dude.
have you tried this ice cream???
not to be overly dramatic… but it is epic.
they were passing out little samples at our store and my girls got one and said “this is so good”
we circled around again (not on purpose) and this time i got a sample (and they got another).
i put the bite in my mouth and said “OH MY WORD! WHAT IS THIS?”
we bought it on the spot.
and maybe… possibly… got plastic spoons from the deli area and ate it straight from the carton on the way home from the grocery store.
it could’ve happened.
hypothetically.

i have trouble with button up shirts gaping open across my bustline but when i put the tape the problem is solved!

or to keep your tank top on top of your bra strap.

camp create spring 2016

ummm…. this post has like 100 photos.
you may want to get another cup of coffee!
rainbowhearts2
last week we had our third Camp CREATE!
🙂
we had 17 women in one house from 14 different states.
i love to see God pull people from all over to become friends at the Craft House.
and that is exactly what happens.
they nervously show up by themselves, pick out their beds, not knowing their roommates at all.
And by the time they leave they have real friendships with those who were strangers four days before.

FullSizeRender 13IMG_3922-2IMG_4562IMG_4565IMG_4453IMG_4470IMG_4433  IMG_4078IMG_4004IMG_3684

Dayspring, Reina’s cookies, Illustrated Faith, Crossway Publishing, Faith & Life Books, Timbabli Crafts, Paperworks, Perfectly Posh, Crave Popcorn Co. and Gracelaced each sent their product to bless the campers.
how awesome is that?!
i will blog all about each one of them in my next post AND i have a BIG giveaway too!

our speaker was author,  Amber Haines.
i read her book “Wild in the Hollow” last summer and asked her right away to speak at camp.
she is a lovely, poetic writer, wonderful speaker and a beautiful person.
we were given topics to work through all week during our quiet times.
she challenged us with reflective questions like “Who are you” ” What do you Desire?” “What name does God call you?”
not easy to answer quickly.
having the time together in such a small group with our speakers at camp is special.
i love how these girls were vulnerable with their answers and their hearts.
i loved every minute of amber teaching us.

IMG_4478
IMG_4472
kimberlee cooked delicious meals and desserts for us all week.
everything was SO GOOD!
it’s such a treat for the campers (and me too!) to not have to think about meals for several days.
you get to walk in and sit down to an amazing meal!
three times a day!
AND dessert!
that is sooooo not a regular mom’s life!
it is the best!

IMG_4509
jeanne oliver and laura kelley each taught a creative workshop during the week.
seriously… WOW!
i loved hearing their stories about how they have each developed their creativity over the years and how they have discovered more about God through out the process.

IMG_4601  IMG_4119
thank goodness jeanne brought enough gesso…

the project i taught was painting/designing their own tool bag/art tote.
they were given paint, fabric scraps, trims, glitter, ribbon and stamps and then they were free to create as they pleased.
i envisioned them using it for their bible journaling supplies or art supplies.
this project was inspired by Michelle Allen and Alissa Burke.
this was my bright bright bright bag.  🙂

we always take our girls out to Marion Kansas for some antiquing/junking.
We go to Bearly Makin’ It and to The Mill.
it is my favorite place to shop for the good stuff… chippy painted, rusty and old!
they have EVERYTHING.
and also… anything.  🙂
IMG_4830IMG_4561
i brought home this little green piano and these vintage curtain panels!
several girls brought home some great quilts.
there was even an 8 foot tall wind mill that went home with someone!

these women.
they have my heart in a major way.
they love the Lord in the fiercest of ways.
they are have big hearts for serving women… digging into their faith in jesus… and loving everyone around them.
i was truly honored to get to spend 5 days with these really cool chicks.
IMG_4651
IMG_4880
And these campers?!!  i have all the heart eye emojis for them!
what a special group!
we grew together, created together, prayed together, learned, shared, cried and OH MY WORD did we laugh together?!!!
these women were hysterical!

i am so amazed that God would use the creativity he put in me… to turn into something like Camp CREATE.
He is so good!
i loved listening to the women share on our last night about how they had been changed by being at camp.
how they made meaningful friendships!
they got to learn about and worship God through listening and in their creative time.
and that they were rested an going home inspired.
because THAT is exactly what i have wanted camp to be from the very beginning!
It is seriously so awesome to watch God work through out each camp.

my heart is filled up!
i am so grateful to every camper and helper for all that it took to make last week happen.

and i slept for three days when it was over.
HA!

🙂

details about the next Camp Create will be coming in the next week.

this week

i have been attempting to write this post for over a week but my computer is being dumb.
there seems to be a window right now where it’s working so i write.  🙂

my mind has been consumed with thoughts and planning for Camp CREATE coming up next week.
and shopping for it.
and prepping for it.
all while being a mom and that kind of stuff.
so… here are a bunch of phone pics of things that are going on recently.

IMG_2729
best shirt ever    (from hello apparel)

IMG_2876
i finally put up the cow bust that was my grandma’s.
it hung on the side of her sink and she used it as a towel holder for as long as i can remember.
i always loved it.
and i was so happy to have it for my home.

IMG_2973
working from home… a project that will come out in september.
IMG_3119
annie’s first spring break.

IMG_3001IMG_3071
we went to a Rend Collective concert.
have you heard of them?
we listen to them allllllll the time with our kids and some of the songs are sung at our church too.
my Rend Collective pandora station is one of my most favorites.
in this picture… i was watching the lighted beach balls that were bouncing around the crowd and never even saw that they put panda heads on.  HA!
i was looking through the photos and asked “what in the world?” to talby & annie and they said “yeah… they did that for a long time mom”
oh.
i guess i was distracted.
so funny.

IMG_3160
still trying to eat healthy.
a battle i feel i may never win because – cookies.
IMG_3224

IMG_3254
spring break dinner out that just happened to be on St. Patricks Day which made for a lively crowd. (aka: drunk)

IMG_3707
saturdays with no sports or major events are my faaaaaaavorite.
and the dogs like it too.
ha!
they get so many more opportunities to make me spill my coffee.
IMG_3716
IMG_3743
my friend Jenny sent me this ADORABLE wood sign for my house!
and i found a spot right away so i could see it everyday!
she has so many cute handmade signs in her shop.
i love every. single. one!
IMG_3766IMG_3807
this was Easter morning.
WHAT?
we haven’t had snow in two years in our area of kansas.
and on Easter sunday annie came in our room and shouted “IT SNOWED A TON!???!” and threw open our curtains.
we were shocked!

IMG_3828
FullSizeRender 5
FullSizeRender 7FullSizeRender 8
it was so bizarre to have all that snow!

IMG_3888
this was the most i did for Easter for my kids… everyone got a small chocolate bunny.

IMG_3862
IMG_3890
i have been “collecting” random pretty state or flower plates for a few years for maybe someday doing a big mosaic project.
but recently i was thinking of getting new dishes at home but dreading spending money on dishes that would inevidentally end up broken since the kids do all the dishes at our house… pro/con.
i realized i had tons of these dishes… they are fun to look at….they are unique… they cost .50 – $1.00 at our thrift store… i could just use these as our plates instead of buying a new set of fancy dishes.
It’s more my style anyway… eclectically unique/colorful/vintage/modern twist.
so now they are our everyday plates!
and i love them!
IMG_3989IMG_3987
camp prep – making name tags.
making projects.
IMG_4009IMG_4013IMG_3578
planning for camp looks a lot like this.
at several different stores.

IMG_4017IMG_4020
and at camp since we are together for several days we give everyone their own cup.
it helps keep track of which drink is which, cuts down on dishes and it’s cute!
lots of people asked on Instagram where i got them… you can find them RIGHT HERE.

IMG_3657
the same grandma that had the cow in her kitchen also used the phrase “happy plate” when we were good eaters and could have dessert.
and let me tell you… i was a really picky eater and they ate weird stuff.
i challenged the happy plate at every meal.
but i loved her tapioca pudding and usually ate enough to get it.
so i saw this plate in OKC and loved the memories it brought up.
and bought one for me and one my sister too.
FullSizeRender 4
marshalls and tjmaxx are my weakness.
i love finding stuff there!
like this rug… i have even brought it up to the register but haven’t bought it… yet.
it’s just so darn cheery!

IMG_3611
my mom found me this awesome tank on Zulily.
could it be any more perfect for me?!

IMG_4027IMG_4094
all that snow melted immediately… like by 5:00 it was GONE.
and spring is definitely here in kansas.
my chickens are loving the nice weather.
as much as i can assume a chicken loves anything.

IMG_4315IMG_4121
i found some fun stuff while thrifting the other day.
i don’t love green glass but i love when i find something unique and that water jar was just that.
but really i just love thrifting in general.
and the flowers were from Dillons.
because it’s a nice addition to any friday.

IMG_4084
scott went on a college visit last week (HOW?!) and these clouds were on my drive home.
deep blue and moving so fast.
i tried not think of them as some kind of metaphor for this new stage of life with my oldest son….
IMG_4147
we got our baby fix holding craig’s cousin’s baby on friday night.
he was dreamy… never made a peep.

IMG_4145
and my last pic for today… this was the scene i walked into after my house had been cleaned.
it’s all so C L E A N!!!
i smiled for an hour!
i have lots more i want to share but who knows what my computer will do the next week.
and camp starts in three days!
there is laundry to wash, beds to make, art supplies to organize, margaritas to make!
it’s going to be a very good week!

more Q & A – teenagers

so…. there were lots of questions about teenagers and raising big kids.

i can only speak from my experience of course.
and i’m no parenting expert but i can share what i think i’ve learned so far.

our home may be the complete opposite of yours.
with five kids i can say for sure that every kid is different & needs something different.
some kids are naturally obedient and would never want to rock the boat.
some kids are the opposite and want to tip your boat, their boat and everyone else’s within reach.
some kids are quiet.  some kids want to talk your ear off.
some kids get mad easily while others seem to be happy all the time.
and there are a hundred other personalities in-between those examples.

the frustrating reality of parenting is that just because you do every thing “right”,  follow all the advice you get and read all the books – it doesn’t mean they will fall in line and obey.
or that they will make the right choices.
or try harder in school.
or want to please you.
or even that they will like you!

they are humans with the right to choose good or bad… right or wrong…
sometimes no matter how loving, how wonderful,  how kind or how much fun you are… they still may not make the right choice.
and that part truly sucks.
meaning:  i like results.
and guarantees.
i want my kids to SUCCEED!  i don’t want them to mess up or have pain that could be avoided!
i want a formula for parenting teens that would go like this:  if you love God, love your kids, provide for them, feed them, go to their ball games, take them to the pool, bake cookies, play legos and host birthday parties then your kids will be well behaved, angelic, smiling lovelies that say “thank you so much mother for all that you do for me each day”
yeahhhh… it doesn’t work like that.
there is no formula.

when they are toddlers and babies their needs are met in such tangible ways… dry diaper, full stomach, good nap.
i really thought i knew what i was doing as a mom when my 5 kids were 10 years old and under.
i felt pretty proud of myself.
and then the teen years knocked me down several notches.
the teenage years with the hormones & cell phones & driver’s licenses & peer pressure – it’s a constant emotional roller coaster.
and then there are so many actual people in our home – we are like a theme park for feelings!

it may not be that way at your house.
maybe your house is calm and quiet and everyone behaves.
if so… lucky you.
feel free to stop reading and go find something to bake on pinterest.  🙂

maybe your kids would never say something hurtful to you.
or slam doors.
or unthinkable that they’d swear at you.
or say they hate you.

but the reality of life at our house is that it’s not peachy keen everyday.
i would never want people to look through this blog or Instagram and think that it was.
i mean it’s not a war zone but it’s real life with 6 – 7 personalities and needs flaring all at once.

i shocked myself the other night when i was driving alone and thought about how i never thought i would like these teen years or could like them since they aren’t cute cuddly babies anymore.  I am a baby lover and could hold babies all day long!  And now that is in my past and i realized i actually really do LIKE having a house full of teenagers!

even with the yelling or swearing or door slamming.

it’s not like that everyday.
but i can’t write about raising teenagers with out saying that those things could happen.
it doesn’t make me feel like we are failures.
it’s just real life.
it doesn’t make me a bad mom if they choose to react that way.
they are just people trying to figure out life and each interaction is a time to learn how to appropriately respond to conflict.

we do have LOTS of fun as well at our house.
they are all so funny.
there is laughter, hugs, happiness, complete silliness and even occasional dancing!

so… the only “advice” i could give seems to be the obvious things that i feel everyone already knows but i will share anyway.

LOVE your kids the best way you can.
try to figure out what makes them tick.
love them for who they are… not who you want them to be.
listen when they share with you.
try to love them in the way they respond the best.
show them that you are on their side and that you always will be.
encourage them! tell them they are awesome and you’re proud of them!
choose your battles… sometimes it’s just not worth it.
validate their feelings especially when others have hurt them.
sympathize when it feels like they will never recover from a break up or a mean girl incident.
listen when they are frustrated about a coach or teacher or a boss.
give them responsibility… don’t do everything for them… laundry, school work, job applications, alarm clocks.
if you don’t help them learn to do hard things – who will? who cares more about them than you?!
be strict when it comes to keeping them safe… parties, drinking, boyfriends/girlfriends, driving… etc.
making the hard calls is your job… YOU are the adult.
it’s not fun to be hated but YOU are the adult and you can handle that.
it won’t last forever.
they will eventually understand that you did it because you loved them.

they are going to mess up.
it could be small but also it might be in a really big way.
you have to be there when they fall… still loving them.
not giving up.

if you don’t know how to do these things on your own or situations are too difficult – find a counselor or therapist who can help you.
therapy is a good thing!
it helps so much to talk things through!  for you or for your kids or both!
i’ll say it again… therapy is good thing!

i do not see myself as doing everything right. (no way)
or that i have perfect kids. (heck no!)
but we are trying.
it’s hard.
harder than i ever thought it would be.
but it is worth it!

i was confused when my friend who was about 5 years ahead of me in mothering would say “teenagers are so much fun!”
i honestly thought she was either clueless or lying or both.
it used to make me mad actually.

and now… years later… having gone through so much… seeing my babies turn into a house full of teens and older…
now i get it!
it IS a beautiful, crazy and FUN stage to walk (& fumble) through.
you get to be a part of these amazing people’s journey into life on their own.
you get to go beside them and cheer them on!
it’s humbling.
and AWESOME!

there are so many prayers said for our kids.
we pray that they would come to know jesus as their savior.
that they would love him deeply in their heart.
we pray for protection over them.
we pray they would make right choices.
and be kind to others.
we pray for the ability to love them the way He wants us to.
and we trust that the God who created them has the best plan for them.
we trust that He will continue to love them unconditionally.
we have hope in Him to cover our parenting mistakes with his grace and mercy.

it’s HARD but God is big enough to take care of you, your kids and mine too!

heart day!

according to the united states of america i am supposed to be watching the Super Bowl right now.
but i have been to so many games in the last three days that i could literally NOT care one tiny bit.
i saw that beyonce forgot her pants again this year and that was plenty.
so instead i crawled into my warm cozy bed and wrote a post about Valentine’s gifts.

we don’t celebrate valentine’s too much over here.
we just haven’t ever made it a big deal?  i have no reason for this.
but this year… it’s kind of inched it’s way into my head.
i am thinking about baking cookies and heart garlands and all the valentines-y goodies.
i started making a little list of fun valentine’s gifts or just fun stuff in reds & pinks and the list got out of control!
it’s a long one.
maybe you should show this post to your significant other…    🙂
it couldn’t hurt right?!
i found so much cute stuff out there that would be perfect for gifts!
for friends or family or spouses or boyfriend/girlfriend or your kids or even a gift for yourself!
