weekend in chicago

way back in june, mr. duerksen & i caught a flight super early in the morning and hit chicago for the weekend – no kids!
our airport is pretty small but we DO have a dunkin’ donuts so i make sure to start a flight off right!

our first stop was brunch at Hutch American Bistro.
we were just walking by and it was packed so we figured it must be good.
9 times out of 10 if the weather is even halfway decent we choose to sit outside to eat.
and i always choose sweet and he chooses savory.
i ordered the Strawberry Croissant French Toast filled with mascarpone cheese and an Iced Macchiato with vanilla & carmel vodka – YUMMMM!
i have wished for this meal again so many times since!

on the flight that morning we decided to go to a Cubs game.
it had been probably 15 or more years since the last time i’d been to one!
we walked from brunch to Wrigley Field and it was as wonderful as i remembered.
it was a perfect day for a baseball game!
and the Cubs won!
it was such a fun environment – everyone was so happy out in the streets afterwards!

the rest of our day was spent wandering around the city.
we did some sight seeing, some shopping and lots of people watching.  🙂

on sunday we met up with old friends for lunch which was relaxing and sweet.
and the best guac i’ve ever had!
i’m so glad they had time to see us!

and then we finally got to the whole reason for our trip…
the U2 concert at Soldier Field!

we did the math and figured out that this was our 7th U2 concert with our chicago friends dave & jenny.
we’ve been doing this together for a long time!
i remember bring pregnant for at least one concert and it wasn’t with annie.
so many memories from all those years!
we had such a good night!!
the best weather…hanging with our besties all day… the lumineers opened…  and then U2!

before we left the city we were sure to get some chicago style pizza too.

i love any time that i get to escape with craig.
he’s my favorite.
🙂

jennibell - Glad to see you back blogging again (and a little time for me to sit down and read). Loved your summer pictures. . .you make me feel close to you when you pour your heart out (that’s weird, I hope you know I’m not a crazy stalker — bloggers become “like friends”). . .and then you inspire me to plan a weekend with MY love because in all of summer’s gloriousness, and working through “life”, and just makingdinnerrunningerrandsplayingchauffer I forget how important time away together is too. Thanks for the inspiration! Glad we’re in sort of the same parenting phases — you used to inspire me to create with my kiddos. . .now you are reminding me not to forget the one I made those kiddos with — ha 🙂

Lori - Looks like an awesome weekend!

LaurainSacto - Boy does U2 know how to sell out a stadium or what? That is a great picture!

back to school ’16

another school year has begun.
annie in 6th grade… talby is a freshman… sean a sophomore… scott started college!
whaaaat??
untitled (1 of 36)
how fun are those overalls?!
between that and the birks i thought it 1994 again.
and annie’s shirt – i wish it came in my size!
IMG_1564IMG_1572IMG_1581untitled (2 of 36)untitled (3 of 36)
one thing that is different about this school year is that sean has his driver’s license!
he is LOVING the freedom that brings.

untitled (4 of 36)
starting school is a great reason for donuts (if anyone needs a reason).
IMG_1563IMG_1876
scotty started his freshman year at Tabor College.
i cried.
often.
but i’m excited for him… he’s going to do GREAT!
IMG_1895
i mean he’s got 36 Ramens – what else would he need?
IMG_1903IMG_1909IMG_1921IMG_1926FullSizeRender
i made his bed one last time.
and hit my head three times!
IMG_1910
we have dropped a child off at college once already but it didn’t get easier.
it’s HARD to walk away and leave your kid!
but our pastor reminded me this morning that getting the years with our kids that we do is a gift!
we get time with them in our homes and in our every day and then they have to move on.
we raise them to leave.
it’s good.
it hurts but it’s a good hurt… it’s growth!

what a privilege to be all these kids’ mom!!

IMG_1932
🙂  Scotty i miss you!
do your best and try hard in all your classes!
i am so glad i get to be your mom!   🙂
IMG_1934
and then… craig and i took off for a weekend away with NO kids!
we realized it was the only weekend before sports and all the STUFF for the next two months so we got outta town!
it was such a great way to ease into the new transition.
we slept!
we went to movies both nights!
we ate really good mexican food!
and talked lots and lots about everything.
it was a great weekend!

.
and just for fun….

funny how my oldest child isn’t in ANY of the group back to school photos….
#funnynotfunny

and all of her elementary school first day pictures aren’t digital.
oh well.
she DID go to school even if she didn’t get in the photos.

🙂

Sharon / tpt - I agree with you. I agree with your Pastor, and I agree with your getaway!♡

Kasey - These pictures made me cry too. The tears started when you said you made his bed one last time. I want to freeze time with my 8 and 5 year old boys.

Tina - I just love your posts! I just see so many similarities between your 5 and my 5. Love it!

Ps-Talby’s shirt does come in your size. I’m wearing it today. Got it at Target. Going back to by the other colors it comes in. Don’t forget your cartwheel app too….it’s 20% off.

Jenny B. - I ditto Kimberlee! They have grown so much, and it’s crazy how time moves so much faster as we get older. Sigh… I needed to read this today. My oldest (6th grade) has been driving me nuts lately. I need to remember that my time with him is a gift. <3

Ruth Elder - Seeing the old photos just reminds me of how long I have been following your blog! lol And also that I need to plant more flowers next year.

Kimberlee Jost - Were they really that young when you lived at the farm? But it wasn’t that long ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tracy - We took our second oldest to Ku last week. You’re right! It wasn’t any easier than the first! Thanks for sharing what your pastor said…I love that and will try to keep that in mind!

Kelly Munger - The picture of Scott standing in his room, the one after you on the bed, made me cry! Why??? My oldest is just a freshman in high school so I still have a few years until that’s my boy standing in his dorm room but I’m already feeling the hurt of his growing up. How is he almost done here?! (this is seriously too much for a Monday!)

Patti - I only hae one….he is 28 now but when we dropped him off at college I think I sobbed for two weeks….I was nothing short of a hot mess lol…..now when he comes home at 28 i’m like ok…it’s time for you to go home and leave a mess of dishes in your own sink! lol

Tiffany - The throwbacks tho, priceless.

Beth - Well that was all fun and games until you posted the throwback pictures…and I cried! And I don’t even know you personally. Oh, it’s all too much! My girls are the age of your throw back pictures and it got me. Gosh, this mom stuff is so good…and so hard!

beth larson - Meg…what a great post, I especially loved all the old first day of school photos you took the time to post. All just so darling. The other fave? The case of Ramen noodles…haha

Kristi Rediske - I love how waffle is looking out your door in the going back to school pics-I think he is wondering why he doesn’t get to be in any pictures-the black dog does-HA! I love seeing the pictures through the years you posted, time goes so quickly-I am so glad someone invented cameras so we can have those precious memories to look back on.

Iris Brown - I cried while reading your entire post. So true. I then chuckled in the end.

Lori - Love the back to school pictures, and I can’t believe Scott is starting college! Glad you got a grown-up weekend to yourselves before all the crazy sets in 🙂

im in love! I’m in love!

my computer is dying a slow painful death.
i am currently using the desktop and it’s hard to remember how everything works.
and i don’t want to spend money on a laptop right now!!!
i have flowers to buy for the yard/graduation party.
not laptops!
blerg.

so i am going to blog quick (and hopefully) more often.
wish me luck.
IMG_5036
last week Mr. Duerksen had a birthday.
he got tickets for Mumford & Sons only 3 hours away on a monday night.
so we figured out all the details and went.
and here’s the deal…. it is WORK to make time to get away.
it is never easy!
it was only for one overnight and honestly i kept thinking “why are we doing this? it’s not even worth it for just one night.”

IMG_5046
but i was so wrong!
one night is SOOOOO worth it!
we had the best time!!!

the food was good… the concert was wonderful of course… the hotel was fine…
(and we even got to enjoy their fire alarms going off twice in the middle of the night!)
but what was so important was the time away from the normal roles of mom& dad
and just getting to be craig & meg.

craig & meg are so much more fun than “mom & dad”!

we needed it.

i know i tell you every few months after i am reminded myself so here i go again – getting away with your husband is so good!
if you think it’s too much work – i disagree.
do what you need to do to make it happen.
hire a sitter… ask your family to help… swap babysitting with a friend…
even if it’s only one night!

it’s so good for you & your husband… and for your kids to see that you are in love!

🙂

stefanie Shultz - Can you please tell me where you hot your Mrs. Duerksen bracelet? i love it!

Danielle - I would like even an hour away 🙂 Not at that point we can yet but one day! We went backpacking together before and it was so great!

Paula - Yummm. Where was dinner?

Becky - I love that your names rhyme! I’ve been reading your blog for years and just realized it now when you typed them together 🙂

Jennifer - You are so right!

ginny - Please please tell us your graduation party plans. I’m so overwhelmed. We want to have a backyard party but I have no idea where to start. What to buy, how to get yard and porch and patio ready. How to invite everyone. Send invites along with graduation announcements or a separate invite. It’s 3 wks away and I’m so unprepared. I need a To Do List STAT!! Help this clueless mama out please.

Jennifer W. - truth

genie from california - So true. For us, sometimes, its just a few stolen hours.
We call it Boyfriend and Girlfriend time. Just a little date to remind ourselves: we are best friends, lovers, and spouses.

Oh yeah, parents, too.

Congratulations on carving out some time.

Kimberlee Jost - I knew the movie as soon as I read the post title!

Heather S. - Amen to that! My husband and I ran away for one night last week and it was SO worth the effort to make it happen! Like you said, there is something so wonderful about just being us, not mom & dad, even if it’s just one night. The great thing is – it changes the way we treat each other (in a good way) when we slip back into those roles. Totally important for the kids to see how much we love and value our relationship!

anniversary perfection!

back in september, on our 21st anniversary craig gave me a card that said he was taking me on a trip on Nov. 18.
he told me to bring a swimsuit and a book.
and that was it.
i never asked for details once!  🙂
craig loves to plan!
he loves to think about all the things you could do when you visit a new place.
he is really good at details.
he is a people person and can handle people & noise together easily.
his brain can take in lots of information and make decisions.
i dislike planning.
i like to do practically NO things when i go away from my house… meaning i like to sit & relax & just BE with those i am traveling with.
i don’t need or enjoy tours or crowds or small talk or corny stuff.
basically… i prefer very little human interaction on a vacation from anyone who is not ON the trip with me.
(i sound ridiculous!)
i cannot make decisions with lots of information…. i shut down.

i say all that because he took in all that he knows about me and made THE BEST trip ever!
i felt so loved & seen & understood & beyond special.
it brought me to tears many times.
we have been through a lot in 21 years and this was complete paradise for us.
the best week of our entire marriage!
we were like newlyweds but so much better because we KNOW we can get through hard stuff… we’ve done it.
and we just like each other so darn much!

plane
we left our house at 4:15 am and traveled all day ending up in Tortola, an island in the British Virgin Islands.
we picked up our rental car… stopped at a grocery store for some food (which was a good hint that we weren’t going to a resort and i was happy to hear that) and then we found our house.
and i nearly died from extreme J O Y.
i mean… whaaaaaattt?
is this real life?!
am i oprah?!
IMG_8535IMG_8539IMG_8576IMG_8551IMG_8558IMG_8543PicMonkey CollageIMG_8586house
IMG_8712showerhousedetailsIMG_8585

craig is AMAZING!
he is amazing at lots of things but he is a PRO at using vrbo.com and that is how he found this place.
it was an absolute DREAM!
perfect for just two people.
excellent for those seeking quiet and rest.
and SO CRAZY beautiful in every way.

IMG_8554IMG_8936this was the view from every window!
no other houses around.
and about 3 minutes from the prettiest beach we’d ever seen!
IMG_8588
all the furniture was like this… heart eyes!!!
IMG_8688IMG_8555IMG_8926lizardIMG_8599
we took the house manager’s advice and took our 4WD car waaaay down to this beach.
the roads in Tortola are… wild.
i have never driven on anything like it.
SO steep!
or not even a road… just a dirt trail with huge ruts in it.
also… no street signs.
none!
and they drive on the “wrong side of the road”!
craig loved the challenge of all of those things and i was completely happy to attempt to navigate based on possible familiar landmarks.
IMG_8691IMG_8676
one other couple on this entire beach came as we were leaving.
they asked us to take their picture in the water with a #12 flag (Seahawks) and in return they took this photo of us.  🙂

IMG_8652IMG_8647IMG_8608IMG_8683
and then… we found out our 4WD wasn’t working!
two local surfers were coming to check the waves and attempted to help us… it was a no go.
that #12 couple eventually came back up that “road” and gave us a ride back up to the house.
everyone was super nice and helpful!
even the car rental people who just brought us another car that afternoon with working 4WD.
it’s close to impossible to drive there without it.

IMG_8982

IMG_8816IMG_8825
my favorite detail of the house was waking up in the morning and opening all the windows and doors right away.
and climbing back into bed for awhile.
the sounds of the ocean & birds and all the plants everywhere.
the breeze blowing through the whole house…
sighhhhhhhh.
IMG_8856IMG_8860
we found the world’s prettiest basketball court.

IMG_8882IMG_8886
we took a ferry over to Peter Island.
it’s private and only has the Peter Island resort on it.
if you sit in these chairs and raise the flag… a waiter comes to your lounge chair!!!
craziness.
it was a lovely place to spend the day.

IMG_8887FullSizeRender 24
we both read a lot during this trip.
i read Everyday Grace and craig read a gigantic book called Wooden: A Coach’s Life all about basketball.
gosh i love that guy.  🙂
and he really truly loves… basketball.
and me too i guess.

HA!

IMG_8890IMG_8768
on one beach i stopped and bought a coconut.
i drank the water in it and then they chopped it up with a machete and gave me the pulp to eat.
i had never had fresh coconut!
it was so much better than coconut in a bag from the grocery store! (duh!)
IMG_8904IMG_8912
we went out to eat the first night and after that i asked if we could just cook at our house.
because that house was PERFECT and there was no reason to leave it!
i was craving quiet SO much and even a restaurant was too many people for me.
i wanted good food on the deck with my favorite person.
and wine.

IMG_8911
here we are halfway through our trip…
look what just three days away from regular life does to our faces?!
who are those young happy carefree people???
five kids? who has five kids? surely not those people up there.  🙂

IMG_8986
we went snorkeling at Peter Island.
It was like swimming in a fish tank at RainForest Cafe.  HA!
it didn’t seem real… the only time i see that kind of sea life is at the zoo or theme restaurants.
i saw a sea turtle but when i tried to get craig’s attention i scared it away.
but can i say that there might not be anything less graceful than putting on snorkeling gear… the flippers!!

rocksIMG_9021
look who found me a heart rock in the BVIs?!!!

IMG_9025
there are wild chickens EVERYWHERE you go in Tortola.
on every road… every beach… every restaurant.
i felt completely at home!  ha ha ha!  🙂
drink
we watched about 25 surfers and it was so interesting!
We had never seen that in real life either.
(kansas doesn’t have much surfing…)
and basically we concurred that SURFING IS AWESOME.
we had major respect for them because we were both grossed out every time the ocean water got on our lips!
so the deep swimming and wave crashing and total hard work was really cool to watch.
my little phone camera couldn’t capture it though… i wished i had a big zoom lens.

IMG_9029cow
ummm… your cow is loose.
IMG_9043FullSizeRender 21IMG_9086IMG_9076
different surfers on a different day at the empty beach near our house.
they came on that boat and got off and started surfing!
IMG_9080
it felt like we were on Lost.
everyday.
IMG_9095IMG_9112
and that’s how big the surf was….his board cracked in half!

that day we decided to not try the road we had gotten stuck on the first day.
so we walked it.
i mean… HIKED it.
think of a treadmill incline at it’s highest level… that was this road… but worse.
IMG_9116IMG_9129
and the second we reached our car at the top it started to pour!
IMG_9136
ummm… your sheep are loose.

it appeared to be a thing.
livestock roaming freely where ever they please.
BVIflowerIMG_9169
on our last day we took a boat to Virgin Gorda to see the baths.
WOW.
again… it did not seem like it could be a real place!
it was the most beautiful place imaginable!
FullSizeRender 20FullSizeRender 16IMG_9173IMG_9198IMG_9210IMG_9212IMG_9222IMG_9260IMG_9261IMG_9264
that night we ate the best meal we’ve had maybe… ever?
it was a restaurant in Virgin Gorda called Coco Maya.
it could be because i was literally so hungry that i almost cried when we sat down.
for real.
(and maybe i did cry… but just a little)
but i think it was the best tasting food as well.
It was a tapas restaurant but it also served one entree… pad thai.
YES!
it was so good and i have thought of it everyday since we came back!
the restaurant was gorgeous too…it was ON the beach… open air… no windows… just perfect.
this pic is from their website.  it was dark when we were there and completely packed.

it was the best week!!!

an open letter to mr. duerksen:

craig –
you made me feel like luckiest girl in the whole world.
i mean it!
how can 21 years seem so short?
thank you for every minute of planning you did & every dollar you spent.
thanks for not thinking I’m a weirdo for not wanting to be around people & for cooking my own food.
or at least for not saying it.
and thank you SO MUCH for the gift of quiet and relaxation.
we needed it!
i’m so glad you’re mine.
let’s go back next week!!!
-mrs. duerksen

IMG_9301

airportthen it was time to travel home.
sad face.
not because we didn’t miss our kids… but because kansas isn’t an island!!!
and that is a total drag!
why isn’t it?  why don’t we live on Tortola?!
reality.
we went right back into it.
complete with an ice storm the next day!
oh kansas… you’re dumb and i’m not speaking to you right now.
call me when you get an ocean.

Lori - I LOVED going through these photos Meg! Beautiful doesn’t even do it justice. I’m so happy you got to take that trip. What an incredible gift 🙂

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - Oh Meg – this looks amazing! I’m so happy for you!

Janelle - You were in my backyard! I can see Tortola from my house! And no ones cow or goats are loose – they are all just free roaming. I have two random cows in my driveway right now. Stinky things.

Tammy - If Craig ever wants to plan a trip for an old married couple, we are going on 22 years and 4 kids:) He is hired! Way to go!

But the next USA trip booked for October 2016, is JUST ME!! So no big houses needed. Just room for one. And I’m more than a bit excited to have scheduled a few day stop in Kansas on my way between Upstate New York and Los Angeles. I might not get to Craft Weekend but I am going to at least get to see Kansas and that makes me happy 🙂

Jenny B. - I love it!

Tiffany - A vacation sounds lovely right about now, Congratulations on your 21 years!

Cheryl - Were you married straight out of the womb? Neither of you look old enough to be married for TWENTY ONE years! Do you have the fountain of youth in Kansas? Me = Envious. Can your husband call my husband and give him all the details of that trip? Please and thank you.

🙂

Jenn - How unbelievably awesome! You are one lucky girl! Beautiful pictures.

Carol Spenst - Reading this post was like a breath of fresh island air. The pictures are stunning, and it truly does look like an amazing place – so glad y’all had a great getaway!

meg’s week of summer… part 2

chicago2
it feels like a long time ago already but my super-fun-week-of-no-mom-business continued after the beach with my girlfriends.  I got home at 11:00 pm on a tuesday night and left again at 11 am the next day with the Mr. for Chicago.
we had gotten U2 concert tickets waaay back in the fall with our chicago besties & the date had finally arrived!
i love going anywhere with craig and a U2 concert is icing.
IMG_9971
he used priceline and got us a hotel room right in the middle of the city.  🙂
we are fancy like that.
i tried not to push for it (staying downtown) but it was definitely what i wanted.

i felt like the art work in our hotel was surely an original and hung just that day for me.
hee hee hee
i did really love it and made myself believe that no other rooms in that hotel had the same painting as mine.

IMG_9968IMG_9979IMG_9992
i could sit and watch this view for hours.
and at night… ummm people don’t close their curtains.
so i got to watch all kinds of stuff in all those apartments… HA!
the city is so awesome!  🙂

we wandered around pretty much every where in chicago.
we looked at buildings and fancy cars and i people watched every second.
at one point i said to craig “can you PLEASE pay more attention to the people?! i have no one to share my thoughts with if you don’t see anything that i see.”  🙂  we look at different stuff.  he’s noticing architure and i am thinking “where would a dress like that even be sold? it’s so interesting!”

IMG_9994IMG_9996
IMG_0027
and then it was TIME!!! (worst picture ever but the only one of all 4 of us)
dave & jenny took the train into chicago from the suburbs and met us for dinner before the concert.
this is at least our fourth U2 concert together!
our love runs deep.
IMG_0023
i didn’t mean to cover Adam.
or did i?
he’s not favorite.
although i have never actually heard him speak… so that is probably why.
silent people make me slightly nervous.
like maybe i talk too much??
not like he was actually standing there… or ever going to talk to me anyway… just saying why he is my least favorite of the four.
and i promise i would talk to him if we were ever together.
he would probably end up being my top favorite because i am usually wrong about the quiet guy.

you guys… this is how close we were.
that is bono.
he walked right past us.
and then climbed up on the stage right in front of us and it felt so surreal.
we had floor tickets for the first time in all the concerts we’ve been to (which is more than 4 because we have been without dave & jenny too) someone figured out that where the best place to be was and we did that.  we were against the wall in front of the stage!
FRONT ROW.
it was amaaaaaaazing!
IMG_0089
IMG_0088
another horrible picture but showing that the only space between Bono and me was that security guard.
and that really is bono – not a hologram all lit up.
i clearly needed to change my camera settings but i was too into the concert.
IMG_0180
they had two ends of the stage and went back and forth the entire time.
the screen was HUGE and went up and down and from see through to full screen.

IMG_0082
IMG_0157
they pulled this girl up on stage and sang “Mysterious Ways”
she was totally shocked to be up there but not shy at all.
i always joked that i wanted it to be me up on stage but once i saw her… young and wearing the U2 t-shirt and dancing SO FREE!
she was perfect!
i kept thinking what an amazing memory this is for her.
i felt like a mom.
and she reminded me of my Lauren.

IMG_0154
THEN Bono gave her a cell phone and it was hooked up to the huge screen and had her film them to the song California.
and she knew every word!
she moved all around and was singing her heart out the whole time.
he asked her name and she said “Katelyn.”
and asked her about chicago and she said “i actually came from mississippi for this concert tonight”
i mean… what could be better?!

IMG_0159IMG_0162
you can see bono’s huge face on the screen above… bono loves the close ups.IMG_0181IMG_0173
that piano came OUT OF THE FLOOR!
the floor just opened up and the piano came up from a laying down position!
like it hinged up.
it was CRAZY!!!
IMG_0164
best craziest most awesome night!!
so glad we came and got to experience it all again with jenny & dave!
IMG_0185IMG_0283
one thing we do on our no-kid trips is get dessert to go.
we are never hungry for dessert after a meal anyway but at midnight… YES!
so if we see a dessert we like somewhere we get it to-go and enjoy it as late as we want.

IMG_0198
we explored ALL over (walking in flimsy glittery flip flops – poor planning on my part) the city the next day.
we walked for about 8 hours straight.
craig never loses energy.
i do.

chicago4
we had lunch at Quartino.
we had walked by it the day before and it looked perfect so we came back…  and it was!

if you go to chicago… you should eat there!
we sat outside because i LOVE sitting outside on a nice day especially with the city as the back drop.
but then i went inside for the bathroom and it was by far my favorite restaurant bathroom EVER.
i am a weirdo – i know.
but it was beautiful!  i would like duplicate all of it at my own house!
IMG_0196IMG_0222
that is craig’s favorite building… it is very creative!
IMG_0203IMG_0209IMG_0213IMG_0230
we walked and walked and walked.
IMG_0217chicago3IMG_0257IMG_0312
and ate and ate and ate.
IMG_0236
i never get to go inside a Blick Art Supply store so when i saw it i was all over that!
we found these faux vintage anatomy posters for lauren.
she was so excited when i texted and asked if she’d like these.

IMG_0233chicago5
so craig got his exercise and architure fix and i got to look at paint and color.
win-win!
IMG_0244IMG_0260IMG_0261

IMG_0264IMG_0268
as the sun was going down we searched for a spot to eat (outside again)
and we found Streeterville Social because it was literally the building right in front of us.
ha!
it was a really beautiful place… and it was brand new!

IMG_0278

we have been married for 20 years.
it doesn’t feel like that.
i love getting away with him… no kids and no work.
it’s truly different.
being at home with the kids & regular life is good too but something changes when we can be all alone together for more than an evening.
we have been doing little trips every few months for a few years now.
a big long trip would be wonderful but for right now this is so good too.
i love these trips.
and him.
🙂

nakcus - Ooooooh I feel like I was there at the U2 concert! Thank you sharing your pics and your amazing seats! Love this and everything else you post 😉

Kimberlee Jost - Bono!!!!!!!!!!
I have decided I must go to a U2 concert before I die.

Melissa - I’ve been reading for years and years and have never commented, but I had to comment on this one! I’m a Chicagoan, and Quartino is my favorite restaurant in the whole city. Looks like you had an awesome visit!

I don’t remember how I came across your blog, but I liked it right away for all the beautiful color, and also because my husband is from Clearwater. Your Kansas pictures always make me so happy because we don’t get there to visit nearly often enough.

Kathy - You are so cute! Thanks for sharing the whole concert experience! I feel like I was there! minus the actual music. 😀

Angie - Thank you taking so many wonderful pictures of Chicago. I lived there all my life until I moved to the suburbs. I don’t get to experience the city life as much as in my younger years. Makes me want to take a little staycation downtown this summer…mmm

Michelle Erstad - I LOVE that sink from the restaurant bathroom~designing my dream lake cottage in my head and that is the sink I WANT!!

April R - haven’t commented in awhile but i just had to here – this is deeper than walking and eating and concert attendance and I’m so inspired. Marriage should be treasured and celebrated! we’ve never really had anyone we could trust to watch the kids (military moving around so much) so we don’t do anything like this as a couple – sad – but reading this i know we should do something for just us…something, I’m going to pray and brainstorm and google to find some things we can do.

I’m so happy for you and admire you and the Mr. for building and growing your marriage – congratulations on 20 and thanks for sharing and inspiring <3

Patty - Meg, I have been loving your blog for a long time. I rarely comment, but always look forward to and appreciate your posts. This one, though, I have to thank you for. My daughter moved to Chicago an year ago, and I have not yet been able to visit her. She shares an occasional photo, but I have no sense of the city she’s in. Thank you for giving me a glimpse of the world she’s inhabiting. And, happy twenty years to you and the mister!

Tiffany - I love this! My husband and I just celebrated our 10 year anniversary! We had 2 nights in St. Paul/Minneapolis, and I was smiling through reading your post, because it could have been mine. Many of the things you wrote I was like- yep! That’s us! We hadn’t been away from our kids for 2 nights in a row for 4 1/2 years! We loved our time just us so much! Hopefully it won’t be another 4+ years before we do it again. So happy for you that you had a wonderful time!

Lori - I’m glad you posted about your trip. Beautiful and looks so fun! Happy for you!

Christy - It looks like you had a fabulous time! I sure hope that was a chocolate cake shake in your cup from Portillos! They are AMAZING!

Erin - I love seeing my beautiful city through the eyes of tourist. I’m glad you enjoyed your time together. good choices on the Giordano’s and Portillo’s. :o)

nora - I just saw them at MSG on Sunday night – on the floor, too! It was soooooooo goooooooood! Larry is my favorite.

Jenna - LOVE these pictures!!! It helped fill my Chicago fix for a little longer till I can go back. Thanks for sharing and making my day … So glad you got to go!

Lauren - My friend and I just took a girls’ trip to Chicago last weekend and it was amazing! By far one of my favorite cities ever!

Jenny B. - P.S. I gave the bunting I bought from your shop a few months ago to a friend at her baby shower tonight. She’s having her 5th child – her first girl! She loved the colors (lots of pink and orange and green). Love your shop! 😀

Jenny B. - Love!! I thought of something to comment after almost every photo, but as soon as I thought of something new, I forgot the one from before… So… I do remember thinking that your seats were awesome and The Edge was looking right at you in that last concert pic! 🙂

Dana Powell - Love this, and your hair looks great! You have been on my mind lately (long-time reader but infrequent commenter- sorry!) We normally live in France and went to a restaurant in Versailles right before we left (we are planting a church there). It’s called Le Cheese Club and it looks just like your house (subway tiles, green stools, etc.)! They were also playing, ‘All About that Bass’ in the version you posted on your blog a while back and I finally leaned over to my husband and confessed that my blogger friend Meg would love this place. 🙂 He definitely thought I was a weirdo at that point. To add to the weirdness, we just got back from Chicago and Michigan last week and I actually thought I saw Waffle there and then a family that looked just like yours from far away. When we got to the US, I was so surprised to see that you had been both places and around the same time even. We also stayed at a former scrapbooking house in IN that reminded me a lot of the Craft house. It was all so bizarre, maybe one day we’ll actually cross paths in real life. Ha!

Michelle from Australia - I transited through Chicago on my way to Buffalo last year. On my ‘completely on my own leaving my family at home in the other hemisphere trip’ 🙂 And then we all transited through Chicago on our way between Denver and Virginia Beach in December.

So two flights in and out of Chicago but haven’t yet made it out of the airport.

Maybe on the next trip to the USA? Here’s hoping!

Lisa M - We love Chicago! Beautiful and clean. A great walking city!

sharon / theprincipledtype.blogspot.com - omgosh. i follow you because of course, well, you are just awesome. but now? with the ‘you’re-intense-people-watching-and-why-isn’t-hubby-doing-the-same-thing-so-you-can-gab’ scenario? —we are like, brathars’from a different mothar!! (except sisters 🙂 🙂 🙂 )

Jenn - Love the pics, love, love Chicago! Its such an awesomely cool, funky, fun city. I love U2 too! What a fabulous experience.

chrissi - one of my favorite posts ever. thanks for sharing.

Kelly S - You are the CUTEST. Your hair rocks. It’s so long. Great post with fun pictures. There is a train that goes from my town (Lansing, MI) to Chicago, and it’s really a blast. It takes you right downtown by the pier. I can’t wait to do that again some day. Did you see Oprah? 🙂 Thanks for sharing your trip. I’d love to see what books you have been enjoying lately.

Kelly - Amazing pictures!!! My husband and I saw U2 in Dublin 6 years ago…best concert of my life! In the perfect city to see U2!! I have felt like we can’t top that one, but we would looooove to see them again and try. We also love to see the Avett Bros as a “couple hobby” since they tour around us more, and we have more chances to see them. Have you listened to Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors? Also a favorite. Try their Good Light album if you haven’t heard them before.

happy monday.

so far it’s been a good one.
i got myself into workout gear and did my Pump workout.
i really wanted to skip.  but i had skipped the day before so i couldn’t do that again.
i knocked that out of the way and now i’m working at the Craft House.

last week we had the best date night!
and it was for craig’s work… so technically not even a date.

IMG_2270
Avett Brothers came to wichita again!
they are in our top five favorite bands.  (probably in the top two…)
this was our third time to see them in concert.
i was smiling all night.
i love those avett boys.
i just watched a ton of youtube videos trying to find the perfect one but i always end up back to the 15 minute session on NPR.
it’s just my favorite.
the BEST part is Seth at 4:30 (ha ha ha)
they don’t sing it like that on the album but ever since i saw this video a few years ago i insist to craig that it be sung that way in the car and with great volume.
🙂
and at the concert… THEY DID!!!

IMG_2278
and i bought my first concert t-shirt!

wait….that’s not true.
i bought one at a sandi patty concert in 6th grade… i borrowed money from a friend to buy it…and still owe her that money.
and oh how i wish i had a photo!!!
it was a GIANT oversized shirt with i think a rainbow colored scribbly kind of drawing of SP singing.
it went fabulous with my perm and stir-up pants.
i feel like i’ve shared too much….

anyway…
craig left the next morning for a ski trip with his friends.
i asked for group selfies and he sent me several. 🙂
i have decided the my love languages are (i have several)
1. going to the movies
2. going to concerts
3. group selfies
4. bringing me hot coffee in the morning

HA.
i am so darn happy that he is out having a good time!
he works hard at everything all. the. time.
this guy deserves a break and time to just have fun!

with him gone i was in charge of getting annie to her first basketball tournament.
oh boy.
the weather was AWFUL and i was a mess but we made it.
i may have even started crying in the car when we finally arrived safely.
i was mad for several hours at the weather but that does no good does it?
annie did great!
i can’t believe the love that has built in my heart for kids basketball in the past 10 years.
i am so grateful for that.
because if i didn’t have it… these tournaments could be great dividers instead of uniters.
IMG_2345
they are 10 years old so everything is still about learning how to play.
everything she said about losing or frustration or missed shots i would answer with some form of:
“you’re learning a lot in every game”
“i liked how you stayed feisty”
“just keep trying”
because you know there are so many parents out there that break your heart at those games.
it’s rough you guys.
they get craaaaazy.
it’s the most bizarre thing to watch go down.

bottom line: she loves basketball.

this is what happens when you forget to collect the eggs in freezing weather…. bummer.

lastly…. i HAVE to tell you about a big giveaway with Marta over at FourFitSisters.com!
They are giving away a Les Mills Pump program!!!
that’s worth A LOT of money and also… it’s no longer available!
what a super prize!

les-mills-pumpIMG_1578
Go over to FourFitSisters and enter to win the whole PUMP program!
it’s my favorite workout i have done.
i am getting stronger every workout!
i love knowing i will be strong enough to add all the weight on eventually.
i KNOW IT.

hope your monday is going well.
craft house laundry is half done… planning my meals & workouts for the week… waffle has a haircut today… and a huge list of emails need to be written.

blerg.

Mindy - Oh for the love of stir-up pants. I had a red pair that I wore with an over-sized white shirt that had red, blue and green full sized handprints all over it. I seriously hope there are not pictures…I can still hear Sandi Patty talking about wanting to be Barbara Streisand – so funny. My first (and only) concert T-shirt is a Steven Curtis Chapman. I wore it out. Lucky you with your recent concert! Since it is far from Monday I will wish you a happy weekend : )

Melissa - Hey Meg,

I wanted to get your real opinion on this workout. I have been over to their site and I was looking at the Pyro workout. My friend which is an exercise instructor said it was really hard.

Do you really like this one you are doing now?

I am not a fan of exercise, but I feel better when I do it. I need to find an exercise program that I can do five days a week just to stay in shape and be able to eat sweets!

So I would appreciate your thoughts.

Warmly,
Melissa

Michelle Deckert Richmond - Kids sports….where we spend a good chunk of our time. I read somewhere the best 6 words to say to your child….”I love to watch you play.” They smile everytime I say this to them. I have 3 girls in hockey and one girl in horseback riding. Michelle from Canada.

jen - Stir up pants! I totally forgot about those….I wore them A LOT and loved them! And I totally agree with you, some of these parents are CRAZY! My son is 9 and into basketball and some of the parents are jumping up and down screaming at the poor kids. It’s insane.

Barbara (WA) - I always cried at Sandi Patti concerts – and I was already an adult 🙂

jill - I think “stay feisty” is going to be my new life’s mantra =)

Lynn - Use those eggs to make hard boiled eggs. They will peel SUPER easy!

the best.

20ONE20three20five20FOUR20two
we left town for three nights and four days last week.
it was so good.
it’s ALWAYS so good to get away!
we stayed at The Ambassador in Oklahoma City.
it was a beautiful building… beautiful rooms… i was even loving the hallways!
craig said we had to eat local the whole time and it was a delicious decision.
we slept LATE.
we ate dessert.
we rocked out with the Avett Brothers… there was NO ONE there?!
they were A M A Z I N G.  🙂
there were drunk 30 somethings wanting to fist fight because other drunk 30 somethings were being too noisy at the concert…  really?
and they were belching.
REALLY?  it always baffles me when grown ups act like that.
isn’t it written on my face that i am desperate for time away from child like behavior and have no patience for that nonsense?!
isn’t EVERYONE who is at a concert in the middle of nowhere on a thursday night?
isn’t that the thing?
and what adult belches in a crowd?
any who….
we saw movies.
he watched all the golf he wanted while i enjoyed pinterest and IG or crazy long showers.
we shopped.
we ate from food trucks.
we went to a street festival.
we worked out.
it was perfect.
another year we will go far away but for now ANY WHERE is good.
any where that i can have him all to myself to be able to have uninterrupted conversations.
and the sleep… ohhhh the sleep.
if you don’t get away often… YOU SHOULD for the sleep alone.
because you can become a different person when you get more than one full nights sleep at a time.
you BOTH can!
sleep does amazing things for our brains and our bodies!
you can BE a better mom and wife with sleep and rest!
if you have littles and it’s been more than 6 months since you’ve left them overnight… get planning.
if you have young kids who love to talk to you every waking moment…get planning.
if you have teenagers who talk back to you about anything and everything… get planning!
call your mom to watch your kids.  ask your friends.  find a college girl.  hire a nanny!
you need it.
i don’t know you but i know you need it.
as a mom…  as a wife… i know it.
and I KNOW without a doubt your husband needs “time  alone” with just his wife… not his kids’ mom.

🙂

thanks Mr. D for a fabulous restful time together.
and for getting the strawberry cake.

Mindy - I think one of the best (and often neglected) things parents can do for their children is to keep their marriage relationship strong. “any where that i can have him all to myself” – that is a good thing : ) Fun peek into the Oklahoma City area. I have never been but it sure looks fun!

Kerry - Oh I agree, it is SO good to get some time out. looks like you both had an amazing time – i’m also glad i’m not the only one with teenagers who answer back about anything and everything! ugh! x

Janelle - I do need it!! Care to babysit??

Kathie - I LOVE the rainbow polka dot dress…and since I am pretty sure we will not be in the same place at the same time wearing it…where did you get it! It looks FANTASTIC on you, not sure I can pull it off like you, but I would sure like to try 🙂

Lisa McCracken - Sounds like a wonderful time and a great idea! And, you look fabulous!!

Flower Patch Farmgirl - Hottest polka dot dress of the year! -S

Rachel - UMMM how did I not know you were in OKC?!?! I would’ve stalked you down to say hi. 🙂

Carol S. - Saw the Avett Bros. in Knoxville last weekend and LOVED it!!! I was shocked they weren’t sold out, but heard they would have overflowed the smaller Bijou Theater but not sellout the civic auditorium. Regardless, I was completely smitten with that show. Fun, fun, fun and you’re inspiring me to schedule a Nashville getaway with my 26-years of marriage hubby. Do a weight loss post when you get a chance, you look fantastic and I’m curious if you’re enjoying some meals and cocktails while maintaining that fab figure…and how much you’re working out, which is my downfall…not enough!

sasha - Thank you for this one. I love all the pretty things you share, but remembering to take time for yourself and your relationship…I needed that. 🙂

jackie - So glad you enjoyed your stay in my town……Plenty is really one of the best places to shop and the food trucks are incredible……….I wish I would of known you were visiting and I could of suggested a few more places for you to visit! Maybe another time!

Angela - Where is that cute lacy top from? Please don’t say from such-and-such-place-five-years-ago because I will be sad. 😉 I’m not really a lacy person, but I’m feeling I should take the plunge.

So glad you and the Mister had a good, relaxing time!

laura oyler - i love that outfit with the dress, polka dot cardigan, and cowboy boots! how cute!!

Kristin S - I hope you bought that polka dot dress because you look hottie mchottie in that!!!!

Tere - Wow, wow, wow.
Picture 42.
The waist.
So tiny.
Like one of the women in Mad Men. You look AMAZING.
And then the food….I describe a good trip by the great food. Yum.
I am so glad you had a great getaway with Mr. D.
xoxo Tere

Taylor - I’m from OKC, just moved to Austin last week!! Did you love the floors of the ambassador?! I want all their paint colors, too! It’s a beautiful space. Glad you had a great time!!

Alicia @ Investing Love - I was just away on a girls weekend and I was amazed at how many of the other moms had NEVER left their kids. Why!? It is so soooo important to get away and refresh, especially with your hubby. We have not been away together in forever and we are needing it badly. Soon…very soon! Thanks for this. Also, jealous of the Avett Bros. You’ve got one on me! But I saw Mumford, so we’re even 😉

BRIANNA - oh goodness. that dress. the colored one with the polka dots… where is it from, it’s fabulous!!

meg duerksen - MP – we ate at Iguana, Cheevers, Bleu Truck Park, Cafe do Brasil, Louies & Red Rock. We wanted to also eat at Stella and Waffle Champion. don’t wait till sunday morning for waffle champion. the line was OUT THE DOOR! i reccomend all the places we went!
ALL GREAT!
i don’t remember the store where the green thing was because it was at night and really crowded from the festival. it was semi close to the ambassador… 10 minute walk? it was a big place full of all second hand stuff. awesome, beautiful stuff…pricey though.

AMY JUPIN – that dress was at Anthro. i tried it on and put it back. 🙂 i will gladly help you choose your outfits for a getaway. lets FaceTime! ha ha ha!

Dianne - I just got back from a week away with my husband and the father of my five kids. I couldn’t agree more with your last statement. I am also glad you enjoyed my town – OKC. And glad I didn’t run into you anywhere because I would have totally embarrased myself. 😉

Lisa - Yes, yes and yes! Couldn’t agree with you more. Every married couple NEEDS time away. And it doesn’t have to be expensive! We don’t have much extra money so we find some cheap deal at a hotel close by and do that. Once a year probably. Even just a night away is so good for the soul. But 3 or more nights is amazing. One day my husband and I will be able to do a week vacation to some exotic location! But for now I’ll take those small, nothing real special, nights away. 🙂

amy jupin - what is this fancy pants dress and that teeny tiny waistline i’m seeing?
we need a breakdown of outfits here.
and accessories.
and boots.
because if we are going to plan our trips, then damn it, i’m gonna need to know what to wear!

Charly - One of my favorite cities!!! I’m glad you had a great time in OKC for your anniversary! Now I need to plan a weekend trip there to see all my friends…miss that town.

MP - We were just talking about a short getaway to OKC! AND, we were planning on staying at The Ambassador! Can you give me any restaurant recommendations? Also, where is the pic from with green table and yellow stool? I’m glad you had a good time and thanks in advance for any info!!!

Jenn - I’ve never been to Oklahoma, but it looks like I need to make a trip! Awesome, awesome pictures!

tasha roe - So. Much. Fun!!!!!!
and daaaaayum, gurl! you’re lookin fine! you’ve always been adorable, but hello, miss foxy! and that polkadot rainbowy dress!!!! gah!!

Mickie Lara - LOVE seeing all of your pictures from your OKC adventure. I felt a bit like I was stalking you because I could almost always tell where you were from the pics…ha! So glad you had a great time and makes me want to do a Staycation at the Ambassador and eat at all of our great restaurants and food trucks!

Jackie - Holy beautiful pictures, Batman! Love love love it. I’ve got 3 kids (6, 2, and 6 months) and ohmygoshyouresoright about the whole get-outta-there thing. Looks like I need to get planning!

Amy - Love your pictures! Sounds amazing!! You guys are so cute!

Marjie - I read a quote yesterday that went like this:

“How to ruin your kid for life. Put your child’s needs over those of your spouse.”

Away time together is so necessary to sustain a healthy marriage and sanity for yourself! Great post!
