Volleyball 2017

what a great season talby had this year!
we truly enjoyed watching these girls play together every game.
they played hard but also got along so well!
watching teammates encourage each other and enjoy their time together is such a joy.

they won several of their tournaments during the season.
they won substate and went all the way to the semi finals at state taking home 3rd place in 3A.

volleyball is talby’s favorite sport and i love watching her do what she loves.
she’s competetive and works hard.
i really enjoy when all my kids are together supporting each other.
we are all so proud of talby!
we’re bummed the season is over and already looking forward to next year!

Pam Weaver is a wonderful photographer in town.
she does family photography but she also takes photos at the high school sporting events.
i am so grateful because it lets me watch the game and not have to think about pictures.
she is a blessing to so many parents here in Hesston.
if you are in the kansas area… definitely check out Pam’s website for any photography needs you have!

Marcia (OrganisingQueen) - I just popped on to say that pic of Talby about to hit the ball is amazing and should be framed 🙂

Jo - Wow great photography! she captured the emotions and the action.

Brady W. - Dang! Your girl can get some air!! That is such a blessing to have a photographer take care of the pictures so you can just watch and be in the moment. Volleyball is so fun to watch! Congrats, Talby!

Kelly - Congrats girls! So fun to see these pics! Kelly

so many projects!

life is moving along over here.
we have so many projects happening at once that i have shouted “we cannot do one more thing until we finish this list!” and then had to tell myself the same thing in my head 10 times a day.
i see all the weeds in the flower beds – “nope.  look away! they will be there next week/month!”
i see the junk drawers in the laundry room – “SHUT IT.  that mess will wait.  It is not on the list”
i walk by the fabric i bought for curtains back in december – “NOOOO! stick to the list!”
sheesh.
so i must push through… and not deviate from the crazy long list.
and i cannot wait to be done!

this rug!
i love it so much!
although… do not leave it out in a huge week long rain storm… it will fade a lot.
boo.

my mom found me this super great vintage floral rocking chair and it is IN the living room now.  🙂
it’s my new favorite thing.
behind it you can see the box where the baby chicks were living for a few weeks.

they are out in the coop now – too stinky to keep inside for long.
we got 3 barred rock and one buff orphington.
we’ll see if they are all girls… fingers crossed!
we aren’t allowed to have roosters according to the city rules.
and also roosters are loud!  no thank you.

over the last few months we have been to SO MANY volleyball tournaments.
sometimes siblings come, sometimes other family, sometimes it’s just me or just craig.
we were in Kansas City for a three day tournament last weekend.
i have never seen anything like that – 70 something courts??? CRAZY!

between games we got to do a little antique shopping in the West Bottoms in KC.
it was faaaaabulous.
this is me trying to get craig to appreciate this cabinet and want to buy it for me.
he didn’t bite.    #sadface

it was a really great place to find junky treasures.
i could’ve shopped five times as long as i got to… no one else was as excited as me about the antiques.
can you believe i didn’t buy that rainbow afgan?  or the jesus paint-by-number?? I have a collection of jesus pictures!? what is wrong with me?  it’s amazing!

i’m jealous that sean can do that eyebrow thing!

annie is such a great baker!
she made this cake just because she wanted to – and it was soooooo good!

waffle finally got a much needed haircut.
He loooooves not having all that hair – runs around all happy and funny after the haircut.
and i am happy to not have hairballs floating all around the house.

our first sunset of 2017 out in the firepit.
so happy to have so many more this summer!

i got some new rugs – i ordered from home depot because they have free shipping and you can return anything to the store.
this one was a total win!

one of the projects we are working on… (craig i mean) was putting in new flooring in the basement!
it was all carpet down here before.
and now it’s this awesomeness!
time to bring on the fun details like pillows, art work,  furniture etc!
we watch movies down there with the projector – like a movie theater – kinda.
way to go mr. duerksen!

i found this table & 6 chairs on craigslist for $200.
it looks exactly like our current craigslist table but it has two big leaves to seat lots more people.

i sanded, primed with KILZ2, painted with Behr Premium Plus Ultra Pure White and sealed it with Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish.
three of the chairs weren’t worth saving but three of them were.  🙂
but we already had six from the first CL table purchase.

and now we can have more than just our family at the table!
finally!

you can see the pics from the first CL table -click here…. there was also a hutch and two buffets in the deal!
and to see what we did with them – click here!
the house looks a lot different now but that shows the first steps.  🙂
craigslist is the BEST!

Kari D. - What did you use for the flooring in the basement? Love the color!

Emily - How do you keep your vintage fabric furniture from smelling……”vintage”?

Kristin S - OH, and pedestal is a life changer. You can fit so many more people around the table!

Your posts make me want to move to Kansas.

Tiffany - You guys did a great job on the flooring!

Caroline - Oh how fun it would be to go antiquing with you! Are you also using the R&F eyelash stuff??? Or do you just have great lashes naturally? 🙂

Lori - Love your photos! Waffle in a hoodie- ha!

amazing season!

so… i am 41 years old.
i was a football cheerleader for four years in high school.
i have been to tons of games – pee-wee, middle school, high school, college!
i have “watched” football for most of my life.
but literally until Sean’s last two games… i had never really been IN it.
my eyes were seeing the games but my mind just didn’t engage.
there are so many weird rules and points and flags and numbers.
i just had no clue what was truly happening other than who had the ball and what the score was.

BUT during the semi-final game – it was like it all clicked – my head with my heart.
i watched every play.   i was yelling and cheering!  i wanted those boys to win!
i knew how hard they’d worked ALL season and what a big deal these wins were.
our town’s football team hadn’t made it this far since the 90’s.

fullsizerender-74
they made it all the way to the State Championships!
they played in the afternoon in a college stadium.
and i think our entire town came to cheer them on!
we had the lead from the end of the first quarter.
those boys were making great decisions and working together so well.
i was updating scott by text constantly who was in nebraska at a basketball tournament.
i finally made craig do it so i could save my battery.
it turned into a heart breaker of a game – went into overtime at 42 – 42.
the other team scored a touchdown and all of sudden it was over.
it was silent on our side of the stands.
tears from the boys and lots from their mamas too.
we were just sure they’d win it.
darn it.
they played their hearts out!
fullsizerender-55
sean’s personal cheering section!

Pam Weaver is a local photographer.
I am SO GRATEFUL that she has been photographing our sports teams!
she’s super talented at it and of course she’s an excellent family photographer as well.
i pulled a few from her blog that had Sean in them.  🙂

16nov_hhsfb_state_174-427x284
16nov_hhsfb_state_71-427x284
sean is a lineman.
i can’t even tell you the actual position… no clue.
as the season progressed i started watching only sean every play.
i wouldn’t know where the ball was but i knew where sean was…. because i’m his mom!
he’s the only reason i am sitting out there in the first place.

fullsizerender-61fullsizerender-65
we had the weirdest wonderful weather this whole season.
usually we are freezing to death by now!
it didn’t even get chilly for the games until mid November.
it was really nice to not have to endure rain or ice or snow!
fullsizerender-66fullsizerender-53fullsizerender-70fullsizerender-56football
our team’s mascot is a Swather.
in case you don’t know what that is…. it’s that big red machine behind the boys.
yep.
our mascot is a tractor.
actually… it’s a piece of equipment that you attach to a tractor!
according to wikipedia: A swather is a farm implement that cuts hay or small grain crops and forms them into a windrow. “Swather” is predominantly the North American term for these machines.
our town has a large manufacturing company that makes those swathers.
GO SWATHERS!

img_8409img_8411penultimatefullsizerender-9fullsizerender-64
sean was interviewed for an area newspaper after a game.
#proudmom
img_2425
img_7124
these three pictures are all the sophomores on the team.
they have already changed so much since jr high and i’m sure that won’t stop soon.
i know we will see some great football in the next two years from these guys!
penultimatefullsizerender-8img_802016nov_hhsfb_1105_89-427x640img_8410img_8201img_8202penultimatefullsizerender-7
what a wild season!
we couldn’t be more proud of sean and his teammates.
we hope for more dancing from their coach next year.
(see my instagram here and here and here)

and since football season lasted so much longer than it usually does… they have their first basketball game on friday!
whaaaaaat?

no rest for the awesome.

🙂

Cassandra - No rest for the awesome, HA! love that! Great job Sean & team!!

Beth - I had no idea what a Swather was…and I’m married to a third generation John Deere salesman/dealer. Whoops. Well, now I know. Your blog is so educational. Ha!

Michelle from Australia - Thanks for pointing out what a Swather is and that the red tractor in the photo wasn’t a piece of machinery someone had forgot to put away! Well done to Sean and his team mates. And yes, how beautiful the weather in Kansas was in November. I certainly loved it not being cold when I visited.

Wendy C - Nothing better than watching your kids participating in any activity that they love – win or lose – although so much more fun when they win!

Lisa M. - Congratulations! That is such an accomplishment! My husband coaches for the local high school’s varsity football team and four years ago they made it to the final four in the state. That is a BIG deal around here. Our games went until the middle of December and it was the most exciting thing! And I didn’t even have a player on the team, just my husband as a coach! Our son and I went to every game and I can still remember the atmosphere of those games. Incredible. Thanks for sharing. This brought back some wonderful memories!

Southern Gal - Oh, that’s heartbreaking. Been there, done that, but great job! I love that your mascot is the Swather! I had no idea what that was. And Sean looks so much like his dad.

and speaking of eggs….
i bought this little Egg Cooker recently and WE LOVE IT!
we can have hard boiled eggs within minutes!
we have eggs for days with all these happy chickens and my kids love hard boiled eggs.
just fill the bottom of the cooker with a few tablespoons of water and turn it on.
and in a few minutes… hard boiled eggs!
easy, healthy breakfast or snack!
no pot watching.  no oven preheating.  no thinking.   it’s mindless.
and i like things like that!!
and it’s tiny and takes up very little space in your cabinet!

favorites from the internet | - […] Meg posted about this egg cooker. […]

Renee - Can I ask a rude question? How much do you spend on flowers each spring? I would love to recreate the impact you give, but have no idea what to expect financially. Do you shop around? Buy the cheapest? Or just splurge?

Kari - Your peonies are gorgeous! We have some in our yard, but they’re always covered in ants. Despite their beauty, I have to restrain from bringing them in because I’m afraid of bringing in a bunch of ants. How do you keep the ants off of them/get them off of them before you bring them in?

Tobi Layton - What a fun post! And, on a personal note, it brought back memories! I used to triple jump, long jump, and hurdle for the Swathers! It was fun seeing pictures of my alma mater!

Lynne - OMG I can’t believe that you have a pet named Waffles. We have a cat named Waffles because he waffles from good to evil at the drop of a hat. What kind of dog is Waffle? OH by the way your peonies are beautiful.

Rebekah Wales - I’m so glad I’m not the only one whose children like to recline on the kitchen counter. 😀

Andrea - I love it when you post random pictures!

Kimberlee Jost - The peonies with your Grandma’s cow…I have looked at that picture at least 10 times. Something is drawing me in. I want to live in that picture. Shop print?

Mary - Can you please tell me where you got your adorable frayed jeans. Love them!!!

Crystal D - We bought the egg cooker in November and it is amazing!! One of my favorite appliances. We’ve used it over 25 times and only once had an undercooked batch (I don’t think I used enough water). I cannot give it enough “5 stars”

Kathi - I also love your pictures! Could you blog about your chicken coop and how you tend to your chickens? We are considering chickens, neither of us has any chicken experience. Any tips?

Sarah - I love your photos. You inspire me to get behind the camera more often. Also, I’ve had the opportunity to get to know your friend Jana. She’s co-teaching one of my classes and she is so very lovely and insightful. 🙂

jamie - HAHA the waffle photo made me laugh out loud almost snort! can you imagine having that in your shop as a canvas??!? and HELLO with the egg cooker it’s now in my amazon cart where has that little thing been all my life. the COLORS of all your flowers are just so stunningly beautiful and happy. your photos inspire.

meg duerksen - Julie- the alarm is slightly obnoxious but it’s no big deal. We have always had perfectly cooked eggs! It’s totally a great appliance!

Julie Cross - So excited about the egg cooker but when I looked at the reviews on Amazon, people hated it. Do you think the alarm is annoying? Or that they undercook? Just thinking that they might have improved it since those yucky reviews. Thanks!

Lori - Love your photos! They are so bright and happy! Looks like a pretty good week to me 🙂

stephanie - I love all your pictures! The daisies and peonies especially. I just moved to Utah after living in the southern half of the US (desert and Gulf Coast) for my entire adult life. Can I just tell you how thrilled I am that I now get to grow peonies?! They are my favorite and won’t grow in the south. So now I’m in the club! lol

cathie w. - These ‘random’ tidbits of your life are some of my favorite posts!! Love all the color and thoughtful musings. Have a fabulous week!

Chris - I love when I come to your site and there’s a new post full of pictures. They inspire my morning. Love the bright pink peonies. We only have white, which are beautiful, but those pink…

there is crying in basketball (for the moms)

IMG_4863
well… it’s happened.
high school basketball season has ended and for scotty… it’s over forever.
cue the tears.
i have done well with not crying basically because i haven’t let myself even think of it.
because it makes me so sad when i do.
i love to watch him play.
i am his mama… i know him so well and i know that when he is playing basketball he is in his happiest place.
i know he can find that other places but for him this was a very special an important part of his life.
and it’s so darn sad that it is over.
IMG_4715IMG_4750IMG_4823IMG_4780
IMG_4790IMG_4751IMG_4731IMG_2679-2IMG_2683
we are SO PROUD of him.
he is an excellent athlete AND he does well in school AND he is a pretty funny guy among lots of other wonderful qualities.

this whole second kid finishing high school and going to college thing is even weirder than the first!
i have so many emotions about it and it’s only march!

i know i will be watching many MANY more years of basketball in our school’s gym but i can definitely say it will be bittersweet to not have scott out on the court too.

pass the kleenex.

i am a mess.

Carol S. - Bittersweet for sure. One thing I will say…my youngest was cut from the basketball team junior year (ouch!) but that adversity was important to experience and I saw so much growth come from him. He has gone on to play rec league and still gets together with many players at the gym for pickup games several times a week, and truly loves the game for fun. I bet Scott will find a way to get to his happy place on the court in college rec leagues and as an adult in gyms for many, many years. My youngest son just went out for the tennis team and is playing varsity tennis now, not an expert, but having fun playing and competing.

Lisa - I cannot imagine! This made me all sorts of anxious thinking about my kids moving on from sports and high school etc. Time stinks!

Genie - Oh mama, I totally know. Such a universal mama thing. Yes, please pass the tissue.

Debi Meyers - Wahhhhhhh…. Oh man I feel for you dear Meg.

Melanie Sidwell - Hugs mama! My heart is both happy and sad for you guys. It’s the end of an era! But an exciting new beginning for what’s next. My only kiddo is in 6th grade and a basketball player as well; I already seen the end on the horizon, and I know I will be a mess too. I try to remember the saying: Don’t be sad that it’s over, be happy that it even happened 🙂 small comfort I know but again, much hugs and Kleenex (and chocolate). xo

Tracy - I can relate! We are going through the same feelings in our house right now!! 🙁

kelly - I know what you are going through…but on a totally vain and personally note…love the shirt your are wearing in the last picture…can you share where you got it from!

Lori - So so bittersweet! So proud and excited that they are growing up and moving through different stages, yet so sad when each stage ends! My oldest of three turns 29 TODAY. The tears still come when I think of high school soccer and the boys’ ritual after the national anthem before every game, forming a huddle, jumping up and down, yelling. Memories are powerful–thankful God gave us that gift.

~kris - Was in your shoes this time last year when our Senior son(and last child at home)finished his final high school swim season. We had spent so many hours in that pool and he too in “his happy place” ~ he too was an excellent athlete, top notch student and well respected. This year has been a transition but knowing he’s in a new “happy place” and thriving at college is such a good thing for this mama.

Tobi Layton - My boys are just beginning basketball (2nd and 4th grade), but this made me sad because I know they’ll be where your kids are all too soon! It also brought back memories, because I graduated from Hesston! It’s great to see pictures of the good ol’ Swathers!

Dana Powell - Aww…so sorry, Meg. Being a mama truly is like having your heart (or little pieces of it) out and walking around on the earth! I get all sentimental over every little new stage/phase and my oldest is only 13. I will for sure be a basketcase when they’re close to graduating, too. 🙂

Terri Upton - My heart goes out to you. It is so bittersweet with our children growing up. And when they turn out to be great adults you as a mom still see them as those little tinys we held and loved on. Prayers for you and your family as the wind of change happens.

amy jupin - why am i crying too???
p.s. i’m crazy about these pics! so good!

february stuff

so if you weren’t sure what i have been doing… it’s still basketball season.
🙂
but it’s coming to an end in the next few weeks.
and honestly that breaks my heart.
i can’t imagine not watching my Scotty play on that court with his classmates.
i can’t not cry when i think of this stage ending.
it is going to be really hard to be done.
sigh.

annie’s team finished up their season recently.
they are so fun to watch and even to listen to in-between games.

IMG_1617IMG_1646IMG_1935
and talby is playing volleyball several days a week too.

it was a valentine’s success!

talby and annie got these funny Cat Face Pillows  for Valentines from me.
they loved them!
i absolutely recommend them if you know someone that likes cats.
they are silly but also really fun.
and they have Dog Face Pillows too!

beth larson - Morning Meg! Just have to say that your Lauren was the cutest little girl! So fun to see some of your favorite photos of her. Have a great day!

Andrea G. - Good stuff! Basketball season…helps get us all through long winters! 🙂

Lisa - Praying for your community. Can’t imagine having something like that hit so close to home. ❤️

Suzanne - Hoping all is well for you in Hesston after hearing about the shootings at Excel. Praying for Hesston.

tracy fisher - love love love reading your blog. hugs, tracy fisher (remember me? the girl with the beach house in Washington.. haha).

Tracy - My oldest just turned 20 so 21 is right around the corner…so hard to believe!

Has Scott decided where he will go to school next year? My senior boy is going to be a Jayhawk <3 So happy to have a Jayhawk because my oldest went to Mizzou! (I am a KU Jayhawk…cam you tell? Haha!)

Kathi - My baby turned 21 in December, I helped him make paper roses for his valentine. It’s bittersweet watching my boys grow up. It was good family time going to all the soccer games, track meets, and cross country meets, I still miss those times. I spy your barn door, I would love to see what you did with it:)

ordinary week

IMG_0920
my giant barn doors finally came inside this weekend!!
HOORAY!
i am in love with how they change the space.
i’ll show it when i have it styled the way i like (which could be a long time but i’ll try not to let it be)
i wanted them to be hung on the wall because i wanted them to go almost to the ceiling.
so we had to figure out HOW to do that.
and it only took two trips to the hardware store.
IMG_0938IMG_0612
cuddly brothers.IMG_0782-2
these guys are still here.
they are the world’s most boring pets… FYI.
and they creep me out.
i’m not “afraid” of them but they just gag me.

IMG_0627
the bathtub at the craft house is heavenly.
it’s worth driving 15 minutes to take a bath.
100%.

IMG_0656
talby had a volleyball tournament last weekend… those are crazy.
crazy loud.  crazy crowded.
but love watching her play and smile and be silly with her team & her brothers.

IMG_0833
and we had another week full of basketball games.
like… 9 games.
IMG_0844IMG_0902
funny guy.
🙂

IMG_0911
of out ALL our kiddos… i think annie may possibly love basketball the most.
which is fun to know we still have a lot of basketball in our future.
and that is serious.  i am not being sarcastic.
i love to watch them play!
(i also love to stay home and do nothing but we get to do that all summer)
IMG_0486
i love this 40’s house but i really do miss the chickens being out like when we at the farmhouse.

IMG_0610-2
last week was busy with scott, sean AND talby getting their driver’s licenses.
scott got his full license and the talby and sean got learner’s permits.
a learner’s permit means you can drive with any licensed driver over 21 in the passenger seat.
then at 16 (or after driver’s ed) they can get a restricted license that allows them to drive to work or school only.
it was a big week!
IMG_0509

FullSizeRender 80
i got to help make a meal for Scott & Sean’s basketball team last night.
i like those boys.
all of them.
and i am LOVING watching all their games this year.

IMG_0735
i did some art journaling (keeping with my 2016 goal of creating something each week)
🙂

.
i started reading this book… I Quit Sugar
on paper it seems so easy.
and logically it IS.
but it’s so much deeper than that isn’t it?!
FullSizeRender 81paleo
i thought both of these books looked interesting at B&N this weekend.
The Paleo Kitchen and Clean Eating with a Dirty Mind
they both had really great photos and everything looks SOOOO good to eat!

silly
and keeping with pure randomness… these 4 pics cracked me up this week.
1. i don’t answer my phone unless it’s my child.
2. i cut my boys hair and they don’t love it but don’t want to go GET a haircut either.
3. this sign needs to live in my laundry room
4. i would like 7 of these tank tops.  one for every day of the week.  ha ha haaaaa

.
and lastly…. craig and i went out on a date (that i begged for) on saturday night.
(begged is a strong word) (threatened… ? ha!)
we ran into Barnes & Noble & i was chatting with mr. duerksen, looked up & said “well hey! that’s my friend Jeanne!”
and sent her this grainy pic immediately.

Jeanne has TONS of classes on her site but there is one going on right now called LISTENING.
she asked over 20 men and women to share our thoughts on Listening – Finding the Quiet and hearing the voice of God.
and i am one of those women and i did make a video about my personal struggles and praises.
so come join this free class!!!
it started january 1 but it’s not too late to join at all…you can still see all the videos.

alright.
my house is empty today! my husband is off work and the kids are off school but no one is here!
i am making PW Dr. Pepper pork in the crockpot.
my husband has requested Bread Pudding for dessert (see??? deeper than the logical I Quit Sugar)
and i HOPE we get to watch a movie tonight as a family.
(but no doubt there will be a football or basketball game on that can’t possibly be missed…)
HA.

did you see The Martian?! we watched that on friday and LOVED it!

Cat Sasser - Please! I MUST know the name/brand of your toe nail polish in the bathtub pic! (It’s perfection!) 🙂

meg duerksen - Michelle- I don’t have that tank top. I saw it on Facebook but I bet if you google it you’d find a source.

Michelle - Where did you get the “Am I skinny yet” tank?

Jenny B. - Love your art journaling piece! My grandmother passed away at the beginning of January, and that was the hymn she had requested we sing at her service. <3

Love the barn door! How did you end up hanging it? French cleat? Have fun styling it! 🙂

meg duerksen - our walls are SeaShell Gray by Valspar.

meg duerksen - Shelly – i was just helping with the meal… but they served baked potatoes with chili and/or shredded pork as a topping. Not chili in bowls. and desserts. 🙂

Lisa - I just spent the weekend at a volleyball tournament with all 5 of my kids. It
IS loud and crazy. But so fun! I also need that laundry sign. Too funny! 😂

Andrea - we just watched the Martian… (it was really good and funny!)

Lisa D - OK – LOVE those doors! I grew up on a farm in SW Minnesota and I have a thing for barn doors!! 🙂
And….what color are you walls….almost a gray/white color??
Thank you for all of your wonderful posts – Lisa

Shelly - OK – what did you feed the team? I’m on my third team meal of the basketball season and I’m OUT.OF.IDEAS!!!!! Please help!! 😉

Kelly S - Read The Martian, then saw The Martian, and LOVED both!!!! (book was better, of course, but movie was fun and great). Excited to see The Revenant. I don’t know what revenant means? 🙂

Melanie - I was just thinking that my coffee habit is keeping me away from my goal weight, and how I would like to quit/reduce my sugar intake. You cannot out-exercise a bad diet, huh? le sigh. I’m with ya sister! Keep the faith, try try try again.

Michelle - My husband and I just watched The Martian last night and thought it was great! 🙂 Hope you have a good night with your family. I’m watching PW while my 3 month old naps….looking forward to the days of family movie night. We are in the throws of nursing and diapers! 🙂

Julie - Looking forward to seeing how you style those doors. We turned mine into my sewing table and another into my cutting and fabric storage table.

I have looked at going sugar free, but have decided that I am going to stick to the everything in moderation theory, besides I cannot afford all the nuts, fresh dates, cacao nibs etc you are meanto use instead in cooking and baking.
