. 🙂

Talby’s room

i always like peeking into Talby’s space she’s made all for herself.
13 is an age where they are figuring out what they like.. trying new styles… growing up but not too far… one direction on the wall but still has special stuffed animals on the bed.
i love 13.

IMG_1829
i don’t think martha stewart is going to hire either one of us to make beds for her but who cares about that?
beds are for sleeping anyways.
talby enjoys organizing and having a clean space.
she gets that from her dad for sure.

IMG_1831IMG_1822IMG_1811
of course i love her chalkboard walls because i love that she and her friends can write & draw all over it.
i like when chalk boards look loved.
she also had a bunch of photos printed from her phone (with her own money even!) and used double stick tape to put them on her small wall.
it’s adorable.

IMG_1830IMG_1802
some of these were taken with a wide angle lens so they look kind of wonky.
i like her aqua color she choose for the two sides.
and then left one wall painted white.
she’s got style!

IMG_1836IMG_1814IMG_1818
i think it’s fun to see souvenirs still in use from years ago that i gave my kids!
and recent ones too!
IMG_1842IMG_4699
(btw…. Talby is not short for Tabitha, her friends just wrote that)

IMG_1821IMG_1840IMG_1801IMG_1800

meredith - One of my favorite blog post you’ve done over the last 5 years. It’s so fun to get to see one of the girls rooms how she chose to decorate it. I love the wall color and all of the framework about the bed. The chalkboard wall is awesome too!

Mindy - What a sweet room! It looks like it inspires so much creativity – love it.

stacy p. - Your Talby and my Heidi are so similar. She begged for a chalkboard wall, but we had to say no since we are putting our house on the market at the end of summer. :(. We did, however, allow her to pick paint colors and she picked a color that is just like a sunset (kind of a light orange) for the ceiling and a light gray for the walls. She saw the gallery wall and we are in the process of putting that together…I can always fill in nail holes! Cute room! Thanks for sharing…

Julie - I LOVE this room! It has spirit and style…great colors and patterns… and it makes me wish I had chalkboard paint on my wall as a 13 year old! Thanks for posting this!

jen - Love this!! It’s been great inspiration for my daughter and I as we finish up her room. The collage wall has been stumping us and Talby’s is wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

Kathy - This is absolutely BEAUTIFUL and totally makes me want to make over my daughter’s rooms now!!

Lisa - I love the entire room, especially the gallery wall! I used to have that EXACT same wooden house for displaying a portion of my thimble collection. It brings back so many memories seeing it again. It’s over 30 years old. She has an amazing style!

Susan - So sweet to see her passion for art and her obvious love of God…good job Talby!

Jenny B. - The gallery wall is my favorite! And… Talby is not supposed to be that grown up! I think she was only 8 or 9 when I started reading your blog, and that is just crazy. I love how you’re celebrating the now. You know that quote, “Yesterday’s the past, tomorrow’s the future, but today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.” 🙂

Christy - Love it, all of it! Especially the chalkboard & collage walls. She did a great job making it he own space.

Janelle - Can you do all the kids rooms? Would love to see the boys rooms for some boy ideas 😉

Wendy C - Thank you so much for blogging about Talby’s room – perfect timing as my soon-to-be 13 year old and I are just planning a redo of her room as our summer project. The paint color is perfect – we just started looking at colors and who knew there were so many shades of mint green!

Sara - Such perfect timing! Ever since you posted a pic of Talby writing on her chalkboard wall, I have wondered what her room looked like! Thank you for sharing! My 13 yr old twins want to “redecorate” their shared room. I will definitely show them this post to encourage them to go for it!

Kelly - Love it! Nice work, Talby. Takes me back to my own room as a teenager…many moons ago. I hope I can be the cool mom who hands over the reigns for teenage room design to my daughter. My parents did that for me, and it was good for me and for them!

Wendy C - Thanks so much for posting this! Love Love Love Talby’s room! My daughter wants to redecorate her room as our summer project and this provides so many idea – especially the perfect mint color paint. We just started looking at paint colors this weekend and who knew there were so many shades of mint out there!

Simone in New Zealand - Love it! She has great style. My daughter is nearly 11 and is always experimenting on her room too (she asked me to do a room makeover for Christmas gone and switched from aqua and pink to black and white with pink and gold accents). x

Lori - I love Talby’s room! Super cute!

tere - Nice work Talby. Your room is perfectly perfect. 😉

Nicole - My daughter has a very similar color on her wall. We kind of stopped decorating when we got done painting. I’ve just been inspired to continue!

Lisa - So adorable! She really does have style–and at such a young age! 😉

Kelly - Awesome job, Talby! Makes me want to go hunting up photos of my room when I was 13! Such a fun time. Megan, if you have pics of YOUR room at 13 how fun would that be to post?! 🙂

I love all of the verses on the chalkboard wall! And “cats scare me”. 🙂 Kelly

cleaning our kitchen

summer has been a whirlwind already.
my kiddos are all signed up for sports of every kind.
it’s been a revolving door of kids coming and going at all times of the morning and night.
but the sleeping in has been AWESOME!

we have been staying up late…
the kids have a tan already…
the grill is in use almost every day…
flips flops are everywhere…
swimsuits draped on every chair…

i LOVE SUMMER.

the cleaning the kitchen schedule has relaxed a bit.
because we are gone so often with ball games every night.
FullSizeRender-22
i even set an alarm on my phone so that we can remember to get the kitchen clean before bed.
i am that forgetful.
i know some of you are thinking “how can she forget to clean her kitchen?”
ummm…. i just don’t see the mess.
i have become blind to it.

but then on mornings when i wake up and see THIS KITCHEN i can remember more often.

IMG_7593it is SO GOOD to wake up to a clean kitchen.
and i feel quite strongly that the kids should be a part of keeping it clean.
they make most of the messes anyway.

the thing that is the best… the cordless vacuum.

Eureka Quick Up 2-in-1 Cordless with Battery Pack on Amazon.

you can also order it: Eureka Quick-up Cordless Vacuum without the extra battery for a little bit less money.

51CwV-rhJ5L._SL1200_
it’s one of my favorite gadgets.
i have even given them as gifts for friends that have wood floors!
it’s mainly for wood floors but you can use on carpet too… but i would think if you have carpet that you would already have a bigger vacuum that you are using for that.  🙂

i dislike sweeping with a broom.
it feels like you never quite get it all… and the sweeping the dirt into the dustpan is messy.

AND this is GREAT for cleaning up all the dog hair on our wood floors!!

this is really light and takes up very little space.
it has a battery that recharges after you use it.
and an extra battery if you want to do more than a small area.
we can usually get our kitchen, living room and dining room done with the charge of one battery.
and that’s what this is for…. quick jobs.
times when you would have normally gotten out a broom and swept.
this is much quicker.
and my kids don’t mind doing this job!
it’s a miracle!
even Annie (my 10 year old) can easily vacuum the wood floors.
FullSizeRender
as far as the other jobs… they aren’t quite as “fun”.

but none of them are difficult either.
and when we miss a night… they get to team up the next night.
so if annie missed her night on monday then talby gets help with her job on tuesday.
and sunday is usually a catch up day anyway and we all pitch in if we are even home.

Stephanie - What do you use to mop your wood floors? They always look so clean! We have three boys and a golden too! So I am very curious. 🙂

Ali - I love your kitchen ! What type / color / style of counter tops are in your kitchen?

Thank you!!

– Ali

jennibell - My sister swears by her cordless vac. I love your kitchen-cleaning idea and *will* be instituting it in the fall (when we are back on schedule and – hopefully – in our new home). Thank you for all the great ideas I come across on your blog. . .I shared your laundry post the other day with another blogger who is struggling with her laundry situation 🙂
You are “my kind” of summer mama!!! Wish we lived closer together to enjoy these more independent years together. . .

Joy Cronauer - I love your kitchen! It looks beautiful and comfortable at the same time!

Maria - We have wood floors and a Labrador. Cordless stick vac saves my sanity (almost) daily!

Alicia - can we discuss that calendar for a second? I’ve been looking for something like that to freehand our calendar. I love that it’s made to flip like a calendar. Can you point me in the direction of where to find it? Btw, your kitchen is amazing, as is your entire house!

Kathi - I love your kitchen!

Mindy - Your kitchen is beautiful : )

Melanie - Do you have hardwood or laminate flooring? I am ripping up my yucky carpet this summer and installing laminate wood flooring throughout the house, including the kitchen, but still torn on what shade/color to go with. I am also putting in a white IKEA kitchen (YAY) and I thought your kitchen here looked so, so nice. Thanks for the tip on the vacuum!

Sabrina - I have three boys, 4, 2.5, 10 months. I am blind to the kitchen mess every single night. I just want\need my quiet alone time at the end of the day, so I let my kitchen go. Someday it will be clean. I hope! 🙂

katie skiff - I need one of those handy vacs. I’ve been using my shop vac. lol We have similar rules for chores too – but I should add vacuuming!!

Marsha Kern - We love our cordless stick vacuum, with 2 dogs, 1 cat and wood floors it is the best!

RAINBOW STAIRS!

The Craft House has a back staircase off the kitchen leading up to bedrooms and a bathroom.
and for the last ten years it has looked like this…
IMG_2939
IMG_2944IMG_2942
for the past three years i have wanted to paint them but i just couldn’t get it done.
this spring i finally had a long enough break in rentals and craft weekends and i got busy.
i cleaned everything really well.

then i primed all the wood surfaces with Kilz2.
two coats.
IMG_2950IMG_2964IMG_2972IMG_3823
and then i painted the walls and the ceiling all same color – Ultra Pure White by Behr in Eggshell finish.
IMG_3836

after the walls and ceiling  THEN i painted the doors, baseboard, window trim and the treads in Behr Ultra Pure White Semi Gloss paint.
painting wood white takes like a million years and then three more coats after that.
but it is so happy and bright that it is worth it to me.
wood color honestly makes me feel sad to be around… not at your house but yes at my house.
it sucks all the light out of the room.
i wouldn’t be sad visiting your house all decked out in wood everywhere but if i had to LIVE in say… a log cabin?
i would either go into a deep depression or paint the log cabin white on the inside.
(and maybe the outside too)
i know me.

it felt like it took FOREVER to get to the fun part!
i was dying to start on the color.

i taped the edges around the stair riser to help me have straighter lines.
and then i could FINALLY start.
IMG_3144
i got the smallest size of paint i could… i think it’s a pint?
i used Valspar paint for the colors.
Bright Red
Hint of Cherry
Orange Ochre
Dandelion Wish
Chopped Chives
Lavish Green
Wishing Well

i am not brand loyal for paint.
it is purely based on which store i am closest to at the time i need the paint.

and i used a foam brush for the colors.
it just seemed like it would be easier to control for such a small area.

IMG_4018
(i am aware that i still need to caulk the baseboards… one step at a time)IMG_4082
——————————————- BEFORE ——————————————————- AFTER ——————————————–
stairs
i mean???
is there anything happier?!
no.
there is not.
IMG_7393
IMG_1374
IMG_5173
i touched up my mistakes with a little paint brush – OY VEH!
i had lots of time to think and pray and sing and plan while i was working on all of this.

IMG_5193
IMG_5169
and this is the polyurethane that i use on white painted wood projects.
i like it.
i used it a lot.
i used many coats since stairs get a lot of traffic.

IMG_1513IMG_1516
i may hang things on the wall.
i may not.

IMG_4750
it took a ton of time but it was worth every second.
i wish i would’ve done it when we lived here.
i wish i had it my house i live in now just so i could see it everyday.  🙂

rainbows forever!!!

Diane McVey - This is one of the most beautiful, awesome things I have ever seen! I absolutely adore it! You are right it is just plain HAPPY!!! It’s GREAT! You should be very proud of yourself for doing this!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - Yes! Yes! Yes!

Leslie - Those are some happy stairs – love them!!

Ruth Elder - You are one for being creative so….. go online, maybe Pinterest and look up wall art done with paint chips. You find a picture and make it out of ‘pixels’ of paint chips. I think that would be perfect in that hallway.

Kimberlee Jost - It’s stunning! LOVE it. It makes that area so bright and cheery!

Kristy Mendler - I love this! Looks awesome!

Bethany - Obviously this is the happiest staircase ever. And the fact that it’s a back staircase…just another reason to love the craft house. I’ve dreamt of one day having a house with a back staircase since I was a girl.

The Love List | Gloria York's Blog - […] Meg’s stairs make me happy […]

Andrea - I love this….. don’t you have stairs going to a basement???? boy would that be fun!!!!!!

Carol S. - Sensational. And yes, a ton of work!!

Gevay - I am so with you on the painted wood. It looks so clean and happy and bright. There is a designer on that design channel we all love who goes on and on about how awful it is to paint wood and how people are terrible humans for doing it. She’s been shaming me and now you have set me free to enjoy my painted wood again! Thank you MEG!!! 😉

Beth - Yep, SO COOL! I love it. Job well done!

Judy - Those stairs just make me happy to look at them! Fantastic idea!! I bet you feel happy every time you walk upstairs!! :0)

Talia - LOVE this! Please do this at my house! 🙂

jennyonthespot - Oh Meg. So much the very, VERY BEST!!!

Lisa - I freaking LOVE it! I am with you on the wood being depressing, I would have to paint it all white too…I know lots of people would not approve of that, but oh well!

jennibell - Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. Really, there are just NO other words. These are the BEST!!!

Kimberly - That staircase looks so light, bright, and happy now! I love it! Kudos to you for the patience it took to paint all of that!

bekkah - wow! this is impressive; your dedication/patience is inspiring 🙂

i totally know what you mean about being comfortable in your space vs someone else’s. i LOVE all the colors in your home/craft home but at the end of the day i am a neutrals/minimalist girl.

Kathleen W. - That is so awesome, bright & cheery ! Makes me want to paint my stairs ! You rock Meg !

iralee poore - yup- i love it! i know it was hard and a long process but it looks lovely!!

Megan - Meg-
you are sooooo awesome! thanks for posting the whole shebang…..I can hardly wait to do my back staircase! I have to wait until school lets out (I teach) but as soon as the end of June rolls around….I am breaking out the rainbow paints!

Thanks so much for inspiring me and helping me to be creative!

Jen@thecottagenest - It looks amazing! I could move right into the craft house!

robin - Best.inspirational staircase ever!!…

Kristin S - That is a true labor of love and I so love the end result!

I painted my two garage steps lime green a few years ago and it still makes me happy when I pull in my garage. Rainbow would be dreamy.

Corinne - Hi
Wondered what poly you used there’s no pic. All the ones I’ve tried on white turn yellow and I end up sanding and repainting. Looking at my coffee table now and I have to repaint again to get back to white. Love the stairs. Thanks

Janelle - If I had a million dollars, I would offer it to your for your house. It is so well done, with so much love & thoughtfulness!

Kristen - Meg, I love the way that you feed my need for COLOR!!!! There are 7.2 zillion projects that I should be doing at our house, but I just wanna paint my stairs now!!!!! You did an amazing job!!!

Kristin F. - They look amazing!! And I am completely with you on the painted wood bandwagon. We are in the process of buying my parents’ 1987 log home and the VERY first thing on our agenda? Paint every surface white. I cannot wait to live surrounded by painted wood logs.

Julie - Such a light bright cheery stairway to walk up and down in now. How old is the house Meg?

Kelly - I have never seen a prettier set of stairs! I bet it just makes you smile every time that you see them.

Oh.. and I completely agree about wood tones!

Su - I don’t like purple either. Noticed it got left off the stairs 🙂

And I could not live in a log cabin or a house with wood cabinets, wood trim, wood paneling either. . .when we moved into this house I painted everything white. . it was definitely 70s, Brady Bunch style wood. . .now it is happy.

Thanks for sharing the colors. . pinning it. ..I want to do my dining room chairs each a color.

Pam - Good heavens, we just did some painting so I can imagine how much time it took. And glory how hard to have done all that work and not see it every day. Beautiful, absolutely beautiful!

Cathy - I love it! A trick I’ve learned in all the painting I’ve done: paint, let it dry, tape, paint over the tape with the same color. After it dries, paint the bordering color. The first color is what will bleed under your tape a little bit and that’s ok because that’s the color you put down first. The bordering color won’t bleed through. Remove the tape and you’ll have a perfect clean line.

Ame - That is brilliant – what a fun, incredibly happy idea!

kim - lady, you are DEDICATED. this looks like SO much work (and love) went into them. the payoff is GRAND, they look amazing!! can’t wait to see these in person!

Kit - Meg! Way to go, it’s completely awesome!

sharon / theprincipledtype.blogspot.com - you are so brave and i am so chicken! lol. your ‘more color’ life beckons.

KWolff - Way to go! This would definitely make trekking up stairs a lot more fun! 🙂

old lamps are rad.

if i was a good DIY blogger i would have thought to take a photo of the lamp BEFORE this project.
but i was too eager to start and my phone had just died.
i found this lamp for $3 at a thrift shop probably two years ago.
the big round part is ceramic.  (awesome right??)
it was already white.
the base and the tall skinny part were a black-ish brass color.
i tried to live with it but i just couldn’t… so i took the lamp to my garage… i took Press-N-Seal and wrapped the ceramic part with sheets of PNS until it was completely covered.  i put PNS over the cord and the electrical parts too.

then i spray painted the brass with white spray paint that was already out from another project.
it was satin finish.
So then the lamp looked like this….
FullSizeRender-21
this is the only picture of have of the old original nylon-polyester shade that it came with… grainy and dark but you can see that it was like any old lamp you would see at a thrift shop or garage sale.
IMG_4133
when i buy an old lamp i am looking for one with a shade that has a wire frame underneath.
if you bought a lampshade now at a store the shades are made from a plastic form… which is fine and i have lots of those.
but if you want to recover it.. that is hard!
so with old lampshades.. the heavy duty wire base make recovering much easier.
honestly i wouldn’t even bother trying with a newer lamp shade.

i went through my fabric stash and chose ANY that i thought might possibly work in my living room.
IMG_4113
small b&w dots – michael miller/spearmint green with birds – joel dewberry
green birds – heather bailey/red flower – suzy pilgrim waters/gray pin dot – wavily
butterflies – anna maria horner/BIG dots – moda/
multi color dot – laura berringer/cream & black dot- riley blake/gray dot – jackie studios
mint green dots – michael miller (lilypad)/green dot – michael miller (mint)/large green circles – joanns
charcoal & white birds – robert kaufman/small black dot – hobby lobby/green &turquoise floral – anna maria horner

IMG_4112
i love ALL of these fabrics!
(i order almost all of my fabric from HawthorneThreads.com)
i draped them over the shade to compare.
i took a picture for myself to look at all of them to help me decide.

IMG_4122IMG_4121
my top five were: b&w birds – large green circles – big black dots – butterflies – red floral

FullSizeRender-21
i chose the red floral “panel”
it is printed like this.. in a panel not a continuous pattern.
and i got a close up of the designer so you could see it.
it really is a beautiful print!  it makes me want to paint when i look at it.

and then… i sat in bed and watched a show with my glue gun and made this lamp shade.
i showed a basic tutorial on how to recover lampshades HERE about three years ago.
IMG_0912
and while i’m at it i will show you the whole room in it’s current state.IMG_0903
oh hey look! we hung pictures on our wall!
one year later but we did it!

IMG_0917
i got the africa map from @sparrowmercantile on instagram.
the other map was from Bearly Makin It.
i made the curtains from the ikea fabric again to match the dining room ones.

IMG_0918
the be Brave sign is from Salty Bison.
IMG_0909
i found our piano on craigslist in december.
the couches and chairs are the ektorp from ikea.
they are holding up well… white isn’t perfect but i love it so much.
there is lots of pattern going on in here… i know.
but i like pattern.
and color.  🙂

IMG_0913
the chalkboard is just MDF painted with chalkboard paint that i used to cover up some ugliness at the farm house.
talby wrote song lyrics on it.  🙂

our buffets are matching and they were also from craigslist.
craig painted them.  (you can see them from last summer HERE)
the pictures and canvases are up but they will be changing/moving/rearranging  all the time.
(i order my canvases from all the canvas places… mpix – canvas on demand – canvas people – all of them)
and i think i will fill in that whole wall on the left.
i have a thing for photos.
i will keep adding “stuff” on this left side but for now it looks like this.
complete with Wii cords hanging down… so fancy.
IMG_0924IMG_0933
the ‘glass is half full’ print is from Studio Mela.

IMG_0938
IMG_0951
i moved it over to the door way for better light and i loved it over here too!IMG_0948
those red flowers make me so happy!
and how cute is that print from KatyGirl?!
the flower vase is from world market… table from Bearly Makin It… mirror was thrifted & spray painted.

IMG_0953
i can’t wait to find the next great lamp!
it’s so much more fun to recover and revive an old ugly lamp than to buy one done.

Lisa - Love this room! Can I ask where you got your “Smile” letters? LUV!!

Shelie - Absolutely LOVE your style. Our previous home was lots and lots of whites and neutrals and I was never really happy with it. Our new home has white, but lots of color too! Love your lamp too! I would have a blast thrifting with you!!

mary beth @ www.mbzinteriors.com - Hi, just found your blog. Your home reminds me of mine, lots of white but pops of happy colors. I adore your colorful staircase. We have a 1 year old Golden too who is on a professionally installed invisible fence. We had to raise the shock to the highest, he is friendly too. Now when he runs out without the color, he stops on a dime at the edge of the yard not realizing he does not have the shocker on.

Janet C - That first picture of the dogs cracks me up! They look so serious 🙂

lisa - Your home is so bright and cheerful… and looks so comfortable and welcoming. I say that means you’ve done a great job decorating!

Kelly O. - this post inspired me to look at my home in a different light…. we moved from our fabulous forever home due to a job transfer and I’ve never felt that this house “fits”–but after reading this post I will have a new living room full of colour pizazz and my style by the end of the month! thanks for sharing your inspirations and your quickie fixer uppers to thrift store finds!

sharon / theprincipledtype.blogspot.com - no kiddin’ just bought myself the coolest mcm (goes with your mad man crush! lol). it’s blue, tall, totally boss! funny story: it replaces the broken sunny white and green one (i loved) of which i asked/blamed just about everyone i know for breaking . . found out it was husband! never thought of him!! ha-ha.
you shade here is a beauty 🙂

Erin - I love your blog. Your home is gorgeous. It seems so happy and fun. I have a big family too. So I love to see how you set up your house to meet the needs of your family. Wish you could come to California and help me with my house!

Sarah Wolfe - It all looks fabulous… love ALL of it!

Lisa - I like all your patterns and colors, and I don’t think it’s overpowering at all since you have white backgrounds. It all looks very nice and inviting.

Kirsten J - Ok. Love it! I’d have gone safe with black and white polka dots prolly. And genius on the PNS. Are you kidding me?!?! Why have I never tried that?

Amy K. - I spy a “before” picture of the lamp in the ones with different fabrics draped over the shade! =)

Julie - There is nothing wrong with liking colours and patterns. It is so nice to see a home that looks like someone lives there. One that is not just looking like it is painted and decorated for resale. One that has personality and makes you want to explore. Love it.

Lela - Where did you buy that fabric used on shade? I need it!

KirstenP - You covered the whole lamp with Press-N-Seal – is that the plastic food wrap that comes in a roll? How did you get it all so smooth? The lamp is beautiful!

Jennifer - Your lamp turned out so nice, and I love how warm and comfortable your home looks. Like a place where you would be welcomed in and visit without being worried you were going to mess something up!

Nanette - That was my fabric pick for you too! I love it! Again, you have inspired me. I was thinking about recovering the inside of one of our lampshades…I might try it now!

Heather S. - You’re doing great? One year to get pictures up? No biggie! We’ve been in our home 5 1/2 years now and just finally did our master bedroom the way I wanted it done. It’s a fabulous little retreat for me now. Ektorp chair from Ikea, new duvet and cover also from Ikea, basket with blankets, and the best part…..a coffee station right in the bedroom! On Saturdays and lazy days we can have the coffee right there while we lie in bed and look out of our window watching birds…and this past Saturday – hot air balloons that floated past our hill. It’s dreamy!

pretty messes and painted pumpkins

IMG_9382
i was sitting down to write and looked over to this scene.
some would say “what a mess” and… it IS.
but look how pretty?!!
i couldn’t help but smile.
i sewed curtains for talby’s room last night with the turquoise fabric on the table (hobby lobby) so that is still out with the sewing machine.
new pillows coming to the shop… annie’s next project to go to class…. more zinnias from the craft house…newly painted mirror propped on the wall awaiting placement… and of course a bongo drum???

IMG_9378IMG_9369IMG_9389
when messes are colorful it is easier to not worry too much about them.

IMG_3014
we painted pumpkins on sunday night.
craig was sitting right beside us watching the Royals and we listened.
wood floors ROCK.
there was no worry about the paint at all!

IMG_3002IMG_3013
it’s just craft paint.
i am sure they wouldn’t last if it was rainy but our porch is covered and there is no rain in the forecast.

IMG_3004
talby REALLY wanted to make the melted crayon pumpkin we’ve seen around.
i will be honest… i tried to talk her out of it.
i am glad she was persistent.
it is AWESOME!

IMG_3022
annie had to make one too…. because little sisters always want to do whatever their big sisters do.  🙂
we took the labels off the crayons using an exact0 knife.
then hot glued them into place.
we used a hair dryer on high and the whole thing was done in less than five minutes.

IMG_9333IMG_3026
then monday night they each carved a pumpkin too.
i don’t care too much for this process so i let them do most of it on their own.
annie needed my help on the face and said “yeah mom… you’re an expert.  you’ve been doing this on your own for like FIVE years now!”
HA!
five years?  what a funny girl.

IMG_3075IMG_9339this has nothing to do with pumpkins… but when i look at this picture i think “you need to make this house more “YOU” Meg… cause this porch is NOT”

but then i get tired and think “CUTE PUMPKINS!”
IMG_9340IMG_9348IMG_9350

do you have halloween costumes all done?

annie is the only one i feel like i need to worry about anymore.
the others are in charge of their own costumes.
they are old enough.
and they change their minds too much.
so i ordered something off amazon for annie… and it’s checked off the list.

🙂

Laura - Thank you for inspiring me to add more color in my life! 🙂

Heather - WHERE did you get those napkins?!? I love them. I kind of want to marry them.

Angela - I love the fabric for the curtains, so pretty! I don’t miss buying or dealing with costumes now that mine don’t trick or treat anymore, I am a bad mom. 😉 lol

Julie - The pumpkins look awesome, but I think the pick of the photos is the zinnias and fabric. Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing them.

Aimee - I love your colorful pumpkins. When you painted pumpkins a couple years ago I loved it so much that my boys and I did it too. They had fun. We have costumes done. My youngest is going to be a slice of pepperoni pizza (from Target), my oldest is going to be a cheeseburger (from Amazon) and the dog is going to be a hot dog for the third year in a row. This is the first time the boys are doing a theme and it’s going to be awesome.

Su - love the polka dot pumpkin 🙂
and I HATE carving pumpkins. . that is a mess that is not pretty. I cannot touch that slime that comes out of a pumpkin. For many years, my dad came over and carved pumpkins with the kids which I was thankful.

Michelle - those are some of the happiest pumpkins I’ve ever seen! I’ll have to remember for next year 🙂

Angela - I love color just as much as the next person, but I have to say the white pumpkin that someone doodled all over is my favorite!

Traci - Ahhhhhh, so much fun!!

Kelsey - I love that in the second-to-last photo there is a knife sticking out of the pumpkin’s eye! Haha!

organized

IMG_8848
i took on a big project this weekend.
i was finally ready to organize the art supplies, clean up all the piles of junk that i had piled up here and make this “room” look nice.
there were a lot of art supplies and a lot of junk.

please ignore the gold light fixture… i haven’t found what i want for here quite yet.
AND a rug would look great under the table.
but that is liking begging my kids to spill things?!

IMG_8849
we found this furniture on craigslist for a steal on memorial day and worked all summer on it.
it was so much priming & painting.
oh so very much.
photo-10.PNG
IMG_8852
but it was totally worth it!

IMG_8862IMG_8865
we don’t own any china to put in the china hutch.
we don’t even own a set of regular dishes.
for real.
i have lots of mismatched random dishes.
but not in a cute way…. it’s just mismatched.
but someday when i won’t have to worry about plates breaking often i will get cool plates.
and a rug under the table.

anyway… i knew this cabinet would be the perfect place for all of our arts & crafts supplies.
easy to access and pretty too!

so this is what i started with….
photo-78
and this is when i finished.
IMG_8877

the watercolor paints are from Michaels – $4.99!!
we use SINGER Heavy Duty Sewing Machine.
we love it so much that we have two.   🙂

IMG_8893IMG_8892IMG_8969IMG_8982IMG_8890
IMG_8930
it feels so good to have it DONE!
and now i know where everything is and where it goes.
i would like to paint the back wall of the hutch white.
but let’s be realistic… ain’t nobody got time fo’ dat!
it’s staying green.

IMG_8900
remember my trip to the sunflower field a few weeks ago?
i had my favorite photo from that morning made into a canvas through mpix.com.
it is kind of amazeballs?!!

it looks like i am standing in that field all over again.
it is slightly bigger than actual size… but not much!
the colors are so bright!

IMG_8861
i decided that this canvas was worthy of the first nail hole in the wall at this house.
the little house painting is by noodle and lou.
it pretty much completely adorable in every way.  it’s a drawer.  she painted the inside of a drawer?!
and the roof has polka dots?!  seriously.
she usually lets her fans know in her instagram feed when she puts some goodies in her shop.
and they are gone in an instant.

IMG_8949
i brought my gumball machine home from the Craft House.
i loved looking at it there but thought how sad i would be if anything happened to it there accidentally.
and all my heart rocks are in that jar.
sigh.
i love those rocks.
it’s weird to love a rock.
but i do.
cause i am weird.  🙂

IMG_8926
we painted the chairs and we also recovered them.
i found the floral fabric curtain panel at our local thrift shop and broke into a sweat immediately.
it was like finding treasure!
i still walk by these chairs all the time and say out loud to my empty house “gorgeous!”

IMG_8927IMG_8879
hi stan.
please move now.

IMG_8921
(the gingham napkins are a target clearance purchase)IMG_8932IMG_8937
just for fun… a peek into the kitchen.
dirty dishes and all.

everyone asks where the lights are from… Menards.
and the paint color is Sea Shell Gray by Valspar.
i will post more about the kitchen later.

IMG_8940
IMG_8951IMG_8961IMG_8958IMG_8934IMG_8875
we have two tiny goldfish in that tank filled with neon pink rocks.
i think my girls are ready for something a little bigger in there to keep them company.

IMG_8947

And on another note, you could put shelf liner on the back of the craft hutch. It would be easily changeable when you wanted something else plus break up the green a bit. Chicshelfpaper.com has really cute designs and their papers seem to be very good quality, I ordered samples and am having a hard time picking what design I want to use!
