basketball… it’s our fave.

scott had a basketball game last night…on valentine’s day.
so that was our hot Valentine’s date (and every other parent’s hot date) in that gym.
actually it was super warm in there so i guess it WAS a hot date if you think about it.

his team played the team from the town where craig and i grew up.
in the same gym where craig played in for YEARS growing up…and i cheered on the sidelines.
(GO TROJANS)
it was fun to be back and watch those boys play so hard. (our son? so weird… how did we get this old?)

scott’s team is undefeated so far this year…. it’s exciting!

the game was within a point for the last three minutes or so.
and then tied.
and then we won on a (literal) last second shot.
we found this video on varsitykansas.com.   i wish i had thought to take video.
we were at the other end of the court right near the basket so we had a great view of the shot and the team going CRAZY.
our team is the black team… fyi.

it was so much fun!

watching Scott focus on basketball and knowing how much he truly loves it is just… the best!
it’s so awesome to see your kid light up when they love something.
whatever that thing may be… reading, art, sports, animals, science, math – anything!

personally… i don’t care about the win – lose stuff.
i want that light.
i want to see a connection to something and that drive to “do your best” for no one else’s reasons but your own more than i think about the win or the stats.
those things usually come alongside anyway when that love and dedication is there.

so yeah… basketball is our favorite.
an understatement for my husband for sure.
what would be considered higher than “my favorite” ?
maybe… the ultimate?

whatever.
we love basketball.
(and volleyball.  and soccer.  and track.  and football to0)

the end.

Mindy - I fell in love with my husband watching him play high school basketball : ) I cheered for basketball too. After we got married he played city league for a number of years, then our daughter was a basketball cheerleader and now our daughter is the high school basketball cheer coach. So yeah, I love basketball too, the squeak of the shoes on the gym floor, the heat, the cheers – yep!

Heather S. - I hear ya! Our Valentine’s Day was spent at an all-day ballet competition watching our two daughters dance. Sometimes it’s more romantic to sit and watch what God has allowed you to create together in your marriage than to sit over a candlelit dinner.

Ashley - Hey we had the same Valentines…in the basketball stands 🙂

Lori - Some might read your post and think “too bad— not much of a Valentine’s Day”—— but I know that NOTHING beats watching your kids as they do what they love. Our three are grown (or almost–youngest is nineteen), and sometimes I miss those high school activities so much —-I tear up with memories when I hear The Star-Spangled Banner. Don’t get me wrong— my husband and I LOVE this season of freedom and fun, but I think you spent the most fitting VALENTINE’S DAY of all. Love you, Meg–

Lisa - Oh, the memories in that gym! I think it’s been at least 15 years since I’ve been back. And Coach Knoll is still there!

Rebecca W - THAT was awesome! Go team!

Mickie - Just shared that video with my 9 year old son who also loves basketball and thinks there is nothing better than a “buzzer beater” so he thought it was pretty awesome. Congrats!

Terrie - I read about that this morning and saw video on facebook!
Congrats to your son & team!
I remember our kids playing both teams…such fun rivalries.
I’m not so hung up on who wins or loses either…
It’s so much fun watching them! I miss it…
Believe it or not…they grow up way too fast and then this season of life is over.
Enjoy every minute!

back to normal.

the school bus was a very welcome site yesterday morning.
everyone was ready!

it was time for a regular routine.

IMG_8901
tuesday they played around in the deep deep snow we had on monday night.
the ditch was gone…it was just snow!
we stomped over to explore the neighbor's pond.
annie kept saying how tired she was because walking through deep snow like that was hard.
IMG_8919
they shook the snow off a tree which was pretty cool to see.

IMG_8923
look at how massive that tree is?!!

IMG_8898
it was up to the top of my boots!

IMG_8935
they spent quite awhile throwing snow chunks into the semi-frozen pond.
the pond was like a slushi…not frozen but kind of frozen.

IMG_8939
then we slowly stomped back home and got ready to go to Scott's ball game.

even though they didn't have school, they had a ball game.
the weather had cleared and it was the first round of the sub-state tournaments.
i was thrilled to have a place to go for the evening.

IMG_8962
Scott has been playing on the varsity team the past month or so and playing a lot in each game.
i have absolutely LOVED watching him.
i am super proud of him out on that court.

IMG_8969

IMG_8973

IMG_8978
his ankle made it just fine through out the game.
i was nervous for him.
he had 14 points in that game.
it is so fun to watch him and it's so weird to see how much he looks like his dad.

i am going to be bummed when the season ends.

but we have another game tonight so no reason to be bummed just yet.

NOW….

some things i meant to tell you about.

these girls wrote about Craft Weekend on their blogs and i forgot to share their links!

Shannan's post

Steph's post

Annnnnnd….did you do any shopping from all those coupons on the sponsor post a few back?
so many great discounts!
they are such wonderful companies.

Febspon

mama lola - great pics in the snow! your turquoise running legs are looking super svelte, way to go, mama!

tara - I’d love to sponsor your craft weekend. I don’t think we really talked about it when I sent you the sign for your gallery wall in your master bedroom…but if it’s something you’re open to, please let us know.
We could even send a custom small sign that the gals could fit in their bags…let me know what you think. 🙂
thanks!

Tiffini - we are about 2 hours from you and we had over 20″! craziness..:)
thankful for the snow for the farmers = helps drought but geesh so glad when spring arrives…xo

Jen - Had a very vivid, very weird dream that I was at the Duerksen house last night with you and your family.

Barbara - Those are some great pictures in the snow how I would love to have that just one day I don’t want to trade my California weather for anything.
I did take advantage of Lisa Leonard’s discount got some gold earnings, thanks so much!

Robin Canter - Ok, I seriously want to move to Kansas after reading Shannon and Steph’s posts about Craft Weekend. I could honestly be a helper at every one of them – just my kind of ‘ministry’! Can you possibly ‘franchise’ the craft house and weekends to Maryland? 🙂

Kayla - Does Scott ever notice you skulking around on the sidelines taking pictures of him? Those are such cool shots, but I just kept thinking my kids would notice me and be mad that I was on the sidelines drawing attention to them. My oldest is getting to that point where sometimes if I see him walk into a room out of the corner of my eye, he looks just like my hubby, Rainman. Scary.

Lina - Hi meg. Will you be selling some of your bunting in your etsy shop? Say yes pls.

beth davis - Hi Meg ~
I noticed (in one of the photographs from the ‘craft weekend’) that you had a little ‘shop’ set up. Is your ‘store’ open for business (etsy). I’ve been searching but haven’t had a lot of luck.
Thanks!
Beth

Seriously Sassy Mama - My daughters last bball game is this Saturday. I have had to miss all of them because I work weekends. It is ok though, because it is so much fun watching her give me a play by play.

happygirl - Your snow is so pristine white. That gal at this blog, http://itwasbroughtonbylove.blogspot.com/ has a recipe for “snow cream.” Your snow looks perfect for something like that. I’m not jealous, ’cause I hate shovelling, but that is some gorgeous snow. 🙂

Su@TheIntentionalHome - you gotta show your Scott and your hubby this basketball video. . it will make you cry. . my sister sent it to me this morning. It is only 2 min long. Here is the youtube link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1bIzYMXRfY&feature=youtu.be

Sonja - I used the coupon code for Ike & Co and got the earrings I’d been admiring since your pre-craft weekend instagram photo of them. It was a pre-order, so I have to wait another TWO WEEKS until I get my grubby little fingers on them. 🙂
My four-and-a-half year old son was reading over my shoulder – he loves your blog because he likes “aaaalllll those colorful, colorful crayons!” Hee, hee.

Kathy - can I just tell you how much I LOVe all the color in your home, your life and even in the winter clothing you and your family wear! woohoo for living a bright and beautiful life!!! =)

Alicia @ La Famille - love snow days…but i love normal more. glad you’re back to routine!

Grace Keith - The napkins that have the cameras on them are fantastic and would make a wonderful addition to our daughters HS graduation party as she is going off to college for photography. Can you share where they are from please?

hello… a week later.

hey.
remember when i used to blog everyday?

yeah… me too.

everyday i meant to write but just couldn't get to it.

there has just been a lot going on.

last weekend i brought my camera along for another day of basketball.
it started at the last day of the basketball clinic for kindergarten – 3rd grade.

IMG_1627-1

IMG_1629-2
craig runs the clinic with another former college basketball player.
it is pretty cute to watch all those kids bouncing basketballs all over the gym.
IMG_1638-3

IMG_1655-4
jump stop.

IMG_1664-5
bounce pass.

IMG_1699-6
dribble knock out.

IMG_1709-7

IMG_1717-8

IMG_1718-9

IMG_1732-10
annie LOVED the clinic.
talby and scott were helpers.
i really enjoy watching craig with the kids…. that guy sure does love basktball.

IMG_1770-11
we left annie's clinic and went straight to scott's afternoon tournament.
what is there not to love about high school basketball?
especially in a small town.
its one of my favoirte things to do.

IMG_1817-13
then we left that gym and drove to sean's tournament.
we watched two of his three games.
they won and sean played G R E A T!
it was fun with the crowd too… all the parents were cheering.
it was a long day of basketball but i honestly did enjoy it all.

IMG_1829-14

IMG_1833-15

talby plays too but this was a weekend she did not have games.

i really don't want the season to end.
it's always here too soon.

do your kids play sports?
what do they play?
do you love it or do you wish they like something else?

Kasey - Sounds like you guys were super busy! My 8 year old is playing basketball right now, but in a few weeks he will start baseball and soccer. and our 4 year old will start soccer in a few weeks too. My husband is a basketball coach so it has been crazy town around here! But we love it!

Sherry Stone - Hi Meg! Love your blog and can’t wait for my name to be called for Craft Weekend.
My oldest son plays freshman basketball and so does my 8 yr. old daughter. I’m always impressed with your GYM photos- not the easiest to capture. My son has always loved basketball. I agree, high school basketball is the best! Just last week he said
“mom, I don’t know what I’m gonna do now that the basketball season is over”….I replied, baseball starts next week so you will have that.
“baseball is just not the same. I would rather be on the court playing basketball getting yelled at by coach, than being on the baseball field being praised”………..
Sherry Stone
Crestwood, KY

Cris Marsh - We have 4 children and all played sports (every sport imaginable). I coached soccer, basketball, and softball so I could be there for every single minute of fun. Now we have grandkids and we are loving watching them play sports too!

Erin - My 7 year old is a swimmer year round. Basketballer in the winter. Baseballer in the Spring.
My 5 year old is a tae Kwandoer.
My 16 month old is a tag-a-longer. 🙂
Love kid sports!!!

Tracy Fisher - that’s how i feel watching my kids play baseball and lacrosse. i know they are only young for a short amount of time. i wish someone had told me that years ago… oh, they probably did…haha. but now it is so important to see all of these moments. you are a good mom meg duerksen! 🙂 -tracy

Lisa - I was going to say that seeing Craig doing the clinic reminded me of JAM basketball!!

Robyn B - I have one son who plays year-round basketball (11yrs) and another who plays year-round select soccer (14 yrs). The older is in middle school, so he also plays whatever school sport in in season – currently basketball. It makes for very hectic weekends, but I LOVE watching them play and wouldn’t want it any other way. I think my favorite sport to watch is basketball, followed closely by soccer (I’m sure it has nothing to do with the fact that it’s indoors, so no freezing, sweating, or being rained on 🙂 )
On another note, I’m “training” for my first 5K ever – I know it’s not that big of deal to most folks, but I’ve never been a runner. My older son is running with me – of course, he’s looking to win the “men’s” division, I’m just looking to finish and not die.

Ali - My kids are 5, 2, and 11 months and I pray everyday that each of them play sports.
🙂

Jessica K - I was on Craig’s JAM basketball team back in the day! 🙂 I loved growing up playing and being around basketball but my kids have yet to fall in love! Maybe one day!

Alice H - My daughter does cheer for football and basketball. My son plays football. And my baby (turning 3 this weekend) will be playing t-ball this spring. I love sports! Yes, life gets really busy with practices, games, etc, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. This is just a season.

Kara - We’re a huge basketball family – all the kids play (or have played) and my husband coaches. I love watching the games – good thing, right? I’m sad that my oldest is in college now and the days of watching him play are over…Enjoy it while you can!

Jen - Love the pictures, Meg. Thank you! My 8-year-old daughter plays softball and I help coach. I love that she loves to play. Both of our girls have tried soccer, but neither really enjoyed it. Our 5-year-old daughter really wants to try karate or gymnastics, and I think she’d be AWESOME at these, but I’m a fish out of water with these two. Need to do some research…Have a great day!

nora - The first few pictures, I thought we were looking at Talby … nope – it was Annie! Where has the time gone?!?! Anywho, love this post – I love basketball! The smell of the gym, the squeaks of the sneakers, and the fact that it’s INDOORS!

Becky P. - My kids are now 27 & 25 and I still miss Saturday’s in our small town at the YMCA watching them grow up playing basketball. Our youngest continued to play basketball until graduating from High School. That fall/winter after she graduated felt so different not having any sports to go to that we sought out friends and family that had kids or grandkids playing!

Carol S. - Nice to hear from you! I try to blog weekly and it’s too much for me, ha ha. It certainly is a job. If I could just write, I’d do it more, but pulling in the pictures is slow for me.
Looooove basketball and my son plays 8th grade. We just lost in disappointing first round of state playoffs, but experience was great. High school gets very competitive and he is working hard to be a player. We start AAU next for spring and summer, and that is lots of weekend tournaments which I love. Win or lose, we have fun escaping everyday responsibilities and focusing on the moment of the game. Had a varsity boys volleyball player who now plays Big 10 college club volleyball, can’t wait to see one of those games. Enjoy your week.

Sarah Wolfe - Our boys play baseball. But some of them are close enough in age to be on the same team, so usually we can get them on 3 teams. I love being at the ballpark. The little kids run around outside and play. We eat popcorn and chat as the boys play. My husband coaches and I love seeing him out there too 🙂 I’d love to do basketball, but we are not the tallest of families 🙂

Tami - Our family is a football family. Also music. So we get he best of both worlds. We love it all.

Roganne - I can not wait to have kids in organized sports! My two-year old is in mommy and me swimming lessons right now and we love it!

Alicia @ La Famille - i do love basketball. none of my kids play yet though. i remember those clinics and games like yesterday. so fun! such fun memories.

christy - Looks like a lot of fun! The little ones are so cute! How neat that Craig runs the clinic too.
My son plays soccer & I love it! Not a sport I ever tried, so I am learning more & more each season. He has played baseball, basketball & soccer & seems to like soccer the best.

Tiffany - Hey there! Don’t worry about not blogging every day. It’s fun to hear from you whenever it may be! Not sure what sports my kids will be into… Olivia has tried dance, gymnastics, and t-ball so far. T-ball is her fav, but she is only 5! It will be fun to see how they grow and develop in their interests and skills!

Stacey - All 3 of my kids play water polo and I had never seen a game before they started. I LOVE watching it now and I’m so proud of how far they’ve come in the sport. We live in Canada and we’re at the pool 5 nights a week with the different teams and I’m just happy that it’s in a warm pool and not a hockey arena!

Debbie S - Four kids = 3 soccer teams, 3 baseball teams, 4 on swim team, 1 gymnastics, 2 basketball teams and my husband coaches highschool baseball and 8th grade boys and girls middle school basketball. And through all of this, in the last three years I started running and have finished 1 half-marathon and 14 other races. So what I’m saying is, if I can find time to run, anyone can 🙂

Heather E - My son plays soccer and we love going to games and watching him grow in his athletic abilities. He and his dad play basketball in the driveway all the time so I am sure basketball will be in our future! 😉 And there is nothing better than watching fathers share and teach their kids about something they love.

Julie - I live in New Zealand, and my 9 year old son is in a school basketball team. They have games on a Friday afternoon after school is out throughout the year. I love it – the games are only 30 minutes long, inside so I don’t get wet and cold like I did when he played cricket and soccer on Saturday mornings. I still don’t get a Saturday sleep in – cos now he’s got guitar lessons at 8.30 am.

Sarah{Handbags*N*Pigtails} - One of our girls(7 yrs) has found her niche in gymnastics. She just had her first competition and was nervous the morning of. She asked me to pray with her to calm her nerves. We did and she ended up loving every minute of the competition.
Its such a blessing to watch your kids try new things and figure out life, isn’t it?

Seriously Sassy Mama - My 9 year old plays basketball and I love it. I played ball in high school, and I LOVE teacher her skills. My 7 year old is in gymnastics. I like it now, but I hope she chooses something different as she gets older. It is very expensive, and I do not have the discipline to have a gymnast. I do not want to be up at the gym every day. I your husband played or KU, I probably saw him play. I went to Texas Tech, and watched all the men’s games the 4 years I was there.

heidi c - Your weekends look just like mine! 🙂 except we only have one that plays basketball on saturdays, since our high schooler only play during the week. But, baseball lessons just started for the littlest one and my other son is taking about football. Yikes. But I love basketball the most. 🙂

Juli - I grew up outside Wichita, Kansas. One of my fondest memories was going to my big brother’s basketball games for Derby High School. My family always sat high up in the bleachers, where the little clerestory windows would fog up from the warm, sweaty air inside and the snow falling outside. To this day, the smell of sweat and the squeak of tennis shoes on hardwood takes me right back there, 50 years ago.

Nikki Gamon - My daughter was a 3 sport athlete from 5th grade through high school and ran track in college. I loved every minute but I don’t miss all the driving and I really don’t miss sitting on the bleachers!

Krista - Gosh your kids are getting big. I was looking at the clinic pictures thinking it was Talby and then realized it was ANNIE!! How did that happen??? Bless you for your patience and being such a good mom going from game to game to game!!!

Becky - My son played “Biddy Basketball” for the first time this year. We’ve always been a “wrestling family” – but I LOVED that he wanted to try something new this year with basketball. It was actually less of a time committment for our family – and he REALLY enjoyed it and improved every week! It was all very fun to watch. 🙂

IMG_7956-1

on saturday morning we hosted Lauren's volleyball team for brunch.
the seniors take turns hosting team meals and it was our turn.
lauren helped make the eggs, kimberlee cooked cinnamon rolls for me and we made it all work.

they were very polite and sweet.
it was a very enjoyable morning!

they all said goodbye and met up at their sub-state tournament.

they were pumped up and full of confidence.
i love to watch a team play like that.

IMG_8024-6
this was when they hit the last point to win the tournament.
so excited!

Flower Patch Farmgirl - She’s so gorge.

Kallie Brelsford - I remember those days! Going to state was such a great experience! Good luck to your daughter! Either way, it sounds like she had a great season!

Wendy - Awesome 🙂

Barbara (WA) - Of all the great things close to your heart in this post, what I noticed was your fabulous huge table!! Love it!

Jenn - Aw, I love those pics of Lauren and her team mates! Especially love the one with her sisters. Good Luck at State!!!

Rachel Reeves - Meg,
I reading this and all I can do is wonder what it is like to watch your little baby girl stand in front of you, pretty much a woman. I don’t know what that is like as a mother and look forward to it/dread it. How cool and also bittersweet it must be to look at Lauren and remember her as a small little girl and now she is just several footsteps away from being independent and on her own.
I would love to hear how that feels for you-as a mother-and how you deal with the wonderful joy and also the mothers heartache of watching your child grow up….
Oh-and congrats to her team! That is awesome!

Carol S. - Chills. So great. My son played varsity vball in Chicago area last four years, and is now playing club volleyball in college. So miss those games and hope to hit a college game soon. It’s all good, enjoy it and it’s okay when they keep going on. Lucky girl to have such talent and great memories. Good luck this weekend!!

amy jupin - i love seeing lauren on your blog.
she looks beautiful, and dare i say, even smiley in these pictures!
fun happy stuff.

Stephanie S. - Lauren is so beautiful! I’m happy for her team!

Valerie @ Chateau A La Mode - Awww congrats to Lauren. She looks so beautiful and happy! Can’t wait to see where her path leads her as she graduates next year. Keep us posted.

Lori Austin - Fantastic! Good luck at State!!

Lisa - That is such a big deal!!! Congratulations!!! Cant wait to
hear how they do. Ps. It MUST have been the breakfast you served! 😉

Trysha - Lauren has HOPS!! Dang! Congratulations. Good luck at State

Wendi - Wooo Hooo! I can’t believe she’s a senior 🙂

Heather - Go Lauren!!! I know you’re respecting her wishes by not blogging very much about her, but it’s great to see her here when she does pop up. I love her sparkly gold headband! 🙂

Wendi - Wooo Hooo! I can’t believe she’s a senior 🙂

Heather - Go Lauren!!! I know you’re respecting her wishes by not blogging very much about her, but it’s great to see her here when she does pop up. I love her sparkly gold headband! 🙂

Molly - wooohooo! coming from a small town in iowa i totally get how big of a deal this is!!!

Kimberlee Jost - yay, Lauren! So proud of you!

Tiffany - Oh wow! Good for her and her team! They look like a powerhouse! Have fun watching and cheering… excited to hear how they do!

Michelle from Vegas - Awesome! Good luck Lauren and teammates. By the way the gold hairbands rock!

Tracy Fisher - congrats! how fun is that?!!! -tracy

alicia @ la famille - yeah!! i get excited just reading. i LOVED playing bball. LOVED that feeling of a big win. so exciting! good luck, lauren!!

Carrie Lea - So awesome! Brought back memories for me! Good luck at state!
I guess it just registered to me where you lived. My granny (great grandma) lived in Lyons, my papaw grew up in Chase, and we made that drive at least twice a year, often more, I remember going through your town! She passed 15 years ago and I haven’t made that drive since then.

sarah j - goooooooooo lauren! xo

tonya - that’s awesome!!! your girl’s got some serious ups! good luck at state!

Dawn G - Exciting stuff! So many “lasts” senior year, but so many “firsts” to look forward to!

Chris - How exciting!! Good luck!!!

mollie d - My step daughter just won state softball in Missouri. I was amazed how into it we all were, it was so fun…and bittersweet, she’s a senior also. But all the students made the trek to cheer them on and they made it really special for the seniors.

roganne - that’s so awesome! congratulations and good luck at state! here’s to a win!

Sheila P. - Way to go Railers!! Congrats! Those Duerkson girls are gorgeous!

Jennifer Andersen - Wow! That’s a lot of tall girls! I thought your daughter was tall but the girls on her team are even taller!

Dani - Good luck! I want my daughter to play volleyball, but she only wants to sew…. which is ok too!

Emily - Growing IS bittersweet. Geez-that brought tears to my eyes for some reason. Good memories!!

Amanda - So fun! I went to a tour of the high school that day and watched the games for a bit. I didn’t stick around to see Lauren’s game but I saw you walking in as I was leaving.

Sharla - Brings back such wonderful memories – I love volleyball. Good luck at state!

Kate - I’m pretty sure it’s cause of the cinnamon rolls.

monday….you are alright.

well….we packed it in this weekend again.

our saturday was ridiculous becasue of sports but it keeps us together and busy.
and that's alright with me most of the time.
 IMG_6937-1

annie had a soccer game first.
she was a wild woman out there!

IMG_6944-2

IMG_6948-3

IMG_6959-4

then after annie's game we went across the street to Talby's soccer game.
it was pretty chilly….we were all wrapped up in blankets.

                              IMG_20120922_103103

IMG_6986-5

talby is on the far right….with all the legs.
her field was WAY bigger than annie's so it was hard to get a good picture.
so that's all i have.

then we got in the car, changed from shinguards to knee pads, drove 8 miles to talby's volleyball game.

IMG_7005-6

                                  IMG_20120922_112818

she did great!
she's been working on her serving and it showed.

then we went home and i vegged out for awhile on pinterest.
because…that's what you do when you are tired and feel like there is a lot going on…. right???
it's what i do.

we headed out to Lauren's volleyball tournament but we were early so we went to the thrift shop real quick.
SCORE!!!

IMG_7176-12
total price for both cute little quilts that will be perfect for soccer games…$2.50.

HA.
thanks mom for spotting them.

i drove through sonic because it was happy hour and….it was HAPPY HOUR.

IMG_7037-7
we went to Lauren's volleyball tournament.

had already played three games by this time but i was at the other kids' games.
so now we settled in for three more games.

IMG_7057-8

IMG_7066-9

it gets long waiting at games…

IMG_7078-10

                                    IMG_20120922_162622

IMG_7093-11

she played so well.
they are really fun to watch…so competitive.

we ate a late dinner outside and it was COLD.
fall has definitely arrived in kansas.
and i love it….jeans and cardis are my favorite to wear so this week is perfect weather.

since it was cold we made a campfire by the barn.

my mom was visiting.
and waffle is so good when he wants your food.
sits like a gentlemen…waits so nicely.

IMG_7114-3

we called out "bed time!" and headed to the house.
the girls had to do a few tricks on the trampoline quickly (stalling bedtime)
trampoline jumping at night is awesome with flash photography.  :)

IMG_7122-4

and that was our saturday.

filled to the brim.

                                    IMG_20120924_091311

i got a great run in this morning…we even had a tagalong CUTE baby in a stroller.
she never made a peep.
it's so fun when all the girls are there.
it's been a month since we have all been together!
crazy.

so…what about you?
how did your weekend go?

please tell me you at least got to do ONE thing fun that was just for you.

🙂

Sarah - I love how that baby is looking at you in that last pic! So cute. You have the same kind of weekends we have here…I am ready for a breather!

Jeannine - I spent as long as I could cuddling my 6 week old daughter.
When my husband wasn’t stealing her for cuddles of his own, that is 🙂

Jen - Love your weekend photos, Meg. Looks like fun! Here in OH we…watched our 5-year-old daughter score her first soccer goal!, flew kites, took our dog for a long walk, sidewalk chalked it up, went to church, and RELAXED. I was exhausted two Sunday nights in a row and I MADE myself slow down this weekend and it worked. I have more energy so far this week. I actually laid down and rested for an hour on Sat. afternoon. Ahhh…
Pinterest – yes. I made a new recipe last night from Pinterest. A yummy pork recipe.

Alice H - We were busy with football games and friends being over at the house. BUT I did sneak out Sunday morning when my baby, ok 2.5 year old, was napping and I went and saw Trouble with the Curve all by myself!! I cried. Great movie. Then Sunday I took all 3 of my kids to Ray Harrell Nature Park so we could be outside in the amazing weather. Then we went to dinner and then to another park to play. It is so funny when my older 2, Emilee 13 and Zackary 11, enjoy playing at the park with Colton, my 2.5 year old.

Jenny wells - Well I learned a VERY hard lesson on my way to work about stray kittens and warm engines….always check your car!! My day turned around despite having to work because I am a NICU RN and got to be in the delivery room and “catch ” a baby during a quad delivery. Pretty exciting and little baby “a” is doing just fine so it sure made
My kitten nightmare on te way there a lot better!!

Flower Patch Farmgirl - I want to jump inside that farmhouse and stay a while.
Our weekend? We kept a tiny baby overnight on Saturday, then returned her home Sunday and picked up two tiny baby TWINS. Baby Mania.

Lisa - Your oldest has hops! 🙂
That first picture of Annie’s face is
awesome!
We had our 5 yr olds soccer game
on Saturday… Nothing cuter then
a bunch of 5 yr olds playing soccer!
And our 9 yr old’s first flag football
game.
We have 4 kids and I am just
starting to see how busy we will be
once they all have practices and games.

Michelle From Australia - I finished researching the last of our USA trip accommodation and booked it in. Lake Tahoe, Monterey, Cambria and Santa Monica. All done and dusted. Maybe I can work in Kansas on our next trip?

Valerie @ Chateau Ala Mode - Your busy weekends bring back memories to me. Mine aren’t as filled up as they used to be anymore as my kids are getting to be young adults. There’s good and bad to that. I did get to spend my whole Sunday afternoon and evening watching the red carpet arrivals for the Emmy Awards…that’s my thing. Watching all the glamour and prettiness. Wishing I had a beautiful dress to where somewhere 😉 Have a great week.

Tiffany - I love those quilts! My Grandmas made block quilts like that often, and we still have several of them. Made from fabric from clothing my grandparents had. (In the time of not wanting to waste a thing.) It’s fun to think of the stories those blankets hold. As for one thing for me this weekend… I watched the latest episode of Project Runway after the kids were in bed Friday night. 🙂

Tracy Fisher - i had something removed from the back of my leg… alone…. in a dr’s office… laying on my tummy… waiting patiently for the dr. to come in… i almost fell asleep. haha…i will take alone time wherever i can get it… pathetic?… sure…. but that’s a mom for you :). tracy

sue - My Hubby and i brewed beer all week end. It was fun .

Kristin S - I just re-read my comment and it sounds really snarky and sassy. That isn’t how I intended at all!
I love all your family fun/sports/hang out/real life stuff. Makes me thankful for all my friends growing up and a bit sad I didn’t get a brother until I was 16.

Kristin S - Whew, I’m exhausted from reading that. 🙂 My mom needs to call and thank me for not being involved in sports past 6th grade.
Random: I seriously think you would have to pay me $1million to put on those volleyball shorts.

Tanya - We went to a small town Fall fair and had so much fun 🙂
Then we happened upon a crazy country bargain store where I scored a ton of giant Fall mums and pumpkins for really cheap! So happy!
Sunday night family dinner was at my mom’s and we ordered Chinese food.
Great weekend.

Loni - Busy busy! Glad I’m not alone. I did escape to enjoy a pedi with a fried.

Donna - The night time stuff looks like fun! You made me miss volleyball! I used to play in high school, one sport I was pretty good at! 🙂 It looks like they kicked butt!

Jenny B. - Oh, my goodness! So many games!! I can’t imagine. Talby is playing soccer AND volleyball?? No wonder she has Wonder Woman legs. You go, girl! 🙂
My weekend was quite the opposite of yours. My husband and I went to a B&B in Branson while our boys spent the weekend with grandparents. I hit all the flea markets in the old downtown area while he sat on a bench and read his library book. The weather was perfect, and we agreed it was an ideal afternoon for both of us. I found two globes and a vintage Fisher-Price Little People school house! Yay! FUN.
LOVE your thrift store quilts. I have an old quilt top that I need to figure out how to turn into a quilt. HA. 🙂

Chris - Hi Meg! I’m wondering what kind of lense you use on your camera. Thanks!!

J - We love bonfires at this time of year! Waffle looks like such a fun dog. I’d like to have a goldendoodle. My daughter, little granddaughter and I went to a nearby state park on Saturday. The leaves were gorgeous, we had fun being together and shared lots of laughter.

Julie - Let’s see we had varsity football Friday night where the senior and the freshman played side by side! So proud! And we they played so well and almost beat the #1 team in the state.
Saturday was a lot of waiting around for my husband to get home so I could run to Wichita by myself. Went to Penny’s and got some amazing deals for all the boys, including the husband. Didn’t even look at clothes for myself. Went to Dillon’s to pick up food for 18 yr old’s birthday dinner tomorrow night. I did stop at Sonic on my way home for a cherry lime Coke just for me! Rushed home to make supper.
Sunday was church, lunch out and then a nap while husband and oldest worked ground and drilled wheat.

Jenna@CallHerHappy - holy moly! that is a weekend 🙂 i got a nice looooong nap this weekend while hubs watched the babe. we’ve got another one cooking now, so i need sleep when i can get it!

Rach - Could you please (in your spare time) box up some of your lovely cold weather and the store that prices such beautiful quilts for such reasonable prices. We could use more of both of those out here in LA LA Land.
Thanks. 🙂

Cheryl E. - Ok, I’m so jealous (in a good way) of the $2.50 quilts! That’s just craziness!
Wish my weekend was a little more exciting. Husband was out of town (AGAIN) and all I did was run errands, clean and stop kids from bickering!

Debbie S. - Early? What does that even mean?! I don’t think we’ve ever been early to anything since we’ve had kids…definitely not early enough to have to kill time shopping 🙂 I’m impressed!!!

elisa - My family loves Waffle. It’s such a thrill to watch kids improve their game isn’t it?

Kate - So glad you had a great weekend! Those quilts are a HUGE score!

Momma of 4 - Your weekend sounds miserable! I am sorry if that sounds rude. I am admittedly not a Sports Momma. My son did soccer one year and it felt like we were at practices & games non-stop. He got the trophy & I swore- never again. I joked that I should’ve gotten the trophy for all of the running I did to get him there! HA! 😉 Guess my kids won’t be getting any sports scholarships! I used to be really busy at certain times of the year with my oldest really involved in musicals, the theatre and dance. I miss it sometimes but I’m really glad my husband pointed out what a hamster wheel we were on. This weekend, it was nice here, in the mid 70’s. We went to a drive-in theatre and saw “The Odd Life of Timothy Green”-awesome movie. Saturday morning, I went consignment shopping with my girlies and then we went to visit Grandpa and made him homemade chili. Sunday, we went to church and a Fall Festival. Nothing specifically for myself but lots of family stuff. Ours seemed non-stop, too.

jackie grandy - BTW, the Waffle updates crack me up and always bring a smile to my face.

jackie grandy - Hi Meg! I always love reading the weekend recaps. Weekends are crazy in our house as well with back to back soccer games, dance classes, birthday parties, it gets so exhausting. I was so exhausted from the chaos of last week that I actually fell asleep on the couch Friday evening at 7:45. How lame am I? I did do something for myself this weekend. I felt like I needed to get out and connect with nature, so I went on an amazing run in the redwoods, and it was blissful! Happy Monday!
xoxo,
Jackie

Lisa M. - You are busy…not that you don’t know that, right? 🙂 Unlike summer, our fall weekends seem to not be as busy. It’s our weeknights that are CRAZY!! But truthfully, I’d rather have that and be able to hang out on the weekends. I’ll savor that now, cuz I’m sure it’s just a phase 🙂 Love that you’re still running! I need to get my butt out there. Tonight. I’ve already decided tonight. I just wish I had a running partner like I do a lifting partner. It’s so much better when I’m held accountable.
Great post! I always look forward to reading them. Thanks for sharing!

Lee Ann - That makes me tired just reading it! 🙂 I ran a 10k with friends. Running with friends is so much better than running alone. I have a half marathon coming up – with friends. I keep waiting for you to do a half! You can do it!!!! Seriously! I’ve never come close to running 100 miles in a month! If you can do that you can run a half. Go Meg Go!!!! 🙂

roganne - gracious you are busy!! how do you schedule all of those events and keep everything organized? i can hardly remember what i went to the grocery store for! you are super mom!

Maria - craziness here too…3 soccer games and party planning madness for sunday’s pool party extravaganza…whew…i was ready for monday…but the weekend went by way too fast…boo.
as for time for myself…nada this weekend, but I did get in a nap or two, so I guess that counts right? maybe a manicure later this week will make up for it?

Jennifer - You really scored on those baby quilts from the thrift store…love them! We had a really nice and relaxing weekend. My in-laws traveled down to stay with us–it was so nice to have them in town for a visit. They were excited to meet our new little foster baby boy for the first time.
And, let’s see… I did treat myself to a salted caramel hot chocolate from Starbucks last week…yippee!
I love Fall weekends…already looking forward to next weekend. 😉
blessings,
jennifer

Sarah - love that lauren has her volleyball jersey tucked in- you don’t see a whole lot of modesty in volleyball these days. we spent our saturday relaxing (i didn’t even get dressed til noon!!)

Susan - We had a quiet weekend. A friend slept over Friday night and we hung out most of the day on Saturday. I am so jealous of your cold weather! Right now it’s 94 degrees here in Fort Worth, TX. My daughter would love to do volley ball but she’s 12 years old and 4’6″ and I’m afraid she’s a little short! All the girls who played volley ball when I was young were tall…maybe that’s a myth!

Whitney - This weekend was amazing for me! We got some great family time and that’s the best times! The weather has been absolutly perfect here!

seriously sassy mama - I work every weekend so I can be home with my girls. My time to myself is when I am driving to and from work.

happygirl - You are a busy mama. I can’t even imagine how you do all you do. Welcome to Monday. 🙂

janet @ ordinary mom - Wow! And I feel like two kids is enough when we do back to back jiu jitsu and dance on Mondays. You have a busy bunch.
I have been going through my pinterest pins and making a list of doable ideas for the next while. I want to do 1 thing a week if I can.
Here’s hoping. 🙂
Happy Monday.

basketball on a sunday.

IMG_1327-1
at least once a month….usually more….scott spends his weekends at basketball tournaments on various teams.
i can't always make it to his games because he is not the only kid in our family.
but sometimes it works out for all of us to go together.

IMG_1344-3

IMG_1333-2

the three youngest play their 3DS video games against each other for most of the time.
or run around the gym.
or draw.
or play angry birds.

i sit right next to craig and relax.
i really do enjoy our time together watching scott.

and watching mr. duerksen watch scott.

IMG_1351-4

we finally got to eat at a place craig had been talking about for months.
he gets to go there for lunch at work but we never have gotten to come along.

IMG_1387-14 IMG_1386-13

IMG_1352-5

the Benton, Kansas Airport has a restaurant on the strip!
so you can watch the little planes take off and land while you eat.
it's really cool.

and it was a GORGEOUS day for it.

IMG_1367-8

sometimes we let them play while we wait for food….if we are feeling nice (or tired)

IMG_1378-1

IMG_1371-9
i got a salad and sweet potatoe fries.

IMG_1358-6
could be a new favorite photo of scott.

IMG_1373-10
annie was sure she could reach the top….just sure.

IMG_1381-11
sometimes….big brothers are awesome.
🙂

IMG_1364-7

i loved this place.
i hope we go back…i bet at sunset it's amazing.

IMG_1426-16
back to the gym.

IMG_1432-17

just another nice family day.

he "graduates" from eighth grade tonight.
man…. growing up is just fast.
it feels so quick…he is not that old?!
wasn't he just begging to look for tow trucks?
didn't he just learn to read?
doesn't he want to wrestle with dad?

ok….shutting down.
i don't have time to cry today so i am turning it off.

i showed a peek of my painted floor on instagram….it's pretty fun!!!
but i left my phone at home today on accident and i am at the craft house so i can't show you a picture here.
i guess that means you'll have to get on instagram.
🙂
because you should be anyway because it's a very fun little place to be.
i was worried it would be hard to figure out…..um…yeah…it's not.
super easy.
and addictive…..

Angie - Very glad you got to enjoy a game. My daughter is going into 8th grade this year and I LOVE watching her play sports. It makes me so proud. What an absolutely cute little place to eat. How fun is it that you can watch the planes? I’d love to take my boy somewhere like that!
Hope you all have a great Memorial Day Weekend friend!

Sandy - I still can’t figure out instagram. 🙁 But I’m with you…I love that picture of Scott. I miss Lauren. Did she go to prom this year?

Brandie Leep - Yep. Living in Benton is great! Love Stearman! glad your family enjoyed it!

Kirsten J - Excellent pictures!!! My big boy wore size 12 shoes in 9th grade, and now is 12 1/2 or 13. And I can’t believe I *ahem* pushed him out…*ahem* as Laura says. Bahhh!!!
Good for you for sleuthing out the clever restaurant, because SubWay gets old. We have a girlie who plays on a traveling tournament softball team. And I’m searching out out of the ordinary spots in Roseville California for the first of August….get ready, Mama, it’s only just beginning!

Lisa - Scott looks like a great player! And I am totally addicted to Instagram….

Annette - Stearman’s is a favorite for our family too! Sometimes we sneak up there when kids are in school for a lunch date! Teehee!

Lauryn - My husband is a freelance pilot and flight instructor. There are lots of smaller airports with restaurants alongside or at the end of the runway 🙂 The part I love the most is the parking lot for airplanes! We’ve done a couple “$100 Hamburger Run” — pilots have to keep “currency” (meaning X number of take offs and landings and night flights in a given period of time). When they need to get some useless flights in nearing the end of their currency period, they’ll fly somewhere for lunch or dinner. While the food might be cheap, they call it the “$100 Hamburger Run” because of the price of the plane and fuel 🙂 Isn’t it cute?!? I wish we were close enough to visit that airport restaurant. It looks so quaint.

Ashley - Aaaw! I’m struggling to figure out how to corral a one year old at my oldest’s swim practice. Even so, the moments are precious. You showed all the sweetness!
Have you seen travel sized Paris online? It made me think of you and the youngers. Google it sometime. I’m making one for the boys.

alyssa - yeah, but I don’t have an iphone. I realize I am about the only person on the planet, but I don’t have one. so now I just feel left out!

Seriously Sassy Mama - I loved when my parents came to my games back in the day. I cannot wait to do it with my girls.

ko. s - What a fun family day! I’m loving your Instagram pics by the way! The floors look amazing 🙂

Liz - What is your instagram username? I’d love to follow you, if that’s ok!

happygirl - Family days are fun. This restaurant looked fun, too. It is so sweet to see your children be together. My son is an only child. I think, he thinks, he got TOO much of mom’s attention.

Megan - I LOVE Stearman’s! The food is great and the atmosphere is even better. It is awesome at sunset. 🙂

April R - I know in my head that I’m not the only mama looking at her little boy thinking,
“When did that happen?!”
but it’s so much better when I hear other mom’s say it too 🙂
And yeah! for big brothers! 🙂

Brady Wilhelm - You made it to my hometown!! I graduated from Circle and now I live right by the Benton airport. We love it. We get to sit on our porch every evening and watch the planes take off. My one year old always starts clapping and laughing when he sees them. And we LOOOOVE Stearman restaurant. So delicious and you can’t beat the atmosphere. You and your husband should take a date night some weekend and go see some of the bands that play there 🙂 It’s a lot of fun. Hope you enjoyed my town!

Laura Phelps - oh THANK GOD for you…and for showing me that I am not the only mom who doesn’t make all of Jack’s games because “he is not my only kid”
and for showing me that when I do drag the others along, they are not the only kids who never watch the game, but run around the gym or have their noses in electronics
and that airport cafe?
my dad would love it!
did you know my dad flies a plane?
and i love sweet potato fries
so we would all be happy!

shannon - Looks like the perfect spot to eat especially for the whole family to enjoy! I just got on instagram(don’t worry I am of course following you) and it is ridiculous how much fun it is taking pics all the time and sharing 🙂
My instagram name is @shancarbajal

Tanya H - lol, love your ending. It might be the time of year because the shot of Sean holding Annie up to reach it made me cry. 😛 darn mommy-hearts. lol!

denise@victory rd. - watching planes take off and land while eating sweet potato fries! now, that sounds delicious.

angela - My boys did those weekend traveling ball teams…baseball, basketball, etc. It was a wonderful, expensive, tiring, family banding time…..and I wouldn’t go back and change it for the world!

Dani - I love that your family can try different restaurants! With all the allergies my daughter has we are pretty much stuck with only a few. That place looks so much fun. I bet my 3 year old would love it!
Yeah… our kids grow up so fast, but I try hard not to get too upset, because I will always have the memories!
Enjoy your day!!

Jennifer - I love instagram! What a cool restaurant. Is there a way to check to see if my name is still on the CW list? I just want to make sure I didn’t miss an email and now I’m not on the list.

saturday in smaaaaall town kansas.

IMG_8096-1

we packed up and traveled to Little River, KS. for scott's basketball tournament this past saturday.
Little River has a population of about 500.

that is really s m a l l.

they lost their first game.
bummer.
IMG_8124-1

we hit their main street to find some lunch.
there were two options….a bar called Fat Boys or the grocery store.
with our time frame between games we had to choose the grocery store.

IMG_8126-1

this picture made me smile.
it was just funny.

right next to where to talby is sitting….
IMG_8132-2
 whaaa???

IMG_8136-4

and this?  hmmmm…..

my kids' favortie part of this little store was this:
IMG_8134-3

IMG_8140-6

so we had sandwiches made from the deli at Heavenly Meats & Groceries.
and they made pizza too.
annie was full of loud and silly questions for the man running the meat counter.
he let her come and see where they make the pizza.
then she was full of even more questions!

IMG_8138-5

you won't see this very often….me drinking pop. (do you call it pop or soda or coke?)
i used to drink pop all day everyday.
but realized about 8 years ago that it made my stomach a mess so i quit.
i have MAYBE two a year.
and i usually have a 1/4 of the can and i have had enough…i start to feel sick.
i don't miss it at all.

IMG_8148-2
we headed to another gym in Windom, Kansas.
population in windom is 130.
isn't that crazy?
130 people?

they won this game.  (it's a tournament of other kansas teams….not a windom team)

IMG_8184-8

we played at the school playground in between game 2 and 3.

IMG_8164-7

it was hot and windy.
but i love that sunshine for march!

IMG_8217-11

IMG_8189-9

talby shared her iPod with annie and her friend Nash.
they were watching UP.

scott's team won their final game.
they got second in the tournament.
a successful day i think….and pretty fun for the rest of us too.

craig was teasing scott a little that he couldn't touch the rim yet….maybe someday….
so scott HAD to prove he could grab it after the game.

IMG_8214-10

the strength shoes and hours and HOURS of practice are paying off.
he is getting there….he'll grow a few more inches and he'll be dunking….he hopes.
i love his dedication.
i am so proud of that kid.

i never thought i would like spending a day at a basketball tournement for 13 year old boys with 3 other kids along…..but it turns out they are some of my favorite saturdays.
i like being all together and watching scott in his element.

ok….gotta get moving on my first day of spring break.
keep giving ideas on the post under this one.
i like the garden planning idea!
that is exciting!

have a great day today!

mandi@herbanhomestead - I know this is an older post, but I had to comment! That “slap yo mama” rub. My dad is from Louisiana so I’m very familiar with this phrase. In sentence form (ahem): “This cornbread is so good makes you wanna slap yo mama!”. So there you go!

Karen Huber - This cracked me up… my mom grew up (and my granny still lives) in s.m.a.l.l. town Kansas, as in 100 or so people, as in one stop sign. I admire your ability to craft an eventful (with beautiful pics) blog post out of such towns! 🙂

Heidi Jo the Artist - I love exploring new towns, looks like you guys had fun! We call it soda because my husband grew up on the east coast. Everyone around us here in Iowa calls it pop, ha ha!

Maranda - I am from that tiny little town called Little River!! Yay! I loved growing up there. And yes, do try Fat Boyz next time you are in town!! 🙂

Natalie - Any tips on giving up the soda habit? I have tried several times and haven’t been truly successful yet.

Randi-Dukes and Duchesses - I just love reading your posts. I have a basketball player who reminds me so much of your son (they’re almost the same age) … he lives and breathes the game and is constantly training to be better.
But I just had to comment to tell you what a great mom you are. You spend so much time doing art with your kids, baking with them, and just giving of yourself. It’s inspiring.

Katie H - Love this post. I grew up watching my older brother play in gyms all over Kansas. Like your son, he eat-breathed-sleeped the game. He eventually was a walk-on for KU, then director of operations for the team, and he now coaches at Baker University and couldn’t be happier….but your post made me smile thinking of all those hot, sweaty gyms and car rides we made as a family. Good stuff!!

Beth - In Alabama we call it Coke. No matter if it’s Coke, Sprite, Diet Dr. Pepper. Wonder why we do that? Funny. But everyone knows when you say, “I need a Coke” it means a canned drink.

Sarah Wolfe - No diet coke for 8 years. Impressive 🙂 That grocery store is hilarious. I like it when the town is so small that the gas station is a hang out and restaurant (that actually has good food) and a grocery store.

Marianne - I’m in Canada- it’s definitely pop. Soda just sounds weird. 🙂

Faith Buss - OK, that Slap Yo’ Mama stuff is soooo good! I got some at a Piggly Wiggly in Louisiana (I’m in OK) because I thought it was funny. We put it on oven fries and everyone goes CRAZY! 🙂 Fun post!

Wendy C - I heart small towns and basketball! Sounds like a fun weekend!

Megan - It’s too bad you didn’t have time for Fat Boys! We’ve actually made the hour trip to eat there — really good steaks!

Maria - I’ve seen the “slap yo mama” around here…never tried it though. It is supposed to be good though. They have crazy things here in the South.
I grew up calling it ‘pop’, until college, and my northern friend/roommate influenced me into calling it soda. Still do.
Our spring break isn’t until the first week of April…two weeks to go! The boys usually spend it gaming or playing outside (they never play on the computer/Wii unless its the weekend). I’m sure it will be pretty low key around here…although I am thinking we may need a little road trip somewhere during that time…
Enjoy your break!

Celia - We live in North FL and totally have that Butt Rub around here! Trust me….. try it on chicken, beef…. even sprinkle it in your scrambled eggs….. awesome! HA

Debby - Al’s sister lives in Little River! We’ve eaten at Fat Boys too. It’s a great town. Al grew up in Pretty Prairie, population 500.

Prairie Jenn - I love small town life! Yes, there are things about it that make me laugh, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Loved your photos! And we call everything a coke here:)

Sara Torbett - So sadly I’ve totally seen the “Butt Rub” for barbecue at our local meat market and recognized it right away-lol :). Fun weekend! I can’t believe you only have two sodas a year! Whaaat?! I wish I could say the same. I love Diet coke, and sonic vanilla diet cokes. So what do you drink at Sonic? (when not ordering water)

mollie's mom - I live in Atlanta – small towns like that seem amazing to me!!! Awesome , just hard to imagine 🙂
We call it “Coke” because, obviously, we live in Atlanta – haha!!
And I have to comment on the butt rub t-shirt because I am from Charleston, SC and when we go to Carolina beach towns we shop at my favorite – The Piggly Wiggly- and my daughter has multiple “I’m Big on the Pig” t-shirts. Everyone just calls it “goin’ to the Pig”, not grocery shopping and it is fine for 5′ tall size 2 college girls to wear “I’m Big on the Pig” t’s but I’m not sure I need that blazened across my back. But I do love to shop at the Pig!!!

the whyte house - first off, good job, scott!
second, i lived in canton, ks..the high school is a combination of towns(canton-galva hs), where my sister graduated w 30 people. lol. my parents are still in canton, i lasted 7 mos before i had to move back to wichita. it was just too ridiculous. downtown canton had a restaurant that was only open on sunday, a grocery store and a bar. we’d go to the casey’s to get a pizza. that was the big thing to do in canton. ugh. if i had to live in a small town, i’d go to hesston. it’s not canton and it’s not wichita. just right. 🙂

Michelle From Australia - We call pop ‘soft drink’. Who knows why?

Teresa - Perhaps you have a future Jayhawk on your hands!!
I live in the South, but grew up in the Midwest. I get called out EVERY SINGLE TIME I say pop.

Krissy - I have ALWAYS called pop, pop. I think it’s a Kansas thing. Being in the Navy, there’s so many people from so many places, and I havent found too many that call it “pop” My spring breaks were always spent outside (if it wasnt too cold)

charity palmer - absolutely love your blog! thought you might love these leggings my lil girl wore the other day:

I share your same love for color! 🙂

kaylee@life chasers - This just really made me smile. We live in one of those smaaaaalllll towns and I’m pretty sure they all carry that same, hilarious charm. The school gyms even look identical. A perfect way to spend a Saturday 🙂

Katie - I let the kids make a list of the things they wanted to do – kind of what you do for summer. It was great trying to read what they wrote (1st/kinder).
Tea Party
Math
Visit our cousins
Sleep over 1 night at grandparents
Ride our bikes (pretty unusual for March in MN)
Parks
Maybe your kids are too old. Hope it sparks at least one idea.

the.mrs - LOVE basketball! Hoping one of my girls will decide to take it up. 🙂
Love the pop! You’re lucky it makes you sick.. it can’t tempt you that way! 😉 I’m from MN and we call it pop, but I was really confused when I visited TX b/c they kept asking me what kind of Coke I wanted… I wanted Dr. Pepper Coke? hahaha

Roganne - The necklace is to die for! Kudos to you for not drinking any pop…I totally wish I could kick the habit!

Jen Brandt - Most of us in Ohio call is pop, and good for you for not drinking it very often!!! Think of how much skinnier you are and how much healthier you are for not drinking it. You go girl! 🙂

Lori H - Yes, do tell about the necklace! I love it. I do not love soda, however. Once in a long while I will have part of a Coke Zero. Or use a Sierra Mist to make an adult bev. 🙂

Rochelle - OK, I wasn’t going to comment but now I have to! Those “Hot Mamas” are made by an awesome company in my neck of the woods: Beaverton, Oregon. The company, Reser’s, makes THE best salsa, burritos, taquitos, potato salad, etc. I’ve never had the Hot Mamas, but I bet they’re pretty tasty. It’s a great local company that supports the community’s kids sports and agricultural endeavors. I bet if you approached them for Craft Weekend “swag” snacks, they’d come through.
Love your blog! And your necklace!!

Katie Skiff - Fun weekend… looked like ours. Basketball in small town MT, but the town had a few more residents. LOL… Love the t-shirt, my husband bought some of that rub, I wrote his name on it, so now it says Greg’s Butt Rub. 😛 I also don’t drink POP anymore, it tastes nasty to me.

megan@contentedsparrow - 1. that “meat-like” product in a jar: SICKKKKKKKK!
2. butt rub: {snicker}
3. pop, definitely

Alisa - we call ’em soft drinks:)

Gale Wall - I’m laughing because I don’t live far from those places. And butt rub is good stuff, people 🙂

Mandi Humphrey - Oh my…did you get any Butt Rub? It is so good! Can’t make it through summer grilling without it!

Seriously Sassy Mama - I selfishly would like seeing pictures of your new home!

Jolene (Homespun Heritage) - In the Midwest its called Pop…then I moved to the East Coast and they laughed at me ’cause they’re all hip and call it Soda. I moved back to the Midwest and still call it Soda…but I don’t drink it…unless its a frozen coke; I must admit they are my cryptonite!

Amber - Spent the weekend in Pigeon Forge, TN watching my dd (13) play some basketball. I love the time with my family and friends. The ball team is like our second family.

Joy - Coke. It’s all Coke.
🙂 We’re planning glow-in-the-dark bowling for our Spring Break.

Leah - It’s called soda here in So Cal. I only like Diet Coke though. The regular stuff is just too sugary. Any new crafts you’ll be doing? I need ideas for our spring break.

Rebecca - The Slap yo Mama seasoning is very popular in the south! You should try it!

Jackie Kepner Barnum - Looks like a lot of fun. Here in TN it’s just called coke. It doesn’t matter what kind. Just coke. So sometimes you have to ask for it by name like Dr. Pepper, cause you just may get a 7up. ;P

Kimberlee Jost - That meat counter in Little River reminds me of the one at Dales.
Sausage anyone?
Ha.

Heather S. - I have soda (pop) about once or twice a month when I am just craving it. I, too, though usually only manage to get about 1/3-1/2 of it down and I’m done. And yes, it does make me feel crummy.

Liz Schmidt - You have to go back to Little River and try FatBoyz. They have the best steak ever!

happygirl - I don’t drink pop, yeah, pop, either. I enjoy watching your family through your blog. Your family gives me hope for the future of this country. We need more families like yours. 🙂

Kathryn Goertzen - Just a small town girl livin in a small town world . . . or something like that.
In Nebraska we call it POP.
And at noon we eat DINNER. . . and in the evening we eat SUPPER.

Jimi - So, I’m just curious what you get at Sonic if you’re not getting soda/pop?

Dana @ Bungalow'56 - Megan, I always comment to the girls when I see someone with a kind face. We all try to figure out what it is, but we can’t, but we all know one when we see one. It struck me in your post today. Sean has a wonderfully kind face.
Dana

Shar - Oh what a joy of a family that you have. Treasure it girl, time will go by all too fast. My grown up son asked me what kind of an APP (for phones, etc.) I would like. I said an app to have more time with my family!

Jacci - it cracks me up how everyone idealizes small towns. BUTT RUB, people!!! 🙂 There’s good and bad, just like everywhere else.
I grew up in a not so small “small” town in Ohio. But, all around us, there were really small towns, just like this. I dated a guy once from a *small* town nearby and when we went to get a movie to watch at his house, we rented it from – literally – a shack with videos propped against the walls on shelves. Totally cracked me up.

Kelly - Oh… I’ve spent many a weekend with a little-black-sharpie- marker- X on my hand, too! 🙂
Gotta love the small towns! We have one stop-light in ours. And a gas station/deli that you can get a bite to eat at, too. Everybody knows everybody…. which can be good, and bad!

Rachel Spin - Please, oh please, can you give some info about that cute necklace in the soda pop picture??? I have a jewelry problem. And turquoise and red are my most favorite colors. And Mother’s Day is coming up, no? My dad grew up in a small town like that. My first teaching job was in a small town too, if 3000 is small. Happy Spring Break!!!

Tiffany - I don’t think I’ve ever been to towns that small, ever. Oh the simplicity and town knowledge that must be there. And you said it perfect, so much joy in watching your child in their element. What a joy to live to see and be a part of as a family.
