going on over here

i posted this picture on Instagram a couple of weeks ago.
talby called me after she’d left with sean for school and said “MOM! HURRY! GO OUTSIDE! There’s a FULL RAINBOW! HURRY!”
so i ran out to the driveway in my pajamas and saw THIS!
i mean – whaaaaat?!
and just as i was taking the photo it began to rain.
the rain lasted about 2 minutes and the rainbow was gone.
but i was beaming with joy about it for hours.

and this was the sunset on the way home from ball games later that same day!
the sky was getting so fancy for a plain old tuesday!

we have a new kitten.
there have been many names thrown around for her but i chose Yzma from Emperor’s New Groove.
the kids still disagree with me but no one will make up their mind any other way so Yzma it is!

talby’s club team has a tournament every weekend for like… ever.
but it has been SO fun to watch them find their stride.
it’s a really great team that talby loves to be with – which makes me happy to see too!

we were in lawrence for a volleyball tournament and decided to catch a KU game the same day.
(omg – the guy behind us!) ha ha ha
we had just the youngest two kids with us which is always fun to change the dynamics a little.

it was a GREAT game!
craig was loving every minute.
watching a game in Allen Fieldhouse is always awesome – A L W A Y S !

another great sunset last week!

i made these monster cookies last weekend.
yummmmm!
i already bought everything to make them again.

more volleyball tournaments and more hugs.

in the last week i have seen all three of these movies.
YOU MUST go see them!
all three of them!

ok… my list for the week is slightly depressing.
i just want to snuggle into bed and not be prodcutive… is that so wrong?
🙂

Emily - Double rainbow!!!!

Ashley Pera - Made the Monster cookies for Super Bowl Sunday… Sweet Jesus!!!! They were so good. Quick question… I noticed in the picture that you were making them regular size??? Do you cook them any less? Thanks in advance…
Ashley from Tennessee

Teyonce - I always love catching up on your blog, it’s like we are sitting down chatting cause I can hear your voice as I read. I really love that. We should probably do it in real life…like soon. love you!

KWolff - I think your week sounds pretty awesome! We are in the early stages of volleyball tournaments. It was a whole new world for me. It was a lot of fun though. Your KU game was against my Texas Tech Red Raiders – it looked like a blast to be at! 😀
Thanks for sharing the pretty rainbow/sunset photos. They are so gorgeous on a dreary day!

kristin - Monster cookies for Super Bowl Sunday! Thanks for posting 🙂

Teresa - Rock Chalk Jayhawk! Allen Field House is the only place to watch college basketball!

Sandra K - Oh how I ADORED La La Land. It was so wonderful and it is a movie that has stayed with me. Now I’m listening to the soundtrack on repeat. I have to go see Hidden Figures soon. Happy Wednesday to you! 🙂

Jenny B. - That is the cutest kitten!! Makes me want one. 🙂

Lisa - That kitten oh my is that the cutest thing every!!! Thanks for sharing your week, looks wonderful!

anna - so i have to ask what was your thoughts on the ending of la la land??? my friend and i went and we were crying at the end. and then we laughed so hard because we were crying so hard. then we started crying again. and on and on. we stayed in the theater until all the credits were done and the lights came back on. we were so shocked!!

Lori - That rainbow is gorgeous and those cookies look amazing!

Shay @ Whine Less, Breathe More - Your kitten is so darn cute! I really like the name, too.

I’ve never been to a game at KU, but several at KSU and MU. So fun! I’m probably not allowed in Lawrence. 😉

september is over???

img_4480
one of my top favorite summer/fall experiences is finding a sunflower field.
and some years i never do.
in case you don’t know… sunflowers are a crop that farmers plant like they would with wheat or corn or soybeans.
they are BEAUTIFUL but serve a purpose with their seeds.
“the seeds are used to make cooking oil, margarine, mayonnaise, salad dressings, snack food, hair oil, swine and poultry feed, fireplace logs and low-grade furnace fuel.” – i googled that.
they are always in different fields each year – which is why they can be hard to find.
i have yet to see sunflowers in the same field two summers in a row… but i don’t have the knowledge to explain exactly why that is.
it has to do with dirt and stuff.  (that’s a farmer-y word – “stuff”)
we get lots of questions when people come to kansas about sunflowers so i am just passing on my helpful info.
ha ha ha
fullsizerender-21img_4566
talby was my willing model.
fullsizerender-8fullsizerender-30
seriously though????
this was with my phone and the sun had just set.
i wish we’d taken it with the big camera 10 minutes earlier.

16
waffle is such a lover.

fullsizerender-27six
this super cute puffy vest is at Sam’s club!  whaaaat?!
GO GET ONE!!!
and take a selfie for your friends in the feminine products & bread aisle like me!

fullsizerender-24twelve
donuts are my weakness…. they are just too pretty!!!

sean is about halfway through his football season.
i am actually starting to catch on to what is going on out there!

img_3644
scotty stopped by one of talby’s volleyball games.
i was trying not to hug him TOO much.
but i can’t help myself.
ten
the second time i went out to photograph the sunflower field i had a wonderful experience.
i was alone and walked out into the field about 50 feet maybe.
i was clicking away with my camera and i noticed a monarch fluttering around me.
then i stopped looking through my screen and looked at the field and there were butterflies EVERYWHERE!
it was so quiet.  the only sound was the leaves flapping, bees buzzing and butterflies wings flapping.
it felt like a dream.
img_4236
garden spiders are so gross and so cool.
everyone says they are harmless but they still creep me out so much.
this one was all the way at the back of the yard by the chicken coop so i felt okay about it.
it was as big as my palm.
{{{{shudder}}}}
fiveimg_5653
these yellow flowers are weeds/wildflowers that are 7 feet tall in the back yard.
and that sun really did look like that.
i had to edit it my photo a lot to get that to show up but that is pretty much exactly what my eyes saw!
fourwaffle was not in the mood for selfies.
hugs for scott after he stopped by the house for a haircut.  🙂

fullsizerender-70
img_260415
talby got to go to her first homecoming dance.
it’s been a long time since i have dressed shopped with a teen.
the thing i forgot is that the stores are full of other teens shopping as well.
and it’s loud.
and they slam their dressing room doors over and over.
and play music on their phones.
oy veh!
but it was fun to spend time with talby and find a pretty dress!

fullsizerender-68
sean is in red… third one in that is bent down on the ground.
i don’t know his position.
i just know his number.
i focus on that.
“where’s #53?”  that is pretty much ALL i think about during his games.
it’s working for me.
19
waffle always prances around so happily after a haircut.

fullsizerender-69
penultimatefullsizerender-6eleven
this pumpkin???
crazy town.
i bought it at sams when i bought that buffalo check vest.  🙂
img_2569fullsizerender-22
i had a birthday last week.
my parents were visiting to help me celebrate.
i got my hair colored that day too!
i haven’t colored my hair for three years and made the decision to do it for some self care.
i remembered how much i like getting something new – a cut or a color – so i booked it.
i almost cancelled 20 different times.
money… time… upkeep… fear… energy….  but in the end i went!
woo-hoo!
it doesn’t look too different but it’s a little darker… with some red in there.
but it is shiny and fresh and healthy now and that feels great!
yay for self care!!!
nineimg_5240
my friend shelley sent me a box of rainbow frosted sugar cookies!
what in the world???
it was the sweetest gift!
literally.
i shared a few but i made sure i got the most!
seven
i also got the most amazing vintage green polka dot quilt/blanket in the mail from a friend.
it was such a wild birthday surprise!
i couldn’t love it more!

and there was cake and candles and singing happy birthday of course.
13
forty one.
here’s hoping forty one is a year of learning and graciously accepting growth and change.
and lots of fun.
and losing 20 pounds and becoming a marathon runner/mountain climber/disco queen.
HA HA HA!
just kidding!

mostly.
😉

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - That field sounds like a dream! So glad it happened to you!

Kathi - Meg, you look beautiful! Your kids look happy. Waffle is such a dork 😉 The selfie with his eyes closed is perfect! Thanks for sharing!

Melissa - Meg, I always love your beautiful posts full of happy pictures but you SERIOUSLY HAVE to post a trigger warning or something before you post a spider like that again! loving this week…

98-01
i always enjoy Jamie Ivey’s Happy Hour podcast but THIS ONE with Katherine Wolf was complete Truth.
she talks about surviving a massive stroke at 26 years old when her baby was 6 months old.
she is amazing.
i laughed and i cried and thought hard about my own life.
you have got to listen to Katherine’s story and her inspiring outlook on life.

absolutely LOVED this post from Young House Love!
ShopHouseStairs-1ShopHouseDining
they gave the paint colors for each room of their house AND linked where to buy the same or very similar items.
i believe i said out loud to my screen “BRILLIANT!”
and i bought something too!
high five to John & Sherry.   🙂
YHL
have you read their books?   Young House Love and Lovable Livable Home
they have serious style.

.

these videos at People Are Awesome are C R A Z Y.
how do they do those things???

.

IMG_0792
i found this magazine at Barnes&Noble and it was SOOOO good!
it was FULL of happy light filled farmhouses with colorful vintage finds.
it was a nice treat to come across.
sometimes i miss the pre-pinterest magazine days.
i used to get SO MAD when anyone would even open one of my new magazines before i did.
HA!
what a dork!

.

US President Barack Obama speaks on the economy in the NanoFab Extension Building on May 8, 2012 following a tour of the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering
this blog post that features politicians and world leaders if they had man buns…. so funny!
i guess it’s been around awhile but i hadn’t seen it until this week.
oh my gosh – it made me crack up!
i couldn’t pick a favorite.

.

my indulgence recently…. DELICIOUS.
i have only tried the coconut because coconut is the best flavor ever made.   🙂
why would i waste time on anything else?
these popsicles seem better for me than some of the choices i would normally make.
but it might not be.
and i don’t really care.

51XeN2UYoyL._SL1000_
i saved the best for last for this week’s list…. the Amazon Echo.
we picked it up on a whim on amazon’s Prime Day in early july.  (it was like black friday in july on amazon)
it is so cool and we are loving it!
our friends saw us using it and said “well that is pretty slick!”
and it totally is!!!
The Echo a hands free speaker that you control with your voice (it answers to the name is Alexa)
it plays your music on spotify, amazon prime, pandora and iHeartRadio by you telling it to.
you can turn the volume up or down from across the room with your voice!
it can answer questions, tell you the weather or sports scores or traffic and she keeps a shopping list for you!
so i can be cooking in the kitchen with my hands covered in meatball prep and i can say “Alexa – add bread crumbs to my shopping list” and she does it!
it goes to my alexa app on my phone and it’s all there when i go to the store.
it can call an Uber for you!
Or turn down your thermostat or even your lights!
this is like something from The Jetson’s!!!
two thumbs up for the Echo!
61cnyft6IlL._SL1000_

soooo…. what about YOU?  anything you are loving this week?
let’s hear it!

Marla Jensen - I kept forgetting to THANK YOU FOR LINKING JAMIE IVEY’S PODCAST! That’s in all caps because I would scream it for joy if I was really with you. We just moved and I took a month off facebook to do ‘better things’ and not sure why I’ve missed the Happy Hour’s existence but I’m totally obsessed! It’s been sooo encouraging! Thank you!!!!

Tanya H - My dad has had the Echo for quite a while, he got it in the Amazon preorder. My daughter and nieces got grounded from asking Alexa to tell them a joke. 😉 I like it most of the time, but I do get tired of “Alexa” responding to us having conversations and suddenly saying “I didn’t understand your question.” ….are you feeling ignored?? haha!

stephany - i also picked up that modern farmhouse style magazine while we were visiting colorado. i loved it! i especially loved that some of the kitchen designs were just like what i came home to in our newly remodeled kitchen! yay!

laura b - loved the man bun photo! thanks for sharing a little humor today!

Kelly Krause - I need to get my hands on Katherine and Jay’s book. I have followed her story from the time that the stroke happened, they were friends of my sister when she was living in LA.

jeri - Don’t waste your time with any other flavor…you will be sad because the coconut is the best! 😉

chrissi - you are so right about the coconut bars….why try any other flavor? the best. echo??? she is my true friend. the grocery list app saves me tears while shopping. her jokes are the best and her games keep us entertained while making dinner. katherine wolf and her cute family…all the hearts forever. great list meg♥

Juli - I visited my nephew’s house recently. He got an Echo while I was there, and he and his wife use it all the time, mostly to listen to music. Because they have three little kids under the age of six, their music selections veer between Gen-X favorites and “The Wheels on the Bus” type things!

cindy b. - if you haven’t read Katherine and Jay Wolfe’s book “Hope Heals” yet, I cannot recommend it enough – it is written by both from the perspective – truly amazing.

Nat - We got an echo for Christmas last year and we love it. My kiddos think it’s extra hilarious to ask Alexa to tell them a joke.

Jennifer - I have become totally obsessed with Coconut Sparkling Water and the Pure from Crystal Light. Mix the two together and its heaven. Like you, I love coconut anything. Of course, the La Croix coconut SW was out and our local store had their own brand and their own brand of CL. Cheaper is better right? Definitely try it out…very refreshing and almost calorie free! I instagrammed about it if you need a pic.

busy summer weeks

the days of summer are just flying by!
i’m loving the sunshine and that heat… everyone likes to complain about how hot it is but the heat is SO MUCH BETTER than the freezing cold winters!  Give me summer heat forever!
IMG_8763
First of all… i’m still loving the Paperworks Kit that comes every month!
each month’s design is different and fun!
CLICK HERE to find all the information you will need about THE cutest stationary, calendars & lists.

.

and then i wanted to share all about the amazing fire pit area that craig made for us!!!
IMG_8207
our yard backs up to a field that is used for crops each summer.
this year is corn which i am soooo thrilled about.
i really really REALLY hope that someday it will be sunflowers.
can you imagine that?!
it would truly be a dream come true to me.
like seriously…. that is a bucket list kind of thing!

IMG_8205
we already had the railroad ties on the back of our lot and the landscaping stones as well.
alllllllllllllllll the flower beds around our house on all four sides were filled with this rock.
so many rocks!
i get what its purpose is but it’s not what i like in a flower bed for my garden.
first craig mowed and killed the grass/weeds where the rocks would go.
next he laid down landscaping fabric to kill and block new weeds.
then he moved this rock from the flower beds to the fire pit area.
brilliant!

i feel super loved every time i look outside and see it.
now if we could not be so busy that we could sit out there more often…
IMG_8673IMG_8688
we ended up getting the chairs and cushions from World Market.

IMG_8349
it’s wonderful in the morning and the evening!
IMG_8300

IMG_8695
we can watch the sunset from here every night!
it is so perfect.
i could not love it more.
.
IMG_8103
i got to have some very fun visitors to the Craft House!
my girlfriends, Tara, Kimberlee and Amy and i hung out for a long weekend doing absolutely nothing and loving every minute of it!
we watched movies, ate junk food, painted our nails, went antiquing and even stopped by to see the chickens.
IMG_7998IMG_8017IMG_8020IMG_8188
talby made it home safely from her missions trip to honduras.
everyone missed her… even the dogs!
IMG_8168IMG_8515IMG_8713FullSizeRender 4
we have a jungle of wild sunflowers in front of the coop!
since i only have to go in there every few days it isn’t that big of a deal.
unless it’s going to become grasshopper invested… then i will freak.

i encouraged this chicken to practice a little flying after i loved on her a bit.
IMG_9123
i gardened like a maniac last week.
i had over 25 plants to get in the ground!
i was the sweatiest i have ever been.  Literally!

our friends got THE CUTEST new puppy!
he is soooo soft and has puppy breath too.
auuuwwwww!
thank goodness we have plenty of cuteness over here so we aren’t too sad about not having an adorable puppy.
IMG_8441IMG_8287IMG_8281

April R - we haven’t had a traditional or “summery” summer here and it’s been difficult at times not to be really sad about it. We are moving far from our friends and it’s been dragged out by the process of selling our house :p Soooo this post was cheerful and sweet and just a reminder of what we might build and work towards when we finally arrive at the new town/home. Thank you for sharing 🙂

Katie E. - Hey that puppy was at my house today! Super cute picture(s)!

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - It looks like you are having an awesome summer! Woo hoo! BTW – So happy for your weekend at the craft house! Those people are the bestest people ever.

marcie - Lots of good stuff but Yay!! to Talby for going to Honduras on a mission trip. My daughter and I went to Honduras for the 3rd year in a row in June. I hope it was as amazing for her as it always is for us!!

Chris - I never get tired of your dogs, flowers, chickens or fire pit. Lovely to look at, always!

Kimberly Dial - I loved this post. Looks like you all are having an awesome Summer!

Gabby - Yet another reason to love you and your blog: I, too MUCH prefer the heat to the cold – and I, too want to be outside even with a blanket over my legs in the summer! Thanks for the affirmation!

Jenn N - Love, love, love, the fire pit. What beautiful post; pictures are great. Summer fun!

jennibell - I agree!!! Give me summer heat ANY day over those cold, icy days of winter.
Love your landscaping and your firepit is the BEST. . .lucky you.
Glad you are enjoying your summer. . .your pups are so cute but they are a lot of work — good for you 🙂

Carolyne Hallum - We are in the thick of Winter here so I just love the photo’s you’ve put up today… summery, bright and fun.

Lori - I never get tired of seeing photos of your home. So beautiful!

Sarajane - I will need a copy of the picture of talby and ace. They both are adorable!

Lynne - OH, your yard is amazing. The sky looked a little creepy in one photo dark clouds scary. The chicken good flying. He needs goggles. HaHa. Your beverages look great for morning and night. Do you have a labordoodle? That golden puppy was so so precious The breath I totally know the breath yeah!!!!!
Happy summer!!!!!!! It is passing us by quickly. We are in a drought so our lawn looks like a hay field. SAD You would think on the New Hampshire Seacoast we would have beautiful lawn not so much. Lets hope our garden can make it with tomato, cuke, zuke, summer squash, grape tomato, and spag’s squash. OH all most forgot the butternut squash.

ENJOY THE SUMMER NIGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!

rainbow
i hope by now you have seen the rainbow beauty at Target!
it’s incredible.
it makes me so happy!
It’s in the outdoor summer area in the store but of course mine was totally picked over.
you can order all of it online as well… but it’s not that easy to find (that i can find at least) on their site.
so i searched things like “summer rainbow tray” & “summer beverage dispenser” and found them all.
good luck to you!

colleen - You could make that sweet ribbon flag with longer strips of your scraps that you make bunting with….especially for the door porch at the craft house!

jennibell - How did you know that I just bought strawberries and was looking for a new way to eat them?? Awesome! I got up while I was reading the recipe and put the butter out to soften. . .then came back 🙂
Looks like you are having a fabulous summer – yea!

Jessica - Thank you so much for featuring my succulent letter Meg!! Appreciate it so much!! Have a wonderful summer! Jessica

Lori - P.S. LOVED hearing you on The Happy Hour this week. Was so fun to hear the voice of a blog I’ve been reading for so many years! ❤️💛💚💙💜

Lori - Super fun post. Especially love the planter and the video 🙂

Jennifer Greeley - They didn’t have much to choose from at our Target either. Michael’s was having a sale a couple of weeks ago on the tie dyed kits and t shirts, so I snatch a few. Agreed, that its a great summer project.
