a century + one.

last week, my great aunt who was 101 years old…passed away.
101 is quite an accomplishment.

IMG_3869

she didn't have grandchildren so for the 10 years we lived close to her in illinois, she got to play that role for us.

IMG_3870

i always brought the kids over in their halloween costumes.
we spent several Easters with her.
she'd set up a little egg hunt in her living room.
we would  stop by her house for a surprise when we were visiting craig at his office.
she saved things for my kids that she'd find on her walks…like feathers or neat rocks.

IMG_4789

we'd walk around the pond behind her house and she'd get so nervous my little ones were going to fall in.
she was ALWAYS amazed that Craig would change diapers or feed the babies.  :)
she was a huge jayhawk fan.
always a kansas girl even though she lived in illinois over 50 years!
she was spunky and stubborn but always treated me so kindly and i knew she loved me.

until recently we had written letters back and forth every month since we moved to kansas.
i love writing and receiving her letters.

i traveled up to chicago for her 100th party.

6a00d8341c469c53ef0133f583b778970b-700wi

at her birthday party last year she said "thank you all for coming….i wouldn't wish this on anyone"
that was her personality.
we should've known she'd say something like that.

6a00d8341c469c53ef013488a427bc970c-700wi

this week i am traveling again but this time to her funeral….celebration of life cermony is a better term.

my dad and mom and i are drove the 10+hours up to her home in Illinois.
we will be helping her son pack up her estate,
attending her service,
and saying goodbye to that part of my life.

it's always an emotional thing to close something down forever.
never seeing her.
never hearing her.
never giving one last hug.
never going to that house again.
it's part of life too….feeling those feelings….honoring a loved one's wishes….paying your respect.

IMG_4779

i will miss her.
she was funny even when she didn't try to be.
she made me feel good about myself.
she always said i was a good mother.
that meant something.

you can bet i will be instagramming my way through the midwest and while in hinsdale, Illinois.

i hope to get at least one meal with chicago jen.

i hope to blog too….but who knows…i am pretty sure she didn't have wifi hooked up to her typewriter.  :)

do you have a special person like this in your life?
do you need to write them a letter?
right now?
its now or never people….get on it…let someone know today the things you appreciate about them.
before you can't any more.

Mike - 101 is a amazing accomplishment. What was her secret to living so long?

erin - so sorry to hear about your great Aunt.
I see Waffle in a couch pillow in the last picture! so you know you’re family was always with her!!

Melanie - What a wonderful tribute to your great-aunt. I remember your posting & pictures from her 100th birthday last year. How blessed you were to have her in your life! Hinsdale, IL…not too far from me – less than an hour drive.

Talysa - So sorry for your loss friend. I’ve so enjoyed reading about her life and how it influenced yours. Thank you for sharing her with us. Your family will be in my prayers.

Agnieszka - Loved this post. Such a beautiful tribute! She sounds like a great person. Sorry for your loss 🙁

Teresa - I grew up in Hinsdale, I wonder if knew your aunt. My mom owned a gift store in town so I would’t be surprised if our paths crossed. How lucky you are to have had such a great influence. May you and your family feel peace at this time.

C.M.A. - I have been reading your blog for just a few months but this is my first time commenting. Your aunt sounds fabulous. I lost my grandma when I was 14. Too young to really grasp what I was losing… My mom, now 67, told me it was a couple of years before she stopped reaching for the phone to tell my grandma something.

marla - This post is so beautiful in every single way 🙂

Sara - I lost my grandmother, who was 95, and my fiancee’s father, who was 60, on the same day last November. I know how you feel when you talk about never being able to talk to them, visit them, or just sit with them and enjoy their company. I hold on to the memories I have of both of them and know that they are in a better place. We had a celebration of life for my fiancee’s dad and it was wonderful. There were many tears but there were just as many laughs.
My thoughts go out to you and your family during this sad time.

Julie Silcock - What a wonderful lady. My grandmother passed away last week and we just had her funeral (celebration of life ) yesterday. You learn so much about them that you didn’t know at these. My thoughts are with you.

julia - I love that last picture of your great aunt.
I think it’s interesting what she said at her 100th.

Lorel - beautifully said Meg! Wish I was there with you all.

emily hope - So very sorry for the loss of your sweet Auntie – what a treasure to have had her in your lives! blessings to you as you celebrate her life & what she meant to all of you 🙂

Tracey - The link I just left doesn’t seem to be working. Sorry – I can’t seem to figure out how to fix it. 🙁

Tracey - I am so sorry for your loss! I also had someone special in my life – my Papaw. He passed away a few years ago. My sweet husband, who is so good with words – wrote a beautiful article and I wanted to share:http://thenichols-tracey.blogspot.com/2009/07/memorial.html. You are in my thoughts and prayers as you walk through this grieving time.

Midwest Magnolia - Melissa Lewis - So special. Thank you so much for sharing and reminding us to actively love the ones we love. Praying for your family during this time!

tara pollard pakosta - so sorry for your loss, sounds like she was an AMAZING woman!
tara

Aby Gittings - So sorry for your loss Meg. She sounds like a character! I love that! What wonderful memories you must have and I can’t imagine the joy you and your family brought to her! Thanks for the advice… I’m going to write my Mom now.

TAB - I am so happy you have those sweet memories. I am sorry for your loss.

Amber L Peters - I’m so sorry for your loss.

Ryanne - HI Meg,
I never comment. But I came to your site to find some inspiration today, and I found it. Bless you Aunt.

Angela - I just wish I had your private email to share how well i know these feelings, well enough not to make it public because my Mama would spank me at, even at 42. I wish you well, she too (your aunt) would want you to be well and I love that you know and respect our elders.

cheryl @ a pretty cool life. - So sorry, Meg.
“I wouldn’t wish this on anyone.” Hilarious.
And Hinsdale!!! That’s my hometown! Best place on earth!!

denise@victory rd - c.s. lewis said, “i am a soul, i have a body,” praise God our souls will live with him forever in glory and in his love “better than life.” i pray this is a blessed celebration time for you and your family.

Jacqui - Yes! I feel your pain. I recently celebrated the lives of my nan and pa.. both very close to 100 years old and both gone within 4 months of each other. They were married 71 years. I have really started to miss nan again and after reading your blog I have decided to hold a craft night with my mum, sis, best friend and aunt. I know nan would like this. No one could knit like her. My kids still wear her knits. I’m planning on making some thank you gifts for my guests with some special tribute dedicated to nanna’s! The grief is hard but in some ways I feel they gave me enough love to last my lifetime. I also think of all the loss they would experienced living to such an age and they still managed to keep such a great sense of humour. That keeps me going xox
Jacqui (Australia)

Maureen - Love this post. Love how much you love your family, all of the extended as well. Funny to think of you in Hinsdale where I live. Hope you get to see your friend Jen. Also you should check out the store Vintage Charm in LaGrange if you have the time. My favorite, tell them Maureen sent you.

Bloom in the Details - What a wonderful tribute. She looks amazing at 100!! How special to have someone like that in your life. Her memories with your kids will last forever:)
Jessie Lynn @Bloominthedetails

Lori Austin - What sweet, special memories you have.
Sounds like she was one fantastic lady.
Thoughts and prayers during this time for you all.

Carrie - I was in an Olive Garden the first time I knew that my husband’s granny was something really special. She was like 86 or 87 at the time and I was alone with her for a few minutes. She leaned over and said ” thank goodness they left, have you checked out that waiter’s back side, it’s something alright”. I laughed so hard. She is now 95 and she has suffered in her memory and health recently. She just moved into a nursing home and true to her spirit is having the time of her life, honestly! I love granny even if she is not my own. My 4 year old adores her. When she was 2 Granny was in the hospital for Christmas and even though she was just 2, she became teary eyed at the dinner table and wanted Granny to be there. She tried to nurse off of her when she was about 6 months old. Granny told her ” sweety, these wells have been dry for decades”, that cracked me up. When so many people looked at me funny for cloth diapering ( even though my girls get hives and burns from disposables), Granny made me feel awesome one day when I pulled out some and she said ” oh you have real diapers, so much better then those stupid paper ones”. She had no clue that in a time in which I was questioning everything I did as new parent, that a simple remark like that really boosted me! We are going to have to say goodbye to her I know at some point, hopefully not too soon as she is honestly having a ball at her new home.
Thank you for letting me share.

Amy @ Little for a Little While - so sorry for your loss. She sounds like one heck of an amazing woman. I’m loving all the instagram pics, hope you are able to take home some of her treasures to remember her by. Hugs!

Patty - There is a lot of living to be done in 101 years. We should all be so fortunate. A wonderful tribute, Meg.

Cindy - I nearly cried. What a blessing!

Kimberlee Jost - I am so glad that you are there.
Be fully present, then come home safely to us.
I love you, friend.

happygirl - 101 is such a long life. Even when expected, death is a blow. It’s so final. You were a sweet great niece and I know she is blessed to be with her father in heaven. 🙂

Rachel B. - What a beautiful post. So sorry for your loss. My husband’s Grami lived to be 96. Your aunt reminds me a lot of her.

Chris - So sorry for your loss. May she rest in peace….

Rach - Love that last picture. Seems to capture her perfectly. 101 is a good life for sure. A celebration indeed.

kerry - Oh Meg, I’m so sorry for your loss 🙁 101 years is a phenomenal lifetime, I hope I get to live that long and have a lovely family around me, as she did.
Big hugs to you all.
Kerry xxxxxx

Rosemary - What a beautiful life your grandmother lived. My condolences to your family.
Safe travels Meg! I look forward to your instagramming in Hinsdale. You’re in for some interesting weather out here…

Valerie @ Chateau A La Mode - What a beautiful post Meg. Thankfully you have a heart full of beautiful memories of her, but still we always miss our loved ones even if they get to live to be 101. You truly know what life is all about, the people we love and then loving on them. God bless your heart this week Meg. I will keep you in my prayers xoxo

Tiffany - A celebration of life is right, 101 is an impressive feat. I went to a celebration of life a few weeks ago and I got a little choked up, but they were happy tears, celebrating life, i left a better person. And there is something so sentimental about our elders and how they lose their filters and say any and everything, what a blessing they are. Thanks for sharing (and now can i add the turquoise necklace you wore at the 100 party is very pretty, i didn’t “read” your blog then but thought you should know)

Georgia - Ohhh Meg so sorry to hear that, what a fantastic ceremony it will be though, 101 years is incredible! I wish you all the best, and support for sorting her house out, i can imagine how hard it will be (Plus she is probably in heaven looking down thinking.. i wonder where that had gone!) lol
lovely post made me tear up.. xx

Tanya H - So sorry for your loss. My mom is spending the entire month of June clearing out her parents house after the death of my grandmother. No easy task. Safe travels to you, and enjoy the celebration of her life!

Kate - Oh Meg. I am so very, very sorry for your loss. My grandmother (mom’s mom) has been very sick and I am heading to Texas this weekend to just spend some time with her. It will be so good just to sit and hold her hand.

chris - Oh may she rest in peace . 101 is so amazing , my Grandfather just celebrated 100 and moved into a new apt , its amazing.

Kristin - So sorry for your loss. She looks like an amazing women!

roganne - i’m so sorry for your loss. i hope that you find comfort in reliving your memories with her. safe travels 🙂

Molly - My mother passed away last month and my girls and I just got back from 18 days away burying her, celebrating her life, packing up her house, taking things to consignment, having an estate sale, etc. It’s hard work. And it’s hard going through all the memories of things you remember growing up, finding homes for the items, reliving the personal memories attached to them and for me, to my mother’s home, where I stayed a lot. Sending lots of prayers your way as you remember this special woman in your life. Molly

amy jupin - this post…these photos…especially the one with you looking at her holding your pillow you made for her…
it just slayed me.
i am glad you are taking the trip with your parents.
good memories to be had.
be careful.
and give chicago jen a HUGE hug from me.
xo.

Michelle B. - I am blessed to have had 2 very special people like her, my Grandma’s Gert and Berneice. Miss them like crazy and miss all those “little” things that I have learned are really the “big” things….the smell of grandma’s cooking, her perfume, her smile and her eyes and the softness of her skin, the way she set the table for EVERY meal, her left-over’s tasted GOURMET, their love for me that was so evident, I didn’t have to do anything but walk in the door and it was like they won the lottery (everyone should be made to feel like that : )…..the little words of wisdom that they spoke…out of their life’s experiences….I miss them so much. UGH…tears. Blessings to you and your family : )

Leah - So sorry for your loss, Meg! It’s so hard to lose such a special person. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Andrea - Meg, I am so sorry for your losss. Enjoy your time in Illinois with family and Chicago Jen…..safe travels.

Dani - Precious memories! Prayers for you and your family. I remembered the post about her b-day party. She seemed like an incredible woman. Have a safe trip!

Alice H - Made me cry. She looked like a wonderful woman. My grandma is this special person to me.

mae - Love this. What a beautiful, beautiful tribute.

Handbags*n*Pigtails - We just buried our beloved Pastor on Sunday, Father’s Day. He was 87 and an old Englishman. It hit me really hard that day although we’d all been in a flurry of activity for over a week preparing for around 350 guests who were arriving to stay at the church(which is also a Bible School and publishing house). He was like the Godly grandfather I’ve never had from either side of my family and when they lowered him into the ground a piece of me went with him.
I know he is whole now and rejoicing in Heaven with his sweet wife but wow…when someone leaves this earth its felt in a deep way down here.
My deepest sympathies for the loss of this sweet lady.

jen - your post has brought me to tears…i have many letters like that to write but they are already long gone to read them…maybe i will do them just the same. and i should call my dad for fathers day. thank you for the glimpse into what seemed like a real firecracker and i am so sorry to hear of her passing. xo

chrissi - what a wonderful post. what a celebration of life. i love the photo of you and your aunt at her birthday party. she looks like a treasure. how lucky you are to have had her in your life. when i lose someone special i always imagine the wonderful celebration that they are having in heaven. just imagine the celebration she must be enjoying.

Leadia Jarvis - My grandma, who passed at 94 lived the same way and brought such joy to our lives. My sympathies on your loss.
And…Hinsdale, IL? That is right next door to Western Springs where I grew up! Small world. If you pass Crystal Lake on your way back, honk!

april - So sorry for your loss friend. I remember the sweet post you wrote when you celebrated her birthday last year. She is at peace now with the Lord……xoxo

Kirsten J - Ok. This is what my friend calls a “God breeze”. I need to call my favorite Auntie Linda and see if she can join us at the Oregon Coast tthis summer. My kids shoul know her, and she’s only 15 years older than me, so chances are THEIR kids will know her. I have tears in my eyes – enjoy the celebration!

Jana Banana - I’m so sorry for your loss, she sounds like an amazing lady. Hoping you have safe travels. Thanks for the reminder to let people know how much they mean to us now vs. later.

Jana Banana - I’m so sorry for your loss. She sounds like an amazing lady. Hoping you have safe travels. Thanks for the reminder to tell people how important they are to us now vs. later.

Patti Mullican - I’m sorry for your loss and hope you will continue to treasure these sweet memories. Praying for safe travel for you and your family and comfort for her son. Time goes by much too quickly when we procrastinate telling those we love how much so. Thanks for the reminder.

rae - so sorry to hear this. but wow, 101! that really is something to celebrate!

tiffany gardner - I remember your post about her 100th birthday and it was touching. You’re right… it is a celebration of life! 101 years…such a celebration!! Your blog brings such joy to me and even today on a sad entry… you remind us to live in the moment and love our life! Thank you… my fav blog girl!!

Kimberly Dial - So sorry to hear about your Aunt … thanks for the reminder … safe journey my friend 🙂

karen gerstenberger - Dear Meg, I am sorry for your loss, but also thankful for your auntie’s presence in your life (and your family’s life) for so many years! She sounds like she was a real character. God bless you with comfort, love and peace as you travel to her home – you’ll be on a sentimental, as well as a physical, journey.

sheryl - So sorry for your loss. The way you wrote about her was perfect she sounded like such a fire cracker! What a great life she had!! 🙂 I will be visiting Naperville IL this week too from GA. Have a safe time!

Katie - ok. I’m bawling.
Sorry for your loss, Meg.

Penny - Meg,
I am so sorry about the passing of your beautiful Aunt. You certainly have a way with words, that was a great tribute. I am sure you were a source of joy and pride to your Aunt. She sounds like such a caring person, much like you. Take care on your trip to her celebration of life. And what a wonderful 101 years!

Penny - Jennifer,
I am so sorry that you are going through this rough time. Cherish these last weeks with your Mom. I will say a prayer for peace for your family.

Jennifer Parks - This post brought tears to my eyes. My grandmother was very special to me she passed a few years back unexpectedly. Now, its my mother’s turn. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January officially, she only has a few more weeks left with us. I don’t look forward to her passing as we are very close, I agree with the forever thing, its very hard to think about. I’m sorry for your loss, she seemed to be an amazing woman who lived a wonderful life.

Chantelle GivenMuch - Your sweet aunt sounds a lot like my grammy – 94 and still kickin’. 🙂 Thank your for this reminder to enjoy her while I can. ((hug)) I’m very sorry about your loss.

what inspires you - Absolutely Lovely! Thanks for sharing! Glad I found this space.

the domestic fringe - This is a such a beautiful post and tribute to your aunt. It made me get all teary-eyed. I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s wonderful that you have so many fond memories and that your children got to spend time with her. Travel safe.
~FringeGirl

Jessie Hurst - I’m basically sobbing right now. Although I’m pregnant and extremely hormonal this brought me to a different level of tears. My sweet Mama has always been my biggest cheerleader and fan and is now suffering from dementia. It’s so hard because I miss those conversations and hearing her sweet words of wisdom. I know she knows I love her but it is so hard to watch the ones you love and your hero grow old!

Rachel J - Im’ so sorry for your loss Megalicious! I know how hard it is. We are going thru the same thing, packing up my grandparents house. They live in Hoffman Estates IL. I was there for 2 weeks and just got back last week! Imagine only being 30 minutes from you! I will be praying for you guys and all the emotions surrounding this time. God bless you guys!

Kelly - This is a beautiful way to honor your aunt. That last picture is stunning & your words were so heartfelt! I hope you feel the Lord’s peace as you celebrate her life with your family this week.

Sarah - Love this post. What a wonderful woman she sounds like and such a long life! I’m sure your trip will be emotional and tiring but worth it. I need to do more for my grandparents that live in the same town as I do…thanks for the reminder! Hope you have a safe trip!

Stephany - I am sorry for your loss.
She sounds like she was an amazing woman.

Regina - Beautifully written! Thanks for the reminder to keep in touch as our moments to do so truly are fleeting, huh? What a wonderful tribute to her! And yes, you ARE indeed a good mother. 🙂

Mary - You just brought a girl that is tough as nails to tears, my friend! Oh my gosh, I loved this post. I am so sorry to hear of your loss, but soooo happy to hear of your appreciation for her. Women like her are just so rare and special. Such a wonderful tribute!
Mary

Gretchen - You are right about celebrating her life. She sounds like she was a wonderful woman! The closing up part is so true, and it is difficult. It was hard when my husband passed, and my son and I had to go through his things. What do you keep and what gets donated? So hard. It sounds like she had a wonderful time hear, but God has called her home. She will always be in your heart, and will forever be watching over you. Prayers for safe travels, and smiles when you think of her.

Kim Barlow - Same..crying..may the wonderful memories you have of times spent with her warm your heart and bring you joy.
God Bless,
Kim Barlow

Whitney - Megan, so sorry for your loss… This brings back a lot of memories for me as I had a wonderful and dear great aunt who lived to 109… It is amazing to hear the stories of a life spanning so many generations and experiences. What a wonderful tribute your post is.

jen s - I am so sorry to hear of your aunt’s passing. Sounds like she was a wonderful, spunky lady! No doubt there will be trips down memory lane while here in Chicago! As a personal side, you’re in my hometown! My mom is still there and we were just there last night! Enjoy that beautiful town!

northern cottage - this post made me cry…a happy good cry mixed with some sad! She looked fabulous (not her amazing age – talk about aging gracefully) I lost my mom not too long ago and she REMINDS me of her…so thank you for the little glimmer, the memories flooding back…the love! so very sorry for your loss! xo

promoted.

so this is it.
my last morning home alone.
and i am not even home alone…scott is here with me.
but you know what i mean…home without a child who needs me to get their breakfast and stuff.

i love summer.
but that first week or two is always an adjustment for ME.

scott was promoted out of eighth grade last night.
i took a few pictures at the ceremony but they were all blurry.

in my hair's defense….
we'd had 100mph winds all day and it was 100 degrees in that room…and fluorescent lighting.

IMG_1633-1
TWINS!  :)

IMG_1615-1

i could've started tearing up at any moment.
like when he said "congratulations freshman class of 2013"  or when they gave out awards.
but i held it together.

this school year was excellent for all the kids in the new school but i think especially for scott.
it has been a really great year!
i am grateful for that.
these kids are awesome…such wonderful young men.  they are quite goofy….but wonderful.
i am so happy we get to watch them grow up together.

so….i guess i better do SOMETHING with my last 3.5 hours alone.
dishes?  laundry?  mop?  vacuum?

no.

a long hot bath….at the craft house….YES.

Wendy - Congrats Scott! Love your blog Meg!!!! You are inspiring me to be crafty and sporty! 🙂

April R - gotta chime in with my 2 cents
1st penny: about your hair – I was looking at the first photos and
I promise one of my first thoughts was,
“She looks very pretty. Her hair looks good – wonder how she got that texture and body?”
then I scrolled down and saw your “in my hair’s defense…” then I thought,
“Aww, how many ladies do that? Think something is messed up when other’s are thinking
it’s just fine.”
Then I thought, “She’s still got a sweet smile on and enjoying her family; smart lady.”
I’m going to try to remember that the next time I feel self conscious about myself. 🙂
2nd penny: Good for you on the bubble bath. I spent a morning at the beach all by myself to celebrate the last day of school – Haven’t done that in so long I can’t remember so it was a sweet blessing 🙂

Jen Brandt - I was thinking how great your hair looked! I hate mine these days!

Laura Phelps - EVERY SINGLE SUMMER I have the same reaction to your posts…that I can not believe how early your kids get out of school.
Maybe next year I won’t be surprised.
I guess it is because I am so NOT READY.
Jack is home sick today with an awesome rash…
and Luke has no school…
and the rest have a half day…
and THAT has me twitchy…
can not imagine them all home. together. in my house. with me.
have a great bath….and congrats to your graduate!

Lori Austin - Freshman year – good luck! 🙂
Stop – you look fine.
Summer – I’m trying so hard to have a good attitude. I have
a few more days before mine are out. I have decided to make a SUMMER LIST to help with my bad attitude. 🙂 Thanks.

Karen - He looks so grown up! Before I read your reasons that your hair looks “bad” I was thinking “wow, I wonder if I can pull off that awesome look?”. Seriously. Not joking. 100%. Still thinking about it.

christine ishmael - I’m so jealous you have a private house to take a hot bath in! What’s better is you probably don’t even have to clean the tub before you can get in…Who does that? Lucky girls, that’s who! ha ha…enjoy!

Dani - Way to go, Scott! Freshman… WOW! I remember those days of high school.
Your hair is great! I love short hair.. so easy to fix!

Sara Torbett - Big day at your house! 🙂 Welcome to summer too. I have one baby and am expecting another..so my days of that much alone time are far, far away. But coming sooner than I can imagine I’m sure. I do loove to take a long bath on the weekends though! So relaxing :). Do you guys have a summer list written yet?

Trisha - Awww, I can’t believe Scot will be a freshman next year! I miss that “kid”. Seems like he was just in my 4th grade class. 🙂

happygirl - Welcome to summer. This looked like a lovely event. It’s sweet to have the grandma there. 🙂

Seriously Sassy Mama - I too have a couple hours till summer. I work this weekend, then my girls are going to my parents at the lake for three days so I can get stuff done at the old house before we turn over the keys. Enjoy your bath. I have not taken a bath in peace in over 8 years. There is always a girl who wants to hang out with mommy. Life with three daughters.

ko. s - Congrats to Scott. I had to double take at the last picture. 2016!?!? That seems so crazy!

tammy kay - Congrats to Scott. I think your hair looks great too. 🙂

Leah - So exciting for you! Is Lauren graduating high school now? Is she off to college? I can’t imagine!

Sandy - “In my hair’s defense” … I love it. That made me laugh (but your hair doesn’t look bad!). 🙂

Tanya H - Your hair looked great! I hear ya on the bubble bath…I’m trying to decide how to spend Friday….I could get a lot done, or! I could take the last nap of the school year……hmmmm! 🙂

Cathy - Congrats to Scott! Enjoy your last day and each moment of your kids growing up. It goes by so fast!

Suzanne - that is a funny comment about your hair because just before I read it I was thinking, her hair is cute, I wonder if that would look good on me…

Sarah Wolfe - They look like nice boys… glad he’s had a good year. My oldest will graduate in 2020. And I know it will be here in the blink of an eye. He’s already talking about getting his driver’s license 🙂

Becki - I thought your hair looked great! Congrats Scott! Enjoy your last day to yourself!

Southern Gal - I hate you got blurry pictures, but it makes me feel like there is hope for me knowing someone as talented as you at photography gets a bad shot every now and then. My middle son will graduate from COLLEGE in 2013. I feel really old now.

Robyn Farmer - I was thinking your hair was looking fab!

Whitney - I LOVE it that they wear t-shirts and not those horrible cheap polyester robes for 8th grade. Fiona will be graduating on Thursday and while it is in the air-conditioned high school auditorium, I think caps and gowns are a bit of overkill for 8th grade. That stuff can wait till high school and college! Congratulations to Scott and his parents! I can’t believe how grown up he looks ~ like a different kid from the one we knew just 5 or 6 years ago!

Lauryn - Your hair (and you) looked magnificent, even with 100 mph winds 🙂
Is the craft house a far drive?

Routhie - STOP. Your hair is wonderful. 🙂

another big birthday.

my goofy little annie girl is growing up too darn fast.

IMG_2950-3

for her birthday she got a new coat, sparkly boots, mexican train, sunglasses, a baby doll and a new KU tee.

for her classroom treat she wanted chocolate cupcakes with pink icing and sprinkles.
as i walked through the grocery store with only 1.5 hours left to make those cupcakes i saw in the bakery….
chocolate cupcakes with pink icing and sprinkles.
i was very torn.
i stood there a good five minutes trying to decide if i should just buy them or go home and bake my own.

agony.

i went home and baked my own.
only because i hadn't asked annie what she wanted and
i didn't want to make any mistakes on the treats at the new school.
she said "mom…you can't send them with me…THE MOM comes in and brings the treats at this school!!"
oh my.

IMG_2937-1

IMG_2940-2

i think i did ok….as the new mom with the treats IN the room!!

IMG_3291-8

IMG_3267-3

for annie's party…

her art teacher from her old school came and led CRAFT time.
it was SO good.

Ms. Beth had their complete attention.
she brought Sculpey in lots of colors for each one of the kids.
and showed them how to make a couple of different projects.

IMG_3264-2

IMG_3260-1

they were so quiet.
it was awesome.

IMG_3285-5

IMG_3295-9

IMG_3286-6
it was the best party we have ever had.
no joke.
it was so calm and quiet and fun.
they were mesmerized!

IMG_3321-16

IMG_3319-15
while we had dessert and opened presents Ms. Beth baked the projects so they were finished.
she put them in goodie bags with the kids names on it.

IMG_3315-14

i HIGHLY recommend Beth for your party!
🙂

annie does too.

you can email Ms. Beth at:

byhwdy1 @ sbcglobal . net     (without the spaces of course…..)

you can get in touch with her about all the fun parties at your house!!

you will LOVE it.

IMG_3306-11
annie decided on parfaits instead of cake and ice cream.
we layered chocolate cake, chocolate pudding, mini marshmallows, whipped cream and mini chocolate chips.

IMG_3309-12
and topped it of with an oreo.

Y U M M M M M M M M M M M M M.

and it was easy for them to bring home what they couldn't finish too.

IMG_3311-13

IMG_3328-17

her friends gave her craft kits and a set of legos.
she was PUMPED.

Happy Birthday to my 7 year old sweet pea.

wait….how can my BABY be 7???

this means that it's been seven years since i have had a newborn in my house?
7 years since i have nursed a baby!?
7 years since i fed a baby in the dark while watching informercials on low volume??
7 years since i have searched for a paci under a crib?
7 years since i held a bottle with my right hand into the back seat while driving with my left hand in the front??
so long ago.

seven years old is pretty great too.

have you heard of the Bounce Dryer Bar?
i reviewed one over here…come read about it and enter to win $50  VISA gift card!

AND go check out the posts about our craft weekend sponsors on the CW blog….HERE.

honeybeemama - oh my goodness, i love this post! and i love your blog. i wanted to let you know i included your blog and this post in my mama monday mom blog highlights today: http://www.honeybeemama.com/2011/11/mama-monday-mom-blog-highlights.html
i hope you’ll stop by, and have a great day!

se7en - It can’t be Annie’s birthday already, again… I tell you it is impossible!!! What a fabulous party!!! And I love her desert!!! Pinned it!!! Have a fab year young lady!!!

Kat - Oh my heart just feels for you right now, because I have gone through this exact thing yesterday for my youngests b’day. She is my baby, #4 and turned three yesterday!!(sob)
I am really grieving the end of all of this, so much so I am almost contemplating taking the plunge for just.one.more. However I just don’t know if I can do one more and I am going to be 40 in April, so maybe I will just be sad with you and also celebrate this new stage.
I also think you are awesome to have gone home and baked those cupcakes. Girl after my own hear.
I have been so busy baking lately -4 b’days within 6 weeks and I am all baked out. Cakes for school, cakes for home, cakes for the party.Yikes!!
Well done to you and happy b’day to little Miss Annie, who will always be your baby, just like my three year old Ruby 🙂

Annika - Happy Birthday to Annie!!!

Sonia - Awesome birthday party! Do you always have the bunting up? Or was it just for the party?

4FabFranklins - What a great party! …and those parfaits, yummy!

Kerry - oh I am LOVING the idea of this quiet party…. Looks awesome-o.
Happy Birthday Sweet Annie :)) xxx

Londen - Happy Birthday to your adorable Annie! She looks so big with her adult teeth coming in. My one and only baby will be six this spring. I see moms with babies and I think…I used to have one of those…where did she go? It’s kind of cruel.:)

the whyte house - 7?!?! happy birthday, annie!! cute party!
(blasted…that means mine is 6 in a month. sigh. well, fine. :))
i picked up that polka dot outfit, too. i was checking out and i thought, “10 bucks says meg’s found this, too.” ha. i wish i’d actually said that outloud so someone would pay me $10 now….

Laura Phelps - 7 IS a great year
I think I peaked at 7
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANNIE!!!!!
impossible to see a craft, rainbow, or pink cupcake with sprinkles and NOT think of YOU
aren’t I the lucky one…I got to meet you and sleep in your home and wake up to cute you and have breakfast!
love from all of us h ere in CT!

Lindsay - So funny when I read that you made the cupcakes. Here in Seattle about 99% of schools won’t let you bring in homemade treats, they have to be store-bought. Made me nostalgic for my Midwest roots again. 🙂
LOVE the craft party! Amazing.

Valerie @ Chateau A La Mode - Happy Birthday little Miss Annie….7 years is great and I had to laugh at feeding the baby watching infomercials. That’s how I started watching QVC…in the dark, with low voluming while nursing and now I watch it in the light with volume up while feeding myself 🙂

jacqui anderson - wow! happy birthday annie!!! i feel like I know your sweet annie and she has grown so incredibly much since i first started reading your blog. maybe i will get to meet her if i am chosen for craft weekend (hint hint!!!!)

julie - Happy 7 to Annie! My youngest turned 7 over the summer… so hard to believe! Your parfaits look so good!

Jolene (Homespun Heritage) - Aww! Happy Birthday Annie! My youngest little guy will be 7 in just 10 days. Fun times!

karen - very nice! happy birthday sweet annie.

Valerie - Wow, LOTS of party inspiration here!!! Happy Birthday to your baby!

Alice H - Happy 7th birthday! Those parfaits look yummy. I am going to make them, tomorrow!!
I am so jealous you guys get to take homemade treats to her school. We aren’t allowed to take them to the public schools my children attend.

TinaM. - Isn’t funny how you have to learn birthday etiquette, lol. Love the birthday party idea.

Jenn - Happy birthday sweet Annie! And good call on the parfaits… They look awesome. 🙂

tiffany gardner - Happy Birthday sweet little one! Thanks for sharing with us!

Kristen - Loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove the parfaits. Love.

ivy - Hey, it’s probably only been 6 years since you did all that stuff since you probably did it for about a year! 🙂 My youngest of 5 is 5! I can’t believe it either.
Love your blog. It’s beautiful.

Jodi @ The Un-Soccermom Blog - happy, happy birthday annie!!! 🙂

Casey - Seriously….cutest party idea ever.

Wendy - HaPpY bIrThDaY aNnIe … God Bless!

Lori Austin - Looks like Miss Annie had a super birthday.

Btw, the cupcakes look so pretty and the party dessert – yum!!

Gabriela - Oh lovely!! Feliz cumpleaños Annie!

Lisa - Hoppy Birdy Two Ewe, Annie!!!!!!

Nicole B. - What a GREAT idea for a birthday party! And I LOVE Annie’s “7” shirt. I may have to make those for my kids! Happy Birthday Annie! 🙂

karen gerstenberger - Happy Birthday to Annie!

Leah - Wow, 7 years old! I know how you feel. My baby is turning 4 tomorrow. As excited as I am for her, I’m also sad that’s getting old! She’s not a baby anymore. It’s crazy! And tomorrow, I too will be the mom bringing in the treats to her class.

Alicia @ La Famille - happy day, annie! what a sweet party! ms. beth seems like a great trade-off for a creepy clown 🙂

Polderkolder - Happy birthday, Annie!

Mindy Harris - awwww, 7 years old!! how precious. i just started working with that sculpey stuff making pretty rose pendants. it’s very fun and they look like those cabochon flowers that are all the rage.
the oreos look divine!!!
i used to drive and bottle feed simultaneously, too.
we have 2 babies. as a mom of 5, do you think we should have one more? i go back/forth..

andrea - Sigh. Can so relate. My baby boy turns 7 next week. Seven.

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - Happy, happy birthday dear Annie!

Ashlyn@Pinecone - What a great party…love the sculpey crafts!! She looks so cute in the top pic looking at her cake.
Since we are listing…13 years since I searched for a nuk in the dark sigh! xo

Rach - Oh yeah, and it’s nice to hear that I’m not the only one who still does all the things you listed from 7 years ago with my 6 month old. Thank you for reminding me that despite how exhausted I am right now that I will miss all of that when he is older.

Rach - OK, my daughter JUST insisted on chocolate cupcakes with pink icing… and when grandma came to visit this week, they made them. Yum. 🙂

Heather - “””7 years since i fed a baby in the dark while watching informercials on low volume??”””
This has been my most common reflection on those early months of young motherhood! It’s surprising I never actually bought a magic bullet!

Sarah Wolfe - Wow! My baby just turned 3 and I’m already feeling it… feeling that he is going to grow up way too fast…

Seriously Sassy Mama - I love those ideas! What a fun birthday party!

Mary Susan McConnell - Great photos! That party looks amazing!!

Kerstie - A quiet birthday party…… who new! 😉

Holly - wow! 7! She is getting so big!

friday ramblings….

IMG_7806-1-2

mmmmmmm……sweet baby emmet.
i love his name.
and he was dreamy.

IMG_7815-2

have you noticed our lack of craft thursdays???
my kids have.
i realize that is a sign of having too much on my plate.
i just can’t do it.
and with so many sports practices we just don’t have the time.

BUT once the photo season is done for me….27 more days….i will be able to do it.
football will end.
volleyball will end.
we will have more time at home….i hope.
and craft thursdays will return.

annie just came up with her own project instead.

IMG_7874-3-2

lauren’s volleyball team is so much fun to watch.
they are serious.
they hit so hard….i would never stand on the other side of them!

IMG_7865-2-2
there is BIG NEWS at our house…..
IMG_7887-4-2

ANNIE can TIE HER SHOES!!!
she was so excited to tell me.
she kept saying “daddy is going to be so proud of me!!!”   🙂
pretty darn cute.

IMG_7838-1-2

she came home from school yesterday with this face.
i said “you have a mustache”
and she smiled so big and announced “YES!!! my friend did it with marker FOR FREE!!!!”

well ok…as long as you didn’t pay for it.
oh annie.

………………………………………….

chelsea - Where did you find your sign in the back ground of your picture? the grey sign that has family rules on it/ I love it!

leonieke - pffff.. it’s a relieve to hear something is not going your way ( crafty thursdays) you still sound like a miracle mother to me! making beautifull pictures of your own children and others.. enjoying your daughters sport, and still visit lots of blogs and write your own. wow..
this dutch girl is still impressed. 🙂

Heather G. - Go Annie!! And I’m dying that “the mustache was free.”

Kimberly Dial - Emmet is soooo cute! I loved volleyball in high school (I feel certain I’d die if I tried to play now! 😉 I love your Craft Thursdays so I’ll be glad when you have more time 😉 and that Annie is a girl after my own heart. I have a feeling (a strong one!) that my oldest granddaughter Emily & her are kindred spirits! Gotta love ’em!

Shaina Brown - Love a sweet little baby named Emmet, my “baby” Emmett just turned 3. The volleyball pics make me miss my glory days, love that she isn’t wearing knee pads! And Annie? what can you say, it was free after all!

Michelle - ahhhh. . . it wasn’t even a year ago you were taking pictures of my sweet babe & that sweet Emmett makes me want to rewind to clock (or get pregnant!) Love Annie’s stash. . .too funny!

Valerie @ Chateau A la Mode - Heehee Annie…way cute!

Lori Austin - Hip hip hooray! Good job Annie! We just celebrated this milestone at our house too. I think our girls are close in age. Fun times!
Lauren looks so intense.
The baby pics are about more than I can take. Why did we stop at 2????? Sniff….
Happy weekend.

Christine H - Hi! I’ve been searching your website for awhile tonight trying to find out where you got that print on the top of the cabinet that Annie is painting in front of (see 2nd photo from the top on this post). It has all the words/sentences on it like “use kind words” ” be considerate” etc. I know that you’ve probably mentioned it before but I had no luck finding a source reference. If you wouldn’t mind sharing I’d appreciate it! thanks!

Jenny B. - Yay that Annie can tie her shoes! We’ve been working on that at our house too. I’ll have to show my 6yo son this post. Maybe knowing that Annie can do it will give him a little boost. 🙂 So funny about the “free” moustache! Has she read the book Moosetache? It’s funny. 🙂

Jenna@CallHerHappy - O my gosh! Annie cracks me up. She has an eye for a deal.
Jenna

Angie G. - I love the photo of Emmet – we can’t wait to see them all!! Thank you so much! Angie

Tracy Fisher - If we lived closer I’d let you in on our whacky carpool! haha. It’s one of those carpools where everyone starts texting each other by 3pm trying to figure out how to get all of the kids to their sports… and trying to get a night off every once in awhile to make a nice dinner…haha.
Love the baby in the photo!
tracy fisher

Kat - Oh gosh that little baby Emmet makes me want to have #5 now!!
Annie is so sweet – love the moustache and that Lauren, she is gorgeous. (Oh to have toned legs and a butt like that!!! You go girl!)
I so get why you are so busy all the time and I only have 4, but wow it is always busy!!

shauna - that top baby pic!
aaaaghh!
so great.
you are so great.
even without crafts.

Ashlyn@Pinecone - Ooooohhhh that sweet babe!!!!!! Happy weekending!

Tanya H - I love the links you share, gets me thinking about gift-giving!

heather - friends that give free mustaches are THE best kind of friends.
happy weekend!

This Farm Family's Life - We haven’t been doing very many crafts either. My oldest has been begging me. We finally made spiders last night. Ready for things to slow down also.

seriouslysassymama - Your Annie should get together with my Abby. They would totally hit it off! Oh baby Emmett. I would almost ask for the Doc to untie my tubes for a cutie like that.

Kimberlee Jost - Yay, Annie!
So glad she didn’t pay for the mustache.
Tell her I’ll give her one for free, too. 😉

Elaine Entz - oh good… now for the rest of us moms who rarely do crafts with our kids, we can feel less guilty 🙂
love love love that b/w print behind the globes. did i see that at kitchen corner?
lauren’s fun to watch… great to see her blooming in her volleyball talents…

Sarah - What type of lens/settings do you use for the volleyball pictures. I’m trying to get better pictures of my daughters games. Thanks!!

Ashley - that picture of emmet? my ovaries hurt. thanks for that. 🙂

Jodi @ The Un-Soccermom Blog - Baby Emmett is a dream!
Love the VB shots! Lauren looks fierce!
Annie is cute as always!

ingrid lapp - I just found your blog about a week ago and have spent a lot of time reading thru all of your old posts. Very enjoyable….however the laundry piled up and we didn’t eat very good meals 🙂
ps. loved every one of them

Jen Brandt - LOVE…Annie’s moustache and sweet baby Emmet. Have a wonderful weekend, Meg!

Jennifer - Oh my goodness, Emmet is one handsome dude! Beautiful photograph.

Kate B. - Lauren’s not wearing knee pads. How tough is that girl?

Holly - cute little Annie!

happygirl - Such a precious baby. LOVE the free mustache. LOVE the kids noticing the crafting is missing. It lets me know they LOVE it and it’s not just a photo op. Things like this are what make you the authentic and special blogger you are. 🙂

can we keep him???

it all began when the girls came home and found a kitty on our porch.
and at the same moment sean opened the door to come outside….and waffle about knocked him down
PLOWING PAST to get at that cat.
the cat BOLTED and the girls were SQUEALING…..it was instant chaos.
waffle gone.
girls running and yelling.
and the cat UP IN A TREE.

"WE HAVE TO SAVE HIM MOM!!!!"

we got waffle dog back inside…..and the girls coaxed the kitty down….and the questions begin
"can we keep him?"
"PLEEEEEEEEASE???"
"he can sleep in my room!!"

but that kitty, Sunshine as it was named, devoured the ham slices.

in my old age i am finally able to say
"no girls…we cannot keep him….but you can play with him anytime he stops by"

in the past…. i would have wavered.
i would have caved and tried to figure out HOW we could keep this cat.
no more.
we do not need a cat.

i do not want a cat.

i want a baby.
but not a cat.

:)

and he did come back the next day.
and got more ham.
of course.

elisa - Cute cat- but Waffle would eat it. And then your kids would cry.
Tell me about the baby….

mrs. may - tee hee! He is a cutie pie.
I think ham is ok… I once fed a stray cat leftover pork tenderloin 🙂

Jenn Thomas - Oh My! At first I thought that was MY cat, Turman but he is much too young. I was about to tell you to send him back home 🙂 but I don’t think he wanders much past Amy’s house. Cute post – it is hard to say no – London wanted to bring back some tadpoles from the waterfall on Sunday, we left them there for others to find. By the way – they also saw 2 snakes – so watch out when you go.

Heather - Our dog chased a kitten into a tree, and my HUSBAND begged to keep him. Ugh! Ironically, the cat became immediately smitten with me. I think kitty knew who he had to kiss up to in order to stay!

Kimberly Dial - I bet he remembers where the ham came from & visits often!

Kimberly Dial - I bet he remembers where the ham came from & visits often!

crystal b. - Oh I loved this. You are such a nice mom. I am a cat hater and that little thing would not get ham at my house. 🙂

Amy Slavik - Hilarious! We’ve got two cats if you ever want to borrow them. However, we live in MN 🙂 Good for you for saying no, it’s not always easy!

deborah@applesinwonderland - sunshine is darling. we had a neighborhood kitty named *moonlight* for years. he didn’t technically belong to us, but we loved him just he same. i could go for one more kitty (we have 2) but i’m done with having babies–my uterus is closed for business.;)

Jennifer S. - Aw, that is so sweet. Im not a cat person, but there does seem to be something special about that cat. And…what a great idea…”you can play with him anytime he stops by”. love it.

ann - I would keep the kitty but I’m a sucker for cuteness.

julia - stay strong…keep the faith…just say no..

Terrie - Reminds me of when my parents gave my daughter 5, FIVE!!, kittens for her 5th birthday! Without asking…good thing we lived on the farm! 🙂

Heather R. - That looks like our “big, fat, kitty baby’s” young, thinner, cousin…ha! Good call. I love cats. BUT I think I’m good with one pet at a time. Cute pics.

nichole shinners - yes, no old lady comments at 35 please.. I am 35! And I am adopting my third baby! ( babies keep you young 🙂 Good job on the no kitty.. but I agree with the above comments if you feed sunshine she will be back. That is how I had my kitty.. she was a stray that stayed outside and I fed her everyday and she stuck around for years! Her name was meowers. 😉

Kat - I can so relate to the baby comments!!
Does this mean you are going to add #6 in some form to your beautiful family?
Not sure I can do #5, the heart is willing but the body is saying “nah I am tired from the 4 I already have!!”
Will keep following with interest to see if you let us know if there will be a #6. 🙂

melissa - I think you now have a cat…even if only as a visitor. Never FEED the cat…they will never leave again.

linda lou - what a beautiful, cute, adorable kitty he’s so pretty….if I didn’t have Regis and Kelly my two cats I would adopt him 🙂 linda
ps: don’t tell Regis and Kelly that 🙁

Anj - Yeah, I’ve notice the baby comments too… hope you share soon! 🙂

Jenny Joy - OH. MY. Every time we make a trip to the pet store for dog food/treats/etc., inevitably, someone in my posse wants to add a new pet to our household. A new hamster! A new fishy! A kitty! A snake! I have absolutely no trouble saying, “Absolutely, positively NOT.” But a baby? That’s a different story. (Which is why we have FOUR.)

Mindy Harris - gorgeous cat. i’m sure one of your million blog readers will rescue the kitty!
i kinda want a baby too but we need to wait. story just turned one.

Sarah @ This Farm Family's Life - That is the best kind of pet. One that will go away, but come back for playtime with the kids…or maybe it’s just the ham.
http://www.thisfarmfamilyslife.blogspot.com

Becky - I hear ya (on both counts).

Rach - Might I add to the adorable kitty post that you have a beautiful lawn and I am envious. We currently have a dirt patch out back. 🙂

Sandy - Adorable pictures, as always.
Our one time with, “can we PLEASE keep him?” was saved by my daughter sneezing and her eyes getting itchy. I’m sorry for her, but so happy at the same time that we learned on that day that she’s allergic to cats. 🙂

Georgia - Ohhh no you did the fatal feed the kitty and he will keep coming back! he/she looks very healthy so im sure it has a loving family 🙂
xx

steph - we’ve had similar cat issues.
luckily i have worked hard to not get suckered in.
man, do i love little kittens though.
it’s SO hard to resist keeping them.
but i keep telling myself this mantra, “they will turn into cats… and i hate cats”
ha ha ha ha!
so far, it has worked.
and yeah… what’s up with these baby comments?!
whatever you guys are planning for your family, i hope the best for you.
i’ve had baby fever lots lately.
my BFF is preggo right now… and our last 3 kids were the same age.
so with her having a baby and me not having one, it feels kinda weird.
if hubby was on board, absolutely…
but he’s not.
and i have to be ok with that.
3 kids are great!
maybe, just maybe, we’ll adopt one day.
we need to add a boy to this gaggle of girls we got! 😉

Tiffany - I love your cryptic baby messages. 🙂 You certainly do the mom gig awesomely…and with style! I so appreciate the gift of siblinghood you are giving all your babies!

Laura Phelps - I would have totally caved
that kitty is beautiful…like the sunshine:-)
I have a feeling the cat is yours…

Lorilee - I love cats. My 16 year old brought a very young kitten home the weekend before school was out. He found it in a ditch as he was driving home. We went back and knocked on all the nearby doors looking for the owner. We ended up with kitten milk replacement formula and a bottle. I took it to school with me the last week so I could feed it every 4-5 hours. He started at 11 oz and is now 24 oz. He is very attached to me and so loveable. I’ve been posting picts of him.
Blessings,
Lorilee

amy b. - We’ve been feeding a little stray fluffy black kitten at our house! Who knows where he came from, but, I don’t want a cat either! But, yes, I would take another baby in a second! My little one turned one in April and I have a 14 yr old son! Love the pics of the cat-maybe you could squeeze in some pet photography sessions!LOL!

Jennifer Dawn - You know what the say about cats…feed them once and they will keep coming back. Sounds like you might have a new addition to the family.
Anymore little additions coming–the human kind? 🙂

amy d - i saw him hanging in your yard the other day, but i secretly said to myself, “please don’t show up at my house!” you know me, i would cave! …he is very cute though!
…and i vote with the girls that YOU should keep him. 🙂

Shannon - I don’t think Waffle wanted that cat either, he might have eaten him 🙂 Sunshine is a cute cat though!

Valerie @ Chateau A La Mode - Oh my girls and I love kitties, but hubby and the dog don’t, so that kind of answers that. We’ve had a couple of strays try to sweet talk us into keeping them, and us girls are such sofites we would love to keep them all and if we did we’d probably have a house full of cats by now 🙂

Moriah - Ah yes, I been the child in this situation. You know feeding adorable Sunshine will mean he comes back, but he doesn’t have to live in your house. Bonus!

karen - Wow…sunshine is so majestic looking!
I did the same thing recently…with an adorable red headed kitten. The husband insisted..but with a 4 year old, 1 year old and a Weimaraner (who was not very fond of him) I said NO!
I’m thrilled I found a good home for him… a girl who just lost her daddy needed a friend…and she was redheaded too!
I love your pics!

sarah - LOVE cats. i hope sunshine sticks around and has regular guest appearances.

Stacy M - I think you should have a baby. I sorry I don’t know you but from reading your blog I feel like I do. You have a great family and lots of love to give a baby. My husband and I are having a baby in August. Our only child is 12 he will be 13 in August and we have just decided that we want a bigger family. It sure is different this time around at 34 years old (35 in August). We are loving it, and our son is so excited to be having a baby sister.

Melissa - That looks just like Pioneer Woman’s Kitty Kitty!

happygirl - Thanks for the pics. There CANNOT be enough kitten pics on the internet. And, attaboy mom. No, you can’t keep it. Good for you. Too bad for Waffle, no fun chase games anymore. 🙂

alicia @ la famille - i’m not a cat girl…i would have put the kabosh on that too 🙂 but i do kinda want a baby, too…what’s up with that? is that feeling ever going away?

Dawn - Good for you on not “adopting” the cat! We once had cats that adopted us for awhile. They would come to our door, we would feed them, and then they would disappear until the next time. They truly thought they were our cats, but we didn’t own them. One day…they just stopped coming, which was good because cat food was getting expensive. 🙂

Sarah @ Handbags*N*Pigtails - Ok so are we talking you want to be pregnant and have a baby? Or are you thinking about adopting? Im thinking Amy’s adoption has you thinking….am I right?
Love the kitty. We have one here who comes and goes as he pleases. I would love one that likes to cuddle:)
xo

Esther - Oh my….I have a true story for you. My friends in Palm Springs had 9 stray cats show up one by one to their door steps, all they did was feed one and they most of told the rest of them, they never let them in the house just outside and just some love and food. They became attached to 3 of them, they moved down the street and one by one they all followed them to the new house, the other night one got his leg messed up by something (bite) they took him to the vet and spent a fortune on this cat. Make sure that this kitty doesn’t have buddies around to go and tell….LOL

Leah - That’s how it started with the cats we have now. I thought I was being nice by feeding the poor abandoned mamma cat. Next thing I knew, she and her six newly-born kittens had moved to our side yard. Mamma cat and one of her kittens are now permanent residents in this house. Yes, I’m a sucker!

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - Oh, he is adorable!!

Tam - wow, you were strong 🙂 good job! beautiful cat! I really want a cat..no babies…but I know how much attention a cat needs…at this point, not gonna happen, I have a FT job, two kids, 1 dog and 13 chickens

Emily Langston - How can you resist those whiskers…. Male, Yellow cats are the BEST! You never know… he may be going around for “ham” at more than one house!

Kelsey I - That cat looks like P-Dub’s cat!

Jenna - aw c’mon, mom! keep him 🙂
Jenna

Jacci - Ha ha. You’re a ROCK. Look at you being strong! But, please don’t say “In my old age” – I’m 35, too!!!!
And pregnant, by the way 😉
I *think* I know what you’re thinking, though, and it doesn’t involve pregnancy 😉 I’ll pray for you guys.

jess - you are one strong momma…you didn’t cave!!! i think its funny that sunshine likes ham considering he seems to be a ham in front of the camera!!!

Alice H - ya what is up with all your wanting a baby comments?? are you going to have one?? I love babies! I would seriously have 4 more if I could possibly afford them. And have the room for them. But I also like the ones I can love on and send away 🙂 I love cats. They are so much easier than dogs.

tara pollard pakosta - ha! I want a baby too, but not a cat!
never a cat, I have cat phobia! ICK!
I Hope you are going to have another baby!
by the way, did you finish the 30 day shred?!
not me! 3 days maybe less and I quit!
but good news I have walked/jogged 62 miles so far in the month
of June!
tara

Niki - That’s funny…I don’t want anymore cats or babies! LOL

Mrs. - 4 days before our move from Cincinnati to Pittsburgh, my girls found a momma kitty and 4 babies. They begged, and pleaded, and cried some more. But we did not have time for 5 kitties. We adopted two out, and gave the rest to the shelter. It was hard to resist, because they were kittens, and no one can resist a kitten. We stayed firm though, because our life is crazy enough, without a kitten or 5!

Kate S. - Hmm . . . babies seem to be cropping into a lot of your posts lately. I’m starting to wonder . . .

Holly - I do want a cat but no more babies! ha! Cute post!

my grandmother loves to garden.
her yard has always been gorgeous.
when she comes to visit me she always does a walk around my yard and tells me what is planted…
points to what is coming up…..she knows so much.

so i cut my peonies and put them in the vase she gave me.

my dad goes to visit my grandma every morning and has been reading my blog to her.
he said they even watched the video of me and the lipstick…HA HA HA.
she has gotten to see the baby birds and now she gets to see my garden!

hi grandma!

when i was a little girl i remember picking strawberries in her yard…near the door of the fence.
i loved to play in the sand box.
but my favorite thing to do was to rock/bounce on her metal chairs around a round table in the grass.

don't you love to go back in your memories to times that are warm and fuzzy?

i have more flowers to plant….gotta go.

🙂

oh yeah….baby #2 is here.
and #3 is cracking out of it's egg with in the morning for sure…..
IMG_2262-1

these are robins….in case you didn't know.
and here is our set up to observe our babies.

IMG_2052-1

i guess i should also clean the porch today.

Kelly - The peonies are beautiful and I am in awe of the baby bird photos! Thank you for sharing and Go God!
Question: I was at the Horticultural Arts Society plant sale this weekend and eyeing the peonies. One of the volunteers told me that they attract a lot of ants. Do you find that to be true? Kelly

Melissa - I love peonies and am anxiously awaiting mine blooming. So jealous yours already are!

Janie - Don’t the mama and papa birds dive at you when you walk under the nest? Years ago I looked into a robin’s nest and then every I went by they were diving at me and really after me. You are so lucky.

Julie K - I am loving your baby robin pictures. They are amazing. You could sell them! 🙂
I’m also very jealous of how far along your spring is … my poor garden is just peeking it’s head out … and I’m anticipating two peonies for the first time this year!! Beautiful!!!

Staci - Simply spectacular 🙂 Love em 🙂 And congrats on baby bird #2!!!!! I’m planting strawberries today….I’ll think of your grandma….and I’ll think of my poppa’s HUGE garden I used to “help” him with 🙂 sigh…..

Jacqui - love your flowers …. wow it looks beautiful and warm and sunny where you are …. the snow has finally melted up here in Fernie BC although its on 7degrees Celsius here at the moment and there’s a frost on the ground. we hope summer is coming soon 🙂

Kim Barlow - Lovliness…pure and simple.

Erin - your blog totally cracks me up – absolutely love it!

chasity - peonies make me so happy….
lots of good memories wrapped up in those beautiful petals.
your photos of them are superb!

Jess - I drove by your house this week and your flowers looked so pretty. My peonies just started blooming and I LOVE them too. Definitely my favorite. Oh, and the bird pictures are awesome. 🙂

Jen Brandt - God is at work right in your yard and on your porch. Absolutely beautiful pictures. Thank you for brightening my day!

Karma - Gorgeous … I also love the back-lit, light pink peony photo … about took my breath away, sooo beautiful! These photos seriously made me wish I had a yardful of peonies! The baby birds are amazing, thank you for sharing your peeks of the peeps with us! 🙂

elisa - love the bird picture!!

BULLYMAMA - What a beautiful collection of Peony’s you have. Mine are a week or 2 away from blooming. Unfortunately they always seem to bloom around Memorial Day when we are away and when I get back rain and wind tend to make them disappear way too fast. I saw on Martha Stewart last year that you can actually freeze the buds just before they bloom and take them out of the freezer as needed. I thought that was such a great idea that we ordered about 8 more plants last year so we can give it a try. I’m not sure of the specifics but if you search Martha and Peony’s I’m sure you can find the info if you are interested!
I too enjoy stories of your grandmother. I feel so blessed to have had mine in my life she was a great influence and still a big part of who I am today.

Deanna - You’ll have to let me know how you keep your peonies bug free. Mine get covered with ants! UG!

Toni :O) - Thank you for taking me back to my house I grew up in and remembering the beautiful peonies that lined our driveway each Springtime. I LOVED those bushes and my mom had many of them alongside our drive. It was SO pretty! I really should plant some of those myself, they are gorgeous! Loved the baby birds pic too…awesome especially since I unfortunately saw a dead baby bird (a robin) on my neighbor’s driveway this evening…sniff, sniff. Happy Spring to you…hopefully it shows up in Michigan one of these days…sheesh! Oh, and I’m SO envious of your beautiful porch…sigh!

meghan - Your peonies pics are so pretty. I made one my screensaver. thank you. and you need to send those baby birdie pics to national geographics or something. they are amazing.

Shelby - I think I need to go buy some peonies and plant them right this minute. Yours are absolutely gorgeous!

Kirsten P - Great photos of beautful flowers. I especially love the 7th photo – sunlight filtering through the green leaves of the light
pink peony plant.
We don’t have a nest in our yard but I’ve been watching nest cams online of baby eagles (almost ready to fly away, baby bluebirds who flew away on Sunday, and baby loons who will hatch in a couple weeks.

Leslie - Beautiful flowers!!!
I’m following the birds too . . .

The BabbyMama - Ooh, I can’t wait until my peonies bloom!

Andrea T - crazy. i just posted a pic of the peonies i purchased today!!! i cant grow them bc my husband is alregic to bees. love THEM though

Shirley - Your pictures are awesome. Peonies, or pinies, as my mother and grandmother used to call them are one of my favorites. They bring back many childhood memories. I’m not very lucky in raising them so will enjoy your photos instead! Thanks for sharing.

Sara - Your peonies (or panties as I used to call them as a child…) make me smile! They are gorgeous, so so beautiful. They are never that good in Atlanta, so I enjoy your pictures. wish your pictures were scratch and sniff…

Liza Morgan - peonies are my favorite! what lovely photos. happy day.

Dawn - Your poenies are beautiful! I wish I could grow them down here in South Texas but it is too hot. And I am glad I to see I am not the only one that has a messy porch sometimes. haha…By the way loved all the colorful images from the other day. Make you feel happy.
Dawn

julia - Oh my goodness!!! If anyone ever asks me “Julia, what are you missing out on by not living in Kansas?” I’m going to say “Seeing Miss Meg’s garden in person.”

sara @ it's good to be queen - they’re gorgeous. nothing smells better than a peony. yum.

Jodi - I really loved the pictures of your peonies! My grandma loved peonies and grew them all around her yard. After she passed away last February, I dug up some of her plants and transplanted them to my yard. I am so happy that they survived, and two of them even
have buds on them!

Nicole - I love peonies!! I wish I would have planted them years ago. Our small town restaurant had a vase of them on their counter yesterday. I about died with the beauty of it. Not really, but could have. 😉

Dana@Strawberrytart! - I am SOOOO Jealous!!! I love peonies, but I don’t think they can grow in Texas.

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - As I sat down after lunch… I said in my head… ‘ok, meg, make me smile.’ And LOOK! You did it! hugs to you!

Prudence - my sister and I just had a discussion yesterday on how to pronounce them, so which is it? peoooohhhhnies or peuuuhhnies?? I grew up saying the first, but now everyone corrects me with the second!

Wendy - Love, love, love the Peonies!! I so wish we could grow them in the south! Enjoy your beautiful flowers and sweet little porch visitors. 🙂

Mindy Harris - i have been anticipating your peonies post. my friend has scads in her yard and always gives me some.
it makes me thankful for the intricacies God chose when he made them. the same careful, thoughtful design-work when he made me.

amber - Your flowers are beautiful.
We have a martin nest on our porch with 3 hungry babies inside.
I love remembering the fun I had climbing my Nana’s tree, eating her snacks, rollerblading at my Naw & Grandaddy’s, & enjoying their snuggles. My Nana’s the only one on this side of heaven now. Grandparents are definitely a taste of heaven…praying for yours.

Gemma - They are really nice flowers…perfect for a wedding!
Gemma x

steph - ahhhhhh!
i SOO love peonies!!
they are also my favorite.
they bloom here in june so we still have to wait a bit.
but they are so beautiful.
are you getting ants all around though?
that’s the one bad thing…
peonies inside=ants!
ewww!
and i love to hear about your g’ma.
i only have one grandparent left and i love her so.
i have so many fabulous memories of being small and hanging at her and my grandpa’s house too.
now you’re taking me on a trip down memory lane.
loves it!
enjoy those peonies… and those baby birdies!
they are kinda strangely cute, huh?

andrea - I love my peonies too! How do you get all the ants off yours to bring them in the house? My grandma had peonies and I brought some to this house. They split really easily and well. You are so lucky that your grandma is still alive. Mine has been with the Lord almost 20 years and I still miss her very much! (I am tearing up just thinking of missing her.)
Also, please don’t clean your porch! It makes me feel better to know someone else’s looks like mine. 😉

Sarah Wolfe - The flower pics are gorgeous. What lens did you use when you took them?

Valerie @ Chateau A La Mode - So sad I can’t grow Peonies in SoCal…they are seriously the most gorgeous flower ever. Yours are so pretty and I love your memories of your Grandma…grandmas are special.

Debbie Hargadon - There are no ants in those peonies! Your weather must have been great lately. I love them. My little girl memory of peonies was dropping their flower petals in weddings I was in when I was small – 4 or 5. We would always practice with peony petals and have pretend weddings from that point on. I’ve tried growing them in zone 14 in the Bay Area of California. The bush will grow but never flower. After a few seasons of that – the bush got pulled out. No flowers – no stay. 🙂 Thanks for a blast of spring! Peonies mean birthdays (mine) and mother’s day to me. They are tied up in all my May/June memories — along with LILACS!

lauren - Flowers = Pure Happiness!

Beth - Kansas has some of the prettiest peonies I’ve ever seen (brother used to live in kc). Wish I could grow them here! they’re some of my very favorite flowers. What do you do to get rid of the ants, or do you just live with them?
You all have a great view for those little birdies!

Anna - #1… my fave thing about that picture is that your porch looks like a normal person’s porch… thank you!
#2… has the momma bird gotten angry at you? we had a turtle dove nest on our porch and we got too curious and we were chased by angry momma bird.
#3… you rock. that’s it.
🙂

Lisa - Those baby birds look a little like miniature aliens. 🙂 But the whole thing is quite amazing isn’t it?
What a great relationship you have with your grandmother. I’m so thankful for the way my own parents are such wonderful grandparents to my kids.

SoCalLynn - I live in Southern California. That means no peonies. I *dream* of a day when I can grow peonies, but I don’t think we’re moving any time soon.
Love the pictures of the tiny robins with their mouths open!

Emily - I can almost smell them!! Thanks for sharing!

jodi @ back40life - gorgeous – love the peonies! I have 2 that bloom and bought 2 more this year…I just hate that the blooms don’t seem to last long. I keep thinking I need to look for a tree peony but have yet to find one.
love all the flower eye candy!!

Alisha - Your pictures are BEAUTIFUL!!! I love the intense color and can almost SMELL them!

Molly - I love peonies! and your are gorgeous!! My husband and I just dug a bunch out of a flower bed at my parents farm that had become over run with weeds! I could not let them go:)

Sheila P. - Megan – your blog is my happy place. Thanks for sharing your flower pictures today!

Kate - LOVE the pictures! Please make some into HUGE prints and put them in your etsy shop. Or just send them to my house. 🙂 We have several of my great-grandmother’s peonies but they’re not quite ready to bloom yet. By the way – Betsy Kate’s pictures are super sweet. Thanks!

Chantelle - i.love.peonies. why don’t we have them here in zone 8/9??? i would so steal your peonies too! And i love that your porch looks like that. 🙂

Amy - Wow!! Your pictures and garden are amazing!!

Hannah - I absolutely love peonies! They are my all time favourite flower. I love them in the bud stage, so tightly wrapped up, carefully concealing the beauty beneath. Then when they burst open – they’re so huge! It’s yet another part of God’s beautiful creation that makes me smile. Thank you for sharing your beautiful photos.
And the baby robins? How incredible that you and your family have such an insight into their precious little lives : )

Jill - All your photos are lovely, but the one of the back-lit, light pink peony in the sunshine stopped me in my tracks- GORGEOUS!
And I’m loving the baby robin photos. I never knew their eggs are so blue! I love nature. =)

Irene - Be careful the kids don’t scare the Mommy bird away from the nest and make her reject her young – v important that they don’t touch or freak out the mother.

Mindy W - Oh, I’m enjoying! And cursing myself for only having 1 peony plant when I LOVE them.

mandy madison - Thanks for sharing! I love peonies and they are the main flower in my upcoming wedding 🙂

Laura A - I got married 2 weeks ago and carried peonies…they are my favorite too! I hope to plant a yard full of them one day!

Ali Richardson - WOW!!! I have serious Peopny envy!! SO gorgeous!!! And those little baby birds, my goodness! So sweet!

karen - Love the mohawk on the one bird!
Hi Grandma!! How sweet of your grand daughter to post this today…you must be one special grandma. xoxox

Dana @ Bungalow'56 - Your birdie pictures are awesome. Love that Grandma is reading your blog. Just makes my heart melt.
Dana

deborah@applesinwonderland - gorgeous photos. the memories of time spent with my grands are the best. i heard that peonies require ants to help them open. is that true? ask your grandma, i bet she knows. 🙂

RLG - Great post. Peonies are my all time favorite. And the pictures of the birds hatching are priceless. Thanks for sharing with the class. Cheers, girlie. xoxo

Kirsten J - You do know how lucky you are, right? We just set a record overnight low here in Seattle…and might see our first day about 70 later this week. My grandma was a gardener, too – I have plants from cuttings in her yard which I treasure. Those peonies are amazing!

Katy - do people ever steal your flowers? i would if we lived closer.
we have a bird nest on our ceiling fan on our back porch. rude cause we can’t turn it on now. but i can’t wait to see those babes!

Mary - I’m loving your pictures of the birds! Make sure to place something on your porch because the poop gets outta control! 🙂 We just place a cardboard box top and some newspaper and then it’s easier to clean up and change out. Because the birdies don’t want to poop in their nest so that means it just falls onto your porch! 😀

tara - sigh… love peonies.

Southern Gal - Oh, how I wish we could grow peonies around here. I have too much sun and too much heat for them. Thanks for sharing. And the babies are beautiful.

happygirl - I LOVE peonies. It’s so sad that they’re only around for such a short time. So beautiful. And, your pictures, gorgeous. Thanks for posting.

Cindy - I can smell the peonies right through the screen, I swear! Love ’em! And now 2 birds? Get out!!! These pictures are just so amazing!!! I adore your front porch, even if you think it needs cleaned. Looks like a great spot to read a book or have a morning chai. Be blessed.

Kerry - Aaah Meg! The colours are to die for! Did you put those flowers up because its my Birthday? 🙂 haha! Also, Welcome Baby #2 x

Jessica Johnson - i adore peonies. i almost adore those baby birds more. kind of like sad, pathetic and helpless meets the cutest thing i ever did see. so precious.

I’m not a bird lover, but those things are so ugly they’re cute! :o)

Jeannine - Lovely pictures as always. Your blog makes me so happy!
Your peonies are gorgeous! My Great Grandma used to have peonies alllllll over her garden, so seeing them always brings back good memories of spending time with her in the summer =)

Tam - Oh, thanks for sharing 🙂 I love photos of your home. My peonies are no where near ready to open…June is peony month for us. I also have baby birds, I’m jealous you can use your camera to take pics, our nest is on my truck tire(!), I have to use my cell to take photos!

Beth @ Dirty laundry - Your porch is gorgeous with or without cleaning it up. Love the birdie picture, especially yesterday’s…something hopeful about those two waiting eggs. I think you should submit that one somewhere.

Shauna - Hi, Im back to bug you about selling those as prints…now I think I love the 2 baby birds even more! That beautiful blue egg is so lovely…Gods handiwork is everywhere for us to enjoy. Amazing. So when will those pictures be in the shop?? 🙂 Im glad to hear your Grandma is able to enjoy your blog…she will love this post.

Mary Ferrara - I love these pictures so much! I feel so upliftd seeing such beautiful flowers this morning! Thank you so much for that. I love your garden, and hope to have one like yours one day! 🙂

sarah - The picture of those birdies is incredible. We had some mourning dove babies on our porch a couple of weeks ago. It was always so fun to go check on them. those babies flew the nest though… so now i am a 20 something single empty nester. ha!

Kimberlee Jost - Gorgeousness all around.
My peonies opened up and they are not the kind I thought I was buying.
I guess that means I get to buy more. 🙂

Jenni Carlisle - Can you A. adopt me or B. turn your house into a bed and breakfast so I can come stay with you? Every post of your home makes me wanna move to Kansas and move into the Museum next door.

Leigh - All of those pictures are incredible, but I really like the bird ones – WOW!!!

Terrie - Thanks for all the pictures of your peonies!! We lived on the my husband’s family farm for years and we inherited all of Grandma’s plants. Peonies were one of those treasured plants! When we moved to McPherson…I moved them with me and gave some to her daughters. When we moved to Hutch last year (in the coldest part of winter) I moved them again and transplanted as soon as I could. Sadly…they didn’t make it. Peonies are in my backyard plan somewhere…but it’s not the same as having Grandma’s Peonies. They always make me think of her! Loved every pic!! Back to quilting and then finishing some flower planting for me too!

Sarah Alcantara - Amazing bird pics! Gorgeous peonies….I’ll bet your grandma is going to love this!

Laura Phelps - don’t be surprised if you spot me crawling in your garden with a pair of scissors…
