rockin’ 1980

Scan0006
purple corduroy knickers.
purple knee socks.
pink turtleneck sweater.
david crosby?

Ozarks
oh man i loved the zip sled!
my grandpa harold drove the boat and i waved to everyone we passed.

Swimming3-1
my mom was the queen of the floating styrofoam lawn chairs.

Washing_hair
my mom used to wash my hair in the kitchen sink.
did yours?

kristine - wow! talby looks just like you! i WANT that floating styrofoam chair!! yes, my mom washed my hair in sink…HATED IT!

tami reed - your kids look just like you lol

Nan - Oh my gosh. I totally had purple corduroy knickers!

Grammy Dianne - Just read the comment about curly perms and the kitchen sink. I’m really “old” and have tortuous memories of leaning over a kitchen sink and having all the really smelly stuff rinsed out of my hair. The kicker was, I hated curly hair and wanted two braids hanging down my back. My mother would have none of that. So guess the hair style my daughter wore for years, two braids. I almost fainted when she turned ten and wanted a permanent. Go figure! Loved this post, and the comments, the kitchen sink as part of Americana.

jennibell - I wash my kids’ hair in the kitchen sink — ha! And I would have been the Queen of the Floating Arm Chair too. . .all I have is the kids’ tube 🙂 And yep, had those knickers too. Except mine were turquoise. We must be about the same age.

Rach - OMG, those pics remind me of my own childhood and I kid you not, I had those very same knickers only mine were in green!! Ha!

jeanne - OK…you were adorable. Me…not so much and I don’t know if I would have the nerves to show those photos.

deb meyers - aw meg, you’re so cute!
Yep, on the sink-hairwashing thing. My mother gave me curly perms when I was a toddler, even. And that included sink trips.

candace - Wow, talby looks JUST like you. My mom washed my hair inthe sink too. I really loved it when she used that white rubber hose sprayer thingy!
This post is great!

Mindi - Your daughters look just like you!! So cute! My grandmother, Granis, used to put us in the kitchen sink to wash our hair and then sit us down with a fine tooth comb and comb thin strands, then curl them around her finger… I am amazed that a)she was patient enough to do this and b)we would sit still long enough for them to dry so that we would have curly hair!
Oh! And she used Joy dish soap instead of shampoo!!!!

Kim - wow, everyone’s already said it, but your two littles look SO much like you! what was it with the 80’s and washing hair in the sink!? we loved it, except my mom would use some vinegar to rinse, and we hated that.

Christina - Yes, the kitchen sink. Ah! I could never do that now. haha
Your girls look so much like you. 🙂

Lori - My mom washed her hair in the kitchen sink for as long as I can remember. Didn’t know it was so common!

Laura Zarrin - Yes she did! I haven’t thought of that in a long time. Great pics. I grew up in St. Louis. Your lake photos and the zip sled brought back great memories! Thanks.

JJ - As if you need another comment-but I had to reply. Yes! My mom did wash my hair in the kitchen sink- what was up with that? I’m thinking of Breck shampoo. I recenly found your blog- it’s a happy place!

Carol S. - Check out that album collection!! Big music fans, gotta love it. Uh huh, we did the “car wash” in the kitchen sink, that was my mom’s fun way of getting us to get our hair washed. Was just talking to her, and she still washes her hair daily in the kitchen sink on the days she doesn’t shower. Can not EVEN imagine a bottle of shampoo under my kitchen sink these days. Yes, strong resemblance to your girls. You look like you had a joyful childhood and a fun and happy mom. Enjoy!

Julie - This is beyond awesome. Also, I think I had the same purple knickers!!!

Staci Danford - OK.. I am totally cracking up.. YES YES YES my mom washed my hair in the kitchen sink.. haha What memories that brought back. I’d lay on the counter and lay my head back in the sink… So funny to think of it now…. but I think I’d kinda like her to try that again.. LOVE This post… And wow did I have some knickers too.. Thought they were literally the coolest things on the whole planet.
Staci

Meredith - I absolutely HAD to comment on this one!! Yes, my Mom washed my hair in the kitchen sink! I actually laid across the kitchen counter and hung my head back into the sink. She did this till I was too LONG for the countertop! Gosh, how old was I when she was still washing my hair like that?!?!

se7en - Oh What a cute post… Memory lane!!! Love it!!!

Tere - Yep, Talby looks like her mama. Such beautiful eyes!

mandi - haha! david crosby in the background is HILARIOUS! my husband and i were just talking about the styrofoam floating chairs. how we wished we could find some. : )
i was reading some of your older entries- the one on your wedding. your list of what you would want for another wedding made me think of the re-wedding my husband planned for us last summer. totally on his own. total surprise to me. we had quilts on hay, a big wavy grass field, family and friends, yummy food…too perfect. if you wanna peek you can looksy here:
http://herbanhomestead.blogspot.com/2009/06/one-lovely-event-one-sweet-husband.html

LibraryGirl62 - I graduated high school in 1980…sigh…and I totally wish I could rock the Styrofoam lawn chair! All those new fangled foam things just don’t get it for me

patti - Wow…your girls really look like you as a kid – minus the purple corduroy, of course. Crazy how that works! 🙂

tara pollard pakosta - You know what is hilarious?! I had those exact same purple knicker pants LOL! and YES< my mom used to wash my hair in the kitchen sink til I was 14 because I was afraid of showers and it was easier to do in the sink than bend over the bath-tub! too FUNNY! tara

adrienne - my mom still washes her hair in the sink :)) i see a bit of talby and annie in your pictures!

Sandra K - Hi Meg,
My mom totally washed my hair in the kitchen sink and I loved it! So funny to think about that now. Thanks for a happy trip down memory lane!

Amy - Wow….brings back wonderful 80’s memories. Lauren looks just like your sister in the last pic!! Annie and Talby look just like you! Sink hair washing was bigtime in my family too. My mom fixed (TEASED) my grandmothers hair for years and always washed it in the kitchen sink, ha!

Marley - My mom always washed my hair in the sink! I asked her to do it until I was about 15

Stephanie Carroll - I;m 26 and I still ask my mom to wash my hair in the sink when I go home. That’s not weird, right?

Theresa - My girls love it when I wash their hair in the sink – your lake photos remind me of my parent’s house – thanks for sharing!

Jennifer - girlfriend…this is great! you made me smile with this post…brought back some of my own family, childhood memories from the ’80s!

Nina Diane - wow….I can really see Annie and Talby in you

Peggyrice@gmail.com - Only when I had head lice:)

Suzanne Gallagher - Used to…sometimes I still do! Sometimes a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do in a small amount of time .
Have a great weekend!

Sara @ It's Good to be Queen - love it. Talby & Annie look just like you!!

Tara - My hair was super long, I would lay on the counter and get it washed in the sink..lol.. what great memories. I love your blog.

Dianne Avery - Me too! I completely forgot that my hair was washed in the kitchen!! So funny. Maybe we should start a new trend and bring it back. 🙂

Gemma - Very cute! We’ve been looking back at old photo’s recently. Isn’t it funny to look back and think…”what on earth am I wearing that for?!?!” Heehee!

Heather - i need one of those floating lawn chairs right away. awesome!

Karen Gerstenberger - I loved these photos! We were BIG Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young fans. =)
My mom used to bathe all of me in the kitchen sink – and there are (blackmail) photos to prove it!
Have a great weekend.

Cate O'Malley - Love the styrofoam floating lawn chair. Talby could not possibly look more like you from those pictures. I, um, totally still wash my hair in the sink.

Laura - How old are you? LOL! I’m 35 and I have pictures that look EXACTLY like those. As a matter of fact, my mom took a before, during and after picture of me getting my hair washed in the sink and it cracks me up every time I see them. I go from looking scared, to crying to smiling with my beautifully dried and Farrah Fawcett-ed hair, LOL!

(I still wash my hair in the kitchen sink every once in a while when I don’t have time/need for a full shower.

Rachel @ Pencil Shavings - This is SO funny.
Yes, we had a floating lawn chair (loved that thing) and yes, my mom would scrub my hair in the kitchen sink. She believed hair wasn’t clean until it squeaked, literally. It wasn’t until I was, ohh, 20 that I realized that squeaky hair is sad, sad hair stripped of all its natural oils. Hahaha!
Weirdly enough, sometimes I like to wash my hair in the sink when I don’t have time for the full-on-hop-in-the-shower. Is that weird?

Lisa - Those pictures are GREAT! Yep, Dad washed my hair over the sink every day. 🙂

katy - Cool pics, I can definitely see your girls in your pics. Yes, I had many a hairwashing in the sink…what was up with that????

Jessica - One Shiny Star - Your kiddos look just like you!

Messy@Bungalow'56 - Brings back those 80’s memories. Oh boy. Funny how everything looks so familiar. I wasn’t quite as stylish as you though. Amazing how your girls look like you. I look like the nanny with mine. They are all their father.

Angela B. - So fun! That first picture of you looks so much like Talby. I also rocked the purple corduroy knickers and I would wear them with purple and pink argyle knee-high socks. I thought I was so stylish! Thanks for the fun flashback.

Becky @ Farmgirl Paints - I can’t believe how much you look like your girls, or I should say they look like you…wow!

Lori - Mom would wash my hair in the kitchen sink too. And the water was always too hot! Love these pictures. Amazing to see how much Talby and Annie look like these pictures!

Courtney Walsh - these are awesome! I love the floating lawn chair!!
We definitely did the sink-wash! Is it weird that I still remember things like, towels and sheets we had when I was little? So weird!

angela - First of all, YES, every Saturday night my hair was washed in the kitchen sink!
Second, your Talby looks JUST LIKE YOU !!

You know, I am moving to the cold weather and I just might think about that hot chocolate machine! Just kidding. I know you have enjoyed it and I loved giving it to you. I hope you are doing well.

Suzanne - so not funny.

Laura Phelps - Isn’t it amazing that even when you tell us NOTHING, you get over 40 people commenting?

jody - enough! let’s hear what you’ve got!

Tracy - I think I have checked back 5 or 6 times today….do you have some pics from the arts and crafts fair? Just a thought!

Patti - i think we can categorize this as cruel and unusual punishment.

Wendy - I have officially checked back here 4 times today, Dana M.!!! LOL! Pw and Meg are the only blogs I’d do that for. 🙂

Ashley Ann - I am holding my breath that it is pictures from the Cora Playground dedication. I have checking the Macs blog and yours waiting for a glimpse. If that isn’t the post you have in mind…please post on that soon. I wish I could have been there….

i’m alive

this is a song (no video anywhere to go with it…anywhere!) that i keep playing over and over.
i just love it.

breathing in and out is a blessing can't you see…
today's the first day of the rest of my life…
i'm alive and well.
Annie2

Ann
Anni

and today you know that's good enough for me.

i'm alive and well.

Cheap Jordans - IT IS hard to look at the Capitol in Washington, DC, without a frisson of excitement

Mikaela - I am a mom of 2 from WI and stumbled upon your blog from The Macs. I love all your pictures! You’re work is amazing. I am not sure if this is proper to be asking or not but wondered if you sell your pictures? If it’s not appropriate, just disregard my question, I totally understand. But if your game…what I am looking for is picture to go with the saying “Skip to my Lou”. I make barettes and wanted to make a sign to accompany them where I sell them or for a business card. I am a pastor’s wife and just do this on the side. It’s really not a big endeavor, just something small to try to help my sister’s family out….they are in the process of adopting a little girl from China.
I love the last picture of the girl standing on the bench with the sunflowers in the background. I would just want the picture from under her armpit down. Could you crop it down or could I? Let me know your thoughts. Please be honest with me and sorry if this is way out of line to be asking. Honestly, it’s taken me months to even muster up the courage to ask you this question because I just wasn’t sure if it was appropriate. Either way, know I love your work. You can e-mail me back at besureofHim@hotmail.com

i have not forgotten you.
but i am very slow.
thank you for being patient….i am trying to adjust to this new role as a working woman
while still working 24-7 at home. (the laundry alone is enough to make me cry)
seriously while i am typing this annie is having a HUGE meltdown tantrum downstairs.
like lose your mind kind of screaming….
and i have no idea why.

so don't worry.
your pictures will be done soon.
i can tell you this…you will all be happy.
i have looked at all of your photos and every one of you will love your shots….yes!

i appreciate you.

************************************************

AND i did not succeed on my 2 rooms a day plan.
i did clean the boys' room…for 6 hours.
i mean….come on!
that is just wrong.

IMG_1728

IMG_1717 IMG_1739

IMG_1723
that's our cat emily.
she is a sneaky quiet kitty that no one sees….and she HATES waffle with a passion.

IMG_1730
i also cleaned out the laundry room…packed for a trip…washed all the clothes…and got a lot done.
but not 2 rooms a day.
i STINK at goal setting.

***********************************************

AND that same new kids on the block song was on this morning??
the first time was cool but twice in one week…20 years later….too much.

**********************************************

AND i was 7 months pregnant with talby when 9/11 happened.
i had just dropped lauren at school, scott at preschool and sean at a sitters.
i listened to the radio as i drove from the sitters to the lab to have a blood test done.
i was in a little bit of shock.
i had no clue what was going on.
i went into this little lab and a woman sat behind her desk listening to a tiny radio
and i could barely hear it.
it was the two of us alone in this building listening to people yelling and screaming
"the second tower just fell" etc.
tears ran down in my face…big and pregnant in my bright pink shirt…in the corner chair.
i called craig and asked if he was ok…what do i do…please come home.
it was such a helpless feeling.
a tragedy.
i took my kids out of school and sat home worrying myself sick.
crying all day…sure that chicago would be the next hit.

and today….i am getting on a plane.
on 9/11.
crazy.

Joanna Peck (Jodi) - I should have been pregnant with my 3rd…..but he had been taken by C section on Aug 22nd. (he was due on Oct 19th) he weighed 2# 6oz at birth. I was HYSTERICAL that morning. We were in a different city…in a different home…so we could stay at the hospital everyday to be with him. My 6 year old was in a school–that she was not familiar with. I had a 2 year old that I had to take up to the hospital with me everyday–I could hardly walk those 1st few days, You are not supposed to drive-HAH! I had a preemie–I must hold him, talk to him, sing to him. I was driving by the 4th day alone. My husband was on 3rd shift then– so he slept during the day. All of this to tell you I was HORMONAL and HYSTERICAL! I was pacing back and forth saying– I need to get my baby, I need to get my baby! I too was in a suburb of Chicago, thinking it was next! My husband had to shake me and tell me– you can’t take him out of the hospital– He will die, you can’t take him. The fear was overwhelming. It felt to me like I was choking. I will never, ever forget that day. So sad for our country! On a completely different note….No idea there was a cat in your house. We have one that looks just like her named “Tiggy”

pve - This morning -my husband asked me to find out the time of the movie show and then tonight when he asked what time the movie was and I said I had not done it….I simply saluted. He could whip anyone into shape or shame…lol
Enjoy your time away getting further behind….he he.
pve

Audrey - Ahhh, I could have written this post…keeping up with house/kids/work is tough! Kid rooms take longer to clean than they should! And I too was 8 months pregnant on that morning. I cried listening to re-broadcasts from 9-11 today, and remembered so many things I will never forget.

Jaime @ Simply Arizona - The room looks good! 🙂 Although I noticed no “in the closet” shots! lol… Sorry, maybe I am the only one who throws everything in the closet? lol…
Cute cat!

Jaime @ Simply Arizona - The room looks good! 🙂 Although I noticed no “in the closet” shots! lol… Sorry, maybe I am the only one who throws everything in the closet? lol…
Cute cat!

Sarah W. - 6 hours! You deserve some kind of fantastic treat, i’m sure!
I did not do one single room this week. I picked up a few things here and there… but as for my deep clean one room a day…. NEVER happened. I’m not good at goal setting either.
Being a mommy and working gets in the way of cleaning sometimes, and seriously there’s a million other better things to distract from cleaning.
I remember this day 8 years ago so well.
Overwhelmed. Upset. Angry. Scared.
I cried. Waited for my daddy to get home. And attacked him with the
biggest hug ever when he came in the door. (he had just been in new york and washington dc. just days before)
Be safe on your trip. And have lots of fun.

Becky @ Farmgirl Paints - I spent the day with my New Yorker friend today. Every Sept. 11th she wakes up and has a hard morning cry. We can’t really understand the fear and grief that gripped the people of that city. It’s still so hard to fathom.

Michelle - I get goosebumps when I think about that morning. It still brings back that same helpless feeling, every time. We saw the very best and the very worst in people that day.

pam - laundry should be a four letter word. 🙂

Ashley Ann - Man that long list of people to get pictures too…I KNOW that feeling…and all the late nights that come with it. Hang in there, I can’t wait to see all the amazing pictures you have stored away for future blog posts! Congrats on a quickly growing business…stay true to you in the midst of it!

Amber - love the cat pictures. :o) and today i have wasted 1/2 of the day sitting in bed taking naps and surfing the web. o_O don’t feel so bad.

Elisa - Be kind to yourself about the work.
I too struggle, and threaten to quit almost every day.

robyn Beckley Vining - i was in chicago, too. i know.

robyn Beckley Vining - i was in chicago, too. i know.

Amy B - Not waiting on pics – darn it – GA is too far away, but you go girl! You’ll get it all done and it will be fabulous!!! Thanks for reminding us all that we aren’t in this mom thing alone.

Sarah - Boys rooms take twice as long…you know, the Legos, the moldy hidden apple cores, the empty crinkled Dorito bags, the dirty shirts hidden in the closets…
I totally procrastinate on THAT room.

Miranda - 6 Hours to clean your boys’ room…bless you. I love that other people type blogs while their kids are screaming…I’m always trying to gauge the urgency of a cry while I type ONE MORE SENTENCE.

Karina - I’ll never forget 9/11 either. Even though I’m up in Canada, all flights were grounded that day and we had house guests who could not fly back to the UK. I was off work and just sat in front of the TV all day. Then I attended a huge memorial on Parliament Hill and cried with thousands of others. It is hard to believe it has been 8 years.
I, too, would like to know: where are you going?

Laura Phelps - 9/11….ya know, I had JUST flown from NYC back to LA on 9/9 that year. I sat and stared at the luggage tag on my bag as the towers fell. And I had nearly stayed in NY longer, alone with Jack, pregnant with Belle. Had I stayed, I doubt I would have ever gotten on a plane with my babies alone back to LA. My father and brother work in NYC. I lived in the West Village before moving here. Jack and I played at Battery park nearly daily. He would sit in the jogging stroller and we would roller blade down..with the towers as our destination. I am glad you posted about it…we need to remember.
and on a lighter note…your Emily looks just like our Delilah.
Have a safe trip…to…where?????

Dana D @BoysMyJoys - Safe travels to you!!!

Flower Patch Farmgirl - Fun boy room! And I liked hearing you 9/11 story. Such a defining and terrifying moment for all of us. I’m sure we all remember exactly what we were doing at that moment.
Also – Where the heck are you going? You just sorta threw that one out there, right at the end.

carissa... brown eyed fox - i was pregnant too! what a scary… “what is happening to our world” day!
i TOTALLY understand the plane thing… i have a pit in my stomach EVERY time i board a plane… BUT… get on that plane… HE is with you… HE will get you through! i pray for peace for you! safe travels!
there is NO way i could get two rooms done in a day either… we have WAY to many distractions! at our own pace… it eventually gets done! 🙂

Sharla - The sad thing is I think I could spend 6 hours cleaning EVERY room of my house right now. I hope to get at least one knocked out this weekend.
Can’t wait to see the pictures – you have been BUSY girl!
Have a great weekend.

Heather @ Cookie Mondays - so chloe and talby are the same age, cause chloe was two weeks old! i was nursing her while watching it unfold on tv. it was my 19th birthday.
safe trip 🙂

Sarah @ In A Dream - I thought you had mentioned a cat at some point – it’s good to see her! Very pretty! My cat had to stay outside once we got our Scottie because of a lot of “spraying” or basically peeing all over everything.
It’s quite amazing how this country has changed since 2001. I miss all the flags and the national pride. I was in the seventh grade when it happened and didn’t even know what the World Trade Center was. Boy, did my world change!

Kathy - Safe travels!!

jennifer - Here’s to laundry, doing the best we can on the housework, and to living in a still free country 8 years later…
Have a wonderful getaway wherever you’re going. Hope it’s just you and Craig. 🙂

Lori Danelle - I’m great at Goal-Setting.
Just horrible at Goal-Following-Thru.
have fun on you trip!!
http://loridanelle.blogspot.com

Joel Rodell - I didn’t make the list!
Joel

Jill J - I too had no idea there was a cat in the house! How funny.
I was 4 months pregnant with my son (my first) on 9/11. I remember watching it all on t.v. and balling my eyes out thinking, “what have I done bringing this child into the world at a time like this?!” What a scary feeling that day was. I can’t imagine living in a country where war is constantly raging.
On a lighter note, have a good weekend! I hope it’s productive… and relaxing. That can happen, right?

Julia - that sounds like a good kind of behind – can’t wait to see the pics

Jo - I did not know you had a cat, maybe that’s because she hides! 🙂 love the boys’ room, good job!

CK - I was pregnant with my first child on 9/11. I cried, too. I was so worried about the world that we were bringing her into. A few years ago, we visited the site of the 2 towers. There is this wind that blows through and the presence of so many lost… It literally gave me goosebumps. My heart still aches for all of those that lost loved ones that day. May God continue to comfort them.

mom - I felt the same way when I flew to France 3 years ago today! Who would book a flight on 9-11? We would!!Ha.
Can’t wait to get the kiddos for the weekend.

Stephanie - Hard to believve it’s been 8 years since the tragedy of 9/11.
I didn’t know you had a kitty! She’s so cute. I love how you just walk in a room and there they are randomly curled up asleep on a peice of furniture or under the dining table. I’m a kitty person in case you didn’t pick up on that!

Maria Masurat - Travel safe today – know that you’ll be in my prayers.

adrienneK - omg you need to go look at my “happy” laundry post!!!!
a cat?! i had no clue you had a cat?!?
oh my look at all the KU stuff my husband is from kansas and his dad and step mom and other family still live there,so we have a ton of jay hawks kiddie gear for the girls!!

i was shopping with friends and i said i wanted to get some new tennis shoes.
we went in the nike store and everyone went their own way.
i looked at shoes about 3 minutes.
i picked a pair…paid for them and we left.

later that night i look down at one of my friend's shoes and said
"oh my gosh….those are the shoes i bought today!"

i thought it was so funny.
oh all the shoes in the whole store
or any store….
i picked the exact ones as her without even knowing….or her noticing.

i guess we really do like the same things.

Jo - That reminds me, I need to go out and buy some new sneakers too! But it will definitely take me longer than 3minutes!

Tiffany - That is pretty funny!!

Lori Danelle - my best friend and I do stuff like that all the time! We live on opposites sides of the state and will show up wearing the exact same thing. How does that happen??
http://loridanelle.blogspot.com

Thanks for your link on the side “families needed” about transracial adoption. The video of such a well adjusted young adult and a glimpse into his relationship with his mom blessed my day. Have a great weekend.

Pineapple Princess - I like ’em too! 🙂

Lee Ann - I’m still stuck back on the part where you picked a pair of shoes in three minutes………I could never do that! 🙂

Amnah - That happens to me and my sister all the time. She lives in WA, I’m in Cali. I’ll start describing what I bought and she’ll tell me that she just bought the same exact thing.

Kate - That’s the beauty of true friendship–you are lucky to have that!

Val Russell - It only took you 3 minutes to pick out shoes?! Good job you! I have to try on like 17 pairs before I am close to deciding.

Ashley - My best friend and I do that all the time. Years ago, we were living several states apart and I called her to tell her that I had gotten a new purse and she laughed and said that she had gotten one too. When we got together several months later we discovered that we had bought the same purse AND the same wallet! We laughed and laughed!

carissa... brown eyed fox - the best kind of coinkidink!
