2014 in photos

2014four2014eleven2014fifteen2014five2014eight2014fourteen2014nine2014one2014seven2014seventeen2014six2014sixteen2014ten2014thirteen2014three2014twelve2014TWO

what a fun way to remember!

i was going through Instagram and Facebook, seeing so many posts on what they learned this year.
and their word for the year.
i felt blank.
i thought… did i learn ANY thing?
my brain was feeling like mush from the holiday crazy schedule.

then i looked through these photos.
i see love.
and being loved.
color.
life.
dreams.
strength.
JOY.
courage.
creativity.
focus.
change.
FUN.

this year i found out how to love my kids deeper than i ever have.
this parenthood stuff is HARD and crazy amazing all at once.
it’s no joke.
and i am so proud to be their mom even when things get hard.
I’m happy to walk through life beside them too.

this year i realized i had dreams in my heart i hadn’t validated.
after a little working through what that means… 2015 is the year to make them happen.
i feel like jesus is saying “enough stalling Meg!”

what i reflect on again and again is thatĀ through it all God is so good!!
that doesn’t mean everythingĀ is perfect.
it’s not.
life is messy. Ā (sometimes a complete disaster!)
everyone has struggles.
no one is alone in that.
but God’s Grace covers all of it.
He takes ourĀ offering of brokenness, weakness and failure and FLIPS it upside down.
HeĀ says “i love you. You are mine. You are new.”
we are not our mistakes.
we are not our past.
we are not what people think of us.
we are made new through Him.
God is good. Ā He gives me HOPE. Ā He carries me through.

bring on 2015.
i am ready.

(i think… maybe just a quick nap first)

Kellyn - just thank you. Thanks for being you!! that is all šŸ˜‰
have a blessed craft weekend!

Lori - I never get tired of your beautiful photos!

Courtney - Those photos are soo great! It was the motivation I needed! I have to print mine out and take more in 2015! Time just slips by way too fast. Great documentation of your year! Congrats!

annette - great post – i think taking pictures really helps us remember where we have been… wondering where you got your ‘Jesus loves me’ t-shirt?

Sue Linse - Love the pictures Megan! (does anyone call you ‘Megan’ anymore?…or is it just Meg. Anyway – only comment – love any picture of Stanley – SO cute. And Annie is freaking Adorable – should be modeling for GAP or something. Miss you as always šŸ™‚

jennibell - Wow. What a beautiful, reflective post. You are inspirational to so many Meg!!!

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - So many beautiful smiles! And I can’t wait to watch your dreams unfold!

Melissa - Amen! Here’s to 2015

Carol S. - I like your photos and perspective. You’re one of my favorite bloggers…real…colorful…most important, faithful. My blogging schedule has been reduced to one a year, lol. I don’t know how you do it, but sure am glad you do. Jealous of all your adorable pics with hubby. My husband ducks when camera comes out!

Kimberlee Jost - I loved all of the pictures!

amy jupin - i share so many of these same thoughts and emotions, especially in the message i keep hearing from jesus.
“don’t be afraid. stretch, grow, follow your passions!”
i push it down again and again.
what does it possibly mean?
what if i blow it?
we need to follow his lead and fight for our dreams!
they are important. so, so important!
i am with you, friend.
i am for you too.
happy new year meg!

Tammy - Happy New Year! Thanks for always being such an inspiration Meg!

Amy - Cheers to 2015! I’ve loved following along with you here and on Instagram. Thanks for sharing your life with us!

Lisa - Well said! Here’s to 2015!

one week later….

alright.
so it’s been a whole week since i blogged.
that’s a long time!
craig said “soooo… are you EVER going to blog again?”
to which i turned and unleashed a long string of LEAVE ME ALONE!!! I AM BUSY! HOW DARE YOU’s on him like a sweet wife does when called out on her slacking.

let’s see… this past week has been bonkers with activities.
just like at your house i assume.
i schedule appointments for each of my kids in december (eye dr…dentisit… etc)Ā and then we do their christmas shopping for their siblings afterwards.
one on one.
we started this a few years ago.shop
half of the fun for themĀ isĀ the lunch stopĀ i think!
in the pastĀ 9 days I’ve eaten at chipotle 4 times and Chili’s once.
it’s really sweet to watch them shop trying to decide what theirĀ sisters or brothers would like… within their budget.
we do a “matching” program (in a way). Ā i pay for it all and then they pay me back most (70-ish%) of it.
i don’t make them pay it all back to meĀ because i like their big hearts and wanting to get nice(r) gifts for people they spend most days fighting with.
it gives me hope.
maybe they will like each other when they grow up??
šŸ™‚

ever since annie was home sick on thanksgiving break we have been recording The Price Is Right on the dvr.
priceisright
she comes home from school and watches it.
EVERY DAY.
it’s such a clean show! (other than the dresses on the lady models….)
and i may or may not get teary eyes when they win the big showcase and they seem like they may pass out.
did you know there is even a MALE model on the show now?!
i think you should watch over christmas break.
bring back all the old memories of summer and being a kidĀ in the 80’s!

COME ON DOOOOOOWN!

JB2
JB1
my girlfriends and i ran in the jingle bell run again this year!
every year we try to think of reasons not to do it but honestly… the spa time afterwards makes any race worth it.
this year i ran the whole thing!
last year i did too but that was purely to stay warm because last year it was 3 degrees!
this year was cold but not like that.
and you would think i would be on an excerise high from doing so well in the run (not because of speed but because of not walking) but you would be wrong in that thinking!
i have a terrible time getting exercise into my day.
but i won’t give up this battle.
i just keep hoping i will become a lover of exercise.
someday….

IMG_4460
i have a thing for peppermint.
we are BFFs all the way.
so believe me when i say i have bought so many boxes of these k-cups from target it’s not even funny.
i am stockpiling them.
because they will be gone and i will have to go back to my secondĀ favorite flavor of coconut mocha in january.
what i am really craving is peppermint ice cream.
and i DID purchase Peppermint Mini Oreos this week because i plan to make a milkshake with peppermint ice cream AND the mini oreos at some point in the next week.
because it’s once a year and resistance is futile.

two weekends ago craig asked me if i wanted to hang up a new light?
swoon.
that is like whispering sweet nothings in my ear.
so we pulled out the old, dusty, bentĀ up chandelier i got at the barn forever ago,Ā figured out if it still worked and he even took all the crystals off for me!
i cleaned it and painted it and then last weekend he hung it up!
IMG_4728
and while he did that i sewed new curtains.
theĀ black and white gingham fabric is by the yard at ikea.
iĀ moved the curtains i had in the dining room into the kitchen.
that big straight lined pattern was SO EASY i said “i don’t ever want to sew anything without lines again!”

IMG_4738IMG_4940

on IG people keep asking for a christmas home tour.
that’s a great idea but i am waiting for my cleaning lady to come and then i will take pictures.
she is the best part of my week.
pretty much every week.
šŸ™‚
in case you wondered… she cleans the kitchen, living/dining room, guest bath and my room/bathroom.
my kids still have to clean their own rooms, the family room and their shared bathroom.
skills they need in life.
i want them to learn to do the work.
because i still have to clean stuff everyday. Ā all kinds of things!
it feels like i never stop cleaning (you feel this way too right? please say yes!)
it’s NEVERĀ ending.
i appreciate the professional cleaning help every week more than i can explain.

ok…. one last thing today.
christmas cards.
are you sending them?
i used to be a rock star at christmas cards.
but i am not any more.
so IF i was going to send a card it would be this one:

chrsitmaspic-tiff
(this design was on MPIX)

but…. even though i am total slacker in the card mailing department… maybe you aren’t?
if you wanted to send me a christmas card i would be thrilled!
alsoĀ we have moved twice in three years… so NO ONE knows our address anymore.
and i miss christmas cards!
so if you want to send me your christmas card… Ā send me a quick email at megduerksen@gmail.com and i will giveĀ my address to you.
i really will.

(and i f you are thinking WHY would i ever sendĀ Meg a christmas card?? i get that and there is NO PRESSURE whatsoever to do this weirdo project. Ā just an idea that popped into my head. i knowĀ that not all my ideas are great šŸ™‚ )

Lynda Anderson - I just moved, too! I’ve received three cards, one was a relative, one was my realtor and one was a friend through whom I order Mary Kay. šŸ™‚ I feel your pain. Of course, I haven’t even started my cards yet … no, really, I haven’t even taken the photo I want to use for the cards. I always send Happy New Year cards. Takes some of the pressure off.

Merry Christmas to you and your family. You are a true inspiration!

Lucy - I am a cleaning lady and I applaud you that you make your kids clean their rooms etc. So many people don’t make their kids do anything. They need these life skills I agree!
merry Christmas and Love the chandelier and curtains.

Patti - You’re so funny…receiving Christmas cards from your faithful followers, even though most are strangers. But I have an idea of what you can do with all the cards you will undoubtedly get. I heard this idea from one of our parish priests, and have practiced it for a few years now. After the holidays, we put all the cards in a basket by our kitchen table and when we say grace, one of our kids picks a card out of it and we say a special blessing for that family. Sometimes the same family is prayed for many times over throughout the year and I always think how maybe God knows they need extra prayers! It’s a fun and wonderful way to keep Christmas blessings going the whole year through. And that being said, “Merry Christmas to you and your beautiful family!”

Annette - Meg-
Merry Christmas! I have read your blog for years and don’t remember how I got started. Alot of the craziness that goes on in your life I can relate to. I too have 5 children – 2 boys and three girls. I love anything crafts, I have an Etsy store and love the lord. I was reading your blog for several years before I realized both our husbands work at the same bank.

Keep up the good work with your blogs they are an inspiration to me and literally make me laugh out loud sometimes.

Merry Christmas and the most blessed new year!
Annette

Linda Mullen - Hi Meg, been reading your blog for ages and have loved sharing it with my daughter (especially the art projects you do with your kiddos) over the years! Would love to send you a Christmas card….especially since I am just getting around to that and despairing that once again we’re sending non-photo versions, because really, the tree just got up and we’re looking for last minute gingerbread houses–your blog inspires me and I love your open heart! Best to you and your family!

Michelle - Have I told you lately that I love your blog. Yup – its true. Even when you don’t blog for a week. Because I totally get that. I am down with the cleaning lady too. Merry Christmas Meg!

angela - Sent you an email! Would love to send you a card!! P.S. I have eaten a bowl of peppermint ice cream every. single. night. since December 1. I will go in withdrawals on the 31st!

Tanya H - So, I am TOTALLY showing the paragraph about the cleaning lady to my 9yr old who, after flat out refusing to her weekly jobs today, and then threw a fit about having to do jobs before fun plans, snapped to her father and I that WE never do ANY jobs in the house EVER. Ahem. Are you KIDDING ME??? Sigh…

I too used to rock Christmas cards…but I have spent a good chunk of my day addressing and writing in cards and I’m wondering how worth it is, LOL. Its my favorite thing to get cards, so I should, oh…and its my business…lol, but between three dozen wrong addresses, and the fact that it’s 12/20…this is nuts!! šŸ™‚

I also have to comment on The Price Is Right. šŸ™‚ My husband loved that show as a kid, and when my kids were tiny and he worked weird hours, he loved being home at that time random days, he’d commandeer PBS Kids or Nick Jr to watch that. My kids were never as entertained as he was, haha…

Anyway, good for you on the race…I keep hoping I will learn to enjoy working out too…I try, and I have to believe that’s good enough for today. Merry Christmas, if you don’t blog again before then! šŸ™‚

Heather S. - Meg, I would LOVE to send you one of Christmas cards!!! I have one for you, truly I do. I will pop it in the mail when I have your address. šŸ™‚ Though we’ve never met, I love you like a BFF. šŸ™‚ We are sisters in the Lord & one day I will hang out with you. If not here, then in heaven FOR sure. You are a treasure on so many levels.

Kirsten J - Dude – what an epic blog post! It was like a good catchup over coffee with an old friend šŸ™‚
Listen, I was at my PTA co-president’s house Thursday for our Board meeting/Christmas luncheon and she had so many cards on her mantle. I was a little jealous, because I’ve received maybe…6? And so I commented about it. Leslie says, “well, how many do you, send? I send out about 125-140” ummmm…..let’s see….so far they aren’t even ordered, and so they’ll probably get picked up at Walgreens Tuesday morning and I’ll address them in the parking lot. Ugh. Maybe that’s why. And I couldn’t really whine about the PTA president job being so busy because she’s my co! AND she hosted the luncheon!!! But I’ll totally send you one – email coming.

Kerri Lynne - Several thoughts on this great post: 1) My dad was a teacher and you reminded me of when we watched game shows together over Christmas break – there were LOTS of game shows in those days. 2) IKEA has FABRIC? I still have not made it to the new one in KC, and it’s only an hour away… 3) I love sending/receiving Christmas cards, but will not be doing ours this year until after we return from a 10-day trip to Israel (leaving a few days after Christmas!). 4) Gorgeous chandelier! Oh, saw your son’s name on a list of 3A football honors – congratulations to him!

Alicia @ Investing Love - Your posts are always so beautifully random, and I connect with that so much, that it always evokes in me a completely random comment back…so, here goes:
a. I love the productivity going on, light hanging, curtain sewing…perfect. And the green + black check combo is a TEN!

b. Sophia and Jack have recently become OBSESSED with the Price is Right. I’m like, really!?! Also, Let’s Make a Deal. I’m all, are y’all 86?? But they don’t care…they love it. And they want to go on it and win all the things.

c. I used to have a cleaning lady…when I had a house. I missed her more than my mother when we moved away to North Carolina. Really. She was a godsend. Now that we’re house shopping again I just really hope I can find another good lady. It’s such a lifesaver.

d. I am totally sending you a Christmas card. Totally.

Flower Patch Farmgirl - 1) I did NOT know you and Peppermint are BFFs. What???! Guess what…me and peppermint are enemies. Go figure.
2) I love the dentist idea and one-on-one time. I always take all 3 at once and then we despair.
3) Do you have any idea how many good ideas you’ve given me over the years? Poodles. (That word is courtesy of my mom.)

Carol S. - Love that during this busy holiday period you can not post for a week. That is getting your priorities straight! Then a fun post that was worth the wait. Wonderful time with your kids, can’t get that back. Going slow over here and it’s just fine. With high schooler and college kid a lot of the pressure to create Christmas magic is gone, and I am totally cool with that. I’ve got 4 gifts for each of my two boys, and I’m pretty cool with that…really need one more each…hate for me to have purchased more gifts under tree for me than them! Chipotle gift cards may fill the ticket. Enjoy your blog. Merry Christmas Meg.

Jenn - Love the dining room curtains! That bold gingham grounds everything else in the room. Love! Now, about those Christmas cards. We, too, have moved a lot – four times in four years! I have simply given up. With all the moving no one can find us, and with all the moving I can’t find my address book. So we, too, are cardless this year. Which makes me happy to have your beautiful blog from which to wish you and your family and anyone reading this a very joyous, merry, blessed Christmas and a bright, happy, and healthy New Year! Thank you, Meg, for another year of sharing your thoughts and ideas with us through one of my all time favorite blogs to read. Merry Christmas!

Vonda - Love peppermint lattes!!!! And your house is looking amazing-of course:) I’m thinking your mailman will have a huge santa bag of cards for you;)! Merry Christmas!

jamie - i’m thinking about doing new year’s cards. they seem to be all the rage…

Becky Fouts - boy, am I glad you posted today!!! I read everything you write, and missed you this past week! Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Lisa - I love the idea of scheduling appts in December and then taking the kids out to lunch and shop for their siblings! I am totally going to copy this next year. Such a great idea for alone time and help them have fun giving!

Heidi DeGroot - Random question–What kind of vacuum do you use and is it good for the dogs and the kids to clean up all the messes?

Gevay Piercefield - Trader Joe’s has peppermint hot chocolate and peppermint JoeJoes (their version of Oreos) , and my friend gave me Starbucks instant peppermint mocha latte packets today, and Dove makes peppermint chocolate squares and it seems I have a problem too! Sending you an email because I would like to send my peppermint loving buddy a card! Merry Christmas!

chrissi - your dining room…….the best! each detail is perfect. buffalo check in black and white, it just doesn’t get any better. merry christmas, enjoy each moment.

Rachel Jeter - And now, you are going to receive approximately 743 Christmas Cards šŸ™‚ Remember a post on your blog from long ago, talking a little bit about your love Christmas Cards and how you would make Craig bring them home from work? Even his coworkers cards? Yeah, I remember that too. And yes, I do that too. I don’t know why I love them, I just do. May you have the merriest of Christmases with no Christmas Eve breakdowns Meg šŸ™‚
And since I’m commenting, have you done Marta’s “Sugar Detox”?? I feel like you were doing that when I came to craft weekend in May, but I can’t fully remember. Did you love it? Would you do that again? I’m signing my hubby and I up for January. (Typing this while eating Christmas cookies.)

Becky - I’m with on the whole price is right thing! I get totally choked up seeing anybody win anything! sappy people unite šŸ™‚

Jen - Just sent you and e-mail and will totally send you a card! I have contemplated not sending them, but decided to again this year. I am in love with peppermint, also. I love the taste and smell. I am actually drinking a cup of peppermint tea right now. Have a wonderful weekend, Meg!

Julie - Love that chandelier and those curtains. I am hoping to get brave enough to make some in 2015, maybe gingham will be the way to go. Cleaning is never done, and unfortunately it doesn’t seem to matter how many people are in the house either, the mess is still the same.
I too would love a Christmas tour of your house, always so interesting seeing how you decorate for a Northern hemisphere winter Christmas, while we have a Southern hemisphere summer one.

Necole@seriouslysassymama - Peppermint and I are BFFs also.

Barbara (WA) - I totally get the “swoon”!! And the professional cleaning help. A year ago September our son got married in our back yard. For 6 weeks I had weekly cleaners while I worked outside – it was awesome! I have a broken wrist presently but can still dust, darn. And I did send photo cards but then, I can’t bake. or cook, or. . .

Tracy - I’ve read your blog for a loooong time but don’t comment very often but I will definitely send you a Xmas card. You need Xmas cards in your mailbox!! We live in Kansas City and we’re Jayhawks, too šŸ™‚ Now you know me well enough to receive a Xmas card from me! Haha! Emailing you now.

Amy - Your dining room is beautiful! It looks like the perfect place to have a cup of candy cane coffee. šŸ˜‰ I would love to send you a Christmas card. It is my favorite Christmas card to date because it is our first Christmas as a family of three. Yay!!!

fresh air

IMG_4174IMG_4179
we met up with my parents last weekend for some outdoor fun and a picnic.
sean was gone at camp… it’s weird when there are only three kids with us!
we tried to catch crawfish, climbed on the rocks and explored.IMG_4180IMG_4190IMG_4206IMG_4209
IMG_4211IMG_4215IMG_4220
annie found me the Ultimate heart rock but then we dropped it and it broke. Ā šŸ™
IMG_4223IMG_4227IMG_4231IMG_4237IMG_4238IMG_4239
it was too hot NOT to jump in for just a bit.

IMG_4248IMG_4249
on the drive home craig let me stop for some photos of beautiful places.
i love the rust…the chipped paint… the washed out wood…LOVE!

IMG_4251IMG_4253IMG_4254IMG_4257IMG_4260IMG_4258IMG_4263IMG_4265
getting out of the house… exploring new places… it always feels good.

i should get outside again today!

tara // etsetara - o meg, this post makes me miss joplin!
we moved to NYC two weeks ago and i haven’t seen enough green around here. =]

thanks for the lovely photos.

Janet - Isn’t the school in Marion County off 50 Highway?

Lori - So sad about the heart rock. At least you have a picture of it. My kids find heart rocks for me too. My 6 year old boy brought me one today and said “mommy I found you a heart rock but it was muddy so I washed it off in a mud puddle and dried it on my shirt. ” Sweet boy. Oh and the old, rusty forgotten places make me so happy too.I need to stop along the way to enjoy them as well.

colleen - You are good … photography is awesome.. so glad craig let you stop… we are all the richer!

Jen - District 34 schoolhouse…hmmm…my grandma is from Chapman. Was this anywhere near there?

Mel - You have such a great eye – for color, for photos, for arrangement – I always love seeing the world from your point of view.

Julie - Looks like you all had a fabulous day. Love all those old rustic buildings, so sad that many of them are abandoned.

chasity - so many beautiful photos.
looks like a wonderful day.

Traci - That’s a beautiful heart rock! I always look out for heart shaped rocks too, for some reason. You’ll have more. :]

we could hear frogs a block away so we went for a walk to find them.
the dogs joined us.
and Spanky always comes on our walks too…. such a funny cat.
i think she would LOVE if we got her a leash.
seriously.
IMG_3837IMG_3838IMG_3843IMG_3860IMG_3845IMG_3848
this puddle was FULL of tadpoles!
they were finding so many!IMG_3852IMG_3994
then another night they found and caught a big frog.
they were so proud!
i love that they will get dirty and enjoy exploring nature.
IMG_3995IMG_4002IMG_4003
IMG_4001IMG_4012
IMG_8002

then one night we had a big storm and my mom found this BIG green frog in our window well.
it was a little beat up… i assume it was from trying to jump out of the window well for hours.
talby rescued it and took it back to the creek.IMG_8005IMG_8007
what odd creatures.
i mean look at that thing…. the eye balls. Ā the feet. Ā the “fingers”

W E I R D O S.

Cathy - I really enjoy your blog. I’m just getting back into mine after a long time off.? I love the shabby chic of your craftroom in the craft house. Can you show us pics of your new craftroom? Can you come shabby mine up?

Janae Mettling - How fun! My girls LOVE catching frogs and toads! After each rain we always have some in the pit of our walkout basement. We have lots of fun pictures of frogs and toads. I love that they aren’t afraid to get dirty and have some fun!

Amy Mak - Love your blog! The frog picture is insanely awesome and I love your new/old coop. We have chickens and love the fresh eggs even though my children are not quite as enthused about doing any of the work anymore šŸ™‚ Enjoy your beautiful place.

Chris - Glad Talby rescued the big guy!

Lisa - The fingers is right…..yuck! Don’t touch it!!!! šŸ˜‰

Gevay Piercefield - Looks like fun! Your girls are brave. šŸ™‚

Christy - This reminds me of growing up in MO. Love the pictures! Stanley is getting so big!

PS. Is it wrong that I immediately thought FROG LEGS?! Not that I would ever consider eating them now that I live out West, but I remeber that was a big deal growing up. Now I think EWWW!

Tiffany - To add to the above… We have so many around our house I have to walk real slow when cutting the lawn to wait for them to hop out of the way. Last week when mowing I felt like I stepped on something squishy. I turned to see I stepped on a frog! That I mowed over!!! I felt A W E F U L!! (And grossed out!) So I killed the motor, ran away, and left the rest of the mowing till the next day, when I wore my rubber boots instead of flip-flops. šŸ˜›

Tiffany - My 6 year old Olivia is obsessed with catching frogs. I love that she isn’t scared of them and getting dirty. Exploring nature is the best!

Hannah - Can’t wait to be able to take Blueberry on adventures – I imagine that Chris will be leading the troops when it comes to that. I used to work in a builder’s merchants and we’d find little frogs hiding in the pallets of sand bags – on at least 3 occasions I caught little frogs hopping their way towards the tills and nearly getting squashed by trolleys. I used to get told off for rescuing them……

our best father’s day gift

of course i have no ideas about what to do THIS father’s day for Ā my husband but i thought i would tell you the BEST gift we have ever found for Craig in past father’s days.

he loves ice cream.
L O V E S.

about 4 years ago now… we got him a homemade ice cream machine!

photo-64
he is not into gifts or celebrating really but he was surprised and very happy with this gift.
which made me so happy!
(i AM into gifts and celebrating so when someone loves my gift… it’s a gift to ME!)

he makes really yummy ice cream too!
we even took it on vacation with us so we could make ice cream there too.

it’s the kind of machine that turns & turns, is really loud and you fill the outside with lots of ice and salt.
it is the sound of summer.
does that make you think of your childhood?
i don’t even remember WHERE we had homemade ice cream when i was a kid… but i remember the machines.
i have one memory of an ice cream party outside the library in the town we moved from when i was 7.
i can see it from a short 7 year old’s perspective… everyone is tall… the building across the street is tall… and there is LOTS of ice cream right at eye level on folding tables.

šŸ™‚

anyways… back to the ice cream MACHINE.
i chose the White Mountain Ice Cream MakerĀ based off reviews from my friends of what is “the best”.
also because we have a big family so 1 – 2 quarts of ice cream isn’t even enough for each of us to get a bowl.
so i went for the big machine… that is electric… not hand crank.
this machine is pricey but from what everyone says, they last forever.
i wanted it to last through my kids childhood. i wanted to create a memory for them.
making homemade ice cream, outside on the porch, on a summer night… that’s the good stuff.

if you wanted something quieter, smaller, sleeker and i guessing much less messy… you could try this one.
it makes 2 quarts each time.

Dairy-Free Ice Cream: 75 RecipesĀ

i tasted it.
it was U N R E A L.
how is that not a flavor in the store?!!!
how are they not making millions off of Chocolate Cookies & Cream?!!
what is wrong with the ice cream makers of the world?!

šŸ™‚

what is your favorite flavor ice cream?

and help me…. what should i get craig this year for father’s day???

Whitney - What a fun gift! Our summer bucket list includes breaking out the ice cream maker. As for ice cream flavors- The Ice Cream Factory in my hometown in Maine makes Chocolate Fudge Oreo (chocolate ice cream with oreos and a fudge swirl) it’s my favorite! And makes an awesome milkshake! (They also have terrific flavors like Cherry Seinfeld- chocolate ice cream with white chocolate chips and bing cherries! Yum, now I want to drive the half hour to them and make my own sundae with chocolate fudge oreo!)

Valerie - I have the Sweet Dreams and Sugar Cones book and I really like the recipes I’ve tried – salted caramel and the chocolate using dark chocolate are my favorites. I’d like to try Jeni’s and the Perfect Scoop sometime because I hear them recommended as well.

marcie - Get him a gigantic (like laundry basket-sized) basket of every type of ice cream topping known to man and then y’all can try new combos and make memories all Summer long! My dad adores ice cream and the old-fashioned hand churn is a major Summer memory for me.BTW, my dad orders his hot fudge topping by the case from some fancy-schmancy place and he is not like that at all except when it comes to his ice cream – so go for the toppings!!! Happy Summer!!

Jermaine D. - I would add my FAVORITE cook book of all time: Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home. They are smaller batches, so you’d probably have to double for a big family, but they are SO GOOD! She goes into the chemistry of making good ice cream and these actually have a great texture after freezing, unlike the typical icy vanilla homemade ice cream, which is best eaten right away. She also has a new desserts cookbook out. I also have a bigger Hamilton Beach ice cream maker that has worked well for 5+ years! Hmm, I am already dreaming up which flavor ice cream to make next…

Tiffany - Oh, Meg… an ice cream post?! Just when I didn’t think I could like you more. šŸ™‚

I’m into gifting experiences. We have enough stuff. We are taking my husband sailing. He has talked about wanting to do it forever. Not sure if Craig would be into that, but doing something special and unique as a family is such a wonderful gift.

Kim - We had a mixer similar to the Hamilton Beach for about 10 years until part of it got lost in a move. We now have the Hamilton Beach and it has worked well for about 3 years now (granted, we only use it about 3-4 times per year) but for our needs it’s great. Our first ice cream machine came with a recipe book and one of our favorites is the cinnamon ice cream! Yum!!

Sarah - You have just given me one more reason to want a Kitchen Aid! Why oh why did I not ask for one back when we were getting married. It’s so much harder to convince the hubby I need one now when I’ve already survived nine years of marriage without. I think the idea of just having an attachment to store for making the ice cream is such a great idea. I get kind of annoyed by large appliances taking up room on my shelves.

My husband’s favorite Father’s Day present was a root beer sampler I put together for him a few years ago. I bought a ton of root beer in glass bottles. I tried to get a dozen different brands, but couldn’t find quite that many. He loved it and it has become a yearly tradition (and shopping challenge for me). This year he just asked for music, but I am thinking about getting him a bunch of stuff to organize his tools and work bench area. Not looking at that messy eyesore every time I need to borrow a tape measure would be a great gift for both of us. šŸ™‚

Sarah{Handbags*and*Pigtails} - I bought that 2 QT Cuisinart ice cream maker above from a neighbor’s yard sale a few years ago- 5 bucks! We made so much ice cream that year! So don’t forget to check yard sales. People clean out and don’t want unused appliances taking up space in their kitchen. Ice cream makers can be one of those if you don’t use it enough. šŸ™‚ Happy creaming everyone!

colleen - So, I looked up father’s day gifts in kansas… u have to check this out! out!http://www.cloud9living.com/kansas-city/popular-experience-gifts
Personally I think the hot air balloon ride is a good one…. bet he’s never done it before!
so funny!

Julie - We really love homemade ice cream at our house too, but so far every machine has been a dud or more work that it appears to be. We had the Cuisinart soft serve maker, but a lot of the plastic pieces broke apart after less than a year, it was hard to clean and took up too much valuable space in our freezer — so it got dumped. šŸ™
For your ice-cream loving husband, you could splurge for Father’s Day and order him something from ecreamery.com! Their shop is here in Omaha, NE, but they ship anywhere, and you can even “create” your own flavors and ice cream names. (If anyone is coming in to town for the College World Series, it is a fun place to stop!)

Cheryl Jaeger - Thank you for this post. I had no idea the KitchenAid mixer had an attachment for making ice cream. Where have I been?!?!

Tanya H - Sooo my grandparents had a tradition of making homemade ice cream for all birthdays, which ended up being a once-a-month event when I was a kid. My family had moved away so my dad carried on the tradition for us. He does raspberry, strawberry or peach, but the #1 requested by my mom and siblings is oreo. For my wedding, we were given a machine like the Hamilton Beach white that you’ve shown. My husband found a recipe book by Ben & Jerry’s and that was what we gave as wedding gifts for a long time- an ice cream machine and the book!
I think we went thru two of that style in the first 6 years of our marriage and we’re currently “in the market” for something better. The second one was broken when we loaned it out.
You can find the book here: http://www.amazon.com/Jerrys-Homemade-Cream-Dessert-Book/dp/0894803123/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1402502245&sr=1-1&keywords=ben+%26+jerry%27s

Heather - LOVE homemade ice cream. My mom likes to remind us that “back in the day” they had to sit on top of them while someone else cranked them. If you haven’t tried some chopped up Snickers in plain ol’ vanilla, give it a whirl. It is yummy. I prefer waffle cones! And we got my husband a fishing cart and we are headed to the beach and pier to let him fish to his heart’s content. Maybe the family could take in a baseball game together and head to your favorite ice cream shop afterwards? I think experiences are just as good as traditional gifts sometimes!

Heather S. - LOVE ice cream. Too much. It’s my food achilles heel. I can turn down any dessert except that. The cake lady above? I’m her polar opposite. Hold the cake, just give me the ice cream. We should do birthday parties together. šŸ™‚
Faves: mint chip, cookies and cream, espresso chip (my mother in law makes this THE BEST).
We have an ice cream maker we’ve had since we got married 15 years ago. Something is wrong with it and it’s no longer working. I took that as a sign that I should stop making ice cream, but now I;m eye-balling that Cuisinart one as you are the second person to mention it to me this week. I like that it makes *less* – that means less temptation.

Amy Huff - Summering with my Grandparents in Eureka, KS meant lots of ice cream outside but we got to crank it! Luckily there were a lot of Grandkids.

I have both of those ice cream books, I’m also a lover a gorgeous covers, but the best recipes I’ve found are in The Perfect Scoop book by David Lebovitz. So yummy!
http://www.amazon.com/The-Perfect-Scoop-Granitas-Accompaniments/dp/158008219X

Jen - My husband actually asked for TIES this year!!

Malinda - Love the KitchenAid, but I think you could DIY it!

http://lifeasiknowit-blog.com/2014/06/paint-kitchen-aid-mixer.html

Jen - We have the same ice cream machine. It is loud (!), but makes great ice cream! We are on our second motor, however. I love mint chocolate chip, but we always make vanilla in our ice cream machine. My husband is getting a power washer this Father’s Day.

Beth Ann - We were on vacation in the Ozarks a few years ago and bought a cheapo sunbeam one while on vacation (it was on clearance at Walmart for like $10 or something crazy cheap, we were looking for pool toys). We made ice cream on the patio overlooking the lake. I had completely forgotten about it and it is sitting in my basement as I type this. I need to get it out today. My kids and I are going to a pick-your-own strawberry farm and I think that ice cream and strawberries sound great! I might need to whip up an angel food cake quick too! Does anyone have any favorite ice cream recipes they’d care to share?

Kirsten J - Ok (whispering here) – I really don’t care for ice cream. A taste here or there, maybe, and maybe fudge brownie something or other once in a great while. At parties I always say “cake only, please” and people think I’m nuts. But my family knows that little quirk about me. Also, smoothies make me gag. Although….you triggered a memory, and when I first started dating my hubby, 35 years ago, they had an ice cream maker. And I think that would be an excellent Fathers Day gift – off to check them out!

Tammy - Google how to make Crush ice cream. Trust me, it is delicious. Especially with pineapple. You are welcome. yes, it’s that good!

Heidi - I have a cuisinart and I love it. Another great ice cream recipe book that I loooove… The Jeni’s ice cream recipe book. Hers is the best base, hands down.

Amy Woods - We love making ice cream! It is definitely a summer tradition for us. And we always, ALWAYS, take our ice cream maker with us on vacation. Do you have Big Red soda in Kansas? If so, mix 1 can of condensed milk per 2L of Big Red. Not really ice “cream” but it is a favorite of ours. We’ve done it with Root Beer too! šŸ˜‰

Dawn Gross - Mint chocolate chip! Or teaberry. Or choc peanut butter cup. We had an ice cream maker when I was a kid — that we only used in the winter. We used snow. It was LOUD.

Dawn

Jenny B. - Fun! We used to make homemade ice cream at my grandma’s house every year on the Fourth of July. It’s my favorite holiday. We had both an electric ice cream maker and an old hand crank one. Sometimes to get the best results, we would start a batch in the electric one, and then move it to the hand cranker. You had to sit on it and put ALL your muscle into it. We took turns. šŸ™‚ It was always soupy, but oh so yummy. Nothing else really like it. When I was little and my grandparents still had their huge garden, all the kids would go pick strawberries so we could have them with the vanilla ice cream. YUM.

Jessica - We love making homemade ice cream! I got the ample hill creamery book for Mother’s Day. Lots of neat ideas & flavors. But I was disappointed with the amount of ice cream the base recipe produces. We have a family of 5 & it barely made enough for each of us to have 2 small scoops. Our favorite flavor is either vanilla or chocolate with frozen chopped ding dongs mixed in, delicious!

lorel - A couple years ago Kevin’s aunt gave us the Cuisinart soft serve machine -maybe I’ll have to bring it when we visit! It’s a lot of fun. Those spaces on the left hold toppings and as the crank turns, you open the spigot, and with each rotation, little portions of toppings drip out, along with the ice cream.

MollyL - Actually it happens to be my current favorite ice cream at Baskin Robbins. It is chocolate with chunks of chocolate and oreo in it. I LOVE it! We will have to try Oreos in a shake this summer.

Michelle Whitlow - I LOVE homemade ice cream!!! I have a cheapo Sunbeam one I bought at Target a few years ago and so far it’s holding up. I really want to get the Cuisinart one or the attachment for my Kitchen aid. I keep holding out for Mother’s Day but clearly my family hasn’t gotten the hint šŸ˜‰ Cuisinart had a lime green colored one that I wanted SO bad but I haven’t seen it in a while so I’m not sure if they’re still making it in that color.

Deb Meyers - voila! paint your hutch the color of that mixer!

Jennifer - I have that white mountain passed downed from my grandfather which he used when I was a kid, so I’d say you can expect it to last!
Also, you need this cookbook! http://www.amazon.com/Jenis-Splendid-Ice-Creams-Home/dp/1579654363
If you haven’t had Jeni’s and ever get the chance, do it!

PaisleyJade - Drooling through this whole post! We have chocolate icecream with cookies in here in New Zealand! Mmmmmm!

Becky - I have the kitchen aid attachment and I LOVE it! It’s super convenient because it just hangs out in your freezer…you don’t need to mess with ice. It’s almost TOO convenient šŸ˜‰

miranda - Just bought that soft serve ice cream maker for Father’s Day. I kinda want it too. Haaa!!

Kelly - Oh my goodness!!!! THANK YOU!! I am going to get my husband that kitchen aid attachment and one of the recipe books for Father’s Day!! Ice cream (and cooking) are his THING!

Fay - We have that exact White Mountain. My parents have the hand crank abd we love to use it when we’re visiting them. Best quality ice cream maker out there! Our favorite flavor is Milky Way – tastes a lot like a Frosty. YUM!

Stephanie - I love that you husband was thrilled with a ice cream maker!
My husband will be out of town for Father’s Day this year, and was two years ago too. šŸ™ so I am looking for ways to make his day special long distance!
I am kinda horrible with knowing what to buy people. I hope you find the perfect gift for Craig!

april r - So ice cream that’s homemade, is it any healthier than store bought? I’m guessing it would be . . . that self serve machine is rad (and slightly scary)

Best wishes on finding a great Father’s Day gift.
My guy loves movies so we’ll get movie tickets. And a professional car wash is something that’s a splurge for him too. We live near the beach and sometimes that’s what we do instead of gifts – just spend all day on the beach.
Maybe thinking like that – events, concerts, service, etc will help you find the right thing this year šŸ™‚

Tammy - You need to look up Jeni’s Ice Cream. She is an Ohio favorite and has the best unique flavors. I think she has two books out!

i knew they would be great.

for mother’s day i asked for help with the yard work at the craft house.
and it was perfect.
there was minimal fighting and complaining.
everyone stuck to their jobs and the weather was lovely.
i worked on the hill in the bottom right corner of this picture.
i was pulling weeds and looked up and a tough looking man was looking at me.
he was covered in tattoos… shaved head…huge white t-shirt.
i smiled at him from down in the weeds.
he said “i’m disappointed you are here because i saw these flowers yesterday and was coming back to steal some.”
i smiled bigger and said “how about i just GIVE you some?”
he was shocked.
“are you serious?”
“YES! they are too pretty to keep to myself! What am i going to do with all of these flowers?!”
“ARE YOU SERIOUS!?”
i gave him some scissors and he was kind of frozen.
he cut two and i said “here… let me help you”
we chatted about where he was from, where he works, his kids, where he lives.
and i cut and cut and cut.
i gave him a huge bouquet of fresh cut flowers for his girlfriend who he said was upset with him.
he said thank you so many times and i said “be sure to call your kids today ok?!”

i gotta be honest… it was THE BEST moment of my mother’s day.
it just felt so good to GIVE.
my flowers and my smile and kind words too.

all my kids were home for dinner on mother’s day.
i enjoyed that quite a bit… obviously.Ā IMG_6786IMG_6802IMG_6569IMG_6568IMG_6828IMG_6848IMG_6834IMG_6835IMG_6852

last night craig, annie and i took the dogs on a long walk.
the yellow kitty followed us.
THE WHOLE WAY!
it was hysterical.
i said these three were like the real life Homeword Bound.

we have handles on our drawers and cabinets doors!!
woo-hoo!!!

IMG_6616
this guy turned 16.
this is just crazy. Ā how does this keep happening?!
we got him clothes and he spent a bunch of his birthday money on nike socks.
what will they come up with next?
can you imagine if we told our parents we were going to buy a $15 pair of socks?!
but there are few accessories for boys so nike decided socks were the way to go.

i like that guy.
he is going to be a really fun grown up.
šŸ™‚
IMG_3645IMG_6590IMG_6614
i asked him to come in with me so i didn’t have to buy the food myself for my mother’s day meal.
we were serenaded by whitney houston BLASTING through the freezer aisle.
saturday night at dillons is where it’s at.

tara - freezer aisle.
i think i misspelled it in the last comment, and it wouldn’t do for me to just leave it wrong.

tara - everything about this post was inspiring.
the words. the color. the stories. the pictures.
the thought of whitney houston on the freezer isle.
all of it.

Lisa - I loved reading this post. Especially about the tough guy wanting flowers. My husband is a tough looking, tattooed guy. šŸ˜‰

kristin - Your mother’s day flower story brought tears to my eyes. You are kind.

Melissa - Love that you gave the guy flowers. I bet you made his day! We did yard work for my mom for mother’s day also!

What I’m Reading | a glass of milk - […] whose lives don’t intersect with mine in many ways, but whose posts just make me happy.Ā  This is one of those […]

Mollie @Sprinkles of Life - I love your random, photo-filled posts about what your family is up to, Meg! And love seeing all your nature/flower pics!

I especially love seeing how you guys fill your warm summer days šŸ™‚ It came so fast this year, its crazy!! My daughter will be in 2nd grade next year. Where did the time go?!?

PS- *love* your white kitchen!! Gorgeous!

Katherine @ Grass Stains - Meg, I found the perfect mug for you a few months ago, and I bought it on a whim. I’d love to send it to you for you to keep, whether at the Craft House or your new home, if you’ll allow me to. I’ve been reading your blog for years and years, although I only comment occasionally. I think I sent you a direct photo of the mug on Instagram a while back … I can’t remember. Anyway, I’d love to mail it to you … it just screamed “MEGAN DUERKSEN” at me, and I had to get it. šŸ™‚

Flower Patch Farmgirl - “i gave him a huge bouquet of fresh cut flowers for his girlfriend who he said was upset with him.
he said thank you so many times and i said ā€œbe sure to call your kids today ok?!ā€

This just made me cry. And I already knew the story!!

Kerri - What Heather said!! She said it perfectly. And I love the peonies; the home we moved from 7 years ago had several pink and white peony bushes and I really miss them.

amy jupin - i know it’s silly but these are my favorite kinds of posts.
i love the pictures and the little bits of you sprinkled in between.
reminds me of the days when i searched for beauty everywhere.
i need to get back to doing that more often.
that’s where contentment is found.
in the every day.

Su - Your tattoo guy story sounds like a story from Love Does šŸ™‚

tinaehb3 - The flower story is the best!! And the Nike socks made laugh too…my boys are 9 & 11 and asked for Nike Elite socks for Easter and almost died when the cashier said my total was 36.00 for two pair of socks!! In my head I thought I will never tell anyone I just did this!!! Lol

KJ - I love it when God shows up as a tattooed man ready to snag some flowers, but instead leaves us with more of himself.
Reminds me of the homeless man at MCD’s…

Michele - Your peonies are so pretty. Here In north central Wisconsin I might not see mine until the 4th of July! I’m not kidding. The stems just started to peak out of the ground last week and are only like 2 inches high now. This winter was brutal. Considering it is 38 outside this fine Saturday morning….I don’t think they will speed up anytime soon!

Ana Hogan - You are so awesome! šŸ™‚

I bought that book on the kindle today. Hoping to read it on our mini road trip tomorrow.

Thank you for being an inspiration to momma’s… and women in general!

Tiffany - I loved the “tattoo guy” story. You have such a big heart! Happy Mother’s Day!

Kristin - The story about the man & the flowers just made my day. Beautiful!

Kelly - You’re so pretty! Love that last picture and LOVE the story about the man and the flowers! God is good!! Kelly

Traci - Looks like a colorful week, and full of good things! Also. That looks like such a sweet dog. I’m jealous!

Kirsten J - I love the tattooed man story. Good, good stuff. And. We’ve lived here 7 years and I still don’t have handles/knobs on everything. Oh, we bought them way back in the beginning, but it’s a chore that has yet to be completed. Although he did finally work on them a few weeks ago and only has a bathroom and a half to go. But. We’re one knob short. *sigh* hopefully that place is still in business and has more…..

Seriously Sassy Mama - Sounds like a nice week.

CassM - Meg, I spy a Vancouver Island Starbucks coffee mug in your cupboard! So do I! (Well, I live here …) Gift from a Craft Weekend-er??

Sarah Wolfe - You beat me on the kitchen cabinet hardware. We moved into the house and after making so many decisions, I just couldn’t make another one. So the cabinet doors are still bare… I have a feeling when we finally get that done, we will wonder why we didn’t do it sooner! šŸ˜‰

Sounds like you had a fabulous Mother’s Day… and I love the story about the man… I’m sure you made his day!

Heather - Meg – I’ve been reading your blog for quite a while now and I just want to say that I LOVE it!! I find all kinds of inspiration on it, whether it be spritiual, creative, fitness, junking or decorating. I find you so genuine and I just look forward to your posts. I’ve found that in the blog world, there seems to be this “need” to show only the perfectly styled pictures of our life, and while I appreciate a beautiful picture, I want to spend my precious time on things that I relate to. I usually end up feeling inadequate about my own life after reading some of the blogs out there. I never feel that way after reading your blog! I always feel inspired and like we could totally be friends. šŸ™‚ I love your style, your home is beautiful & I’m trying tof figure out a way to move into the craft house! I really appreciate when you post pics of your laundry piled on the couch or books strewn on tables & your kids crafting! I love that you are continually striving to do/be better but still share the reality of day to day hectic life. Basically, I love your genuine-ness and your heart for the Lord and it totally permeates your blog. I just wanted you to know that. Have a wonderful weekend! – Heather

Jenn - I followed your advice. I ordered the book. (I even convinced my girlfriends that we had to read it this month, as the inaugural book for our book club.)

Amazing book! Wow! Thank you for sharing it with us!

Kim B - Cant wait for a home tour, your design/decor is always so uplifting.

Seamingly Sarah - I love the peonies! I’m still waiting for mine over here in Northern New York. I loved your story of giving the flowers to the man. What a wonderful god ordained encounter. It is so good that you saw it for what it was, a moment to give, maybe plant a seed. =)

april R - Happy belated Mother’s Day šŸ™‚

I can just imagine that big tattooed guy years from now
thinking about the lady who gave him her attention, time, and flowers
