lightning bugs

they only come out in june.
they only come out for about 30 minutes each night…when the sun is just about set.
and they are so easy to catch.
IMG_5321
i hadn't even seen one this year but i told annie at lunch time "i think tonight we'll catch lightening bugs"
because it just felt like it was time.

and sure enough there they were.
and annie heard cicadas and said to talby "what is that noise that is so loud?!"
it is definitely summer.

this activity was on the summer list…..check!

annie was so excited and yelling "i got one!" every other minute.
talby got as many as she could at once before coming back to the jar.
sean was so into it last year but this year he just kept swimming….
growing up i guess.

it was time for bed.
i think they caught every one in our yard.

and then it was time to let them go.

IMG_5404

so we could catch them all again tomorrow night.

wednesday.

ok…today is better than the past two have been.
i feel relieved by that.
the pool is filling up.
the rain is gone.
the boys' nerf guns have been confiscated.
i think we are going to make it.

i received a shirt in the mail….and i love it.

IMG_1648
you can get them here at DOTS.
it is so soft and light.
i really really like it.
and i want to make cupcakes when i wear it.
i thought this one was cute too.

the porch is my favorite spot in the summer.
yesterday i set up memory on the bench/coffee table.
it took the entire top…and was hard to remember with such a long line of cards.

guess which set of matches is mine?
i told you it was hard for me.

———————————————————————————————————————-
some questions were asked about the summer list yesterday…i will clarify.

*WORLDS OF FUN is an amusement park with roller coasters in kansas city.
*PEPPERNUTS are little spice cookies…we love to eat them but i have never made them.
here is a website about them.
they are a mennonite thing…craig has mennonite
roots and so does our hometown.
*a BLOCK PARTY is a street party with our neighborhood (our block).
*the FROGGIE POOL is our public pool…it has a frog shaped slide.
*DEMO DERBY is the mud pit where cars crash into each other…that we pay money to watch!

we bought journals yesterday and the three youngest were so pumped about it.
they filled up the front already with stories and stickers.
very sweet.

beautiful sunday

IMG_1378
IMG_1418
everything here is green.
we had storms last week and it left everything happily watered.
i love to be outside in the green and the sun…especially at dusk.

my weekend was full of goodness.
old friends coming to visit, graduation parties, rainbow cake, vacation starting, funny movies…
good times.

IMG_1423
IMG_1462
i am writing this late in the night sunday because i don't want to forget it.
i loved today.
and tomorrow may not be as good.
or maybe it will?
either way…i want to remember this day.

nothing special happened.
just a really nice day.

lauren and craig played catch.
scott was shooting baskets.
lauren picked out a swimsuit that i could agree to…that is a big deal.
annie seemed extra happy today.

IMG_1521
my views in the hammock…with craiggers.
IMG_1541
we talked a lot today…he and i.
i love talking/planning/dreaming/laughing with him.
he took me out for a date on saturday…for reals.
it was just what i wanted to do.
and just who i wanted to be with.

IMG_1535
the kids jumped on the trampoline while the sprinklers ran.
and there was no fighting…miracle.
also earlier in the day annie and talby played a long time in their room together and i could hear
them giggling like crazy.
THAT is "good day" stuff!
(they jump off the rock wall to the trampoline…im fine with it.
don't comment on what a bad mom i am please…or share your trampoline horror stories…not today ok?)

IMG_1602
IMG_1567
oh how i love this dog.
it feels silly to me the amount of love that i feel towards an animal…but there is no denying it.
waff-eeee.

IMG_1548
craig picked up pizza for dinner.
ice creams cones before bed…in swim suits.
the kids went to sleep without a fight.

then craig, lauren and i watched the 2 hour season finale of LOST.
i wish it wasn't over.
i think it was brilliant television.
i will miss it.
that is an understatement.

craig tried to talk with me afterwards about the shows version of heaven…
i said it was too hard to talk about without crying.
not crying about the show (which i totally did) but crying thinking of what heaven will be like.
i was thinking about all the people who will be there that i know
and who are waiting to welcome me.

it is a lovely thought.

IMG_1410
today i thoroughly enjoyed being with my family.
it probably helped that we got away the night before for grown up time…to recharge.
we are better parents after we have been away.
everyone is like that right?

so that is what i wanted to remember.
good stuff today.

monday is summer here.
we will make the summer list….after we sleep in and i drink at least three cups of coffee.

from the archives….3

this was posted july 18, 2008.

the last baby piggies.

IMG_2962

craig's uncle and aunt told us this was the last round of baby pigs.

after 30 years they are going to be pig-free.

sad for us but so liberating for them.

since these are the last ones…we had to get out there!

so we called them up and invited ourselves over…last minute.

we gave them a 20 minute warning.

wasn't that polite of us?

IMG_4160

IMG_4162

if you hold them like this they don't squeal….seriously.
but i couldn't do it.
it just felt so funny.

IMG_4197

i set my camera down low and they kept creeping in on me.

IMG_4200

IMG_4203

it was cool but kind of creepy too.

IMG_4205

IMG_4176

"please craig…can we keep just one?"

earlier in the day we'd laughed about the thought of having a pig as a pet.

they get to be like 800 pounds…the size of a couch?

who wouldn't want one?

the babies are cute though.

if you had one all cleaned up and could teach it tricks?!

i need to join 4H and get all this stuff out of my system.

IMG_4189

annie was watching the mama…keeping track of her.

good plan.

she's gianormous.

IMG_4153

i will miss this janet!

what we will do without the baby pigs to visit?

maybe you can start raising puppies?

IMG_2997

I

ray is the biggest golden retriever in the world.

he has to be.

but such a sweet dog…if he doesn't knock you over by accident.

sean wanted to ride him.

ray could do it but we said no.

IMG_4229

IMG_4232

lots of corn this year – everywhere in kansas!

it is so pretty to see fields of it everywhere you go.

the kids got to pick some and check if it was ready.

IMG_4214

not quite yet.

janet took annie out to the garden and let her pick cucumbers.

she couldn't wait to eat them.

(the ONLY vegetable she eats??)

IMG_4237

i love this blurry picture (so many of these were blurry?)

fruit punch on her lip, dirty hair stuck to her face, cucumbers in her lap…

completely zonked out.

we love the farm.

we'll miss the pigs.

thanks gary and janet.

next time we will have a cookout so we can check that off our summer list.

but i promise we'll plan it more than 20 minutes in advance…

maybe even an hour?

before school…

we crammed a bunch of fun into the last few summer days.

the summer list had "go camping" and "tent camp"…my mistake.

and funny because we don't really do the camping thing.

not even in the yard…we don't have a fence, trains run all night long blowing their whistles,

we have interesting people walk by all night long…we don't camp in the yard.

so we set up camp in the living room!

IMG_0068

sean built the tent with me…loving every second of it.

IMG_0071

waffle was very nervous.

IMG_0079

they made popcorn and watched "space chimps" way past bedtime.

the boys didn't sleep there…but the girls did.

the boys wanted their own beds!

the girls stayed there all night.

IMG_0080

the day before school we had to go to the mall…yes…all of us….without craig.

and we survived.

we stopped by craig's office to bring him an ice cream cone.

we visited great grandma.

and i did not even get a starbucks!  (what is the matter with me?)

that night we had a back-to-school dinner celebration (for them…not me….ok…it was for me)

IMG_0088

make your own pizzas…

IMG_0090

and parfaits for dessert!

mmmmm….yummy.

IMG_0091

IMG_0099 IMG_0103

IMG_0104

after this…everyone took baths and we cuddled in bed reading books till everyone was fast asleep.

NOT.

ugh….i wish!

everyone was so nervous and excited that they were WACK-O at bedtime and were still up at 10:30!

there were spankings.

there was yelling.

blech.

not how i wanted the night before school to go…crap!

for awhile at bedtime i will be sitting on the couch outside their doors working on pictures

on the laptop until they fall asleep.

it's good for me and good for them to GET SOME SLEEP already!

Share on FacebookTweet this PostPin Images to PinterestBack to Top

i am tired.

for a few reasons…..

i don't go to bed early enough.

i sleep late.

i eat poorly.

i have five kids.

i stay up too late.

during our waking hours we have been busy.

and i am tired.

here is a little of what we've been doing…trying to finish off the summer list.

i think we are going to get almost everything.

IMG_8076

IMG_8089

painting in the driveway…

IMG_7855

IMG_7861

getting a treat from the ice cream truck….

IMG_8087

IMG_7870

tie dying t-shirts, tank tops and leggings.

IMG_7868

and 11 different kids have come over here this week already…seriously.

and i had a photo session everyday…two on wednesday.

i am ready for school to start.

i am the only one i know….but i am ready for a quiet house.

and only working on my own crafts.

soon.

soon.

soon.

and then i will complain to you about how much i miss sleeping in and hanging out all summer.
