talby’s lunch

i am not posting this to make you think i am great.

or to make you feel like a bad mom if you don't do this.

i am posting these because i started doing this after reading a post on emily's blog (little momma & co)

she had kept notes her dad had put in her lunchbox when she was a kid.

i saw them and thought "i should do that!"

so i started.

these are a few of talby's lunch box notes.

IMG_1191

she packs her own lunch most of the time…

i help her if she is running low on time.

then while she eats breakfast…if i have time….i make a silly little note.

( i wish you could see and hear the morning scene at our house before school…oh my..it's chaos)

she knows i make it but never looks until lunch…she likes the surprise.

IMG_1192

just scraps of paper with goofy pictures and notes.

IMG_1193

i have some guilt that i didn't do this for lauren's lunches.

but i guess with all those babies at home….i just couldn't get to it.

and that is a bummer to think about.

and i put one in sean's lunch once….

he got in the car after school and the first thing out of his mouth

"mom!  don't ever do that again! it was so embarrassing!"

i just cracked up.

i should have known.

scott rarely packed a lunch.

so i did it once.

he said it was funny.

so see…i am not that great…i completely overlooked one child and mortified another.

but i make one of them smile when she is away at school.

and it is so easy.

just passing an idea from one mom to another….

carissa... brown eyed fox - okay… i do it too… but my notes are NOTHING like yours!
you are WAY too creative!

Lisa - I love that! It ALMOST makes me able to tolerate the idea of sending my oldest to kindergarten next year. I can send a little piece of me with her…whether she wants it or not! LOL. Thanks for the idea!

Maria Masurat - I just dropped my daughter off for her second year of college in San Francisco (we live in St. Louis)and she told me how much she loved getting notes from me everyday when she was in grade school – I love your notes to your daughter – your making Great memories!

seleta - You’re so creative. And fun. What a cool mom. Way cool.
I’m trying this with my four tonight!

lauren - just a thought for your older daughter or your son who thought it was embarrassing…
with my teenaged sons, i will stick a post it note in their lunch with a favorite movie line, or a line from a show i know they like (usually it’s the office…)
it doesn’t say ‘love, mom’ or include x’s and o’s but they know it’s from me and they know i’m thinking of them. sometimes their friends get a kick out of it too.
love your blog.

Ann at the Handley Bungalow - Great idea, Meg! I put a note in my daughter’s lunch today but it wasn’t as cute as yours!! Your blog is so much fun to read. You are such a wonderful mom. I learn so much from you! Sincerely, Ann

Sarah - Same effects with my sons….sigh…

Jodi Brown - I adore your blog! I look at it often! I have never commented but just had to on this post! When I was a little girl my mom put notes in my lunch, not every day. Things to make me laugh or if she knew I was having a hard time. I always thought it was nice. My BF started getting notes in her lunch too and I didn’t think much of it. When we were much older she admitted that she was so jealous that she was making her own notes! You are definately making Talby feel special!

Mrs. Sitcom - Those notes are AWESOME! What a GREAT idea…and they all look like you spent hours on them — so creative and cute and beautiful. I’m going to file this idea away for when we have kidlets. What a fun, special tradition!

Allison - I remember the little notes my mom put into my lunchbox as a kid. made me feel so special. It was the favorite part of my day ๐Ÿ™‚

Beth - That is so cool, and your little drawings are so (I can’t think of a word that doesn’t make me sound like I’m stuck in the 70’s), ok COOL. Really. I put notes in my kids lunches once in awhile, but nothing like this. Very very special. A wonderful memory for Talby.

deb meyers - I love every bit of this post — especially your funny honesty!
My Annie (age 12) has a metal lunchbox. I put magnetic fridge poetry bits inside the lid (occasionally) and she drives herself nuts waiting to surprise herself with it at lunch.
She has taken to writing little notes and sticking them in my hub’s business trip suitcase : )
deb meyers

Angela - I thought about doing this for my son, but he’s three and can’t read yet. He just started preschool (Tu/Th, 9-2) last week, and I pack his lunch when he goes. I may put in a picture of a fire truck or something. But I can’t draw. So maybe I’ll just wait until he can read. LOL

Mary - How fun. I’ve decided there isn’t any guilt allowed when comparing what happens with the different kids. We do what we can to survive, and we love our kids in the best we know how at that moment in time. Your kids are lucky to have you for a mom. I’m going to try these notes in my daughter’s lunch.

Aby - Too cool. Mine aren’t that colorful or creative, but my girls (twins) started 2nd grade this morning and I’m proud to say that they have never taken their lunch that I didn’t include a note. They’re proud to say it too. It’s really special for them. In fact, Makinley told me this morning that I could stop putting notes in her lunch when she’s in high school… but not until then.

Trina McNeilly - I love putting notes in lunches… never thought of drawing.. that is great.. now only if I could draw… you are a great drawer…another new talent!!!! Thanks for sharing the idea! Happy week to you!

adrienneK - o cute! well the girls dont have school but my hubby brings his lunch to work and i leave him notes ๐Ÿ™‚ (he’s jsut practice for when the girls do have school and lunches)
xoxo
adrienne K

Emily - My blog is not private!
I’m still here!
http://www.littlemommaandcompany.blogspot.com

Becky @ Farmgirl Paints - My mom always did that for me too. She wrote me Roses are Red, Violets are blue poems:) I try to do this for my little one now. What a great way to let your child know how much you care. Trust me they will remember it and be grateful one day.

Rachel / cREaTe - i love it. my favorite was the one when it was YOUR birthday & you asked her to frost cupcakes with you! oh that melts my heart & gives me warm fuzzies. i think it’s so sweet to let kids know we think of them even when they think we’re NOT. ๐Ÿ™‚

Kylie - Meg-it touched my heart that you do this. My Mother did this for me as a kid, and at 30 years old, I can say that I have such great memories of opening my lunchbox in the cafeteria, and finding a little something special in there. It always seemed to make my sandwich taste a little better! I lost my sweet Mother 10 years ago, and it is things like the lunchbox notes that make my heart smile. Keep it up…..yours kids will cherish it.

Jen - I don’t do this regularly but occasionally and it’s always a hit. I just use a sharpie and write on the napkin! My kids are 17. 14. 12 and 10 and so far, they don’t mind. Hopefully someday they will look back on it fondly!
Enjoy these special memories!!

amy - I wrote little things on Maddy’s napkins last year for 1st grade. She starts 2nd grade on 9.1.09 & you have definately inspired me to kick it up a notch. I will have to get a silly joke book….now if I just knew how to doodle… ๐Ÿ™‚

misty - i think i must still be hormonal from having my daughter- or just a ball bag- either way- this made me cry- a good kind of cry though- this is so sweet and i can’t wait to be able to do this for my daughter when she goes to school in a few years- you really are an awesome mom.

Jaimie - I just started reading your blog.. stumbled upon it from a link on another.. and I must say, I love it. Your blog is one of few that really, really makes me smile and you managed to do it again today. : )

Jennifer - my mom did that for me and i saved tons of them. i always LOVED finding them in my lunch. she also put confetti in there from time to time. and sometimes she’d send me a pb & m&m sandwich. THAT was fun.

Secret Mom Thoughts - Love this idea. I wonder if it mortify or please my daughter.

J.B. Kinrich - I started putting a note in my first child’s lunch bag when she went off to middle school. The first were varients of “You can do this!” but quickly I ran out of ways to say the same thing. So I started putting in wonderful quotes I’d run across, from books, magazines, bumper stickers, whatever. The kids have kept every quote I gave them in special boxes. Now, three children and eight years later, the “lunchbox quotes” have moved out of paper bags and into daily emails. My kids still love getting them, even though they’re now 23, 20, and 16 years old.

purejoy - i used to write stupid (STUPID) jokes with a sharpie on my son’s sandwich bags. one would have the question, the other the (stupid) answer. groaners.
he and his friends loved it. the stupider the better.
this got him through middle school.
that and his spongebob lunchbox which sparked a friend getting a scooby doo, and another to get a dora the explorer.
i’m so glad all those guys were very comfortable in their zaniness.
now they’re all off to college.
and i don’t pack his lunch anymore.
sigh.
but i did every day until he graduated high school.
that’s a lot of stupid jokes!

Georgia - I remember in Infant school when i was about 6, i had notes in my lunchbox, and i remember thinking ‘ i want to go home’ it made me miss my mum .. lol
It was so special though seeing the note thinking ‘ooooooh whats this’
I did it for my boyfriend, but he didnt really say anything…. lol

Amy - I love your blog! I don’t have kids yet, but my husband and I are trying – and I absolutely love all of your ideas on your blog. I think it’s great how you encourage creativity and let you kids get messy and fun (that’s a compliment – by messy I mean it seem like you let them just go nuts and have a great time like kids should sometimes!). Please don’t stop with your great ideas! And – your photos are AWESOME. I used one of your sunflower pictures as my desktop pic because it’s just so beautiful.

Angi - I love this idea…I’m going to have to try it with my Lauren this year!!!

Jenna - My mom always put notes in my lunch. Not quite as visual as yours, but a great pick-me-up nonetheless. I wish I would have kept them. Now that I’ve graduated college and started working, I wish I would open my lunch in the breakroom and a note from mom would magically appear.

Joy - That is a WONDERFUL idea! I am all about the memories. Childhood is short, my girls are 38 and 30…I know!

lorel - Macy only brought her lunch to school every once in awhile, so I only wrote about 5 notes last year. But imagine my joy when I found a note SHE put in MY lunchbox one day! It said,”I love you mom. Have a great day. love Macy” in her best first grade handwriting.

Nancy - I love this…. I do this for my daughter, but not as often as I should nor as colorful/creative as yours. You have some great doodle skills. I like how you just wrote anything and that is what adds to the surprise. I am on it for this school year. THanks for the inspiration. You rock!

Kathy - I just started packing my teens lunch again, our school lunch program is hell. She puts a piece of paper or napkin out so I can write a note. She loves it wish I had kept them too.

jody - very cute!
i’ve put in a few notes, but it’s my husband that really does them well, and much more often. i get the chaos in the am—it never fails!

DreamGirlLisa - I just love this! Over the years I have occasionally put notes in my girls’ lunches. Always on birthdays and “just because” once in a while (wish I had done it more too). I recently posted on my blog about this, a very sweet story about my youngest and her note to me. If you have time, please read it ๐Ÿ™‚
http://dreamgirllisa-lovingthislife.blogspot.com/2009/08/blessed.html
Thanks for sharing!

Julie - My oldest son starts kindergarten this year and I’ve been wondering if its ‘okay’ to put notes in his lunch, being he is a boy. I loved it when my mom did….but then I am also a girl. LOL! I’m guessing that I’m probably going to have to just wait it out until my third (our only girl) gets to school. I’d rather not mortify my boys! ๐Ÿ˜‰

meaghan - you are such a good artist!!! who knew?! though i could have suspected ๐Ÿ˜‰ so i’m having my third boy…does that mean i’m off the hook for writing notes?

Dina - I love it! My oldest is starting Kindergarten on Monday. I am thinking of little ways to let her know I love her and that I am with her on this new journey. This is another good idea to implement. ๐Ÿ™‚

Dana M. - Hey….those look familiar! I think I have a stash of notes from you from high school that look a lot like these!! Except that our notes were passed in class and posted in eachothers lockers. They usually had drawings of us as cheerleaders and pics of what we would look like when we were “older”. I’ll have to get them out and show them to you sometime!!

Sarah - I do this last year (but only a few times). She collected them and kept them in the zipper part of her lunch box all year long.
too funny about you son saying, “don’t do it again” hahahaha

Melissa S - I did this a lot when my oldest was in Kindergarten. (2yrs ago). For some reason I didnโ€™t do it as much last year. A couple of weeks ago, getting ready for the new school year, I came across his Kindergarten lunch box. Imagine my surprise (and tears) when I found all of those notes in the bottom zipper part. Needless to say I have started it again this year. My middle is in Kindergarten this year, so I am going to do it for him too. I like the idea above for doing jokes for the older one.
BTW โ€“ your drawings are great. Any drawings I did were stick people!

Christy - Love the notes! I did notes (minus the art) for my son in kindergarten last yr using words he was learning, his reaction was much like Sean’s. ๐Ÿ™ So awesome that she enjoys them, I hope she saves them too. ๐Ÿ™‚

Regina - I’ve done this for our daughter a little in the past myself, but the one that remains on her bulletin board to this very day (in her bedroom) is the one (and only one) that her daddy wrote to her. ๐Ÿ™‚ No hurt feelings here…she just realizes that it’s EXTRA special when dad takes the time to do it. Same goes for camp notes, sleep-over notes, etc.
It’s the little things that make life grand! ๐Ÿ™‚

Meredith - My mom put notes in my lunch every day! Some of them were on napkins and got tossed, but I stashed others in my yearbook at the end of the year. People’s reactions to them changed throughout the years too. In elementary school, other kids didn’t seem to pay that much attention to my mom’s notes, but in middle school some kids teased me for it. By high school, many expressed their jealousy that my mom loved me enough to write me a note every day. I am so glad there are other moms who carry on this tradition!

Traci - how cute!! you are quite the sketcher. another of your talents.

jennifer - Love that idea! My kids start school on Monday, so maybe if I start writing the notes today, they’ll be done in time. ๐Ÿ™‚

Kirsten - Okay, I’m doing this for the first day of school for sure. And so what about the embarassing part – it builds character!

Amber - Well I do this with Sassy but mine are not as pretty!! :o)

Katy - Your a good artist!! My daughter, Olivia, started 1st grade this year and she is all about taking her lunch to school. The first time she took her lunch I put a note in to surprise her! I’ll have to continue doing it!! Thanks for the idea!

Sarah - Awww that is so cute! I don’t have kids yet, but one day I will and I really want to do this. I’m sure Talby feels really special every day when she opens her lunch. I added this to my “future parenting” folder because it is that sweet!

Michelle - I love putting surprises in lunchboxes too. Now that my son is going into 4th grade, he isn’t as crazy about it, but he sure liked it when he was little. Another good idea is to buy yourself a silly joke book and write a joke down for him every day. Sam loved that!
Now my little one is heading to K, but she doesn’t read yet. Instead, I’ve collected a bunch of stickers I know she’ll love and I’m going to stick one of those in her lunchbox every day instead.
~Michelle

Renee - Thanks for another inspirational story. You helped me make my little guy’s birthday more special (sharing your last celebration with us), and now I have a great way to let him know I’m there with him as he starts kindergarten in just two weeks. xoxo

Kate - Oh, you crack me up! I don’t know how you do it – I only have two and it keeps me on my toes! Thanks for the honestly about chaos. You rock.

Heather - My hubby did this for our son last year — pen drawings on his lunchtime napkin. Monday he starts 1st grade and I’m sure the traditions will continue! I’m inspired to capture some of the fun napkin art in pics to save for them both!!

Lori - The notes are great! Good job.And treating all your kids the same is overrated cause they never think it is exactly the same anyway!
My kids are definately in the mortification stage (teens). But when they were little I found a product that consisted of lunch box notes that were a story, told one note at a time. I bought the mystery ones, so each day they would read a little bit of the story until the mystery was solved. I’m not a creative writer (and hate writing, ergo, no blog) so I resorted to purchasing the notes. Of course, once in a while I wrote a short note and stuck it in too.

kasey - great idea.
but i’m sure if i try it….it’ll be the day that there is a match lying around and the whole school will burn down.
don’t downplay the type of mother you are… obviously your readers love you.
xo

Tammy Sabourin - Love this idea!

TRACI - That made me cry!!!! SO sweet that you do it and even sweeeeeter tha she keeps them!!!!! Darn, I homeschool ๐Ÿ˜› lol

Michelle B - This is so cute! My little guy just started transitional kindergarten last week. And it is all day, so he brings his lunch. I was just thinking I should sneak in some notes…although he can’t read yet…and I need to learn how to draw robots! But maybe I can sneak in some fun before he gets too cool for his mommy.
thanks for sharing!

the end.

the end of my freedom.

the end of my quiet home.
the end of having the computer all to myself.
the end of doing my own thing.
the end of taking a shower without kids walking in…then screaming & covering their eyes.

for three months!
how did this sneak up on me so fast?

here are some pics that were on my camera this week…with very little rhyme or reason.

IMG_8251

IMG_8506
my niece maya.
can you guess how old she is?

IMG_8253

this doesn't look very safe does it?

flowers from the garden.
the peonies are super fabulousand they are my favorites
because they are so darn easy i just get to enjoy them with practically no work at all.

IMG_8844
this drawer was funny to me today.
i was going for the seeds and thought…what an odd combination of things in here.
but maybe everyone keeps their 08' pool passes with their toothbrushes & 4 year old formula holders.

i said there was no rhyme or reason.
you were warned.

so back to THE END….
it's also the start of some good things.
tomorrow is the time for sleeping in.
time for suntans and sprinklers.
time for boxes and boxes of ice pops.
time for painting in the driveway.
time for siblings being forced to play together…bonding…giggling…making forever memories.

i think i will survive.
i think i am ready.
maybe.

can i just have one more week to decide?

Ayoub - ไบŒ20 I dont understand what to expsers. This weblog is actually wonderful. That is not really critically a actually significant statement, but its just about all I could develop following scanning this. You know a great deal relating to this subject matter. A whole lot so that a person produced me personally want to learn a little more about it. Your website is my stepping stone, my buddy. Interesting oversees on this subject.

singing teacher - I love the photos, especially the kid with the dog. Thanks for sharing them.

maureen - I love your beautiful photos…..

Amy Walker - I am so with you Megan! Ours finished Thursday, how on earth can they already be bored on Friday afternoon?!?! I told Frank the time has come for the oldest two kids to get their own computers, they have plenty of money in their savings and are more than willing to pay for them, Best Buy here we come!

carissa... brown eyed fox - it’s heeeeeere!
ready to drop in our lap loads of spontaneous chaos! haaaa!
hugs from your colorado… soon to be your wyoming friend! ๐Ÿ™‚

Kathy - I know how you feel, my daughter has 4 more weeks of school and I’m really sad for her. Kinda! And I feel bad she only gets 8 weeks off. But I also know I will have too many days of I’m bored and bitchiness coming my way suddenly I’m sad for me not her!

Elisa - That dog- I just want to squeeze Waffle.
My little one finished this week- well I guess I should say 3rd one now, but the others have 3 more weeks!

Debra - Ahh yes, summer vacation. I remember it all well. I have a friend that has three children-finding it difficult to get things done during the summer. She has created ‘time-out-slow-down-hour’… All kiddos to a quiet place {their rooms} for some playing with soft toys, reading, pondering summer adventures. One hour, using a timer. Gives all a well deserved ‘time-out’. Then, let the summer games begin again.

Traci - it will go by so fast. eric still has 2 weeks. we are late this year. i loved playing the “guess who” game with my kids.

aimy - awww….. i soooo miss my pups! we had 2 wheatens when we lived in az. they both had to be adopted out to families in cooler climates. after 4 years they both developed such horrible allergies. our oldest practically chewed her leg off at 4am one morning while i was up feeding the babe. tear. sniff. sniff. and the summer cut… i could go on… give a squeeze from me. i miss them!

JerriR - I too am nearing the “end” and could cry typing this post…last one graduates this week from High School and oldest graduates Masters at the end of Summer. My ever “busy” house will soon be quiet…what will the hubby and I do?? (teehee) I love reading your blog, always makes me smile, and we so want a “Waffle” at our house! Enjoy your summer!

Chasity - love the bubble gum!
chas

amy - i have a sign in my house that says
“please excuse the mess, my children are busy making memories.”
i think you need one too. ๐Ÿ™‚
wait-not that your house is a mess…it’s about the memories…ahhh, you know what i mean!
lovely series of pics too.
bring on summer.

Lorilee - EIGHT more days until my freedom!!!!! Well nine if I count the 1/2 paid day for packing up my room. It usually takes 1 LONG day to get it all done. I wish peonies grew this far south!
Blessings,
Lorilee

gina - Lucky- I have one more month. I love summer with the kids. Until about August- lol. then I am READY for Fall. Note to self: plant peonies at the new house- they sound like fun!

AshleyR - Your pictures are so much fun!
Love the Peonies!! They are definitely fabulous. And that Waffle.. he is too cute for words. I want one ๐Ÿ™‚

Melanie - Hi Meg. It has been a while. I check your blog but I don’t get a chance to comment every time. All of your pictures made me happy:) You will have a great summer and make it through. I guess I shouldn’t talk since I only have one kid! Enjoy sleeping late tomorrow and steal a few minutes each day for yourself.

Shannan - 1. I can’t believe your kids are out already! Kids out here have another couple of weeks.
2. Your pictures are gorgeous, as evah.
3. I can’t believe you grew all of those flowers! Peonies are my fave, too, but they have not opened yet.
4. What are those pink and white daisy-looking flowers? Pretty.
5. You don’t really have to answer that last question, it was quasi-rhetorical.
6. Why can most normal people grow annuals from seed, but I can’t? I “planted” 3 packets and not one single one sprouted..
7. Sorry about these lists. What can I say?

Becky @ Farmgirl Paints - Enjoy your beautiful family. Happy SUMMER!

Laura - no rhyme or reason….that sums up summer, doesn’t it?

Sandy - I LOVE Guess Who and would play with Annie all day (my kids are 19 and 15 and won’t play with me anymore).
Enjoy summer!! I’m looking forward to June 4th when I don’t have to bang on the wall to get my 15 y/o out of bed anymore!!

jamie - Amen!

Rach - Good luck and God bless. ๐Ÿ™‚ But hey, it’s summer and summer is AWESOME!!!!

Keri - Our end is near as well. I’m ready! Today, anyway. Ask me again two weeks after school is out….

Anna - I am sure that the summer also holds LOTS and LOTS of photos for you too :o) We all know that Mama Duerksen will be there, camera in hand, for all of those summer memories. Can’t wait to see them!
P.S. You know those mega bottlecaps you got from Maya Road and then turned into awesome magnets?!? Well I contacted them several months ago because they were out. They said that they would be in, in June. Well guess what?!?! I just checked and THEY ARE BACK!!! (Sorry if you already know this) I just ordered my loot of ’em! Woot!

Lori Danelle - Not quite the same, but I remember after I had my second baby, my Mom stayed with us for about a month to help out. When it was time for her to leave, I remember just being so scared of the idea of being left with 2 little girls under the age of 18 months!!! SCARED. I had no idea how I was going to do it.
And then she left, and I made it work. ๐Ÿ™‚
http://loridanelle.blogspot.com

Darby - YOu will survive!! It will be awesome… especially not getting everyone dressed and fed and out the door to school.
I know you get a million questions…. ๐Ÿ™‚
BUT… does Waffle shed? I know this is a very important question. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve inspected your floors so closely and don’t see any fur but really… he has to shed a little, right? It would be too perfect to have a dog that cool that doesn’t shed.
If you have a sec, I’d love to know!

Stephanie - As a teacher… I am SO READY for “the end” :o)… the kids have all mentally checked out weeks ago already, and we can’t get much out of them anymore… it is SO time for the end. :o) Hooray!!! :o)

A pocket full of posies... - AMEN Sista! I’m right there with ya! and I’m super excited- I think?! ๐Ÿ™‚
Happy Summer!& Many Blessings!

traci - The end to getting up early and rushing out the door
The end to …mom I need money, today is the LAST day
The end to…sign this one and this one and this one and this one and this one and this one and this one….UGH
The end to…..This girl was SOOO rude to me today and I try and try to be nice
The end to ….Mom, can you run up my homework
The end to…..I need this list of supplies for a project and I HAVE to have them all by TOMORROW!!!!!
I could go on ๐Ÿ™‚
I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ready for it to be over…YAY!!!!!!!!!!

Joanie @ The Bright Side - Oh, my. I know that feeling! Love your photos, they are gorgeous! Even your junk drawer is cute!! I love all the color in your life that comes across in the photos you capture. Very cheery. Wishing you a very happy summer!

purejoy - welcome to summer. it sounds glorious. and your photos were fabulous, as usual!

Wendy - I have to say that I’m a bit jealous here. Another month of school up here. I’m really looking forward to not having to set the alarm clock.

kristi - wow, you guys end school so early. we still have a month. thank goodness.
good luck!

pam - time for VACATION! lots of togetherness. ๐Ÿ˜‰
those peonies are breathtakingly beautiful.
and if you had breast pads in that drawer i’d be wondering. the rest is normal.

Donna - OH by the way. How can I get me one of those “Happy Passes”?

Donna - I have 2 weeks to go and then it is the “end” for me too. I do enjoy the sleeping in part and the “no homework”…….but by mid July I am so ready for the school bell to ring!! Love your pictures. Have a wonderful summer.

Lisa - AAHHHH, NOPE. TIMES UP.
HUGS FROM MAINE

melissa~afamiliarpath - gorgeous! love your photos. can i borrow some nail polish? my toes have been neglected of pretty color.

Jess - Still have two weeks to go here. Feeling the same emotions…how did it go by so fast? will the kids survive the summer without killing each other? you know, the usual.
love the happy feeling i get when i read you blog. your home is so full of love and color. love that waffle, I saw a puppy golden doodle on tuesday, i could have puppy napped him. i didn’t. promise.

Amanda B - You’re so funny. I want your nail polishes, what brand/where’d you get them? Maybe color names too! AND, I’m pretty sure I saw a bouquet of flowers that looked just like those at Jess’s house last night – were those from your garden too? I have NEVER been into flowers, but this makes me just a little bit interested! They are beautiful!

pam - wow you guys end early! i’ve got four more weeks left of my sanity and then i’ll be singing the crazy blues! here’s to a fun summer! what kind of trampoline do you have…we were thinking of getting one for the girls but got the big raised eyebrows from all the grand-parents…funny thing is is we’ll probably get one anyway! xo

kasey - ha.
i still have one week left to contemplate “the end”.
lol

Lisa-Marie - Pink glittery nail varnish, peonies and gum ball machines. Your blog makes me smile. Your photography is wonderful, and real, and you have the courage to write about who exactly you are.
I kind of want to go buy a gum ball machine now!

a program (that i didn’t forget)

annie's preschool ends tomorrow.

so sad.
she will miss all the wonderful creative love and joy that
she gets walking in that door 3 times a week.

even though she hides behind me every single day as we go in…
she can't wait to get there…then she hides and gets shy and nervous.

IMG_8047
she participated in half of the 5 songs they sang.
and not the other half.

IMG_8037
and that's O-K.

she will miss her teachers.
so much.
but….she gets to come back next year so we will focus on that.
she will probably talk about it everyday…all summer.

IMG_8062
these are annie's bff's
micah and lizzie.
glued at the hip…tackle each other in hugs…share their snacks…play together constantly.

IMG_8060

after the singing we enjoyed some juice and cookies and playtime at the park.
what a nice way to end the school year.

IMG_8066
thanks kristin…this year has been awesome for annie!
september won't come fast enough.
at least for us anyway.

Kathy - You take the most amazing pictures, really inspiring.

heather lea - seriously the most adorable children! my little brother is 5 (i’m 24..yikes!) and his kindergarten graduation is in two weeks. he keeps insisting that he’s going to stay in kindergarten forever because he loves his teacher and friends so much!

missanne - … i love the views children have.
they know the meaning of true friendships.
๐Ÿ™‚ sharing snack, hugs and lots of smiles.

Dawn - I understand how you could forget a program. I only have 2 daughters can’t imagine how you keep up with everyone. My oldest is graduating from high school and there is something every other night it seems. Drive ya crazy but so much fun to be a part of. Hope you all have a good summer.
Dawn

Whitni - This preschool looks like an amazing blessing to have around. Makes me wish I lived in Kansas so I could send my future kids there. Also, you’re blog is so colorful! It makes me soo happy to come over and have a look everyday. Sigh…
-W

kristin - amazing, eh?
yes, september will be good.
thanks for being a part of this joy.

Mary Beth - I need to find a picture of my PrincessLasertron’s preschool show…she STEPPED FORWARD during all the songs.
And then took a bow.
Yep. She was born this way!!!!
Meg, I love your honest life.

Aubrey - Ooh–and she’s wearing her cute rainbow dress–it’s so perfect for the occasion, right?

chas at the wild raspberry - annie and lizzie look like two peas in a pod!
chasity

Joni - Awww….it’s hard to believe it’s the end of the school year already.

Lazy Mom Leslie - Your title cracked me up!

pve - so I guess home schooling is out. he he.

Lori Danelle - So cute! I’m looking forward to when my girls have friends. Right now Charlie, my oldest, plays beside other kids, but she doesn’t really interact a whole lot yet when she plays. I think that aspect of their childhood is one of the parts I’m most looking forward to!
http://loridanelle.blogspot.com

Darby - Go Annie!
We have that little dress and love it!!

Michelle - My baby girl’s preschool program is tonight. She’s off to kindergarten next year. Sigh.

brooke - i always love whatever annie picks out for the day to wear…her style is awesome!
it is funny how you know they love school but they act like it is just pure torture for you to leave them there…meghan does this to me in the morning…i have to peel her flesh from mine and run…and then when i go to pick her up it takes us ten minutes to say our goodbyes and actually leave…silly silly girls…

Laura - and I just finished my post about how I can not wait for school to end!!!!
I am a crappy mom.

Wendy - Hooray! You made it to something! I hope that you had some juice and cookies as a reward. :o)

Melissa - Annie’s school looks like so much fun! The pictures actually make me miss teaching, but after the day I had I guess it’s to be expected! So glad you were able to make this one! I also have a little one who can be very shy at first. Enjoy the summer fun with Annie!

CherryTreeLane - I love this dress she wears! And she is so happy to be there–you can see it! Delightful!

dawn - This is sort of embarrassing — but I decided to sign my daughter up for some summer “preschool” (field trips to the park, movies, that sort of “preschool”). I love my child to the moon and back (and I AM a stay at home mom) — but she loves preschool — and my sanity is worth pulling together a little extra money for a summer session!

Shannan - Please tell me that you made Annie’s dress – and that you’ll be making more to sell. ๐Ÿ™‚
We had Calvin’s program last week, too. He had been singing the songs at home all week, then walked out furiously itching his head with both hands – the truest sign that he is stressed and anxious – and hardly sang at all. Still, I couldn’t take my eyes off of him!

maribeth - as a preschool teacher and mommy, i love your view on children and play. it is rare to find parents that understand the value of a good preschool and a play based curriculum. what a blessing for annie!

amy d - phew, i was starting to think we neighbor girls were gonna have to do a “program intervention” on you ๐Ÿ™‚ FYI…8th grade rec is the 20th ๐Ÿ˜€

don’t be fooled…

Fridaycollage

Friday3collage
Friday2collage

these pictures may look like it was a great day at our house….
but i don't think it was.
there was a principal's office visit,
a very moody teenager,
a very whiny family,
an argument over playing on a baseball team this summer,
and a super crabby mommy.

the pictures sure don't look like that.
i see a refocus is needed in myself when i look at these.
there are so many good things here…ladybug catching,
flowers for planting,
a repentant child,
hugs and kisses,
sun shining on us bright and warm,
pizza in the park,
children getting along and playing together as the sun sets.

refocus.

i went to a few garage sales on friday morning with a car full of mamas…that was fun!
and i brought home this HUGE chalkboard from a school (said the home owner).
for FIVE dollars!
i love it so much.
Chalkcollage
it is 8 feet by 4 feet!
now i guess i am all set to begin homeschooling, right?

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA.
i am so funny.

homeschooling and ME will never happen…for my children's sake.
we'd have art all day.
with extra long recess and coffee shop studies.
and long naps after that.
it would resemble School of Rock but with crafts.
a scene like this can only mean one thing at our house…
IMG_7516
there is a birthday coming up.
scott turns 11 tomorrow.
i tried to skip his birthday instead of share mother's day with him but he didn't like that idea.

Lisa - I HAD A CLOSE FRIEND WHO SAID THE SAME THING ABOUT HOME SCHOOLING. SHE ALSO HAD A CHALK BOARD JUST LIKE THE ONE YOU FOUND AT A LAWN SALE. GUESS WHAT SHE ENDED UP DOING? YUP. I WON’T EVEN SAY THE WORD. AND YOU KNOW, ART ALL DAY WITH A COFFEE SHOP BREAK AND A LITTLE SIESTA CAN BE GOOD.
HUGS FROM MAINE

wendy - LOVE that chalkboard! And for only $5? What a steal! And don’t underestimate your potential to home school. We did it for a year and LOVED the heck out of it. The kids are back in school now but that was one of our very favorite experiences of all time! I’ll just leave it at that. ๐Ÿ™‚

carissa... brown eyed fox - i wanna go garage sale hunting….. wahhhhh… wahhhh!
way fun… and MY WORD… scoRRRRRRe… that chalkboard!
i can only find them on Ebay… after a million dollars to ship… ha! ๐Ÿ™‚
the fun they… and YOU will have with that! neato!
i was grouchier that you… nanny nanny boo boo!
girrrrrrl… !

Elisa - The great thing about school is that they can go away, and you get a chance to miss them, and then they come back. Perfect.

megan - speaking of focusing… what camera and lens did you use for these shots… they are BEAUTIFUL!! makes me want to jump through the screen and into your yard with you!

Heidi Jo the Artist - Great photos! I hope you had nice Motherโ€™s Day and fun celebrating your sonโ€™s birthday!
It is crazy to me how many people think they can NOT homeschool. We DO homeschool and I once too was in that mindset that we would NEVER homeschool. But, my husband opened up my eyes to the school system and how sadly broken it really is. My husband is a teacher (yes you read that right!) and sees many things first hand and we wish the school system was different for the sake of this countryโ€™s future. Iโ€™m sure it could be worse, but we most definitely think it could be better too. And anyone that says they cannot homeschool, I say to themโ€ฆDO YOUR RESEARCH (on the internet or in books- anything by John Taylor Gatto is great, start with โ€œDumbing Us Downโ€ which is a great start and an easy read)!
There are many ways of homeschooling besides the traditional textbooks. We personally choose a more relaxing homeschooling environment, โ€œunschoolingโ€, and it works for us thus far. It is amazing to watch your child/ren learn on a day to day basis. I love to see the light bulb go off when my son gets something! I love when my son asks me questions, and if I donโ€™t know the answer we look it up together. I think it is fun to learn and I still consider myself to be a student and I will for the rest of my life. I donโ€™t know everything, and neither does any teacher teaching in a school. You can teach your children so many things that canโ€™t be taught in a classroom and they will get much more one on one attention.
I have days that arenโ€™t perfect too, I think we all have bad days sometimes, but without the bad, I think we wouldnโ€™t appreciate the good. Refocusing is great, I like that! ๐Ÿ™‚
Oh and I love your chalkboard find too! I found a really nice LARGE bulletin board for FREE while out and about one day, but I gave it to my husband for his classroom. If I find a big chalkboard or marker board it wonโ€™t be leaving our home unless we move! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Laura - there is no fooling me!! I have learned that behind and in between our beautiful pictures, are the REAL pictures of our every day.
But how great that we have cameras to capture those fleeting moments of happiness, sanity, and creation. Some days, that is all that gets me through.

Lori McDonough - Ok, why have I never discovered your blog before this? You rock…I’ll be back! Have a super day!
Lori

anne - i love how your family twinkles. ๐Ÿ™‚

Georgia - Hi Meg,
I was wondering what software you use to make the photos into a collage / montage. I use photoshop, but me and photoshop dont seem to get on very well … lol
Look forward to hearing back from you ๐Ÿ™‚
Georgia x

chas at the wild raspberry - glad you found the bright side
๐Ÿ™‚
chasity

evan - i feel the same way about homeschooling my kids. school of rock but with crafts. so funny! you are a beautiful mom. i hope your mother’s day was amazing. actually i’m sure it was ๐Ÿ™‚

Jerusalem Greer - another reason I am thankful for my blog, when I look back over it, I see so many good things and so few not so good. helps to keep things in perspective!

Staci - I have to re-focus every day it seems ๐Ÿ™‚ This moving stuff makes me VERY grumpy and very short with my kiddoes these days ๐Ÿ™ I know once we get settled (will we EVER?) I won’t feel like yelling so much ๐Ÿ™‚ My red stove makes me very happy though ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope your Mother’s Day was good and that Scott has a very happy 11th birthday!!!! Thanks again for always keepin’ it real Meg!!!!!

chelsea - beautiful photos and GREAT chalkboard find!

gina - oh “fun” girls’ day of shopping eneded with me carrying a kicking screaming 4 yo out of Target today. But on the good side… breakfast in bed, by the same 4 yo and her sisters and dad, lots of thoughtful and wonderful! presents, the 6 super big mugs I plan to use as bowls at Pier 1 BEFORE said meltdown. ๐Ÿ™‚
Love the chalkboard- what a find!!

Shayla - your pictures are so pretty! I love the layout they are in!!
and that chalkboard—for FIVE bucks! what a great steal!!!! :] I hope you enjoy it!!!

Rach - Happy Mother’s Day!! May it be as wonderfully chaotic as every other day with a bundle of kids. ๐Ÿ™‚

Amber - so glad i’m not the only mom out there who needs to refocus. happy mother’s day to you!

Leigh - I am with you on the whole situation that is going in your house! My youngest turned 13 today and I have 3, 14 year olds…attitude. I think I will go have a nap now. Hope you have a good mom’s day.

Trish - NO way $5 I need to go garage saling with you… although we’d probably always be racing out of the van trying to find the best deals before the other does… a little competition never hurt ๐Ÿ™‚
yes I believe that is what homeschooling would look like for me too. Although I would probably incorporate some internet lessons. Requiring them to have their own laptop and start their own blog ๐Ÿ˜‰ how fun would that be!?
Happy Mother’s Day… thanks for sharing your “mommy” stories with all of us!

Sarah - It’s the “end of school” crabbies…it’s happening at my house too…so don’t despair! Love the pics anyways, deceiving or not…sometimes it’s nice to deceive ourselves!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

kat - Wow! That giant chalkboard is a great score indeed! Those are lovely pictures! I often need a reality check as well as sometimes it can be all to easy to get bogged down by the negative details while all the lovely ones dance around the periphery.
I too know what it is like to share celebrations with my children. My anniversary and Olivia’s birthday are the same day and Lauren was scheduled to be born on my birthday until the doctor took mercy and delivered her three days earlier so we could each have our own special day. We still celebrate together anyway and it is special for both of us!
Happy Mother’s Day!!!
P.S. I made your cheesy shells earlier this week and they were totally delish!

Beth - I just have to comment again, on this Mother’s Day morning. I find such meaning in the ability to find blessing among the brokenness, and thank you for putting it to words so the rest of us remember to do that too. I love this story and it reminds me to find the good, look for the blessings, every day:
One day some people came to the master
and asked: How can you be happy
in a world of such impermanence,
where you cannot protect your loved ones
from harm, illness or death?
The master held up a glass and said:
Someone gave me this glass;
It holds my water admirably
and it glistens in the sunlight.
I touch it and it rings!
One day the wind
may blow it off the shelf,
or my elbow
may knock it from the table.
I know this glass is already broken,
so I enjoy it — incredibly.
~Achaan Chah Subato

Ruth - you are a wise lady… and hilarious ๐Ÿ™‚
love that picture of talby, the light is incredible.
good luck with the birthday!

Lori Danelle - Pizza at your house too? Little Ceasar’s $5 pizza every Saturday right before we head to church. I think my two year old likes it a whole lot more than I do!
I love your honesty. So many would go with the story the pictures told, but that’s not real life. . .at least not in my house!! Our downs happen more often than we’d like, but the ups make the downs worth fighting through.
http://loridanelle.blogspot.com

Traci - i love your posts. they are always so honest. beautiful photos meg – it does look like it was a wonderful day. and it was, when you refocused. i need to refocus. i have a very moody teenager here to, yet she is almost 19 so you’d think she would be way over that stage. no such luck. happy mothers day!!

Christina - That is a sweet chalkboard! I wish I could find something like that. Wow.
I love your honesty! Isn’t it funny to look at pictures like that and know how it “really was”? I like to take the moments at the end of the day and reassess, though; it helps with the perspective. Have a wonderful Mother’s Day.

Starnes Fam - Happy Mother’s Day to one crafty mama. You are blessed.

Kate - Seriously. You crack me up. You rock the big blue sky.

Beth - So good to be able to refocus and see the good when things seem to be falling down around you — so healing. Your pictures speak the truth. I also laugh hard when I think of myself and homeschooling. Thank goodness for public school. We share our wedding anniversary with Emma’s birthday. Was always a challenge when she was little, but she’s ok with sharing with us now ๐Ÿ™‚
Happy Mother’s day to you and Happy Birthday to Scott!

Jess - My birthday is tomorrow, I don’t look at it as either one of us is missing out. I see it as taking care of two birds with one stone. I’d be with my family anyhow, might as well take care of two things at once!

Jody - ok, i’m falling more in love with you…:-)
my friends also break out into hysterical laughing when my name and homeschooling are mentioned in the same sentence.

Mary - You really spoke the words I’ve been thinking.
Refocus
I’m dealing with a bad case of mommy burnout,
Glad to hear I’m not the only one that has those days

Cate O'Malley - I totally hear you about refocusing. Had a mess of plans today and instead we were all house-bound and both kids were sick. Tomorrow is another day. Love the chalkboard find!

aimy - what is the name of your etsy shop????? ๐Ÿ™‚

Melanie - You sure would have had us fooled. Those pictures look so beautiful and we would have never known that you didn’t have a happy household. I hope you have a great Mother’s Day and a good birthday for the birthday boy.

Lori - Thanks for keeping it real! We all need to refocus now and then. My kids are teenagers now, and I look back at pictures when they were little and get all teary-eyed…forgetting the hard days when nothing seemed to go right and I felt like a bad mom. AND I feel much better that other people recognize that homeschooling wouldn’t work for them. I have always said I would love for my children to be homeschooled, just not in my home by me! ha ha. Happy Mother’s Day!

Kelly Anne - Ha! My brother’s birthday is the 10th, as well, so we’ve had to deal with the occasional holiday overlap for a while now (he’ll be 21 tomorrow). Think of it this way: if he’s anything like Casey, he’ll reach an age when birthdays mean a special day AWAY from parents. So that’ll be a treat! :oD

Joni - Thank you for the refocus….don’t we all need that sometimes. On my blog sometimes I feel like I should add the following disclaimers to some of my photos and indicate what real life was like that day!
XOXO
Joni

jamie - Sounds like a Regular old day in the life of many families! Im with you..No Way would this Mom ever be a Home Schooler.. We would Kill each other after a week! Happy Mothers Day.. I always Enjoy your Posts and Pictures are Amazing.. Jamie

Jenny Wenzel - So jealous of the chalkboard…$5??? That is a crazy GREAT deal!

jennymama - you make me laugh. i love it! that’s exactly what our homeschooling would be like! ha! happy mother’s day!!

Angela - Oh, thank goodness someone else knows that she’s not cut out to homeschool! LOL
Great pics. I loved them!

lauren - oh my gosh! my favorite photo is the 2nd row down, the one of your daughter. the lighting is gorgeous and her expression has so much character. love love it.
oh yea, and i do like the city life. but your life sure looks like fun! i am lookin forward to the day that i am back in texas and can sit on the porch and watch the sunset. and when i want to feel the grass in my toes, i just run outside! and when i can actually see all those stars up in the sky at night… sigh.
anyhow. hope you’re having a beautiful and relaxing saturday.

amy - LOVE the giant chalkboard. What a great find!
I’m just curious…when you post photos on your blog in a “collage” like this post, do you have an action or template for that or is it all you?? I love that look!

PamperingBeki - Haha!
My blog post a few minutes ago was very similar to this.
Soooo time to refocus here.
Last week kicked my butt.
I can’t wait for summer.

erica - thank you for the encouragement to refocus. i, too, needed that this week. and i understand you having to share a holiday w/ a kids birthday- my oldest son was born on my anniversary! if something gets skipped, it’s usually our anniversary (to a later date lol)

patricia - No wonder, I come back here.
You are honest, when things are good and even when they are not.
I guess, I am attracted to those photos and then your honesty.
I could use a photographer like you to capture the good.
pve

amy (not corey) - Is Talby playing “Guess the Missing Word,” by any chance? ๐Ÿ™‚

Keri - I know what you mean about how pictures can be a bit deceiving. I’m hoping when I’m old and gray I’ll forget the “back story” behind those kind of shots, and just see the happy.
Happy Mother’s Day tomorrow – and b-day to Scott, too!

Kelly - It’s always hard to focus on the good instead of the harder moments. It’s a worthwhile thing to strive for, as I’m sure you know!
My little girl has that rainbow shirt, but in white, it is her favorite shirt and she wears it constantly!
