day two.

i am still here at the goPro reunion in colorado.

IMG_20120824_094332

there are over 20 laptops and cords and phones and cameras laying ALL over the place in this house.
it's completely awesome.
it's a happy mess that this group "gets" and enjoys and appreciates.

IMG_6080-1

we enjoyed an awesome skype session about marketing with amy fraughton of photo business tools.
she was encouraging and inspiring.

IMG_20120824_140935

wendy & tyler are wonderful instructors…patient…understanding and kind.
the enviornment at GoPro is so relaxed and noncompetive.
it's so refreshing to not feel like you have a dumb question or out of your league.
they are so good at making everyone feel empowered!
what a gift they have and i am SO grateful that they share it so openly.

IMG_6083-3
there was lots of time for questions and answers.

IMG_6086-5

yummy lunch for 20+.
IMG_6089-6

and later in the evening we headed out for a family shoot to practice.
i get such a kick out of watching a workshop shoot….all those cameras.

steamy….right??  crazy amounts of beautiful at this shoot.
and the kids all behaved like angels.
it was basically a dream shoot for any photographer.

and it made me miss shooting families.
i kinda wish i had 10 more hours in a day so i could still do it…and run craft weekend…and raise my family….and create….and sew…and clean the house….well, maybe not clean the house. 🙂
i do miss interacting through photography.
maybe someday i can come back to it.
i hope so.

IMG_20120824_215201

after our shoot was lots and lots more talking about photography and everything else.
and then the traditional wild and rowdy game of spoons.
wendy won.
i think it was possibly rigged….

loving it all so much here at goPro.
i hope your day is going great too.
i hear it's raining in kansas – YAY!!!
i am sad to miss it.

Driveway Cleaning Birmingham - I really enjoyed reading this blog. Many thanks for putting it down in writing. I have been looking for information about for some time.

Amy Fraughton - Thanks for the shout out! It looks like an amazing, amazing weekend!! So smart for you to be there!

Debbie Hargadon - The Dad kissing the little girl on the cheek is an all time keeper! No one else’s photos could possibly be any better than yours Meg. So much emotion and feeling captured. That is the best. What fun learning experiences you get to enjoy as technology changes at lightning speed. Thanks for sharing.

Jodi - I agree…SPOONS was definitely rigged! Ha!….Oh and I might of lost a finger from (cough, cough) someone. 🙂

Tracy - We had a nice steady rain here in Kansas City this morning. It was glorious!! Have a good Sunday, Meg!

Wendy - “…the kids all behaved like angels” – did someone slip them some Benadryl? Once in a while the stars and moon alighn and a shoot goes easy-peasy … but usally I’m running around like a nut!

Happy girl - This is a seriously good looking family. Hey just for fun, are there more Macs or PCs in the house. 🙂

Sarah{Handbags*N*Pigtails} - Looks like a great time. And I was totally thinking the same thing(as the commenter above). I LOVE that momma’s necklace!

A Facebook User - I really need that gorgeous lady’s necklace..it is awesome!!!

IMG_3603-3
i mean really….just try to tell me what is happier than that?!!

it is the best site to see.

IMG_3604-4
every detail amazes me.

it's about 8 inches across and hasn't even opened yet….it is  B E A U T I F U L !!!

IMG_3615-5
sean held annie up to see a bug inside that one.
they had a blast running around this old farm.

IMG_3630-9

GRASSHOPPER!!!

i didn't see that in my lens….or when it uploaded….i noticed it when put it on the blog.
i absolutely LOVE that picture!

IMG_3637-12

only about half of the flowers were open when we came by.
which made me giddy just thinking about coming back.

IMG_3634-11

IMG_3638-13
my kids asked if we could build a house right here so we could see the flowers and climb that tree.

IMG_3641-14

IMG_3725-1
talby took this picture of the lady bug!
amazing.

IMG_3646-16

IMG_3644-15

IMG_3649-17

i am not prejudiced….i love dead sunflowers too!

IMG_3650-18
one of the things i love about sunflowers is that they are solid and study.
they have big leaves….they have layers and layers of seeds and petals.
God creates each one so intricitly.
His creation is so detailed.
IMG_3655-1

she found her twinsie in size.
🙂

thank you Lord for reminding me of how detailed You are in the world.
every seed.
every petal.
Thank you God for caring about every hair on my head….every tear…every hurt….every joy in my life.

and for showing me that in a field of sunflowers.

God is awesome.

Mary - LOVE all of these pictures(the grasshopper one totally blows me away), and i love even more the fact that God IS so awesome! how humbling to know that He’s all about the details, in each of our lives.
super awesome, great, wonderful post. 🙂

katey - Your grasshopper picture is totally my favorite. I think you could have that published!!!! Love it!!!

elizabeth highsmith - He sure is! Thank you for passing on a beautiful reminder!

Chrissy - Gorgeous pictures (and children!)!
Thankfully, someone pinned something from your blog and I have found you. 🙂
ReadWriteSing

Natalie - the grasshopper… AWESOME!!! Since you love sunflowers, I knew I had to share… The tornado that drove thru the state of Alabama, “April’s Fury 2011” missed my home by about a mile. It was devastating. At least TEN families in my church lost everything. It was life changing, physically and spiritually for our state. Months after as families still tried to make sense of the disaster and families searched, rebuilt… The coolest thing EVER happened~ all over, in the most random spots, popped up the most beautiful SUNFLOWERS! Apparently seed from different bird feeders were scattered EVERYWHERE! To me, it was this great sign of HOPE, growth! IT was BEAUTIFUL! You would have loved it!! GOD IS AWESOME! 😉
Enjoy your stories!!! Blessing to you and your family!
Natalie

Sarah H. - God is awesome! You don’t know me from Adam, but we planted sunflowers in our garden this year and every time I look at them I think of you and your love for sunflowers! My sweet 5 year old daughter and I love our’s too. I love, love that grasshopper. That is print worthy for sure!

Lisa - I’m blessed to drive by a sunflower field every morning as I take my son to day care. A big field of big happy sunflowers, basking in the rising sun, every one of them facing the east like lines of sunflower soldiers. So beautiful. Must remember to take my camera one day soon.

ira lee - i love sunflowers too. i meant to plant some with my kids this spring but i forgot. ive heard they are easy to grow!!!

elisa - These are great! Love 🙂

Melissa - Sean seems like such a great big brother!

Robin - Thank you for this post! Your photography is unbelievable – truly magical – especially the grasshopper – the best photo I have seen! I am always so inspired when I read your blog – it is one of three that I MUST visit EVERY day! That grasshopper picture belongs in National Geographic, or the National Gallery of Art!!!! It is truly spectacular!
What kind of lens do you use? Your pictures are always so clear and vibrant.
Thank you for the joy you bring us every day. Yes, God is amazing.

cath w - Good grief.

Jenn B - I Love this post! Sunflowers bring me joy too. We have one growing in our yard that is taller (by almost a foot) that my husband and he is 6’2″! They are huge and truly God’s amazing work. My favorite picture is the grasshopper one. I love that you didn’t even know you got it. Awesome!

the.mrs - indeeeeed! i feel the same giddy feeling looking at bananas. I know, weird, right?! But next time you open a banana look closely, they’re glittery. 🙂 I mean seriously, God loves glitter as much as I do. And they break into 3 right down the middle. Unless you’re lucky and get one that breaks into 2. God’s creation rocks.

Jessica at Me Sew Crazy - wow. Just wow. Amazing photos, amazing praise, and amazing grasshopper. I am pretty sure you found Jimini Cricket.

Becki - Beautiful!

jeannett - sigh…
love it.
all of it.
missing you.
owen said he needs you to cuddle him.

Lisa - Love everything you said

Heather - “Thank you God for caring about every hair on my head….every tear…every hurt….every joy in my life.
and for showing me that in a field of sunflowers.
God is awesome.”
Thank you for a beautiful post and an important reminder. I needed that today. So Much!

Rachel Spin - Love your pictures. Do you have a flickr account? My fave is the grasshopper photo as well as many above. I also love that the sunlight is composed right at the face of the flower. Awesome light and cute little bug.
God’s creation always inspires me and to grab my camera. His glory surrounds us every day.

rachel - lovely captures! 🙂

karen gerstenberger - God is awesome; I agree. Your grasshopper photo reminds me of the books by Eric Carle, especially “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” Did your kids have that one? It’s adorable, like you and your family.

Flower Patch Farmgirl - That grasshopper pic is the What-What! I fell in love and didn’t notice the grasshopper until I scrolled down. Tricky dude.

Mindy Harris - such a sweet post, megan

A gentleman down the road used to have a field of sunflowers and I always smiled as I drove by. They are a very cheerful flower!

Suz - great photos! God is a creative GENIUS! And weird to think that we live in a fallen world that is not even perfected yet…really something to look forward to…I can’t even imagine!! xoxo

shannon - Pretty sunflower pics. They are perfect Summer and Fall flowers. Great pic with the three of your cuties standing infront of them.

Kirsten W - I feel the same way as you do about sunflowers! They are really awesome!! And your photos are just fantastic – love, love the one of the grasshopper!

colleen from alabama - I needed that today. I have sunflowers on my table and i need to be reminded that God is in the details… especially the painful ones right now. Thanks for helping me to see things a little differently!

Amanda - I love sunflowers! Your pictures are so beautiful, and you are correct, God is awesome! 🙂

sandee prince - great post meg!

Kristin - just joy!

Carla TV - Amen! Thank you for sharing the beauty. 🙂

sara @ it's good to be queen - i love how you notice and appreciate God’s creation as His expression of love for us. what a gift.

Beth K. - Just the reminder I needed today – God is awesome!! I just lost my job today of 15 years with no forewarning – devastating! Trying to stay positive and find something new to help support our family of six. Thanks for providing this wonderful post for me today! Just what I needed! God Bless You Meg!

Jen Brandt - Beautiful flowers. Beautiful children. Beautiful God.

Jodi - The Grashopper picture is SERIOUSLY AWESOME! Love it!

Cathy - So beautiful! God really is so awesome…always!

Laura - Love the hiding Grasshopper!!! Fabulous pic!

Trish @TheOldPostRoad - Nature makes me feel sorry for all of those who think everything just ‘evolved’ without God. Honestly! This beauty around us just could not ‘appear’ out of no where without our amazing God! Thanks for the reminder!
-Trish

melodee - I love them, too! your pix are amazing and just ooze summer:) and so true…God IS so awesome!

Robin Canter - Makes me want to bust out singing “I’m walking on sunshine, whoa… and it makes me feel GOOD!”

Dani - Love this post!
This past weekend we were driving home from a conference and I saw a field of sunflowers. Immediately I thought of you! Your pictures are amazing. I felt like I could reach out and touch the flower!

Alisa - With the gift of the little grasshopper peeping out…..it was kind of like God was saying, “Thank you for enjoying what I have made.” Love.

stephany - Sunflowers are my favorite!
When we got married the florist asked me what I wanted for flowers and I said, “There HAVE to be sunflowers. I don’t care about the rest.”
My husband calls me “Sunny”.

Sarah Syhakhoun - Gorgeous post! Every summer I look forward to your miraculous sunflower photos. They pull at my heart – each and every one of them!
I have to admit that I’m a little creeped out when up close to a sunflower, but they sure are beautiful!

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - Amen!
We need to name the grasshopper.
He is adorable!

seriously sassy mama - So what I needed to read today. I love sunflowers. I almost changed my whole wedding after seeing sunflowers in a Martha Stewart Wedding mag. I love how earthy and yellow they are.

Ruth Elder - I would love to be able to get a copy of your 7th. picture blown up through that picture-to-canvas service you post about. Is there a way to do that?

Kelly Henderson - Thank you for such wonderful morning inspiration… I’m heading out on a walk with a happy heart (I’ll look for sunflowers;)

Casey - Wow, simply gorgeous. God is, indeed, awesome 🙂 I love that grasshopper shot – how amazing!

Kristin S - Love, love, love!
Also love Annie’s sweet pose in the threesome pic.
Love a sweet big brother giving sister a boost.
Love taking time to enjoy the little (big) things.
Thank you Meg!

Kimberly Dial - Meg, your pics are always awesome, your kiddos adorable & your words inspirational … thank you for sharing! (Sunflowers are pretty wonderful!)

Terrie G - Sunflowers make me weak in the knees!
I hunt for fields of them!
They are one of my favorite things to photograph…

Well Done!

Niki - Amen and amen!! I am so taken with how deeply God knows His creations…be it flowers or people! I love that He KNOWS me inside and out! I have nothing unknown and He loves me anyway! 🙂

Heather F. - Thank you for the beautiful pictures. I love the surprise grasshopper! That would be a great tree to build a house by. Your kids have a great eye.

Lindsey@ Piecefully Home - God is awesome and so is that tree! I want to climb it. 🙂

tara pollard pakosta - BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!

so….this summer has been redonk.
i have yet to have one day where i felt like i was truly "enjoying summer"
i have felt like i just go from one thing to the next.
pick up from a practice.
drop off.
pick up.
go here.
run there.
we never even made a summer list because there has not been TIME!!!
that is the opposite of the meaning of the summer list.

i am ready for july.
i want to be past all these camps, sports and activities and just RELAX with my kids.
make crafts.  try new recipes.  turn off the the darn TV!!!

july is going to be for relaxing.
slowing down.
enjoying my time with my kids.
and i am going to try to become a morning person and run earrrrrly.

YAY july.
maybe we'll make a july list.

🙂

Honeybee Mama - i have been feeling the same thing! we never made a summer wish list and i was thinking this morning that it’s never too late to do so. we might just do that this afternoon. we have to catch the moments in the midst of craziness!

Sarah @This Farm Family's Life - It’s the opposite here. June was the slow month for us and july is busy!

sandy toe - I love your family picture!! So cute!
sandy toe

Jenni - Oh, I feel for you! Our summer so far has been crazy too, and like you I am looking forward to July! I hope you have a very restful, beautiful summer, with plenty of time for crafts! 🙂
Have a wonderful {hopefully more relaxed} Monday! 🙂
Blessings,
Jenni

Heidi Jo the Artist - I don’t know how you guys do it. Run here, run there… Do the kids really enjoy all those activities, or would they rather spend the day with you? To each their own–I understand. Hope you get the downtime you are craving!
Beautiful turquoise bird dish! What a amazing piece to remember your great aunt’s life.
Love your garden btw. I don’t have as much as I would like in ours, but it is better than last year, so that is a start. 😉
Hope you are having a wonderful weekend!

Amy Lynne - We’re in the same boat…now all the planned/scheduled things are behind us, it’s time to chill and enjoy our summer! Here’s to a great July!

Erin - I feel the same way!

Johanna - Exactly!!! I am craving that down time to just BE… and I am going to try and become a morning person and run early with you too!!! In spirit anyway:) Love the little bird thing from your great aunt and I love seeing the finished product of your family pics that I read about a ways back… Love-love-love it:) What a gorgeous bunch! Thank you for writing your blog, I so look forward to reading it<3

denise@victory rd. - the daily message by peterson here, too. psalm 91 really messed with me this week. it’s good to be messed with.
my summer fun list hasn’t made it anywhere official. it’s in my pleated poppy covered notebook, where the kids can’t see it and where i can’t feel guilty for not checking many things off already.

Flower Patch Farmgirl - Oh dear. I just said a collective prayer for the both of us when I saw that pic of the dishes drying on the counter. If you need pointers on how to build the very best dish tower, hit me up. I’m the reigning Queen.
ps – It’s possible to just “become” a morning person? That doesn’t sound right…

Tracy Fisher - I hear ya sister! Last night I sat in the rain and watched my son’s baseball practice. I didn’t have to be there. My husband showed up to help out. But I stayed. Not normally me. Ususally rushing off to the next thing. But I turned to the only other mom there and smiled. We laughed at ourselves in flip flops in the rain with dust everywhere. It felt good! Enjoy your July!!!!

AmyM - Thanks for writing this. I have been feeling this too. Our summer is busy and full of fun stuff, but not much sitting around relaxing time yet. I so love the huge canvas of your family on your mantle. How large is it? Love your blog as always! We made the corn salad from Craft Weekend and everyone loved it! Thanks for sharing! Maybe we’ll make a “Before School Hits in the Fall” list. 🙂 Happy 4th!

Renee - Our June has been the EXACT same way. I’m a teacher and I start in a new district August 1… Guess that leaves me in the same place… July is for relaxing 🙂 Happy relaxing to you!

Valerie @ Chateau A La Mode - I thought you did make your summer list, but I guess that was last year’s…see where my mind is? Life is going so fast I thought you already made one…HA! Enjoy your July and P.S. it starts tomorrow 😉

plumbing - Its a very good practice for your kids to have some time to enjoy the beauty of nature as well as letting them know how to take care of nature. Such a very great article.

Vanessa - Love your real life! Keep the good work!

Kat - Just to give you some perspective, it is winter here in Tasmania, Australia and cold.
I was just thinking how I feel in a bit of a winter rut, so soak up that sun and enjoy it, even the busy days.
Before you know it winter will have come round again 😉
I absolutely love your family pic with all the heads together and the realness of your kitchen sink pic.
Sometimes every day is so much easier than showy show homes. Well that is my excuse and I am sticking to it!! 🙂

Kelly - I am so, so glad that we are not the only ones who feel like we haven’t settled into summer yet. June has been hectic! Kelly

Alicia @ La Famille - i am soooo ready for summer to slow down, like right now! it’s been going way too fast and i don’t see it slowing down anytime soon. i guess i’ll make the most of the days that we don’t have anything going on 🙂

Stephanie - Love your blog and photos! Wondering if you know what happened to your blog friend “pieceofcake” Laura? Can’t access her blog anymore….

julia - My summer starts Monday. No more stupid college class for the high schooler. No more volunteering. No more theater camp. DONE!!!

Cori - Such beautiful photos. You make me want to come and join your family. If there’s one extra at your table, just pass me the blueberries and I’ll be happy!

Kristin S - Meg, always my fave posts. Every day normal.
And, while I’m sure she hates to be on the blog since she’s a teenager, it is fun to see your oldest daughter in a pic.

lisa - Beautiful pics! What a sweet little dish from your aunt, too. How special.
So how are the watercolors from Target? Are they as good as crayola? I was going to pick some up but didn’t know if they were cheapies.

mae - Beautiful pictures!! Once July hits and life slows down a bit, you might like this craft my friend did… It’s “Ice Painting” I think you’d like it. Perfect for summer! Here’s the link to her craft: http://buttonsbirdsandbs.blogspot.com/2012/06/hot-days-cool-art.html
Love the photos of the garden!!! Your tomatoes look a LOT better than mine 🙂

Maria - I’m ready for July! Swim team will be winding down…scout camps over…just vbs in early July, then we’ll have about 2 weeks of absolutely nothing. Cannot wait.
Then school.
bleck.

Linda - Love the glimpses of you real life. It makes mine seem more normal! I hope it slows down for you!

SoCalLynn - I agree, my family hasn’t done anything FUN yet this summer. My daughter is in summer theater. I have to drive 30 minutes each way 3x a week/ twice a day because I am not staying around there for 5 hours. Money is tight this summer so we haven’t done much at all. Theater ends at the end of July with 4 performances, so I guess we’ll squeeze in some beach and fun days then?

Jenna@CallHerHappy - I loooove that pic of your family on the mantle. It is so happy 🙂 Also, I am in love with the determination in Annie’s face on the diamond. Way to go, Annie!

Kerstie Pederson - B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L bird dish from your aunt.

Heather - Love that sweet turquoise bird from your great aunt. 🙂
How do you like the daily Message devotional? I’ve been on the lookout for a new daily spiritual read, and I like the idea of using a devotional with that translation, because it makes the words seem fresh and new (keeps my brain from going on autopilot, you know?). Have you been enjoying it?

Becki - I can appreciate this post. For the first time in a year and a half, I finally have some time to spend with my two girls without having to run older kids everywhere. (The last of our foster children left two weeks ago.) I’m savoring summer, but I also know that these little ones will be the very ones later that will have many obligations and running to do in a few short years. So for now, I’m just enjoying every moment.

Tiffany - My favorite picture was everyday. Keeping it reals. But I now want an art table, hello flea market on Sunday!

Meredith - We did our summer list last weekend and hung it up. My boys love it. We sit as a family and make up what is going to be on it. We have done more things as a family so far this summer than we have done in a long while and it will only get better. Making and effort and finding the time, it is hard but we do it. I am not a morning person, but I am a morning runner. 8:30am on the weekend, I am meeting someone tomorrow to run. It is great, you will love it, once you wake up.

lindsey - I love the turquoise bird dish! I hope the summer slows down for you.

christine ishmael - Just got back from my morning walk and this was the topic of conversation…summer is going by fast and we’ve yet to have any days of just hanging out doing summer stuff! Too much going on…I am working hard to simplify so life is not so crazy but no luck so far! Hang in there, I’m right there with ya! 🙂

Heather F - No summer list! The only reason I made a summer list is because yours were so inspiring. Don’t worry. There is time. Summer’s not gone yet.

Lori Austin - I like real life pics.
Just finished our summer list last night. 🙂
Here’s to July!!
p.s. love the bird dish

Samantha Bayer - July is a good month to relax, hope it happens 🙂

Kim - Hooray for relaxing in July! It sounds like you need it. A July list sounds like a good idea! Yesterday was the last day of school around here. Yep. Today is the first day of summer vacation. We’re taking it easy this summer. Swimming lessons start next week, a trip to a cottage and NYC, but other than that we’ve nothing planned. Perhaps we need to make a summer list today.
So a couple of questions… is it always so hot during the summer in Kansas? 100! Eeek! How do you manage? Or is it just me with my Canadian blood that wants to hide from that heat? Is it humid? Weather is one thing that Canadians love to talk about. Can you tell? Perhaps because our weather can change drastically (like 20 degrees) from one day to the next.

Allison - I’m insanely jealous of your large garden, mine is only about 1/8 of that size. I can’t believe it is the end of June already. This summer is going WAY to fast!

Heather S. - Sister – your June sounds like most of mine in the past. I refused to do it this year. My girls got to pick one camp and one sewing class each. Done. This summer we are swimming, baking, walking, biking, crafting, and a LOT of reading! Loving it! Hoping your July brings you the rest you need!

jennibell - I have felt like that too. Glad that the kids are enjoying themselves. . .and sleeping well. . .and NO TV. . .but yesterday seemed like a rat race all because I wanted to go to the pool for a couple of hours. I couldn’t believe how much I *didn’t* get done when I tried to relax. Sigh. Such is life with four children who are involved — I wouldn’t change that part. We (I) go back to school July 19th and the kids the 25th so we’re looking at our last weeks now. I’ve got some things checked off the summer list, so that is good. Hope you have a chance to slow down soon!

Kim - Relaxing in July sounds great! And it sounds like you need it! I think a July list is a good idea. My kids just finished school yesterday. Yup. Today is the first day of summer vacation around here. Hooray! Swimming lessons start next week.

Janelle - I like your sink picture…and I always love your laundry pictures. It makes me feel better after looking at some picture perfect blogs 😉

Jen Brandt - Our lives are parallel. I had a meltdown Monday night because I felt like I didn’t have a hold on summer. How sad is that to feel like I have to have a “hold” on a season?! I keep telling myself we’re going to slow down, relax, and enjoy summmer more after the 4th, too. Weird. I’ve heard so many moms say this this summer. What’s up with that?
Love the blue bird dish from your great aunt. Love the pic of Annie, too. My daughter, Katy, just finished first grade and in her league they wear pants and looonnnnngggg socks. At least her team is royal blue with grey pants. One of the opposing teams is wearing black pants. Must be men making these decisions! Anyway…have a wonderful RELAXING weekend.

Susan - Oh my, I am so sick of swim team. I stay and swim while she practices but the meets are brutal! It was 106 degrees Monday!

Lisa Q - I am feeling the same way…but I guess after reading happy girl’s comment, I’m thankful for the full and the overflowing busy-ness…we’re off to run more errands today! I’ll make sure to smile!

happygirl - I miss busy summers. Now that it’s just me and my husband and I just go to work every day and come home… summer isn’t the same. Don’t get me wrong, I love it, but it isn’t the same as, whew, thank goodness it’s summer. 🙂

Rosalina Johnson - Couldn’t agree more!!
I feel the exact same way!
Luv luv luv your blog!

Curious Details - Hope you get to catch your breath and make your summer list 🙂

Leah - I agree with you on summer being hectic so far. I can’t believe it’s already July! We did make a summer list: http://leahsthoughts.com/2012/06/14/the-summer-list/ . But my daughter’s been so busy with camp, we haven’t done much. Oh well. There’s always July and August! BTW, I LOVE these photo posts you do!

my kids are off of school next thursday!
how did this sneak up so quickly??
i am ready for a change but not quite ready to give up my quiet days….but i guess i will survive.

june is FULL of camps and swim team and softball so i am pretty sure we'll stay busy enough.

so last night while my little girls played croquet and i drank my coffee,
i picked up my camera and shot this jar of daisies i had cut at the craft house on sunday.

IMG_1243-1

then i zoomed in…..and got a little carried away with detailed pictures.

enjoy.

hmmm.

its only 17 days away…. ugh.

happy tuesday to ya!

Michelle Z. - You’ve mentioned before that the 24-70 is your only lens. Do you find it’s weight to be an issue? I love that lens, but I always hesitate to bring it with me on vacations and long day trips because of the weight.

Donna R - Kathleen Kelly would have loved these pics! Made me smile to see that quote…love that movie!

Life with Kaishon - I love daisies! These are so pretty! My son is SO ready for school to be over. I think he has 3 weeks left…he is not too excited about that at all.

Andrea - You always have the best post timing. My mom passed away this year and mothers day was rocky, but her fav flower was the daisy and you just put an amazing smile on my face 😉

Lorie - I am so looking forward to summer. THings slow down quite a bit for us in the summer and I am looking forward to that!! I hope your last week of school is a peaceful one for you.

Lori Austin - I love that movie 🙂
Some of these pics would be pretty in the grey bathroom at the craft house. They are so cheery.

Rhonda Fendt - I love love love your pictures… it was because of some sunflowers pics you posted last year that I started following your blog! I now I love you too! You are an inspiration to many!
Thank you : )

Linda - Love the beautiful pictures! This is why I love your blog! Just a simple daisy… makes me so happy thank you.

Maria - We have 4.5 days left…I am ready to be done with those homework days…quiet time, not so much.
Swim team will take over our summer too…almost done with baseball though…
And, yay….no more alarms…

ivy - I want your lens. :)And you talent…that would be good too. 🙂

Sarah Wolfe - I’m seeing a canvas of one of these shots in the craft house.. 🙂

Sarah{Handbags*N*Pigtails} - Our last day of classes is 10 days from today but we have the kids for an entire school week after that so we’re coming up with theme days( making homemade ice cream, treasure hunt, etc…) I cant believe its almost “summer vacation.” Hard to believe it but I survived my first year back of teaching!
Then its summer camp and off to Central America for hubby and I. Four days after we get back home school starts back up. Ugh. I dont like thinking about that part.:(

Sabrina - I adore, You’ve Got Mail… and daisies!

Maria at inredningsvis.se - LOVELY PICS:) I really like your blog and I want to follow..do you have twitter or FB??
If you want some swedish decor inspiration, you can check out my blog:)
Have a great week.
LOVE Maria at inredningsvis.se
(Sweden)

holly - Beware of the last week of school. we get out this week and everyone is on edge….sending the whole crew off to my mama as soon as they are done. If they survive…..

Kimberly Dial - Love it! My favorite quote from my favorite movie about my favorite flower … perfect! I think we have 11 more days of school here in WV … summer is fastly approaching … I sure hope it slows down & stays a while 🙂

ko. s - Happy happy daisies and one of my favorite quotes!

Whitni - Do you have any of these prints available for purchase somewhere? My dining room could really use some sprucing up, and daisies are my favorite flower!

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - Kathleen Kelly 🙂 I’ve told you before about how my full name is Kathleen. My wedding flower is a daisy. I’d really like to open up a children’s bookstore. I’m pretty sure that movie is about me 🙂

Lisa - Can’t wait to see your summer list!
We have done one the last 2 yrs. Best
idea ever! Your pics are beautiful. Am finally
learning to use my camera in manual.
You make me miss running. Too hard on
my back and knees though. 🙂

Leah - So pretty. And I totally thought of Kathleen Kelly when you said daisies! Are you making your summer list?! Please share! I need ideas. My daughter is off in 3 weeks. Yikes!

Melissa - If I could, I’d send you a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils… beautiful pictures!!

tiffany gardner - my very favorite flower!

Jen Brandt - As I looked at these daisy pictures, all I could think was, “Wow. God is awesome.” Love you, love your daisy pictures, and love all of my backyard daisies!

Karen Gerstenberger - I think you have your subject for your next day of drawing/painting! Those close-up daisy photos are glorious – and look at the design in the center of them!
To answer your question (below), we had a lovely Mother’s Day weekend, and I’m so grateful for it – and glad that you had a good one, too. We visited both grandmothers and I got to spend time with my guys. Motherhood is a wonderful gift, and God is so good to give us – and allow us to become – mothers!

Southern Gal - Love daisies and You’ve Got Mail.

Shar - Amazing photos!!

sofie - I can’t believe you’re a mother of 5 kids and are still way more motivated than this 22-year old student to go for a run. Lesson learned. 🙂

Seriously Sassy Mama - i use one lens, the one that came with my camera. I figure until I learn to use my camera, I will save my money. I love that movie. Funny thing, I was just moving a candle from my kitchen to my coffee table, and I thought about Kathleen, and how she always moved her vase of flowers to the room she was in. I do that with my candle. Have a great run. i just did squats. I stop and do them throughout the day.

Lauryn - Daisies are such a simplistic joy 🙂
Your kids are out much earlier than mine. We go until June 7th. My kiddo is ready for school to be out!!

Mollie - Wow, only seven days! This school year flew by!!
Love those flower pics!

christiejayne - You’ve Got Mail is my favorite movie!! They are the friendliest flower!! Beautiful pics!!

Suzette - Gorgeous photos! I’m going to run out and buy some daisies right now! Oh wait, I’m in my pajamas (CA girl)…I guess I’ll go in an hour! Thanks for all of your colorful inspiration!

angela - Run Meg, Run!

Courtney - I love these!!! So pretty!!!

Georgia - So pretty! brightens up my rainy UK day… what Lens are you using for these close ups? x

so i said yesterday i was missing pam and dreaming about going back to africa.
it's on my mind everyday.
i feel like…. i am in some kind of pull between what i know is right and what i do anyway….like shopping among many other things.
i know that spending money on "things" that mean nothing is not right.
meaning: it's worthless.
but i like those things….cute clothes….shoes….new jewelry.
but it means NOTHING to God.
and shouldn't i care about what God cares about?
shouldn't i want what HE wants for me?

i know that He does not want my time and thoughts and money to be spent on clothes and nothingness.
even if i do look super cute…i can't take it with me when i die.
going to africa to visit pam doesn't mean i can't go shopping…it's not that.
it means i feel messy in my heart and mind and can't make sense of it yet.
God is the only one who can resolve this issue in me.
and He will keep working on me i am sure of that.

IMG_9979-1

then i got these books….and i'm done for.
i am on chapter ONE of katie's book and i canNOT stop the tears.
the entire time….every word….crying.
have you read this book?  after only chapter one i would say YOU SHOULD.
and her blog?
it will wreck you.

and i am scared to read seven.
very scared.

pam and i email each other quite a bit.
her emails are so special to me.
i read them over and over.
once i read them out loud over dinner because she and i were coresponding back and forth right then.
i wanted my family to be amazed at what God is doing through them and for them.
IMG_5504

her son wrote a book and it's on kindle!
he is so talented.
we downloaded it on sean's kindle and he loved it!
sean said "that is so cool that jake wrote it AND it's on kindle!"
it inspired him.
it's called The War Horn….you can download it here for $2.99
he's using the funds to help raise money for a trip back to the US to go to a writing camp….awesome.

way to go jake.
i am so proud of you!

and now….on a completely DIFFERENT subject

i am going to take the year off from taking family photos.
i just can't get it all done.
it makes me sad but coming to that decision has been a relief.
there are things i want to do but haven't because the photo season loomed over my head.
thinking "i won't have time once pictures start up again"

IMG_0252-1
i did do one session.
love them.
levi and griffin are just plain cute in every way.
and tickling works for smiles when the chickens were too distratcing behind me.

🙂

thank jess and joel for being my only clients this year.

ha!

i have a lot of you ask about my lens and camera.
i use a Canon 50D and i only own one lens….canon 24-70 f/2.8
so every picture on this blog for two years now has been with that lens.
unless they are my phone pictures.

tom petty was really good.
his voice sounds exactly the same as it ever has…it was pretty incredible.
he was so gracious "thank you so much!" after every song and sounding like he deeply meant it.
it is so crazy to sit at a concert & look at the performer that wrote a song that i have been singing my whole life.
to watch them sing it!?
it's surreal.
i LOVE that about live music.
he didn't play wildflowers though….my most favorite….bummer.
but it was a great show.

and i liked being there with mr. duerksen.
he's my my real most favorite.

Lauryn - 1. Never allow a love (photography) to become a burden. It sucks the joy out of it, and there are so few things in life (other than family) that bring true joy. Take the time off and enjoy life. Photographing beautiful families will be there next season 🙂
2. Tom Petty is amazing. I saw him a few years back and was blown away by his sound. I loved his show. Seeing him live was awesome. Glad you enjoyed it 🙂

Sara - You were right that reading Katie’s blog will wreck you. I just read two posts and watched the About Katie video. I might just have to sit on my couch and cry for a few minutes. I have never seen such radiance and joy on such a beautiful face. What an extraordinary young woman, so obedient to the Lord. My heart is quickened and cut with conviction.
Thank you for creating a blog worth returning to over and over.

heather loschiavo - i had to read Seven twice because it hit me right where God has been talking to me for the past few years. and i love the way she writes, its like she’s just talking to you.

Jess - So exciting to hear what God is doing in your heart, Megan…even if you are not quite sure what to make of it yet. Keep sharing. And THANK YOU for taking our pictures. You are the best. I love the one you posted and can’t wait to see the rest.

ira lee - we just talked about being idolators in church. shopping, tv, gadgets, anything that takes our focus away from God is an idol!!!!! agreeing with what you said, its not that shopping, or having tv time is wrong, but if the need, addiction, desire to do or buy those things blurs your dedication to the lord, then that is putting those objects or activities above God, which is idolizing! he just laid it out there and it just really clicks!

Alicia @ La Famille - convicting post especially after i just spent a boatload of $$ at ikea this weekend. i struggle with the “how much is ok” and the “how often is ok” questions…it’s hard because i know me and i’m a person that loves to fluff her nest. that requires shopping…so ya. i’m afraid of both of those books. my friend is reading 7 and its got her all convicted…eek! wise decision with the photo break. you are smart to do that. happy monday, ms. meg 🙂

the whyte house - i took the year off from doing photos, too. granted i only have two and a less hectic schedule, but with my husband deploying…well, you really don’t have to give an explanation after saying that, right? 🙂 i like having less to plan around, too. leaves more room for random trips out of town and such.
i see jess every now and then after her bible study(my son is in pre-k at the church)and i tell myself i’m going to say hi to her and then chicken out. not that i really have any reason to say hi, but sometimes people appreciate it…i hope. 🙂

gayle - I am 69 and live a very blessed full life. I have everything I could desire but I don’t desire worldly goods any more. I wear what I have, I don’t follow trends, I give freely and I feel good! You are good and you will do what is right for you. I don’t think God wants us to deprive ourselves when we have worked hard to achieve money and success. It is a constant thought provoking issue. I am having a conflict now, it seems the more Christian people I know are always unhappy, frustrated and in a state on confusion. Can’t we all be more serene?

tammy kay - But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 2 Corinthians 12:9
I needed to read that this morning. Not sure if you did too.
I’m scared to read 7 too. 😉

amy jupin - this is an awesome post–starting with kisses from katie (which i haven’t been able to finish yet because i sob like a newborn baby and can’t get through some parts) and ending with that pic of jess and her adorable fam.
i get each and every part of this post.
i get it.
i am full to the tippy top with these same feelings.
maybe it’s our age…maybe it’s just the point of our lives where we start to realize just how big the world is and how tough parts of it are and how much we desperately want to make it better, and ourselves better in the process.
maybe it’s because we are over the me-me-me-me part of our lives.
and maybe it’s because we know we need to lean on His understanding and not our own.
idk.

i love that pic of pam and her family too.
i know you must miss her so much and want to be there in africa too.
did i tell you i worked with a guy that got married last year.
somehow we were talking about africa and he told me that his wife actually went to africa as part of her medical training–in sierra leone!
i just looked at all your pics again so i could spell it right and now i have big fat burning tears in my eyes.
anyway, i just wanted to say, after all this rambling, that i miss you and i understand.
all of it.
i wish, beyond wish really, i pray that one day soon we can sit down and have some coffee and talk.
for hours.
because i think it is exactly what we need.
🙂
xoxoxo.
(and let’s invite kimberlee and laura and chicago jen too!!)

erlfisher - We saw Tom Petty, too! Such a fun concert…and Wildflowers is my favorite as well! If I had known you were going to be there, I would have looked for you – HA!

Jennie - LOVE Katie’s book. She’s from Brentwood, where I live. Pretty amazing what God has done through her!!

Tracy Sheehy - Oh yes I have read both of those book and Seven will also wreck you and kick your tail at the same time!! 🙂

Cindy - I tear up just thinking about Kisses From Katie. I actually got it from the library earlier this year and mentioned it to a friend and she said, “Rats! I was thinking of giving that to you for your birthday.” My response…PLEASE! I can think of nothing I’d like more than my own copy so I can highlight it and write it it, respond to it, take notes in it! I was afraid that when I read it I’d feel so inadequate! How can I compare to giving up everything and moving to Africa? But it completely inspired me…to love like that…right here, right now, even in my own family. Selflessly. As for 7, I’m on the last chapter right now. Can hardly put it down. Another book I want to go through again. More slowly. Truly digest. Change.
As for family photos, so sad (yet happy for you) that you’re taking the year off. Would love to have you capture my family again. But ever so grateful for the photos we got last year!! They are still my favs!! Can’t wait to see all that you’ll do instead! 🙂

Karen F. - Reading 7 right now. Wrecking me. Awesome.
Kisses for Katie has caused me to pray big prayers for our family, especially our daughters. I want to be the kind of parent who says, “I hear God calling us to go to ________. We’re going.” I want to be the kind of parent who hears from her daughter, “God’s calling me to ___________.” and I say, “Let’s go. We’ll get you there.”
Less of me. More of Him. Every single day.

Heidi - FYI. Seven is going to rock your world. Be prepared. It’s good, all good, but be ready. 🙂

Lisa Currie-Gurney - Go for a long walk on your quiet road.
Take a deep breath or two.
Let Him sort through all that is in your head, and on your heart.
Know that you are prayed for friend.
Hugs From My Heart

Julie - Oh my gosh. I bought Kisses for Katie last night in my Kindel. A.MAZ.ING. So inspirational. She is amazing. Thank you for the recommendation. I’m off to tell everyone I know about it.

Su@TheIntentionalHome - I have both of those books on my bookshelf.
I LOVE Kisses From Kate because it is a reminder of what happens when we say yes to God.
It is another reminder that God does not put an age limit on when He starts using you. . or when you can hear His voice. . .or when He gives you a “call on your life” (I read the book aloud to my 3 older kids ages 14, 12, and 11.)
And it is another reminder that God can use ordinary people to do extraordinary Kingdom work. (YES!!! I wonder if that is the pull so many of us feel. . we were made for big, extraordinary work!! And when we are not in the midst of it, we feel unsatisfied).
And 7. . .love Jen Hatmaker. I love her blog post After the Airport. You gotta go to her blog and read After the Airport. . that blog post makes me cry (and laugh) everytime I read it.
Jen Hatmaker recently adopted a 5 year old and a 7 year old from Ethiopia. i too (9 months ago) adopted a 7 year old from Ethiopia.
Her post affirmed me and made me feel not alone. Her post also convicted me. I want to love like she describes in the last few paragraphs of this blog post.
You gotta go read After the Airport by Jen Hatmaker, because even if you have not adopted, we all have many realms of life that can be full of that initial euphoria followed by hard, hard work and times that call for dogged perseverance through many difficulties and challenges.
That post is what made me buy 7 and although I do not like the writing style of the book. . I love the heart. And it made me look around to see where I could live woth less so I could give more.
Oh, what a long comment. . .just got so excited about those 2 books you are reading. May God use them to speak to your heart.
My problem is I read those books and get all excited and moved and inspired and then it wears off and I am back to focusing on decorating my home. Ugh.
Oh, I am excited for you! God has big plans for the Duerksen family. Ya’ll 7 were put together for a reason.

Kelly - I found Katie’s blog awhile back… it wrings your heart out. I follow another blog about making knitting and crocheted squares called Knit A Square and I remember once reading about a little orphaned girl and her wish was just to have someone tuck her in bed at night… I think about almost every night when I tuck my kids in bed. I breaks my heart to think that probably millions of kids go to bed every night with just that one wish… so I’m crocheting squares and wondering what God is calling me to also… but you know, God’s timing is perfect and you will know at exactly the right time (just like me, I’m hoping 😉 what exactly that calling is about… for me, I know that it’s just not quite here yet… Just keep putting one foot in front of the other, Meg. You don’t have a messy heart, I read your blog and I see a very pure heart God-filled woman… I would say you’re just experiencing a calling…

Jacci - Ditto what Laura Phelps said.
I’m reading a book edited by CJ Mahaney called “Worldiness: Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World”. Here’s an excerpt on the chapter about things – “This may be confounding to you, but it was far easier being a Christian in the poverty of Uganda than in the affluence of the States. Prosperity tempts my laziness; it lulls me away from dependence on the Lord. The affluence draws me toward passivity. It’s a daily battle for dependence upon God versus dependence upon my own strength.”
One of my favorite things about the book is the last chapter, “How to Love the World”. Because it’s not wrong to praise God for our earthly blessings – that our children have food to eat and warm, dry beds. That we have children and a husband at all. That our land isn’t wracked by war. But, we *are* the rich in the world. Every last one of us reading this blog. And we are CALLED to share and to give generously. What does that look like? How do we do that – glorify God in all things, even dressing cute? Good read.
I’ll pray for you (and me) tonight. To not be lulled, but to be alert and vigilant… and generous.

Lorie - The Africa print is gorgeous! And good for you for making a decision for you and your family, even if it meant temporarily giving up something you love. I am sure when you go back to it next year you will be even more passionate about it!

Debby - Got to see Kate at BrookHills in Birmingham earlier this past year when we went to see Mindy. David Platt, the pastor did an interview kind of thing with her. And as she spoke, she would at times look lovingly down in the audience at a couple of her kids that she brought with her and she would wave her fingers at them. You could just see the love she had for them. So cute! And darn, Meg. Jill and I were talking about when the family would all be together for a family shoot. But I totally understand!! Life can be too hectic and we have to decide what is important. Another year, maybe when the little munchkin will be a little older. I LOVE the photo shot of the girls and it hangs in my livingroom. LOVE, LOVE!! I can’t believe we will have 4 granddaughters and 1 grandson. I’m not that old am I???

JD in KC - First – thank you! Thank you for keeping it real. You find a way in every post to make a connection and I so appreciate it! I read your post and want to DO something – read my Bible, take more pictures, call the people I love, hug my kids and husband or just sit on the porch and enjoy God’s creation. Thank you for inspiring and loving and living out loud!

Mama Zen - I would love to see Tom Petty!

tiffany gardner - once again…. i. love. your. blog. me too… to all of that. the last thing you said about pics… even me too. i have an 8, 6 year old and 15 month old. thinking of starting this photo season makes me uneasy. i’m questioning several things and want to know what God is wanting for my life. thanks for reminding me to keep searching. xoxo

Toni :O) - I LOVE that picture of the Macs…sooo adorable…that family just warms my heart to no end. I’m glad you made the decisions you have, your family will appreciate it I’m sure. You actually inspire me to want a simpler life…some days I hate working and hate having such a busy life…never know what the future holds but someday I hope to have that simpler life. Your heart is joyful, cause it bleeds colors onto this blog…we all get that and I know I feel blessed to read what you have to share. Keep smiling and sharing those bright colors!

Lori H - Oh my. Kisses from Katie rocked my world. My comfortable, safe, suburban world. Months later and I still hear her “voice” in my head. I haven’t read Seven and I am a little afraid to, honestly. Katie is amazing! How many high school girls would go down that path? I think about her, and I feel lazy and not-finding-my-purpose. I felt the same way, to some extent, after reading the fiction book, The Poisonwood Bible. One of the main characters has that same dissonance when she comes from living in Africa for years back to the U.S. I love your honest sharing, Meg. I wish I didn’t live so far from you (VA….Kansas).

Suzanne - Oh Meg, I know the messy heart feeling. I have had it for several weeks now. It is so disconcerting and frustrating. You are not alone, sister! I have heard of Katie’s book, but I haven’t read it yet. It is now on my list, along with Heaven is Here. Have a great weekend!

traci - I never comment but the firt part of your blog is the best thing you have written!!! I think about this OFTEN also! How easy for American Christians to go off to Africa for a short time and come back to their pretty life. I share those feelings so often!!

Tina Jacobsen - Oh Meg!! I read Kisses From Katie a few months ago and I don’t think I ever cried so much!! I follow her blog also and wow she is sooooo awesome!! I too have a constant battle of the wants of this world and what God wants of me! Yup..messy heart girl right here!! I want and need to read 7!!
Tina

Jill - Meg, don’t be scared of 7, you will LOVE it. I’ve known Jen for as long as I can remember and she sounds in the book just like she does in real life. It is a safe place…she shares her successes and her failures during each month – which makes her REAL. She shares in such a way that it will make you think and want to take the challenge right along with her, but without the fear of “what if I mess up and don’t do it right” – if you are taking the chance to change your way of thinking like she has done, it will take you amazing places…and you’ll laugh and cry (sometimes at the same time) along the way. Definitely an awesome read. I would also recommend her Interrupted and Ms. Understood. Actually, I’d recommend all of her books, but those are my faves. 🙂 And I LOVE Kisses from Katie…have been following her blog for a few years. I love that girl.

megan@contentedsparrow - reading katie with the kids right now.
and my head and heart are always a mess over the dichotomy over what i want to do and what i do (or don’t do).
joining you in really listening for His leading.
He’s always speaking.
may we have ears to hear
and hearts that trust and obey.

amy cornwell - I’ve followed Katie’s blog for a long time and read her book in January. It’s fantastic. A lot of her blog posts are in the book but it’s neat how they put it together. Definitely makes you think! I haven’t heard of Seven – let us know!

Katie - I am so glad for you, seeing from a distant that God is moving and working and guiding you. I love that you are saying no to one thing for a season and allowing God to doing something different for a season. God is good.
We are selling our house and moving out of state for my husband’s dream job – that is BIG! God is definitely moving…might run into you on the beaches in SW MI cause that is where we will be living!

Terrie G - I so get what you mean by a messy heart…I’m right there with you. I’ve been struggling with it for a little while now. God is slowly allowing me to clean up the mess…but I really wish I was back ‘home’ where I could worship with my girlfriends who ‘get’ me. I miss not having someone I trust to talk to.
Can’t wait to try the book! Been looking for something new to read.
All these pics with one lens…nice work!
It’s my favorite lens too. If you ever want to check out a lens, let me know. I have several different ones! Think I’m taking a photo workshop in ‘N’ town this summer!
And sometimes, you just need to take a break and do what’s right for you & your family.
Good for you! Enjoy whatever endeavor you do next! 🙂

Betsy - Both books… Incredible, prepare to be challenged! 7. Is soooo good!

Sarah @This Farm Family's Life - such a touching post! it’s awesome that you and pam stay in touch and that is so cool for her son! I too am considering taking a year off from taking pictures. It is just too much and I often feel like my family gets put on the back burner. In our little town there is a photographer who has been in business for 30+ years. His wife recently passed away from cancer. I often look to him for advice and he said that he and his wife regret not being present for a lot of things while there kids were little. I don’t want any regrets. Kudos to you for making that decision. I’m sure it’s a huge weight off you shoulders.

Trish - speaking of spending money on things we don’t need. i had told my 6 year old she could take her money and spend it on something she would like at Target. she has a real hard time saving. she just said, “no thanks mom… i shouldn’t be worried about stuff on the world. i should be worried about Heaven. besides i already have jesus!” wow… i have been thinking about that statement for the whole week!

sandi - i asked for her book for christmas… and read it quickly. our seven year old has *always* (you know for like, three years) wanted to be a pediatrician like her aunt brittney. after missions week at school in the fall she came home wanting to be a missionary ~ then she clarified that she would be a doctor who would spend her vacations traveling to other countries to help those in need. as i was reading the book i could so relate to the parents in giving their daughter the freedom to do something so extra-ordinary.

Rachel J - I’ve heard so many things about Kisses From Katie. Life changing things. I’m almost finished with 7, it’s good. Like really good. And I think you will love her candid, wittyness. 🙂
Happy Friday Megalicious! Haha!
Ps. I emailed you for your address, several moons ago. I would like to send you something. A happy package 🙂 Let me know girl!

twitter.com/takingheart - You have me weeping with just a click & looksee of Katie’s blog. Seriously? My day wasn’t supposed to go there… but God has a special way of jilting people like you, who in turn jilt people like me into another world of amazing grace… amazing. Grace.
Thank you. Oh my heart.

Jennifer@beautyinbloom - Oh Meg. Consider me wrecked. I clicked over to Katie’s blog and instantly teared up at her blog header. I am in trouble. Thank you for sharing. 🙂

MommyKnitsJen - Kisses from Katie was the first book I downloaded when I got my Kindle for Christmas. I sat in the debris that is post Christmas and cried at all we had and all that we took for granted. I really started thinking about what we NEEDED and what we just wanted. I think maybe I need to reread it I’ve been on a declutter and simplify rampage lately and I think I need to focus that energy.

happygirl - I booked marked Kate’s blog. I look forward to following her ministry. I have to say, I smiled a little when you said you were too busy to do family portraits. I am CONSTANTLY amazed at how much you do. When do you sleep?

Laura Phelps - This is my CONSTANT pull
and I do mean CONSTANT
want vs need
empty vs full
and really, what is my purpose?
what does God want me to do?
How does He want me to use my talents?
Am I missing something?
how I spend my time and my money has been a HUGE part of what has been on my mind in the last year
it has been a huge test
a test of will…not MY will..but HIS will
a test of self control
discipline
being the person I am created to be
learning not to act on my FEELINGS
doing the right thing
and you are right!
we don’t take ANY THING with us when we die
I remind myself daily to stop worrying about my OUTER APPEARANCE…and focus on the INNER…
MY SOUL
I too want to look cute
I love things
clothes
lattes
iphones
furniture
magazines
but what I want MORE is a clean soul
Oh Meg…you are not in this struggle alone
keep on praying and asking God what you should do
He has all the answers to our BIG questions
then pack your bags and go to Africa…:-)

Lindsey - I found Katie’s blog last week. After reading it and learning her story, I just felt that so much of my life and problems are petty compared to what some people suffer on this earth. Her story is amazing and inspiring. She is my spiritual role-model! What a servant of the Lord! I, too, deeeeeeeply want to go to Africa. It has been in my heart for several years now.

Brianna - I read 7. It’s awesome. And instead of doing everything for a month at a time, I did a version of it doing a week at a time. AND my good friend is visiting Katie from Kisses from Katie RIGHT NOW in Africa. Crazy timing!
Thanks for your thoughts and reminders. You’re great!

Kelly - God is stirring in you! Exciting! Thanks for sharing your journey with us! We can learn so much from each other. It is so good to see into other’s thoughts sometimes. I think it helps us process ours. I have both of those books on my reading list. I’m scared to read both I will admit.
You picked a great family for your one shoot and good for you for picking priorities in how to spend time. It is HARD but one of the biggest ways God can work in us I think. Blessings on you!! Kelly

Dani - I am taking my son to the book store tonight for his b-day. I think I’ll take a look at this book.
Your heart is amazing. God works through you. I am touched each time you write because I see Him. You are an amazing mother, friend, blogger, etc.

Jen - I’m super bummed that I won’t get to see your cute pictures this year but being a photographer myself I completely understand how increadibly time consuming it is. I constantly feel like my passion and my priorities are playing tug of war. Laundry or editing? Uno with the kids or editing? Calling in sick to work to finish editing…Ugh.

seriously sassy mama - For awhile now I have really strived to live a simple life. I am going to add this book to my reading list.

colleen from alabama - I looked at this book today at our church bookstore. I want to read it to my kids this summer. My 12 yr old daughter, who usually rolls her eyes at most of my ideas, said she thought that book would be reaaallly good. Don’t know how my 9 yr old boy will feel. Sometimes i just have to be the mom because they need it! I am praying this book will bring the reality that i know into my children’s hearts. We live in a society that has fed us all the lie that more is always better. Thanks for choosing not to believe the lie. I choose with you. Even when it is painful or seemingly weird. We are living right side up in an upside down world!

Wendi - MY thoughts when reading this…1) I get the debate between having nice things or using $ to help others, but someone like Katie always convinces me to give. 2) YOU don’t need stuff to be cute 🙂 3)God gives us more blessings than we can buy 4) It is so exciting for me to read about what is stirring in your heart and I am looking forward to see what he does.

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - Hugs to you. You are precious. And I think your heart isn’t messy. In fact, it is quite beautiful to me.

Kristin - Meg, my daughter is reading Kisses for Katie. She’s a HS Sophomore. She texted me from school, crying. She was definitely convicted! We found her blog and after one read of her beautiful thoughts, it’s changed my ways of working, thinking, BEING.
Crap just doesn’t matter.
You don’t know me.
I feel like i know you.
I’ve been reading you for a while.
Hang in there!!!!

phil.

IMG_8663-2
while i was on a run on sunday afternoon my girls found a turtle in our yard!

they named him Phil.

IMG_8667-3
sean, talby and annie came up with a great plan to keep it in the area that we think is a trough for horses?
but honestly….what do we know?
i have seen Charolette's Web…the original….and that is about the extent of my knowledge of farm life.

but the trough had probably a year or two of leaves in it and the week of rain made it a perfect turtle world!
it's very wet and muddy.

IMG_8676-4
turtles are amazing little creatures.
so much detail on their entire body.

IMG_8688-6
just look at that face!
he is an art project waiting to be made!
the lines and the colors….oh i love turtles.

sidenote:  one time when i was annie's age i had a box turtle i found and i went to the pool and asked my dad to watch my turtle in the laundry room while i was gone.  when i got home he told me it had escaped.
i believed him until just recently when i remembered that story and relaized i had been tricked.  turtles can't escape a laundry room!!  REAL nice dad!

IMG_8691-7
why would God put orange on the bottom of turtle shell?
it's so interesting!
there is probably some reason…..there always is.

IMG_8683-5

then on monday i found another turtle in the middle of the road.
i pulled over and jumped out and put it in a big pot i had in the trunk, took it home and put it in with phil.
🙂
they can be buddies.

this photo is called Ode to Spring.   or maybe it should be called Ode to Allergies.     HA HA HAAAA.
IMG_8694-1

craig mowed the yard on saturday.
it took all the time it takes to play all the avett brothers songs we have.
ha!

and last night i laid in bed at midnight with the windows open and i heard four things.
1. craig breathing
2. frogs
3. cows….or should i say COW…just one…MOOOOOO.  pause.   MOOOOO.  pause.   MOOOOOO…  repeat.
4. owls

i like this place.

my running….
i am at 86 miles.
i have 4 days left.
totally going to make it!!
a w e s o m e.
i would have LAUGHED IN YOUR FACE if you had told me last year i would be running 6 miles in march.
but i did it on sunday by myself with no one to make me finish but myself.
and Lance Armstrong came over my Nike+ thing on my iPod congratulating me.
i know it's just a recording but still it feels pretty sweet.

DOMA - Ohhh! Such a beautiful photos! I absolutely love it! You’re kids are adorable.
I found your blog today but I’m sure that I’ll stay here longer 😉

Diane - My two bits regarding your turtle. Make sure your children wash their hands with warm water and soap after holding him. Turtles can carry salmonella.

bri epp - you should free the turtle because 1.) i believe in KS it is illegal to snag wild turtles and keep them as pets, but mostly 2.) it is what is best for the turtle.

Fat Cowboy - Free Yertle!!!

Faith - Dear Meg. HAVE YOU SEEN THIS??? https://www.facebook.com/thecolorrun
The Color Run. Like your super fun color throwing photo shoot except while you run! Immediately thought of you when I saw it.

tina - When you write a blog, it’s out there for all to see. I think ‘hater’s’ is the wrong term. No one is hating on Meg! We love meg and that’s why we come here and comment. Nature and the eco-system is a touchy subject, especially in the past 10-20 years. We know more now, so we are aware of the effects on the environment. Animals are truly the most innocent creature’s on “God’s” green earth….so i can see how many people perk up there chests when something so innocent like this happens.
With all do respect to Mandy friend…it’s not just two turtles…because if 1000 reader’s view this blog and half of them would like to try the same thing…then that’s 1000 turtles which have been displaced and so on and so on.
No hater’s meg…just animal lovers 🙂 Your blog is awesome!

mandy friend - i’d have let my kids keep the turtles for a while too. sheesh. it’s a couple turtles for pete’s sakes! the kids memories of hanging with turtles for a few days far tops the ‘let the turtles go’ cries;) tons of turtles get hit by cars out at my mil’s place. you saved it…right?!:D
you’re awesomefor running. i always say i’ll run when someones chasing me with a gun;)

Sandy W - If you are going to keep the turtles just please make sure you give them a container of water large enough for them to get in and a way to get in and out. They do need water to survive.

Lindsey Jo - i had tons of turtles as pets as a kid. but mine were box turtles, unlike phil 🙂 if and when you let them go, you should write your phone number on their shell. it’s fun to see how far the turtle gets before someone else “holds it in captivity” 🙂

sue - Laura….Thank you.

Laura - I have to add my voice to the other “let the turtle go” people for a couple of reasons.
First, you may be breaking the law. You need to research the laws in your state in regard to keeping turtles as pets, as they can be quite strict. Certain turtles are endangered in number, so the laws are very restrictive. By the size of Phil, he is of breeding age, so you more than likely interrupted his attempt to locate his water source of choice so he could get his turtle groove on with the ladies.
Second, many turtles do not thrive in captivity. Their little constitutions don’t do well with a lot of human interaction/interference, so he may decline in health, thus removing another turtle of breeding age from the ecological system.
So, cool as he is, the right thing to do would be to let him go. If you want your kids to have more hands-on experience with turtles, locate a breeder in your area that specializes in turtles as pets. They don’t allow adoption of wild turtles and exclusively work with domestic pets.

Julie - I think you need to paint Phil’s shell! He would be the coooooolest turtle eva!

Meaghan - One hundred miles? Holy moly…. You are one amazing person. I can’t get over it, 100 MILES?!!!?

Maggie T. - Pi love the turtle! Such amazing detail, what an amazing God! Thanks for sharing….

Michelle B - Turtles are so cool! My neighbor used to have a turtle pond at her house and we would spend a lot of time there playing with them!
So when do we get a house tour of the new place ? 🙂

holly S - oh my there are a lot of haters on this post. I love your blog and all your pictures. You have a beautiful family and are a very inspiring person! Thanks for sharing your wonderful life with us on your blog.

cath w - Amazing. Someone voices an opinion that may not be the same as that of the blogger, and they are labelled a ‘hater’. It says ‘Post a comment’ not ‘Post a compliment’.

Christina - Congrats on your running!!
And your thoughts/comments on the turtle were awesome…I have lost my ability to wonder (as in, be in awe) at creation. Thank you!

Kathy P - you shouldnt move the turtle, you should put it back where you found it in your yard, or it wont survive. they are actually fairly fragile creatures.
the orange on its stomach is to ward off creatures if it rolls over on its back

sue - meg gave me and others the impression that she was going to keep the turtles. She never said it was just for the over night or till the morning and i think if she had made that clear we would not be discussing this the way we are. Having a blog is alot of responsibility and i don’t think she made it clear on what she was going to do with it. we are not haters but just like wild life to roam free.

Winnie - I’m sorry I didn’t read so much but the photos captivated me!!! You are a great photographer and the story is beautiful.

Tracey Garcia - Oh good gravy! I read through all the responses the the “save the turtle” folks seem a little over the top. ya’ll found two turtles, put them in a big trough, and are observing them. It’s not like you threw them in a pot to make soup! I have every confidence folks that Meg does not intend to make these forever pets. The turtles are not being tortured or mistreated and the kids are learning about them and nature. Yes, it is important for kids to learn about animals and their natural habitat. Yes, wild animals are wild and not pets. But the kids ARE learning and being respectful of the animals. They’ve kept them outside in a turtle friendly environment. Relax for goodness sake.
And Meg, I think your 100 mi is AWESOME!!!! Big congrats. Maybe I’ll try to walk a 100 mi in April (I only run if I’m being chased—-which I may be my the turtle folks after I post this comment)

Ashley - Love Ode to Allergies! I laughed.
As for Phil, isn’t it amazing how God creates us each so intricately?! I’m glad the kiddos are getting to see nature up close and personally. Country life is so interesting.
And BIG congrats on your running goal! I can walk or bike anywhere, but running is a feat. Kudos!

Jolene (Homespun Heritage) - HA! That is so cool!
We have a tortoise called Bubba. He’s pretty awesome!

Tracy Fisher - Congrats on your run! You go girl!!! I love your turtle(s) but can’t show my kids. We went to get 2 the other day at the stinky pet store. I kind of freaked out. Their legs had stripes on them and they looked like snakes. And I am absolutely terrified of snake. Left home without turtles and two unhappy kids. Oh well. LIfe goes on. Tracy

lisa k - Over the past year of reading your blog, you have inspired me to do many things. This past month I have decided to join you in running 100 miles in march, I think it is such a great personal goal that you cant cheat yourself out of, and I’ve been looking forward to going on jogs everyday now 🙂
Im at 82 miles, and congrats to you 86!
Thank you thank you for your inspiring, down to earth blog 🙂

Terri - Meg,
I read in your last post that your family went to the movies the other day. My husband and I did too. We went to see October Baby. I can’t tell you how good it is! It tells a story that sooooo needs to be heard! I am taking my daughters to see it tomorrow (they are on spring break). They are 19 and 14. It is necessary that they see it. Let me know what you think of it after you go. You won’t regret it.
Terri

holly - OK, so it seems like there are a lot of hater this morning….anyways, it is a water turtle. Phil has webbed feet. Land turtles are really dry and scaly.I had one when i was a teacher. not only did I take it out of it’s natural habitat, but I took him to school, kept him in an aquarium. He lived several years and got very big. Finally I had to let him go, so I did. Sorry haters.
congrats on the running! You will meet your goal!

Reese - Hey there- Love farm life and glad you heard the cow and the owl while relaxing in bed – nothing better than that! I am going to repeat what has already been said. You should let the turtles go. Totally not cool to keep them captive when they should be free and wild. You’re doing your children a disservice by letting them keep them and think that it’s OK. Maybe as an overnight but not as a pet. Hope that doesn’t offend you – that isn’t my intention!
Love your blog!

Georgia - So cute!

Valerie @ Chateau A La Mode - Hmmmm, turtles??!?!…not really a fan but the girls look like they’re enjoying Phil and his buddy so when it comes to being a mama that’s what counts 😉 Congrats on your running accomplishment. Way to go MEG!!

Jacci - One more thought… judging from the photos, it’s hard to tell whether or not Phil is getting any sunshine. Because Phil is cold-blooded, he needs to be able to keep his temp regulated by moving in and out of sun. So, he needs both shady spots and sunny spots. The end 🙂

ktmade - Delightful! I had a little turtle when I was a kid that looked almost exactly like Phil but with a yellow belly. His name was Frankie D. He was with us for many, many years.

Jacci in Ohio - Okay… First of all, I really enjoyed this post! The pictures are lovely and
Phil is a looker 🙂 Now… About the wild turtles. It’s true, your turtles may be trying to mate or lay eggs right now. BUT it is most definitely NOT true that your turtles might need to “take care of babies” or “teach other turtles to swim.” God has made turtles to lay eggs and never look back. They do not care for their young like birds or mammals do. So no baby turtles are in distress because of your actions 🙂 Don’t you feel better already? 🙂 decades ago, when children were far more in tune with the creation around them, it was not at all uncommon for classrooms to teach “nature study” in the early school years instead of science. Nature study is hands on, focusing on close observation, and natural habitat. We approach science this way in our homeschool. We often observe creatures for an hour or two before letting them go exactly where we found them. Children that learn to care about turtles the way yours do are going to be far more likely to truly understand wildlife issues as adults than those that merely saw turtles behind glass and filled out some worksheet about their habitat needs.
Maybe this should’ve been an email 🙂 the only other things I’d mention are that Kansas may have laws concerning whether or not you’re even allowed to keep Phil and for how long. Here in Ohio, if we keep a wild caught turtle for longer than 4 days, it’s illegal to return it to the wild afterward. And the salmonella concerns are legit, but washing hands well is enough 🙂

Sarah Wolfe - Way to go on the running. That’s a really big deal… I need a running partner and more hours in the day… sigh! But that’s all just excuses. I just need to do it!

Kelly - So, does this mean you are starting your own turtle farm now?! 🙂

Tina I - Congrats on your running progress! What an accomplishment! I’m a long time runner myself…never speedy, just consistent, but can say that without a doubt, running has saved my life on more than one occasion. I wouldn’t be the person I am without it. Sometimes its hard, sometimes it hurts, but I never regret having gone. Hope you keep going!

happygirl - We had a turtle named Cynthia for FOUR years. Turtles are horrible pets. Don’t bring this one in the house. They poop A LOT. just sayin’. Awesome running. I am so impressed.

Allison - I lived in the country growing up so I know all about catching turtles. I caught a turtle and named it Sally, but my Dad made me put it back in the stream. I found another one a couple weeks later in the yard and so I decided to call it Sally 2. Very original for an 8 year old 🙂
Congrats on all the running. Someday I’ll make it there.

sue - You know your going to get alot of mail on this but please put the turtle back where it belongs. I know you have good intentions but that turtle has to teach other turtles how to swim. You know its the right thing to do .

megan - You should sell your photos. I’d buy an Ode to Allergies!

karen - very cute turtle. i would let the turtles go. your kids are lucky enough to have hundreds of wild ‘pets’ in the country. FREE THE TURTLES!!! lol!

Karen Gerstenberger - Your Ode To Spring photo is lovely – it deserves to be framed.
I have wondered the same thing about the inside of a clamshell that you wondered about the bottom of Phil’s shell: why would God make something so beautiful where so few would see it? I don’t know the answer, but those shells encourage me to believe that God cares about every detail, and loves and creates beauty for the sake of pure joy. Such extravagent love! God bless you, Meg.

Jen Brandt - Going to hit your running goal – YEA FOR YOU!!! That is awesome. Love Phil. Yes, he does have beautiful colors!

Mandy - Oh my goodness. I LOVED this post, it totally made me smile! I am a country girl who grew up on a big farm. Us kids always played with turtles and we never got sick. Also judging by the fact that I still see turtles out everywhere, it would appear that they didnt go extinct as a result of living on my porch for a week or two. Life is an adventure and I’m so happy that your children are getting to experiance the country!

Terrie G - I’m having a hard time reading your posts…they all make me cry.
I miss living on the farm….so many memories of our kids growing up.
And the sounds..I miss those the most at night.
we went to the farm to clean up last week and I took a good look around the place…
with my camera. It was probably one of the last times I’ll go there…so I reminisced…and cried.
A lot.
Happy Wednesday!
PS – You’ve inspired me to start walking…not up to running yet. 🙂

erin - phil is awesome!
and i hate to be one of THOSE people, but turtles can carry a TON of germs, including salmonella. i’d have a hard time denying my little one the chance to hold/touch one, but i’d also be inclined to scrub her hands down to nothing afterwards. just be careful! 🙂

Kate S. - You’ve openly admitted you know little about farm or wildlife, so why are you attempting to keep turtles as pets? They’re wild animals and you’ve unwittingly trapped them and are forcing them to live their lives in captivity.
I’m reminded of this quote: “God loved the birds and invented trees. Man loved the birds and invented cages.” –Jacques Deval.
Please let the turtles go. Your children can learn about turles elsewhere.

GB Jost - Never mind Meg, I found it! Sorry! GB

jeana - The turtle is gorgeous! God is amazingly creative, and just to imagine none are exactly the same?! Wow. Congrats on the running. I hate running, it always seems so miserable.. maybe I’m missing something?

GB Jost - Hey Meg, I would love to sign up for the $100.00 Starbucks give-a-way, but the link takes me to another blog entry! Love seeing Scott play basketball…GB

Rebecca - When you look at Phil’s most perfect design, isn’t it hard to believe someone wouldn’t believe in God?

farmhousemama - My kids found a painted turtle last weekend. We let them keep it overnight so that it could go to school for show and tell. Then we let it go back into the creek so that she (you can tell by the tail) could be free and happy… and lay eggs if she needed. 🙂 I agree with MaryMargaret. Wild animals are not meant to be pets. Glad your family is enjoying country life though!

Susan - Turtles have been on the move in our neighborhood lately…we have tons of creeks winding around our neighborhood…a couple of times I have seen one crossing the road and wanted to stop and get it for our back yard. I have two cats and worried about how that would work out. In my case the turtles are probably better off in the street!

Han - Go you with the running! Well done awesome lady!!
Our friend had a turtle called George – he regularly escaped under the fence into our garden – it was like having a pet without the responsibility lol. We’d pick him up and post him back under the fence or pick him up and take him for a walk round to next doors house lol.

Jana - Also, in our area (central Illinois) tiny painted turtles make a pilgrimage to our neighbors pond and it is a pretty remarkable feat! I am sure your children would enjoy that as well! Mine always did!

Jana - I think that is a painted water turtle and I believe that MaryMargaret is right! You unintentionally stopped the turtle from it’s natural instinct to mate or have babies! Please place the turtle back where you found it…..and let it go make more turtles 😉

Jenn - Yay for you on being so close to your goal! That’s awesome! And a BIG thank you, too! You have inspired me. I have three children and back in January lost a baby at almost 18 weeks. It was crushing. I’d lost two other babies, but much earlier in the pregnancy…because of that and the constant nausea, I hadn’t exercised in a several months…and I was packing on the pounds…and it wasn’t very pretty. And you have inspired and encouraged me to start running. I am only up to a mile and a half five days a week, but wow! I’m not dying at the end! And I’m doing it! And the weight is beginning to come off! And I feel so much better! And I never would’ve done it had you not been sharing about running. Thank you!!! Thank you!!!

deborah@applesinwonderland - @MaryMargaret, my little conservationist son (11) would love you. 🙂 There really is so much more to learn and appreciate from animals when they can be observed where and how they live naturally. Turtles are super cool. Your running has me thinking about running….it’s something. 😉

beth - That is a huge turtle! And the fact that you had a large pot in your trunk really cracked me up. I’m so glad you’re enjoying farm/country living! So, what’s next? Your own chickens? A little goat maybe?

Seriously Sassy Mama - I run in the burbs. Not like the country, but the sunsets are still pretty.

MaryMargaret - I know that I’m going to get some flack from this, but please, please put the turtles back into their natural habitat. You may have good intentions, but taking a turtle off of the road may be taking a mother from her nest. Wildlife is called “wild” for a reason, please don’t upset the ecosystem. If you explain that to your children, they’ll learn to respect that now and later in life. Sorry for sounding so preachy in the morning, but I’m a country girl that believes in nature.

Leah B. - I am pretty sure Phil is a water turtle. Probably why he has orange on his belly. Congrats on being so close to your goal on running.
