more summer memories

we only made it to this waterfall once this summer!
that’s a total bummer.
we never know what we will find when we turn down the path towards the water.
this year the water level was low so there was not much to explore.
but being outside on a beautiful day is always good!
and we added this day to the many memories of coming here together.

we even got kobe to try swimming for the first time!
he hated it.

we tried to watch the sunset as much as possible from our firepit.
sometimes that included margaritas… sometimes chickens… sometimes both.
and sometimes we’d even have s’mores and an actual fire.

i used my stash of linens and cutter quilts to recover all the craft house porch cushions.
it felt great to use my sewing machine again!
it had been way too long since i had gotten that out.

i did SO MUCH GARDENING this summer!
i hope with all my heart that it all comes back next year – or at least 75% of it!!
it doesn’t look great this year but next year it might fill in and be fabulous.
fingers crossed.

annie learned to use the riding mower this summer!

sean turned 17 years old!
i think that is pretty rude of him to just keep growing up without my permission… just kidding.
he is a super fun kid.
i enjoy spending time with him so much!

we spent our 4th of july very differently than ever before!
we were in a tiny theater and we were in the 7th row.
it was THE BEST CONCERT!!!
it was surreal…. to be so close and for them to sound so incredibly good!
and craig sang every word to every song.
and i love that.

Laura Oyler - Can we talk about what’s going on with Sean’s cake? Because that looks delicious!

Tam - Love all the pictures ♥️♥️

Kerri - We attended our first concert at the Stiefel just last night (we’re in Ellsworth). What a great, intimate venue!

Katie - Wondering what kind of cake that is for Sean’s birthday – it looks like ice cream, but isn’t melty. Looks delicious! Please share!

Kacy - I love the Stiefel Theater. And the Avett Brothers. We just moved to Nebraska from Beloit, KS and we ALMOST bought tickets to that show, but didn’t quite know how moved/settled we’d be. We did see a Michael W Smith Christmas Concert there a few years ago that was incredible though. We sat up in the balcony and felt just as close.

summer in the backyard

summer is flying by way too fast.
i have been spending lots of time tending to my flowers because i looooove my flowers!
and kittys.
and dogs.
and chickens.

i am not ready for school to start (and early mornings and games and more games)
nope.
i just want to chill here at home and do summer for like…6 more months.
is that so much to ask?!

Tam - Gorgeous pics!

teyonce - sometimes I am taken back by just how good an eye you have, you set up the perfect shots and get the best results! I always love your posts (all of them of course) but when you post just streams of pictures I find myself going back, happy to look at them all again. i forget how talented my friend is!

Nina Newswanger - Your photos are beautiful!!

KATHY - Beautiful pictures….can’t blame you for wanting to chill 🙂

Kathi - Beautiful pictures! I love your kittens 🙂

Kerri - Wow – your flowers look gorgeous! The heat has been so hard on mine; has really taken a toll on everything (I am in Ellsworth County, Kansas). Sweet kitties, too.

Jill - Love, love, love your patio and yard pictures! Say, will you do a post about your chickens sometime with the details of your coop, your feeders, etc? I’ve always wondered how you have it set up inside the coop.

Tina - Your flowers are so pretty!! And I’m totally with you, I do NOT want summer to end. My 5 kids went back today. Sad face. But on a positive note, at least I won’t get a million calls at work today wanting me to referee a fight from home. LOL.

Angela - Co-sign on not ready for school to start! Your flowers are gorgeous!

so many projects!

life is moving along over here.
we have so many projects happening at once that i have shouted “we cannot do one more thing until we finish this list!” and then had to tell myself the same thing in my head 10 times a day.
i see all the weeds in the flower beds – “nope.  look away! they will be there next week/month!”
i see the junk drawers in the laundry room – “SHUT IT.  that mess will wait.  It is not on the list”
i walk by the fabric i bought for curtains back in december – “NOOOO! stick to the list!”
sheesh.
so i must push through… and not deviate from the crazy long list.
and i cannot wait to be done!

this rug!
i love it so much!
although… do not leave it out in a huge week long rain storm… it will fade a lot.
boo.

my mom found me this super great vintage floral rocking chair and it is IN the living room now.  🙂
it’s my new favorite thing.
behind it you can see the box where the baby chicks were living for a few weeks.

they are out in the coop now – too stinky to keep inside for long.
we got 3 barred rock and one buff orphington.
we’ll see if they are all girls… fingers crossed!
we aren’t allowed to have roosters according to the city rules.
and also roosters are loud!  no thank you.

over the last few months we have been to SO MANY volleyball tournaments.
sometimes siblings come, sometimes other family, sometimes it’s just me or just craig.
we were in Kansas City for a three day tournament last weekend.
i have never seen anything like that – 70 something courts??? CRAZY!

between games we got to do a little antique shopping in the West Bottoms in KC.
it was faaaaabulous.
this is me trying to get craig to appreciate this cabinet and want to buy it for me.
he didn’t bite.    #sadface

it was a really great place to find junky treasures.
i could’ve shopped five times as long as i got to… no one else was as excited as me about the antiques.
can you believe i didn’t buy that rainbow afgan?  or the jesus paint-by-number?? I have a collection of jesus pictures!? what is wrong with me?  it’s amazing!

i’m jealous that sean can do that eyebrow thing!

annie is such a great baker!
she made this cake just because she wanted to – and it was soooooo good!

waffle finally got a much needed haircut.
He loooooves not having all that hair – runs around all happy and funny after the haircut.
and i am happy to not have hairballs floating all around the house.

our first sunset of 2017 out in the firepit.
so happy to have so many more this summer!

i got some new rugs – i ordered from home depot because they have free shipping and you can return anything to the store.
this one was a total win!

one of the projects we are working on… (craig i mean) was putting in new flooring in the basement!
it was all carpet down here before.
and now it’s this awesomeness!
time to bring on the fun details like pillows, art work,  furniture etc!
we watch movies down there with the projector – like a movie theater – kinda.
way to go mr. duerksen!

i found this table & 6 chairs on craigslist for $200.
it looks exactly like our current craigslist table but it has two big leaves to seat lots more people.

i sanded, primed with KILZ2, painted with Behr Premium Plus Ultra Pure White and sealed it with Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish.
three of the chairs weren’t worth saving but three of them were.  🙂
but we already had six from the first CL table purchase.

and now we can have more than just our family at the table!
finally!

you can see the pics from the first CL table -click here…. there was also a hutch and two buffets in the deal!
and to see what we did with them – click here!
the house looks a lot different now but that shows the first steps.  🙂
craigslist is the BEST!

Kari D. - What did you use for the flooring in the basement? Love the color!

Emily - How do you keep your vintage fabric furniture from smelling……”vintage”?

Kristin S - OH, and pedestal is a life changer. You can fit so many more people around the table!

Your posts make me want to move to Kansas.

Tiffany - You guys did a great job on the flooring!

Caroline - Oh how fun it would be to go antiquing with you! Are you also using the R&F eyelash stuff??? Or do you just have great lashes naturally? 🙂

Lori - Love your photos! Waffle in a hoodie- ha!

happy new year!

2016 was a rough year it seemed.
i heard that over and over every where i went.
but it was so good too!
here’s my favorite pics from 2016 all together in one spot.   🙂

i always feel hopeful with the start of a new year…new calendar…a fresh start.
there’s a few big adventures i want to accomplish this coming year.
i am praying for discernment and wisdom as they play out.

thanks for reading this blog all these years.
it’s kind of a crazy thing!
thanks for the encouragement to keep writing or for what i shared.
you guys are awesome.

now – i have to clean out my bedroom from the christmas mayhem.

Angela Atkins - Lovely! What a great way to celebrate the year and your family.

meg duerksen - I love those plates!!! Thank you Cornelia!

cornelia krahn - I check everyday to see if you’ve written something new. I love your blog. I’m the one who gave you my vintage state plate collection so it was fun to see the Alabama plate. Happy New Year!

Kathi - Thanks for sharing for all these years! I love to see an email from FeedBlitz. You inspire me!

meg duerksen - oh Shar… we have plenty of problems – trust me! but we do have lots of fun too! thanks for reading!

meg duerksen - Jennibell – it’s called Praise Like Fireworks by Rend Collective. They are on repeat over here all the time so it had to be the band i choose. 🙂

meg duerksen - well… make me get all teary heidi! thanks for reading! i love dennis! 🙂

heidi - Your blog was the first one I ever read and it is still my absolute favorite. You are such an inspiration!!!! Thank you for everything you have done for my father-in-law’s business. What a blessing you are to the entire world!

Cheryl - What a wonderful Flipagram! You have the cutest family! Thanks for sharing. I need to take more pictures! 🙂

jennibell - Very fun!!! Looks like a great year for your crew!! What is the music/song you were playing?

Tracy Koeppen - Thank you, Meg, for writing this blog!! And taking beautiful pics!! I love to follow along.

It makes me sad whenever I hear another mention of 2016 being a “terrible year”. We had a great year!!

Lori - That was so fun! Love your photos, and I loved that there were tiny videos tucked in there 🙂 Happy new year!

jill - Love your blog and all of your t shirts you wear!

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - Happy New Years! Have a great, great year!

Shar - U make me so happy! I wish my family could b half as wonderful and fun loving and joyful as yours. It’s a new year a new start

Monica - Thanks for your blog, I love reading it and I’m always inspired by you and your family pictures are so nice. Thanks so much

Heather S. - Yep – I’m one of those “rough year” people. It truly held so much good for us, but it ended on such a hard note with the death of one of our very best friends, only 47 years of age. It has been a very hard month. I am looking forward to moving forward – into 2017 with healing!

this week

it was a late night!

ct-cubs-indians-world-series-game7-photoschc_1200x630

but totally worth it!
i do not claim to be a huge baseball fan.
BUT i have been to some Cubs games when we lived in chicago and Craig has always loved the Cubs!
i remember the first time he took me to a game we walked out of the tunnel area to our seats and we were practically on the field!
i couldn’t believe it!  we were SO CLOSE!
Then the other games he took me to were usually work parties on the rooftops.
such fun memories!
It was fun to watch game 7 last night with craig, annie, sean and talby – even through the rain delay and the 10th inning!
of course craig had watched all 7 games… i watched ONLY game 7.
ha!
and all day this week i’ve been humming “go cubs go! go cubs go”

(fabric from hobby lobby)
and now i’m ready to get started on Christmas Bunting in my shop.
i LOVE all these fabrics together!!!

annie turned twelve!
so crazy to think my tiny baby girl is now twelve.
time is just FLYING by!
someone on Instagram asked what 12 year old girls want for gifts.
she got some Nike & Under Armour clothes, silver Converse high tops, a basketball goal for her bedroom door, a KU blanket and colored pencils. Just listing that makes me smile because it’s SO very Annie.    🙂

penultimatefullsizerender
see??? HOW has this time warp happened?
this was yesterday.
i’m sure of it.

Kimberly Dial - That last one tugged at my heart strings. Such a precious pic. My oldest granddaughter will be twelve in December so I know what you mean. It’s as though time has sprouted wings.

Beth Larson - Oh Meg, this last pic is so sweet, and YOU look 14!

Melia - Life-long Cubs fan, here! My entire family is SO excited! And tired from all of those late nights in October 🙂

Also want to comment on how much you have NOT aged in 12 years. Wow! Time is on your side 🙂

Laura - I must have some of that bunting!

halloween memories

fall is so full of memories!
i got lost in the fall photos and blog posts over the last 9 years.  🙂
and then got into the photo albums too.
i couldn’t find ALL of our halloweens because half of our photo albums are still at the Craft House – oops.
we have had 21 Halloweens – that is a lot of costumes and pumpkins!
