smiling.

this week has been packed.
but school has ended for four of my kids.
i plan on sleeping in tomorrow…. FINALLY.

nevermind i was just told i need to give a ride to the last one in school.

darn.

IMG_0358

talby wanted rainbow cake for school but we settled on rainbow cupcakes instead… quicker.

IMG_0402

we finally let waffle outside while the chickens were outside.
together.
it was… decent.
he was very curious and probably would have been naughty if we weren't there.
but he won't ever be with them without us there so we should all be fine.

"who's a good boy? who's the best dog?"

IMG_0420

their last day to ride the bus because today i drove them in… and we were even late!
i was going to take them for donuts but they said "can you make pumpkin muffins instead?"
umm… and not have to get out of my pajamas or brush my teeth?  yes please.  :)

IMG_0429

the peonies have juuuuust started to bloom around here.
they are each so incredibly gorgeous.

IMG_0445

IMG_0449

on tuesday i took the entire day for myself.
no one else.
just me… because i knew that school was almost done and my alone time would be gone soon.
i searched the mall for a swimsuit….
i tried on no less that 75 suits.  i kid you not.

and finally FINALLY they have started selling suits based on your BUST size.
thank goodness.
what a brilliant idea someone had!
because out of 75+… i picked one… based on my bust.

and check out how hip and with it JCPENNY looked yesterday?!
IMG_0452

i was totally impressed.

i got home from my swimsuit shopping and these cows were eating across the road from the house.
i am so happy to see them back again.

talby got this paper at school and took a LOT of time  coloring it in.

IMG_0487

lovely.

school's out.
we have a Summer List to make.
i am so behind on laundry.
and sleep.

what are your big plans coming up this summer?

tara - I tried on suits last Monday….took my 6 year old daughter with me…mistake. epic.
she laughed…not because she’s mean, but bc the sight was hilarious. 🙂
I finally landed on land’s end…black tankini. love it…and I never love a bathing suit.
glad you found one.

Jenny B. - Where did you end up buying your suit? I need one, and my bust is usually the deal breaker. Underwires? Yes, please. 🙂

Shelly Massey - Aimee… the girls have school for FIVE more weeks?! I cannot decide if that’s awesome or terrible.

Jenna - Oh that dirt road looks like home! I’m spending the summer with my baby boy and could not be more excited. And because of that baby boy, I need a new swimsuit. 😉 Where is yours from?

kate@stillroomtogrow - i too was in JCP recently and was super impressed with them! what happened? They have got it going on for sure! happy summer!

Alicia @ La Famille - we are moving to a new house and decorating that…doing lots of projects! yay!!

Katia

colleen - we are in CT.. we had hurricane sandy and 36 inches of snow in February…. my kids don’t get out until well june 27th….thank God!
good luck… love this post.. you don’t seem at all anxious, just relaxed and happy…. as they are saying nearby to me in Newtown…. may you have an Invincible Summer.

Shannon - We still have school for another 9 days!! I can’t wait for a 3 day weekend and sleeping in. I LOVE your pictures they always make me so happy, the bright colors in every picture is amazing.
Happy Summertime to you!

holly - I love your posts!! Your blog is wonderful!! I love your house pictures and Kansas looks so beautiful! I was born and raised in California. Its all I know! Your blog posts always inspire me!! I would so love to come to one of your craft weekends@@ Waffle is adorable!! Happy Summer!

Whitney - Kansas looks so beautiful!!! I must come to a craft weekend 🙂

Carrie - This is the first summer that I have to work and I thought I would be ok with it, I am not, I am so not. I am a teacher and I recently switched to working as a preschool special ed itinerant teacher. I only work 2 days a week for 4 1/2 weeks this summer and I am whining about. I need to stop! I have 3 weeks off in the beginning and 3 weeks off at the end of the summer. We signed my 5 year old up for swim team and we joined the pool. We will also spend a large amount of time at a local arboretum and Longwood Gardens along with the library and end the summer with a 2 week trip to the beach. Then my youngest goes to Kindergarten, sigh.

Cindy - Yeah for taking a day for yourself!!! Just curious, how do you make rainbow cupcakes? I have never made a rainbow cake but I would guess that it is made in
different layers with each layer a different color. It is finally warmer & the sun is out here in Nebraska. Have a wonderful summer!!! Hope that you get to sleep in sometime soon & get rested up.

Becca - Going to London and Paris with my daughter, it’s our dream trip and we are finally going in June. Yay us!

stephanie - siiiiigh….I love peonies…and Kansas. I want to move back.

Seriously Sassy Mama - Our last day is today too. Tomorrow morning we are waking up and having breakfast at IHOP where we will have a meeting and discuss out summer to do list. Then, we are going to watch Iron Man 3. I was very excited until they just started yelling at each other over the play doh.

Kelly - I also want to know who sells swimsuits based on bust size. It has been a problem for me as well, especially this year.

Tracy - As of yesterday, all 4 of my kids are out too! YAY! I love summer! 🙂

Barbara - I was in JCP a couple weeks ago yes they have changed so much better and your town is just a sight, love the cow sticking her tongue out so silly.

Lindsey - I love all your potted plants in the pictures – they look gorgeous! No fun summer plans yet. I was going to make a list then decided I would wait to see if you posted one, then go off that! Ha! But seriously… post it. 🙂

Rachel Reeves - My one plan this summer: RELAX and be PEACEFUL! {out side in the kiddie pool, of course}

Kristin S - Clearly, we all want to know. This 34DDDD wants to know. Who sells swimsuits in bust sizes!?!?!?

aimee - what Shelly said! You make me miss Kansas, too. I have five more weeks of packing school lunches and getting my caboose out the door on time!

colleen from alabama - Where do they sell bathing suits by bust size? Are any of them cute enough for a 13 year old? preferably a tankini? I have a 13 who is a size 2/4 and has a 32DD bra! I am an AA so I am in totally uncharted territory. For right now she is okay with swim team suits. But I know that won’t last long. Would LOVE some help!

Shelly Massey - Ahhh… your photos made me miss Kansas. (I grew up there, but I still get to visit all my family there, so YAY.) And that’s a whole lotta hip packed into one space at jcpenney. After seeing your post, my big summer plan is to go to the mall to steal that banner from Sears.

Melissa - Love that you live in the country – someday I will. JcPenny has become quite hip lately it seems

beth larson - I loved your blog post today….. I soooo want to come to one of your craft weekends some time Meg, and am so curious- is the house you use for that on your farm?
p.s. I want some chickens….. are they really messy to have around?
the sun is finally, finally shining here today in Minnesota and it’s making me feel like a new woman!
xo beth

angela - Kansas is gorgeous!! Reminds me a little of our North Carolina…so green!!! I was just thinking yesterday about making a summer list!

Mary Peterson - Good Morning! Thanks for posting the pics of the beautiful Kansas spring! We’re making our annual trip to McPherson, Lindsborg and Hutch for my husbands family reunion this weekend. We always love the landscape in Kansas! Any place we should not miss while there?
Thanks, I always enjoy your blog posts and pics!
Mary

Su@TheIntentionalHome - so what store did you end up buying your swimsuit at?

Penny - We have a litter of Goldendoodles and Saturday and Sunday are puppy pick days. Nine families will come and pick which puppy will go home with them in a few weeks! Love your chickens and of course we LOVE Waffle. He is the best. Goldendoodles are such wonderful family dogs! Love the cows! I grew up near cows and miss seeing them. I hope your summer can be full of relaxation and fun. What are Lauren’s plans for her future? Maybe you said and I missed it. or maybe she doesn’t want to share.

Martha - Where did u find a swimsuit? I am having same problem?

Jennifer - My friends five year old daughter recently had trouble finding a swimsuit herself…because she said, “Oh, they are all so beautiful!” When did we lose that sense of wonder and decide they all looked so ugly? I wish I could shop the way she does instead of just finding the passable outfit.

misty - we are moving in july {from Tulsa to Stillwater}
my sister in law is getting married to a fantastic guy & my husband, myself & my girls are all in the wedding {I LOVE weddings}
I’m taking a photography class
taking the girls to the zoo, splashpad, movies in the park, riverwalk in Jenks…. we are still making the list {but we have made one every year since 2009 (saw it on your blog} 🙂
The house we are buying is literally my dream home. It is where we had our wedding reception & we have wanted it for over a year, things finally fell into place. It needs a lot of updating & the lawn/landscaping has gone straight downhill, but I think it’s exciting to work on all of it & I just can’t wait to start picking out paint colors.
I’m making a bucket list for my 30’s
it’s going to be a long list…
chopping my hair is on there… i’m nervous about it, so I might make that the 1st thing I do for the summer.
go to a craft weekend is also on there… skydive, grow a huge garden, learn to knit, take a painting class, family music video….. several more things & I think I am going to take the scariest ones & start there 🙂
happy summer!

class of 2013

IMG_2397

well… she graduated.
we are VERY proud of her.
the ceremony was outdoors and the sky was so dark… even lightening in the distance.
it was nice to not be SO HOT but the weather was very iffy and made me nervous.
as soon as it ended the entire stadium emptied almost immediately.
it was raining shortly after.

IMG_0304

so we did not get photos of her afterward with friends or with her tassel, etc.
but we got this one really quick before the ceremony.
she got a new dress and looked so pretty!

our party almost didn't happen because of the weather.
there was even a tornado 30 minutes away!
i said "well… it's not a TRUE Kansas party without a tornado watch"

IMG_0344

she requested rainbow cake.
i hadn't made one in a few years…. remember when i first made it?
way back before they were EVERYWHERE.
BEFORE martha stewart.
granted martha's was very professional looking and perfect.
but mine is filled with a mama's love.
🙂
perfection is not the goal.

it was so fun to make it again.
IMG_2418

we kept the snacks and drink very simple.
and credit to my boys… they helped me big time preparing the food.
they rocked yesterday!
it was "Duerksen Team Effort" for sure all week long.
that was a huge blessing we kept it simple since it POURED hard rain just before the party.
anything elaborate we would have done would've been ruined.

IMG_0330

IMG_2462

IMG_2457
every party should have a baby.
it should be a rule.
so many of craig's family came by to wish lauren good luck in college and give her hugs.
one great thing about big milestones like graduations or weddings is seeing the family you don't see as often.

IMG_0335
IMG_0331

lauren with my mom and lauren with craig's mom.

IMG_2499

IMG_2473

it was so fun to have my friends show up to love on me as well as lauren.
high school graduation is big deal for the kids but also a BIG DEAL for the parents too!
and they snuck off and were cleaning up in my kitchen and doing dishes when i wasn't looking.
grown up friends are the best!

IMG_2375

IMG_2446

although… i prefer babies at parties that are not wearing K-State onesies.
he is so cute that i made an exception.
i was so busy that i never even got to hold this guy! lauren took over as baby holder for this party.

IMG_2491

IMG_0339
IMG_0320

family friends that we have had since i was 8 years old came to celebrate.
(my dad did not get the memo about the black shirt…)

i LOVE that they came.
that is love ya know?  showing up for your people.   taking the time.  it is meaningful.
it makes me teary.

IMG_2493

IMG_2452

IMG_2507

IMG_2514

IMG_2476

craig was face timing with his sister during the party.
🙂
isn't that fun?  she got a little tour of the party and said hello.
2013 is pretty awesome.

IMG_2519

i took an after photo this morning since it was too crazy yesterday.
our new little patio that we put in and all the pots of flowers make this place even happier.
it's so peaceful out there.
my chippy painted metal benches got new cushions. (home depot online)
i used all old pots, buckets and planters i already had to plant flowers inside.
the bunting is the same as what i sell in my shop…not weather proof but who cares.
it holds up just fine.

great party.

i think lauren felt loved.
and that was the most important part of yesterday for me.

and now i am going to go sit on that yellow bench.
🙂

Lynn - Congratulations and many blessings to you and your family. Your daughter Lauren has such a God blessed sweet spirit. Kudos to you as parents.

TAB - What a lovely party, lovely family and lovely grad. She’s beautiful.

Heidi - Beautiful post all-around. Our family recently drove 8 hours round trip (with two small kids) to attend a family graduation and we were so glad we did!

Rhonda Quaney - She is such a beauty. I can just feel her gentleness from here. Had to pray for your sweet girl. And every party should definitely have a baby. Your graduation party was complete with love, darling-ness, ….and the baby. Thanks for sharing it all.

Barbara (WA) - What a special day beautifully done! Time flies (my sons are in their 30’s now). Have a great after the big event weekend!
http://northislandcottage.blogspot.com/

Kat - I got all teary seeing Lauren so grown up, so I can only imagine how you feel.
What a gorgeous girl.
You have inspired me with your potted colour everywhere. So many beautiful flowers and I adore the pots.
Simple but oh so effective. One of those things that I often think I must do but rarely get around to.
We need some pops of colour on our deck as it is autumn and soon to be winter here in Aus.
It looked like a beautiful, colourful party, full of love.

Whitney - Love your patio, I want those benches!
Second- I cannot believe how grown up Lauren is! Gorgeous girl! I wish she let you tell us more about her life… so happy for you all, the party looked wonderful. Best wishes for Lauren in the future!

Angie - Congrats to Lauren! What a huge moment in all your lives
The party looked amazing. Your rainbow cake turned out just perfect
Wishing Lauren a future full of blessings 🙂

Bree - Congratulations to your daughter and to you all! Prayers for her transition into this new season of life. On another note-new pictures for the shop- yellow daisy picture, flowers with the green chair, and the fabulous yellow chick in the Barbie car! Love it! Happy and blessed week to you.

Barbara - Congratulations HS so many memories made in those short four years, love the patio all of it!

Kayla - Lauren, you are beautiful. You look so happy in your pictures! Congratulations on your graduation. Thanks for letting us get a glimpse of your life….we don’t see you enough on your mom’s blog. Can’t wait to see what the future holds for you!

Rach - I never knew until I became a parent how emotional all of our children’s milestones are on us as the parents. Our eldest is just finishing her first year in pre-school next week (which I am sure seems like so long ago for you after watching your eldest just graduate from high-school) and I find myself filled with heartache at the passing of such a milestone in her life. There will be so many more of these end of the school year events in her life and with each I will shed a tear as I watch her grow and thrive and get one step closer to leaving our home to become her own person and start her own life. Congratulations Meg on raising a wonderful young woman. May she only continue to thrive and grow outside the shelter of your heart and home.

elisa - I love the pic with your daughter surrounded with older women on the porch. We all need older women to look up too and help shape us.

Flower Patch Farmgirl - She did it!!!!! I remember my HS grad and party like it was YESTERDAY. Weird??
Your party was awesome. You looked so pretty. Lauren, too.
I’m glad your people showed up for you. 🙂
Hope you all felt way loved.
And I was going to tell you that I’m probably going to steal your bunting idea but I figured it was waterproof. Since it’s not, I’m extra-on it!

Valerie @ Chateau a la mode - Congrats to your beautiful Lauren!

Tracy - Congratulations to Lauren and your whole family! Next year we will be celebrating my oldest’s high school graduation. I can’t believe it! Where has the time gone??
Where has Lauren decided to go to school? I’m in KC and went to KU. My husband went to Missouri. My son is leaning toward Mizzou 🙁 I feel the same way about K-State as you do!!
BTW I love your blog!

chrissi - congrats to lauren. what a wonderful circle of family and friends that came to show their love for such a pretty girl. (congrats to mom and dad too for getting through a graduation day/party.)

Lisa - Such a big deal having a child graduate high school! Congratulations to both of you!

Lori Austin - Congrats to Lauren (btw, she is so beautiful!).
Looks like a wonderful celebration with family.
You bright, fun patio is fantastic.
Container flowers turned out beautiful as well.

Rachel Reeves - It looked special and sweet, Meg.
A day that she won’t soon forget.

susan - Congratulations to Lauren! Love to read about FAMILY gatherings. Memories
to keep forever.
Meg, you have a beautiful family. Blessed by your writing.

Carol S. - It all looks wonderful. Congrats to you and your family. Good things are coming next! Freshman college son just home now and we are enjoying a “new and improved” version of him. After a year of independence, he seems engaged and appreciates of home and our family. Yay! Gotta plant more large buckets of flowers and get some festive bunting…fantastic inspiration pics. Awesome patio.

Tiffany - This makes me happy. I’m so glad you have such fantastic family and friends around you. What a blessing. (And your place looks SUPER cute!) (AND, Martha has nothing on you.)

Amy - I just love everything about you. (As much as I can know from reading your blog for the last four+ years) Except the fact that you don’t love K-State. Oh well. No one is perfect. 🙂
Just kidding.
Congratulations!! The party looks amazing! Your family is beautiful!

Dawn Gross - Congratulations! That’s a big milestone.
Your house looks super cute – patio is lovely.
Glad you all are safe & sound.

Mac - Congratulations to Lauren and your family on her graduation. Your rainbow cake which I saw on the Poppytalk blog a couple of years ago is what inspired me to start following your blog. It certainly is a great symbol for your happy, optimistic but always realistic blog which I continue to enjoy every morning once my 4 children are off to school.

Kristin S - Beautiful!

misty - congratulations lauren!!! I have been following your blog since july of 2008 & it doesn’t seem possible that your lauren is graduating!
love your seating area & those striped cushions. what a fun party. I alway associate a rainbow cake with you meg! not martha! i think martha must have ppl reading your blog to find out what’s cool 😉
stay safe from this crazy weather! we have been taking cover & praying.

elma - What a wonderful party!! Congratulations to Lauren may the Lord be with her and Bless her!!

The Domestic Fringe - Congrats to your daughter! Looks like a fabulous party. Love the cake.
~FringeGirl

vicki - You, my darling, can make anywhere feel like a home. What a lovely way to go through life. Your daughter is breathtaking. Congratulations family. And friends. And family friends. I firmly believe it takes a village….congratulations village…what a lovely woman you have all raised. Happy summer to you and your dear family. Good luck young lady on what lies ahead.

Pat - congratulations to Lauren on her big day! I must say, that yard looked like the perfect place for a party. I’m a little jealous, wished that was my happy patio!! You guys did an amazing job!

Alicia @ La Famille - congrats to your little girl!!! and your pictures are so happy! glad the weather held up for you. 🙂

Kimberlee Jost - Beautiful.
I am happy that Lauren feels loved, and that you do, too.

Georgia - Love the photos, lauren looks so grown up!
Good luck to her, college next?
I dont know how it works in the USA, as she would still be in 6th form, or college in the uk.. confusing! 🙂 x

Cindy in WA - Congrats to Lauren!!! My oldest is graduating in a few weeks too! Is she going to a local college or far away?

jerusalem - ok, now I am weepy too! I have a yellow glider like yours-it was my great-grandmothers and came here all the way from Mississippi. I love it and I love your little patio area.

Chantelle - Congrats to you all. Lauren is a beautiful girl! PS: love the cake!

Susan - Congratulations to your pretty daughter, Lauren. She will treasure this moment forever. Congratulations to you and your husband. These moments are bittersweet. However, she will still need you both and she will seek your counsel in the days and years to come. Then, one day, you will discover that not only do you love her but you like her! Those are precious moments also. From a mom who has already traveled that road, it seems that you did a GOOD JOB!

lisa currie-gurney - Congratulations to you and Craig.
You’ve done it.
God is good.
So good.
Hugs From My Heart

Katey - Congratulations to the Whole Family!!! My son graduated last year and I will have another one next year. It goes by way too fast!! It’s tough. Tough on everyone. Glad you had a nice party and loving memories of the day.

Terrie G - Congrats to Lauren & You & Craig!! You are so right…it is a big deal for the parents too!
I worried about all of the graduations going on with our crazy weather yesterday!
Glad that you were able to celebrate & all were safe.
LOVED the rainbow cake! And your home was decorated beautifully.
Lauren is growing up into quite a beautiful young lady!
And that baby!! I must say, I had to make sure I was reading your blog
when I saw the K-State onsie..but I thought it was the cutest outfit EVER!! Wink, Wink!!
Hope your week is relaxing!! 🙂
I’m off to buy flowers…well, maybe after this storm passes!
Can you believe I haven’t even purchased one yet this year!

Jennifer - So fun, a day she will remember forever!

this week….

we have had a FULL week with more excitement still to come.

life skills being taught….

IMG_0014

waffle was naughty and completely dorky as usual.
he got on the couch while i was still home!
how is he smart enough to know not to get on when craig is home and that i won't do anything?
it's crazy.
he slept with his leg up in the air for a long time.
IMG_0124

IMG_0126
ha ha haaaaaaa

read this in The Message this week….

IMG_0108

"His love was not cautious but extravagant"

IMG_1538

the kids tried to dress up the chickens with american girl doll clothes.
but realized chickens don't have arms to make it work.
it was funny to try though.

IMG_1549

IMG_1548

IMG_1566

one of these days those chicks will be gone & we will know that they learned how to hot wire Barbie's car…

IMG_0022

i like having lunch with my kids.
i wish i had done it with my older kids.
i didn't know that was a thing that people did.
your kids would love it if you showed up too. (with no other siblings… just you… and fast food)

IMG_2069

campfires are pretty much the best thing ever.
i have tried my best to keep all s'more ingredients stocked all all times at our house.

IMG_0257
mother's day was a very nice day.
i try very hard to keep expectations VERY low and that helps to keep the day flowing well.
i was treated to homemade cards by the little girls…. and cashed in that free coffee immediately.

IMG_0094
after church i went in my bedroom and shut the door and relaxed while my family made the entire lunch.
what a nice treat to come out to a completely set table AND food.

then i went straight back in my room while they cleaned it up.

best mother's day i have had in many years.

gardening this year in pots only….this is a huge relief to me.
the thought of gardening was LOOMING over me and i wasn't excited about it.
but this is perfect!

IMG_0255

lauren is done with high school.
forever.
it's so crazy how fast that passed!
we are so proud that she made it through with excellent grades and can't wait to see her future unfold.

her graduation is sunday afternoon.
it's been an emotional week….

IMG_0256

this is what happens on a daily basis here.
if we don't do the dishes every 18-24 hours… it looks like this.
NO JOKE.
we even ate on paper plates that day!

IMG_0246

i sported pigtails today.
after a 3 week break…. i went out for a run with my friends this morning.

it was short & sweet but felt so good to remember that i did still know how to run.  :)

IMG_0251

as i drank my second cup of coffee i looked down and realized i was a rainbow of colors.

so… we have a very busy weekend filled with parties to attend & to give, basketball, shopping, cleaning, rainbow cake making, graduation cermony and grandparents coming.

what do you have going on in your life?

s - Love the kitchen sink pic…I keep up with the dishes but not so much the clutter and piles…sigh

misty - meg, you have to read this blog post
http://lullabylubbock.blogspot.com/2013/04/rainbows.html
Kristen loves a rainbow as much as you 🙂 She is another fave blogger of mine & I messaged her about your blog too. I think you’ll love her sweet post

Rachel S - I discovered your blog a few weeks ago, and I have to tell you I’m addicted. I love how you show your real life, (with real messes in kitchens), the Scriptures, life with kids, the crafts (oh how I’d LOVE to be able to come to a craft weekend!!), the photos, etc. I have 3 kids and my oldest will graduate next year. It’s already hard on me, so I look forward to hearing how you make it through the change in seasons. So thank you for sharing your life with us! 🙂 Have a happy day!

miranda - Love your post today I laughed at those crazy chicks~~ and congrats on everything!!!!

Whitney - Oh my goodness, how is she old enough to graduate! They are growing up (too quickly) before our very eyes! Congratulations Lauren! Excited to see what the next step for her is!

mary - Love that you showed your dishes. my three kids are under five and this is how my kitchen looks after 24 hours of no doing dishes. Refreshing to see real life with kids. I used to panic when there would be a knock on the door when the kitchen looked like this, I am learning more and more that this is real life and it is good to share real life with people. Thanks for being real it helps me continue to be authentic too.

Victoria - Congratulations on the graduate! I know you guys must be proud.
Loving the littles dressing the chickens up in clothes!

Mindy - Oh, those chicken pictures make my heart happy – and the verse from the message makes it happier yet!

Connie - Congratulations to your daughter!! Thanks for the honest picture of your kitchen….nice to know I’m not alone!

Kari - congrats to lauren! that is great…
glad to see mine is not the only kitchen that looks like that 🙂 my oldest is playing 60 baseball games this year – youngest playing also – add in all the other end of the year stuff with a dance recital in there too and it’s been CRAZY! have a great weekend!

Vera - My three year old boy (who happened to be naked at the time) saw the chickens in the car and said “MOMMY! Get my clothes on! I want to go to that family’s house!” 🙂

colleen - Such a great post… I love the part about keeping expectations low on mother’s day so you can enjoy it. Congrats to your oldest graduating from high school.. how wonderful that she let you announce it on the blog… 12 years of school done.. not a small achievement for her or for you.
Love your spirit as well as your ability to “roll” with whatever life gives you!
Colleen

Barb - Hi Meg, could you please tell me what translation of the Bible you have? Thanks for the beautiful post! Barb

Tiffany - I love that you and your family love those chickens so much! I’m so glad you had a nice Mother’s Day too. Congratulations to Lauren! What a beautiful young woman (must take after her mama!).
Hubby is gone on a 4-wheeling weekend, so I’ve got the single parent gig going on. I hope to plant our flowers tomorrow, and hit up the Children’s Museum Sunday. Not nearly as exciting as your weekend, but I love my family time!
I hope you enjoy yours this weekend too!

Kori - Animal teeth always crack me up!
I had lunch with my son weekly if not a couple times a week when he was younger and loved it…it was a great way (better than volunteering in class, I think) to meet more of his friends and see what *really* goes on at lunch – both with the kids and the playground staff. He loved when I got there to stay and hated when I tried to make it a ‘going out’ lunch…he wanted to eat and then be able to run off to play, not be stuck with me in a car!!
Hope you have time to catch your breath in the coming days…
🙂

Michelle from Australia - My Dad has shingles 🙁 My daughter who has been vaccinated against chicken pox got them this week. Blisters, itchiness and one upset girl who couldn’t go to school. My son goes into hospital next Monday for surgery. We asked him what he wanted for a treat dinner the night before his operation. He said SMORES. We had them at Yosemite NP last year. So I went out and got ingredients as close to SMORES as you could find in Australia. And we are all ready for SMORES tonight and tomorrow. Here’s hoping we get through next week with God’s help and grace.

Tiffany - My son just turned 17, i am mentally wigging out about graduation next year. Dogs are smart! Waffle had got your #. Please photograph the Chicken Run, hilarious. Its so hard not to vent with your girls, but God is right there is a dofference between venting and back-biting, sigggh. How did none of your kids get your eyes? They are striking! Enjoy your weekend, im off to have another malibu-bu. TGIF.

Jennifer - Love all your pictures…and that Waffle….he is a hoot! 🙂

Sara Torbett - What a lovely post! The chicken pictures and Waffle’s close-up made me laugh :). Congrats to Lauren! I imagine it’s a bittersweet time for you…..I hope all your graduation festivities are lovely (I’d be bawling like a baby…..I’m tearing up at the thought even and I still have two tiny babies! Oh dear)
Your flowers are gorgeous…and who has time for massive flowerbeds when there are crafts to make and meals to cook? We don’t-we use flower pots too. 🙂 This weekend we’re getting some family pics made..wish me luck (two babies under two)

Kerry @ Made For Real - That looks like our dog. Exactly! Love the potted plants and love having an older set and younger set of kids as well : )

Sarah{Handbags*N*Pigtails} - WOW, Congratulations Lauren! Seriously where does the time go?! My oldest(9) is at a two day sleepover and Im getting ready to take my baby girl(ahem…7) to gymnastics. I remember the days of crying in the church nursery thinking “I’m NEVER gonna sit in another adult service ever again…I’ll be here FOREVER!!!” I blinked and those days are gone. But yet theres so much great stuff to look forward to also.
Have a wonderful weekend! Keep the tissues close by.

Amy - I try to eat with my boys at least once a month at school. Of course, little sister is usually with me. But they love that. One likes to go off campus, one likes to have it brought to him and eat in the cafeteria. Hilarious. But it’s always fun. Of course, despite saying I’d shoot for once a month, I think this second semester I did it twice. And that includes this week. {ouch} By the way, love that pic of Lauren. She’s beautiful!!!

Hanny Norton-van der Valk - congratulations to Lauren, well done. Here in the UK it is still quite cold and I.ve just put the heating on to warm it up a bit. Also still having a lot of rain. We were hoping to go sailing tomorrow, but the winds will be too strong, so I probably will do a bit of gardening. I hope your weather is a lot better. Have a lovely time Sunday, you must be so proud of your daughter.

amy jupin - i’m totally tripping that lauren is graduating.
waffle is a dork and i love him.
annie looks like she’s in middle school and i want it all to stop.
the growing, the maturing, the time slipping by so quickly.
love you meg.

sally - Awww, your daughter is so beautiful!! Congrats to her and so happy we got to see her. 😉 I’m sure you are proud! I just read depressing news in the local newspaper about the economy and I came here and now I am smiling and Happy!! That is why I LOVE your blog…I leave happy!! 🙂

Shelly Massey - My happy moment this week was when the canvas of your wet watercolors photo arrived here! HAPPY DAY! I smile every time I walk by it. Thank you!

Janelle - I adore your messy kitchen picture. Wish more people would share those 😉

Heather Simnitt - My eye caught “basketball.” Basketball? In May? Really? It’s all baseball and soccer around here now. And recitals – oh the recitals! Last week piano, this week ballet. After that it’s all planning for vacay. It’s T-11 days! So READY!!!

shar y - Oh, how I cried when my first child graduated. Happy and sad all at the same time.
And, the chickens in the Barbie car, funniest thing I have seen all week. What a hoot!
thanks!

Nancy - I love the honesty of your kitchen picture. I have been reading your blog forever but I am not much of a commenter. My youngest is graduating from HS and I have a grad party pin board – http://pinterest.com/nancyhts/graduation/
Enjoy!

Cathy - Hey..hey what are you doing taking pictures of MY kitchen.. he he.. our kitchen always looks like that.. I have to stop ask myself, “why when I fill the dishwasher are there still dishes left that won’t fit”

Jessica - High school graduation, how exciting!!! Congrats to Lauren!

Tonya - Congrates to you and your daughter. my oldest son just graduated from College. Take tissue with you to the ceramony!!!

IMG_0994-2
it has been reeeeally cold here but then suddenly there will be a 65 degree afternoon here and there.
this was one of those.
sometimes you have to rush out and soak up as much of it as you can.
(squeezing that inbetween laundry and dinner prep and everything else)
IMG_0996-3

IMG_1005-5
talby went out just as the sun was setting and shouted for me to come see her flip she has perfected.
she has worked for years on it!
woo-hoo!!
IMG_1006-6
as soon as the trampoline springs start squeaking the neighbor dogs show up in our yard.
they love my little girls.

talby pretends she has a ball and they wait and wait for her to throw it.
she and annie play with them a LOT!

Flower Patch Farmgirl - Better late than never. 😉
Praying for you!!!!

nomart5 - Has anyone bought stoves in Olathe, CO? I really want to buy one, but I don’t know where to go. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Laura Mastropaolo - Hello Meg! My name is Laura, and I have enjoyed your blog for several years.
I want to thank you for your support of Haiti! You see, my husband and I are the adoptive parents of an awesome Haitian boy. He was a restavek (child slave) until age 3 or 4 (no one knows exactly how old our son is…) – when a missionary saw him being auctioned at the slave market. She did the only thing she could think of to save him – SHE BOUGHT HIM FOR $60! Then, our son lived in an orphanage in P-a-P for 4 years until he was able to join our family on December 29, 2005.
May I ask where in Haiti you are traveling? In particular – will you be in Port-au-Prince for any extended period?
Like many others, our community of Haitian adoptive families was heart-broken by the catastrophic earthquake of 2 years ago. You see, most Haitian children in orphanages are not “orphans” in the sense we understand. In many cases, their families released them to the orphanage because they cannot care for them. Thus, many of our children have family in Haiti that we have been unable to find proof of life since the catastrophe.
If you will be in P-a-P, could circulate several names for our family in the off chance that someone you are networking with would have any word?
Our son’s Haitian name is Castera Charles. His Haitian father in Gerard Charles, Haitian mother is Michlene, older brother (approx. 22 years old) Emmanuel Charles, younger sisters – Alexandra, Geralda, and Juanna. The girls would now be between the ages of 8-12.
I know this seems such a strange request – but word-of-mouth is the only way we will ever be able to find if they survived. Through just such a connection, we have been able to find his baby sister, Nika. (If you ever want to hear that story of God at work – I would love to share at some time!) If you or any of your readers have any questions, please feel free to email me at: laura.mastropaolo@gmail.com
Thank you and Bless you…
Laura

Flower Patch Farmgirl - Tomorrow is pay day. That’s what I’m saying. 🙂
When are you leaving for your trip? Are you already gone? Yes, these are rhetorical questions.
I will be praying!

Lisa - So very excited for you to go on this trip! Will be praying for safety. And these pics are beautiful. 🙂

Nikki Gamon - I am feeling down tonight after hearing some sad news. I read your post and donated a stove as an act of hope tonight. Thank you for all you share on your blog Meg and thank you for giving me this opportunity.

Tracy Fisher - I am very proud of you and your adventure. Blessings as you travel. -tracy

Lisa M. - Girl, why are you running in 17 degree weather when you are having 65 degree afternoons?? 🙂
Awesome pics of the dogs.

Tiffany - Amazing pictures. Talented Talby. Cute dogs. Awesome you. Such a good mom… providing for your family even while you’ll be gone. I love hearing the garage door open too, telling me my hubby is home. Famiy together is the best. Thoughts and prayers are with you as you prepare for this adventure!

Terrie - Love how you make me feel like a Super Star…
said in my best SNL Mary Katherine Gallagher voice…
of course, complete with actions!!
I’m loving those warmer days!
Just filled my freezer with meals last Saturday…
love coming home to a home-cooked meal during tax season…
especially when I hadn’t planned on working full time! LOL!!
Hugs to you on the loss of your grandma…and have a great time in Haiti!!!
Take LOTS of pictures!! 🙂

Lennie Jackson - I will pray for safe travels for you. I am sure you are emotional right now. It’s a big deal!!! Enjoy it and soak it up then come home and tell us all about it!

Danielle F. - Prayers for a SAFE trip! 🙂

Sarah - The story about the dogs is adorable. Fun that they come to visit. They’re super cute. Great cause with the stoves too! Excited to make a difference.

Kari - And I posted it on my business Facebook page so hopefully you will get some more purchases 🙂

Kari - I just bought a stove – what a great cause!

kate - my girls love doing flips on the trampoline too! my oldest does backflips now… if only she could do them on the ground for cheerleading though!

Alicia @ La Famille - cute puppies 🙂 i think you need a couple of your own!

Trysha - Nice neighbor dogs are the best. The joy of playing with a dog with none of the clean up. Our dogs would never allow another dog to play with their boys…Waffle must be tolerant. 🙂

sunny sunday.

craft weekend went well..fun group of ladies!
we added in a dairy farm visit on saturday.
my friend kerry had a sale out out her farm and we took the craft girls out there for lunch & shopping.
and a bonus was getting to see the cows up close too.

i came home sunday afternoon from Craft Weekend and it was absolutely PERFECT outside.
i watched my girls jumping on the trampoline and could not resist pulling out my camera with that gorgeous light pouring in through the yellow trees.

Lisa M. - Yes, I know you told us this just recently, but I cannot find the post. Sorry…

Lisa M. - Hi Meg, I know you just told us this in a recent post, but what is the camera lens you use most of the time? I am looking into buying a new lens and I’m having a hard time deciding.
Thanks for your help!

tara - had a marriage retreat this weekend….wonderful getaway with just my man.
your girls are looking so much older, especially Talby.
the one of them laying together and smiling real big is a keeper….those moments where they are happy to be next to each other and smiling don’t always happen at our house these days..(12 and 10 year old boys) …maybe that’s why I’d treasure that picture.

Kate - Oh Meg – they are so beautiful! Great pictures. Um, and sorry about the poo. That is all.

Flower Patch Farmgirl - Now I miss our hopper. That’s what the Amish folk around here call them, Hoppers. (An Amish guy once patched our hopper top.) ha

I missed my kids all weekend and worked on a quilt that is SO over-the-top outside of my skill set…yikes. I’ll be shocked if I can pull it off!
Thanks for sharing…it was a smiley moment for moi!

dee - Your girls look so blissfully happy.love the pictures-love dee x

Tracy Fisher - The photos of your girls are precious. -tracy

Sandy - Stop! I can’t take it anymore! Annie is growing up FAR TOO FAST! And when did Talby’s hair get so long?! I must not have noticed because she probably had it pulled up all summer. What beautiful and loving children you have! …says a lot for their parents! Blessings to you & Craig!

jackie grandy - I love the shots of the girls Meg! They look like they’re kindred spirits, so happy and free. We biked tons this weekend as a family, and I just have to say that it made me so happy. The weather was gorgeous here as well and we made sure we got outside and enjoyed it. We purchased headlights for our bikes and biked to dinner and then biked around the neighborhood in the dark enjoying all the Halloween decorations. It was brisk, but so fun!
Happy Monday!
BTW, I am saying “for reals” all the time now and the kids and they keep rolling their eyes at me!
Jackie

Christy K - Love, love, LOVE these photos Meg! Seeing all that beautiful sunshine made my heart so happy… and your girls! My goodness! They are getting so big and look so mature now… wow! Valerie @ Chateau A La Mode - Love the pictures of your girlies and the cow poop thing is why I don’t enjoy nature that much 😉

domesticali - Your sweet girls are really growing up all of a sudden. Beautiful pictures.

seriously sassy mama - The pics remind me of my daughters. They are such good friends.

angela - I cannot get over how much Talby…or is the older one Annie? Anyway, the older of the two looks so grown-up now! Precious girls! I need to go get myself on that craft weekend list!

lindsay - this is why i read your blog – cows, beautiful pictures, cheesecake, family, gratitude. and the picture of them looking at each other, i die, it’s so sweet.

Angela - Beautiful pics, Talby looks a bit retro with her jeans and sneaks, so fun! Had to post re: the cow poop- I just started doing night milking at a dairy barn (way up in Canada, woo!) and let me tell you I have had my fair share of poop in the hair, on my face, down my shirt, you get the picture… My kids say I stink and I actually smell up the whole room when I get home from work, LOL! I have to admit, this may be gross, but I actually kinda like the smell! Yikes!!

Lisa M. - Your girls are beautiful. They seem to really have fun together and enjoy one another. Beautiful pics too!

Jodi - i am pretty much in LOVE with these photos. seriously what a perfect combo of sisters and lighting! awesome!

Shannon - The girls are looking so much older!
Hubby and I had a great weekend without kids but I’m happy to be back home just wishing I could stay in bed all day today and sleep!

Dani - I had the most amazing weekend! My husband watched the kids so I could attend the Scott Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk! I’m a beginner at photography, but I had the most fun!
Your precious girls are just so beautiful!!

Shannon B. - I love how much they love each other and how much it shows! Precious! Glad you were able to have a nice relaxing evening with the family, not so much about the cow poop! Haha!
And I’m totally making the cheesecake this week…in my apron!

beki - How funny, I had to pull out my camers for some golden light trampoline photos of my kids this weekend, too! Annie is looking so grown up these days. Where does the time go?

Kathryn Goertzen - so . . . my friend and I (both from Nebraska) were in town this weekend for the festivities at the college. At 11:30 p.m. Saturday night as we were driving from our hotel to Druber’s for donuts we saw the Craft House all lit up. Seriously considered dropping in. Would that have been o.k.? Would that have freaked you out? Have you ever considered taking your craft girls to Druber’s in the middle of the night. Fresh deep fried and frosted at midnight . . . yummy!

sara @ it's good to be queen - gorgeous girls. gorgeous photos. gorgeous light. happy monday, meg.

Jen - Beautiful girls, awesome pictures – happy all around! Talby and Annie are getting so big! I’m glad you had such a wonderful craft and family weekend, Meg.

Kristin S - I love that they are not too big in their britches (we stay weird things like that in the South) to be silly on the trampoline. Proof of good parents!
My mom’s visiting from Colorado and is in major home project mode. She won’t sit still!

Megan - Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous. Your photos fuel my DEEP DEEP desire for a 24-70. 🙂

Trish - some of these need to be on a canvas! BIG… like the one of annie and talby together… sisterly love, just the sweetest!
i want to put my name on craftweekend list, but need to wait until the little baby doesn’t need me, if ya know what i mean 🙂
left over cheesecake would make be very grateful too 🙂
i probably would have dunk my head in hand sanitizer if i found cow poop in my hair 🙂 glad you survived!

cluck.

summer got SO hot that we quit going over to see the chickens.
it was just not fun to be outside for long…the grass was crunchy & dead.
it was just gross by the end of summer.
now that it has cooled off we strolled over with old bread and said hello.
IMG_7431-2

IMG_7434-3

IMG_7433-1
chickens move really fast…

IMG_7451-2
it is actually really hard to catch the brown ones….way to go talby.
🙂

IMG_7414-1

IMG_7424-1
we got some free eggs because annie said "CAN WE HAVE THESE EGGS FOR FREEEEEEEEE???"
people have a hard time saying no to annie.

IMG_7453-4
she was able to catch three of the orangey ones.
she would pet their backs and say "ahhh….do you like this massage?"
but i wish you could hear the way she says massage…. it's like Ma-shaaaug…it's so cute.

i am still thinking about getting our own chickens.
spring time?
isn't that when farm people do stuff like that?
baby chicks and all that?

at least i have a few months to make some decisions.
we need to research what kinds we would want.
(by WE i mean me and my little girls only…no one else would want to be a part of the chicken adventure)

and we would need some good names of course.

SIDE NOTE:

i have very rarely even bought halloween costumes…
and if i did it was on clearance after halloween a size up for the next year.
well….i just ordered my girls costumes from walmart.
i didn't even go in the store.
they have free shipping.
i feel like i have given up in some way… BLAaaaaH.
but you gotta do what works and this year THIS works.
i am feeling like it was the easiest way to go… no kids begging for other stuff at the store…no pouting.
and i only have to get a few costumes instead of four or five now since my kids are older now so buying didn't seem so painful this time.

what do you do?
do you buy from the store?  do you make your own? do you use the old ones you have already?

Lori - This is totally changing the subject but over a year ago I learned about the musician Marcia Ball on this site. I am so excited that she is going to be performing this Saturday in Newton,KS. I wonder if Meg had anything to do with her coming to this area??? If so, Thank you!!!

Juanita Johnson - We’ve had a variety of chicken breeds over the years, and my favorite breed is the Barred Rock. They have black and white stripes and are very calm and will follow you around like a shadow, and easy to catch. They are good layers, too, nice brown eggs. Ameraucana’s have beautiful blue/green eggs, but are a bit more suspicious of people and other animals. A rooster is good to have if the chickens will free-range, but they will terrorize anything and everyone that enters their ‘zone of patrol’. Roosters have made for lots of funny memories for my girls, but they still tell the stories with a tremble in their voice! NEVER more than one rooster, just sayin’. Chickens do something for the soul, you should totally get some in the spring, but order from a hatchery or get from a mom and pop feed store, that will order for you. Can’t wait to hear the adventures!

Elizabeth - Oh if only you lived next door to me. Then your lil Annie could have all the fresh eggs her lil heart desired 🙂
I highly recommend getting chickens if you can. We currently have 30+. We are now getting 25+ eggs A.DAY.
We are a family of four for crying out loud…lol. But like someone else mentioned above, Tractor Supply sells pullets in the spring. My hubby may have went nuts 🙂
Now onto costumes: New ones. Every year. Some our handmade and some our bought. I tend to like the handmade best and that’s usually what my costume is. Yes, the hubs and I dress up every year from my mom’s annual Adult Halloween Party. This year we are Mr. & Mrs. Howell from Gilligan’s Island. My favorite to date is when I was JB Fletcher from Murder She Wrote and he was Columbo 🙂

Prairie Jenn - Yay for chickens! You can get pullets at Tractor Supply Company in the spring (March and April) if you have one around there. That way you are sure to get chicks that are female…plus you can get just a few to start. The red sex link hens (which are actually orange-ish) are good layers that give those pretty brown eggs. Chickens are so easy, and my girls think they are the best pets;)
Costumes here are usually homemade, but last year we found a tiny local costume shop where this older lady creates costumes from things she finds at yard sales and thrift stores:) She comes up with some amazing creations and themes! Last year, we left with a pirate costume for me, a gypsy costume for my oldest, and a fifties costume for my youngest. Too fun!

Jennifer F. - I mix it up with costumes. Before I really used my sewing machine, I bought the costumes. Once I got the sewing bug, though, I have made all of them. Snow White and a Dwarf, Butterfly, etc. This year, my son wants to be Iron Man and we will buy it. My daughter will be a peacock and I am making it. She said, “Mom, I want YOU to make it, because you make the BEST clothes!”. I have about 5 seconds of that attitude left and I am going to soak it all up. ( : I love making the costumes, but am not going to stress over it. It isn’t worth it for one hour, half of which is dark.
I have bought costumes after Halloween and given them to my kids as Christmas presents for dress-up. They loved it and play with them all of the time.

Kelly - My sil and I were just talking about the costume thing. I really thought I would be a make the costumes get all creative kind of mom. I loved to help make my Halloween costumes growing up and my mom kindly obliged. I wanted to be all sorts of unique things like an African princess, etc. We would just use things we had on hand, borrow things from my grandma, sometimes buy a thing or two and just make the costumes up.
My son’s first Halloween I bought cheap jeans and an “ugly” plaid shirt at a kids’ consignment sale and then used yarn and raffia and made him a scarecrow. I had a lot of fun with it. Last year we were walking through Marshall’s and there was an adorable monkey costume for (gasp) $20 and he really liked monkeys at the time and I tried it on him and it was all over, we were getting it.
This year he really doesn’t even know what dressing up is still and I think I’ll just have him wear the monkey costume again.
I think I may get more into it when my kids can request to be certain things but right now it feels like a lot of effort for one night for what? Praise for my cute costume making skills? I need to not be addicted to that kind of praise and I know my tendency to care to much so I feel like the pendulum has kind of swung the other way.
It’s good for now and works for us for now. We’ll see what the future brings. Kelly

vonda - We have had chickens for the past 5 years and we LOVE them. McMurray Hatchery is the best. You can go to their website, pick out your baby chicks, and pick a date that you want them sent to you and go to the post office and pick them up. (We buy mostly all girls because roosters can get mean). One breed we love are the Ameraucana’s. They lay big blue eggs!!!!!

Ani G W - This year will be my first year making a costume. I am making my 4 year a raccoon costume because I couldn’t find a kid’s grey raccoon costume! 🙂 So this year my 4 year old will be wearing a homemade costume, my 9 year old will be wearing one he already had (his choice) and my 2 year old will be wearing a new bought costume (which I bought online).

juli - we live in Memphis TN… right in the heart of the city and we have 3 chickens… all of them are the Buff Orpington’s… the “easy” to catch ones ;)…we got them in June as matureish chicks… and they laid their first eggs in August..the VERY LAST day of AUgust. It was the longest 2 months that we had to wait to get eggs…however we used that time to really get to know our pets… Henrietta, Cackle & Yolkie…. They are very tame and come to us to eat out of our hands… they are even comfortable around our 3 dogs. I think that you will be most pleased with chickens as pets… and in return they will give you the BEST eggs you have ever had. ;} Also… we built our coop using left over wood from the home depot & lowes stores SPRING GARDEN shipments… used pallets and stuff like that… got OOPS paint and created our pallet from there. We love our chickens… and if you are ever in town… please stop by. 🙂

Heather - It varies from year to year here. Some years I make them. Some years I buy at full price. Some years I find them second hand. And I’m okay with that.
One Halloween I was totally stressed about the pumpkin carving. I was in the habit of getting five or six and intricately stencil carving all of them. I was tired that year and bitchy, to be honest, and regretting getting so many.
My husband and kids asked if they could do them. I went into full panic. They’ll look like heck, they won’t be at all photoshoot ready, what would Martha think? Then I thought, if I don’t want to do them, why make myself. And I let go. And they did them. And they were beautifully imperfect pumpkins. And they had FUN (pumpkin carving with me is NOT fun, I’m far too intense about it). I got to cross something off my list.
So, the way I’d look at this is that you might have spent more than normal BUT it’s done weeks ahead of time. The kids are happy. It’s crossed off your list.
It’s all good.

Andrea - I made a lot of the girls costumes when they were small – using a Wal-mart cheapy sweat pants/shirt as a base (don’t think I sewed princess dresses or anything because I can’t even hem straight). As they got older they built their own – the middle one was “Flo” from the Progressive commercials last year and that was all white clothes (Goodwill) and her hair done the same as Flo, bright red lipstick. I LOVE those kinds of costumes.
My little boy wants storebought, TV/comic character costumes. By this third kid I’m tired, I set a price limit, I buy online.

Valerie @ Chateau A La Mode - I actually made costumes for my oldest two for a couple of years and since then we always bought costumes. Of course my youngest reminds me that I never made her a costume…ouch! No more costumes now though cuz they are older.
Good luck on the big chicken adventure. Can’t wait to follow that. I toy with the idea of having chickens too. I think I would like that, fresh eggs and all, but chickens are a little creepy. I’m not sure I really want to commit to raising chickens. I have a feeling I’d be a little like Lucy when she raises chickens on I Love Lucy 🙂

Tiffany - I’m excited for your chicken adventure! I bet you’ll love it. I always loved harvesting the eggs from my parents’ chickens as a kid. Now it’s fun getting my kids involved when we visit Grandma and Papa’s place. For Halloween this year my kids are going as the princess and the frog. My 4 year old daughter’s idea… She has plenty of princess stuff, so no purchases needed there. I’m just mixing green clothing for my boy, and will be making him a green hat with eyes on top. That’s this weekend’s project!

Aby - My niece used to have a chicken named Percy. I have always LOVED that name for a chicken!! lol

tiffany gardner - So funny. Sure… I let my kids pick who they want to be… THE YEAR BEFORE ON MAJOR CLEARANCE! Seriously.. go there two weeks after halloween and say … whatever you would like. They have never seemed to mind!

Routhie - I buy my girls costumes every year because they play with them until they don’t fit and the older girl’s costume is happily accepted (for now) as a hand-me-down to our younger girl. We don’t always buy the pre-packaged costumes, though. We have a great church thrift store nearby to sift through for inspiration and, sometimes, we are even able to pull something together from what we’ve already got. It’s our yearly indulgence, along with Christmas dresses. 🙂

Pat - THRIFT STORE EVERYBODY!!!!

jen - i just discovered that our neighbour has chickens! i couldn’t figure out what the noise was and he other day i went peeking through the hedge and saw them!! i was hearing the clucking. i would love to get chickens but i am terribly nervous around birds so i don’t know if it would work.
for costumes we have lucked out on great deals {my mom picked up every disney princess dress for $5 each one year – those have been in rotation for 4 years} last year my daughter wanted to be the Bride of Frankenstein and after everything i went through it would have been cheaper to buy something :s. this year i bought some at costco. i have too many other things i want to make – like decorations – that they were happy with them – ariel & iron man. suits me fine!! check!

Kim - Whatever works is right, my daughter is 4 this year and I asked her what she wanted to be, this was our conversation:
“What do you want to be for Halloween?”
“A Pig.”
“Like last year, you want to be Olivia again?”
“Yes, I like Pigs.”
“Ok!”
My thoughts, YES!!!!! I dont have to do anything for this years costume because the other ones still fits her!!!
She dresses up ALOT, we have a whole corner of her room full of dress up clothing, but the one thing she has not dressed up as all year is a pig. I guess everything else is just to “everyday” for her. 🙂

stephanie - Oh! We moved to this subdivision and they said we couldn’t keep chickens. I am thinking about doing it anyway. 😛 My kids and I want them so bad! They like Buff Orpingtons and I like Copper Marans. Beautiful eggs!

shelly - check out http://www.mypetchicken.com a couple of my friends have chickens and they live in town..total golf course subdivision in the front, chicken coop in the back lol. One of them has a hen that lays the prettiest pale blue-green eggs (they’re my fav ;)) I know that one of them got their chicks from 4H kids too.

Lisa - I use to buy new costumes but once we added child 3 and 4 it got too expensive. Now I buy clearance after Halloween or they have to figure out a costume from what we have. We go to goodwill sometimes too. And if they need an accessory for 5$ or less I might help with that. My 11yr old spent her own money to buy what she wanted for this year! Every years been a little different. 🙂

Lisa - The colors of that chicken against Talby’s coat…my favorite combo! Great photos. My kids are wearing costumes I picked up at garage sales over the summer. Thankfully they were both thrilled with the things I brought home. I doubt it will work that way too much longer!

Rachel Spin - Miz Booshay has a picture on her blog today that you would really love. I thought of you immediately when I saw it. It’s the very first one. http://booshay.blogspot.com/2012/10/nest.html
Cute chickens! Cuter girls.

Lisa - Meg
What kind of personalities do chickens have (silly question?). Are they cuddly? Do they like Annie’s massage or being petted? I have no idea, but so many people seem to be getting chickens lately. Just curious.

Michelle Whitlow - I have made costumes & bought them. Last year I made my 2 older kids’ costumes. The 3 went as Alice in Wonderland, The Mad Hatter & the baby was the White Rabbit. I made the Alice costume, for my son I made the pants, found a jacket at a thrift shop, the hat & wig at a Halloween store & decorated with a scarf I made & made the big bow tie. For the baby I bought the rabbit ears but then bought a pink tutu & pink & white striped shirt at Target, easy peasy. I have pics on my old blog: http://meandmyscraps.blogspot.com/2011/11/halloween-in-new-town.html
This year I bought costumes…one of which was bought last on clearance. Love doing that! Usually I just do that for dress up clothes but it ended up working out well for the little one’s costume. My oldest is going to be an 80s girl (fun!) and my son is a werewolf. We’re going easy this year! The little one is going to be Dorothy from Wizard of Oz so I’m going to be the scarecrow (from some thrift store clothes) and I bought some fur to make a lion’s mane for my lab. And maybe I’ll make my hubby be the tin man 🙂

lauren - always homemade costumes….actually two days ago on msn.com they featured over 30 photos of costume ideas and a photo from my blog of our son as a penny was #4! freaky.
i hope you get chickens because we can’t. township ordinance or some-reason-or-other. but if i COULD get a variance to have the ordinance changed i would get a miniature horse 🙂
take care my yellow-boot-wearing blog friend!

Jennifer - A friend of mine has chickens and she named them all after the Desperate Housewives! So funny. Bree, Lynette, etc. :o)

Jenny B. - Love the cooler fall weather! I read a blog post recently that made me want to never have chickens. It had to do with a hen coop and a murderous raccoon. Yuck. Anyway… I always buy Halloween costumes at Walmart. It’s just too easy. And I kinda feel about Halloween the way you feel about Valentine’s Day. So, yeah. Easy is good. 🙂

mama lola - yum, fresh farm eggs! we are an egg free family now as my eldest is allergic, but i do love a good chicken n’ egg picture!
as for costumes… never buy new. always borrow from friends or buy second hand or on the clearance rack!

Lisa M. - This is my son’s eighth trick or treat and I have purchased every one of his costumes. Every year (aside from the first two or three) he has know exactly what he wants to be months ahead of time (lion, fireman, Navy Seal, Yoda…). And although a more creative, sewing-kinda mom would make the costumes herself, I choose to purchase. Otherwise, my child would go trick or treating in what he had on for school that day 🙂
Great pictures!

jackie grandy - Your photos of the chickens are awesome! I love how kids just blurt things out. They speak with their hearts and not always their minds, but I love it. We should remember as adults to do that more often, you never know what it could bring. My brother in-law is raising chickens and he lives in MN. He is so into it and he installed this tree branch for them to hang out on, I guess chickens love hanging on branches, go figure. Anyway the eggs that they produced, were the best eggs I have ever eaten. I would love to raise some chickens, but we don’t have a big enough yard.
We’re still undecided about Halloween costumes over here. We always buy part of the costume and then throw together the rest ourselves. My daughter is going to be the 10th doctor from Dr. Who, for any of you Dr. Who fans out there, you will know who that is. My son wants to be a ninja. He makes these organimi ninja stars out of paper all the time so that is where he got the idea. We haven’t gotten his costume yet, of course.
I don’t make costumes from scratch because I’m not the craftiest person (per my daughter). I wish I was better at sewing etc. Maybe I will just have to sign up for one of your craft weekends and learn a few things!
xoxo,
Jackie

Amber - If you decide to get them my offer to build you a coop is still on the table. I’m serious. My route to visit my brother and sister-in-law goes right past Marion.
My daughter is only 4 months old so Halloween costumes haven’t been an issue yet, but based on a blog post my friend Lindsey wrote (http://www.mom2momkc.com/?a=profile&u=19245&t=blog&blog_id=4886) I think buying them is a great option.

Lauren - I can’t even imagine the fun you’d have with chickens!!! So exciting!

Kate - Yes – You have to what works! That’s the rules.

Pamela Fitzgerald - Hi Meg,
I have 3 kids and I always am on the hunt for discounted costumes or something at the local thrift store. When I was growing up we made our costumes from things we had around the house…it was soo much fun. It is really expensive to buy costumes….I feel your pain!!…Pamela

Alice H - I am lucky that my mom has made a lot of my kids costumes. My favorites that she has made so far are: Jessie from Toy Story, Scarecrow and Dorothy, and Tin Man.
My daugther Emilee (13) was Jessie and Dorothy. She has also been a bee that was homemade as well.
My son Zack (12) has been a bat, Scarecrow, Bob the Builder, a magician, and Michael Jackson and they were all homemade too.
My youngest son (3) was a race car driver and Tin Man. Both homemade. This year he wants to be a baseball player this year and I am ordering his jersey off Etsy.

Leah - I’m with you on the costumes. I usually create something from scratch. Or I will buy costumes at resale and Goodwill stores. That’s how we found Cinderella last year. This year I told my daughter she can only wear one of the many dress-up outfits she has at home. And believe me, there is no shortage!

Dani - I hate to buy costumes! It seems like such a waste of money. I give my kids $5 and take them to the Dollar Tree. They buy what they need and can come up with some pretty awesome ideas. One year Tyler bought a bunch of gauze and went as a wreck. He used face paint to paint bruises on his face and a little blood coming from his mouth. I love to let my kids get creative!

Kelly Henderson - I made costumes with the first three kids… always. And then number four came along. Thrift stores became my go to Halloween costume place. Two years ago, I caved and bought the expensive costumes from the catalog costume for youngest child… I have been defeated now 🙂 This year the youngest (girl) wants to go as a Smore… planning to make a costume again with a large brown cardboard box and pillows. Hah! This should be interesting… don’t stress or feel like you’ve caved…it’s no biggie.

amanda - This is the first year I’ve ever bought a costume. I only bought for my youngest (2) because he wanted to be a power ranger and I didn’t have the energy to try and make that, so I got it at K-Mart. It was painfully expensive. My older two (6 and 11) are piecing together costumes from stuff we already own.

Wendy @ Ramblings from the Sunshine State - We usually get new babies in spring. Rhode Island Reds are great hens, and I love Araucanas with their blue eggs.

Terrie - First…LOVE those chickens!!
I just talked with my friends about all the costumes I used
to make for the kids.
I still have all of them…
maybe my grandone will wear them one day.
Have you seen the pic of Pinterest of the little boy
who is a shark on the beach?
I’d love to make that for the grandone!
And I say…you gotta do what works for you!
I do have an egg costume…would be pretty cute
while carrying one of those chickens!! 🙂

Michelle - I made Tate’s costume this year, she’s going to be a peacock and even I was slightly impressed with myself. It turned out much better than this non-sewing, only slightly crafty Mama thought. Finn wants to be Hulk and has ZERO interest in me making something for him, so we’ll buy that one.
So what are the girls going as?

Amy K. - I can’t believe I forgot Jacket Man, which I jokingly suggested the year my son couldn’t think what he wanted to be, and he went for it!

Dana - I would love to have chickens, but live in a suburb and they don’t allow it.
I’ve always bought Halloween costumes for my now 11 year old, but in the last few years Halloween has become less of a big deal. Since I have an 11 year old and 1 year old this year only bought the baby a costume. I’m also 4 months pregnant and this baby will probably wear hand me downs. I hope it’s a girl or we may have to die the hot pink zebra costume.

Amy K. - We spend a ton of time discussing, planning & making costumes here, with the occasional store-bought one thrown in as time requires! I’ve had a firefighter, a pig, Bob the builder and Thomas the train, an awesome robot that my husband stayed up nearly all night making, Perry & Doofenschmirtz, a dog-cyborg (I don’t get it either, and I made th costume!), and a lego guy.

got2havefaith - This year Halloween is even more of a pain. My daughter whined that she really, really wanted to be a zombie bride, then we go to the thift sore to “make” the costume before October 1st (way too early), now she whines some more that maybe she doesn’t want to be that anymore! Ugh. I will not buy another costume! {repeat} I put a $20 limit on costumes. Thankfully my 6 year old was super easy this year. But the 10 year old is killing with the whining to go to a big name Halloween store with over priced costumes.

Tanya - I would get chickens stat!… if I lived in the country 🙂
We change things up every year and I try not to go down the guilt road.
Sometimes my mom makes elaborate costumes for them, sometimes I buy them, sometimes we use older cousins’ ones. This year I bought one at the grocery story (a unicorn that’s super warm cause it’ll be COLD here) and my little guy wants to wear his racecar driver one from last year again.
The end 🙂

Anne - I vary from year to year. Last year I created and this year I purchased. I just have to do what my schedule allows and this year I just didn’t have time to get anything created.

April R - yes do get chickens 🙂 so we can vicariously have chickens too!
We don’t think about halloween much beforehand bc we don’t do witches, gore, scary stuff, etc and don’t feel comfortable endorsing that aspect of it all. It’s kinda hard to avoid but we don’t cruise the costume/Halloween section of a store much.
It’s just tough bc we do love kids and candy and dressin’ up and goofing around (and run-on sentences…). So usually what happens is we decide at the last minute – “oh yes, we would like to dress up and give/get candy with friends!” We make a mad dash around the house to find something to wear or go get something family friendly and under $20 at the store. Then I tell myself that next year I’ll just order online ahead of time and that’ll be so much better and then I put it off and we do it all over again. yeah CANDY! 🙂

Melinda - When our girls will little, we made costumes, usually out of sweats, felt, and yarn. Now they are 16, 13, and 10. Five years ago we got invited to a huge Halloween bash, given by some clients who are now friends (and they’ve spent a LOT of money with us). We feel a little obligated to do up the costumes in a big way, since they’ve done so much for us. It’s always a family theme. Two years we were a wild west saloon scene. This year we are all going to be pirates. But the best year was when we ALL went as witches (hubby included). He was an extremely disturbing female witch, and everyone loved it! Not usually a fan of Halloween, but this makes it fun for us.

Jen - I think I’d have a hard time saying no to Annie, too. We buy our girls’ costumes. I’d like to make them, but all the ones I suggest they don’t like. Princess Leia came from Target this year (I knew that’s what my 8-year-old wanted to be so I bought it on my own one wonderful day while I was at Target by myself), and I bought my 5-year-old daughter’s pirate costume online from Kohl’s. I love both of them. My daughters and the costumes. Their costumes are so stinkin’ cute this year.

Heather S. - I would totally have chickens if we could. We live in a neighborhood where everyone has a little land (like 3+ acres), but the rules state NO LIVESTOCK! Pooey!

Jennifer Davis Wood - My Kids begin to harass me for Halloween costumes about 1 month after Halloween LOL. I love it, I hate it… No full covering masks this year though, last year my son insisted on a morph suit. He fell into a ditch, don’t worry he was okay just a scratch and rip in the knee. I’ve promised a trip to party city this weekend. Why do I do these things and make these promises. Ugh. 🙂

elma - Oh do get chickens!!! We only got six and one rooster and we just love them. They are so fun to watch and the kids ge so excited each day to get the eggs!! Soooo much fun!!!

my brain….

i feel a little out of it.
i think it's all that is going on in my head preparing for Craft Weekend again.
lots of things to get ready.
all good…but just lots of things to remember.

i had six cups of coffee today.
for real.
that can't be good for me i am guessing.

IMG_7236-2

waffle.
he is such a goober.

IMG_7238-4

annie made a birthday card for me…she worked so hard.
IMG_7239-5
 :)

i got The Help and a blender as my gifts.
perfect gifts i think.
not kidding.

IMG_7222-1
some of you were asking to see the farm house and how i "decorated"

ha.

this is my kitchen.
IMG_7225-1
this is my kitchen when i make cheesecake.
i don't know why there is a lighter in the middle of that mess….

IMG_7229-3
this is the front room…the room you walk into when you come in the house.
it has a big set of windows that faces the yard on the right side of this picture.
(one of my kids "hung" that paper star on the curtain hardware months ago… it's not a decoration)

this is where i spend 95% of my time when i am home.
it gets the light.
but there are no screens on the windows or door so it has no air flow whatesoever….it's a bummer.

that door way in the back…goes to the garage.

IMG_7231-4
the family computer is off to the right.

the coat hooks are to the left…. i showed this picture way back in the summer.

and this is our bathroom.
that we ALL share.
there is another bathroom upstairs but none of the kids like it so they all use this one.
there is a tub behind the door…and the toilet.
it's no wider than the the doorway.  :)

do you see why i miss my bathtub?  my big private bath tub in my private grown ups only bathroom???

IMG_20121007_175608

this weekend i decided to reorganize my closet.
i took out everything and put it on my bed.
that is my bedroom….i am in my closet taking that photo.
there is nothing decorated in it either…just our furniture we got a long time ago….and some of my grandma's.
IMG_7406-1

and there is my reorganized cleaned out closet….
craig has one 2 feet to the right of mine…but his isn't paneled…i am the lucky one.

this house is a rental.
i like living here but do not feel a desire to decorate.
i may someday….but i feel uninspired at this point.
we are still adjusting to the smaller sized space that is not really "ours".
all of us.

this was on my bed last week after a monsterous tantrum by annie.
IMG_7237-3

she is pretty cute!

we have a no screen rule for the first hour home from school.
if you don't have homework you can read, draw or play.
she made this story….it's awesome.

IMG_7403-1

ok…i am dead tired.
i am going to bed.

goodnight bloggy people.

🙂

Allison - Does Meg ever reply to the comments? I remember asking a few questions in the past with no reply. I find it curious too as to why she moved. I’ve been reading her blog for years and then one day (after the fact) she said, oh yea, we moved lol Hopefully one day she’ll fill us in 🙂 I’m guessing they are using craft house as a form of income, kinda like a small business going on… crafting/bed and breakfast. Do what works for you Meg and what makes your family happy!

bathroom lighting fixtures - Nice post! I think your bathroom is a little overworked. I mean I’d change the counter tops into something smaller to conserve space, which I think is really important especially for a bathroom where we don’t have that much to start with.

Kelly - I really enjoy seeing these photos! Your white couches in the family room make it seem so “you”. But it’s not about the stuff it’s about where you live and there have been some really good and nice comments about all that. Kelly

Antonette - I looove your coffee table set up with the kids chairs. I remember you once said the coffee table is actually a dining table, but where did you get the little chairs?! I’m having a hard time finding any that small. Thanks!

Tracy Fisher - We ALL share a bathroom too. In our rambler. I thought it best only one bathroom looks disasterous (15 yr old girl with hair products everywhere and 11 yr old boy who has discovered AXE). The other bathroom is for guests. It stays pretty clean. There’s no great solution when you only have 2 bathrooms! haha. Love the letters you share. I keep mine. Especially the ones where they are apologizing. They are so cute. Have a piece of cheesecake for me! -tracy

elisa - Awww I love that you showed pics of the farmhouse. I know people don’t get it. And I love that you don’t care. 🙂
It’s all good.
Love you girly.

Alisa - This was nicely said Jenn! I think the people who don’t understand Meg’s decision are less questioning the fact that she downsized or went to the country or even got into a rental. Many people choose to or have to do this. I think the hard thing to understand is that the other house is still there and is a craft house. Most people who downsize don’t (or can’t) keep the large house. Anyway beautifully written Jenn.

Heidi Jo the Artist - I really love Annie’s card and how she added on to the grass to make it perfect for mom. 🙂 Cute farmhouse too! I love the turquoise box with the flip flops!

Susan - I don’t understand why your family lives in a rental with one bathroom while your beautiful home is reserved for crafting time and craft weekends? I may have missed the explanation, but it is confusing.

Jenn - If living in a real, undecorated, zero storage, one bathroom farmhouse means your incredible kids, and you, and your husband – have the best chance to become the best versions of yourselves…then throw the throw pillows out the window and put your feet up on the furniture and listen to the cows bellow across the field while you wait in line to use the bathroom and know that we LOVE you for that because that is life and living. Your house is awesome and it’s a privilege to have you share it with us. Family is the CAKE of the home, decorating is the sugary icing. There is no such thing as too much cake, but too much icing can ruin a perfectly good slice. Like you, our family decided to have our cake and eat it, too. We left the 4-bed 3-bath beautiful home with its walk in closets (man, I LOVED those closets), and we moved into a 2 bed, 1 bath, 112-year old farmhouse in the country. Sometimes I worry that a friend will come to visit and see this home and not understand and ask why we left our beautiful house. I hope that she finds her answer in the country lane that sees more foot traffic than cars, in the old barn with its soaring beams that arch over us like a cathedral, in the meadow where the butterflies and birds make the wildflowers dance, in the warmth of my neighbor’s eyes when she comes to leave tomatoes and hen’s eggs on my front porch, in the smell of the sweet country air. She won’t find it in my shoebox-sized closet, in my quirky farmhouse kitchen with its sloping floors and cracked countertops, in the walls which remain unpainted and bare. But come on in anyway, throw your feet on the furniture and your troubles on the floor. No pretense here, just some real living going on. And here – in this raw, undefined, unrefined space – we are becoming our most authentic selves and are finding joy in doing it. Dirty dishes and all. Thank you for sharing with us and trusting us to understand and to not judge. Love you, love your blog, love your house!

Shelly - We live in a rental too. We moved from CA to PA. I think it’s a permanent move but we just can’t quite bring ourselves to sell a CA property that is 2 miles from the beach and we have really nice tenants in it. Our first rental out here was smaller living space rooms and we all shared a bathroom upstairs – that drove me nuts. Then, 8 months later, we had to move again for weird reasons and this place is bigger with more bathrooms and living space but now my girls share a room and all our lights are very “dated.” But more outdoor space – it’ll look beautiful in the snow this winter. 🙂 Our basement floor actually has a shuffleboard game built into the laminate tiles. ha! When something breaks, we make a phone call – which is the best of all. 🙂

betsy - Don’t you just love when dogs curl up and do funny things with their legs for a nappy? It kills me!
🙂

denise@victory rd. - Annie is right, it would be funny if a dog could bowl.
Thanks for sharing a peak into your reality.

Kristen - I know you had a good reason for leaving your other house, but oh my goodness, I loved it!! It’s taken me a while to get used to the farmhouse. Actually, I’m still not! At the same time, I love the barn on your property and I imagine what you would do with the house if it were yours, considering what you did with the craft house. I love your blog and you seem like someone I could have coffee with 🙂
And you look amazingly similar to one of my cousins. Weird.

pattykaplan1@me.com - I am guessing you can’t paint anything in this rental? Small is doable, no problem, but it’s not being able to really do what you want with it because it’s a rent. I am guessing you moved there because of the school system? I am new to your blog and love your honesty. I hate it when people act like everything is peachy all the time, like WE can’t say we are having a shitty day or my kids are driving me crazy today…it doesn’t mean we don’t love and appreciate each other…it just means we are human! Thanks for sharing! By the way, I love the area where you hang your bags and take your shoes off!!

Kristin S - Emachin
I used to teach second grade and that just made me really miss phonetic spellers?!?!? I loved trying to decipher their daily homework.
Emachin
Makes perfect sense to me!

sara @ it's good to be queen - i love everything about this post. thanks for taking real pictures of real life…trash in the trash can and all. 🙂 LOVE it. we are going on two years in a rental and it is hard. i *choose* contentment a lot even though my heart longs for a forever home. thanks so much for this post.

Flower Patch Farmgirl - I’m having flashbacks from that pink bathroom tile! Man, we really missed out on the pink bathroom era. I’m glad you and I have been able to experience it.
We have the same after school rule. It grates me when Calvin comes home and starts asking to use the computer. ??? So the new rule is, if you even ask in the first hour, it’s a no-go all day. Mean.

traci - I understand wanting to live in the country and the only reason your comments about you can do without bug me is the fact that you are not really doing without. You are keeping TWO houses going which is expensive. One day, maybe you will decide to chat about why you have decided to keep two houses but for now I am perplexed.

Brianna - How long is your family planning to rent the farmhouse? Thanks for sharing your home with us!

beth - rather than trying to put how i feel into words, when the last commenter (jacci) has spelled it out so eloquently, i’ll just say, i echo her sentiments exactly. thanks for this very real post! : )

Jacci in Ohio - I just want you to know that when I saw that first full picture of the family room, I teared all up and said, under my breath, “Thank you, Megan” 🙂 Because this shows it. *This post* shows that you are you, no matter where you are. And it encourages us to remember that contentment is not found… as you reminded me months ago… in granite countertops. Joy and creativity and family can happen in wood paneling! And dated kitchens can still make yummo cheesecake 😀 Thank you so much for sharing these! You blessed me today.

mama lola - annie’s cursive is lovely! what a little lady!
your rental looks cozy for all of you! and, you’re quite the brave mama for having white furniture– wowza!

julia - I think people who don’t like to bowl are weird too! So funny!!1

Sarah - why did you move to the farm house?

Heather F. - I love the “sorry” note. My kids used to write those with pictures of themselves with big bubble tears coming out of their eyes. Precious.

colleen from alabama - Smiling. I live in a house from the early 1900’s. I love the closet pictures. My husband & I share a closet the size of yours. double hung on both sides, no shelf on top (he is 6’2″ & needs longer hanging space:) 1400 square feet gets tight at times but we always know where our kids are! We only have one shower. My oldest is a girl. 12. drama. one shower is getting stressful. one bathroom with good light is too. Thanks for keeping it real. That is sweet mercy & grace to the rest of the world who doesn’t have it all perfect either. like me. You are my kind of people.

Jennifer Davis Wood - as a Ps. When you guys lived in the big craft house I know it wasn’t perfect but it was lovely. It was also inspiring to me, I was never able to get my home as cute as yours, that’s okay! Seeing the farm house makes me feel like the energy is in the right place. Relaxed family. that’s what I’m all about right now in my life. I’m letting go of the perfectionism and concentrating on my family and traveling lightly through this world. I have a big’ol house and I miss my smaller home and it’s layout. The house I live in now is never fully cleaned and organized. We do our best and that will just have to do.

Emily M. - I love how real you are and I really like the charm of living in a home that’s not picture perfect. I like it because you can let your kids hang paper stars on the wall and it doesn’t mess up your design among other reasons. 🙂 I love your no screen rule… I’m going to have to use that someday when I have babies of my own. Hope your sleep cured your weird mood… i love the way Annie spelled weird. 🙂

Jennifer Davis Wood - OMGoodness! She is Totally Adorbs! Really funny, I can tell:) I have a couple of my own that are that way. It’s the best.

Krista - Don’t you love “kid writing”? Every time my girls ask me how to spell something, I tell them to write it the way they think it sounds. Love her cursive!

Tiffany - I agree with Stephanie, the book is awesome. Most books do…

Tiffany - oh goodness that annie is sweet. can you keep her this age?

Stephanie Talty - You are going to love the book, The Help it is amazing!
Have you seen the movie?
The movie does not compare to the book-enjoy!

amy cornwell - Ellie just started making her “y” just like Annie’s with the loop on the bottom…it’s so cute! Thanks for sharing the farm house with us 🙂 I think I missed something – didn’t realize it was a rental, are you still looking for something else to buy? I’m still envious all the same…someday I’ll live on a farm!

Alisa - I teach third grade! Wish I could have Annie in class. Such a neat kid. Love the writing!

Tracey - Annie’s notes inspire me to encourage the kids to write more to me and me back to them. Just so I can read them and save the awesomeness for later.
Love shaved Waffle. He makes me smile. 🙂
Do you have slipcovers on the front room furniture? If so, from where? I love the smoothness of yours. Mine always look like they are falling off.

Kate - Goodnight bloggy friend.

Jack - I keep all the little notes that my kids leave around for me. The ‘sorry’ ones are the best!

Rebekah Brummel - I lived in a house like that for years. . . . rental living wears on you 🙂

lisa currie-gurney - good night friend.
hugs from my heart

Tania K - The only reason I follow your blog is to see pictures of Waffle. For reals. LOL
How about a Craft weekend just for teachers? Count me in! I teach second grade.
I love how Annie writes.
