IMG_2356
winner:   “Kristina – Love it all. Especially Persimmon bracelet!”

Kristina… i need you to email me your address so i can send you these beauties.
my email is in the sidebar under my (very outdated) profile photo.

🙂

SUPERskinnysideways
and now… back to the regularly scheduled programming.

last summer talby and annie started on their first quilts.
quilts take a lot of time and after we made what felt like a million strips… we lost steam.
IMG_7768(pp_w775_h775)
(but look how cute and little the girls are in these pics from last summer!)IMG_7791(pp_w775_h775)IMG_7744(pp_w775_h775)
SUPERskinnysideways
so now… a year later…. TALBY FINISHED the front of her quilt!!!

IMG_2172IMG_2190IMG_2197IMG_2198IMG_2199
i mean… have you ever seen anything cuter?!
all the colors!!!
it’s just plain dreamy.

are far as HOW we are making this quilt… we are making it up as we go along.
it won’t be perfect but we don’t really care about that.
🙂
we care about learning to love sewing.

we use the SINGER Heavy Duty Sewing Machine for all of our sewing projects.
and we use these at the Craft House too.

81Maa6mLwUL._SL1500_
the girls can thread it themselves.
it sews very smoothly and it is EASY to use!
i highly recommend this machine!
it’s $136 on Amazon with Prime Shipping.

i think that is a total score!

IMG_2194
as soon as Talby finished Annie asked “Can i sew today Mom?”

i am so happy they like sewing!!!

we are still deciding on what to put on the back and how we will “quilt” it.

SUPERskinnysideways

ALSO… if you are looking for great books to encourage your girls to sew or just to inspire them… i highly recommend these two books!
IMG_2798

We Love to Sew: 28 Pretty Things to Make: Jewelry, Headbands, Softies, T-shirts, Pillows, Bags & More
and  We Love to SewBedrooms: 23 Projects Cool Stuff for Your Space

We have both of these books and they are REALLY good.
they are written for the kids – really great photography, styling and projects.
it’s written so they feel like it’s THEIR book… not their mom’s book.

and when i went just to find the links for those two books i saw she has TWO more books!
i immediately ordered them both because DUH!
Annabell Wrigley is a rockstar.

We Love to SewGifts: Fun Stuff for Kids to Stitch and Share

We Love to CraftChristmas: Fun Stuff for Kids 17 Handmade Fabric & Paper Projects

02da98ac7daa39e66ea2a74f343b5b5e

my mail box is going to be so happy this week!

i am making curtains for a bedroom at the Craft House… the fabric is a bright yellow damask!
swoony.
are you making anything right now? sewing or not sewing?

let’s hear it!

Loto - I love that you are teaching your girls to sew! Talby’s quilt is beautiful!

Southern Gal - I’m sewing curtains and a seat cushion for my daughter-in-law’s kindergarten class room. Next are clothes for my grandchildren and a quilt for my son. I love the scrap quilt. She did an amazing job!

Maria - So so cute! Guess I need to stop pinning quilts and just make one already!

Alicia - That is adorable! So happy! My daughter and I just started on a duvet for her bed. The husband and other kids are going out of town tomorrow and leaving us to makeover her very first room to herself. I think I’m as excited as she is!

Sue - Sewing. Always sewing. I make comforters for relief work around the world, for domestic violence victims, for people who lost belongings due to natural disasters, always to give away for a variety of causes. Talby’s comforter is amazing! She’s got a good eye for bright and fun!

I knot my comforters using something called the Decatur knot. It leaves an X on the top, and one stitch showing on the back. I enjoy that process more than struggling with a bed-size comforter through my sewing machine!

Erica - With my older kids I thought a shopping cart cover was a waste of time and money, but my youngest puts her mouth allover everything so I whipped up one out of fleece. Now she’s standing up in her crib and so I’m making a crib rail cover

Kathi - I’m going to order these for myself. I took sewing in Jr.High School a million years ago, and haven’t done much on a sewing machine since. I think these books would be just my speed 😀

KWolff - I love the colors of Talby’s quilt. It is very fun and looks like something that will be well loved for years to come. Thanks for the tips on the books. I have a daughter (14) that loves to sew but she gets so discouraged when things don’t work out right. I think one/some/all of these books would be good motivators for her to get back into the swing of sewing and actually have fun with it.

Jen J - Right now I am working on making a purse for my friend and I also have an order for a checkbook cover. I plan to work on making that today 🙂

My daughter recently learned to sew. She is taking a quilting class right now from a lady that goes to our church. I get to tag along to the classes and I have learned so much! I have never wanted to quilt before, but I do now 🙂

jen - Her quilt is awesome! I’m working on a quilt as well. Finally cut in to a bundle of Joel Dewberry fabric I bought about 5 years ago.

Lisa Perry - I am re-doing my little Jack and Jill bathroom…I aways buy two shower curtains and turn one into a sink skirt and curtains to match the actual shower curtain. Going with blues and greens and attempting painted stripes on the walls.

Julie - When I’m not working, gardening, cooking or reading, sewing is what I do. Currently I am making a scrappy sampler quilt – no real plan as yet, Here is a progress shot of the blocks I’ve made so far. Fingers crossed that when it is finished it looks as good in real life as it does in my head.

http://justjulielou.blogspot.co.nz/2015/07/wednesday-wip.html

Very impressed you are making more curtains – I have never attempted those.

phyllis - I love her quilt top!!!
Want! 😀
I am about to try Shibori… tie dye in indigo …probably on pillowcases to start since I snagged some at Goodwill.

Becky Kindel - I sewed fabric bunting and paper bunting for the kitchen and craft room in the new craft retreat I’m building!

KirstenP - I got the Singer Sewing Machine you mentioned for my birthday. I’ve been checking out quilting pages on facebook for pattern ideas and how-tos to make my very first quilt. I found a pattern I like and I’m tweaking it with a couple of my own design and fabric ideas.
On facebook’s Quilting Club page I saw this awesome quilt that reminded me of your love of color. It’s too difficult for me now but someday I plan to make it. http://www.craftsy.com/supplies/riley-blake-basic-variety-star-bright-quilt/14787?ext=FB_QC_PP_Ecomm_Activity_Ecomm_Purchase_14787_20150810_1400&utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=Social%20Engagement&utm_campaign=Quilting%20Club-Ecomm%20Activity&initialPage=true

Amy Woods - What a beautiful, happy, lovely quilt! Absolutely perfectly imperfect. I love it!

I am currently crocheting a little beach bag that I started before our trip to the beach earlier this summer and didn’t finish. 😉

And, I’m working on a rag t-shirt quilt for a friend. It’s kinda giving me hives because I am now at the sewing stage, and sewing on t-shirts is making me nervous. I’m just going to have to jump right in!

Love that you sew with your girls.

Jackie O M - Just back from a week at Club Fred ~ spent with our grandpetites.
We had great fun doing projects. Petit #1 made a request to knit a new scarf (she began knitting at Granny Camp several years back). For this scarf, we both had to learn the seed stitch ~ not at all difficult. Petit # 2, the Vegetarian, wanted to make noodles by hand. And pesto. And Caesar salad ~ which she did at table;awesome. Petit #3 wove a small pillow on a cardboard loom, round and round as opposed to back and forth, no seams. He also learned a four strand round cord to use as a handle. On our field trip to Shipshewana, we scored knitting looms. Petites #2 & #3 along with granny are loom knitting! And paper banners!

GB Jost - Our Girl will be sewing her first apron!

Jody - LOVE the quilt!!!!

Books to inspire girls AND boys!!!! Boys love to sew too. :))

kim - After making lots and lots of headbands for my little girl, I’ve taken the ever so slightly more complicated step to…pillowcase dresses 🙂 Slowly, but surely, making my way into a hobby of imperfect sewing! Love your blog!

Nikki - I’m crocheting a shawl right now, but looking at Talby’s quilt is making me so happy I think I will go home and start cutting up my old stash of fabric to make one for myself!

loving the deck…

since the beginning of july i have spent every evening (and morning) out on the deck.
all the heart eyes!
IMG_2171SUPERskinnysideways
so this was our deck….BEFORE.
last summer and this summer until the beginning of july.
it was so depressing.
literally.
i would go out there and feel cruddy.
IMG_0493
i started with flowers.
i went to find some… and in july in kansas it’s not an easy task.
Just like with most places you are supposed to start in late spring.
but i was not motivated then… i was motivated now!
so i started at home depot.
they had Pentas and basically everything else was dead – SO DEAD.
so i bought the pentas.
then i went to Menards… they had cladiums.
then to Lowes… they had black eyed susans and petunias.
then walmart… they had vinca plants and zinnias.
then to my local nursery and got all the vines and draping plants and filled in with more vinca.
i went to world market and found cushions 50% off because it’s JULY!
and target for the fun picnic blanket that i turned into a tablecloth.
IMG_0445
i found this old cornice at an antique store in our town and thought “YES! This will help with character!”
IMG_1639IMG_2203
craig hung it up for me the same day!
IMG_2205
i blogged about our white table HERE.

the lights were also from target in the home & garden department.
to hang the lights…i could not find gutter clips in july either.
they claim they are seasonal (christmas) but i claim that is dumb… because it is.
after much discussion with a dude at Ace Hardware we decided that maybe some heavy wire would work?
and it did!
i bent wire into S shapes and bent it over my gutters and then strung the lights through.
i would have hung more but i didn’t think we had a ladder tall enough and craig wasn’t home to show me where the tall ladder was…
🙂
IMG_1610IMG_2150
with all those cute details you barely notice the gigantor speakers right? (ha ha ha)
those speakers are not attractive but they ARE effective.
they are awesome for our movie nights.
maybe i will paint them?!  i mean why not?! recover the black speaker with cute fabric?
anything would look better than giant black speakers.
but like i said… they work great! so they stay.
that old metal office cabinet i also found at an antique shop.
i want to paint it bright yellow but i haven’t had time yet.
and it weighs a TON so i have to be very ready because the men in family won’t want to move it twice.

i really like having mirrors in outside spaces!
they reflect more light and the views are always pretty.

IMG_0591
IMG_0482
i had LOTS of containers from when we redid the patio at the farm house.
(it was soooo cute and i miss that yard a bunch!)
almost all of my containers are old and junky that were other things originally… lard cans, galvanized buckets, trash cans, a bread box and a wash tub.
i bought a few BIG bags of dirt and got busy planting every container i had.
IMG_0563
this white cabinet has been everywhere in all the houses.
it originally was an old built-in in our Illinois house basement.
it came with the green glass knobs!
for awhile it was annie’s dresser, then held our games.
it was in my craft room… the living room… my bedroom…
and now it’s on the deck!

and i am guessing some one is going to ask how i hung things up on the siding?
well… i tried to find siding clips and couldn’t.
so i decided to just hang it like i would inside… and i put a nail in the wall.
that is making most of you cringe and pass out but it’s not aluminum siding… it’s wood.
and life is about more than having perfect siding.
so i did it.
the end.
ALSO… the small signs are hung with 3M command strips.
which could be one of the worlds best inventions ever.

IMG_0557
having chalkboards outside make for silly stuff that the kids feel like writing… right now it says “Justin Bieber 4 Life” and no one even likes Biebs anymore here so it’s just funny what will be written here.
the rainbow pillow cases were from IKEA.
the polka dot cushions are from Target… i just ordered even more.
IMG_1620
animals
everybody loves the deck… even the grasshoppers.
🙂
IMG_2119IMG_2170
every morning i wake up and have my coffee out here.
it went from the worst space in the house to AWESOME.

and i trash picked that white iron lounge chair over 10 years ago.
🙂

SUPERskinnysideways

Becky Kindel - I love how you’re able to make spaces so colorful, inspiring, and inviting. And that lounge chair is the best thing ever!

Lori - Meg- I would live on your patio if I could. The transformation is amazing! I just love it!

Your blog was one of the first I started reading years ago, and it is still one of my favorites 🙂

Melissa - Love love love – it’s amazing how much color and flowers can trasnform a place

Chris - This space is so happy! How you manage to keep all those flowers looking beautiful is like a miracle to me;)

chrissi - best deck ever.

Heather - Wow! I have serious porch envy right now.

Beth - O.M.Gee I have a major girl crush on your deck right now! We have a patio space that I have been milling over ideas to make it more enjoyable and homey. This post inspires me. I’m making it happen in the coming weeks. #goals

Karina - I love your deck. I would spend all my time out there too! (Where did the cornice go in the after pic? Please tell me it didn’t fall!)

Linda - You have an amazing ability for putting together space. I love it! I wish I knew ho to pull things together like that!

Mickie - Love, Love, LOVE it! I love to spend time on our patio too but I have to admit that yours just looks SO happy! And, I can always use happy. It just makes me want to hang out there with my coffee in the morning and wine at night. The perfect beginning and ending to a day!

jen - It looks great! Now will you please come to CO and do mine? 🙂

Rachel - Absolutley goregous! I LOVE it! Toally love your sense of hunour too x

Lisa - Of all the pictures you’ve posted on Instagram and on here I never noticed the speakers until you pointed them out. Haha! I guess I’m not very observant. Or they really aren’t that noticeable. I’m sure you’ll come up with a cool way to cover them but even if you don’t they really don’t stick out.

Lisa - Love what you have done out there, it’s beautiful!

Kristin S - Fly to NC and redo my BORING deck. In five years I’ve sat out there maybe… twice?

Renee - Do you have any advice on planting so many different flowers, especially when they’re sharing a pot? And keeping them all so alive and vibrant?

amyjupin - looks amazinnnnnggggggggg!
let’s layout and work on our tans and drink taladas!

Erin - looks great!! I love every thing! Almost bought that picnic blanket at target today. It was marked down. Now I want to go back for it. Lol!

Jenny B. - Meg, you amaze me! It looks wonderful! I actually did not notice the giant speakers until you pointed them out. Then I laughed because, hello… they are huge! 🙂 I was more interested in the fact that your electrical outlet is up high, as if it was put there just for stringing lights! This post makes me want to go out and decorate our back porch! It also makes me think about using some stuff outside that’s not necessarily made for outside (like mirrors, chalkboards, and school chairs!). Love all that stuff… Also, I remember when you got the Trex patio furniture, and I searched for it on Walmart’s website, and it directed me to a giant T-Rex lawn ornament. HAHA! 🙂

El - Where are your cropped white pants/jeans from that you are wearing with the green shirt in the 4th picture? Love the beautiful flowers!

deb meyers - …and those of us who bought oodles of potted color in spring may or may not have just heaved the sad and crispy remains into the compost…

ann a - We ate at a Mexican restaurant recently that had speakers up in the corner next to the ceiling. They were painted with big bright flowers (right on the black stuff). Your deck is unbelievable! (Except I believe it bc everything you do is awesome.)

Jeanie - I think your yard is wonderful. We enjoy our deck so much too. I just ordered a cow print and am anxiously waiting on delivery. I have to admit that I saw your family last night a at Stearman. I was so freaked out. It was like a celebrity sighting. Ha! My husband said. “You could tell her how much you love her blog”. But I was too star struck. Anyway, cute green dress and your family is darling! What nice teenagers you have. You are exactly the way you represent yourself on your blog and that is neat.

natalie - i am OBSESSED. girrrrl, this is SO GOOD. p.s. i buy plastic light clips at the thrift store because you’re right – they’re seasonal & that’s just plain dumb.

Kristen - I think it looks amazing! I love all of the little touches you added, but pretty much everything you create is amazing. 🙂

Annie’s first pie

craig was gone for the weekend and i mentioned to annie that we should surprise him with an apple pie when he got back.
i said “you could make it yourself… he’d be so happy!”
and that was all it took.
🙂

IMG_1983IMG_1985
who doesn’t love to use the Apple Peeler-Corer ?
all kids love this kitchen tool!
it’s a fact.

IMG_1991
we use the Pioneer Woman cookbook Perfect Pie Crust recipe.
like the original first cookbook from way back when.

funny side note… apparently we don’t have a rolling pin anymore?
it’s now on my grocery list but i guess i left my rolling pin at the CH so we used our can of cooking spray as a rolling pin to make do.

we used the apple pie recipe from The Farm Chicks in the Kitchen cookbook.

IMG_1999IMG_2007
SO BEAUTIFUL!!!

it was totally delicious.

craig was super impressed with annie’s baking skills and effort.
we made homemade ice cream and invited some friends over to enjoy it with us!

IMG_2009

and it made the world’s best breakfast… hands down.IMG_2013

Deb Meyers - Flaky Crust is the gold standard for pie baking and SHE DID IT. Just look at those flakes! great job Annie… it looks SO good.

Kathleen W. - Beautiful pie Annie !! Apple pie for breakfast is the best, enjoy !

Lori - So awesome! I’ve always wanted to make apple pie from scratch. Way to go Annie!

Jenny B. - I love it!! I have seen several kids her and my son’s age do some amazing things lately. They are growing up so fast!! I showed him the picture of Annie with her pie, and he said, “Wow, if I married her, I wouldn’t have to cook!” Ha! He is always thinking ahead. 🙂 By the way, my boys think they will do the cooking when they have families of their own because my husband is the cook in our house (you are welcome, future daughters-in-law). 😉

beth - that looks amazing! Love how she piled it mile high~ : )

Aimee - Next time if you don’t have a rolling pin…use a chilled bottle of wine…the dough doesn’t stick to it!

Kelly - Love that Annie made it on her own! My Mom makes amazing apple pies, and I love having a slice for breakfast!

Bridget - Great idea on the breakfast … it’s basically a better-for-you pop tart :o)

Bethany - Pie for breakfast is the best!

Julie - Great looking pie – love having leftover dessert for a breakfast treat:)

Lisa - Love seeing kids bake and cook! where did you get that adorable mug?

Amy Woods - Ahhhnnnnd now I’m needing apple pie. And coffee.

But Annie, you are awesome girly!

i’m loving…

well… i’m home.
another trip and lots of driving and packing/unpacking/more laundry.
i love to be taking trips and adventuring but i also LOVE being home!

we hit the beach in michigan for 5 nights (everything was booked otherwise we would’ve stayed longer!)
and i didn’t wash my hair the entire trip!
i can do more with my hair when it’s not freshly washed – it’s not so heavy and slick.
my friend shared her favorite dry shampoo and i couldn’t believe it.
i was buying the dumb $18 can because as far as i knew it was the only option.
they were all around $16 – $20.
i loathe paying big money for beauty products.
i always have.
that is why i still use noxema and generic oil of olay on my face.
so when amy said “i just use the dove brand dry shampoo” i was giddy!

Dove-dry
it’s $4 at target and walmart.
YES!!!

SUPERskinnysideways

ok… the song that i am loving right now is “Dearly Departed” by Shaky Graves.
craig and i have been listening to this band non-stop because of this song.

that video above is the acoustic version… after his interview.
i love the radio version too.
but don’t love the music video because i don’t care for ghost/zombies…
BUT THE SONG IS SO GOOD.
so you should listen to both.  🙂

you’re welcome.
🙂

SUPERskinnysideways

and what else am i loving?

mojitos.
c915b99d091751455a2418ea893d53d8-1
jenny made excellent mojitos on vacation and i want one right this second.
click that photo for the link.

ok… i have a ton of laundry to do!
happy saturday to you!

Carol S. - Super fun idea with all the trimmings. Wow! Your flower pots are booming, really love the colorful punches all around. We had a yummy casserole for dinner then all watched a movie on Netflix. Just being together makes for a great night!!

Heather - Suave has a great smelling dry shampoo too. I’ve found it at Target. I have a couple of pricey ones too but usually pull out that one bc it’s quick.

Nichole - If you like Shakey Graves you might also like Channing and Quinn. My favorites are “Fall” and “Slow Burn” on their Temporary Things album. You can find it on Amazon under digital music.

Lyn - I’m seeing Shakey Graves in Jackson,WY in A few weeks while on vacation with my family! I can’t wait! I also use that dove dry shampoo. It’s my fave drigstore brand!

Lindsay F. - I LOVE that Dove dry shampoo!! Like big puffy heart love! I’ve used several in different price ranges and it’s definitely my fave! I have fine, straight hair and I use it daily for some texture and oomph!

Angela - I’ve only recently gotten up the gumption to try dry shampoo. I wasn’t convince it would work on my hair. Anyway, I’ve really come to love the Not Your Mother’s brand of dry shampoo. It’s also super cheap at Target, so if you’re looking for options, I’d recommend it.

Meg’s week of summer – part one!

if your friend has a beach house & she invites you to come stay with her… GO!
make all the arrangements… find places for your kids… take off work and just get there.
and if you can find friends who are hilarious, loud and bring all the fun… then you are going to be GUARANTEED a good time!

IMG_9741
look at how crazy adorable this beach house is?!!
it was too much goodness!

IMG_9754
we laughed till 4 in the morning.
and then again.
and again.

IMG_9774IMG_9737
i can’t say enough that i loved every single detail.
everything was SO pretty!

i know everyone is going to ask if this is a rental (because it’s awesome!) but it is not.

IMG_9739IMG_9813
and we got to take showers outside if we wanted!
i totally loved that!
IMG_9747IMG_9748
if i am correct… we were in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
i thought i was in florida for several days so don’t call me if you have any geography questions ok?
IMG_9786IMG_9783IMG_9801IMG_9816
the beach is my favorite place for a million reasons.
and if i get girlfriend time AT THE BEACH?
it doesn’t get too much better than that.
we were soaking it in… breathing deep… it was the best.
IMG_9822chicago6
we ordered the mexican garbage because Tommy told us too.
and does a pina colada taste any better than when you’re at the beach?
nope.

IMG_9904IMG_9905
this was Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding?  oh my goodness.

IMG_9921IMG_9912IMG_9933
and then just like that it was time to go home.
sad face.

i love these girls.
so grateful to have the chance to be truly AWAY.
no craft house.  no guests.  no work.  no speaking.  no kiddos.  not even wifi!
total rest.
while laughing till i cried.

the best kind of rest.

Tiffany - That looks like perfection!

Deana - I think it’s so great to truly unplug (no wifi) and decompress with other women! So glad you got this opportunity! and PS that house is amazing!

Kelly - I don’t know what all the hashtags are but my guess is maybe inside jokes? BUT Sitka AK is one of my very most favorite places in the world. 🙂 Kelly

Stephanie - Come back Meg! We miss you!

sharon / theprincipledtype.blogspot.com - I am sooo happy for you!

Patti Mullican - Sad face this is not a rental. Gulf Shores, AL is one of my fav places of all time! Glad you had a fantastic trip! Now, I want to go back there!

stephanie - but what if you don’t have a friend that owns a beach house? Can you buy one? If you bought one than you could invite me except I get up at 4 am so it would be hard for me to laugh until 4 am but if you bought a beach house and invited me to come, I would try.

Becky - I hope you got to eat at The Original Oyster House! If not, GO BACK!! You missed something!!! Gulf Shores/Orange Beach are the beaches of my state and are so beautiful! Your friend’s home is beautiful!!

Jenny B. - That looks like SO much fun!! And, how is it that you just keep looking younger?? Seriously, I don’t know if it’s the long hair, or what! 🙂 You look great! So glad you had fun! I have to admit I’m just a tad bit jealous. 😉

Debby Graber - We vacation at Dauphin Island, which is fairly close by. We’ve thought about purchasing a vacation home down there…. Wouldn’t that be awesome!! Just a dream. I grew up looking out my bedroom window at the ocean and I would love to live there again!
So I saw in one of the pictures that I have the same dress you have, Meg. I think we must both love that French store in Wichita!

Amy Woods - Just awesome! I have a Fall retreat each year with my sisters, an Aunt, and a cousin – who are also my BFFs. Nothing like it. NOTHING.

So happy for you getting the time away!

beth larson - Hey Meg!
This looks like such a fun getaway that I can’t hardly stand it~ if each of us had a friend with a beach house like that I don’t think there would be any world wars…lol

Laughing with good girlfriends is the most healing balm in the whole world…man I’m missing mine as I type this. : )

xo, Beth

Kelly W. - Gulf Shores is our favorite place to vacation! Since we’re only about 4 hours North of there, it’s not too hard to get to. So glad you enjoyed yourself on our sandy shores!

Stephanie - You WERE basically in Florida. Lol. I live about an hour and a half east from where you were. Glad you enjoyed yourself so much in our area!

Kimberlee - Seeing all of these ladies together in this post made me miss them even more. So glad you all were able to get away together!

Heather E. - Ahhhh! You were in my neck of the woods, I live about 30 minutes from Gulf Shores! It is THE BEST and it looks like you had a blast! Beautiful beach house your friend has there!

Southern Gal - Nothing in this world like a beach and good girlfriends to share it with.

Jackie - Amazing! My husband says even a rainy day at the beach is a good one. Looks like you had fun!

one on one

IMG_8937
i took annie on a little overnight getaway to see some of our friends who recently moved.
we drove three hours away and stopped for treats whenever we felt like it.
when i have my kids one-on-one it is fun to be able to say YES all the time.
coffee at starbucks for everyone? no… that’s extravagant.
coffee for just the two of us?  YES!

IMG_8929IMG_8940IMG_8957
annie and her friend were playing in the pool as soon as they could.
these two have been buddies for as long as they can remember.
they to the same preschool and i did pick up & play time once a week & they did pick up & playtime once a week.
(do you do that with someone at your preschool?? you should!  it’s amazing!)

IMG_8973IMG_8969
we went out for dinner to a restaurant that annie has been DYING to go to forever.
she was so surprised!
and said “thank you so much for bringing me here!!!”
🙂
and then said it again at bedtime.
it was adorable.
IMG_9042IMG_9050IMG_9045
this salad was delicious!

i loved having time with my friend in her new home and new city!
so fun to check in with her!
i hate that she moved away but i love that she’s only three hours away!

spending time with just annie was a sweet little treat.
we spent the night and headed back to kansas together.
and i drove her straight to her camp to bunk up with all her friends from school.
she was excitedly nervous when i left.
i knew she would have the best time and she did.

Candy - What is the restaurant? The only reason I ask is that I’m about three hours away from you and it looks yummy!

Flower Patch Farmgirl - Cuties!!!
Can’t wait for our turn. 🙂

Mickie - That backyard looks like my dream backyard. AHmazing!
And, yay for Redrock. I would recognize those plates, mashed potatoes and that dessert anywhere. My absolute favorite!

jen - One on one days/overnights are so much fun! Love them. And that backyard looks amazing!!

Sharla - What an awesome pool. Looks like they had a great time! 🙂

Jacci in Ohio - I seriously almost emailed you last week to see if I could weed all the weeds at the Craft House in exchange for an overnight 🙂 Ha ha. Really, though, I bet you could have a discounted “work weekend” and people would still show up. I’d love to weed all day and then collapse in the porch swing with a piece of Pam’s cheesecake! My name is first on the list if you ever decide to try it!

Brooke Klintworth - I recognize that place….. Tulsa!! Hope you liked it here:)

sharon / theprincipledtype.blogspot.com - do i smell wedding bells in 15 years? (sorry! lollollol!!!) (and if so, please have those donuts at the reception!)

summer happiness.

you guys… this summer is so good!!
i am loving it.
every day!
we have loads of sports but it keeps us active and not in front of a screen.
i like it even more when i remember my bug spray, my water and my chair.

annie is really enjoying softball this summer… especially after she got her own pair of baseball pants.
🙂
she feels much more like an authentic ball player now.

IMG_8355
i am eating this salad several times a week this summer.
i can’t get enough of it!IMG_8356IMG_8389
this picture was funny to me…two kids playing separately on the floor… safely apart.
the legos have come out of storage again and are keeping annie busy.
(thank you Lego Movie! #everythingISawesome)
and we’ve been baby sitting our little friend too.
he’s a few weeks away from crawling into the legos so the clock is ticking on the floor lego time.
and he sleeps like a sweet little angel.
thighs rolls are the best!  🙂

when i make bunting for the shop it starts out like this…
and then over and over 25 times.
all before it is sewn together.
4000 squares later… it’s almost ready for the shop.
IMG_8467
the girls play softball AND basketball right now.
i appreciate an air conditioned gym in the summer.  🙂

IMG_8567
jr. high girls softball is tricky.
they are learning… there are lots of skill levels… they are pitching on their own… and catching…
it’s a lot to learn and perform.
but she LOVES it.
which makes me so happy.

i didn’t make it out to shop for a swimsuit before school got out and it just seemed impossible once every one was home all day.
i thought my suit from last year would work.
i actually had two.
but the strap got eaten by the dryer of one and the other just seemed to have lost it’s elastic over the winter.
BOO.
so i decided to order a bunch and do what i would do at a store… at home.
Macy’s has free returns so i decided to just go for it.
my credit card company called me assuming it was fraud.
HA!
i said “no… it’s just me trying to find a swimsuit.”
i know my body and i know what works for me.
i know i can’t do a tankini because i need FULL support up top.
i know i don’t want anything cutting in on my tummy.
i know i need some spanx-y fabric through the middle.
i know i need a skirt over my hips.
i know these things because i know my body and how to hide and accent.
so i searched a lot and ordered these suits.
i ended up with the chevron… the navy dot… and maybe the magenta.
i enjoyed swim suit shopping at home in my bathroom much more than taking a whole day, driving all around and hoping to find one possible match.

IMG_8762
more basketball.
and the day after that was ALL basketball.
i drove back and forth between gyms all day but i had time to myself which was nice.
at one point i sat in the car outside of a starbucks in my car getting wifi and blogging about summer drinks.
and repeat the basketball again on sunday.
this margarita was the perfect ending to all that.
IMG_8807IMG_8886
so proud of all these kids!
it’s hard work to play all those games!
i could NEVER do it.
two games in a day? three?  four?  heck no.
but they loooove it!

this picture could just be labeled “SUMMER”
am i right?

.
i stopped at the craft house and pulled a few weeds (unfortunately there are still a thousand more) while craig mowed the lawn.
i washed the pillow cases for the porch furniture and swept all the cobwebs away.
a clean porch is a good thing.

and right now… three of kids are at camp.
for the rest of the week!
i have one 17 year old at home and that is it!
what?
it’s crazy.
and awesome.
and quiet!
17 year olds sleep a lot.  🙂

isn’t summer just wonderful?
these days are so good.
i am loving it.
all of it.

Shauna Jones - I just have to tell you that your blog makes me so happy. I’ve followed it for years, but have never commented. When I’m feeling blue, or like life is hard, I come read a little of your blog. Thanks for finding the beauty in the every day. I love the bright colors, the kid pictures, the dog pictures, all of it. Thanks for making the world a brighter place!

Tricia - Hello! That salad looks yummy! I want to make sure I have all of the ingredients:

chicken
spinach
strawberries
blueberries
walnuts
red onion
poppy seed dressing

Anything else?

Thanks!

Gina - Wow!! Busy summer. Brilliant idea about swimsuits too!! I’ve bought my last few from Lands End and really like theirs. I agree you have to know what works best for your body. And I am going to be the one that asks for the salad recipe. 😉 I see baby spinach, strawberries, blueberries, red onion, pecans and grilled chicken. Am I missing anything? Any cheese and what dressing do you use? 🙂 TIA!! 🙂 I get on salad kicks too.

Jen - I love summer too, and I even work 25 hours a week. I wish I had more free time with my girls, but beggers can’t be choosers and I do love my job. I just love no homework, no school schedule, no lunch packing, no “hurry, you need to get to bed”…it’s just more relaxed.

Also, I was with Aaron Dody last night here in Ohio – fam were in town from KS. He loved seeing pictures of his grandparents old house – the Craft House. He explained that the kitchen isn’t where it used to be, told me about the business his dad and grandpa ran out of the top floor (do you know?), this room is next to this room, oh wow! there used to be a wall there, etc. I LOVED listening to him as he saw your old house. I have to admit that after following your blog for 6+ years and loving your home pics, I was a bit geeked out. I STILL cannot believe how I put this puzzle together. Out of all the people in this world, all the houses, awesome. crazy. wonderful. awesome. Have a wonderful weekend!

Maria - it’s amazing what subtracting three kids can do! My three oldest are off at camp this week too…just the youngest at home and it has been way too quiet! About 24 hrs left of that….

Enjoy your summer!

I

Stephanie - Yay! Love the suits you chose. You’ll look gorgeous in those rich tones.
Your summer sounds so good. So quintesentially summer! I hate summer. But it’s because I live in Florida. It’s so gross here in the summer. I remember summer in KS–so pleasant. Gets hot once in awhile, but mostly great!

Pam - I too love summer, however it will be 115 degrees here today. We hide in our house like it is a hobit hole and play games and drink iced tea and lemonade. When the sun goes down we slink out into the night for a swim in the quiet, heavy air. Such a freshing treat before bedtime. 🙂

Amy Woods - I have an only child. Also 17. He doesn’t sleep much, but he is definitely quiet or out. He will be a senior when school starts. WAHHHHH! My baby!!!

Love the suits your picked! And all your pics are FAB!!
