Q&A

on instagram a few days ago i asked for topics to share about here on the blog.
i love hearing from you!

some topics mentioned were:

– parenting tips for survival and sanity with schedules
– parenting teen girls
– dealing with mean girls
– how do we handle kids with phones and social media
– parenting regrets
– parenting big kids and staying close as they grow up
– what are your favorite things
– favorite fashion if money was no object
– Organizing photos/storage/printing
– what is your decorating inspiration
– how’s supper club so far?
– how was the happy hour with jamie ivey
– furniture painting tips
– how did you start craft weekend
– what devotional do you like and tell us about your bible time – how can you focus?
– can you share about your best, most loyal girlfriends?
– food choices, healthy eating and fitness
– dealing with Post Pinterest Inferior Syndrome (that was a cute one!)
– how do you balance life, work, hobbies
– what is your next house project
– what made you want chickens
– favorite family meals
– what blogs & IGs do you follow
– what are you reading

so… i am going to touch on a few here today.
and hit others soon.

most of the comments were asking to see our house.
gosh… you guys are very kind.
right now christmas decor is put away and nothing has taken it’s place.
so i am working on that.
we hung the barn doors up and i am working on how to make it pretty again.
i promise to show it as soon i do.

and the rest of the house.

if you are new-ish here you may not know there is a category in the sidebar for home decorating.
you can see all the post that have ever been tagged in that category.

How do you like living in a more modern house vs the vintage?
well… i don’t want to sound ungrateful in any way here so please don’t think i am.
i love this 14 year old house and i’ll tell you why.
i like having a garage.  i like the big cement driveway.  i like that it was built solid, sturdy and reliable.
i like that there is a tornado shelter! i like that all the windows work.  i like having a sink in the laundry room.  i love our block and location on our block. i like the gas fireplace! i like large open space.  i like dry wall vs. plaster.  i like i like that the plumbing & electrical is not even two decades old.  it’s a really great house! i tell craig how much i like it here all the time.

BUT… if i could have an old white two story farmhouse with land and a view of sunsets and pretty fields with chickens all around the garden and an old porch with a swing…. i’d pick that in a heart beat.
gallery-1452634772-white-farmhouse-va-0216bb4185f77eff6f0161067e01d62b3143bc4f0a394c04cbd0864a411fe23bce54bff43b1d69e5d3d44d2025bc37f72ac2
but with old houses comes old plumbing and probably a lagoon.  Also drafty windows and doors and broken steps and paint that needs stripping and re-painting. it would most likely need new bathrooms and/or kitchen.  there would be wallpaper to strip and I’m sure there would be trim that needed to be painted white.  😉  There would be much more work than this new house is.
And i would still choose that over the new.

BUT as 40 year olds with 5 kids, 2 jobs and a non-stop schedule AND another house… the newer, more reliable house is the best option right now.

and maybe ever.  (cause we aren’t getting any younger)

SUPERskinnysideways

What is your morning routine?
oh girls.
this one made me crack up.
because i am THE WORST about mornings.
and about routines!
i love sleep so much it’s not even funny.
but i hate to go to bed at night… i’m a total night owl.
it’s not falling asleep that i love… it’s the not getting up part.
summer break with big kids is the best thing ever!  sleeping until 10 or 11? every day?! HEAVEN!
but i have kids in school now so i have to get up each morning.
we wake up around 6:30-6:45.
i make sure everyone got up with their alarm and i make coffee.
then i sit there and stare at nothing and drink the coffee while they get ready for school.
i say things like “did you put your homework in your bag yesterday?”  “are you bringing a coat?” “tie your shoes please”
but really i have trained them to be VERY self sufficient.
they don’t actually need me to be awake but obviously i want to see them and help if needed.
then at 7:30 they leave and run down the block to catch the bus.
and just two weeks ago scott started driving so he leaves a little after them and drives himself & sean to school.
after that… if i have nothing going on that morning… i go back to sleep!
then i get up and drink more coffee and wake up real slow.
FullSizeRender-24

probably not the inspiring go-getter routine you were hoping to hear… ha ha ha!

BUT i have a routine that i WISH i was great at and that i am attempting to try.
5:30 – workout
6:30 – coffee and quiet time
7:30 – shower
8:30 – have a productive day
hmmm…. it sounds horrible.
truly awful!
wish me luck.
it starts in the morning… i’m trying not to cry already.
i saw this blog post on pinterest and thought it was right on!
i’m going to try some of her tips.

being a grown up is dumb.

SUPERskinnysideways
and last for today:
How do you maintain your house… no clutter, no piles?

well…. there ARE piles and clutter here.
but not crazy amounts i guess. (the laundry room doesn’t count)
house work is not my strength.
my husband is the clean one and the one who keeps things neat.
i am not a slob but i don’t have a binder with cleaning charts and a schedule either.
i am able to be pretty chill about all of it… clutter and mess do not undo me.
i have no trouble going to bed with a sink full of dirty dishes or unfolded laundry.

i’d say there are 3 things that help keep it under control.
1. the kids clean up their rooms and bathroom on saturdays.
that is their space and their responsibility… i do not get involved.

2. our kids alternate loading and unloading the dishwasher
(meaning i don’t have to do dishes every single day)
we started this as young as kindergarten for unloading.
right now my boys take turns loading the dishwasher and the girls unload.

3. i have a cleaning service.
the woman who cleans for me is absolutely awesome!
i spend several hours picking up the house in the morning on the day she comes so she can deep clean.
having professional help has kept the clutter & chaos down immensely.
she cleans the main floor of the house except for annie’s room and the guest room.
that means the kitchen, dining, living room, hallway, bathroom, my bedroom and bathroom.
i know that it’s not the answer for everyone to have a cleaning service… but i decided about 3 years ago that FOR ME it was absolutely worth the money because the keeping up with the housework had gotten to be too much for me with everything else going on.
i hated it!
i hated thinking about it, worrying about it and of course DOING it.
and i hated that i couldn’t keep up.
so for me – a cleaning service was the answer.
it has made my life easier and it is my favorite!
i am grateful and it’s freed me up to get other things done during that time!
AND she’s so much faster than i ever was.
when my kids were babies and toddlers it didn’t feel like the best use of money because little ones are tornadoes of mess 24/7.
but with bigger kids who are gone all day and many evenings… it is totally worth it!

1347802982322_5646903

thanks for all the topic ideas!

and guess what i’m going to do now… yeah.
another basketball game.

🙂

Amy aka aphotomama - Thanks for answering!! It is so encouraging to read your answers and just get the sense of you being you and being content with who you are and where God has you. It can be a struggle in today’s Pinterest/competitive world where it seems people are afraid to just be authentic and real. So thanks. Love the part about the country house. I grew up in the country in the house my great grandfather built. Every time it would rain hard, the basement would flood. Thanks for all you do and share! Hugs!!

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - Do you know what a relief it is to know that I am not the only mom in the world who love, love, loves her sleep? That is all.

Kimberlee Jost - I need a tshirt that says “being a grownup is dumb”. 😉

Lis - I think you did a post about this awhile ago but I can’t find it. What do you do for kids’ chores? Ours are 6, 7, 8, 8, and 14. The house is constantly a disaster and chores are essentially non-existent. I make them clear and load their dinner dishes but the rest (my fault) seems to fall on me. What were your expectations and do you pay them?

Jenny B. - Love the Q & A! 🙂 Love the picture/quote about cleaning with kids. So funny and true. I also identified with “cause we aren’t getting any younger.” My husband I will both turn 40 next month, and I am feeling some urgency about big decisions. Are we going to live in this little house for the rest of our lives? If not, then we need to get a move on! It’s like “someday” is upon us and it’s time to act. And, oh my word, are we saving enough for retirement? And, what about the kids’ college tuition? Oy… You’re right. Being a grown up is dumb (and time is still a jerk).

Amanda - 3 broken windows, a handful of others that don’t open, floors that are unlevel, trim not on, that needs painted, snakes in the scary cellar, kitchens and bathrooms waiting for time and money to be redone. I could go on. I wanted to laugh and cry all at the same time reading about this!! Just a week or so ago I asked Craig how you guys were liking moving from old to new. So funny reading this now. I’ll admit I almost had to quit and tell myself to breathe…it’s ok…we gave up some amenities for others. But the journey and potential ahead is exciting. And in all of its imperfections, it’s feeling more like home in 6 months than the other did in 10 years. So there’s that. 🙂

Marcia (123 blog) - I love reading your honest morning routine. I’m also not a morning person but sadly, I have to get to work so I wake at 6.45 most days.

Interestingly, I heard on Gretchen Rubin’s podcast a night owl said “I have to exercise first thing while I’m not awake” and I think the exact opposite. I am useless in the morning.

I live in an old house and I love it but Lord, the maintenance….. I sometimes dream of no draughty windows and doors, and things that don’t leak, and so on. Still deciding 10 years on 🙂

Can’t wait for the rest of the Q and A

Momma Ginny - Meg! You are adorable!! You remind me of myself! If that makes sense?! Thanks for sharing!!!

Lisa - Being a grown up IS dumb! Haha! I could not agree more. And I wanted to cry when reading your schedule you’re going to attempt. Waking up and working out at 530am?! I’m not sure i could ever do that! I have a hard time waking up at 730am! Haha! Fun to see a glimpse into someone else’s life!.;)

Kelly - These posts are so much fun! I clicked over to your old blog via a pinterest link the other day and you know what I kind of miss (I really liked it but I only kind of miss it because it was a time suck but oh such a fun time suck!) that little side bar you had of all the fun linkies! 🙂 Kelly

Heather S. - Oh Meg! You and I could not be more different, but I love that I still think you’re fabulous! If we were all the same, well, all but one of us would be redundant!
Going back to bed after coffee???? 🙂 Impressive. I’m far too awake after coffee – that’s when I hit the elliptical!
Love the honesty! Always fun to get a window into someone else’s world.

Tricia - Your morning routine is basically identical to my own, except we start at about 6am, because the school bus comes really early here. lol. I sometimes wish I was a morning person, but I’ve about given up hope.

q&a part 3

Q: WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO?

A: NEED TO BREATHE

if this song comes on in the car i can PROMISE you i am belting it out right along with these guys.
(the video is acoustic but on the radio it is more rockin’)

and the whole album is great!

also….Secret Life of Walter Mitty Soundtrack

and no one asked me about movies but if you have not seen The Secret Life of Walter Mitty… YOU HAVE TO DO IT!!!
it’s on dvd now so you don’t even have to wait to go out.
and your kids will like it.
not little kids… they might be bored but my kids… ages 16, 14, 12 & 9 loved it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HddkucqSzSM

also…the new U2 album (that everyone got ticked about getting for free on iTunes)
thanks bono!!!!

and of course… Avett Brothers 🙂

Q: ARE YOU TRYING TO EVENTUALLY MAKE YOUR BLOG ALL ABOUT CRAFT WEEKEND?

A: NO.

but compared to a few years ago when CW did not exist and i didn’t talk about it at all (because it didn’t exist) and i had little(r) kids and they weren’t all at school all day… i had more kid stuff to blog about.  Now… i run a separate house for my business – Craft Weekend, renting out the craft house, Camp Create and my shop so that takes up a BIG portion of all of my days.  so i tend to write more about that.
it is not my intention to talk less about my family.
but school age kids are doing a lot of the same things each day… and once you’ve seen one post about volleyball… do you want to see another the next week?
bigger kids are awesome.
but maybe less…. “adorable”
and they don’t want their picture taken by me  (as often)
they also need more privacy.
so i can’t necessarily share all the funny things they say or experiences because they would be embarrassed and sometimes not everything needs to be said.
it’s interesting having a blog now compared to “then” and treading into uncharted territory.
i don’t know what it is like to blog with 4 teenagers. (next month)
i am figuring it out as i go.

IMG_2710
none of these photos have anything to do with any of the questions….

IMG_1472

Q: HOW DO YOU PAINT WOOD TRIM AND….
HOW DID YOU GET YOUR HUSBAND ON BOARD WITH PAINTING WOOD?

A: we use a primer first… Kilz 2.  You just paint it right on.
we have never sanded.
but i guess if your wood trim was really shiny or oiled… you may want to run some sand paper over it and then clean it with a damp rag.
THEN use the Kilz 2.
then after it’s dry… we paint several coats of Behr Ultra Pure White Semi Gloss paint.
it takes awhile (a very long while!) but everything around you is brighter and whiter and feels light and airy!
and my husband agrees.

i NEED white.
living in a house with dark wood makes me feel sad after awhile.
i don’t know why other than to say it’s just NOT me.
when you are living somewhere that doesn’t feel like “you” then it can affect (effect?) your feelings.
at least that is how my brain & body respond.

i don’t dislike it in YOUR house.
but i strongly dislike it in mine.

IMG_1800IMG_2734

Q: DO YOU MISS THE FARMHOUSE?

A:  yes and no.
yes because the outside was so pretty and we LOVED that and that barn was amazing.
no because of
1. we love the new house!
2. the farm was farther out and the kids couldn’t go very many places without needing me to drive them.
3. the toilet was 5 feet from my bed and the walls were very thin.
4. the dark wood  🙂
5. i have a new kitchen in the new house 🙂 🙂 🙂
6. we didn’t own it…. it was a rental and that can get tricky after awhile.

IMG_1459
these bath rugs were at…. Walmart?!!
whaaaaat?

Q:  WHY DIDN’T YOU SHARE YOUR HOUSE HUNTING – THAT WOULD’VE BEEN FUN FOR US TO FOLLOW ALONG?

A: we live in a really small town.
there were technically no houses on the market for a family of 7.
the house we bought was not listed.
we literally looked at this ONE house.  🙂
a couple heard we may be looking to move into town and they asked if we would you want to buy their house later in the year.
so we walked through it and decided yes we would like that.   🙂
it didn’t end up being as long of a wait to move as originally planned which was good for everyone.
and with it being such a small town… there is no rush on everyone knowing your beeswax before necessary.

Q: WHY DID YOU (and how could you ever) MOVE OUT OF THE CRAFT HOUSE?

A: we had switched our kids to a different school district in the town we are now living in.
we were driving to this town everyday and that was getting old.
craig and i grew up in a really small town & we wanted that experience for our kids.
where we had been living was not what we had envisioned.
we wanted a small school and a small community.
we were ready to move… even if that meant moving out of the craft house.
we had been looking for housing, discussing building a house for many months and then we found out about the farm house that was available to rent and we decided very quickly to go for it.
and 3 weeks later we moved.
it was FUN!
we don’t regret it one bit.
and then…. after that… Craft Weekend was able to really become something cool.
it freed me up to dream and think big.

i don’t think we will ever move back to the Craft House but never say never.

IMG_2736
and one more video… just for fun.

craig sent this to me and i LOOOOOVE it.

Sharon Morrissette - I freakin’ LoVeD The Secret Life of Walter Mitty!!!! And I only barely, accidentally got to even see it? I mean like, why isn’t everyone crowing about it?!

luv ya –
S

Allyssa - NEEDTOBREATHE is my FAV band!!! I’ve seen them 4 times in concert and they never get old! I LOVE them!!!

Karly Shelton - I just want to tell you how much I have adored your blog for the past 4+ years! I originally cam across it when I was a first year art teacher and found a few of the colorful art projects you did with your kids. Thanks for being such a great inspiration.

One day I’ll make it to craft weekend! ONE DAY:-)

kel - I saw those rugs @ walmart. I thought- that rug is so going to end up on whatever blog. Laughing this morning 🙂

mandy - needtobreathe has been my favorite group for YEARS. If you don’t have the album the Outsiders {it was 3 albums ago} it’s my fav of theirs. love that they’re getting more recognition!

Lynn - Love the song and REALLY love your comments about stage in life of kids and giving them their privacy. Knee deep in that and totally identify with the need to respect it… even though I want to boast about the albeit occasional sweetness I thankfully still see with my tee and pre-teen boys. Your blog is my FAVE and you’re the bomb, Meg!

Kristin - I have loved U2 since before most people knew who they were, so I was thrilled to see this interview. Who knew that they were so funny! And I had no idea that Bono had glaucoma. Thanks so much for sharing this. Now I think I need to go see if I can find a longer version!

Beth - I love the NTB song. I just jammed at my desk. Yes, your blog’s content has changed slightly, but you haven’t. You’re still funny, bright and quirky-cool (yep, just made that word up.) I enjoy checking in and seeing what you’re up to. Keep up the good work!

Michelle - Just a second request for a link to the rugs! I love them!!!

Kerri - I very much agree with your comment about living in a place that is not “you.” My husband became a pastor a few years ago, and we now live in a parsonage (a house owned by the church). It is small, old, dark – oh, I could go on and on. I still miss the home we owned for 20 years in our previous life: it had lots of natural light, a fireplace mantle to decorate, an open staircase. And I ditto the comments about info on those fabulous bath rugs 🙂

Elosabeth B - The rugs! We need info on the rugs!!! WorldMarket???

Carol S. - Always interesting…and thank you big time for that most excellent Need to Breathe video. Lifted me up today!!

Angela A - You probably knew this was coming but what stores sells those bathrugs?!

Bethany - I love Needtbreathe! My best friend and I met in Charleston for a girls trip in Sept and they just happened to have a concert while we were there. It was a great show!

Shaun - Hi! Can you post a link for those rugs? They’re beautiful!

Vonda - I just love your blog & you & your family:)!!! You are so real & you make me laugh! The dogs especially tonight-we have a pug,(who is very much like the little french bulldog you posted on instagram) & he makes me smile everyday:) I hope someday to be able to come to one of your craft weekends or camp create. I had a flower shop with my mom & sister for almost 20 years and I was full of dreams-then my little sis & her baby died and it changes life. But, my daughter is full of dreams & my 3 wonderful boys, & I’m sure God has plans for me yet?! Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that your blog is my fave:) Oh-and I love those rugs!!! Where did you see them at?!!

q&a part two

FIRST –  the winners for the mpix.com canvas gallery wraps:

Whitney – Paint in a fun color. Thanks

Cara – Construction paper!

Andrea Johnson – Pretty scrapbook paper!!!

give my your email addresses ladies and i will hook you up with MPIX!
(my email is cdduerksen at yahoo . com)
BLOGstripRNBW1000
back to the questions you asked me….

Q:  WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEAL TO MAKE YOUR FAMILY?

A:  Ummm…. their favorite meal that i make is lasagna.
the boys also LOVE the bbq meatballs…. the girls favorite is Noodles with Ham.
it always looks gross for photos but they love love love it.
now that i am eating healthier i cringe at all of these recipes… so i am working on ways to make these kinds of recipes in a more healthy real food kind of way.
as with everything else food/health/change related – it is HARD!

my favorite meal to actually make?  spaghetti.  because i could do it in my sleep.
after 20 years of dinners… i think i am kind of burnt out.
it’s not my most favorite thing to do but i do it.
i don’t like to think about food really at all or planning & thinking through ingredients & what goes well together.
i am more spontaneous and like to eat what i am in the mood for right then.
which is hard to do when you don’t like planning cause we don’t have those ingredients!

Q: HOW DID YOU LEARN HOW TO SEW?

A: my mom came up to visit when my kids were little.
we went to a fabric store and to sears and bought a sewing machine.
she showed me how to make curtains AND buttonholes and we made dining room curtains and a shower curtain out of an old chenille bedspread.
and after that i just kept trying.
just making things up and figuring it as i went along.  🙂

BUT… i just got to see my friend Shea’s new book School of Sewing: Learn it, Teach it, Sew Together this past weekend and if you have sewing questions or want to learn YOU NEED THIS BOOK!

photo-8081Maa6mLwUL._SL1500_
this is the machine i use at home for me & my girls   SINGER Heavy Duty Sewing Machine
annie just started a sewing class for girls her age.
she feels pretty grown up.

if you are looking…a sewing machine could make a pretty sweet christmas gift!

Q: HOW DO YOU MAKE A QUILT WITH YOUR DAUGHTERS? CAN YOU GIVE A TUTORIAL?

A: well first of all… we are still in the beginning phases.
and second… i don’t technically know how to make a quilt.
we are winging it.
like i do with almost any crafting projects i am just figuring it out as i go.
i find examples i like and then try to copy it.
quilt
taking a class would be EASIER but i like the thrill of figuring it out.
so these are some of my inspiration pics for the quilt they are making.

IMG_4061IMG_4063IMG_7770
then i will probably pay someone to have it actually QUILTED.

Q: ARE YOU AN INTROVERT? HOW CAN YOU DO CRAFT WEEKEND AND BE AN INTROVERT? YOU SEEM SO EXTROVERT ON THE BLOG?!

A: I am an introvert.
i even just took this personality test to make sure even though i KNOW that i am.
it’s fun… you should take it too!
i am an ISFP according to this and reading through the overview i thought it was super creepy because it was like they knew me.
weeeeird.

i don’t care too much for the weaknesses of this personality but i bet whatever your personality comes out as,  even if it the complete opposite of me that you don’t like the weakness part either.

and really… a blog is the perfect place for introverts.
we can quietly say what we want in our own time and in our own way… thinking, re-thinking, editing, tweaking until it feels right all in the silence of our own space.
and we can show our true self that we may have a hard time showing in the presence of others?
i think i do ok at that in real life… being “outgoing” when expected but then later i am exhausted!
that means i am an introvert.  i recharge by being alone.  a crowd exhausts me.  if a crowded party or event recharges you and you leave feeling great then you are an extrovert.

introverts
i am not shy but i am an introvert.
and for YEARS i thought that was a bad thing.
???
but if that is how i am wired… then it is how God made me… so it can’t be bad?
all types are needed to make the world an interesting place right?
im ok with it now.
🙂

also… texting?! oh my goodness.
it’s an introverts dream technology.

b28a440ae61a4ed71dbb6e9eea91cc54
it’s TRUUUUUUE!

Q: YOU SEEM LIKE YOU HAVE A GREAT RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR KIDS AND YOU ARE A COOL MOM… HOW DO YOU DO THAT?

A: ha ha ha
this question is interesting to me.
i do not think i can answer how i am cool.
i think my kids are great and genuinely like to be around them and like them as people.
i don’t even want to say anything more than that because it’s hard enough to be a mom… or a kid.
we have all the same things happen at our house as at yours.

there is talking back & fighting, complaining and disobeying and all that kid stuff.
we are no different.
i am trying to be myself… and reinforce how they need to be themselves and that i like them.
but also… behave.
and tell the truth.
and be kind.
and stop making that face.
and make good choices!

do you ever stop and think about all the “mothers” we’ve had as examples:

Carol Brady
Claire Hustable
June Cleaver
Roseanne
Elyse Keaton
Mrs. Garrett
Claire Dunphy
Kate & Allie
Christina Braverman

I’m just trying to keep up with all that coolness….

Q: WHERE DO YOU SHOP FOR CLOTHES?

A:  this is an easy one – 95% of the time i go here:
1. Target – shirts, cardis, dresses, shoes,  workout clothes (using cartwheel app & my target card)
2. Old Navy – shirts, pjs, dresses sometimes (always with coupons – NEVER pay full price at ON!)
3. GAP – jeans & occasional sweater (with 40% off coupon using my gap card)
4. tjmaxx – workout clothes

and really…. that’s about it.
occasionally i find things at Dress Barn (moo) and Cato since they are in my town.
i try other places and very rarely find things that fit me right or that i want to spend the $ on.

here are a couple of things i am loving TODAY.
tresdosclothesunoclothes

Megan - I was also going to recommend the Quiet Book. It’s good. I am an introvert and I’m constantly speaking in front of people for my job. It’s strange how I got here. But, I guess somehow right. I’d really love to be a writer, but then I worry I’d be holed up in my house all the time and never talk to anyone. And what would I write about? Thanks for sharing so much of yourself to us.

Tanya H - I am a complete introvert myself and I LOVE the shirts and Kermit pic you shared! 🙂 The other sign I love says:
“Introverts unite!
Separately.
In your own homes.”
😀 And I totally agree- blogs and text are the best inventions EVER. and facebook messenger. 🙂 Whatever it takes to NOT talk to the person.

Grace @ sense and simplicity - I love what you wrote about introverts (and the tshirts). I’m also an introvert who gets along fairly well in this extroverted world. I laughed outloud at the texting comment. I have a theory that the phone is preferred by extroverts and email (or texting) by introverts. Sounds like you agree.

Lisa - This has nothing to do with this post but I thought you’d love how this painting is made. I’m not very artistic but thought it was so cool! You may have already seen it on FB.
https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10202894960360543&id=1398536390

Julie - From one “I think I can make a quilt” quilter to another, I adore your fabric scraps. If you have any extra, maybe you could sell them in your shop. And let me know first pretty please 😉 Seriously loving the yellow bikes and tea cups.

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - I love the kermit picture. I so relate. The first thing that I tell people when I become friends is that I am a terrible phone friend. I blame it on my first job in customer service – terrible. horrible. mean people on the other end. I still HATE when I have to answer the phone.

Kristin - I suspected that we were kindred spirits. I like you even more now than I did before, if that is possible. Or at least I feel very close to you…but I won’t call! 🙂

Patti K - Yay introverts! You should watch Susan Cain on YouTube on the Power of Introverts…it’s so interesting. And I should make myself a tshirt with that pic of Kermit the Frog…I thought I was the only one! Love it.

Mindy - Enjoying the Q&A and a fellow understanding introvert…

Amy Woods - OH goodness! Those shirts! I want one. But then it might draw attention to me so, nah!! Lol I’m such an introvert. And a tad shy too. Texting, Facebook, Instagram….best inventions ever! Please don’t call me! Text me!!!;)

Heather - I had a friend who went to one of the craft events at the craft house. The first thing she said was “She isn’t a really loud outgoing person, she is more shy”!! when I asked about you! I died!! I would have never guessed! We need all types in the world!! I am out going and so shy mixes w/ me most!! Thank goodness for shy!!

Joy - I have a quick question…what is your favorite Sonic drink…always curious what all the crafters order when you go on a Sonic Run…sorry if this is a repeat or I missed previous blogs addressing this..btw…I like Sprite Zero with Cranberry…

Carol S. - Thx for seeing machine link, just bought it on sale. Nice! My expensive huskavarna Viking has a jazzed up bobbin that has been fixed before. Big project? Turn all my king size pillowcases into standard, which is the only size pillows we have in our home (but king size come in all the bed sets.). I will pay for the machine in pillowcase savings! Fun post. Agree on meal prep…so done on that front!

Jenny B. - Fun post! I’m an outgoing introvert too. ISFJ. I always enjoy going out with friends or to small parties, and I usually feel better when I’ve spent time with other people, but I also know what you mean about the exhaustion. I have told my husband after coming home from a baby shower that it was fun, but all that smiling and talking wore me out. 🙂 I had to chuckle when I looked up your personality type. The little graphic of the lady with the paintbrush is just so appropriate! 🙂

Kristi Rediske - Love reading all your answers-It seemed by reading your blog that you were an extrovert so this was interesting. I have a question-do old people ever come to the craft weekend-like 50’s or early 60’s, be honest, won’t hurt my feelings-just turned 60!

Tracy - I am a classic introvert too. Have you read this book?
http://www.amazon.com/Quiet-power-introverts-world-talking-ebook/dp/B004J4WNL2/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1413307177&sr=1-3&keywords=introvert+advantage+how+to+thrive+in+an+extrovert+world

You should!! It makes you feel okay (even good) for being introverted. I want my husband to read it because most of the time he wants to be more extroverted…like being introverted is a bad thing. So wrong!!!! I know what you mean about the exhaustion.

Many of my friends can’t believe that I’m introverted. That’s because they’re my close friends and I’m usually with them one on one or in a small group.. that’s when I talk and talk and talk!! haha

Elizabeth - I just bought that Limited sweater last night in both colors because they had a 50% sale 🙂

Lisa - Your introvert answer is very helpful to me (that was my question

Lisa - Your introvert answer is very helpful to me (that was my question

s - Have you read the book Quiet? I heard her speak at a webinar and it was fantastic. I am shy and introverted…and hate talking on the phone so loved Kermits face! And did you know target has a card option to link to your debit account vs credit card? With free shipping anywhere and anything and you still get 5 percent off? Awesome!

Are you still taking questions? If so that is NOT my question..haha. how do you make time for friendships with busy family life?? I work, have an active family, and am an introvert/home body. Other than book club and infrequent dinners out (twice year max) with close friends I don’t socialize beyond chatting at sports activities etc yet many moms around me do. The thought exhausts me but I worry about not cultivating friendships.

Kristen K. - I teared up while reading that if ‘God made me an introvert, then it’s ok!’ I am supposed to be getting ready to attend a women’s weekly Bible study at our church today (instead of checking email!), but the thought of the crowds and the remembering-all-the-names-and-prayer-requests exhausts me…and I feel like such a bad Christian sometimes. I’m not shy, either, just introverted…and most people would be freaked out to know I need to hide in quiet to ‘recover’ from the narthex crowd after church! 🙂 I host an annual craft/fair trade open house in our home each November, and it’s such a spiritual battle during the planning to trust that God will work out the deets and keep me focused on why I’m doing it…I love to plan it and craft for it, but then I just want to hide in the pantry! Thank you for sharing your heart – always! – and thank you for encouraging this sister today! 😉

kimberly oyler - i have taken tests like that over and over again. i almost always get the opposite results as the last time. this time i got ISFP. i know i am an outgoing introvert. people do not understand that.

Kimberly - I like the q & a! Keep ’em coming! 🙂

melissa - i hardly ever comment but am making two comments on one post? weird. 😉 anyhow, it’s so interesting to take the test frequently throughout your life, because sometimes I’m an ISFP and sometimes I’m a INFP. love those tests.

Stephanie - Thank you for answering my height question last week. You have a tall family!
I am an ISFJ–had to take that test for my psychology class. Interesting and fun!

melissa - IFSP/ISFP unite! Same here. Those shirts cracked me up. I think I need the first one.

Stacey - Hey Meg! I recently started quilting, taking a few local classes in my town. I am no expert, but I would love to help if you have questions. Love the quilt top you are working on. My favorite part is actually quilting….you may find it easier/more relaxing than you think! I was terrified of it, but after I spent hours perfecting the tops, I just wanted to keep going. Good luck!

Kimberlee Jost - I just took that personality test.
This will not shock you—I was in the middle for nearly everything.
Blah.

Kristin S - Kate and Allie! I loved that show.

Traci - I learned that we are VERY similar reading this! Except I don’t know how to sew (yet!), and I’ve never made a quilt. But I’m with you on the introverted but not shy thing, trying to make favorite recipes healthier, and general good style. ;]

12 answers to 12 questions

i am going to start with some of the easy questions… and let my thoughts swirl a little longer on the deeper issues.  🙂

Q:  HOW TALL ARE YOU?  HOW TALL IS YOUR HUSBAND? (because your kids seem so tall!)

A:  i am 5’7″ and Craig is 6’4″  and our kids are not short.

Q:  WHAT WAS THAT GREEN THING IN YOUR COFFEE PHOTO?

A:  it is a frother.  it is at World Market for $2.99.   (also at ikea or probably anywhere)
i use that coconut almond milk in my coffee but you can choose whatever “cream” you like.
pour it into a cup and then put the frother in the cream and turn it on.
it spins around and makes the cream into “whipped cream”
then you pour that into your coffee and you have a latte.
OR you can do that all in the same cup if your mug is big enough.

photo-9.PNG
i usually buy two frothers at a time when i purchase them because my kids can’t seem to resist trying to make the spinning stop when it’s on… and they break them.

they are also AWESOME for hot chocolate (which is also why it gets broken…)

but worth it for $2.99 every month or so.

Q: DO YOU NEED A LOT OF SLEEP?

A: well i am sure that i do.
BUT i have a terrible habit of staying up really late.
every night.
even when i have to be up early with the kids or things to do… my brain just doesn’t shut down.
so i just go with it… push through the sleepiness the next day.
but when i get to sleep late… i do it.
since we got stanley at christmas there is rarely a day to sleep in anymore.
that nerd is awake at dawn and whines little annoying fake cries to get out of his kennel until you go.
it’s A W F U L.
and i say all kinds of unpleasant things in my half sleep in the dark at him.
it is one of my least favorite things ever.  not kidding.

🙂

Q: WHERE DID YOU GET THAT CAT MUG ON INSTAGRAM?

A: It’s from Allen Designs!  It’s so dang cute!  You need one.
photo-8.PNG

and the shopper bags she sells…. MY FAVORITE!
i use them now for all my groceries and they hold a ton and they are strong & sturdy.
and everyone says “those bags are so cool?! where did you get these?!”
every single time.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FULL NAME?

A: Megan  🙂

Q: HAVE YOU EVER WATCHED GILMORE GIRLS?

A: I actually have never seen one minute of that show?!
that’s probably weird right?
i barely watch tv at all anymore though so i most likely won’t start it either.
i watch Parenthood, Grey’s Anatomy, Madmen, Saturday Night Live and Jimmy Fallon a few times a week maybe.
the first four i ONLY watch on dvr.
jimmy is usually live while getting ready for bed.

and i haven’t even watched any of the new shoes yet that started 2 weeks ago!
im not against tv… there just isn’t time?!

Q: CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR KIDS IN THE YOUNGER YEARS?

A: actually… i have been blogging since annie was tiny.
so you can go back into the archives (bottom right sidebar) and read the blog backwards kind of like a book.
i get caught up doing that sometimes.
and usually start to cry.
ha ha ha

img_1242_2

img_1336
so that is my answer… i did write about what they were like in the younger years.
and it’s fun to go back and read it.

(and man i miss those rainbow crazy days…)

Q: DO YOUR KIDS PLAY ANY INSTRUMENTS?

A: right now talby is playing percussion in band class.
in the past they have all taken piano.
lauren took guitar lessons in high school & sean played the saxophone for a school year.
i do not have the discipline to make them practice.  i am not that mom.
but we have provided the opportunity to play anything they wanted.
and i figured if we had one of them LOVE something then we would know how much effort to put back into it too.
none of them loved any of those things.
i could’ve made them continue but really… if they don’t love it in the beginning i don’t think they are going to love it a few years down the road after a million hours of practice?  i don’t know… maybe they would?  it’s hard to keep up on it!
i just want them to find THEIR thing… not what i want to be their thing.

Q: HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN ARTISTIC?

A:  Yes.  🙂
i was always encouraged to draw or create by my parents.
photo-77
and late at night (again with that habit) i would draw and draw.
my favorite subject in every grade every year was art.
i took it every elective all year round.
i was a… high energy… loud mouthed… rowdy…some might even say “difficult” student.
but not in art class.
never in art class.
art was MINE.
and the teachers were nice.
i would have suffocated without art class all those years.

Q: WHAT DOES CRAIG DO FOR A LIVING?

A: He a commercial banker.
my kids ask him all the time “did you crunch the numbers dad?”
he loves people, numbers and business-y stuff.
we are complete opposites.
but that is working for us so far.
he has a huge glass marker board in his office and all i want to do when i am there is draw a giant mural on it.
i can promise you 100% he has never thought that one time in 9 years.
ha ha ha

Q: HOW DO YOU STORE THAT BUNTING YOU MAKE?

A:  I don’t.  i make it and hang it  or make it and sell it.  🙂
but if i were going to store it…. i would wrap it around a piece of cardboard.
that is how we sell it in the shop.

Q:  DO YOU EVER WISHED  YOU HAD HOMESCHOOLED?  (or felt guilty about not?)

A:  never.
it is not my area of gifting.
i love school for my kids.  i love that they get to see their friends there.
i love that they can learn from so many different people.
i love that they have to learn how to deal with teachers they may not particularly like.
but that they also get to experience teachers that change their lives in a great way too.
my kids LOVE sports and being on a team.
they are so active and competitive and athletic.
it makes for a LOT of activities for us to go to but to watch them excel and push themselves and have fun is worth it.
AND we enjoy the games.  we truly do.

and ME?  i love being alone a few hours a day.
i wasn’t sure at first when my youngest went to kindergarten but i quickly got used to the beautiful silence.
i adore being with them and would choose that over anything but i also like getting groceries by myself so i can focus… trying on clothes in a dressing room alone… eating lunch with my friends… basically doing whatever i want from 7:30 – 3:30!

not to say that you can’t do those things as a homeschool mom.
or that homeschooling is wrong in ANY way.
but i know me.  i know my limits.  i know what i need personally to be a decent mom to my kids.
i WISH i had the desire to homeschool.
but it’s just not there… so i recognize that as a clear answer.

public school is the best fit for my family.

again: there is nothing wrong with homeschooling.  it’s just not my desire or gift.  🙂
and i am not looking for anyone to convince me as to how i could do it.
it’s not happening.

jennifer Wood - Can you tell me a little bit about your decision to get lean and fit? You look wonderful and I’m entering this journey myself and I’m a little bit scared 😉

kristie Browning - a question i would like you to answer is about your work out clothes… where do you get them? which ones are the best quality for your$$? your favorites? thanks! LOVE YOUR BLOG!
all the bright colors and the pics make me happy just looking at them!

Trista - just wondering where you got that cardigan your wearing with those stripped pjs from old navy? tried to ask on instagram but it wouldn’t allow, and i’m technically challenged.

Katy Apicello - Loved this set of questions and answers!

misty - love reading your answers !
I played the flute from 5th grade until my senior year. I hated it so much. I never practiced & I would cry every year {in my room} when it was time to choose classes because I didn’t get to take the electives I wanted to take because band was always on my schedule. My senior year I think my band director just felt so sorry for me because my heart was NOT in it & he let me spend the hour doing homework for other classes.
Because of that I have promised myself my kids can try any sport, instrument, activity they want & I’ll never force them to do it. My only rule is they must finish the season so they don’t let their team down. I was so excited to read your answer to that question. I hope parents take note & remember that if they think about forcing their kids to do do an activity their heart isn’t in. 🙂

Deb Meyers - these were great! and the marker board comment……… oh my word. Incidentally, my husband is an entertainer personality, in sales, and Engineers are his least favorite clients because they never fly by the seat of their pants and buy things on impulse 🙂

I am Sarah Braverman and my daughter is Amber. She is 17, and just learned about Gilmore Girls and so I anticipate what we’ll be doing during snowdays this year 🙂

Holly - All 7 seasons of Gilmore Girls is on Netflix now. They were added Oct. 1st. Lauren Graham’s character in Gilmore Girls has some similarities to her Parenthood character. So if you like her on Parenthood, you would probably like her on Gilmore Girls. Although now she has much better hair.

Kirsten J - Excellent answers…and comments, too. I’m with Lisa. Well said. And I like Lauren Graham better as Sarah. GG’s just not my favorite. But you should try it. And. I wanted to ask above but knew it would get lost…do you have bugs on your weeds?….errrr….flowers? It seems like anything I cut and bring in has bugs. Yuck.

Jacci - I think I’m the only homeschooler to comment so far. We have 5 kids, too, and we’ve been homeschooling for 8 years now. Just wanted to say I loved your answer, too! 🙂

Tracie M. - I have an aeorlatte frother from Bed, Bath, and Beyond that was a little more expensive, but pretty sturdy. I think it was $20. My best friend gifted one that we had for almost 2 years and then my daughter broke it. I bought another one about a year ago. We love it!

Jen - And……..popping back to say, you MUST watch “Gilmore Girls”! I believe all the seasons are now on Netflix-or they’re coming sometime this month. I think you would LOVE it!

Now, I won’t go so far as Kimberly and say it’s better than Parenthood or Mad Men (that’s kinda like comparing apples and oranges as they are all very different shows) but it is WONDERFUL! I have two girls (now 22 and 19) and watching GG together are some of our best memories. And we STILL quote many lines from it!

Caroline - Thanks for being so transparent. This marks my second comment ever. I commented once when you mentioned Andy Stanley’s sermons because I work for him, and felt the need to comment. 🙂 I don’t remember how I found your blog, but my sisters and I talk about it often. I have read since Annie was small…and with my own little one, treasure the posts, when they are so small. Thanks again. (I’m not crafty, so my sisters and I also joke that we wouldn’t make it to a Craft Weekend because we would only sit around and drink the margs as we learned from everyone else there.)

Carol S - Alrightee then! Interesting Q&A.

Maggie - Thank you for sharing your stories with us, Meg. I truly love them!

I’m just curious, as a public school teacher, why everyone feels the need to explain why they aren’t homeschooling. I truly appreciate the bloggers (Meg, Shannan) who stand up for us public school teachers. Thank you.

Rhiannon - I will say this about the music thing….not that’s it’s something you should ever regret. 🙂
My dad (and mom, but mostly dad) MADE us play an instrument when we were kids. We had to stick with it. It’s probably one of the only things he insisted on. I HATED it when I was still in grade school. I liked it when I was in junior high. And I loved it in high school. Many times throughout my adult life I am now thankful for that and I wish desperately I was still playing. I miss it. A lot. 🙂

Flower Patch Farmgirl - That thing about the marker board is making me LOL.

ashley gray - I rarely comment, but I read every day & loved your answers. I look forward to the next group of answers!

Kimberly - The q & a is a great idea– everyone asked questions that I would have written, so I didn’t add to the list! But, I do have to chime in and say, someday when you get a chanceand have some free time and need something to watch– you’ve GOT to try Gilmore Girls. Watch it with Talby and Annie when they are a little bit older.(like high school age) You will all 3 love it– (& it’s intelligently written, funny, witty, with great characters, and waaaay better than all of the shows you mentioned that you watch. just sayin….)

Dawn - Love the picture of you as a child! Soo cute!

Julie - Wow – loving these questions and answers so far. Looking forward to the next 12. No pressure.

Lisa - I too love your answer to Homeschooling….I have met my best friends through my daughters’ school ( we all volunteered and did PTA together) and can’t imagine all I would have missed out on if I had not had my kids in public school. I actually now work for the school district my kids went to school in, so it also provided me with a career when I got divorced and had to go back to work. I admire moms who do it, but I personally feel that there are so many +’s to public school, including the sports and social aspect, I never considered anything else. I just stayed very involved all the years they were in school….PTA & PTO vp, pres., chairperson for committees, Room Mom, etc. Met so many great people over the years from it!

Jen - A. I’ve never seen Gilmore Girls either.
B. My response to homeschooling would have been exactly like yours. Hat’s off to those who do it, but public schooling is better for our family. Our girls are much better off that way.
C. (Random) I know you’re around Chapman, KS. Have I ever told you that my grandma is from Chapman? She is slightly famous there. She was a Women’s Air Force Service Pilot in WWII. She’ll be 96 this month and still lives on her own. You Kansas women are tough! I love seeing your sunflower pictures (Grandma and I are in Ohio) because it reminds me of Grandma and Kansas. 🙂
D. Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!

Angela - Your comment about Craig’s marker board CRACKED. ME. UP. My husband is an engineer and I teach preschool at a zoo, and I swear, doing half the stuff I spend my days doing would never, ever cross his mind.

Jen - I have NEVER EVER NOT ONCE FOR EVEN A NANO SECOND wanted to homeschool. Nope! Not once! I’m happy for anyone who enjoys it. Go for it! But it’s not for our family. I, too, enjoy my time and I think that’s a totally normal part of parenthood/motherhood and growing up! I raise them to GO OUT AND BE GREAT! And I’m happy to give them that opportunity when they are 5 or so! 🙂

Interestingly, that’s also my biggest issue with many (not all!) homeschooling families: the idea that homeschooling is the ONLY way and it’s wrong NOT to homeschool. Nope. Not buying it. And what so many don’t realize is that it’s that VERY attitude that turns so many people off to the very thing they are hoping to advocate! Okay-off my soapbox.

Oh, and where do you put Stanley’s crate?? I think I’d find a place as far away as possible so I couldn’t hear the whining! 🙂

Jill - Love the homeschool answer – honest, respectful to the point. I feel EXACTLY as you do.
xo~

q & a

THREECollageTWOCollageONEcollage

hi.

photo 5

in the past i have asked YOU if you had questions for me.
and it has been fun.

🙂

maybe it still is… we shall see.

so let’s hear it.
ask me anything you want.
i have nothing to hide… i am an open book.
it can be personal or not-so-personal.
questions with a long answer or ones that will be easy and quick.

something you have been wondering?
something you wished i would talk more about?
something i said i would answer but probably forgot to answer?

now don’t make this awkward…..

i don’t want to hear crickets when i hit publish.

(if i could put a wide-eyed emoji face here i would…)

Michele Wright - My favorite is washi tape— Just love all the differant patterns.

Tricia - I love Talby’s name and I’ve always been curious about it. Is it a nickname? Is it a family name? I had never heard it before reading your blog and I just wondered how you decided on it. 🙂

Lindsey - Ummmm…..looks like these comments AREN’T awaiting administrator approval, as I had assumed. Yes Meg, you are very brave. Can you pull down the last one before it opens the Pandora’s box? Yikes! Sorry!!!!:(

Karina - How are you going to find the time to read and answer all these questions?? OK, that was NOT my real question…I am obsessed with convincing my husband we need a new kitchen and need more details about yours. I KNOW you posted about the reno already, but there is a photo of your husband eating breakfast at the new island and it is too small to Pin It…I want to show my husband what your kitchen looks like in detail and give him some idea of what it cost. So can you share about your kitchen again, please??? 🙂

Jen - You look wonderful. Your new lifestyle is paying off with all of your healthy eating and working out. I loved your post about getting away! Thanks for the nudge. 🙂 Enjoy fall.

Routh - You look absolutely wonderful and I wonder how you would describe your health and weight loss this year? What was the turning point?

Robin Allen - My question is (junker to junker) and ( lover of all things colorful and vintage )..where do you thrift shop and antique shop?? We too live in Kansas and my friends and daughter and I are always up for road trips to try new stores…do tell the name of the store and the towns they are located in…We can’t wait to go…you always find the coolest stuff!!

Kassondra - do you someday plan on moving and living back at the craft house?

Carrie - My first question is related to home & contentment. When you moved out of the AMAZING craft house & moved into the rental – was there a difficult period of adjustment or contentment issues? We currently have a large, beatiful home but it’s alot of money & energy to maintain. As I get older (40 next year), I’m craving more time & freedom and want to downsize, but I’m so worried that I will end up not being content with “less” & will end up regretting the decision. My second question(s) are all related to the new house. How are you feeling about the new house? I think all your previous homes have older, fixer uppers. Your current home is much more newer/modern than all your previous homes. Was that a conscious decision? Were there other factors that weighed more heavily than design or asthetics? How come you didn’t share your home search with us? (That would have been so fun to follow along window shopping homes with you!!)

Meredith Feisel - Meg! 2 questions. I liked the question of how you got into photography. I am a photographer myself (husband is professional) and that would be a fun thing to find out. 🙂 Also I would love if someday you could make an info packet or something creative for us to know how to run our own craft weekends in our areas, like a breakdown. I’ve been wanting to go for 4 years as well. I thought about trying to have a girls night at my house but not sure where to start.

Meredith 🙂

P.S. Can NOT wait for the answers post. Fun idea!

jodie - hey meg! how are you going to pick which questions to answer?!!
heheheh

Janel - Meg~ I’m wondering if you find it harder to make friends as you get older? (Probably not since I imagine everyone would love to be your friend!!) We had 4 of our close friend couples divorce over the last couple years and thru that I’ve lost many close relationships. I find myself in search of some more good friendships but at 45 I’m having a hard time figuring out how to cultivate new friendships. Any advice for meeting new people, starting to build friendships, and stepping out of my comfort zone in finding friends?

Traci - What has been your hardest moments as a mom to a teen daughter? I have 2 and WOW is it HARD!!!

Christina - Where do you store all of your photos? I have online storage, but still have a hard time removing them from my computer. My computer is bogged down because of it. Help!!

Sarah W. in Oregon - Happy Birthday, Meg! I just remembered we were born on the very same day and popped in to say hello. I wish you piles of blessings in our last year of thirty-something-ness.

Ann Marie - Hi Meg! I’m curious… Did you take classes for photography or was it just something you just sort of picked up? I think I’ve read it on your blog before (old blog) but I’d love to hear how you got into photography. I love all of your work!

April R - thanks for being a light.
you inspire good – so I’m wondering who/where do you go to be inspired each week?
Also, how’d you learn the tech side of blogging?

Katherine - I love your Q&As! do you have any photography tips or tricks?

Katie - I’ve been reading for 2-3 years now and have a few questions (easy and hard!):
What kind of music do you like? And who gets to pick the music when you’re driving with kids?
How’s Lauren? (I know this has already been asked a lot)
Do you or anyone in the family miss the farmhouse? I think I would have a really hard time moving away from there, but maybe just because I’ve always wanted to live in the country.

Andria - Can you recommend a fairly decently price pair of cross trainers? I’m going to start a fitness regime – treadmill & outdoor walking, as I become more fit I will invest in better footwear, but as a total newbie, I don’t want to shell out $200 right away. Thanks meg!

Shari - How are the chickens? I really enjoyed seeing the up close and personal pics of them. Love your blog!

Erin - Do you ever worry about putting your life online for the world to see? My husband is in law enforcement and I often worry about posting info about my babies, house and life on my blog for security reasons!

Suzy - How much time do you spend online each day? You seem to do SO MUCH all day long but yet you have to spend time on the blog, editing photos, searching internet for pics to post, etc.

Laura Pryor - Hi Meg! I spent last weekend at Craft House and I just have to say that I have never seen a more beautiful, creative and incredibly inspiring home. I didn’t want to leave and I already can’t wait to go back! I had such a great time with my crafty friends. Thank you so much for having our group! I purchased some prints, and am currently scouring the internet for just the right ball fringe and pom poms. I’m digging out all of my repurpose projects and favorite fabrics and collection of vintage embroidery hoops. We like seriously need to be friends!!! HA!!! Thank you again! I couldn’t have possibly enjoyed myself more!
Thank you!
Laura

regina - hi, this is pretty cool that you are doing this…so
-What does Craig do for a living?
-It seems like you have a wonderful relationship with your children…how do you it? you seem like the very cool mom.
-How did you come up with Talbys name?

Brantlee - I love it when bloggers do a “day in the life” post. Would you consider doing one?

Kathy - You are so adorable! I love how natural and genuine you are in your posts. Also, I just spent 18 months in KS. serving a mission for our church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) and I had no idea you were so close! I really want to have a craft retreat at your place someday (bucket list). Oh yeah, question: Who are the adorable black babies you are holding in the picture above? Did I miss the story? XO ~K.

Linda - M, I’ve been reading since Annie was little.I’m going to ask some very personal questions, but as an interested reader and parent, not a combatant.
You’ve been very open about getting married after becoming pregnant with Lauren. Does she ever get upset about strangers knowing that? Do any of the kids get “squicked” out about this information coming out? How do you handle the sex talks with them (especially if you promote abstinance)?

Angela - I thought of a second question. 🙂 What size jar do you recommend to use when you make the pineapple vodka? Hope you enjoyed you anniversary trip!

Jenni - Of course I want to ask you how you do it all?! Five kids, a cool independent business, an adorable house, an exercise regime, and activities, activities for the kids. Plus you always look great. Personally I feel frazzled 75% of the day. I have three kids and am a high school teacher. My kids are young, though. Are you feeling like life is a lot easier with older kids or no? Thanks

Alisa - Is your business profitable? Did you work before you started Craft Weekend & the Craft House?

Laura - Can you provide a link for that fabulous tee shirt “Everything Will Be Amazing”?

Corinne - Does your wash ever get done? I have 4 kids and my doesn’t get close to it. How do you handle it with 2 homes to look after? I also wanted to add a comment. I first found your blog after apple picking one fall when I was looking for apple recipes. I made your delicious apple bars and remember you had a cute picture of your girls on the swings or trampoline and I was hooked. I love your cheerful pics and all the recipes and art projects. I have used many of them over the years.

Susan - Hey Meg, Will you do more vlogs? Really love those!

Deb - How many over 50 year olds read you, and if they do, would you know it?

Jessica - Why do you still have the mPix ad on your website that always say that you can win free 4x6s but the contest ended like forever ago?

Karen Groves - Have you ever been to Coloma, MI? That is the little town where my sister lives. A while back you posted pictures of a vacation you took to Michigan, and it looked so much like my sister’s town. Sometimes when I’m visiting her I think, “I wonder if Meg Duerksen was here.”

Laura h - Dear Meg,
I am afraid of color in my house.
Are you ever afraid of color?

Melissa - All the amazing color in your home amazes me, esp. the vibrant green hutch and your dresser you did with milk paint! What does hubby really think about the color?! Does it scare him a little when you come up with these ideas or is he just amazing and completely on board?

Nancy - The question I asked very kindly yesterday is still “awaiting moderation”. Since this won’t make it out of “moderation” either and you will certainly see it, I would like to say that I believe only posting “positive” comments is very telling and shows your true colors. You most definitely aren’t willing to answer ANYTHING. You aren’t an “open book” and your lack of response only proves that this has become a place where Meg gets paid big money for getting stroked all day every day. I asked a simple question. It’s obvious you make money from the blog-the gajillion ads I have to click through just to see a post make that clear. Why not just own it and say so?

beth larson - Meg! LOve your LoNg haiR! You’re so pretty…here’s my question: have you and Craig ever struggled (as a couple?) He seems like an awfully awesome guy and of course we all love you- but most of us have some bumps in our road as a married couple.

Jackie - My question is about those two adorable babies in the pictures for this post. What is their story?

Meg - Do you miss the photography biz? I love looking at all your pix of craft weekends and your family, but I wonder if you ever want to return to capturing other peoples families (and newborns, gosh, the newborns!)

Jessica Jackson - Hi Meg!

I’m a long time reader and an amateur photographer and I was wondering if you’d consider doing a little photography tutorial post. I love all your candid action shots with your kids (close up of frogs/bugs in hands, vacation shots, etc.) and I’m struggling with a lot of what I assume are basics when I try to capture that stuff with my own family. Your shots are always so vivid and in focus! Do you post process? Do you shoot in JPEG or RAW? Do you find yourself shooting mostly at a particular focal length? Favorite lens? Ahhh! Can you just come mentor me in Virginia?

Also, you’re amazing. I have no clue how you keep your house clean and manage to exercise and run a blog and business and everything else you do. I have 3 kids (youngest is 1 oldest is 5) and I’m lucky to get the dog puke picked up off the floor by the end of the day. Share your secret!

Janelle - Thought of one more very important comment! Do those dog off the couch things REALLY work????

Janelle - One of the things I enjoy about your blog is that even though you post beautiful pictures…you also post “real” pictures. My favorites are when your house is a mess…and I loved the story about when you were being romantic in the bathroom and someone threw up in a laundry basket in the hallway.

Anyways…my question/request would be for you to share some parenting experiences…especially regarding teenagers. What are your thoughts on technology, house rules, homework battles, house jobs, etc. etc. You seem to be a really down to earth nice person and so I’d love to hear how you deal with the everyday stresses…that we all know are just minor stresses…but yet stress us all out! Totally understand if the kids don’t want to see that in your blog though 😉

Mindy - Do you think the use of color in our homes (brights vs. neutrals especially) has any psychology behind it? Okay, fine this is an obvious plea for free therapy… 😛

jenny - how do you control the use of electronics with your kiddos? is there a set routine?

elizabeth - are you going to create another beautiful master bathroom like you had at the craft house? it looked so beautiful and relaxing – exactly the bathroom i would put in my house if i had the budget to do it 🙂

Kelly - Your blog is my favorite too!! Our first 5 kids are close to the same ages of yours so i love following your family since we seem so much alike. Anyhow, do you ever wish you had home-schooled? Our kids are all in public school and busy with sports and activities like yours. But sometimes when I come across other Christian mom blogs or IG where they are home-schooling I feel guilty (but not convicted or called) So I guess I was just wondering if you ever feel that way too?

Wendy C - Hi, Meg – would love to have your recommendations from your trip this summer -we are starting to plan now for two weeks out West. Thanks!

MollyL - Hi Meg,

First off where did you get that cat mug?? I love it. I am so glad it didn’t fall off your hood the other day. 🙂

I have been a reader of your blog for awhile now. I like that you keep it real on your blog.

My question would be how to start my daughters, who are 10 and 12, off on crafts. My youngest is special needs, but she can do crafts, it’s just not sure which ones would be easiest for her to do. We don’t have a large craft space (kitchen table) so don’t want a lot of messy stuff to start out with, till I see how they would do. If you have any favorites that you would recommend to start out with, and crafts they can do together as there is an age difference. We have done small crafts together, but they are more crafty than me, but I want them to have fun.

Thanks!

Molly

Jessica - It seems like Lauren doesn’t get a lot of attention on the blog (perhaps by choice and because she’s out of the house)
You’ve been candid about difficulties you’ve had with Lauren as a teenager. I’m wondering how things are now and if you could let us know why things were so difficult….
I’m dealing with a difficult pre-teen myself.
I know you love Lauren, but her photos are few and far between (so it seems) – sorry if this seems harsh or negative

Ronda - I would also like to know how you got craft weekend started: ideas, sponsers, supplies, etc.? As I would love to come to one of yours at some point and see how it is all run (fingers crossed that I get picked). Also can’t wait to see pictures from Camp Create!

Michelle - Meg – I would love for you to share some family recipes with us. You look fantastic! Do you eat the same meals as your family or do you fix special meals for yourself?? I did the sugar detox with Marta but I am having a hard time getting my family to eat healthier too…. Where do you find recipes that are kid-approved and are quick to prepare? Thanks!

Elizabeth - What is your most proud moment to date? Your biggest regret? What do you see your life looking like in 20 years?

Jennifer Burton - I would love to know about your career background. You mentioned a job you had when Craig was still in college. What other jobs have you done over the years? Do you consider blogging a job or just for fun? Have you taken classes or are you just self-taught on the things you enjoy/excel at doing (i.e. photography, sewing, etc.)?

gretchen - You’ve done an amazing job of being a great mom and pursuing your own interests. How do you balance it? My kids are getting older and it seems that my life is consumed with their activities. I think you’ve accomplished a healthy balance of being involved with your kids and also carving out space for your own identity. Any suggestions? Do your kids complain when you have events/craftweekend/projects? How do you work it out as a family?

Cyndiloohoo - Just wanna say how fabulous you look in that pic. I can tell you have lost weight and your hair is super cute. How about a tutorial on the craft apron for all of us who will never be able to attend a craft weekend and please share some of the great recipes you guys use on craft weekends?

Lauren M - Rainbow sweaters coming soon? My babies ‘need’ them this fall 🙂

Liz - What’s the difference between raising boys versus girls for you? If you could live any place other than Kansas, where would you go?

amy jupin - ok, here goes:
1. let’s talk about music? i need some new stuff. what is your latest jam?
2. can we please have a craft weekend alumni party? five year reunion?
3. do you want to come over tonight? bring kimberlee. and jana. that would be nice!!!!!!!!!
4. how are you liking your new house?

carrie - I’d love to know if you’ve always been crafty/artistic? And how is Lauren liking college? Some others have suggested a “day in the life”- I would love that too!

LaDonna Abbott - During your craft weekends there is a shopping trip to “the barn” each time. Is it open to the public and if so where is it located at? I would love to visit the next time I am in the area.

Emily - You took pictures of my little boy Brody for his 1st and 2nd birthday. We still love these pictures…Will you ever go back into photography? Also, I would love to see some more of your cooking/recipes. Your meatballs are one of our favorite meals.

Amy - What are your favorite Christian based clothing companies? I love wearing shirts that make you stop and think while supporting small businesses. The one you’re wearing above is a great example!

Nancy - I’d like to know why I have to “close” all these ads when I come to read it. Not to mention the “sponsored” posts. I miss the old Meg, reading about your family and recipes and “life”. It’s sad that this blog has become all about “money”. And, since everyone will tell me that you have a right to make money (I agree) and if I don’t like it, I can stop reading (also correct), I will say farewell.

Sheila - Besides your husband, do you have a best friend – someone you talk to every day no matter what? Are you and your sister close? How about you and your mom?

Julie W - Hi Meg! I would love to see a run down of a normal day in the life of Meg. I know you juggle all kinds of schedules for your kids but still manage to fit in your blog, crafting, working out, etc, etc.

I was lucky enough to have been chosen to attend Craft Weekend 16, so I know what an awesome, cool, laidback kinda gal you are! I feel for these ladies who have been on the CW waiting list for years. I was on for about a year before I was chosen, so hang in there ladies who are waiting! IT’S AWESOME and SO worth the wait!

Thanks Meg; love your blog and seeing your pics on IG! Take care. ~Julie

Nicola - Were you born into a religious family? If not what is your conversion story? If you were what was your experience like? and how is it now raising your family?

Julie - I love your blog, the colour and creativity you share.
What I would like to know is do you ever feel down and how do you cope with life’s curve balls. My family and I have had a hard year, big unexpected house repairs and bills, a car accident, and now a disappointment with the high school we were hoping to get my daughter into.
Thanks for giving us the chance to ask questions about your life.

Julie - Hey Meg- I love your whatever blog!
I have been pondering blogs lately, as I analyze way too much, so here is my question:
Do you ever feel at all creepy that total strangers like to know all about you and see what you are up to with family holidays and what you eat and stuff, and do you ever feel like not writing your blog anymore? (Please don’t stop!)
sometimes I wonder why I don’t want to get behind on reading your blog, and then I ask myself, this lady is a complete stranger, so why am I so interested in her family photos and her life updates??
Sometimes I feel like a creep, but then I remember that hey! This is a blog and since blogs came about we get to invade on strangers life’s and it’s not weird?! kinda like people watching in the mall, only bloggers volunteer more info!! What did we do before blogs?! Anyway, deep thoughts, I know.

Kat - Meg, I would like to know if cutting out sugar is what has really helped you lose weight overall?
I have been going to the gym 4-5 times a week for 18 months and it seems to be only when I really cut down the sugar and carbs that I can notice a difference with my stomach and weight loss.
I only have a few kilo’s to go, but being 42 and having had 4 babies, it is not as easy as it used to be.
You look fabulous, so I thought I would ask 🙂

Lisa - Please please please help this mama out! How do you manage 5 kids messes? Do you have routines for picking up/cleaning/chores? Do they just know to put their crap away? I’m losing my mind with my 4 kids. Mostly cause I’m pregnant with #5 and so exhausted. But I need help! Seriously! We live in a small home and I can’t seem to get them to do what I want…. Ok, this sounds kinda pathetic. But any tips are welcome!
And PS- I do not need a perfectly clean house. I’m really ok with a bit of chaos and mess. But it has gotten OUT OF CONTROL. (Now I need an emoji with the tongue sticking out looking like a crazy person!)

Peta - No question just wanted to pop I and tell you that you are glowing! You look fabulous! X

Amber - Favorite books on faith? I’m going through a season where I am trying/struggling/fighting to reconnect with my faith and my spiritual side. I am currently reading Cold Tangerines, and feel as though my heart is enveloped in one warm hug. 🙂 Thanks!

Andrea - I’d love to know more about being a young mom and Lauren. I know you’ve said she doesn’t like to be as big of a part of the blog now that she’s older, but I’m curious about her! I’m also wondering how you and Craig keep the spark alive with such busy lives! Thank you so much for sharing so much of your life with us. I looooooove your blog! By far my favorite!

Patti - Hi from Canada!
Love your blog and all the fun things you do. Question: do you need a lot of sleep?

Bree - 1. I would love to know more about how the Craft House came to fruition?
2. Seeing the wonderful ideas and the theme of Camp Create has been inspiring to me to find my creative side again! What books, blogs, etc. do you find inspiring? I have poured so much into my family and the “daily routine” (a beautiful blessing!), I don’t really know where to start to find that creative outlet again while balancing life. We have 5 kiddos as well 🙂
Thank you!

Kellie - I would love it if you did ‘a day in the life’ post!

caroline helmers - I’m curious how you paint your furniture. Maybe you’ve shared before, but your results look great. I know you shared your milk painting, but what about your new table and hutch?

shannon - I want to know about the green thing you use to make your coffee. I saw it on instagram and am dying to know. I need to quit my love affair with coffemate!
Also, could you think up a cute Christmas gift for grandparents? ha. I started following you way back when you had the snowman handprint ornaments.

Debbie S - Yesterday I mentioned to my husband that I wanted to paint our two LR bookshelves white and he looked at me like I was c.r.a.z.y. My first thought was, “how in the world did Meg D. talk her husband in to moving out of a home they worked so hard to remodel and make their own?” Seriously, TWO bookshelves. So, spill it…how did you get your husband and kids on board with moving and so much change? 🙂

Lachalle Jones - Those lovely white IKEA sofas . Love them /hate them . Give the good the bad and the ugly about them . Are they HIGH maintenance? Thanks lots they are on the wish list and might make the cut .

Rachel - I adore your openness! You recently posted about Lauren arriving early in your marriage, and talked about her briefly. It was great to hear more about her. I’ve notice that she’s not on your blog that much. Is that by her choice? How’s your relationship with her?

Hannah - What are some of your favorite blogs?

Michelle Deckert Richmond - You are very brave to do this. You had an amazing idea when you thought to open up your charming home for craft weekends. I would like to know if you had to work hard to convince the rest of your family. I know at first they left for the weekends (hard enough) but then, when you left your house completely and went to the rental, how much convincing did that take to get everyone to agree? By the way….I love your blog…it’s the first one I read once I get my 4 girls off to school in the mornings. Michelle from Canada.

Candace - I would love to hear more about your kiddos younger years… It is encouraging to me to hear that my kids will turn out okay since yours seem wonderful! 🙂

Janel - Will I ever get picked to come to craft weekend? It’s been years waitng…. LOL!

I pray for Pam and her family….. Will they be coming back to the US for safety reasons?

I like you. That is all…..

Lisa - Oops! My question disappeared from your comments
You’ve mentioned in the past that you consider yourself somewhat of an introvert. I think you seem very outgoing–always hosting or participating in large social groups. Is that challenging for you?

Chelsea - My question is basically the same as Kathy’s in CT… how did you get started doing craft weekends and what tips would you have for someone wanting to do the same thing. I would love to do something like this but without a big internet following, a popular blog how is the best way to start working towards something like this. Thanks!

Michelle from Australia - I love the questions above. And love that two ladies have already asked exactly what was on my mind. I’ve been on the Craft Weekend waiting list for a few years now and would love, Love, LOVE to get my chance to come to Kansas. But coming from Australia a little forward planning (think…..a LOT Of forward planning!) would be involved. That doesn’t worry me. But realistically, am I ever likely to get chosen? Or should I just give up on it? Thank you for the gift of your blog Meg. It is often the bright point in my day.

Tanya - I just like ya! Always have. The one and only blog I keep up with. Smiles and hugs :):):)

Tracie - Hi Meg! Love your colorful blog, something I look forward to reading during my work day. So, are you interested in adopting a 30-something from California? We don’t have houses like yours, wide open fields and good thriftin’ out here on the west coast. I like to organize and make a mean homemade salsa! (Wouldn’t have to sign any official docs!) Ha ha ok—Would love to know more about the Craft House, the history, etc. Is life really that picturess and good in Kansas?? Last, I promise, How do you say not take home every treasure you come across when you take the girls antiquing?!? You pictures are dreamy

Emily - Did the idea of 5 kids ever panic you? We just found out we’re pregnant with our 5th (a surprise) We will have 5 kids in 7 years and I feel a bit panicky. You seem to enjoy the chaos so much. Did it ever throw you?

Alicia @ Investing Love - I really wanna know your blog tips…like how to be so stinkin’ awesome. 🙂

Georgia Newman - What advice would you give your 18yr old self?

Tina J - Hi Meg! Wondering what’s on your reading list and what music your listening to right now??

Stephanie - One silly question I have–how tall are you? Your husband looks tall and so do your boys, but I know cameras can throw things off quite a bit. Random, I know.
I too have been wondering about Pam and her family. I think about them every time I hear the sad news about Ebola and Liberia.

Valerie Alicea - I am a long time blog reader, and have loved seeing you be so intentional about being creative with your kids. What tips do you have for doing crafty projects with a toddler?

Angela - Hi, Meg! I’ve been reading for a few years, occasionally comment. I would like to ditto these questions: What does the Mr. do for a living? (Not specifics, just like what line of work) And would you ever post a tutorial for the ruffle aprons?

New questions: Where are your favorite places to buy cute, but inexpensive fabrics? I’m new to sewing. 🙂 And finally, what is your full first name? I’ve randomly always wondered if you were Meg short for Megan or Meg short for Margaret or just Meg. Is that dumb? 🙂

kimberly oyler - why did you guys decide to move out of the craft house?

midwestmom - Will you please please please walk us through step by step pictures and descriptions to make a quilt with your daughter? I would so love to dothis! We are super beginners.
Also i would love to see more of your meals as someone else mentioned. I have done 2 – 30 day Challenges plus the Sugar Detox so I’d love to see what you are making now that you are eating healthy.
Also just want to say I’ve followed your blog for years. Way before the Craft House and it’s one of my favorites. And like several others, I’ve been on the waiting list since the day the waiting list was posted 🙂 fingers still crossed!

Jacci in Ohio - Ok 🙂 I’ll go.

I think we’re all tempted to think others think the same way we do, struggle the same way we do, work through things the same way… but, that’s not always true. It really may be that you’ve been able to walk away from the Craft House with no struggle… but, if not, I’d really like to hear more about what God has taught you through leaving that house. Our own family moved 5 years ago into a home that we’ve been remodeling since. It’s been a looooong, extended lesson for me in contentment, thankfulness, materialism, and what really makes a house “home”. It has exposed idols I didn’t realize I was clinging to. I struggled SO much with having most of my house ugly and torn up for years. I’ve been overwhelmed by the sheer amount of work remaining. I know you and Craig have completely redone two homes. If you’ve had to work through struggles like that, I would be encouraged to read about them… and about what you’ve learned… where you are now.

Thanks, Meg 🙂

Tammy - Meg, I’ve been following your blog for 6-7 years because it has always been fun to see what you’ve crafted, cooked & decorated next. I would love to know more about your spiritual side – your personal testimony, how you nurture your faith as well as your favorite books/devotionals. Thanks for continuing to share your life with all of us. Your blogging brings color to the world as well as to the heart. 🙂

Nicole - Would you ever sell your clothes you don’t wear anymore on your blog?? Like first come first serve type of thing? I love all the clothes you wear!!

Amy - It’s really inspiring to see you work on your weight loss. What is the most you ever weighed? How did you maintain a positive body image when you were heavier?

How did you learn to sew? And to do DIY projects?

What is your biggest struggle as a mother? What was your biggest struggle as a mother of young children?

Thanks for opening up to questions. I’m interested to read your responses.

Karen Boldt - As someone who comes from a Mennonite background, I see the name Duerksen and of course like any good Mennonite wonder if we could be distantly related?! Or more specifically I suppose to your husband if that is his last name. And Mennonite is a big word and means lots, to different people in different parts of the world. (I’m Canadian) So my question that I’ve often wondered is- do you and your husband embrace the faith of our Mennonite heritage?

Melissa - Faithful reader since ’08 🙂 love your blog.

Also patiently waiting to come to craft weekend 🙂

How are the kids doing? Esp. Lauren (i know she didn’t want to be on the blog much anymore). How do you train the pups?

Angela - Will you ever take your *show on the road* and come to us in NC.?

Jennifer R - Love your blog! Who are those adorable babies your girls are feeding? Do your kids have chores? If yes, do you reward them with allowance or something different? I find I do way too much nagging to get our girls to get things done (especially with our 8-yr-old dau). Any suggestions?

Rebecca - Nothing to ask, just a BIG HUGE thank you for never disappointing me over the years….I think the first time i read your blog was when you were having a Bible study at your house and you ran out of cheese for cheese dip and sent someone to a neighbor’s and discovered you were out of TP and sent someone to another neighbors and Annie comes downstairs with yellow paint all over her…You sent Talby up to look and she said, “mom, it’s bad” she had painted the tv, among other things. When I have the time I will go back and read. Ok, love you to pieces!

Jill D - I would love to know more about your recent trip to Liberia.

Barbara (WA) - Just wondering if you have used the 21 Fix again? Inspired by you and some other bloggers I purchased the program but have struggled with buckling down and figuring out the food plan. And the DVD only worked in my hubby’s TV downstairs which is the room we are remodeling right now, poo. You look great so I decided to ask! (Oh, and I am probably old enough to be your Granny, heh!)

Betsy - Meg…I love your use of colors…have you always been into color or only as an adult? Thank you! Betsy

Wendi - ditto to many of these questions…
curious about the reality of the sugar detox when feeding my young family.
would always love to hear more about your faith.
does sharing online ever make things weird/uncomfortable with your “real life” friends/family/acquaintances?
would also love to hear more about the craft weekend business…how you got started, more of the details of the business end, preparation reality, how your family handles it when your gone, etc.
I just have to say that I love your blog because you are so real…I think we would be friends in real life 😉 thanks for sharing!!

Carrie - Hi Meg! I second questions about Pam and your fitness/health/motivation.

Also, not trying to be controversial or stir up drama… But I don’t get/disagree with the commenter about shame/guilt etc…. Don’t know what that’s about? You seem so real and transparent and positive to me as well as connected to the good and bad that is life. Rock on.

s - Will you and Kimberlee ever share craft weekend recipes??!!!

Amber - Hi! I’d love to know the deets on that awesome green stripey goodness behind the red lettered sign above the fireplace in the craft house. I’ve been dying over that thing since I first saw it!!

jessica - How do you manage to eat healthy with your kids and their junk food? Do you make separate meals for your family?

Lee Ann Willis - Hi Meg – I have been following your blog since 2008. I was curious since you don’t post about it much, how do you handle school work? How involved are you with projects and homework and how do you handle the evening chaos of dinner, homework & extracurricular activities etc?

I work full time and it seems impossible to fix dinner so I am a short order cook most nights for my 2 girls (age 12 and 9)and most things are processed foods.

Oh and one more question do you like Gilmore Girls? Seems the perfect show for you. 🙂

Elisa - how do we get more waffle & stanley pics?

how about a day in the life post (pick your most maxed day bc it always amazes me all that you get done)

can you do one of those tour guide posts for your area/region? I enjoyed your vacation post in St. Louis; added a lot of ‘must see’ to my vacay list

how do you incorporate your faith as a family in everyday living? how do you help guide your children to further grow in their personal faith?

broadly speaking, what line of work does your husband do?

so about those doggie pics… 😉

Em - Where are your favorite Kansas thrift stores or places to go treasure hunting? Or maybe some of your other favorite Kansas spots? I’m from NE Kansas but have a friend down your way. Also what do you consider a fair price for old quilts?

Lisa - Hi Meg

I recall you saying that you consider yourself somewhat of an introvert. I’m wondering how difficult it is for you to do so many large group social things. You seem so outgoing! Thanks!

Jenna - Nothing too serious here, but have you watched this video?! http://andreasnotebook.com/2014/09/hilarious-taylor-swift-pinterest-parody.html it is a good one for every crafty lady 🙂

Jamie - Your blog is full of great ideas, crafts, dreams, etc. Ever thought about publishing a book??

Anessa - Okay I have a few questions for you.

If I recall you painted all the trim in the new house. Just wondering what sort of process you used and how you feel about it. I really want to paint all of ours but am a little nervous about it. Also how about an update on house projects?

Did I see you making a bunch of cute flower type pins that you were going to put in the shop? Did I just make this up? Were they in the Shop and I missed them?

How are the girls quilts they were making coming along? They looked like so much fun. Also have you done anymore projects from that cute “we Love to Sew” book?

Okay guess that is it for now 🙂

Erin - What does the mister do for a living!?

Ellen - Hi Meg!! I love your blog…your reality, genuineness, acceptance and grace are so evident. Your sense of humor knocks it out of the park!! I have two questions, one of substance and one for fun. First, could you please describe how you and Craig keep your marriage happy and healthy? It is clear that you do a very good job of maintaining your connection. I am a therapist and am often asked for “the secrets” to a happy marriage. Jesus is number one….what are some others? Maybe Craig can give some input? Second, can we please see some more pics of your new home??? Pretty please with rainbow sprinkles on top!!! Thank you for being such a bright spot and blessing! You are adored! 🙂

Erin - Hi there! I have a random organization question for you–how do you store/wrap the bunting that you’ve made in the past? I have visions of mine turning into a Christmas-light-snarled mess of a nightmare! Thanks for (hopefully) answering. BTW, your blog is such an inspiration–bring on all that saturated color 🙂

Marjie - The question I always come back to after some of your “deeper” posts is…..What about your life makes you feel so (guilty, ashamed, unworthy, sad in your soul)? I don’t know if those are the best words to describe how I interpret your feelings from some of your posts. Was your post on your ‘Twenty Years” a freeing post for you? It was my favorite post ever!!!

Ana - Had you lost a lot of weight recently? Do any of your kids play instruments?
I love your blog. It’s the one I never tire of.

elma - Hi Meg!! Just love love love your blog!! I was wondering where you shop for all your beautiful clothes?? How do you keep your house so clean? Hows Pam doing??

Angela - I have followed your blog for many years, (it’s my favorite) I’ve watched it evolve which I realize is natural with the kids getting older and your priorities changing but recently I wondered if you’re tired of blogging or if you rather make it mostly about the craft house. So (finally, lol) do you think at some point your blog will only feature craft house posts?

Katy Apicello - I have a few questions for you.. 🙂

What is your favorite meal to make for your family?

How is Lauren?

Will you do a tutorial on the craft weekend apron? Please? 🙂

Amy Griffin - So how would you feel, if my Bestie and I showed up at your house one day and asked you to take us to the Barn??? I am just joking…well kinda!! LOL

Heather G - How do you do it all?! You have a busy life, how do you keep track of it all? Do you have a command center or planner? Do you ever have days you are to overwhelmed and you just veg out on the couch.

Kathi - Hi Meg!
I’ve been following for a while, before Annie started school. Do you ever worry or had any problems putting your life online?

Kathy - OK, here it is … my BIG question … I really, really, really, really want to start something similar to your craft weekends here in CT … probably on a MUCH smaller scale at first but it’s just a HUGE dream of mine. How did you get it all started? How did you find sponsers, find people to come, etc ….
My house is WAY too tiny for a whole weekend thing – but maybe I could do it in a rented hotel space or just start with a ‘craft day’ to start … please help! =)
Kathy

Jenn - I hope you don’t mind a few questions. I know you said don’t make it awkward, so I’m just asking because you said I could..hee 🙂 I’ve been on the CraftWeekend wait list for almost 3 years. I know you said it was a lottery, but how exactly do you pull the names? How’s Pam? Do you exercise everyday or do you rest on the weekends? Thanks for sharing your life. I love how God helped me find you and I draw such inspiration from your blog and you.

lacey - I would love to hear about/see pics of a normal day for you. as a fellow mama & creative, seeing how your days flow would be fun.

Sami Jo - So here it is – all official and schtuff – how do you juggle your walk with the Lord and focusing on getting healthy. I’ve found with almost ALL of my friends that once they start working out – that is ALL they talk about. ALL they think about. And I’ve mentioned to you, that I think you do this quite well. I am incredibly unhealthy and I realize this – so maybe that is why I notice them chatting so much about being and getting healthy – because I’m not and I feel bad about that — feel guilty. … I just want to get healthy and not have it consume my everything. … that’s for Jesus, ya know? And juggling your business and your family…? What are your best tips/advice, girlly? Thanks!!

Lynda M. - Hi Meg! I would love to know what you eat on a average day and what type of exercise you are doing because you look fabulous!!

Carrie - Hi Meg,

My question… do you ever feel panicked that you have such a large following? I question myself a lot, and I wonder how you are so confident…

and another question… will I ever been chosen for Craft weekend? I’ve been on the list for about 4 years? 🙂

Really though, just my first question.

Holly - Planning on doing any sales in your shop in the near future? I think my kitchen needs a certain cow print.

Marsha Kern - How is Pam and her family???

Hannah - On a scale of 1-10 how hard is martas sugar detox challenge?! Annnnd on a scale of 1-10 how much did you love it?! I keep trying to convince myself to do it… How did you not cheat with kids and a husband around obviously eating sugar full foods?! Have you done it again/are you planning to?

Julie - Easy one for ya….one time you posted a pic of your morning coffee ingredients on facebook/instagram. Where did you get the nifty lil green whisk thingy you use?? 🙂

a few answers.

well…i got up today with a plan in my head.
i would go running, take a nice hot relaxing bath at the craft house
and then make Vlog answering some of your questions.
i did go for my run but then the school called and said Scott was throwing up.
so…i am stuck at home still in my stinky running clothes and i will be writing and not vlogging today.

you guys ask great questions.

let's see….

1. Did you ever convert the attic in the craft house?

nope.
we just never had the energy and the money at the same time.  :)
who knows what will happen though….we may still do it.
i have dreams for it.  Maybe a store? Maybe more work space? Maybe more bunk space? Maybe a little apartment? My running buddies suggested making it a full gym so we could workout together all year long.
and i am LOVING that idea.

2. Are you on Pinterest?

ummm….i am.
but it's the only place online that i am private….i have a fake name.
i just like having all the ideas i like in one place but not sharing what i love with everyone.
that may seem weird but… it's what i am doing and i like it that way.

3. which is your favorite camera and lens?

i have a canon 50D and the 24-70 f/2.8 Canon lens.
and that is all.
i own one lens.  :)
it works for my needs…i dream of the 70 – 200 and the 35mm….and a 5D camera body.
but for now and the past two years….just that.
nothing else.
so that is what is in my camera bag.
and by camera bag i mean my purse.  HA!

4.  How do you edit your photos?

i upload my photos into LightRoom and i use their settings to edit.
i usually bump up the exposure…the vibrance….the fill light….sharpen and that's it.

5.  what settings do you use on your camera?

i almost always shoot in AV mode.  i shoot at an ISO of 200 and at 2.8 or 3.5.  does that help?
someome asked about my settings for indoor shots in the evening…well i just try not to shoot indoors in the evening.  because i think those pictures are always bad.  So i have no settings to share for that.

i love wendy&tyler from blue lily and they have helped me immensely with understanding my camera. they have workshops where YOU can learn about your camera too. you should go.
and Ashley from Under the Sycamore has an AWESOME online class that you can learn about photography…her next course is coming up soon.

i have never felt great at explaining cameras or putting it into words but both of those blogs do it well!

6. Will you come to Washington?

yes.  :)
i would love to do that sometime….

also i was worried it was going to be raining for my run this morning and your quote went through my head Leann "once you're wet, you're wet" and had decided i was going anyway.  thankfully… it stopped before i ran.

7. where are the glasses from in the post with the happy things to look at?  And the afgans?

i found that pic of the glasses on pinterest….and it linked to martha stewart…who else? but the link was not for the pic…but i think it probably came from her site.

and the afgans linked to flikr….just plain old flikr.

that is the downside of pinterest…messed up links and not getting a real source.

8.  does having a GOOD dlsr camera make that much difference?

well…
i think i wouldn't want to go without my dslr.  But getting a dlsr won't make you take good pictures.  there is a lot more that goes into getting good photos than the camera.  instagram is great example of that.  it's figuring out the lighting, composition and your angle.  and that is where having a nice dslr camera comes in…and makes the shot clear and crisp.  where a point and shoot may have a grainier shot? possibly.
if you just want snapshots to keep your memories then a point and shoot is fine.
if you have an interest in photography…any desire to learn more….i think you need a dslr.

9. Can i get a top ten book list of your favorite books?

this is a funny question mommyjulia.
because i don't know that i have read ten books in the last ten years!
but i will share again what i have read the past few months…

i read 7 and then Interrupted….loved.
Now i am reading "A Million Miles in a Thousand Years"  and this book is making me think in ways i never have!!! it's challenging me.  it's making me do hard things.  it's so good.

i love the book Crazy Love.
i loved Calm My Anxious Heart….good for a mom.
Long Way Gone was a book to prepare for africa and it was so good.

i don't read very much….i get so distracted and i don't make time for it.

i definitely don't read fiction.
IF i am reading a book it's going to be about something that i want to learn about…change in myself…get a new direction.
and thankfully i got glasses so at least i don't fall asleep as soon as i start reading.

10. can i have your pattern for the apron? can you tell me how make all the stuff you make at craft weekend?  can you do tutorials on all those things that the craft weekenders paid for?  (i am paraphrasing here)

nope…sorry.  :)
that would not be fair to all those Craft Weekend girls at all.
but i will be selling these things in my shop someday.
and i can't wait for you girls to get your hands on them… everything takes time.
i have five kids and i am running a business so things take a long time to get done.
i wish i could snap my fingers and have my shop filled and everything done…but i just cant.

i am grateful you are patient.

11. tell us about Lauren….you never do…she is ignored….why don't you talk about her…WHY?!?
(again…paraphrasing)

lauren is 17…almost 18.  She requested quite a few years ago for me to not blog about her.
so i don't.
i love her.  she is crazy smart.  she works on the weekends.  she is an awesome volleyball player.  she wants to be a doctor.

maybe someday i will be able to talk more about what it's been like raising our first teenager but for now she doesn't want me to talk about her here.

and that is that.

12. Kirsten J asked all these at once:  do you make lists?  yes…very messy lists   Do you ever ask for help?  yes. a lot. YOU HAVE TO or you will drown.  Do you ever future trip?  i don't what that is…dreaming about the future? not much i guess.  Will Lauren go away to college?  yes she will.  we don't where yet but she will.  Did you ever have a penpal? YES! i used to write letters constantly.  when craig got home from one year of college he had TONS of letters from me.  i had two from him.  ha ha haaa.  also my sister got letters from me constantly. My grandpa and i wrote too.  i always signed my letters to him Love,  Megan the GREAT!! i would tell him my grades and about my boyfriends and my dance recitals and he would send me money for good grades and call me out on my bad ones.   my 101 year great aunt and i wrote for my entire marriage until she passed away this year. i love writing letters.  Do you ever just veg out in front of the tv? Reality tv? Or talk shows? NCIS? i do occasionally veg with tv… Parenthood of course, Office, Modern Family, Grey's Anatomy and Saturday Night Live.  NO reality tv.  i can't take it.  NO singing shows…or dancing shows…or dating shows. it makes me want to poke my eyes out.  i did like Amazing Race and Survivor…in the beginning…but not anymore. AND i miss Oprah…really really miss her show.  What blogs do you read regularly?  Julie,  Ashley, Kimberlee, Shauna, Jess, Megan, Leslie, amy, shannon, sarah, lisa and michelle just to name a few….i have over 50 more in my reader.  :)

———————————————————————————————————————–

i wish there were some pictures to go along with this post.
how about some george?

George

yes…i did just take 15 minutes and made a george collage in picmonkey.
don't judge.
just enjoy….it's easy….

there over 100 comments on that post so it will take me awhile to get through them all.

hope you made it through all those answers.

ok…i am going to make all the appointments i have been putting off forever since i am stuck at home.
you know what i mean…. dentist, eye doctor, exterminator, ob/gyn, sewing machine guy, specialist and anything else i can think of.
the part i hate more than making the appointment….GOING to the appointments!

wish me luck.

Penny Smith - You handed me your camera and asked me if I “back focused” and I froze… then I read this-I too shoot in AV (and do the “focus and shift” (that made me think of “bend and snap” from legally blonde. Ha!)… though I also have the 50mm f1.8 (it’s $100) for those inside shots you speak of! 🙂 I have a Tamron lenses when the reviews had little difference (yet hundreds of dollars less) so that is how I have more than one. (28-75 f2.8, 17-50 f2.8, and 70-300 (but that came with the camera-and isn’t a fixed f). I think I used the 50mm and dialed the AV for my first couple years of my rebel, and even a lot at first with my 50D a couple years back (Karen Russel influenced-but I am still in LOVE with this lens!!)
OK-I’m babbling… I was happy to hear you edit with lightroom… cuz I was thinking that Blue Lily only uses photoshop and would basically expect everyone should too (regarding the workshop), so I would be lost on it from the get go)… good to know…
🙂

amber reece - HAHAHAHA! Loved all your responses and the collage of George! FUN! Your blog always brightens my day! Thanks for posting about Jen Hatmaker too, just got finished reading both the interrupted and 7 books and LOVED them! God Bless You and your Sweet Family!!!! xoxoxo

Michael Kors Monogram - Via artikolo estas bone skribita Yeah,

Tere - To think, you answered some of my questions when I didn’t even ask any. And you are coming to Washington? This “Washington” is coming to see you soon!!

shauna - i really love adam too.
but, is my marriage stable?
i’ll have to think about that….

shauna - get out.
you bragger.

shauna - oh gosh! good call on the george collage. that is a real gift.

megan@contentedsparrow - my only comment…..
george.
i die.

Kim Barlow - I love you…thanks for sharing!

cassidynoga - I read “A Million Miles…” a while back. It sticks with you, for always. It was a wonderful book and I have hit many of my friends over the head with it so they would read it. They always do and then we gush about how great it was and how it relates to our lives. I’m a writer so it was twice as rewarding.
I just wanted to share that you won’t forget this book easily! (:

Jeannine - Haha love the George collage. You’re awesome!
Thanks for answering some of our questions! And I think it’s wonderful you’re respecting Lauren’s wishes about her privacy.
If you go to Washington State, I’ll drive down from Vancouver to buy you a cup of coffee and maybe go for a run 🙂

Su@TheIntentionalHome - Oh I never thought of having a fake name on Pinterest. You are brillant!!! I so wanted Pinterest to create a way to have some boards private. . .you know for research I am doing, future blog posts, etc. But now I know how to do that. Oh, thanks for sharing that!!!

Su@TheIntentionalHome - Me too. . plus I am a faster reader than I am a video watcher 🙂

Karen - For those asking about the flower glasses, they are old sour cream jars found fairly easily in antique stores (I have no idea where your picture is from 🙂 ). I have lots of them. They are really fun! Well, except for the fact that you should really wash by hand and not by dishwasher to preserve the integrity of the flowers!

Amy - Hey Meg, regarding Question #7…the afgans…I totally knew those afgans the second I saw them! I have pinned them, swooned over them and even hooked up a couple of her patterns for my own collection. They are part of a beautiful handcrafted and well loved collection by Lucy of Attic24. She is a sweet bloggy friend from England. If you or any of your readers are “happy hookers” {as in CROCHETERS}! Check out her Attic24 blog! Just wanted to help give credit where credit is due.

Kori - So I had a fake name on Facebook in the beginning and then my friend made fun of me. I TOTALLY wanted a fake on on Pinterest because I also wanted to be private with the things I loved. I went ahead with my real name and it’s still weird to me when my friends start following me there. Not such a big deal with strangers, though. Go figure. Maybe I worry my friends will think me crazy for having as many pins as I do. 😉
I LOVE GEORGE. In fact I’m watching “Out of Sight” right now. 🙂 And I don’t think twice about you spending 15 minutes making a collage. In fact it doesn’t sound like very much time to peruse pics of him.
HA!

Leslie @topofthepage - I always think of you now when I watch Parenthood since last year you threw down for Team Adam. As you know, I’m on Team Crosby. Which is maybe why you have a stable marriage and mine, well, keeps me on my toes :). Somehow, I know that’s just where God wants us too…

Jenn - LOVE the fake name! I so am going to do this too! Thanks for the idea!!!

mommyjulia - You answered my question!!! Yay! Thanks, Meg! 6 books is better than 10, anyway 😉 Loved your answer about Lauren- she seems like a pretty awesome young lady. Anywho, I need to go purchase some books and get reading. Thanks again for taking the time to answer me!

Tiffany - Oh Meg, you crack me up. Your “It makes me want to poke my eyes out” comment was so true! Nice little Q&A… It’s fun getting to know you better!

Andrea - Thank you for sharing!! And thanks for the eye candy. I have another question- do you think you will ever stop blogging? I love reading about your life. You’re so real and honest too. Love that. I would be sad if you did, because I am not attached to you and your family! Is that weird? Please dont ever stop!

Kelly - Go you with a fake name on pinterest!! LOVE IT! I like my privacy from time to time too. Is it funny that my pinterest “fake name” is totally tied to my blog and I don’t care about that but I didn’t want to put my real name? hmm . . . have a great one! Oh and do you ever go see what people have pinned from your blog? I’ll bet there is a lot. I know I myself have pinned stuff from your craft room (before it became the whole craft house) as inspiration as I continue to create my craft room and the whole reason I came to your blog right now is to look back at bathroom pics and pin as a bathroom remodel just *might* get to be in the works soon. Trying not to get my hopes up and remember to the upheaval that would come with it. Kelly

Amy - Thanks for the George…what a wonderful way to end Monday!!!

ginny - Thank you for typing it out, and not vlogging it. (even though you maybe seemed a tad annoyed with some of the questions lol). I don’t like to watch videos. I’m usually on the couch with laptop while hubby watches tv. He doesn’t want to listen to what I’m doing. So I would so much rather read that watch videos. 🙂 JMO 🙂

Lisa - Its funny to me that people would think Lauren is ignored or question you not sharing much about her here. Anyone who knows teens would understand that most of them want their privacy and space. From your blog you seem like a great mom. Not perfect but loving, purposeful and invested. 🙂 btw this post was fun to read. And keep your pinterest secret. You deserve that!!

Anne - I love/hate that you’ve got a fake name on Pinterest. Completely respect your privacy, and think its quite clever to have a fake name, but its killing me to know you’ve pinned some amazing ideas that I don’t have access to. Ha! 🙂

Jocelyn Pascall - I really loved this post. Great answers and also, the pictures of George made me laugh out loud.

April R - Me too 🙂 Sassy, mysterious, and free
(And I think it’s funny people didn’t guess why you don’t blog about Lauren much)

Kimberlee Jost - Is this a good time for me to mention (again!) that I met George Clooney on my honeymoon? Just checking.
🙂
I love you more than I could ever love George.
For real.

Molly - I love reading your blog. You are a great example and inspiration for me. I really appreciate that you listened to Lauren and don’t blog about her. I need to remember that. Also, I totally get that you have a fake name on pinterest! sometimes you just want to keep those ideas to yourself!!!

Terri Christian - Can you get through one episode of Parenthood without crying…..cause I can’t! Terri

lc - Thank you for answering the question about Lauren. I think a lot of parents overshare on their blogs. Thank you for respecting your almost adult daughter. If Lauren wants her business on the internets, she can start her own blog!

Terrie - I will live in your apt. and clean before and after craft weekends…
of course, I may have to take full advantage of a craft house and craft until dawn each day!
So proud of you for respecting your daughter’s privacy.
Reading Crazy Love now…loving it!
I agree with you on the dslr…loving mine!
Dreaming of the 70-200 lens and the 5D…sigh
although…shooting in av confuses me.
Crazy, right?!
I’ve been shooting in manual ever since I took ashley’s course online
two weeks after I got my camera last year. She was fabulous!!
Totally recommend her online course if you are new to dslr cameras.
And you can never go wrong with a little george! Happy Monday!

SammaMichelle - Hey Meg!!! Loved the answers to the questions but I mostly wanted to tell you that the 15 minutes you spent making a George collage WAS NOT WASTED!! ;0) Love it and him and you!!!! Thanks for always reminding me to be happy!

sara @ it's good to be queen - i think you’re great. 🙂

Lisa M. - Thank you for sharing, Meg!
Love your blog!

seriously sassy mama - My sister has a super big crush on George Clooney. Pinterest is my crack. I am on the computer more than the TV. I cannot stand reality TV. I like the store idea for yur attic. I need a big old house!

happygirl - I like looking at George, I don’t like hearing him talk. 🙂 Thanks for doing a post like this. You remind me it’s the talent that cannot be bought. It has to be developed. Love it.

Angela A - Loved this post. And you should just put pictures of George on here everyday.

Alicia @ La Famille - lovely stuff! thanks for the share 🙂

Heather S. - I totally wondered if Lauren wasn’t on b/c of a request made by her! I can see that. Totally. And George, while I’m not really a fan, really does just get better and better with age. 🙂

Tiffany - cracking up. loved your answers. you really are human, nooooo? meg on pinterest: private, eh? – good.for.you! lauren wants to be private too – good for her! even stevie wonder could figure this one out. teenagers like their privacy, readers. duh. also hooray for her wanting to be a doctor, luv that – girl power!!! reality shows blow, real actors need jobs, not those clowns. ok that may have been harsh, but man some of those shows stink to high heaven. one day, craft weekend, i need/deserve/want it. i was wondering if maybe you would do a craft weekend “guest” giveaway?! just sayin, consider it, they would have to be a helper of course. i would recommend, say….myself? ha! 🙂 Happy Monday!

danielle - Oh my word! I love that you have a fake pinterest name. I would love one, it would make me feel sassy and mysterious!

Kristin S - This post is yet further proof that you are my favorite blogger! I have about 200 in my reader and am cutting more each day. Yours will only leave when you stop blogging.
Thanks for sharing Meg!
And I love that you are honoring Lauren’s request.

Amy - if you come to Washington State I want to buy you dinner!! 🙂 And go for run and I’ll show you the most beautiful mountains!!!

Kerry - Hey Meg, I’ve checked back onto your blog for most of the day – mainly because I was interested to see if you answered the question about Lauren, I’m so glad you did! My 12 year old daughter has also requested I blog ‘only if I really have to’ about her as her friends are so into Social Media and they click through to my blog posts from there – she gets a little embarrassed 🙂 So I’m so glad I’m not alone!
Great blog list too by the way – I already read Kimberlee’s, Joy’s & Lisa’s on your recommendation – I just signed up to the rest too!
Happy Monday Meg xx

my dress….

you girls are funny.
i didn't think of sourcing my date night clothes…..what was i thinking?

IMG_9595-1

the dress is from the dress barn   (moo.)
(please tell me why anyone would name a women's clothing store the dress BARN????)
i checked the website and it's not there….i got in may.
the cardi is from target of course….also in may.

the flower is from made4adoption.
YOU NEED ONE….or four.
and she needs you to get some….she's adopting and her etsy sales go to her adoption fund!
(she is going on vacation without internet soon so be patient if you have a question for her. )
IMG_9645-1

and the hot mama shoes are from PAYLESS!
🙂

and we almost had an emergency that night when i couldn't find my spanx!
i might have cancelled the whole date if i didn't have those.
they are THAT important to me.
i have had five babies living in this body don't forget.

the maxi dress i was wearing in the video (previous post) is from CATO fashions.
they don't have online shopping.
and like dress barn being that it's VERY hit or miss…..but that dress had my name on it.
IMG_9651-1

it had ties at the neck but i sewed them back as straps instead….since we don't let our daughters wear strapless dresses i figured it wouldn't be too cool for me to go to a party with them….in a strapless dress!  ha.

someone asked how tall i am.
i am 5' 7".   the heels make me very tall but i like that…..my husband is tall.
and he likes the heels so i love the heels.
if he was short….i'd wear heels for GIRLS NIGHT!

Ali left this comment:
Okay, you look sassy and ready for your big date!  I don't know how you manage to go shopping for clothes with your kids!  Please give me tips!  I've gone a little frumpy these days ( I have 3 kids) tell me how to juggle date nights and cute clothes! I want to be a cute Momma too! 🙂

ok ali….i had to think about it….

#1 – i don't take my kids shopping with me most of the time.
i do enjoy shopping though…i don't know how you women that hate going shopping ever find
       anything to wear!!!
when i used to have to take my kids shopping i gave them lots of candy.
       suckers and smarties.
it keeps them happy and quiet and me productive.

#2 – i usually pick one store because i don't have shopping DAYS i have an hour here or there.
i usually shop at Target, Old Navy, Dress Barn and CATO…..because they are easy and affordable.

#3 – i try on EVERYTHING i even remotely like.
that way i usually find something that fits and is cute.
sometimes things are really cute even if they aren't so much on the hanger.
i try on like 20+ items.

#4 – i just get one or two things usually.
one piece at a time….i have never bought a "summer wardrobe"

#5 – know your own body….use the body slimming products out there….if you think you'd need them.
they are awesome…makes a really REALLY big difference….sometimes a whole size!

……………………..don't settle for frumpy………………………………………..

tell yourself that YOU need some time for YOU and find that PRETTY girl again.

it is important as a woman and as a mom and as a wife.

it's not about how much money you spend.
it's not about labels (hello….dress barn and payless???)

taking time for you will help you feel GOOD about yourself.

moms need to feel pretty too.
WE DO!!!

and when i feel frumpy….i don't feel confident…or pretty…..

i am not saying to go shopping every day.
or to run away and look out for only you.

but take a little time out for you even if it's once a month.
to remember that you are more than a mom.
some way.
some how.
if YOU don't do it…..NO ONE will do it for you.

go one night when your husband is home from work and stay out till the stores close….and then go to B&N and read till they close too!

go with a friend and both try on everything!

go with a friend and have her be your style consultant!

take time for you or you may end up with a track suit in every color
and MOM jeans before you know it.

your husband will quickly realize you are a happier woman if you've had some time away from crazies at home….if he is supportive of that….it's a win-win…. and dont let him call/text you every ten minutes either 🙂
i've been known to turn off my phone….to be really OFF the clock from home.

AND GO ON A DATE!!!

get a sitter and GO.
eat dinner where they serve you….not ordering at a counter…but if that's all you can get….TAKE IT!!!
get REAL yummy grown up food.
get a drink if you can't stop thinking about the kids or if you feel crabby or distracted or mad.
trust me….i KNOW.
about hour into our dates i always think
"WHY don't we do this every week?!!! i love this guy so much and i NEED time with HIM"

PRIORITY.

you
and him.
do it.

🙂 goodness that was a loooooong wordy post!
can you tell i am passionate about moms not losing who they are?

i became a motivational speaker for a minute……
at least i didn't say "i live in a van down by the river!!!"
i'm going to quickly hit publish before i decide to delete this whole post.

do you have girls any other questions?

lets hear them!

clothing store - This blog is great! My mom would be so happy to read and get advice on how to dress. She’s not the most fashionable person at all. My favorite thing was the shoes I would rock the shoes.

auntie bliss - I am 49 and want to say AMEN~ no excuse for being frumpy!
You reminded me of when…ten years ago…I had my two year
old in his stroller in a dressing room w/me and LOL and good
grief…he was eating bacon and eggs that we brought with us!

christi - great “rant!” i gave this pep talk to a girlfriend the other day {even though i don’t have kids, but i work at home and the pep talk is just as necessary for a wife that works at home!}. anyhow … i told her that i order a bunch of things online and try them on at home. i always only keep a few things, but i really dislike dressing rooms and the crowds at stores. forever21 has a great selection of tops, loft {ann taylor loft} always has tons on sale {50% off all tops right now online}, old navy/gap always have good sales. makes finding clothes so much easier – plus i can see if i like a certain top with a bottom i already own!

Julia - What a great post. you are so right! and you looked beautiful by the way. I love it that you are REAL. that’s my favorite part about following your blog! I have really enjoyed following you- this is the first comment I’ve left even though I’ve been following you for probably a year. I enjoy all your crafts, projects, and your cooking stuff too! Thx!

flor - what a wonderful reminder for us moms! its so easy to lose ourselves once we become parents.. our ENTIRE day is devoted to everything house and kids related that by the time they go to sleep we are pooped and have no energy! I’ve been in a fashion funk this year and I’m still figuring out my new “style” (I came to the realization that Forever 21 should NOT be my main source for clothes.) thanks so much for this wonderful post!

Carly - So true! I always feel so much better when I take the time to put together a cute outfit (which is NOT easy at 9 weeks post partum right now!!). Thanks for the tips on shopping. With two little ones under 2 I can look at about 3 things tops at Target before it starts to fall apart. I need to get out on my own to get a few cute things! Thanks for your great words to all of us!

steph - oh, i’m so passionate about this too.
always telling women to make time for themselves…
to not lose their identities in their children.
to make sure they’re spending quality time with the hubby.
sigh… do i take my own advice?!
nope… usually not.
oh well… but i’ll keep trying and keep telling others to take care of themselves.
love this post!
you are beautiful, inside and out!
xo

Ali - Also thanks for the tip about spanx’s I’m going to make that my NUMBER 1 goal for July!
Must find some for spanx’s for my mommy tummy! 🙂
~ Ali

Ali - Thanks Meg for the great suggestions! I’m going to try squeezing in a quick hour of shopping tomorrow morning when my 2 big kids are at morning camps! Then I’ll load my pockets with little candies for Jack (2) and try on a ton of things! I’ll head to the Dress Barn and then later in the week hit a few of the other affordable stores you mentioned! 🙂 I can’t wait to start looking cute! 🙂 I love that you get a new dress here and there and don’t buy a whole summer wardrobe! That is real life and actually seems more do able time wise and money wise! Forever, your grateful Mommy friend ~ Ali (36 years, wife of 10 years and Mom to kids ages 7, 4, 2)!
Okay, as far as questions I agree with a previous posters that asked about how to add color to her home without making it look like her 4 year old daughter decorated! My house is so vanilla colored (most everything is neutral colored) and my personality is more rainbows but, I want my home to look grown up and stylish even as I add color! How do you style your home with color?
Oh one last thing…I love that butterfly canvas art project you did! My daughter, Ava Grace (4) made one too last week! So fun! This week we my 3 kids and I painted bird houses from JoAnn’s! We’re having fun doing art projects together thanks to you!
Love ya!
~ Ali

melissa erin - love.love.loved this post. i am overdue with my 5th baby now…and can’t wait to shrink a little bit, and buy me some new clothes, with shrinkage undergarmets, and turn some focus on my man 🙂 thanks for the pep talk. 🙂

Tiffany - Let the church say….AMEN….here is a favorite quote of mine, I borrowed it from Deion Sanders (Dallas Cowboys)….. If u look good, you feel good, if you feel good, you play good, if you play good, they pay good. {And pay is relative} it could mean a myriad of things, but it’s simple, TRUE and I luv it. Cheers!

Laura Phelps - It has taken me some time to get my “look” back…is IS hard with kids…
I too try on EVERYTHING
and if I have my kids, I let them CHOOSE things for me to try on
Annie ALWAYS picks the BEST things for me! too funny
my tip, since no one asked…(ha)
ALWAYS wear SOME piece of jewelry that is ME…
bracelet, earrings, anything…something that expressed who I am, even when I have no idea who that even is anymore!
and yes to date night
saves a marriage
I speak from personal experience 🙂

erlfisher - Thank goodness you did hit “publish” because it’s something we all need to hear! Mommies push themselves aside to take care of everyone else so often – and it’s nice to hear that there are others who struggle with this as well. I am going to schedule a date with my husband straight away!!

Jen - Meg, this was such a GREAT post and exactly what I needed to read today. It’s so easy to be the last priority when you’re married with kids, but it is so important to care for ourselves! And I feel the exact same way on date nights, I love this guy, why don’t I do this more often?! Thank you for inspiring me to take more time!

Mindy Harris - oh i meant to say “it saddens me to hear that some of my friends have NOT been on a date in months…”

Mindy Harris - we have the exact same frame of mind, meg. it saddens me to hear that some of my friends have been on a date in months, or even years. shawn and i just returned from our 8-yr anniv celebration–a weekend in ks city where we could shop and eat til our heart’s content.
and i just bought a dress for it (and a wedding), too!
the brand?
stop staring!
(seriously)
love your heart. love the voice you are/have for women. i’m SO THERE with you.

jill - I just ‘heart’ you! No clue how I ever stumbled across this blog. Glad I did!

becky - meg! thanks SO much for this TIMELY post! what do you suggest for mommies of itty bitties who are COVERED with spit up, baby food, cheerios in their hair, {and other things…} but still want to look hot for their man when he gets home from his “grown up job”? i just find it hard to get motivated when i know my clean self will last for exactly 2 seconds!!!! LOVE your sense of humor!!!!!

Jessie - I love your personality, you seem great with people. Did you ever used to have a job that you went to everyday? Or do you think you will ever take a full time job (besides mom) or maybe open a studio some day??

Sandy - Thanks for answering my question about how tall you are. Makes me feel like I got your autograph or something!! 🙂
Great post and great tips. Thanks for everything you do…as a wife, mom, daughter, sister, friend, christian, & blogger. You’re the best.

beth - Oh, I am SO glad you hit publish!! You’re so right–how easy it is forget that we are *women* and *wives*, not just a mom. I love being a mom, but if I don’t get up, fix my hair, throw on some make up, and actually get dressed for the day….I honestly feel yucky. And, how can I be happy and feel yucky at the same time?
Thank you for sharing such wise words! It was a great reminder to me, and I really hope it hit home with some moms out there who need encouragement in their womanhood!
beth

Ashley c - We are having our 6th this fall…and date night has become so important…there are days that go by that we feel like two people living together in this little house with a hoard of kiddos…and then we take a few minutes and we like,” oh yeah, I know who you are. I love you so much and wow, you are still the same person I feel in love with…” We hate the circle, but gosh those moments totally rock! Thank you for the reminder!!!

Leah - You inspired me, Meg! I went down the street to my local Dress Barn, which I’ve never shopped in before. And I found two pairs of flattering slacks and three tops! And the tummy slimming feature — AWESOME! It feels great to have a few new nice things to wear now. Thanks for the Dress Barn tip! Can’t wait to go again (but I have to after what I spent today).

Bobbie - I bought a dress last night at Macy’s and paid more than I normally would. I’m glad I bought it since I didn’t have any dresses to wear right now but I also realized that I’m not fancy and I’m not frumpy. I’m simple and plain and I like it. My husband loves my simple ways. He didn’t like the dress and I got the biggest comment when I came home and put on my jeans and plain tshirt. Sometimes I wish I dressed fancier or remembered jewelry but really I’m happiest when I am just me. I do think you looked super foxy on your date. 🙂

Kristin S - Oh, Meg, please post more run-on posts. This is one I would have hit delete before publish and I’m so glad you didn’t!
I agree with so much that you said and I’m not even married or a mom. So many friends fit that category of heading down frump-road and I try to help rescue before they get too far. One major thing is taking them bra shopping! I love it.
Love your soap box. Keep em coming.

Erin Whitney - Okay, here’s a question. I LOVE LOVE LOVE all the colors in your house. I’ve tried to incorporate more colors into our apartment (in the process of buying a house, so I’m obviously stuck on decorating right now) but everytime I try to color the place up, I feel like my 4 year old decorated instead of me. What’s your advice on making our living space color-friendly without looking like a mess of primary colors?

Lisa H. - It took us several years to prioritize a weekly date night, but now we rarely miss it. (And we still have kids that need to be babysat, but now we have built-in babysitters.) Tomorrow is our 29th anniversary!

Kerry - I soooooooooooo needed this Meg!! had a date night on Monday night, which i’d bought a cute dress for, put the dress on – looked HUGE – couldnt find my granny panties, so i threw a complete strop and threw EVERYTHING out my cupboard in a fit of rage. (its still there….whoops) im going shopping for ONE hour TOMORROW. thanks Meg – you totally rock 🙂 xx

Laine Chambers - Awesome post. You totally hit the nail on the head. It is SO important to look good for your hubby. And to spend time with him, without kids!! I’m preggo with #4 right now and try really, really hard to never look like the “frumpy pregnant and barefoot in the kitchen” lady. And another thing I’ve learned…when your hubby tells you that you’re beautiful, just believe it!
I love your blog and am so glad I found it. =)
My question: With five kids and a blog, do you have a strict schedule for yourself and your home? What all do your children help with?

amie - p.s. — i very much miss all the aforementioned stores. boo. 🙁

amie - Meg. Meg….you are a delight. All the way to Germany, your rainbow-self brightens my day. Every time. 🙂 And oh, I’ve lived in a van — down by the river…but only for a week. It didn’t make me manic — but I think it did my husband. 🙂

Short, Sweet Season - 1) I wish you were my next door neighbor because you are THAT MUCH FUN. 2) You said to ask, so: Did you and your husband make a dedicated commitment to you being largely a work from home/stay at home mom (I know you also have a photography business), or did it just happen to work out that way? Were there times when it seemed like you might have to work outside the home, and if so, how did you make it work?

jill - thank you for this post! i needed this! (actually, you might want to keep repeating this info to us because we are moms and will get busy with our kids and forget everything you said in about five minutes. ha!) you are too cute!

Toni :O) - I love you and I love this post…thanks for making me force myself to be a priority and start loving myself again. You are so awesome, I wish I lived next door to you, I think we’d have tons of fun!

Toni :O) - I love you and I love this post…thanks for making me force myself to be a priority and start loving myself again. You are so awesome, I wish I lived next door to you, I think we’d have tons of fun!

momma of 4 - I like it.

Sarah - Amen Sister!

Lindsey@ Piecefully Home - so true…as much as we don’t like to admit it, men are wired as visual creatures. that’s how god made them. my husband appreciates it when i take the time to look nice. i had three babies, two of which were huge! it took a toll on my body and now i have a nice large diastasis recti that makes me look permanently 5 months prego, but my husband thinks i’m beautiful! but i can’t let that big mummy tummy keep me out of pretty clothes just because i don’t look like i did when we were first married. it’s not about having the perfect body, it’s about taking pride in ourselves.
no husband wants to be greeted everyday by a wife in dirty smelly sweats, no child wants to have their mama pick them up from the bus stop looking like she rolled out of bed in the afternoon. when i look nice it shows my family that i care about myself and that i care enough about them. if i was going to meet someone famous i’d look nice…so how much more important are my family? ok, i’ll step off my soapbox for now…

Amy Lynne - You ROCK! Thank you!

Jenna - I can’t wait until this baby comes out so I can start wearing my clothes again! I think that in itself is going to make me feel less frumpy!
Jenna

Heather Crawford - AMEN to the Spanx..I won’t wear a dress without them 🙂
and yes, working on not sinking into frumpiness…
and what someone else said..still dressing cute and all even if I’m not my ideal weight right now!!! Took a long time to get over that..

elma - Oh I just love your dress:) Well after eight kids my body will never look good:( I wish there was nice clothes for the bigger gal!!!

georgia - No questions from me, but you look amazing for a mum who had 5 kids! I’m forever trying to make my mum find time to buy nice clothes, on the cheap of course! But she rarly gives in an tries to buy me stuff instead, I practically have to throw clothes at her and make her try them on LOL

Yolanda - love this post! my fave part of your date night ensemble were your shoes! i do have a question. i don’t know much about sewing so i’m curious how you went about sewing the straps onto the back of that maxi dress? did you have to measure carefully? how did you sew it so that it would be secure? i would be horrified if the straps broke off and the top fell down. thanks for any tips!

Jenny B. - Thank you, thank you, thank you! I needed to hear that. All of it. 🙂

Amy Slavik@ Little For A Little While - Aww, thanks for the words of encouragement! My honey and I went on a date tonight…only our second time since having baby #2 in February. It was be so worrisome to leave an infant, but man, did we have a great time out!! Cheers!

Michelle - Oh, Meg! how I love to read your blog! you are awesome!!! you looked adorable for your date night!
Two questions for ya: tell me about your silver bracelets you are wearing. They are beautiful!! Also, what spanx are you talking about? I am a mother of three and 41 years old, any helpful tips, I am ready to hear it!
p.s. my daughter and I made the pumpkin choc. chip cookies and the Pizza Pretzels. yum to both! Thanks for your blog! It is a joy to read!

Holly - so promise me that if we ever meet you will leave your heals at home and I will wear mine. I am at least a head shorter than you!ha! I do love a good pair of “big girl” shoes. and I love payless. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE forever 21…..even though I am in my 30s…who cares, right?

Oberheu.wordpress.com - I love dress barn too…and think it’s a horrible name for a store. Makes me hesitate to tell people that’s where I got something:). And I love Angie’s “one different thing” idea! I’ve been doing this for a while. I have also found that if I shop often for quick trips I do better. A quick stop while running errands can really pan out. And the more I stop the more opportunity to find something great at an awesome price!

Angie - I used to hate shopping…several things changed that and now I kind of enjoy it, but the best advice I ever got was from my mom (also a woman who doesn’t like shopping)…
…try on one thing you wouldn’t normally pick out for yourself. Every time I go shopping I try on one item I wouldn’t normally buy. Some of them a great, some of them are awful. Some of my favorite clothes are the one “different” thing I picked out to try on.

Valerie @ Chateau A La Mode - My family wants to know why I’m laughing out loud while I’m on the computer…I’m laughing because I’m a mom and I 100% AGREE with you. You go girl and tell the mommies out there how important it is to remember who WE are too! P.S. You did look way cute and sassy.

Lisa - Yes, yes and yes!! Great post. I think I am starting to embrace my “I’ve had 4 kids body” and may have to invest in some body slimming stuff instead of feeling horrible trying to lose the weight and constantly failing! 🙂

Michelle - your blog makes me giggle and smile!

Michele - You look great! Thanks for sharing all of this. Sometimes blogging just gives me a bad case of the wants when I see someone in something cute, then I realize that it cost a small fortune. It’s not all about labels–I’m not living in NYC or LA. I live in the middle of nowhere in TX. No one cares who the designer is! It’s more about feeling confident and good about yourself. I appreciate the realness of what you shared. The spanx part had me rolling!

julia - you rock BABE!

BriBedell - Amen!!

Suzanne - Everyday life goes by so fast that I DO forget that I am still a hot momma and my husband is still my hottie man! We didn’t go out this evening but, we did grill a few steaks and put on some good music and just chat it up…who knows where this will lead(wink)!
p.s. heading to Payless tomorrow!

sara's art house - Love the outfit! Now I need to go get some spanx! 🙂

Kat - *Nods* as a Mum of 4 this is so so so true!
Wise words indeed, although it is tricky getting a babysiter at times, which is probably why we only just went on a date last weekend for the first time in 6 months!!!
We saw Bridesmaids and my Hubby also thought it was hilarious!
Loved that movie.

Nina - I love this Meg! I’ve totally been on a journey to rediscover myself and my style as a mom. It’s actually turned my blog into a style blog. I would love to talk to you about sharing this message…I know so many women need to hear this!
http://www.mommagoround.com
mommagoround@gmail.com

Alicia @ la famille - I looooove this post! Thanks for giving us all the go ahead to do something for ourselves. Sometimes mamas feel so guilty after we take time for US! and me and my banker went on a date last night. First date in forever! It was so nice 🙂

hershey's moma {amy} - Okay, the mom jeans link… hilarious, just that. 🙂

tara - i love this post.
i wear yoga pants and tshirts or excercise clothes all day most days bc I work out first thing every morning….BUT, I have a closet full of cute clothes that make me feel great about myself, and I wear them anytime and every chance I get. ESPECIALLY on HOT dates with my man!

Monica - Great Chris Farley reference!! 🙂

colleen from Alabama - ps. how do you know what size to buy?

colleen from Alabama - I just turned 46 TODAY! I got married at 32,first baby at 35 and second at 37… the body is now showing some wear and tear AND i now have a muffin top! PLEEEAAASSEE help me! What spanx item will make this puff go away while not making my thighs look huge! 🙂 I’m not a big girl – size 6/8 but the muffin top is killin me!

Courtney Hohimer - Today, I was at our MOPS retreat planning for our coming year and we were talking about our blog friends – women out there in blog land who our lives aren’t complete if we haven’t looked at their site that day, even if there isn’t anything new. You were totally on my list, you and Julie (Joy’s Hope) and Dana (Made), that was my list. The three of you are so super awesome, and I love how REAL you and Julie are (yes, I call you by name, I hope that doesn’t creep you out). This post right here, is exactly why!! I wish wish wish that you could come to San Antonio, just to speak at our MOPS meeting about this very thing (or one of the hundred other reasons why I think you’re a totally awesome person and so very real and authentic).
Anyway, I just wanted to say a quick, thanks for being in the business of being an awesome, real, and authentic picture of a Godly woman, wife and mom! Seriously, you’re an inspiration and your blog is always a bright spot in my day. 🙂

mary - guess I should proof my comment next time! wow, look at all those typos. Maybe I need spanx and typing lessons.

Kimberlee - I love this post…
Except for the fact that I’m home with two kids on this Saturday night while my man is working and now I wish I were on a date…or shopping. 🙂

mary - So maybe tis is too personal be I have never worn spanx and and about to have baby number three. I think I am about due for some. After the birth of course. What product is you must have?

Sabrina - Thank you for posting this because I needed to hear it! I just had my first child 2 months ago and i am feeling so very frumpy. 🙁 This coming from the girl who was voted Most Likely to Make a Fashion Statement in High School! Thankfully my husband is so supportive of me getting out of the house, dressing up and having some time… but i feel so very guilty for wanted to leave and get away. I love being a wife and mother (especially since I had to wait until my mid 30s to get it) But I need to get over the guilt and take time for me too.

Denissa - Amen to everything!! I too have realized just in the last year how important date nights and alone time are. Up until recently my husband & I had never gone on date nights, and my oldest is almost 10!

Chrissie grace - I have to remind myself that I deserve to feel pretty and pampered too!
Thanks for validating that!
xo

Quinn - Very cute! I have one question I have always wondered… do your kids/husband read your blog?!
And also, am I the only one that has YouTube as an icon for your page? Strange…

Kristin - This is all so true and good to be reminded of! I have a 7 month old and just went on my first date with my hubby since he was born because I breastfeed. It was wonderful! And I totally agree on getting dressed so you don’t feel frumpy. But I also have one kid so it’s ,uch easier for me currently. Love your blog by the way.

Flower Patch Farmgirl - Oh, I like you on a soapbox. And I like your hair. Very much. And your dress! It’s dumb that people shop at expensive stores when there’s stuff as cute as that in a strip mall. Moo. I have never shopped at Dress Barn. But now I might. I hope they send you a royalties check.
You know what I would love? To rock a double date with you and your C and my C.
Oh my word – what if we were awkward?
bye.

happygirl - Wow, you are right. You dress cute, too. I was told I dress like a Deatheater (ala Harry Potter). All black from head to toe. I don’t know why. I guess it suits me. 🙂 *blacksmoke*

Amanda - amen sister!
thanks for the motivational speech. i needed that!

Sara Torbett - Love your blog! I am a new mom and needed this reminder, already :). I read your blog often and enjoy seeing a mom who has their own personality and interests, plus is a great mom. I want that. 🙂

Kim - I could not agree more.
We have a schedule in our house: Wednesday night is MY night, Thursday is my husband’s, and Friday is OUR night. We usually stay home and celebrate after the kids are in bed – it doesn’t matter – we are dedicating time to each other.
I love my life.

Blissfulblooms.blogspot.com - Preach it SISTAH!! I have four kids and the oldest is 7- I am just now learning how important mommy time is. It doesn’t take a lot of moola, just a little time. I just read a quote off a blog (sorry- can’t remember which one-ugh) “She decided to become the person she always imagined.” Amen and amen! YOU are such a blessing and I see a future for you of motivational speaking! Come to MT and I’ll pack our church for you! Blessings!

Carrie - I HEART Cato!!!!!!! 🙂

Ashley - Thanks so much for this! My third baby is seven months now and I have been in the “when I lose all the baby weight” stage for way too long! I’m tired of feeling frumpy and ready to look confident and stylish again, no matter the size! Thanks for the reminder!

amanda - Just fyi. Your outfit is ADORABLE. I absolutely love it. Love love love. Will def be buying a flower.

heather - i just love you and your passion for not letting us wear mom jeans.

Val - agree w/ all said…you are just cute. 🙂

evan - meg! ditto everything you said in this post! my neighbor kept my kids yesterday and i spent the whole afternoon shopping. i got to take my time at barnes & noble looking at hairstyle magazines for like an hour! i came home a whole different person. it really helps me to feel like me again.
and date nights are a MUST! i like that our kids see that we go on dates. they need to know their parents are still in LOVE! 🙂
