three things

#1
I got to talk with Haley Williams on her podcast “Kindled”
we talked about creativity, the Craft House and lots of other stuff.
Click over and check it out.

#2
this looks really good and fun to make too!
i like the Tasty site because of the videos!  I am a visual learner who enjoys instant gratification.
i love being able to see the whole recipe so quickly.
the recipe is here: Cinnamon Roll Apple Pie

#3
i have been searching for inspiration to remodel our master bathroom so i have been thinking about allllllllll the tile.
the only thing i am almost sure about is a freestanding bathtub.
but everything else is still undecided.
i am going to choose something white and maybe some black (but probably not).
but if i was the kind of lady that got to redo things majorly whenever i got tired of them… i would choose something really colorful.

i love all of those colors!
how fun is that pink vanity?!!!

Jill - Does Mr. Duerksen get a vote on a pink vanity in his master bath? ;-} Asking for a friend.

Tracy Koeppen - I like the green vanity! Paint is easy to change so you could easily change it once you decide to move on… green tile not so much.. Lots of pretty choices!

things i am loving…

Salon Perfect –  Stick To Your Guns
this is my current favorite nail polish color!
i do currently have this color on my nails but this lady’s nails look so much better than mine.
i found this at wal-mart – $4.

these cookies made me super happy.
and i ate A LOT of them!

have you seen some of katie daisy’s new work?
painting in her fabulous style on top of beautiful photos!!
she makes EVERYTHING beautiful!

I saw this a few months ago in the theater and just wathed it again at home last night.
such a good movie!!
two thumbs up!

this advertisement for this tee came across my IG feed and i LOVE it!!
it was from The Pink Lily.
this isn’t an ad on my part… and i have no idea about this shop but this shirt is perfect!
i am ready for all the christmas music and cookies and movies!!!

Slow Cooker Mac & Cheese
i made this recipe for our church potluck today – SO EASY!!!
i doubled it even and there wasn’t a single bite left to bring home.
i love my crock pot!!!

i think i found my halloween costume…. HA HA HA!

i have new Mini Scrap Bunting in my shop in FALL COLORS!!!
this was so fun to put together!
go check it out!

Heather - Just got my bunting in the mail this week and I ADORE the size of the squares and the length of it!! I hope you make some more for Christmas in this bigger size! Have a bunch of places I want to stick it! Thanks!

Iris Brown - I love all these suggestions. Especially the mac & cheese recipe!!!!! 🙂

more summer memories

we only made it to this waterfall once this summer!
that’s a total bummer.
we never know what we will find when we turn down the path towards the water.
this year the water level was low so there was not much to explore.
but being outside on a beautiful day is always good!
and we added this day to the many memories of coming here together.

we even got kobe to try swimming for the first time!
he hated it.

we tried to watch the sunset as much as possible from our firepit.
sometimes that included margaritas… sometimes chickens… sometimes both.
and sometimes we’d even have s’mores and an actual fire.

i used my stash of linens and cutter quilts to recover all the craft house porch cushions.
it felt great to use my sewing machine again!
it had been way too long since i had gotten that out.

i did SO MUCH GARDENING this summer!
i hope with all my heart that it all comes back next year – or at least 75% of it!!
it doesn’t look great this year but next year it might fill in and be fabulous.
fingers crossed.

annie learned to use the riding mower this summer!

sean turned 17 years old!
i think that is pretty rude of him to just keep growing up without my permission… just kidding.
he is a super fun kid.
i enjoy spending time with him so much!

we spent our 4th of july very differently than ever before!
we were in a tiny theater and we were in the 7th row.
it was THE BEST CONCERT!!!
it was surreal…. to be so close and for them to sound so incredibly good!
and craig sang every word to every song.
and i love that.

Laura Oyler - Can we talk about what’s going on with Sean’s cake? Because that looks delicious!

Tam - Love all the pictures ♥️♥️

Kerri - We attended our first concert at the Stiefel just last night (we’re in Ellsworth). What a great, intimate venue!

Katie - Wondering what kind of cake that is for Sean’s birthday – it looks like ice cream, but isn’t melty. Looks delicious! Please share!

Kacy - I love the Stiefel Theater. And the Avett Brothers. We just moved to Nebraska from Beloit, KS and we ALMOST bought tickets to that show, but didn’t quite know how moved/settled we’d be. We did see a Michael W Smith Christmas Concert there a few years ago that was incredible though. We sat up in the balcony and felt just as close.

summer is here!

kansas in the end of may and beginning of june is THE BEST!
Yellow fields of wheat everywhere you go!

talby got to go to prom!
she went with a group of friends and had a really fun time.

picking out her dress was actually lots of fun!
annie came along and we put her in charge of hanging the dresses back on the hanger.
i was in charge of getting the next dress off of the hanger and ready to put on.
#teamwork
and then we wished annie needed a gown for something special too because this one was SO cute!

a sleepy Friday night at our house while “watching” the NBA finals.

Chickens and peonies! two of my favorite things!

these black & white ones are two of the “babies” – getting so big.

love my shirt from All Good Things Collective!  It’s really really soft!

i think i was trying to take a picture of the house being really clean but these guys wanted a pic instead.
they are cuter than a clean house anyway.

this spring in the flower beds, daisies came up EVERYWHERE!
which was fine with me!
and ladybugs were everywhere too – that’s for good luck,  right?

a wheatfield before it was yellow on a stormy day.
i drive this road alllll the time.

craig had a birthday and we can’t remember doing anything!
i took this picture of the donuts so i know we had that – but otherwise we have completely forgotten.
must be our age…

the building behind him is the little bitty hospital where he was born.
we were in that small town for a track meet just before his birthday and i had him pose for this memory.
🙂

i spray painted an old bed for the Craft House last week in this beautiful bright sun yellow.
it made me feel so happy!
and all that pom pom trim at hobby lobby always make me smile.

scott’s birthday is just after craig’s.
to celebrate we ended up at the zoo!
interesting choice for a 19 year old’s birthday but it was fun and something we do much anymore now that they are getting so much older.
when we arrived we found out it was also a Cinco De Mayo festival going on!
to get from one area to another at the zoo our whole family had to walk single file straight through the dance floor FULL of people dancing and celebrating to a very loud live band… it was so funny!
Scott chose Texas Roadhouse for his birthday dinner and we even go him to ride the birthday saddle!
i used to cook their favorite meal for their birthdays but now we go out to eat at the restaurant of their choice.
it’s just easier with kids not living at home, busy schedules of teens and all that goes along with that.
and then after dinner – i make them take a selfie.
because i can!

happy birthday scotty boy!

i had craig teach me how to use the jigsaw!
power tools make crafting even more fun!

annie learned to use the riding mower last week!
she was very cautious (s l o w) but there’s nothing wrong with that.
hopefully she’ll want to do it more than just that one time.
this below was the view behind me when taking that picture of annie – quite dramatic!

the peonies at the craft house are always so gorgeous.
And half the house still has the old purple & cream trim while the other half is sporting the new navy & white!
Painting a house is such a long process!

we took all three of these nerds to the vet at one time.
#dumb
but at least it’s over and they are up to date on their vaccinations.

talby competed in track all year in the 300 hurdles & 100 hurdles.
she’s the blurry one on the right side of the pic.
but hey… check out that sunset!

the girls 4×4 relay team made it all the way to State!
Talby was an alternate for this team.
three of the four girls on that state team were freshmen!
can’t wait to watch them over these next three years – they are so fast!

meixcan food on mother’s day for the win!
and clearly we liked our meals – clean plate club.
also i took a 3 hour nap that day!
craig painted the guest room for me and arranged for new flooring to be put in it as my mother’s day gift.
i was definitely happy about that.
annie knows that starbucks is my favorite and got me a gift card (to take her there – ha!)

on the last week of school annie had a choir concert.
we curled her hair and put on a little makeup and suddenly she was 20 years old!
what the heck?
slow down with all this growing-up-at-warp-speed stuff kids!
it’s not nice.

see what i mean?
grown!

but not too grown to bring home giant frogs from the pond nearby just for fun.
this was the biggest frog i’ve seen/held in my life.

first summer campfire in the back yard fire pit.
this spot is pure loveliness.
we will be watching the sunset as many times as we can from this spot.

and these are all my plants i have to plant.
i did put about 1/3 of them in the ground already but the rest is waiting patiently for me to get my act together!
thankfully i like gardening a lot – not digging out the rocks and the roots… just regular flower planting.
and speaking of that – i need to go water these pots right now.

Sarah D - I’ve been following your blog for years and check in every once in a while. I cannot believe how fast kids grow! My 13 year old is taller than me now at 5’10! God bless you in your journey! Thanks for still blogging! I love taking photos and you have SO many great photos!

meg duerksen - HI meredith! I got that rug about 2 or 3 months ago from homedepot.com!

Ann - Yea for Talbys modest dress!!!! How very classy!!!

meredith - Great pics Meg! Can you tell me where you got the rug that’s in your family room? Thanks! 🙂

Kathy L - What a lovely post……lots going on and beautiful pics!!

Dana Powell - I just love your happy blog. 🙂 And today I was doing laundry and thought ‘that was dumb’…and instantly thought of you. It should be your trademark phrase!!

Lorri - Love this post! A sweet, happy peek inside family life. Happy summer!

so many projects!

life is moving along over here.
we have so many projects happening at once that i have shouted “we cannot do one more thing until we finish this list!” and then had to tell myself the same thing in my head 10 times a day.
i see all the weeds in the flower beds – “nope.  look away! they will be there next week/month!”
i see the junk drawers in the laundry room – “SHUT IT.  that mess will wait.  It is not on the list”
i walk by the fabric i bought for curtains back in december – “NOOOO! stick to the list!”
sheesh.
so i must push through… and not deviate from the crazy long list.
and i cannot wait to be done!

this rug!
i love it so much!
although… do not leave it out in a huge week long rain storm… it will fade a lot.
boo.

my mom found me this super great vintage floral rocking chair and it is IN the living room now.  🙂
it’s my new favorite thing.
behind it you can see the box where the baby chicks were living for a few weeks.

they are out in the coop now – too stinky to keep inside for long.
we got 3 barred rock and one buff orphington.
we’ll see if they are all girls… fingers crossed!
we aren’t allowed to have roosters according to the city rules.
and also roosters are loud!  no thank you.

over the last few months we have been to SO MANY volleyball tournaments.
sometimes siblings come, sometimes other family, sometimes it’s just me or just craig.
we were in Kansas City for a three day tournament last weekend.
i have never seen anything like that – 70 something courts??? CRAZY!

between games we got to do a little antique shopping in the West Bottoms in KC.
it was faaaaabulous.
this is me trying to get craig to appreciate this cabinet and want to buy it for me.
he didn’t bite.    #sadface

it was a really great place to find junky treasures.
i could’ve shopped five times as long as i got to… no one else was as excited as me about the antiques.
can you believe i didn’t buy that rainbow afgan?  or the jesus paint-by-number?? I have a collection of jesus pictures!? what is wrong with me?  it’s amazing!

i’m jealous that sean can do that eyebrow thing!

annie is such a great baker!
she made this cake just because she wanted to – and it was soooooo good!

waffle finally got a much needed haircut.
He loooooves not having all that hair – runs around all happy and funny after the haircut.
and i am happy to not have hairballs floating all around the house.

our first sunset of 2017 out in the firepit.
so happy to have so many more this summer!

i got some new rugs – i ordered from home depot because they have free shipping and you can return anything to the store.
this one was a total win!

one of the projects we are working on… (craig i mean) was putting in new flooring in the basement!
it was all carpet down here before.
and now it’s this awesomeness!
time to bring on the fun details like pillows, art work,  furniture etc!
we watch movies down there with the projector – like a movie theater – kinda.
way to go mr. duerksen!

i found this table & 6 chairs on craigslist for $200.
it looks exactly like our current craigslist table but it has two big leaves to seat lots more people.

i sanded, primed with KILZ2, painted with Behr Premium Plus Ultra Pure White and sealed it with Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish.
three of the chairs weren’t worth saving but three of them were.  🙂
but we already had six from the first CL table purchase.

and now we can have more than just our family at the table!
finally!

you can see the pics from the first CL table -click here…. there was also a hutch and two buffets in the deal!
and to see what we did with them – click here!
the house looks a lot different now but that shows the first steps.  🙂
craigslist is the BEST!

Kari D. - What did you use for the flooring in the basement? Love the color!

Emily - How do you keep your vintage fabric furniture from smelling……”vintage”?

Kristin S - OH, and pedestal is a life changer. You can fit so many more people around the table!

Your posts make me want to move to Kansas.

Tiffany - You guys did a great job on the flooring!

Caroline - Oh how fun it would be to go antiquing with you! Are you also using the R&F eyelash stuff??? Or do you just have great lashes naturally? 🙂

Lori - Love your photos! Waffle in a hoodie- ha!

girl power

today i have three special women to share about!
these women inspire me and are great examples of following their passions in life.

she is incredibly thoughtful & kind.
she is encouraging to everyone she meets.
she is a creative genius – it’s true!

she teaches how to use your DSLR camera and/or your phone’s camera – all online!
you can learn anything you wanted to know – at your own pace, in your own house.
there are so many great courses on her site!

my friend wrote a book about friendships and it came out today!
Never Unfriended by Lisa-Jo Baker
1. how beautiful is that cover?? talk about perfect colors!
2. i love that she wrote a book on this subject because seriously… friendships are wonderful & amazing but not always – right???
3. when i met lisa-jo i was just supposed to get a ride to my hotel with her but she insisted i eat with them and spend the rest of the day with her group!  she is good at this friendship thing.  i can definitely learn from her and maybe you can too!

And another book came out today too…. but a different kind!
Simply Tuesday Adult Coloring Book by Emily Freeman
This is to go alongside Emily’s book Simply Tuesday: Small-Moment Living in a Fast-Moving World.
what a fun idea emily!!

february is over???

i have tried to sit down to blog for a long time!
but i just couldn’t get to it… sports and dinner and work and chores and blah blah blah!
crazy!
but here’s an update on my world.
TWINNING! the boys and the girls.

Lauren turned 22!
it’s wild to even think about how we have a “child” that age!
we took her to lunch and of course… SAM’S Club for groceries.
i love having us all together even if it’s just for a few hours.
going out to eat with 5 big kids/young adults is actually really fun!

Craig & Annie got to enjoy a WSU Shockers basketball game last week and just happened to be right behind Fred Vanvleet & Ron Baker!
my friend sent me the picture from the shockers IG with the text “what the heck?!”
and i said “what? that they are at the game?”
she said “THAT’S RON BAKER!” and i said “i’m not sure who that is but it sounds exciting!”
ha ha ha!
i was quickly schooled on WHO they were – former WSU players who are now in the NBA.

i saw this sign on @saltybison‘s instagram and immediately clicked over and ordered it.
🙂
it just felt right.
it will hang among my fun pics in our bathroom.

lots of love for mr. duerksen – he’s a keeper!

regular moments – chatting and laughing while making school lunches.
this was my “office” last week… all the furniture pulled together to keep the dogs from bugging me.
it didn’t quite work.
my thrift shop embroidery score!
i thought i would put it at the Craft House but i am liking it here at my house for now.

my friend Pam has been back in the states for a few months and heads back to Liberia on Monday.
that is sad for me and happy for her.
before she leaves she made sure to come over and teach me how to make cinnamon rolls!!!
it wasn’t as hard as i thought!  i was super proud of these pans of yumminess!
and we made cheesecake too – because it’s THE pam of Pam’s cheesecake.
we couldn’t NOT make that!

last week i did something completely new for me – i cooked for a 4 day retreat at the craft house!
Stephanie Ackerman hosted the Creative Soul Retreat at the Craft House with Julie Carson as her speaker.
16 women… just like Camp Create but instead of leading the crafting projects i was in the kitchen making 3 meals a day.
it was very different but i liked it very much!
i tried to be as organized as i could be with lists and more lists.
i enjoyed being at the house with the group but in a totally different role.
and i always love spending time with Stephanie!
Royer’s Pie Haven sent a box of mini pies!
just a whole bunch of pies in a box – you should totally order these for a party!
so darn cute!
oh… and delicious too!

these were some fun ladies to cook for!
and she’s having another retreat in October – spots are open now!

and since i got to spend so much time at the Craft House last week – i took more pictures!

“abundant need” sign is from jaxnblvd.com.the 2017 calendar for the Craft House Rentals  is almost completely booked!

july 21 – 23
august 11 – 13
november 24-26 (thanksgiving weekend)  last year all the women of a family rented it, made crafts AND did their black friday shopping too!
such a fun idea! maybe your family should do that this year?!!!

and possibly october 27-29 – because it is marked “Reserved”  but i cannot figure out WHO booked this weekend so i am 95% sure i just wrote down the wrong dates.
if it’s YOUR group that reserved it – please please please email me right away.
i have searched through every form of contacts i have and cannot find anyone asking for that weekend.

and if you want any of the other dates listed let me know!  🙂

Cassandra Heck - That “Abundant” sign <3 <3 <3 those words are beautiful, love it!!

Karly - Dear Meg, I have followed your blog for probably 7 years. I remember bfirst coming across your colorful blog when I was an art teacher! Somehow a link brought me to a cute project you did with your kids ( I think it had rainbows or turtles in it)! Anyways I have always checked back in every week or so to see all of your inspirational posts and adorable family. It’s hard for me to believe how big your kids are getting. I am still at the beginning of the parenting phase. I have a 1.5 year old and almost 4 year old. Thank you for blogging and showing us a little bit of your life! One day when the kids get older I am going to come to the Crafthouse for a weekend! 🎨🌈❤🌻

meg duerksen - KatyO, Mary & Michelle M – i purchased that sign from jaxnblvd.com! They have hundreds of awesome signs!

KatyO - I came to the comments to ask about that “Abundant Need” sign as well! It is FANTASTIC!

Mary - I’m with Michelle M – could you please share where you got the “there is an abundant need” sign? Love it! -Mary

Michelle M - I love your updates and photos. Your life is colorful!

Please tell me where to get the There is an abundant sign from. Al I think it is you who has another sign on the stairs that I love. Can you tell me who made that one too-if it is you.

Thanks,
Michelle

cindy b. - loved my four-day weekend at the Craft House with Stephanie and Julie! Meg, you were a fantastic chef 🙂 thanks for loving on us! ALL of the food was great!!
