SUMMER!

it’s safe to say we are enjoying the warm weather and spending LOTS of time outside.

IMG_1974IMG_7244IMG_7229IMG_2016IMG_7425IMG_7468IMG_7330
this was in my flower bed.
yeah…. I’m a little behind on gardening.

IMG_7331
and then i found this snake.
i called sean from out in the yard – he was in the basement.
i said “sean… i found a snake.  come get it.”

IMG_7336IMG_7850IMG_7925IMG_7789IMG_7802IMG_7926IMG_7883IMG_2107IMG_1950IMG_1995IMG_7397IMG_7793IMG_7932IMG_7920IMG_7449IMG_1947IMG_2034IMG_2115IMG_1938IMG_2082IMG_7264IMG_7856IMG_7864IMG_2041
i know.  i know… a lot of animals.
but hey #sorrynotsorry

🙂

susan - I would buy a canvas of the kittens and chicken in daisies!
Love them all. Fun!

Wendy - Love the animal pics, so pretty!

keri - pretty. so pretty!

Mj - I want the calico kitten! Can you bring it to California please?

Kristin - I should probably know this, but I don’t think I’ve ever read it here…did you study art in college, or are you just a natural? Your photos are so gorgeous. I love your composition, and wish I had your eye!

Andrea - Some of the photos with a single hen in the daisies should be offered in your shop!

Jen Brandt - Thank you for sharing your art of photography. Absolutely beautiful pictures.

Patti Mullican - Those daisies couldn’t be a more perfect backdrop for your chickadees! 😉

heidi e. - All of those animals made my day! The geese freaked me out a little bit. Geese here in Minne are mean! Can’t believe you were so close and didn’t get chased!

Maria - lol…it is a lot of cute animals…you could have named the post…chickens, the frog, the geese, and then the chickens…oh, and the kittens…lol…loved them all…especially those tiny kittens!

Linda - your life is so beautiful!

Jenny B. - love love love! are you using a macro lens for the kittens? those frogs (toads?) are funny. they remind me of my baby — all floppy armed and double chinned. ha! 🙂

Nancy Wms. - The photos of the chickens should be for sale on your site. They are really fun shots! I mean how could you go wrong with daisies and chickens?!

Sheila Pearson - I adore each and every one of these photos, Meg. You have a great eye!

Kimberlee Jost - You need to make a canvas of a chicken in the daisies.
Also, those daisies…are they different than Shasta’s?
Text me.
🙂

Katherine - What a gorgeous post! Such amazing photos. It’s like distilled 100% pure summer.

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - Meg! These pictures.. so, so, good.

Kathi - LOVE! I want kittens, chickens and even toads now! Do you take these pics with your iPhone or with a digital SLR? They are beautiful.

Brady - Would you stop it with those kittens?!? I’m not a cat person, but your pictures are making me want one! So cute!

jill - Meg you are an amazing photographer!!

sharon / theprincipledtype.blogspot.com - ha-ha! that weed could have it’s own movie!! (and i mean weed in the regular old-fashioned weed way ~ lol.)

Heather - Fantastic pix! The snake ones cracked me up.

Laura - dear moderator, see my comment above? please remove my last name- thanks

Laura Cornia - If you were to sell the 4th picture in your shop ( brown chicken in the daisies, trees in backround), I would hang it in my kitchen!

Crissy - daisies, chickens, kids, dogs and kittens… does life get any better!?!?!?

Penny - Aww, some of my best memories growing up were when our mama cat had kittens. I had so much fun with them! Your kids are so lucky to have all of those animals in their life. Teaches responsibility and compassion! Love your chicken. I am too lazy to take care of chickens! 🙂

marcie - I am a child of the South and I love it but oh my goodness your neck of the woods is gorgeous!!

RAINBOW STAIRS!

The Craft House has a back staircase off the kitchen leading up to bedrooms and a bathroom.
and for the last ten years it has looked like this…
IMG_2939
IMG_2944IMG_2942
for the past three years i have wanted to paint them but i just couldn’t get it done.
this spring i finally had a long enough break in rentals and craft weekends and i got busy.
i cleaned everything really well.

then i primed all the wood surfaces with Kilz2.
two coats.
IMG_2950IMG_2964IMG_2972IMG_3823
and then i painted the walls and the ceiling all same color – Ultra Pure White by Behr in Eggshell finish.
IMG_3836

after the walls and ceiling  THEN i painted the doors, baseboard, window trim and the treads in Behr Ultra Pure White Semi Gloss paint.
painting wood white takes like a million years and then three more coats after that.
but it is so happy and bright that it is worth it to me.
wood color honestly makes me feel sad to be around… not at your house but yes at my house.
it sucks all the light out of the room.
i wouldn’t be sad visiting your house all decked out in wood everywhere but if i had to LIVE in say… a log cabin?
i would either go into a deep depression or paint the log cabin white on the inside.
(and maybe the outside too)
i know me.

it felt like it took FOREVER to get to the fun part!
i was dying to start on the color.

i taped the edges around the stair riser to help me have straighter lines.
and then i could FINALLY start.
IMG_3144
i got the smallest size of paint i could… i think it’s a pint?
i used Valspar paint for the colors.
Bright Red
Hint of Cherry
Orange Ochre
Dandelion Wish
Chopped Chives
Lavish Green
Wishing Well

i am not brand loyal for paint.
it is purely based on which store i am closest to at the time i need the paint.

and i used a foam brush for the colors.
it just seemed like it would be easier to control for such a small area.

IMG_4018
(i am aware that i still need to caulk the baseboards… one step at a time)IMG_4082
——————————————- BEFORE ——————————————————- AFTER ——————————————–
stairs
i mean???
is there anything happier?!
no.
there is not.
IMG_7393
IMG_1374
IMG_5173
i touched up my mistakes with a little paint brush – OY VEH!
i had lots of time to think and pray and sing and plan while i was working on all of this.

IMG_5193
IMG_5169
and this is the polyurethane that i use on white painted wood projects.
i like it.
i used it a lot.
i used many coats since stairs get a lot of traffic.

IMG_1513IMG_1516
i may hang things on the wall.
i may not.

IMG_4750
it took a ton of time but it was worth every second.
i wish i would’ve done it when we lived here.
i wish i had it my house i live in now just so i could see it everyday.  🙂

rainbows forever!!!

Diane McVey - This is one of the most beautiful, awesome things I have ever seen! I absolutely adore it! You are right it is just plain HAPPY!!! It’s GREAT! You should be very proud of yourself for doing this!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - Yes! Yes! Yes!

Leslie - Those are some happy stairs – love them!!

Ruth Elder - You are one for being creative so….. go online, maybe Pinterest and look up wall art done with paint chips. You find a picture and make it out of ‘pixels’ of paint chips. I think that would be perfect in that hallway.

Kimberlee Jost - It’s stunning! LOVE it. It makes that area so bright and cheery!

Kristy Mendler - I love this! Looks awesome!

Bethany - Obviously this is the happiest staircase ever. And the fact that it’s a back staircase…just another reason to love the craft house. I’ve dreamt of one day having a house with a back staircase since I was a girl.

The Love List | Gloria York's Blog - […] Meg’s stairs make me happy […]

Andrea - I love this….. don’t you have stairs going to a basement???? boy would that be fun!!!!!!

Carol S. - Sensational. And yes, a ton of work!!

Gevay - I am so with you on the painted wood. It looks so clean and happy and bright. There is a designer on that design channel we all love who goes on and on about how awful it is to paint wood and how people are terrible humans for doing it. She’s been shaming me and now you have set me free to enjoy my painted wood again! Thank you MEG!!! 😉

Beth - Yep, SO COOL! I love it. Job well done!

Judy - Those stairs just make me happy to look at them! Fantastic idea!! I bet you feel happy every time you walk upstairs!! :0)

Talia - LOVE this! Please do this at my house! 🙂

jennyonthespot - Oh Meg. So much the very, VERY BEST!!!

Lisa - I freaking LOVE it! I am with you on the wood being depressing, I would have to paint it all white too…I know lots of people would not approve of that, but oh well!

jennibell - Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. Really, there are just NO other words. These are the BEST!!!

Kimberly - That staircase looks so light, bright, and happy now! I love it! Kudos to you for the patience it took to paint all of that!

bekkah - wow! this is impressive; your dedication/patience is inspiring 🙂

i totally know what you mean about being comfortable in your space vs someone else’s. i LOVE all the colors in your home/craft home but at the end of the day i am a neutrals/minimalist girl.

Kathleen W. - That is so awesome, bright & cheery ! Makes me want to paint my stairs ! You rock Meg !

iralee poore - yup- i love it! i know it was hard and a long process but it looks lovely!!

Megan - Meg-
you are sooooo awesome! thanks for posting the whole shebang…..I can hardly wait to do my back staircase! I have to wait until school lets out (I teach) but as soon as the end of June rolls around….I am breaking out the rainbow paints!

Thanks so much for inspiring me and helping me to be creative!

Jen@thecottagenest - It looks amazing! I could move right into the craft house!

robin - Best.inspirational staircase ever!!…

Kristin S - That is a true labor of love and I so love the end result!

I painted my two garage steps lime green a few years ago and it still makes me happy when I pull in my garage. Rainbow would be dreamy.

Corinne - Hi
Wondered what poly you used there’s no pic. All the ones I’ve tried on white turn yellow and I end up sanding and repainting. Looking at my coffee table now and I have to repaint again to get back to white. Love the stairs. Thanks

Janelle - If I had a million dollars, I would offer it to your for your house. It is so well done, with so much love & thoughtfulness!

Kristen - Meg, I love the way that you feed my need for COLOR!!!! There are 7.2 zillion projects that I should be doing at our house, but I just wanna paint my stairs now!!!!! You did an amazing job!!!

Kristin F. - They look amazing!! And I am completely with you on the painted wood bandwagon. We are in the process of buying my parents’ 1987 log home and the VERY first thing on our agenda? Paint every surface white. I cannot wait to live surrounded by painted wood logs.

Julie - Such a light bright cheery stairway to walk up and down in now. How old is the house Meg?

Kelly - I have never seen a prettier set of stairs! I bet it just makes you smile every time that you see them.

Oh.. and I completely agree about wood tones!

Su - I don’t like purple either. Noticed it got left off the stairs 🙂

And I could not live in a log cabin or a house with wood cabinets, wood trim, wood paneling either. . .when we moved into this house I painted everything white. . it was definitely 70s, Brady Bunch style wood. . .now it is happy.

Thanks for sharing the colors. . pinning it. ..I want to do my dining room chairs each a color.

Pam - Good heavens, we just did some painting so I can imagine how much time it took. And glory how hard to have done all that work and not see it every day. Beautiful, absolutely beautiful!

Cathy - I love it! A trick I’ve learned in all the painting I’ve done: paint, let it dry, tape, paint over the tape with the same color. After it dries, paint the bordering color. The first color is what will bleed under your tape a little bit and that’s ok because that’s the color you put down first. The bordering color won’t bleed through. Remove the tape and you’ll have a perfect clean line.

Ame - That is brilliant – what a fun, incredibly happy idea!

kim - lady, you are DEDICATED. this looks like SO much work (and love) went into them. the payoff is GRAND, they look amazing!! can’t wait to see these in person!

Kit - Meg! Way to go, it’s completely awesome!

sharon / theprincipledtype.blogspot.com - you are so brave and i am so chicken! lol. your ‘more color’ life beckons.

KWolff - Way to go! This would definitely make trekking up stairs a lot more fun! 🙂

this week

i will say it again… i don’t like when shows end.
i don’t mind if it’s like “Full House” or something but when it’s MY show that i go to every week for down time… UGH!
and i keep getting told “all good things come to an end”
umm… NO.  No they don’t.  they don’t HAVE to.
blah.
mad-men-cast-interview-grieving-the-end-ftr
so it’s over.
and I’m sad about it.
i loved every single episode.
in the beginning, i tried really hard to not like this show but i just could not!
it’s too well done!
you can’t NOT like Madmen if you start from episode one and watch… it’s impossible.

and i could never pick a favorite character because i love how they all work together.
i will miss this show.

and then ON THE SAME WEEK David Letterman retires.
i mean really.
he has been in my life forever.
since before i knew what late night tv was!
and he has ALWAYS reminded me of my dad… the way they speak… deliver a joke.
there wasn’t a single show where i didn’t think “sounds like my dad” and i almost always said it to craig.
1035x801-letterman-1800-1396621705
we didn’t watch much anymore… but i liked knowing it was there.
and then this week with all its farewells i loved Tina Fey’s honest and hilarious and brave goodbye.
i loved seeing REALITY of what it takes to wear those dresses…. she’s a riot.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tKhr5Ujbd4

and let’s see….what else could end this week?
oh yeah, SCHOOL!

my Annie ended her elementary school career!!!
she is now a middle schooler!
WHAT?!
like as in… i don’t have ANY children who go to the elementary school anymore?!
bittersweet in every way.
the whole school & the parents line the halls of the school and clap for the fourth graders as they leave on their last day.  it’s a fun way to celebrate them.  Annie thought it was embarrassing.  ha ha haannie

IMG_1901IMG_1904IMG_1905IMG_1909IMG_1912IMG_1919IMG_1926

and Sean is now ending his middle school years and is moving onto high school in the fall!
our school does a promotion ceremony for eighth graders that is casual and fun.
since it’s my third i managed to make it through without crying…. knowing it’s just another step in the journey.

IMG_7118IMG_7106
i didn’t cry because i know he is going to do great!
he was SO HAPPY to be there with his friends and having such a fun day.
he’s really looking forward to football in the fall.
i will have a senior and a freshman in the high school and an 8th grader and a 5th grader in the middle school.
kinda funny.

AND one of my BFFs moved away this week too!!!!
my exercise buddy.
my thought processor.
my organized genius.
my calming presence.
dianna
it’s only two hours away but it will never be the same.
boo-hoo.
i am going to miss her so much.
she is truly the kindest person i have ever met.
EVER.
sighhhhhhh.

so… yeah.
don draper, david letterman and my children’s youth AND my bestie left me – ALL in one week?!!

IMG_7147
i earned my margarita last night.
all three of them.

tracy fisher - i’m just getting back to reading blogs… took some time off. oh boy do I miss reading yours. have the best summer ever!!

Flower Patch Farmgirl - Grumpy frog suddenly makes sense.

Wendy - We are going to watch the entire series of MadMen for the third time. I LOVE this show so much and really can’t get over that it is over. I thought the end was pretty good but I was just so sad that it was over. I really liked what they did with Peggy. That was my favorite.

I love the stairs so much and I am so glad you shared. I have an odd stairwell that I seriously am considering doing this to. Right now it is pine treads with unfinished fronts because I haven’t touched it since we removed the ugly carpet. i have painted the walls but that is all. You always inspire me! I love your blog and really how you share. You are still my first blog to check on. Long time reader! You have such courage, faith, and honesty. Thanks!

-Wendy

Debi Meyers - i love ya Meg. I hope we meet someday. Best photo of Dave. I love his little caramel-colored glasses.

At a crossroads, I chose The Walking Dead over MadMen. Can’t say I’m sorry. But you make it look worth my time.

deb meyers

Carrie - I have also never heard of middle school starting in 5th grade. In our area most middle schools start in 6th grade. A few districts start it in 7th grade and some have 6th grade centers.

Eugenia from Southern California - Woweeee. Middle school doesn’t start until 7th grade here. I have two boys in their twenties and another two traveling the journey.
A boy starting middle school and a girl starting 3rd grade in the fall. School doesn’t get out until the middle of June and starts again at the end of August. My kids are counting the days until they get to swim nearly every day.

I love the time without homework and longer fun days.

You are a brave brave woman. xxooo

Jen - I feel the same way about Mad Men. I loved every minute of it, and I thought the finale was absolutely brilliant. And I have a senior who graduates on 6/1 and heads off to college (four hours away) in August. I think I’ll go have a bottle of Moscato! 🙂

Debbie H - I meant 5 to 8. I’m in shock and can’t type, apparently.

Debbie H - HOW is that possible!??? Annie JUST began kindergarten! Have I been honestly reading your blog THAT LONG? You MOURNED the day she left for school (kinder) hahaha. And Kansas does middle school from 4 to 8? California is really out of it, I guess. I learn a lot here. . . I might need a marg. wow.

Lisa - That IS a lot to happen in one week! The friend moving? The hardest I would think. Good friends are the biggest blessings in life. And I have never heard of 5th grade being in middle school? Is that the norm in Kansas?

Lpro - What a week! I think you should have 3 more this weekend 🙂

we went to a NeedtoBreathe concert a few weeks ago…. so good.  It was outside and i was nearly frozen by the end but totally worth it!
i love escaping with mr. duerksen even if it’s just for one night!

this is probably the best picture of us ever…
rainbow + kissing + basketball goal + chicken coop + stripey skirt + wind blowing +gray skies +sunshine + rain = AWESOME!19
this turtle was so interesting to all of our pets and kids for about… 20 minutes.
and then we let it go.  🙂
1817
always here.
i heard that walmarts are starting to have online grocery shopping where you just pull up to the drive through and say “hey it’s Meg Duerksen and I’m here to get my groceries” AND THEY BRING IT OUT TO YOUR CAR!!!
whaaaaat????
of course i immediately checked and no we do not have this in our area.
but check YOUR area!!!
maybe you can eliminate going to the store for 1.5 hours and overspending every week (like i hear some people do…. ha ha ha)

16
i am trying to get myself exercising more… #thestruggleisREAL
it never gets easier not to quit working out.
but i feel SO much better all day long when i do.
why do i do what i don’t want to do???
i don’t want to quit.  i don’t want to get weak.  but i eat cake and get tired!

ughhhhh.

IMG_1433
i wish my blog had emojis.
you know this would be heart eyes… or rainbow-tized hearts at the very least.

15
the daisies all around the chicken coop are kind of dreamy.
and we didn’t plant them there… we just dropped the chicken coop onto this spot and daisies came up all around it.
more heart eyes inserted here.
(because there is no daisy emoji anyway)
(AND when are we going to get emojis that are more practical???)

ice cream after dr. appts because shots are a bummer.
14
my cousin (in the white gown standing with her mother) got married last weekend!  she was beautiful and their wedding was too.
i think seeing how people celebrate love and friendship in all the different ways is so lovely.
and if it involves goat cheese covered grapes… i am even happier.
i heard my sister say “she looks so good she should wear a flower in her hair everyday!”
i agree.
13
this is my side of the family in two pics – minus my oldest daughter.
we were so close to having a family photo!  ha ha ha
12
softball season is fast approaching.
11
late May and early June are my MOST favorite times in kansas.
every day looks like a painting!  it’s GREEN!  it’s LUSH! the skies are emotional!  it’s sunny!  it’s raining!

this is my kids’ last week of school.
and everything gets quite crazy when there are five people home all day instead of one.
i am REALLY excited about sleeping in everyday… which goes back to my struggle of working out.
sleeping almost always wins.
can this be changed at 39 years old??

but all in all… i am ready for the break.
ready for sunshine.
ready for the change of routine.
for the extra time together.
and again… for the sleep.

alice - You have such a lovely family. Wonderful pictures! It shows that you enjoy life.

jill - Talby: taste the rainbow! 🙂

Rae - I LOVE your blog. I’ve followed along for several years and I was wondering at what ages your children started playing sports. I want to encourage an active lifestyle without over-scheduling our kids. We have an almost 7 yo and a 4 yo. The 7yo has played several sports but hasn’t found his “thing.” Do we keep trying or wait? What advice do you have for active kids?

BeckyB - I always love your photos, Meg. Thanks for the peek into life at your place.

Valerie - Meg, You are seriously inspiring in every single way! That rug your are sitting on is dreamy! Thanks for being a light!!

Kathi - LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this post! kittens, goofy dogs, chickens, turtles, rainbows, flowers, ice cream, babies, fun kids! What’s not to love about this post. I need to remember to take more pics of random everyday life, yours looks dreamy:)

Wendy - I would love a post (or email) about Talby’s room. My daughter will be 13 this summer and I want to re-do her room as our summer project – Love the wall-to-wall chalkboard walls but have so many questions 🙂

Linda - these are my favorite posts. Just randomness in life. your love for your family comes shining thru!

Amy Jo - Love those peonies!!
Such a fun post!

sharon / theprincipledtype.blogspot.com - i’m having totally rainbow love (like, more even than ‘double rainbow guy’ if you remember him?!!)
pretty happy about the peonies too.

Shanna Mead - Oh my! I can not tell you how happy these photos make me feel.
Love them!

Sarah Joy - Hi, love all your pictures. Where did you get the HOPE tee? The picture of you and hubby is beautiful, you need to print it out asap.

Jenny B. - Love all these pictures! Especially the rainbow ones and the kittens!

Are you so thankful to have a basement now? I don’t think you had one at the craft house, right? I wish we had one. Every spring, I talk about having one of those companies come out and dig a shelter in our garage floor. But, then my dad tells me how that’s not safe at all to have your cars and hot water heater and chemicals etc. right above you. I’m just thinking having a hole to get in is better than cowering in the hallway, you know? We don’t even have a room that is completely interior. Anyway… I have a love/hate relationship with Spring, for sure. 🙂

We just did doctor appointments last week too. My boys were dreading it for weeks because we thought they needed new shots, but when they got there, the doctor said they were actually all up to date. Happy surprise! 🙂

Melissa - The shirt-full of kittens!!!! Ahhh I need them!

And how beautiful is that picture of you two in front of the rainbow? Seriously… you couldn’t have planned that picture better if you tried.

Gillian Currie - Hi meg, I’m amazed you guys don’t have click and collect at your shops. I live in Northern Ireland and I never thought we had something you guys over the pond didn’t have! We are able to order our shopping, drive up and collect. We also have a delivery service too…its GREAT!! Saves loads of time and money!! Love your blog x

Meredith - Such a lovely post. Minus the tornado warning of course. I’d take an earthquake over one of those anyday! The peonies are amazing and was that a tamarind margarita?! My fave!

scott went to prom last weekend!

it was cute to see him get dressed up and be nervous and then know that he a great time.
prom is such a fun night for all of them… they feel so grown up.

IMG_1048IMG_0983
this is not scott’s car… but it was fun to sit in and take pictures.
there was a huge thunderstorm during what was supposed to be the outdoor “Promenade”
so the car part was kind of a bust… because it was POURING.
BUMMER.

i have had some questions about our Invisible Fencing system we put in here at this house.

IMG_1092

we bought the Innotek Basic In-Ground Pet Fencing System, SD-2000

51B1jgFypsL

and since we have more than one dog we ordered the Extra Collar For Smart Dog

41GMRfilJ7L

our yard is bigger than the amount of wire that comes in the kit so we ordered additional wire to go around the whole yard.
PetSafe 500-foot Spool of 20-Gauge Boundary Wire

8100tFsMOSL._SX425_

IMG_1106

my sons and craig put it in in a weekend and it was not difficult.
the dvd that comes with it shows easy instructions to do it yourself.
you put flags up all around the perimeter of the yard to alert the dogs to the boundary.
then you train them for a few weeks in several ways that are all taught on the dvd.
our dogs caught on really quickly.
the collar beeps when they get close to the border so they know to stop.
it also beeps when the battery is dying so you know to change it.
eventually they don’t even go near the edge to make it beep.

the only times our dogs have gotten out of the yard is when the battery has died in their collar.
IMG_1120
even dogs blink when they get their photos taken.
HA!

IMG_1121IMG_1123
i HIGHLY recommend this fence.
invisible fencing has changed my days!
walking a big dog was never pleasant for me… and with two or three dogs… forget about it!
and bathing them when they ran away to find every pond and puddle they could was not my favorite.
and worry about if they were going to come back.

this fence made my life easier and kept my dogs safer.
and i like that!

it doesn’t keep other dogs from coming into your yard but it keeps your own dogs from running away.
our dogs are friendly so if a dog happens to come in our yard it’s like they just met their new best friend!

now if only it would work on chickens…

i made craig a birthday cake.
it was yummy and i wish i’d only made a half of a cake…. because it’s just sitting there… looking at me!
it’s calling to me from the kitchen!!!
i can see it right now!

i used this recipe from Javacaupcake for the cake.… yum.

(i could not find espresso powder so i left it out)

for the frosting i used:

1/2 cup room temperature butter
1 cup peanut butter
4 cups powdered sugar
3- 6 T milk

Cream together the butter and peanut butter.  Then add in powdered sugar slowly and add milk a little at a time until frosting is the consistency that you prefer.

i added chopped Reese’s Mini Peanut Butter Cups to the top.
i like the minis because they come already unwrapped!
the trick… throw the bag of reese’s in the freezer and then when you are ready to chop them up it doesn’t get all messy and mushy.  🙂  🙂  🙂  trust me… i do my research on reeses!  i’m no dummy.

and saving the best for last…

These are some of the foster moms who care for the children of His Safe Haven.
do you remember a few months ago Talby raised money to give to HSH for their housing?
and SO MANY of you gave generously!!
she was able to raise enough for an entire year of housing for His Safe Haven!
THEN Christina sent this picture to Talby and said that with that money they were able to move all the moms to one location to live together!!   How cool is that?  Now they are a community of foster moms that can support each other!  Can you imagine the joy it must bring to have women right next door to help you out… who understand the special needs of these kids?  WOW!
God is doing great things with His Safe Haven!
thank you again for helping my Talby raise money for them!
i hope Talby gets to meet all these women someday.   🙂

Leslie - I can’t stop laughing at your chicken picture – they crack me up! I think that should go in your shop 🙂

amy jupin - a couple of notes:
1. scott’s prom date is super cute! they make such a handsome couple!
2. i think your puppers are the cutest. but the chickens scare me!
3. that cake looks divine. i’m drooling. happy bday craig!
and 4. the last pic is just awesome! awesome!

Shannon R - That cake looks so delish. My hubby is allergic to peanuts so I can’t enjoy treats like that frequently. He is out of town for the next four days. I wish you could box it up and mail it to Alabama. My kids and I would gladly eat it.

Andrea - Meg…how in the world did your son grow up so quickly. What a handsome young man….he sure does resemble your husband! I just love to see pictures of your dogs….they are all so cute, but that waffle is adorable! and wowza….your chicken looks a little testy!

Terrie G - 1. Oh, to be young again!! Part of me wants to go back…part of me would dread it! 🙂

2. Those dogs! And Chickens! I Die! Oh. My. Cuteness!

3. That cake…my Dad would love it! Maybe even my son-in-law…and he doesn’t like cake! What?! I know! Who doesn’t like cake? But he Loves cheesecake…ok, he’s back in good graces! 🙂

4. And your daughter! (well, they are all awesome in their own right!!) But So proud of Talby!! I too pray that she gets to meet those ladies someday! How amazing would that be?!

5. Look at that! A bonus comment!! Your stairs! You are killing me with all your color! Will you Please come do my house? I’ll cook for you…and I’d even help! And that chalkboard wall! Fab-U-Lous! Your IG = happy part of my day!

Hugs!

Allison - Oh that cake! I’ll have to keep that in mind for my hubby’s birthday. Yum!!

Rebekah - I am secretly glad that one of my children is allergic to peanuts, such that the presence of that cake in my house would be an actual threat to life. Because if it weren’t… oh, Lordy. Also, my husband, who adores Reece’s cups is on a low-carb diet. All the world conspires against me!

Lyndi - @Kristin S. – I’m one of the #500 too!! I love finding people who love all the same things as me – Meg’s blog, Jen’s book #FortheLove Fixer Upper…so fun!

Tanya H - So, I live very near a “highway” that is also the main road and very busy and packed and 55mph speed limit. I drive it to get my son to and from school and I pass a bunch of chickens that are free to roam who NEVER go into the highway. I finally asked my husband how on earth those people ‘taught’ their chickens to not cross the road and he thought it was the invisible fences people use for dogs. We’re both allergic to everything and not pet people so we don’t know a lot about it but….maybe there IS a way?? LOL!

sharon / theprincipledtype.blogspot.com - Cried happy tears when I saw the pb Reese chocolate cake . . Then REALLY cried happy tears when I saw the feedback on Safe Haven.
Thanks for the weekend kickstart!

Suz - Love the pics and am so going to try that cake for my husband’s birthday. He loves, loves Reese’s Cups and oh how divine it looks! As for the foster moms at His Safe Haven, I would love to meet them all but…..especially that one in the middle. She looks like she has some spunk to her – that face is pure joy (and mischief!!).

Tere - 1. Eeek. I see Scott and think of you and Mr. D in your dance picture from high school ….wasn’t it just yesterday?
2. How did I miss you got a 3rd dog?
3. That’s the problem with baking sometimes, I can down a cake 10x faster than my kids. I’ve got years of experience on them.
4. Talby rocks.

xoxo Tere.

Stephanie - I am so in love with the news about His Safe Haven!! Tears spring to my eyes for those women and also for Talby! Great news!!

Ellen B. - Your blog and instagram pictures are a breath of fresh air during my busy, chaotic days! Thanks so much for reminding us of how everyday life, while sometimes hard, is truly a gift to be enjoyed and celebrated.

Elizabeth gleason - Woo hoo we’ve been on the “fence” on what we should get for our yellow lab. The yard has thawed and we’ve been trying to pick what to get. Going to check it out

Ann - I enjoy your blog so much! You are a great mom & wife – we can see how much you love and support your family. Love your thoughts and posts. Love your creative ideas. I want you to come decorate my house! Hurray for Talby and His Safe Haven! What an amazing act of service she has done. I too hope that she has a chance to meet those women. How awesome would that be?

Jenny B. - YAY for His Safe Haven! Way to go, Talby! Also, I am picturing all the chickens wearing the invisible fence collars. Haha! 🙂

Lisa - Dear Meg, I will come and eat the cake with/for you and I would also like to hug and squeeze the pups, especially Waffle as he seems like such a sweet boy. Your faithful blog reader, Lisa 🙂 PS – Way to go, Talby!!!

Kim - You must be famous..someone at my office showed up with this cake today…I’m guessing they saw it on your blog or instagram. I should go find out who it was so we can be real life friends bound by reading a common blog! 🙂 Also, I want a goldendoodle sooo badly! I call every one I see anywhere “Waffle”. Even my husband knows what I’m talking about. k, hope this comment made you smile.

Debby - Great prom pics! So elegant! 35 yrs. ago for mine! Ack!! Of course, I was pretty trendy in my light blue HOOP GOWN lol.

I also love the pics of your sweet pups and those gorgeously attired foster moms! Those bright colors! So cheerful & so happy.

Did not love the picture of that sinful cake!! Made my mouth water & now I want a Reeses!!

Debby, also in KS

Routhie - That is so great for Talby and those women!

tiffany day - hi meg! I have been telling myself for months that i need/should email you and “introduce” myself! I feel a tad stalkerish! i have been reading your blog for – awhile now – i like it – i like you! i want to come to craft weekend as a helper! i follow you on instragram – i think you are funny, smart, easy going, down to earth, a girl after my own heart and someone I wish i could have coffee with! i live on the west coast! I try and blog but find it hard to find a groove. Instragram is good but it definately does not replace blogging – sometimes you need to write and share more, so I am trying!

I am here finally commenting after your instragram of the yummy piece of cake! Hope you have a great rest of the day!

xoTiffany

kelly - totally teary about His Safe Haven…what a gift to those women to have each other for community! thank you for sharing with us here.

Kristin - I thought I’d better comment, since you asked us to on Instagram! I LOVE the chicken photo! Scott & his date look fabulous! The dogs are adorable. I would be eating the cake all day long! And whoo hoo to Talby!

Heidi Durant - Love!the cake looks amazing, your son and his date were so beautiful, and your puppies? Oh so cute. I love the rainbow stairs!I showed my husband and we both agreed our next house will have stairs! Happy Thursday.

chrissi - you had me at that cake with 4 birthdays quickly approaching, but then then the photo of his safe house…..the very best thing i will see today. thanks for sharing it♥

Makila - I’m still reading every post! Keep blogging!!!!!!

Kelly S - We use the same exact fencing for our 3-acre property, and have NEVER had a problem. It works so well on our lab, Dakota, that even when the battery is dead in his collar, he is afraid of going out of the yard 🙂 He has only gotten shocked once at the start of us showing him the ropes with the fencing, and he went too close and got shocked (as hard as it was, it was needed, because he will never forget, and it works on saving his life, to keep him in his yard). It’s so awesome. Like your family, we bought extra since our yard is big (3 acres) and my husband and son put it in and it was super easy. And it was EASY to train our dog, from the DVD that came with it. I also highly suggest it. It works so well on our dog, that he won’t even chase a ball (his favorite thing on planet earth) if it goes out of his boundary. He stops cold in his tracks and barks since he can’t reach his ball. 🙂

Christi {Jealous Hands} - I so second Kelly – rainbows always make me think of Meg! That cake – fantastic! And I’m totally gonna cheat & make one tonight – but using a devil’s food cake mix. I know I’m probably missing some of the fantastic, but hey, we have baseball practice & the icing sounds so amazing I think it’ll make up for it. Loved hearing the update on HSH – that is awesome!

It does not appear that comment on blogs is a thing anymore – but I sure wish it was! xo

Robin - Complying with your IG request for comments. Cake looks very delicious – my family would have devoured it in three seconds flat! Going to look into invisible fencing – this winter with our four feet of snow made going to put the dog out on his lead AWFUL! Keep up the good work 🙂

Kelly - okay, you asked for it… 🙂

1) thank you and thank you for sharing the Hatmaker Podcast
2) I do not thank you for sharing the cake… jk (I’m printing that for my sons bday cake in October)
3) On a serious note, I never got the chance to tell you and Kimberly at HS, but I wanted you to know that finding your blog a few years back was awesome and I so enjoy it, but once IG became a deal– the snippets that you two shared of Jesus calling and the Message bible changed so many things for me and opened my eyes to Jesus and reading and trying to figure things out. I have always felt like an outsider when it comes to church and the bible and all that, but meeting you guys and being able to connect thru IG has been such an awesome thing in my life..

4) Every time I see a rainbow, I think…. Meg!!

Have a great day girl…

Brittany - Visiting from Instagram and leaving a comment like the old days 😉 So glad to hear about your invisible fence!! We have a golden doodle who likes to go tromping through everything that he shouldn’t!! I am thinking maybe this fence will do the trick. I wouldn’t mind sharing a slice of cake :). Thanks for always sharing your happiness. I recently found you on Instagram and you sure have a happy feed.

Diane - I’m going to have to try that recipe for my husbands birthday in June!

hope spoken weekend

well i am home from a really good weekend at Hope Spoken in Dallas.
i have been trying to write this post for three days but life is busy!
appointments and carpool and dinner and groceries and puppies and chickens and everything!
take me back to Dallas!!!

kimberlee and i drove down together and talked our heads off every. single. minute.
#duh

IMG_3565

when we got to dallas we ate at Lyfe Kitchen for lunch.
hummus on a salad? quinoa and cucumbers? avocado AND hot sauce?!
and i tried my first radish!
this salad was not only photo worthy but memorable.
i wish i could eat it every week!
over this meal kimberlee said “i always forget how good it feels to get away and do something out of the norm”
amen.
YAY for leaving the routine behind and having fun outside our everyday lives!

IMG_3570

IMG_3571
the first place i went for the conference was the Speaker Dinner.
the other Hope Spoken speakers were there and i met them for the first time.
We met at Neighbor’s Table with Sarah hosting us in her back yard.
(go read about her Love Mission!)IMG_3572

FullSizeRender-21IMG_3573IMG_3576

the table setting was beautiful and made us each feel so special.
i loved hearing Sarah’s heart in what she does… how she serves.
she made me want to be more intentional about sharing and gathering!
it was a relaxing way to start the weekend.
IMG_3577

not hope spoken related but still weekend related:
we ate lunch on friday at the Rusty Taco.
OMJosh.
the #2 Roasted Pork Taco with cotija cheese and pickled red onions was something i can’t stop craving!
we tried to go back twice but it was closed on the weekends!
IMG_3585

IMG_3626
Hope Spoken opened on friday night with Jen Hatmaker.
now… i knew she would be good.
but she blew me away.
i have read her books but i’ve never heard her speak… it was the best thing i have heard in possibly years!
she’s the real deal.
this is a terrible picture of her… but i wanted you to see the stage and the set up… SO lovely.
i don’t think it was recorded but if it was you have got to hear it!  i will keep you posted.

IMG_3589IMG_3607
these were my roommates.
i mean, they were ok i guess…
ha ha ha.
ashley, shannan and kimberlee are so nice to room with me.
they make me so happy.
i wish we all lived in the same state… in the same town…. on same block… with adjoining backyards where we can hang out every night!  🙂

this is my small group i got to be in.
i always feel anxious when joining a group of women… (will this feeling last forever?)
and as usual… the group was totally lovely full of sweet women with stories that matter & big hearts.
Crystal was our leader and i have been wanting to meet her in person for a long time.
our group even had a smiley baby mascot.

IMG_3614

i spoke on saturday morning.
i was a sweaty mess but i made it through!
and i did cry… but not out of control.
they did not record the break outs so literally “i guess you had to be there”
FullSizeRender-21

(thanks for picture kimberlee)
i felt like i needed a nap when i was done!
but i am so glad i did it!!!
at 10:55 i tried to get the other break out speakers to go out for coffee with me.
(we spoke at 11:00)
ha ha ha
i shared about how Jesus wants us right where we are, no matter what we have done in our past.
there is no one “qualified” to be used by Him… none of us are and He uses us anyway!
i shared that it’s O K  and even good to DREAM with God & the setbacks we encounter when we do.
about how it’s really hard to see ourselves the way God does – we focus on our sins but God sees us clean.
and about how all the stories & events in our past are about God changing us for His good.

i also told them i was super worried that my spanx were showing since i was on the stage instead of the floor.

Stephanie (Honey) Holden spoke on sunday as our closer.
it just couldn’t have been better.
i had never met stephanie but i think she & i should have been friends forever.
she has the best accent!
i loved her stories, the way she read the bible and how she walked us through the verses.
and yes… i had been the crying just before this picture.
it’s not like i just walk around and burst into tears but when someone says something that touches my heart or hugs me when i need it or tells me good news (or sad news too)… the tears come.   it’s just me.  it started in seventh grade and i don’t think its stopping anytime soon.

IMG_3623IMG_3625
jeanne and i have been friends for a LONG time.  🙂
she’s super cool.  i always enjoy my time talking and laughing so much with her.
you should take her online art classes!
at the very least you should take part int the Becoming Class – it’s free and awesome!

we ate across the street by default at the Rodeo Goat.
it looks like a 4H building and i was very skeptical.
but like with most fun places… it looked weird but it was really GREAT!
i was wrong.
once i saw this wall… it was my new favorite place in the whole world.

IMG_3627
IMG_3629IMG_3633
isn’t this a funny picture?!  we all had such a good time together!
i got to meet Paige for the first time after ‘knowing” each other online forever!
blogging rocks.
so many online friends are every where!  it’s so fun to meet in real life!
paige i loved our meals together.  🙂

IMG_3666
i follow Ruth on Instagram but we had never met until thursday.
she was F U N!  i loved her from the second we met!
(partly because she walked up and said “oh my gosh you are so beautiful!” or something like that)
if you don’t follow her you are missing out!  her shop is RAD too.
she has 6 boys! (with a body like that) (inside joke)

just now i went to the #hopespoken on IG and stole all these pictures!
i wish i had thought to take each of them… and about 100 more.

IMG_3818IMG_3820

the speakers each were given “gift bags” which was kinda dreamy.
better life bagskatygirl designspersimmon printsintentional homelovishly25:40 Loveeclectic joy the lovely words

i felt spoiled! thanks to all the sponsors and to the Hope Spoken crew!
IMG_3665

Danielle, Casey & Emily – THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

so dear readers… you should go to hope spoken next year.
be brave!
meet new people!
get away from the everyday routine!
have FUN!
worship together.. grow… hear… experience!

i had heard how good it was and i was still skeptical… and it was SO GOOD!!!
i am so glad i went!
tickets go on sale May 1 for Hope Spoken 2016.
🙂

natalie - I hate to ask this here, but didn’t find the info on the hope spoken website. Does anyone know what the cost will be for 2016? Thanks!

Mindy - What a beautiful group of ladies. Good things happen when God gathers His people and open hearts are filled (and I am with you as far as the tears go…) to overflowing. Thanks for sharing! And what a lovely backdrop you all had – so sweet.

Lasso the Moon - I was so happy to meet you, Meg! I’ve been a reader for such a long time. You did great, and your talk was so inspiring. When you are in Dallas again, look me up! Let’s be friends!
Anna

Necole@seriouslysassymama - This makes me miss living in Dallas. Now we live in the burbs and it is jut too far to drive for all that yummy food!

Flower Patch Farmgirl - OMJosh. Hahaha
I’m on a mission to recreate that pickled onion taco… Fyi

Rebekah - I’m the same with the tears. There’s a Jewel song that that I think about sometimes that says, “I’m sensitive, and I’d like to stay that way.” That’s me. 🙂 Not in a bad way, just tender-hearted.

Tere - I so love you. Thanks for being you and always filling my heart with your amazing words….xoxo tere

Jen Dahl - i was looking at those tacos thinking, yeah, that looks pretty great. so I clicked on the locations, and wouldn’t you know there is one near me. guess what I’m having tomorrow night for dinner? YUM.

jessica - Thank you so much for mentioning us in this post! It seems like such a lovely time! We are working on going next year! Hope you enjoy your shirt!

Jenny - Sounds amazing! Can you share links to the shops for the swag you got? That shirt!

Lorraine - One of these years I’m going to get there!! It looks like such an incredible time of fun, fellowship and love!!

Karen - Can you still attend if you aren’t a blogger? 🙂

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - Your black dress – wow! You looked stunning. I so wish I could have been there to hear you. I know it was amazing!

Eugenia from Southern California - Oh my goodness, you are all so beautiful. My job sucks so much out of me, it’s nice to be reminded that there is purpose. I pray and my co-workers pray to remove the darkness from our workplace. Sometimes, its the one claiming to love Christ that cause so much havoc and suffering. Reading your witness really helps and encourages me to press on. Thank you for reminding the rest of us to answer His call. To have Hope and to feel worthy.

xxxooo e

Jenny B. - So glad it went well! I knew you would do great. 🙂

Restless: Because You Were Made for More
I am like… crazy for it.
i am thinking you would love it because it seems MOST of us are searching for MORE out of life?

IMG_3155
for our last night with my nieces we had a late night slumber party at the Craft House.
the little girls were shocked when i agreed to a SECOND movie at 10:30 pm!
i said “well this IS a slumber party!”
i painted while they watched.
🙂

IMG_3171
they played SORRY while i made gluten free pumpkin muffins.
to which we all agreed that they were a fail… they tasted like eating a plain sweet potato.
not what we wanted from our pumpkin chocolate chip muffins.
bummer.
at least we had other things to eat!

then we drove them home after our 5 days together…. such a great visit!

i am hoping to work on the paint project tomorrow and all weekend.
Hope Spoken is in a week… not freaking out but yet… totally freaking out.
i am excited about everything!
just nervous about my speaking – and i do not even know what i am going to say yet!
soon… soon… soon.   i can feel it coming together and swirling around in my head.
(thank you jesus!)
but just know that i will cry… if i stood up and gave the weather report i would STILL cry.
it’s just what i do.
i cry.

lastly… there is still ONE apron left in the shop.
i love her so much.
i can’t believe she’s left all  by herself… she’s the life of the party for sure.
beverly
maybe she appears too wild in photos?
she is royal blue, spring green and a beautiful bright pink… seriously such a great combo!
the turquoise and the lime green in the floral pattern are perfection!

have a super weekend!
i am DYING to finish my paint project to show the world because you are going to freak!!
it’s completely dreamy and rad.
🙂

must go to sleep now… it’s 12:53…yikes!

Flower Patch Farmgirl - Best way to start my day, right here. That bball shot of Talby (?) is so awesome! And I’m going to do snack dinner soon.

Andrea - Meg…I just love seeing peeks into your colorful world…..and your dogs just crack me up! Happy Spring!

Heather - Random thoughts that I can’t post on Facebook because I’m taking a break;

you prompted me to buy tulips yesterday, on the first day of spring

I read 7 last week while on holiday in Cuba and now I’m off FB and a moms board that I’ve been on for 12 years that consistently annoys me. LOL I am now reading A million miles in a thousand years, which you had recommended to me.

s - Totally random but what kind of curling wand is that and does it work as well as it looks like it does???!!

sharon / theprincipledtype.blogspot.com - i believe tulips go with Everything! (that’s my story and I’m sticking with it:))

Amy Woods - Lovely. All.

Stephanie - I LOVE that apron. It was that one, the Ruby, and a couple others that I picked out as my favorites. So if she looks too wild, I guess that’s my taste! Lol.

Kerry - Have you read “Anything” By Jennie Allen? I have it on hold at the library now.

Lynette L. - I love posts like this! You take the best pictures! Your dogs pose so well – mine is always moving so she is just a blur in the pictures I take.

Katherine @ Grass Stains - Meg, when I saw this idea, I knew I had to send it to you. It is SO YOU! I can see you doing this with your girls. 🙂

http://thehousethatlarsbuilt.com/2015/03/diy-painted-shoes-for-st-patricks-day.html/

beth larson - so….did Annie get the duck? So adorbs- and I can’t wait to see your painting project- this was a great post!! xo

ira lee - looks like a ton of fun and if you could just call me before the next week like this, that’d be great!! lol
