rainbow rearranged

i just love pictures!
i put this together of all my instagram pics from 2015 and just smile so big as it plays.

SUPERskinnysideways
over the break i had to do something with poor annie’s room.
i knew she would be bringing more in at christmas and there was just no room.
she had SO many clothes that she was just living out of laundry baskets, never could find what she needed and everything was always wrinkled.
i say “she has so many clothes” meaning – summer clothes still out, last years clothes she’d outgrown, and all the clothes talby passed onto her that didn’t quite fit yet.
all in one space that is meant to hold about 1/3 of what it was holding.
i sat with her pretty much all day long and we organized.
we piled everything into groups – ALL pants… ALL shorts… long sleeve… short sleeve… etc.
she tried on so many things that day.
in the end she had one bag to donate, one that was for next year and three bags she’d outgrown!
suddenly she had gained all her floor space back in her room!
when we were finally organized i asked if she would like to rearrange her room since we had the time and it was so clean?
YES!
(i should’ve gotten out my real camera & taken these pics because they are grainy with my phone… but i didn’t)
IMG_0156
when we had her furniture the way she liked i recalled i had several things for her walls that i’d forgotten about!
seriously… my brain!
i found the giraffe from a shop called Makewells.
the frame is from target as well as the floral comforter.
her name pillow is from ChrissieGraceDesigns… special from a fundraiser way back when.  🙂

IMG_0159IMG_0152IMG_0162-2
her curtains were made from fabric at hobby lobby and i “lined” them with a flat sheet from walmart.

IMG_0189
she has more prints she’d like to hang on this wall yet but we need to get some colorful frames first.
the bunting up top was a gift from Joy’s Hope and the arrows came from AidiesHideaway.
and that is the 11×14 sized canvas in my shop.
it’s 25% off this week!! Use the code 25OFFPHIL48 at checkout.

IMG_0183
IMG_0181
i found these shadow box type frames at TJMaxx this summer.
i found two at one store and a week later found two a another store… it was meant to be… right?
they are so darn cute and THE perfect shade of turquoise!
i hung scripture cards from TheLovelyWords on the clips.
it looks like her shop doesn’t have any right now but i saw these cute ones too when i searched etsy.  🙂

IMG_0180
all of her furniture is second hand… that’s just how we roll.
add a coat of paint and it’s like new.
it’s pretty much that way in our whole house actually…

IMG_0165IMG_0166IMG_0190
and just in case you wondered how it looked before… here is the link to when we surprised her with a room makeover in 2014!
complete with paint colors, a young Stanley and a little video.

meg duerksen - Karen click the link at the end of this post to the original post about her room.

Karen - Hi– did you ever post the colors for this room? My daughter loves it and we’d love to do this exact rainbow in her room. Thanks so much!

meg duerksen - julie i wish i had some tips but i am the world’s laziest painter. 🙂 i spray paint when i can which is what i did for annie’s bed and bedside table because the colors were so bright. the dresser was semi gloss trim paint. some times i sand and prime… sometimes i don’t. just depends on the project.

Amy Lynne - Your flipbook was so much fun! What a great idea!

Kirsten - So happy!! I love it. I went to Target today and spied some awesome curtains. Brought them home, hung them up and then thought, hmmm, I’ve seen these before. And then it dawned on me. They are nearly identical to A’s new ones! I’m feeling so validated in my life choices now. 🙂 🙂

Stacy - My middle daughter and Annie must be kindred spirits! She wanted orange and pink in her room…we compromised and she has a seriously gorgeous sunrise orange ceiling and light gray walls. The pinks are on her bed and she is so happy. Now that I’m seeing those cute shadow boxes with the clips, I think I may have to do a DIY for that same daughter’s room. Thanks for sharing!

Julie - Just curious, what is your process for painting furniture? Thanks 🎨😊

cyndilohoo - That video made me smile! Beautiful way to look back at the year.

Gevay - Happy New Year, Meg! I loved your Flipagram! The colorful pics speak joy.

Whitni - Her whole room is so happy! I seriously wish I could hire you as my interior decorator. I love your use of color!

Krista - Beautiful video! Brought tears to my eyes and you picked the most perfect song to go with the photos.

amy jupin - it’s so bright and cheery and FUN.
you are so good at decorating with that in mind.
you know me…colorphobic!
also that video is RAD!!!!

our christmas

so i wanted to start the new year blog posts with something thoughtful and inspiring.
but…
all my kids are home.
and i have had MAYBE four hours of alone time in the last 15 days.
so there is nothing in my brain to share that is thoughtful or inspiring.
blank.
i’m hoping for some goal setting & inspiration starting on tuesday morning.

IMG_0016
i kept my christmas decor much less than previous years.
a little but not overkill.

IMG_0024IMG_0040IMG_0211
my Lindsay Letters canvas is my new favorite piece!

IMG_0215
talby and annie worked together and made their first cheesecake for their gift to craig for christmas.
he said it was the best gift he’s ever gotten.
🙂
Pam’s  Cheesecake is SO CRAZY GOOD!

every christmas eve we have the tradition (like many others) of new pajamas.
i try to set them out before we leave for church and then everyone gets comfy when we get back.
this year they got slippers too.
AND craig i got his first pair of pj pants and slippers too!
he finally gets what all the hype is about!
ha ha ha
but they was our first year to attempt matching jammies for the girls since all 3 can wear women’s sizes now.
whaaaaat?

IMG_0241IMG_0236
back to talking about church though… christmas eve church is such a beautiful thing!
i ALWAYS need it.
every year.
no matter how “together” i think i have it because usually i am exhausted & barely holding it together by christmas eve.
i am always caught up in the gifts and the busy-ness even though i fight it like crazy.
and i admit almost every year i convince myself that i don’t need to go… i’m too busy… i have too much to do.
but we go and once again christmas eve church service brings it all back into perspective.
jesus is why we are doing all this celebrating.
my heart is filled.
we watched all our holiday movies that we love… Elf, Home Alone, Christmas Vacation and It’s a Wonderful Life over the week leading up to christmas. That is one of my favorite traditions.
i love movies.
(sidenote: recently i was having a conversation about a movie i went to and the person said “i don’t really believe in going to movies”.  i was speechless.  it wasn’t a religious thing… just they don’t like movies.  i had no words.  because I. LOVE. MOVIES!)

christmas morning.
we started with breakfast that craig made… bubble loaf and egg casserole.
and a BIG coffee with a candy cane and whipped cream for me.

last year i shared their stockings after christmas but i forgot to take those pics this year.
but here is a run down of some things:
GIRLS – coconut shampoo, toothbrush, make-up brushes, notebook, face wash, coffee, bath poof, mascara, eye brow pencil, chapstick, undies, socks, hair chalk, shower speaker, frappacino and Ramen

BOYS: socks, ski mask, socks, notebook, an air pump, nose shaped pencil sharpener, shower speaker, hostess cupcake, underwear, Nutella, gatorade gum and Ramen.
IMG_0274IMG_0289
instead of legos and dolls… they ask for shoes, a bean bag, a bike and a 10 piece pots& pans set.
🙂

IMG_0293IMG_0294IMG_0410annie picked this mug for me.  (heart eyes!)

now that the kids are older they also pick their own gifts for their siblings.
i really really like to see them pick things out, wrap them up and then see how proud they are to give their gifts.
i think that is my new favorite part of christmas morning.

Stephanie Wilson - Movies are my FAVORITE. I have a 20 movie to do list just from all the best of 2015 articles I can’t stop reading! I love your pictures, they always make me happy. And your beautiful nails are shaming me into doing mine.

Emily - Meg…so glad to see you are blogging more lately. You add a smile to my day!

jennibell - I enjoy reading your blog so much because we seem to be in the same stage of life. I loved your comment about allowing the kids to pick each other’s gifts. This is the first year that ours really did that and did it on their own and with their own money. I was so pleased to see how they just “get” one another. They picked out some really great gifts for one another.
thank you for sharing your Christmas! I will be checking in with you and following along throughout 2016. Happy new year!

amy jupin - sure wish you would have posted your decorating pics earlier so i could steal all the ideas!
btw, the stocking ideas were PERFECT this year.
and cheesecake as a gift? BRilLAnT!

Sabrina - Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Thanks for sharing your lovely pictures and traditions. I love movies too, especially going to the movies. I have several friends who say things like, “I just don’t get the whole going to the movies thing”. WHAT?!!! It’s shocking to hear that. We don’t get out to movies as much as we like because our kids are so little, so it’s a really big deal when we do get out to one. Otherwise we watch movies almost every night.

Michele - Sounds like you had a lovely Christmas. My favorite part of Christmas this year is also watching my kids excitement in giving to their siblings. So sweet!

Amy - Aww…thanks for sharing your Christmas! It looks like so much fun! I felt the same way about going to church on Christmas Eve. I’m so glad we went, though. I always love it! Best to you and your sweet family in 2016!

what we are up to…

IMG_9790
i got these huge barn doors a few weeks ago.
i finally had time to start cleaning them up to bring them inside my house!
i scrubbed for several hours with hot, HOT water and bleach and by the end i was soaked!
but they look great!
i had craig & sean bring them in annnnnnnd there were some problems  with an outlet so for now they are back in the garage until we can figure out how to solve the issue.  BUMMER!
but it WILL be solved.
for sure.

basketball has started!
my favorite season all year!!!
even if we end up with games on monday, tuesday, thursday, friday and all weekend long.
oy veh!
sean is playing too but i guess i haven’t gotten a picture of him just yet.
he actually plays the most… JV game and then the freshman game and then sits on the varsity bench.
his tuesdays and fridays and long!
but until january we are on break from basketball and i am happy to have that break.
🙂
IMG_9874IMG_9655
my girlfriends and i got together for the Jingle Bell Run again this year.
we walked it.
🙂
but it still counts.

IMG_9650
my favorite part of the race day tradition is the afternoon at the spa!
IMG_9656IMG_9678
IMG_9663craig took me to see Garth Brooks!!!
he isn’t a big fan but knew a lot of the songs.
i was IN HEAVEN!
i knew every word to every song.
the entire arena did too!
it was SO MUCH FUN!
and i think craig enjoyed it too – if for no other reason than laughing at me singing at the top of my lungs for 2.5 hours.

IMG_9635
oh waffle.
he needs another bath already.

IMG_0095
i took annie to do her christmas shopping and some one-on-one time.
she had been talking about trying to get her ears pierced again occasionally over the last month.
so we went to claire’s to christmas shop and i suggested trying it that day.
oh boy.
it was an ordeal.
she had a million questions for the sweet girl working the front of the store.
talby called me as she was trying to decide and gave annie a pep talk.
her face was still white as a ghost as she said “ok… let’s do it”
but then that sweet girl working figured out that only one of her holes had grown closed and she was able to get it open again without using the gun!  annie was SO RELIEVED!
we finishend our shopping in the mall and headed to starbucks.
and i had the best peppermint latte i have ever had!
what a great day!
IMG_0099IMG_0106IMG_0068
lauren moved to a different apartment so before her utilities were turned on her geckos needed a warm house to sleep in.
yay.
ha ha ha.
how creepy could they look?!
such weirdos.
IMG_9918
annie had friends over & i dumped out a box of ALLLL the left over christmas crafts and said “have fun!”
they definitely did.

IMG_9984
and this…. i mean how adorable is this?!
scott was making his girlfriend a special bracelet.
he did a great job.
phone2
i thought all these pictures were so funny and random….. these 18 pictures are all pics that i have texted people the past week or so.
HA HA HA
all different reasons… but almost always for a laugh. phoneIMG_9373
the kids put up the tree again this year and completely decorated it.
i have no problems handing that job over.
none at all.

IMG_9434 2IMG_9703
a friend sent me these cookies from Reina Cookies.
OH MY WORD!!
seriously you guys… the oatmeal raisin was the best cookie of my life.
i am not exaggerating.
what a GREAT gift!  If you are looking for a sweet idea… this is it!
i felt so loved.

renee - they put up the tree. omg. i am in heaven dreaming about 12 years from now when that will be me. don’t get me wrong – i love my littles but teens are my jam (used to teach high school). i hear it’s all kinds of different stress and problems – everything is bigger than poop at that age. but them doing the christmas tree …. that sounds amazing.

Annette - Where did you get your tree… it looks so real! I always want a real tree but not the mess. I’ve been looking for a fake tree that looks real…they are hard to find! Thanks! Annette

Jenn B - I always love your posts and your photos! It’s fun to see what is going on in your life. You always have interesting this to share. Seems like you all have had a wonderful end to your year. Praise God!

Donna - I love your tree. It looks just like mine; not all styled or themed but full of special ornaments from the past 20 years.

laura oyler - I have been looking for shoes like those wedge booties with the laces…where did you find those??

jen - I think one of my favorite things about my kids getting older is not having to decorate for Christmas because they do it all. Never ever thought I’d feel that way but boy do I ever!!
Merry Christmas to you!

Rebecca Torzewski - Oh my gosh, I saw that XL wine glass at Kohl’s and almost got it as a gag gift, and I love that picture of the older couple, so sweet. Talby IS definitely your mini-you! She is really growing up, all your kids are. Tell Annie I know how she feels with the pierced ears not working out, I decided to get mine double pierced for fun (I’m a lot older though, LOL), and the holes wouldn’t take no matter how much I cleaned them and had to end up taking the earrings out, it was an awful experience, not like I remember when I was 8 or 9 with my first ones. Have a wonderful holiday season. Thanks for 2015 full of great blogs :), really enjoy them.

Lisa Risse - Hi Meg!
I so enjoy your blog! My 3 kids are your kiddos’ age and we live very similar lives!
I so hope to meet you in person someday – as my sister and I are on your wait list for craft weekend!…..MAYBE this year! 🙂

I saw the pic of your son making a bracelet for his girlfriend – so sweet! Can you give me a good tip on what stamp set you really like and where I can get the metal blanks with the pre-drilled holes? (I’ve started to play around with rivets and I’d love to play with those blanks!)

Thanks so much and Merry Christmas, Lisa

Kerri Lynne - I have always thought Hesston schools have such excellent facilities – and love the banner photos of the seniors. That’s a great idea. The random photos gave me a chuckle, especially the Dorothy/Toto one… showing my age that I know that Toto song! Merry Christmas to the Duerksens!

sharon / theprincipledtype.blogspot.com - i freakin Love walking a run. 🙂 🙂 🙂

and, please? -the story for the granny panties that look freshly washed and belonging to you?? i’m not judging. (believe me, i am not judging, lol!!)

Kelly - AHHH! I know Reina. THE Reina! 🙂 Her cookies are AMAZING! And she is the kindest. I have given them as gifts for the past many years, and we always like to keep some in our freezer, for us.

Kathie M. - Such a fun post!! I miss basketball, looks like it will be another fun year!! Merry Christmas to you and your family!!

Emily L - I have never commented but man alive, I gasped when I saw the garth pics!!!! I am the biggest fan of that man and he has yet to show up in New Mexico where I live!!!!! I bet you had the best time. I love these random posts and your blog!!!

Kathi - I love your random posts. Those BARN DOORS! Can’t wait to see where you are going to put them 🙂 Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Vitamins and exercise

like most of you, i am a busy mom trying to keep myself and my family on track with healthy eating and staying active.
it is not easy!
our whole family has a major sweet tooth… M A J O R.
we never met an ice cream we didn’t love! (or cookie!) (or cupcake!)
i try to prepare nutritious meals as often as possible.
i offer snacks of fruit or granola.
and thankfully everyone in our family likes smoothies.foodOne easy way to help me with nutrition is taking vitamins.
i am taking Vitafusion™ Extra Streangth B-12 and Annie has been taking L’il Critters  Gummy Vites.
she likes the taste & the bear shape. she is always the one reminding me to take my vitamin!
i am happy to know she is getting what she needs in case her choices of eating that day are not so great.
i like to know my bases are covered.
we are always encouraging our kids to turn off their screens and go DO something. and we usually mean something active like “go shoot some baskets” “why don’t you ride your bike over to your friend’s house?” “you could take the dog for a walk” “how about you go jump on the trampoline?” “want to play catch?”
i personally try to get in some kind of activity that requires moving my body several days a week.
it’s usually going for a walk or a jog after the kids have gone to school in the morning.
this month though i have been doing a lot of yoga – following along with a dvd.
it is very relaxing!
i love how yoga helps my flexibility and also strengthens my muscles at the same time, all while being very calm and quiet.
yoga also focuses on breathing and quieting your mind.
i’m loving learning so much new information about the process.
L’il Critters™ Vitamins has a program called Move Like a L’il Critter designed to keep kids moving with different animal moves.

Please enable Javascript to watch this video

we discovered that it almost the same as my yoga exercises.
it’s fun because annie and i can both be active together!
we roll out our mats and we can chat and laugh while being active. she’s always being silly so acting like an animal is another way to do that.LCV2LCV1LCV3she likes the sea lion the best! I do too… it is a great stretch for your lower back.
Click Here for a link to the video of these moves and try them with your kids!

Jessica To - I make sure my son takes a daily vitamin.

latanya - vitamins and sneaking in sauces and other foods

Heather S - I make them breakfast and pack them healthy lunches, and make them healthy tasty dinners too 🙂 I also remind them to drink lots of water everyday!

Kristen - I’ve noticed little things make a difference. An apple sitting a bowl is less likely to get eaten then one cut up in slices and offered on a plate. We also all love soup which is great because I can throw in lots of veggies.

WHITNEY - I ensure that I give them balanced meals, but also include a fruit and vegetable with each meal.

Heidi Jo the Artist - Having healthy foods available to them. Not buying unhealthy stuff on a regular basis; if it isn’t in the home they aren’t going to be eating it…at home at least. Making smoothies regularly, offering veggies and fruits at almost every meal. And of course leading by example by eating healthy foods myself. 🙂

erica best - daily vitamins

sherri crawford - i sneak good stuff into stuff they like

Thomas Murphy - My son eats fruit for snacks and has a vegetable with dinner.

Ellie Wright - If I can’t get my boys to eat enough healthy fruits and vegetables, I can usually get them to drink them. I make fruit and veggie smoothies for them.

angie - I don’t have children but I was a very picky eater as a child and my mom ALWAYS made sure that I ate a lot of vitamin enriched foods that I did like and I took a multivitamin daily.

Debbie B - i try serving healthy meals and supplement with a multi-vitamin

Jerry Marquardt - By keeping meals on the money with vitamins and having a set dinner time, I keep my mealtime more than just eating.

grace - Those exercise pictures are so cute! I give my son the L’il Critters Immune C Plus Zinc & Echinacea. We try also juicing and it works pretty well since my son doesn’t like much of veggies or fruits. Finger crossing he will outgrew those! Thanks for the chance.(Your comment is awaiting moderation)
Betty C – When my children were growing up I was very fortunate in that they didn’t have a lot of food dislikes. They ate almost everythin

Christine Nutterfield - i focus on 5 – 5 fruits and veg a day! fruits are always easier for my kids. and lil critter vitamins-they never complain about THOSE!

Julie - Would love it if you shared the yoga dvd/videos you use!!

Natalie - My daughter loves to try new foods, so I try to make new dishes using unique fruits and veggies and grains. She will eat it if everyone else eats it.

Lisa Brown - my tweet-https://twitter.com/LuLu_Brown24/status/681789971896770560

Lisa Brown - I make them smoothies with fruit and veggies; they don’t realize they are consuming the veggies and I am happy they are getting nutrition.

Deb Ford - My kids are good eaters, I just have to make sure they get enough veggies because they’d rather have more meat or carbs instead!

Kerry - I make sure to cook a fruit or veggie with every meal.

Cynthia C - I’m careful about the foods I choose and keep plenty of fruits and veggies on hand for snacking.

Jennifer - I am at ninja level with sneaking veggies into foods. I put pumpkin into chili and soups (adds a bit of sweetness, is a golden color, and is healthy!), onions, peppers, mushrooms, and garlic into hashbrowns or eggs (super yummy and again healthy!), and make at least two veggies on days when it’s a meat and potatoes kind of meal. Breakfasts are smoothies, with fruit and greens, and a touch of my homemade jam if they need sweetness. I also make as much of my things from scratch so there aren’t any additional chemicals. I can, bake, freeze, we get eggs from my parents farm, we buy a beef from neighboring farms where they also avoid chemicals, and my husband and boys hunt for venison.

Elizabeth - I have a two year old who is an extremely picky eater, as in, he just doesn’t like to eat. I try to feed him healthy things that are easy – yogurt, apple slices, carrot sticks, olives. However, it’s always a struggle. I’m thinking I should try these gummy vitamins with him.

Jodie Reimink - I try and make them a nutritious breakfast every morning and I pack healthy lunches for them every day–then at least I know that most of what they eat is healthy.

Betty C - When my children were growing up I was very fortunate in that they didn’t have a lot of food dislikes. They ate almost everything that was served and we made sure to add vitamins, just in case.

grace - Those exercise pictures are so cute! I give my son the L’il Critters Immune C Plus Zinc & Echinacea. We try also juicing and it works pretty well since my son doesn’t like much of veggies or fruits. Finger crossing he will outgrew those! Thanks for the chance.

maria cantu - I make balanced meals.

Jennifer Roehl - We have the sweet tooth problem here, too. I really find that what I keep in the house, we eat. So if I don’t have a bunch of junk food around our girls will choose healthier foods. That is really the only thing that works here. Cause seriously, if the candy, cookies, cake, ice cream is here, we have no willpower!

Marisol E. - I recently lost my first baby to a miscarriage, but I had big plans for he or she. I have been learning how to make food from scratch with healthy ingredients, like quinoa. And of course, had been taking a prenatal vitamin. I’ll also be starting a regular exercise plan so that I can lead by example whenever it is God’s will for us to have a child 🙂

Carolsue - I make sure they eat lots of veggies and fruit, in addition to taking vitamins!
Digicats {at} Sbcglobal {dot} Net

elma - well with the nine of us all I can say is I try.. the three youngest eat healthy snacks and lots of water and get good amount of sleep.. the older ones not so much!! Love the video!!

ELIZABETH P - I make sure to offer different veggies and fruits

Vicky B. - I make sure my kids get all the vitamins they need by planning meals with fruits and vegetables plus they take vitamins.

Maegan C - I don’t have kids yet but for myself I try to make sure to eat balanced meals and pack healthy snacks!

Jen - Vitamins give me peace of mind, but I definitely push lots of water and lots of rest.

Susan Smith - I give my children vitamins and make sure that they eat healthy and get enough sleep each night

Sabrina - I have three little boys under the age of 5, so it’s very important for me that they get their nutritional needs met every day. I offer a variety of fruits and veggies, whole grains and protein. And I also make sure we get our bodies moving everyday!

Christy - We try to have lots of fruit and veggie options available for snacks. If there is a fruit or veggie the kids are in to, we’ll buy it, regardless of the season!

Annie - My kids take a daily vitamin as well. But I also sneak in extra fiber in things that they’ll never expect me to!

Joleen - Healthy family sit down together meals and we keep moving. Sometimes games on the wii is a family dance party.

Mary Cloud - I try to make sure I cook some sort of veggies in every meal to make sure they are getting something nutritious.

Lisa - I include fruits, vegetables, and milk at dinner. I’m also learning what foods/snacks NOT to have in the house. I’m always looking for new ideas for breakfast and snacks so my 15 year old son will have good options.

Ann - I feel like getting veggies in my kids can be harder than fruit so I love making green smoothies with spinach or kale in it and they take a vitamin.

Shawna - Take vitamins, eat vegetables and fruits and for the most part eat healthy. Kids get exercise in daily and parents try to 🙂

Rachel - I make all of our meals from scratch and like to incorporate some of the cute ideas off Pinterest to make the meals look fun to eat.

Julie H. - Probiotics and lots of fruits & veggies!!

Becky J - We aim for a combo of 5 fresh fruits/veggies each day- nuts for snacks and rice, chicken and fish on a regular basis! Merry Christmas Meg! 🙂

Maria Mounsey - Vitamins, exercise, and hidden veggies at times…and not so hidden veggies at others. We try to encourage healthy snacks…granola, fruit, etc and try to limit the junk as much as we can…but holiday time is hard. We enjoy the time and just try not to overdo it.

Janele S - Every summer, we make a check off list for the kids that includes an hour of play outside. Most of the time, the kids remind us about it and it gets the whole family outside together every day! We also give our kiddos vitamin C chewables along with their multi vitamins to add to their daily nutrition needs.

Cara - I try to have a well-balanced meal on the table …and multi-vitamins!

Will G - We try to keep the junk food out and try to eat healthier foods.

S - I try to balance over the whole day vs a particular meal but all of my kids take daily vitamins. My teens take calcium supplements as well since they drink less milk.

Heather - My Daughter takes a vitamin, probiotics, and some supplements. She usually gets fruit with breakfast. A fruit and veggies with lunch, and veggies at dinner.

Pamela Stephens - I limit eating out and try to make healthy meals at home.

Heather L. - This is challenging! With four kiddos between the ages of 4-14, different interests, and extracurriculars, one thing we really prioritize is sitting down and eating dinner together as a family which seems to definitely influence better eating habits. We do supplement with vitamins as well, and, like you, often find ourselves encouraging the kids to move from screens to be active!!!

Leigh Anne Borders - We give them vitamins and make sure that they eat healthy and get enough sleep each night.

Sarah Branch - My kids love ‘milkshakes’. We have one almost daily as a snack. I include: plain greek yogurt, a package of frozen fruit, a handful or two of spinach and water. Changing up the fruit makes for different colors.

Melanie - My 12 yo takes gummie vitamins and she knows to eat one yogurt and one banana every day, and we always have a veggie with dinner.

Raelle - We make smoothies for breakfast, and really limit sugar intake, and make sure we’re getting outside everyday.

Megan - We remind them they each need 5 fruits and veggies every single day! If they reach that goal, their diets are usually fairly good.

Sarah - eating lots of fruit and limiting processed foods. Still working on veggies!

Kelly Sites - I try to be a good role model to our kids. If I eat well, they will. I try to limit junky food in our house, because if it isn’t here, we don’t eat it. And I try to serve balanced meals. We also work out a lot as a family; bike rides, softball, kayak, etc. We try to encourage everyone to MOVE bodes daily.

Janel - I try to have healthy fun snacks like Kale Chips/pomegranate seeds available. I have big kids who like these…my husband buys the junk food 🙁

Cheryl - We use the gummy vitamins at our house as well. 🙂 In addition to that, I try to introduce meals that only use small amount of veggies in them at first, then after they are used to those, I increase the amount slowly. This way they can appreciate the dish for what it is first and not just focus on the vegetables. 🙂

Elle - Daily vitamins are a must and balanced meals are also crucial. I encourage fruit as snacks.

Kathie McAuliffe - With two busy little guys, 3.5 year old twin boys, we always make sure they take a multivitamin along with Pedisure or some yummy smoothie or shake to help get those fruits and veggies in! My one little guy, Jack, just loves to eat fresh fruits and veggies so I am good there! A cup of milk and he is good to go all day long!

Amy - We choose organic/locally sourced whenever possible. We all take our vitamins and eat fruits and veggies with our meals. We also try to get outdoors to play or go for walks as often as we can.

Caitlin - We make smoothies! My 1-year old is a big fruit eater but not so keen on veggies…I can sneak them into a delicious smoothie and he will scarf them down!

Jessie C. - tweet-https://twitter.com/tcarolinep/status/679382971288150017

Jessie C. - I cook from scratch and make sure to serve balanced meals daily.
tcarolinep at gmail dot com

Kelly D - I give my kids a vitamin daily and prepare 1-2 fruits and/or veggies with every meal. I really try to keep up with this during the school year to boost their immune system.

Karen Van Baren - I have done vitamins for my kids in the past, but think a well-balanced diet is the best. I try to give them a rainbow of colors in their food!

Liana - We try to have at least 1 fruit and/or veggie with every meal, lots of smoothies, and we keep a veggie tray in the fridge for easy (healthy) snacking.

chrissi - this just happens to be our favorite brand of vitamin. everyone in our family uses them and likes them. so rare here. we do a lot of walking and have a game/play area to burn off some energy and have fun too. cute video♥

Tracy - I always offer 2 vegetables at dinner and switch it up nightly. I also always have fresh fruit available for snacks!

Elena - we eat fruits and veggies daily and take vitamins

Donna - I buy a lot of fruit and vegetables. I make my daughters lunch
daily rather then her getting cafeteria food. We bike ride and hike, in the winter we belong to our local Y .

eva scott - ha, those little poses are adorable! we take our daily vitamins, only drink milk & water, and try to eat a balanced diet. We also play soccer and football and try to spend a lot of time outside.

Julie Wood - tweet-https://twitter.com/JewelWood/status/679354631680462848

Julie Wood - I make sure to have healthy vegetables and fruits available every day for them to eat and we take the soft and chewy vitamins daily to keep us healthy.

Mami2jcn - tweet–https://twitter.com/mami2jcn/status/679350144001810432

Mami2jcn - They take vitamins and I make sure they eat fruits and vegetables.

Carlie Barber - We try to limit snacking and make sure our meals have lots of protein and veggies, and less breads and starches. Teens are hard to control, they just want to snack all day.

Leslie - For my three kiddos, we eat healthy most of the time (avoiding artificial colors, flavors, and petroleum based preservatives). We make smoothies and veggie based juices. And they take vitamins, probiotics, and cod liver oil. We also drink raw milk to boost their immune system.

Kathi - I make a balanced meal and don’t stress over the fact that they don’t eat the vegi that day. Tomorrow is going to happen and the vegi will more than likely be eaten then.

Michele - Hope your doing a list for 2016…this one really helped me last year!!

favorites from the internet | - […] the years, Meg has pointed me to some of my favorite things including this travel diffuser. While I’m on the subject of my girl-crush Meg Duerksen, I bawled my way through her […]

Linda - Makes me want to go shopping! Any ideas for teenage boys?

Amy Woods - It’s possible that I am a teenage girl in a 43 year old woman’s body, because I kinda want all these!!!

And, Meg dear, got a list in you for teenage boys? I’d love to see your take on that! I’m pretty much done shopping for my 18 year old young man, but I still need some stocking stuffers!

Rebekah - I’m pretty much set for this year, but I’m pinning this for next year. My oldest will be 10 by then. (WHAT!?!?)

L.M.B. - Meg, This is a PERFECT list! I’ve ordered 6 items on your list from Amazon (a few I had already ordered, and a few because of YOU!). Thanks so much. I’m really exited. 🙂

Ann - Love both of your gift lists! It’s always great to have ideas. Thank you!!!

meg duerksen - I bought the long black leggings and I wear them with all my long sweaters because I’m obsessed with the high waist!!! 🙂

Sasha K - I know this list is for teen girls, but I wanted to say thank you for sharing about the magic yoga pants.I got the 90 Degree By Reflex for all my best gal pals and it made the gift buying/shopping experience so easy Pease this year! More time to focus on the holiday!
Best to you and yours!

Kristin S - I’ve been looking for a less expensive diffuser. Thanks for the recommendation!

Signed,

A 44 year old teenager. 🙂

Liz Hurst - Great ideas! I can’t wait to go shopping now!

Kelly O. - Your lists are sooo helpful!!

jamie - such a FANTASTIC list.

Lori - I think this is a great gift guide! Love it!

Susan in KS - What a great list. I needed the help. Thank you!

Michelle from Australia - I think you have exceptionally good taste in movies. As I’ve seen all but 3 on your list! And thanks for adding yet more items to my ‘Pick Up When In The USA in 2016’ list! Thankfully Kansas will be my last stop before heading back to Australia so whatever I pick up in Kansas only has 2 flights to come home with me 🙂 Happy Christmas Meg!

Kori - Great list, but this made me laugh out for real:
“it’s still the bible but without all the thys and thous and begats.” 😀

nic - this list makes it clear to me that we have the same (fabulous) taste in all the things. especially movies. except i have to know where you stand on nacho libre: yay or nay?

Carol S. - Bravo, well done. Just ordered coloring book botanicals and prisms soft core pencils and Amazon gift card for niece…boom…done! Thanks Meg. You’re anniversary was dreamy btw.

Kit - Awesome list, Meg! But I MUST know what you love about the lighted mirror…I am afraid of those! I don’t want to see all my scary blemishes and wrinkles and weird hairs! Because what can I really do about that (except the hairs)!? I thought ignorance was bliss…

Crystal - How about kids… Especially tweenage girls?

Amy - Thank you! Love this list! And I agree with SoCalLynn…would love your ideas for the guys!

Kelly - This is the GREATEST list, ever. I put the essential oil diffuser in my Amazon shopping bag 🙂 Merry Christmas to me. I would add SOAP AND GLORY bath gel…THE BEST EVER. (on Amazon or Ulta carries it) I love the Clean on Me scent. So good!!!!!!!!!! I’d also add the book The Nightengale. Best book I read of 2015 (and I read a ton)

eva - I love this gift list for ordinary people!! I’m going out to find the suction cup thing right now.

But…’Bridesmaids’ and ‘the Message’?? together on one gift list?? just sayin’

April R - merry Christmas Ms. Meg
thanks for the inspiration today and all year long

SoCalLynn - There are some really lovely things on your list, but what I really need is some help with gift ideas for men!!! Do you have any suggestions?

anniversary perfection!

back in september, on our 21st anniversary craig gave me a card that said he was taking me on a trip on Nov. 18.
he told me to bring a swimsuit and a book.
and that was it.
i never asked for details once!  🙂
craig loves to plan!
he loves to think about all the things you could do when you visit a new place.
he is really good at details.
he is a people person and can handle people & noise together easily.
his brain can take in lots of information and make decisions.
i dislike planning.
i like to do practically NO things when i go away from my house… meaning i like to sit & relax & just BE with those i am traveling with.
i don’t need or enjoy tours or crowds or small talk or corny stuff.
basically… i prefer very little human interaction on a vacation from anyone who is not ON the trip with me.
(i sound ridiculous!)
i cannot make decisions with lots of information…. i shut down.

i say all that because he took in all that he knows about me and made THE BEST trip ever!
i felt so loved & seen & understood & beyond special.
it brought me to tears many times.
we have been through a lot in 21 years and this was complete paradise for us.
the best week of our entire marriage!
we were like newlyweds but so much better because we KNOW we can get through hard stuff… we’ve done it.
and we just like each other so darn much!

plane
we left our house at 4:15 am and traveled all day ending up in Tortola, an island in the British Virgin Islands.
we picked up our rental car… stopped at a grocery store for some food (which was a good hint that we weren’t going to a resort and i was happy to hear that) and then we found our house.
and i nearly died from extreme J O Y.
i mean… whaaaaaattt?
is this real life?!
am i oprah?!
IMG_8535IMG_8539IMG_8576IMG_8551IMG_8558IMG_8543PicMonkey CollageIMG_8586house
IMG_8712showerhousedetailsIMG_8585

craig is AMAZING!
he is amazing at lots of things but he is a PRO at using vrbo.com and that is how he found this place.
it was an absolute DREAM!
perfect for just two people.
excellent for those seeking quiet and rest.
and SO CRAZY beautiful in every way.

IMG_8554IMG_8936this was the view from every window!
no other houses around.
and about 3 minutes from the prettiest beach we’d ever seen!
IMG_8588
all the furniture was like this… heart eyes!!!
IMG_8688IMG_8555IMG_8926lizardIMG_8599
we took the house manager’s advice and took our 4WD car waaaay down to this beach.
the roads in Tortola are… wild.
i have never driven on anything like it.
SO steep!
or not even a road… just a dirt trail with huge ruts in it.
also… no street signs.
none!
and they drive on the “wrong side of the road”!
craig loved the challenge of all of those things and i was completely happy to attempt to navigate based on possible familiar landmarks.
IMG_8691IMG_8676
one other couple on this entire beach came as we were leaving.
they asked us to take their picture in the water with a #12 flag (Seahawks) and in return they took this photo of us.  🙂

IMG_8652IMG_8647IMG_8608IMG_8683
and then… we found out our 4WD wasn’t working!
two local surfers were coming to check the waves and attempted to help us… it was a no go.
that #12 couple eventually came back up that “road” and gave us a ride back up to the house.
everyone was super nice and helpful!
even the car rental people who just brought us another car that afternoon with working 4WD.
it’s close to impossible to drive there without it.

IMG_8982

IMG_8816IMG_8825
my favorite detail of the house was waking up in the morning and opening all the windows and doors right away.
and climbing back into bed for awhile.
the sounds of the ocean & birds and all the plants everywhere.
the breeze blowing through the whole house…
sighhhhhhhh.
IMG_8856IMG_8860
we found the world’s prettiest basketball court.

IMG_8882IMG_8886
we took a ferry over to Peter Island.
it’s private and only has the Peter Island resort on it.
if you sit in these chairs and raise the flag… a waiter comes to your lounge chair!!!
craziness.
it was a lovely place to spend the day.

we both read a lot during this trip.
i read Everyday Grace and craig read a gigantic book called Wooden: A Coach’s Life all about basketball.
gosh i love that guy.  🙂
and he really truly loves… basketball.
and me too i guess.

HA!

on one beach i stopped and bought a coconut.
i drank the water in it and then they chopped it up with a machete and gave me the pulp to eat.
i had never had fresh coconut!
it was so much better than coconut in a bag from the grocery store! (duh!)
IMG_8904IMG_8912
we went out to eat the first night and after that i asked if we could just cook at our house.
because that house was PERFECT and there was no reason to leave it!
i was craving quiet SO much and even a restaurant was too many people for me.
i wanted good food on the deck with my favorite person.
and wine.

here we are halfway through our trip…
look what just three days away from regular life does to our faces?!
who are those young happy carefree people???
five kids? who has five kids? surely not those people up there.  🙂

IMG_8986
we went snorkeling at Peter Island.
It was like swimming in a fish tank at RainForest Cafe.  HA!
it didn’t seem real… the only time i see that kind of sea life is at the zoo or theme restaurants.
i saw a sea turtle but when i tried to get craig’s attention i scared it away.
but can i say that there might not be anything less graceful than putting on snorkeling gear… the flippers!!

rocksIMG_9021
look who found me a heart rock in the BVIs?!!!

IMG_9025
there are wild chickens EVERYWHERE you go in Tortola.
on every road… every beach… every restaurant.
i felt completely at home!  ha ha ha!  🙂
drink
we watched about 25 surfers and it was so interesting!
We had never seen that in real life either.
(kansas doesn’t have much surfing…)
and basically we concurred that SURFING IS AWESOME.
we had major respect for them because we were both grossed out every time the ocean water got on our lips!
so the deep swimming and wave crashing and total hard work was really cool to watch.
my little phone camera couldn’t capture it though… i wished i had a big zoom lens.

IMG_9029cow
ummm… your cow is loose.
IMG_9043FullSizeRender 21IMG_9086IMG_9076
different surfers on a different day at the empty beach near our house.
they came on that boat and got off and started surfing!
IMG_9080
it felt like we were on Lost.
everyday.
IMG_9095IMG_9112
and that’s how big the surf was….his board cracked in half!

that day we decided to not try the road we had gotten stuck on the first day.
so we walked it.
i mean… HIKED it.
think of a treadmill incline at it’s highest level… that was this road… but worse.
IMG_9116IMG_9129
and the second we reached our car at the top it started to pour!
IMG_9136
ummm… your sheep are loose.

it appeared to be a thing.
livestock roaming freely where ever they please.

on our last day we took a boat to Virgin Gorda to see the baths.
WOW.
again… it did not seem like it could be a real place!
it was the most beautiful place imaginable!

that night we ate the best meal we’ve had maybe… ever?
it was a restaurant in Virgin Gorda called Coco Maya.
it could be because i was literally so hungry that i almost cried when we sat down.
for real.
(and maybe i did cry… but just a little)
but i think it was the best tasting food as well.
It was a tapas restaurant but it also served one entree… pad thai.
YES!
it was so good and i have thought of it everyday since we came back!
the restaurant was gorgeous too…it was ON the beach… open air… no windows… just perfect.
this pic is from their website.  it was dark when we were there and completely packed.

it was the best week!!!

an open letter to mr. duerksen:

craig –
you made me feel like luckiest girl in the whole world.
i mean it!
how can 21 years seem so short?
thank you for every minute of planning you did & every dollar you spent.
thanks for not thinking I’m a weirdo for not wanting to be around people & for cooking my own food.
or at least for not saying it.
and thank you SO MUCH for the gift of quiet and relaxation.
we needed it!
i’m so glad you’re mine.
let’s go back next week!!!

airportthen it was time to travel home.
sad face.
not because we didn’t miss our kids… but because kansas isn’t an island!!!
and that is a total drag!
why isn’t it?  why don’t we live on Tortola?!
reality.
we went right back into it.
complete with an ice storm the next day!
oh kansas… you’re dumb and i’m not speaking to you right now.
call me when you get an ocean.

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - Oh Meg – this looks amazing! I’m so happy for you!

And I’m more than a bit excited to have scheduled a few day stop in Kansas on my way between Upstate New York and Los Angeles. I might not get to Craft Weekend but I am going to at least get to see Kansas and that makes me happy 🙂

Jenny B. - I love it!

Tiffany - A vacation sounds lovely right about now, Congratulations on your 21 years!

Cheryl - Were you married straight out of the womb? Neither of you look old enough to be married for TWENTY ONE years! Do you have the fountain of youth in Kansas? Me = Envious. Can your husband call my husband and give him all the details of that trip? Please and thank you.

🙂

Jenn - How unbelievably awesome! You are one lucky girl! Beautiful pictures.
