thoughts…..

i am convinced that the writers for Parenthood have hidden cameras in my home
and they are recording everything that goes on and they are making our life into a show.

it simply must be!

it is too real NOT to be the only answer.

i can’t even show you a clip because it’s too obvious what is so similar.

i promised cinnamon rolls over the weekend….it didn’t happen.

i finally decided to make them on sunday night.
craig ran to put gas in my car and i asked him to get the whole milk i needed.
he came home and sat in the kitchen with me while i was making them.
i poured in the first three ingredients.
then realized i had no flour.
HA.

9 cups is kind of a lot to ask your neighbor for….at 9 PM. Β πŸ™‚

so i FINALLY made them on wednesday.

mmmmmm.

they are PW’s recipe of course.

she makes me feel like i can make anything.
she makes me feel like wonder woman in my own kitchen!
i love her.
i wish she was my friend.
the end.

we have a day off of school today because of ice.
my husband said it’s totally fine out there on the roads….so that means that it’s all for nothing.
lame.

but i did get to sleep until 9:00….that rocks.
talby and i are cuddled up in our super soft robes.
and i made a FULL pot of coffee today and i am gearing up for….shall i say….a loooong day.

they are currently watching Meerkat Manor on Netflix.

Debbie - Hi Meg, I’m over here peaking around your blog. Hi, I’m Debbie. I’ve been here for years actually. No you don’t know me because I’m shy that way. Anyway, I decided to come back to this post and thank you.
Yes, thank you MEG for posting this back in January. Since I love your photos, blog and respect your recommendations…I ended up signing up for this class the very day you posted this and introduced me to blue lily. I’m so impressed with blue lily blog and find them to be such a burst of sunshine and laughter.
Thanks again, I’m so excited and finding it hard to contain my joy. I look forward meeting you too.
Blessings – Debbie

Heidi Jo the Artist - Just got Meerkat Manor for the kids yesterday, they love it! Thanks for writing what’s on your mind, fun to get new ideas for me/the kiddos. πŸ˜‰

Brooke - Love your new header! And my hubby and I watched this video together and it is so cute!! In fact, I might go watch it again! I love it!

alyssa - my heart goes pitter patter for parenthood. I LOVE that show. It is pretty much the only thing I watch anymore. so good.

Jennie - oh PW. her shredded pork might be the best thing i ever ate. i haven’t made the cinnamon rolls yet, but they are next on my list.

Colleen/And Baby Makes Five - Parenthood ROCKS!
And if you’d love a delicious cinnamon roll recipe with a little less work, here’s our favorite (made with the aid of the bread machine): http://andbabymakesfive-colleen.blogspot.com/2008/03/easter-morning-highlights.html
SO. DARN. GOOD.

Jen - I agree with the others, I wish you were my friend. πŸ™‚ Love your blog

stacie - i’m a quiet reader of you blog. you are my favorite though!! i don’t ever think i’ll be a professional photographer but i wanted to sign up for the blue lilly weekend just to meet you, and hang with you and learn with you and laugh with you. i love that you are so real. you write straight from your heart … i’m learning to travel from my head to my heart more often.
it’s four to one at my house today. oh my!

nicole i - ok. i don’t really know you but i sure do like you. wait that sounds stalker crazy like but it’s not. you say things i think but don’t say….and you like parenthood, madmen, kids, Jesus, africa and so on.

karen - I made your ‘lunch’ for dinner tonight. My husband and son loved it! Thanks!! I love your recipies!

Renae - I think you feel about PW the way I feel about you! I’ve not been reading for too long but you’re me, I can tell. I don’t know what that says for you unfortunately! πŸ˜‰ I love me some Parenthood, Pandora (I have a Jack Johnson station), and my 6 year old son and I just made PW’s cinnamon rolls a couple of weekends ago and I hear you. I seriously have been telling everyone I know that my rolls turned out so great…so proud of myself. Thanks for the daily laughs! Hugs, Renae

Emily - I am new to your blog, I have loved being part of your world. I have to say that this crazy post was really funny! I could tell by the end of the blog post you were more than one cup of coffee in…hehe. I hope you had a great day, and your kidos surprised you! BTW, love the red coffee cup! : )

Lisa Currie-Gurney - PARENTHOOD IS MY FAVORITE SHOW. IT IS SOOOOO REAL. I FEEL LIKE SOMEONE OUT THERE GETS IT. LIFE. REAL LIFE.
I AM SO EXCITED FOR YOU TO GO TO THE WORKSHOP. YOU WILL LEARN SO MUCH…
HUGS FROM MY HEART.

MGF - love lOVE LOVE THIS SONG. tHANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHaRING.
nOT SURE why i was in caps.
Also, parenthood rocks.

elma riedstra - Lov love LOVE the video!!! The little girl is sooo cute. We have no school tomorrow so it is be withthe seven:) have a wonderful day!!!

Kristin S - You want to be friends with PDub like we want to be friends with you.
Seriously, your random posts are my fave.

Leigh - Now I’m totally curious about your Parenthood similarities! I love that show.

Tonya - We LOVE Parenthood too! I love that the show can make you laugh like crazy and bawl your eyes out all in the same episode.

Tara - LOVE parenthood.
my husband and I laughed so hard last night that we nearly cried.

Maria - PW cinnamon rolls are the best! I never have whole milk, but always have skim and half and half. I just fill up the cup almost all the way with skim, then top it off with half and half.works in a pinch if you’re ever stuck. I cannot tell the difference.

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - Hi! I LOVE this video… especially when she kinda yawns at the endish (I think)… A.dor.able.
Hope your snow day was good. πŸ™‚

Margo - Mr. Duerksen was right – the roads were fine. I left town 45 minutes earlier than normal to make sure I had plenty of time to get to Wichita. I got there so early! Lucky for my department I was feeling kind and I stopped at Lamars for donuts and still got to work 30 minutes early! Hope you enjoyed your day at home with the kids!

Jessica J - I love PW and just made her cinnamon bread the other night! So YUM!
If my vacuum broke down it would be 24 hours before we were walking through animal hair ankle deep (we have 4 cats and 2 dogs!) so thank you Dyson for making an amazing animal hair vacuum.
I love your blog and have been a long time lurker — so, Hi! πŸ™‚

Jennifer - ahah! Wish I could feel more sorry for you but I am a teacher and LOVE snow days more than my students do. Now a snow day without my kids….??? that would be insane wonderful. I can’t remember the last time I was in my house alone for even an hour.
I absolutely adore Parenthood. Such a great snow.

andrea -

meg, please consider putting a link for joannes blog, she needs our prayers.

candace - Parenthood – I watched every episode of Season 2 last week on OnDemand. Then, I ordered the first season from Netflix – DVD 1 came today. I just told my husband I haven’t enjoyed t.v. this much in a very long time. Yay for maternity leave time to watch all of it!
If you need more dirt to suck up, you are free to follow that snow/ice and come vacuum my house to your heart’s content!

heather - Love Parenthood.. love cinnamon rolls…need a new vacuum…love that song. perhaps I should move in?
fav part of that video? “one day i’m gonna whistle?” too cute!

Carol S. - super cute video, can’t say I know the band but I definitely know and like the song. Good luck today…it’s almost over. I’m bummed, everyone is having snow days but Chicago!!

kristine - LOVE that video. for as many times as we’ve played that song at our house i’m surprised my daughter can’t sing it herself! we saw edward sharpe and the magnetic zeroes last summer. made me want to be a hippy real bad πŸ™‚
also LOVE those cinnamon rolls. wish i could come over and help you devour them. so craving a sweet now!

Laura Phelps - if you were my neighbor I would TOTALLY give you 9 cups of flour
Nick and I once asked our neighbor for two glasses of WINE
HAHAHAHA
I am laughing remembering this…
we had already had a bottle
but wanted a little more
and we were drunk enough to go and knock on our neighbors door!!!!
HAHAHAHAHA
they gave us a bottle πŸ™‚
I miss you

Alisa - i wish pioneer woman was my friend too…. see, that is the sad thing about blogs… you get so close to people that you’ve never met. i love your thoughts…always refreshing.

Lindsey@ Piecefully Home - love mumford and sons! pandora is the best.

melissa - every post. it’s like we were seperated at birth…only you inherited all the style.
my vacuum is currently broken. how does a family of 6 (mine) live without a vacuum??? i guess i need to head over to amazon myslef. i’m not a researcher either…except for on price. i want cheap but, it needs to work!

Amanda - I’m pretty sure I started watching Parenthood because of you – thank you! I love it! But now I’m gonna have a hard time watching it and not SEEING your family in it. HA!
And why on EARTH did they call a snow day today??! Well, I’m glad for my teacher friends, because I remember when I was a teacher and I longed for snow days and we never got them. But seriously, how dumb to call it TODAY and not last week! Go figure.
Hope you survived the day.

sara @ it's good to be queen - oh i hear you. we are having a snow day here too….sigh….

RLG - I think Parenthood is the BEST show on tv.
Why isn’t it nominated at the Emmys???
xoxo

angela - you know what i love most about blogland – that it is truly much smaller than it appears – after reading your blog as i ate my lunch today, i called my dad b/c he is a teacher at the high school there, and i just wanted to see if he was really off today (not that i didn’t believe you, but this can all seem a bit surreal) – a lo and behold, he was home! so – because i read your blog – i got to have a wonderful conversation with my dad (i’m in buffalo, ny now and continue to marvel at all the snow days i read about and we just have to keep plodding along because we have things like snow plows here)AND over the course of the conversation i found out that my dad is lauren’s geometry teacher! see – small world!! hope your day was tolerable and know that you brought a smile to another 2 faces today!!

Amanda - Those cinnamon rolls look awesome-maybe I’ll be brave enough to try her recipe now…
I’ve been looking for a new funky robe and I’m all about black w/ white polka dots!! Where did you find that? It’s so cute!!
Try to stay sane today…;)

Kelley - Then there will be two of us nervously laughing as we are surrounded by no one we know next month at this workshop.
I LOVE the closeness between that little girl and her dad while they’re singing and her arm is draped over his or the guitar. Too sweet.

stacie jameson - I’m sitting in ICU with my son Noah and this video put a smile on my face today Thanks its just what I needed.

Kimberly - Fear…yes it does get to us one way or another. I am stepping more boldly out of the shadows and just beginning to comment on your blog and others that I follow. I have been scared to do even that. Scared that nobody will visit my blog. Scared that I don’t have a good enough camera. Scared that it isn’t as full or fancy as other blogs. 2011 is going to be about believing that we all have something authentic to offer…including me! Thanks for always sharing the truth as you see it…it is so comforting and sooo inspiring.

Gemma - Love your little random posts : )

elisa - Did you see them on Ellen yesterday?? She was a-dorable!!

Kirsten P - I couldn’t quite catch all the lyrics on the song by Alexa and Jorge so I googled them. In case some of you didn’t either, here’s the link:
http://www.songlyrics.com/edward-sharpe-the-magnetic-zeros/home-lyrics/
Thanks for posting the video, Meg.

dawn - I pretty much have the same thing to say as Trish (a couple posts ^^^^ up there)… I love your blog, you really do make me smile. And yesterday I was soooo super duper grumpy — so this is a great way to start the day. Thank you. πŸ™‚

amy jupin - parenthood rocks me deeply. and i have to say, i think of you quite often when i see the teenage drama stuff. that is so HARD.
i love that song, home, by the way. everytime i hear it, i STOMP around like a little kid and it feels great! πŸ™‚
we were out of school for the ENTIRE week last week. and monday too for the holiday. i was going crazy. but i made it, i survived. you will too.

Trish - You make me smile. the end.

Heather R. - We are in Leavenworth…living the snowday dream, too. Love the video you shared. So sweet. Coffee mug, clink.

Janelle - Parenthood is just delightful. Didn’t you just love Craig T. Nelson when they were talking about who wears the pants in the family and then he said how that sounds awful or something like that? Just cracked me up.

Alli - Oh my word…I have the same vacuum as a famous person :-).

Amanda - Parenthood is soooo good! On so many levels. totally afraid to be the parent of teenagers one day.

tinycandi - I would definitely go if I could afford it! I hope you have a great time! I’m jealous! πŸ™‚

annie - i manage to get a little teary-eyed during every episode of Parenthood. Love it, and the music? Perfection!

heidi @ wonder woman wannabe - Oh how I heart PARENTHOOD – such a great show!
Wouldn’t it be great if ALL us bloggers could be real life friends even just for a day? πŸ™‚
Hope your day flies by without too much drama, mama!

Kori - O.M.Gosh. That video is just about the cutest thing I’ve seen!! I love when she comments about herself whistling one day….
Adorable.

Stacia - πŸ™‚
I love Parenthood too.
I was just thinking yesterday that I could maybe be okay with the kids growing up a little bit (and sleeping!) and having conversations with them.
Then I watched that episode (a day late) and I am back to “Please stop growing up!” I dread having a situation like Hattie’s w/ my daughter. Just dread it.
I too (like another commenter) wish it was longer every week.
I wish you were friends with PW in real life too. And then I would be friends with you (in a dream world) and you could introduce us. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚
And MommaH’s comment is awesome!

merlin - Could you do a review of the vacuum? Bag/bagless, effectiveness on dog hair both on the floor and on the furniture, and then the usual stuff, comfort and ease of use blah blah. I NEED something that WORKS, that is not going to bankrupt me with fancy bags, or exhaust me as I drag attachments and heavy equipment around.
OK, that would be much appreciated. Maybe you could persuade the Eureka company to offer up a give away….that is how sad my life is, I would LOVE to win a vacuum πŸ™‚

elisabeth (bovagoods) - LOVE parenthood. i have always wanted to make those cinnamon rolls. they look soooo good. lots of colorful rainbow goodness on my blog the past two days. totally thought of you as i wrote them. πŸ˜‰ can not wait to hear all about blue lily. so fun!

becky - i was thinking about you & your sweet family while i watched parenthood with my hubby on tuesday… because you’ve said before it’s very REAL. i loved when hattie said “i don’t get why you’re taking my door off – i didn’t do anything wrong” right after she LIED to her parents multiple times.
i looked at the hubbs {MY high school sweetheart} and said, ‘does she NOT realize why they don’t trust her?’
he replied ‘we did the EXACT same thing’.
too bad he’s right. ugh. i hate it when that happens.

Melanie - I love Parenthood. I am so thankful that I have a 16 yr. old BOY and not a girl:)

Candy - Your awesome! I feel like YOU have cameras hidden at my house! We have a snow day today as well, and I have made those cinnamon rolls and done the exact thing, but it was sugar for me, the sugar is pretty important. I too, wish you were my friend!

Heather - You must have a big fan base in Olathe! I came across your blog at The Lettered Cottage a few weeks ago, so I was tickled to see where you live (I grew up in Hutch). Anyway, the video is too cute!

Pamela - Love Mumford and Sons. Love Pandora. Love those cinn. rolls. Enjoy your ice day!

Dana @ Bungalow'56 - You have a gift… I feel as though I just sat down and had a chat with a good friend. As does every single person who will comment here today. You have what PW’s got. A je ne said quoi, I’m sure you two would be fast friends. The coolness in the room would be tangible.
I really like MommH too : )
Dana

lauren - You rock.
I wish you were my friend.

Kate - Sometimes Parenthood stresses me out. I get so tense about Hattie and Alex and Adam and the thought of my 6 and 2 year old girls! Eeek! Everytime it is over I say, “I wish it was a bit longer.” It is starting to make my husband insane. πŸ™‚

MommaH - Megan, I just have to tell you right here and now: YOU HAVE NOTHING TO BE NERVOUS ABOUT!!! Take it from a woman older than your mother (probably),who always felt out of place and self conscious everywhere, at your age – there is really nothing to be all uptight about. Nobody else has it together either.
I see you young Mothers at church who are 25 – 45 and older, and I think, “I don’t think I was ever that cool when I was that age.”
When I see YOU at church you always look so cute, as do your kids, and even if Annie and Sean are fighting over a chair, and you are exasperated, you are fine. NORMAL.
I see what you create on your blog – with your house, your fabrics and your camera and I am awestruck. You are incredibly talented, and you don’t need to be afraid or back up from anyone!
There. That is my mommy sermon for the day.
You are loved, dear Meg. By people you don’t even know for sure. Be blessed!

Alicia - Hi Meg! Parenthood is also one of my favorites. I am often surprised how many times I get teary-eyed while watching…signs of a great show!
My 12 yr. old is not quite there but I see signs of future sassiness! I hope your day goes smooth and school is back to normal tomorrow…we moms need all the days we can get!

Penny - Love Parenthood. Glad I am not the only one who cries during the show. And I did cry during Alex and Adam’s conversation. It is very real.

shannon - I love pandora too but we hardly listen to it anymore since we have sirius. We are home today because of snow though and probably tomorrow b/c it will probably freeze tonight…not good. I am supposed to go to a concert tomorrow and my momma is flying in from arizona on saturday….not cool. (no pun intended). Anywho…got any craft ideas for our long day at home too for children 4 and under? πŸ˜€

Deb Meyers - hey…that is an adorable little girl! On Youtube there is a link to an Alexa T=shirt @ http://www.gonnawhistle.com, apparently to help a college fund.

Teresa - I am not married, nor do I have children but I cry at some point during every single episode of Parenthood. Every single one. This past week it was during Alex and Adam’s conversation. Love that show!

Heather - I am a regular reader, never really a commenter, but I had to say that your last line about the 5 against 1 not being a fair fight was so cute, clever, and hilarious. I so enjoy your attitude and blog.

Casey - I have never seen parenthood but have heard such good things about it. I guess I need to start watching it!
I promised my kids cinnamon rolls too but STILL haven’t made them. I have to clean the kitchen first. Boo.
How adorable and sweet is that video! I loved it!

Toni - I LOVE parenthood!! That show is so realistic. Seriously, Tuesday night is my favorite night of the week!

Amber - You will be amazing at the photo conference. I’m so happy for you

Jodi - Pandora Rocks… enough said… not sure if this guy is on Pandora yet or not, but you must google Jadon Lavick. simply.amazing.
Enjoy your day!! :o)

Karen - Hey Meg~
We are snowed in in Olathe today too; 6 inches and I need to clear a path from the garage to the street to get the trash out.
I laughed out loud at your Parenthood comment! I am with you there on that one. My 18 year old daughter and I watch it together and for the last episode I just kept looking at her and asking “is that what daddy and I sound like”? What about Modern Family; do you watch it? Last nights eposide was hilarious! Thankfully that “situation” hasn’t happened to us, but just the thought of it gives me hives!!!
Enjoy the coffee and your kiddos today!

Traci - i love parenthood.

Alisa - I’m not liking the news that your kids are off due to ice today. My 17year old is traveling from KC to Wichita today on a big tour bus for a thespian conference….eeek! I hate bad weather, especially when someone else is in charge of the driving.
Iβ™₯Parenthood too. It does seem a bit too real sometimes when I’m watching it.
I love that video too, watched it this morning on Miz Booshay’s blog and it just made me smile.
Blessings for a happy day~
Alisa

Michelle - GOOD luck with all of the kids today!

answers.

first thing…..

apparently the awesome quote came from the show How I Met Your Mother.
i have only seen that show twice so i googled it.
here it is.

i want to say that i know OF COURSE it's not easy to just overcome being sad.
and i wasn't sad.
just feeling BLAH.

it's january.
that is what i do.

but i do really like the idea of BEING AWESOME.
πŸ™‚
i mean just say it out loud  "today i will be awesome"
you will feel it.
it's helpful.
i dare you to try it.

OK.
great questions girls…i love to answer questions.

question one:
what is your favorite NON-disney movie?

i have a bunch.
i will share by category:

suspense – Signs
                The Fugitive

drama –  i can't think of any!!! i am blank.

chick flick – Julie & Julia.

i love so much about this movie.
i love the blogging.
i love the acting….meryl streep is just….amazing.
what i love the most….the love between paul and julia.  it's beautiful.
"it was julia.  it was julia all along"
makes me tear up.

i also love...You've Got Mail
                  Sleepless in Seattle

romance –  The Holiday
                 The Family Man
anything where i get to look at Mr. Clooney

comedy –  Parenthood is a CLASSIC.
The Money Pit also a CLASSIC.
and to me….anything with Vince Vaughn or Will Ferrell…

action – Bourne Identity…Bourne Supremecy….Bourne Ultimatum
Mr and Mrs. smith….they are both just so easy on the EYES!!!

question two:
what's going on in the dining room?!!

well whenever i take pictures i don't like them much….so i have been waiting.
but i am just going to show you.
the light is funky until like 20 minutes before sunset and then i'm making dinner.
so these are from this morning.
IMG_6630

IMG_6634

IMG_4657
print is from the wheat field….matte is micheal miller fabric.

IMG_6635

IMG_4659
print from studio mela….matte is an old map.

all my frames are from the thrift shop or antique store….i have been collecting for years.
the yellow lamps were silver from a garage sale 10 years ago.

IMG_5757
now the red box is across the room and i asked sean to display his lego space shuttle in that space.  :)
it's perfect size and pretty safe from being knocked over and it's in view instead of in a box.

IMG_6659
pool table….from a friend's garage.  foos ball table…from a friend.  and now a ping pong (dining room) table for $10.

dining room twice a year….game room the other 363 days.

IMG_6619

IMG_6679
that caricature is of lauren when she was little made at Six Flags.  i found it again…i love it.
also her octopus art made in first grade.

the chandelier is from the kane county flea market in may of 2010.
IMG_6648

IMG_6653
bird canvas is from Pier One….in a antique store frame.
craig's chairs are from craigslist.
now his friends can sit down inbetween turns playing pool.  :)

IMG_6669

IMG_6650
my sister painted this for me for my birthday.
SIGH.
i told you i love cow paintings…..and this…..i LOVE.
also in an identical frame from the antique store.

the paint color on the walls is antique white.
the trim is done in Kilz primer first then Ultra Bright Behr semi-gloss paint.

question three:

does your hairstyle have a name for me to tell my stylist?

i am pretty sure it's called a wedge haircut….amy please speak up if i am wrong.
Images-1 Images-3 Images-2

question four:
where in the world would you like to visit?

i think anywhere tropical is where i would want to spend time with craig…all alone for a long time.
this was in google images….don't you just feel GOOD when you look at it?
i can practically smell the ocean.
mr. duerksen…..are you looking?  can you feel it???
Beautiful_tropical_beach-14711

but i also really want to see more of Africa.
all over Africa.
i want to see it…experience it….meet people….open my eyes…help where i can….love who i can….
ALL OF IT.

i want to have africa in my heart forever.

question five:
when did you decide to start charging for photography?
when people started asking me to take their family pictures.
they encouraged me and built up my confidence with compliments and telling their friends about me.
i charged a small amount at first so i could get experience and decide if i even enjoyed it as work.
when i realized i did then i just went for it.
it was scary.  and vulnerable.
but worth it.

question six:
what do you do all day with the kids in school?
enjoy a quiet house.
i spend a lot of time on the computer….blogging, answering email and reading blogs.
i do laundry, i pick up the house (a little), i go to the grocery store (UGH…this is so old to me….i am over it).
i workout a few times a week.
i edit photos from may – november and then hopefully sew from january – april for my etsy shop.
i read my bible study stuff or a book to help me cope for that given day
(Crazy Love….Praying the Sriptures for your Children…Love and Logic…5 Love Languages….)
i make dinner.
if i am tired i take a nap.
this next few weeks i will be purging all the closets and rooms of all the JUNK.
bags and bags i am sure.
i am not a schedule kind of girl.
i am the opposite.
so i just do what i need to for that day…and what i feel like doing….schedules make me crazy.
and i like to go to lunch if my friend asks or run to target in wichita on a whim.

question seven:
where do you find inspriation?
blogs.
blogs are so cool.
anything you could want….it's there!

occasionally i go to B&N and get a BIG pile of books and magazines i want to look at…a coffee…and i sit.

but knowing i will sound like an old lady….
it's usually too loud in there.
the music is ok but someone is ALWAYS blabbing away on their cell phone.
i cannot stand that.
and with my ADD brain i can't focus on anything but that person on the phone…driving me crazy.
i bring my iPod now and try my very best to tune them out.

question eight:
how do you take indoor pictures with out a flash?

i usually shoot in P because years ago Karen Russell said that is what she shoots in (or did at the time).
and i change my ISO to a higher number because you need more light in when you're inside.
i also change my White Balance to whichever setting we are using….Sun symbol if it's lit well from the windows…
or AWB it's just overheard lighting.
i honestly do not like my inside photos…but if you do….that is how i get them.
i feel i need to learn a LOT about my camera still….every day.
indoor pictures are hard for everyone….i think.

our house has lots of big windows so in the day we have good light but i think you were asking about at night?

IMG_6309
this is at night.
all the lights are on…chandliers and recessed lighting…brightly lit…my ISO was probably 1600…on AWB.
did i answer your question?

question nine:
what do you use to edit your pictures?

every photo that has been on this blog has been edited in iPhoto or Picnik.
i did buy Photoshop but STILL haven't loaded it.
who has time for this?!!
i need to do it but i just feel overwhelmed and don't want to fail.
soon.
soon.
soon.

question ten:

what kind of make-up do you use?
in june 2010 my friend Kimberlee took me for a MAC-over.
Mac-logo-white-on-black

it was fabulous.
i was hooked.
i love using grown up make-up….i feel pretty (oh so pretty…i feel pretty and witty and…ok i will stop now).
i want to do a whole post about it sometime….with video.  :)
would you like that?
but my mascara that was asked about specifically….Maybeline Great Lash.
cheapy in the green and pink package.
love it.
use it everyday.
*************************************************************************************************

ok…more questions to be answered tomorrow.
THANKS for asking.
now i will return to my cleaning binge.

Cliff Spears - Watching “How I Met Your Mother” makes me laugh a lot, due to their approach on making people laugh, especially whenever Barney’s there to entertain. Even his words of wisdom apply in the real world, just like taking negativity away, and being awesome instead. I dunno if this is just me, but every time I suit up and pick between purple ties or my red tie, I always remember him doing his pose, like it was etched in my brain.

Michelle - I have a question and a suggestion:
Question- What was it like for you being a young mom? I had my first child when I was 20 and my biggest challenge was probably connecting to the other moms of kids in his class because they were all at least 15 years older than me. He’s almost 16 and sometimes I still feel a little out of the loop with his friends’ parents. I’ve found everything to be easier this time around (my second child is 6).
Suggestion- You are already obviously a talented photographer, but to take it to the next level, I would really look into the workshops over at clickinmoms.com . I was able to start shooting solely in manual mode (and trust me, that was a miracle!) and they also have Photoshop classes. Their classes run for a month and they have weekly assignments and tons of feedback from the instructor. They’re not cheap, but worth every penny. I’m not affiliated with them at all, but I just could not believe how much I learned from their “Rock Your Camera” class.
Love your blog! We made your snowman ornaments over Christmas vacation and I will treasure those messy little handprints forever.

A - CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME Where your family picture canvas is from, the one on your mantle?
Thanks!

Emily - This is a little off subject but I know Africa has a place in your heart. http://kissesfromkatie.blogspot.com/ it is a blog of a woman who is in her early 20 who moved to africa a adopted 14 girls who were abandoned and uncared for. Her jurney speaks of Gods will and it a true testiment to what he can do in times of need. Whenever I need hope I turn to her blog.

dotsie (aka podso) - You know, there is a saying that says something like this, “Once you have drunk from the rivers of Africa you must return to drink again.”

jennibell - My MIL had the pool table in her dining room for YEARS and hated it. . .but we all loved not having to go into the basement to play pool and “be away” from everyone else. It’s since been moved back down and it’s too bad. . .I know the kids don’t play nearly as much now.
I’m always inspired by your house and style. And honesty. I would have a hard time listing the things you do each day when the kids are at school and not feeling guilty about it. I always feel I should be “doing” something — although, yes, I know laundry and grocery shopping and making dinner are important – ha! Maybe I’ll just keep coming to you for counseling πŸ™‚
We don’t have television service and rely on videos for our entertainment — How I Met Your Mother is one of the few series we DO watch — you should take Mel up on her offer to borrow them. . .and thanks, too, for all the movie suggestions from you and other readers — I’m making a list!!! We watched Shrek Ever After yesterday and I was surprised how much I liked it — great family message!!

Mary - Thanks for the insight into your “hectic” and “adventurous” life!

Tara M. - My living room USED to have a pool table, life sized Chewbacha cutout, and a huge American flag on the wall. I like your dining room so much more! I loved Julie and Julia. I need to watch it again!

emily - You are fun. Thanks for being honest and just yourself. You are delightful.

asibtroy - reset my camera and am trying out with the ISO and AWB! THX!
My husband challenged me to do the picture a day thing on my blog this year and I find I’m taking most of the photos in the dark…

Meredith - I’d love to see a list of what blogs you read regularly too! Love this post πŸ™‚

Kari - Fun post! ‘How I Met Your Mother’ is one of my very favorite shows. I love your Dining/Game Room, especially the vintage maps. Very cool thanks for sharing!

Holly - The haircut is called an inverted bob….atleast that’s what my stylist (and bff) calls it. I had that cut for years! I’m growing it out now!

Crystal Paine - Have you ever posted a list of all the blogs you read? I know on some blogs it will show who they are following, but I haven’t been able to find that on yours, maybe because it’s in typepad? Anyway, I’d love to see what blogs you read cause I’m sure I’d love them! This was a great post, would love to see the MAC video, I wear MAC too, my friend & I had the Mac-over done in November, although I’d already been wearing it for a few years, but it was fun! I love your house, and the pictures that you post. You take great pictures & I’d love to see photography tips. I made the snowman handprint ornaments with my kids, those were fun & turned out super cute! My daughter got a purse for Christmas from her grandparents, it says Whatever on it & has little rainbows & other lil’ pics. I thought of you when I saw it! I’ll try to send you a pic of it someday! Do you watch Big Bang Theory? My husband & I love it, it’s my favorite “funny” show!

DaisyDuke - Question 3, Inverted Bob or Pob (Posh Bob)

DevremΓΌlk - Nice post. I love it. Waiting your new posts. Thank you…

Julie - Awesome post Meg! πŸ™‚
Speaking of awesome, have you seen this this TED talk? I think you’d like it. http://www.ted.com/talks/neil_pasricha_the_3_a_s_of_awesome.html
The dining room looks GREAT!

Dana@Bungalow'56 - Hey Megan,
I too only use my iPhoto and Picnik, and while that works fine, sometimes I want to be able to do so much more. Just thought I would let you know there is a free mini e-course for photoshop. I haven’t even bought photoshop yet and will just download the free trial for the course, to see if it’s worth it for me. It starts tomorrow and lasts until the 21st~ I think. I found out about it on a blog where the edits are just beautiful. I asked the blogger how she had learned to use photoshop and she sent me to KimKlassenCafe. I’m really excited to see what she has to offer, and since it’s free I figure I have nothing to lose.
Dana

Jenna - I don’t know if your question about the makeup was rhetorical or not, but yes, I would love it!

Jaimie - i love when you do these : )

Laura - Wow.. it’s crazy how much we have in common!!! But the thing that stood out the most was the “add brain” inside of bookstores. I am very much the same and can not concentrate with all of the people milling about.
And the Bourne movies…. my family has seen each of them at LEAST 10 times. I want to see a face off between Jason Bourne and Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie’s character in the movie “Salt”)
I adore your house even more now that I know you have your dining/living space as a game room. Awesome.

Gemma - I really enjoy these posts!! Loving the dinning room : )
Gemma x

Jen@thecottagenest - Meg, I absolutely *LOVE* what you have done with your dining room. I love not using a room as it is intended but instead using it in a way that works for your family. Bold and inspiring. That’s what you are.

elisa - Holy crap I love that cow painting!!! Will she sell me one??

mandy falgout - wow, love this post. thanks for being you and being real. i just got a friend to try mac makeup and she loves it. i have heaps of it, but don’t wear anything at the moment since moving to phnom penh, cambodia. i sweat so much here it seems like a waste, so i go au natural all the time. kind of liberating. weird. i seriously think we could be twins from different mommas. you and i have many similar tastes, likes and loves of things.
keep rockin’ it!

Steffie - Would love to know where you got the map art above the buffet and the collection of globes? I’m sure you’ll saying something fun like thrift stores or a flea market…. I wish our little island had the same offerings as the mainland, sigh! Have a great weekend Meg!

Miss Tiff - Hi Meg. I’m new here. I read two posts in the past month that linked here and now I’m stuck on u too.
A few things, you are not afraid to use to color. I’m a wimp. 90% of my closet is solids, but I’m turning it up a notch, yo. The spare room is my inspiration.
Fav Movie. I like a few of your choices, but you have to promise to try and watch WAITRESS. It is my new favorite. It’s definitely a chic flic but u will laugh and maybe cry a tear too. My new fav, I watch it whenever I feel blue.
Last thing, Your blog is an awesome read, it has a tone of wit, reality and luv. Best Reality blog award goes to you. Happy New Year!!

angela - Sitting here this Saturday morning in front of my gas logs reminds me of a cold Saturday a year ago when I found your blog. I never took my pj’s off that day. i read EVERY SINGLE entry of yours….and was hooked! I love that Lauren is a normal teenager with trials and an attitude! I love the name Talby. I love that you have a craft day for your kids. I adore your craft room and your big, old house. I love that you went down the slip and slide and even showed us! I love the rainbow cake and the shots of your mudroom and that you show us mountains of laundry. Yours remains one of my favorite *real* blogs! Thanks for sharing! Happy 2011. This is going to be a great year! God bless you and your family!

LouBoo - Hello…I haven’t stopped by for a while (do you ever get that where you end up following so many blogs that it becomes impossible to look at all of them and then I have guilt about unfollowing people to make life simpler – that is sooo not what blogging is all about!). Anyway – reading this reminded me why I like your blog. Utter honesty! And your movie pics – like me you sound like a girl who has a soft spot for the 80s but doesn’t mind when it’s up to date either! Lots of my faves are on your list. Plus I like the description of your day at home. I do the same…and taking a nap – I do that too although I probably would not admit it to everyone! But honestly – what better thing is there than taking a nap in the daytime? That so reminds me of pre-children life. Anyway – I am glad I popped by and had this ‘chat’!! Lou xx

meghan - the globes and canvas are my favs. love your blog. always will. tgif!

Kendra - You could totally have Africa in your heart forever if you adopted….just sayin πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Megan - I used to use Picnik also and when I finally got around to using PS it went SO MUCH faster when editing pics. You will wish you would have done way sooner! BTW Kimberlee and friends introduced me to MAC as well…I’ll come video for you guys! πŸ™‚

sara@augustfields - you’re a doll. love your candidness….so refreshing πŸ™‚ cute setup on the dresser!

Kristin S - I think these posts are some of my favorite. When I saw you ask for any questions I was exhausted reading through all the questions. Well done responding/answering.
Very, very fun.
I wonder why we are so intrigued by everyone’s normal lives. It is refreshing to know that we all do laundry. Grocery shop. Normal stuff.
Thanks for sharing!

Rachel / cREaTe - i love it when you do this smorgasbord of question answering. πŸ™‚ so fun & i get new ideas … and reminded of things like that i need to rent julie & julia! forgot that was on my “list”. love your theory on why you have a game room instead of just a dining room. that’s our theory on why we’ve never really had a guest room … and instead do an office or craft studio – with a lil’ futon over on the side [sorry guests]. πŸ™‚

shannon - I LOVE this post! LOVE LOVE LOVE! I also LOVE the collection of cameras….where did they all come from? Yes MAC video would be awesome!

Kimberlee J. - The video MAC over is so on.

Sharry Sullivan - What a wonderful blogpost! Thank you…

Elizabeth - What program/how did you nake your 35 before 35 list?

Karla - I too have to ask – Kane County, IL?!?!? The county in which I live? And I missed your coming?? Drat.

elma riedstra - Oh I love your dinning room:) Oh I would love your sister to paint me a cow:) Love this post!!

hannah - Please do a makeup video πŸ˜€ You’re totally awesome!
And I LOVE your house! Seriously, I want it. Have you seen a tumblr blog called this pretty space? Lots of awesome pictures in your kind of style πŸ˜€

Amber - I have really enjoyed reading your blog for a while now and agree with you that blog surfing is fantastic! : ) My husband thinks I am crazy for looking in on people I dont even know, but the blogs I follow, I follow for a reason. I feel that if I actually met any of these people, we would be great friends! Also, just want to say I love the Julia and Julia movie too! Have you listened to My Life In France? It’s a memoir of Julia Childs’ life. Great Book! God Bless you, and keep typing hon, as you are a virtual friend and I love hearing about what you do!

se7en - Ooooh So much to love here… love the window into your life… Come over and visit Cape Town – it’s in Africa after all and we would love to meet you all!!!

Tiffany - Oh.My.Word – that dining room is AWESOME!!! Love it!
I am still reading the archives and perhaps you have covered it – but I would like to know if you are planning on doing a little photography workshop. You take great pics – and I always love to learn new tips and tricks from others.
BTW…in my mind I always hear “whatever” in that “80’s valley girl” style… Do you do that? πŸ˜€

Jenny B. - Fun! I had to chuckle when I read this: “craig’s chairs are from craigslist.” Hee-hee. πŸ™‚
Oh, and if you love cow paintings, you should check out the new shop a couple of my friends just opened: Red Hill Gallery in Fayetteville, AR. If you live in/near Wichita, it would only be about a 4-hr. drive (I think). Weekend getaway? Anywho… here is their new blog:
http://www.redhillgallery.blogspot.com/
And their individual etsy shops:
Shannon’s: http://www.etsy.com/shop/donkeysandturkeys
and Cari’s: http://www.carihumphry.com/
I love all your photos. I think my favorite thing about your house is that it looks fresh and modern (well, because vintage is the new modern? maybe? yes?). Anyway, it’s “in style,” yet colorful (not all white and neutrals). πŸ™‚

happygirl - Loved this post. LOVED IT! I’m new to blogging and so happy if I have 1/2 an hour to blog. I don’t take pictures, but I’d love to learn. Love the movie Julie and Julia too. LOVE IT! I can watch the movie Mother with Debbie Reynolds and Albert Brooks over and over (my husband HATES it) And, I think I’d love the beach more if I didn’t look so horrible in a bathing suit.

Katie Adams - I love you. Your blog is so fun to read. Check out my recent cow purchase on my blog. I love her, too. Have you named your cow? I think they need names.

Cari - Fun post! I’m sitting in my living room and it opens up to my kitchen and dining room. And compared to what I just saw of your dining room… it is so BLAH!!! Note to self… never let my girls see your house. They’ll totally give you cool mom of the year award. πŸ˜‰ Oh, and the links for the wheat field and studio mela both route back to studio mela. Just thought you’d like to know! Have a great, blah-free weekend! πŸ™‚

heidi @ wonder woman wannabe - i think that cut is also called an angled bob – i’ve sported one on and off since college and am back with it now-a-days, only with a new color:
take a peek, if you like…
http://www.wonderwomanwannabe.com/2011/01/lately.html
your dining room looks great to me!!
and, I’d join you for a movie night anytime – i can’t claim a favorite either – but love all the ones you listed. have you seen ‘the curious case of benjamin button’? that’s one of my favorite dramas.

Julie - I love “Julie & Julia” as well. I love Julia Child. So much so, I threw a dinner party in her honor.
http://areasontogettogether.blogspot.com/2010/10/mastering-art-of-french-cooking-dinner.html

Nancy from the Chicago 'burbs - Kane County Flea Market? The one in Illinois, 20 minutes from my door? If so, I LOVE that place. I love spending the morning there with my girlfriends. So many great treasures.

Becky @ Farmgirl Paints - Love most all of your movies. The firm is a good drama. Salt and Bourne for action. The Holiday, 50 first dates, You’ve Got Mail for romance. I use MAC too and believe it or not Maybeline Great Lash for mascara. It’s creepy how much we have in common. Cute cow;)

Georgia - Thanks for the indoor w/out flash lighting tip!! i didnt think to do that with my Canon. Im practising now indoors! :o)
I would love to see more videos of your family and you doing general ‘Meg’ stuff.
I Love the way you have put together the dining room, its fab.
Also… one place in Africa i would 100% recommend is Egypt, its totally amazing, seriously i was so over whelmed at the amazing places there i wanted to cry. My boyfriend thought i was crazy… we did a cruise down the Nile and i stayed in the cabin and just watched people from the window, swimming, playing and washing in it… it was a moving experience πŸ™‚
xxx

Amanda-ThriceBlessed - I love the posts when you show your house the best! Your dining room looks great! Love all the white, globes, and family photos. Very much my style too!

Beth - love these type post…heck i enjoy all your post
hey i would love to get some tips on makeup and what to do
live in small town with no makeup artist around to share the true aspects of makeup do’s and don’t

crystal beutler - Love all your answers !! We are so kindred spirits. If you come to So. Cal this year, you have to call me!!!!!!!! You do.
Glad to see you got your cow picture. If you haven’t learned photo shop yet I am so impressed that you get such great photographs!!! I rely heavily on photo shop. Go to Lynda.com if you want to learn how to use it. I’ve loved that site. And I’ve loved using the Actions created by the Pioneer Woman. You will understand more about actions when you take the Photo shop tutorials πŸ™‚
I love your house. It’s just way too cool. I need to come shopping in your neck of the woods, and you need to come shopping in mine. We have some junk/antique stores here.
P.S. Let me know when you want to do a giveaway. πŸ™‚

pam - We just discovered How I Met Your Mother….my husband still can’t believe that I love it. We need to start over from the beginning. I’m with you on a tropical location…blue water….someday.

Toni :O) - You are beautiful inside and out…thanks for sharing all the tidbits…your blog is definitely one of my FAVORITES!!! So, here’s my question…what do you love MOST about your hubby? Have a fabulous weekend!!!

Heather - Howdy! Just wanted to pass along a great resource for learning photoshop — because you’re right, who has time?! πŸ™‚ Lynda.com has great video tutorials and in a matter of a few hours, you’ll feel like a pro. You pay a monthly fee but could learn all you really want to in a weekend or two.
love your blog. A regular stop each morning with my coffee:)

Dayna - The haircuts that you featured on this post are usually called an inverted bob. A wedge shares a lot of the same characteristics but if you’re specifically looking for the stacked back and longer sides, you’ll want to ask your stylist for an inverted bob and then have a very specific conversation about lengths and the grade of that stacking because it varies pretty wildly.

sarah - thank you for letting us pick your brain! and YES to the mac video! i loved the video of craft day with the kids…it felt like an insider’s scoop. :]

Kristen @ JLS - How fun to read this post!! Do you ever watch the television show Parenthood, on NBC Tues. It’s great, I recommend tuning in for sure!

shauna reed - you are so generous with yourself meg.
i love the way you displayed your family photo shoot!
i have been trying to figure out how to use a bunch of the ones we had done, this is INSPIRING!
you are awesome!

mel - This was SO fun to read! I love learning about you, we would have fun if we ever met πŸ™‚
How I met your Mother is one of our favorite shows! We own all the seasons on DVD…you can borrow them if you want. Let me know & I can mail them to you πŸ™‚
Have a great weekend, Meg!

Shana - “How I Met Your Mother” just took my top spot for funny TV – beating out The Office & Will and Grace.
I love every character – except Robin, I find her boring.
Barnie is the best – and I’m not talkin’ bout no dinosaur.

Laura - My mom sent me this when I needed a pick me up! I am a mom of 3 little ones all under the age of 3 so I watch this ALOT! Hope you enjoy it! πŸ™‚
I’d like you to meet your new life coach:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR3rK0kZFkg

Sonia - If you haven’t already, you should watch Date Night!! We are going to watch Dinner For Schmucks tonight! I love Steve Carell!!
Do all the cameras on your shelf work?

Trina McNeilly - Fun post. I love the cow painting you’re sister did…..soo cool. I love the Kane County Flea Market. I was just thinking of how I ned to go soon!
x Trina

sara @ it's good to be queen - wow that was awesome, love these kind of posts. πŸ™‚ and yes, do a mac video.

sandy toe - Great movies…have you seen “while You were Sleeping”…love that movie!
sandy toe

virginia - i love that cow painting!

Ali - Wait! I didn’t get my question in!
I love the name Talby and I wanted to know how you came up with it considering your four other children all have traditional names. (have you answered this question already?)

$6 well spent

dave bought two tarps at costco and a bottle of tear-free baby shampoo.

he and craig taped the tarps together, turned on the hose and we had an instant homemade

SUPER SIZED slip n' slide!

IMG_9048
everyone used the shampoo on their fronts to be more slippery….IT WAS AWESOME!

IMG_9062
it came more natural to some of the kids.
and frustrating to others.

IMG_9067
IMG_9148
we finally had to bribe them….one dollar for any kid who can make it to the end.

IMG_9016
IMG_9083
IMG_9531
it was really far.
but suddenly everyone was out on the hill and had won their dollar.

IMG_9541
IMG_9517
we called lauren outside.
i told her if she would do it…..then i would do it.
she said "if you do and i do….then jenny has to do it too"
and she added "NO PICTURES"
deal.

IMG_9139
no pictures of lauren….i was fine with it.
and jenny is always fun.

IMG_9140
dave took some video.
i adore it.
he is shouting "DOLLAR!!!" and everyone is so happy.

that night i uploaded my pictures from the day onto the laptop.
i started clicking through them and others joined me in looking through.
then we got to craig's pics of ME going for me first time.
everyone is looking and i started clicking faster trying to move them OFF of ME.

and i am not kidding….there were 38 pictures in a row.
he caught every split second of it.
i had it on action setting and he just held down the button.

i was screaming with hysterical laughter as i kept clicking and clicking trying to get to a cute kid
instead of ME in my MOM suit….RUNNING.
i kept yelling "NO! OH NO!!!"
we were watching a slow motion movie with way too much detail on full screen….yikes.

it was very very funny.

so last night i highlighted them all to delete them….and then i thought….
it WOULD be funny to make a movie of them.
i am over the embarrassment of it and just think it's funny now.

and now….without furthur ado….
6 seconds of embarrassment.

i was sore the next day.
it's not really meant for grown ups….but it really was fun.

shelly@familyblt - I love everything about this post. Such a good idea for fun!

Melanie - Meg, you are so much fun! We just love you for it.

Amy Bogan Griffin - You are soooo AWESOME!!! Thanks for showing us!!!!

Quinn - I love, love, LOVE when bloggers post videos… it’s like seeing their photos come to life. Almost surreal, almost as if you guys are suddenly more real then I always thought you were. Anyways, looks like tons of fun. I think I might put this on my list to do this summer.. hm.
Hope you guys are doing well. πŸ™‚

Lia - that is the COOLEST thing ever. i wanna do it!!!

Alisha Mancinas - YOU. ARE. AMAZING! I wanted to email you the other day, to show you some rainbow soap I came across on etsy or something, but my mac wouldn’t let me because I use gmail, and when I click on the e-mail me link on your blog, my comp wanted to use it’s email program. It was frustrating. πŸ™‚

julia - these are mom suits???? I have three very similar to yours. why didn’t anyone tell me???

Chicago jen - Great post! Not enough pictures of Dave though. Lol about the pic of you!

heidi @ wonder woman wannabe - Oh-so-awesome! I love that everyone participated – your still shot video is such a hoot with the added soundtrack! What a good sport you are!

Garner6389 - The baby shampoo is a great idea.We have something in common. We get Migraines. Not sure if thats good or not!!!!!

Vera - Love it! I’m so crabby in the middle of the night – with a headache and all the kids somehow piled in MY bed – but your post made me laugh. Thanks!

Carey - You’re such a champ, Meg. I love your candor and authenticity. I love that you write about being crabby one day and then bounce back with this happy snapshot of your vacation on the next. I have four children that are 5 and under, so I’m well acquainted with “so crabby,” but I know your joy of being of mama, too. So glad to “know” you and your family through your blog.

Liz@HoosierHomemade - I loved seeing the pics. We made a slip n’ slide last year, and the boys loved it. We bought one this year because youngest son was having some friends over for his bday, it lasted 1 day…geez!
Looks like a great family time was had by all!
~Liz

Genn - THAT looks like some serious FUN!!I will have to remember this grand $6 idea.

I love your gusto!
Great Stuff!

Kimberlee J. - My first thoughts were…will she? Will she show the pictures of her going down the slippy slide? No she won’t. SHE WHAT? She posts a photo collage video? You rocked that so hard. Awesome.

Jessie - That was awesome Meg! Loved that you did it too!!

Rachel / cREaTe - love your lil’ video. πŸ™‚ love that the camera was on that setting & you had that many photos! HILARE! and the kids! i’m dying laughing at the thought of all that. πŸ™‚

Sandy - Great fun! That looks like a wonderful time…must tell my sister about it for her kids and the hill in her backyard!
Not to sound stalkerish but, if I were you, I’d totally have that picture of Craig in a frame next to my bed. You’ve got a looker there, girl! πŸ™‚

tara pollard pakosta - so fuN!
and your kids will LOVE that video of you one day!
showing you were there and present and a FUN MOM!
tara

Jaime @ Mamarazzi - Meg… what a great post and a wonderful idea for the slip and slide. If only we had “hills” here! lol…
I guess with enough water, baby shampoo and plastic, one could fly eve if horizontal! πŸ˜€ Might need to try that!
Love the video! πŸ˜€ Too cute!!

Juli - more = my. Sorry, I’m tired, been teaching VBS all morning!

Lori - What an awesome idea! And your video is too because you are such a good sport to share it. So funny, you know how to make me laugh out loud at my computer almost every day!

Juli - Slip ‘n Slides were way more fun before we had boobs, weren’t they? My best friend & I “bought one for our kids” (that’s more story, stickin’ to it) when they were toddlers. We were SO sore the next day! I’m sure it didn’t help that we were still nursing!

traci in virginia - How fun was that!!!? Thanks for sharing! You are a great Mom and make me smile!!! I am a widow with two kids and I try to make sure my kids are having fun! Your blog is so helpul for that! Thanks so much for all you share!

angela - I loved this! Love the homemade slide. Love that Lauren said no pics….so typical. That’s what I like. You all are so typical. Love your family! Can you do that? Can you love a family you don’t know?

marie tere - I think looking at the videos makes that crabby face smile. And I am so quick to delete pictures of me. But then think, that’s who I am and that’s who my kids will remember in years to come. Love the idea, must look for hill πŸ™‚

Staci - LOVE it!!!!!!!!!

I love that shot of Jenny, pure happiness.

Heather R. - L to the O to the V to the E…the super size slip and slide. AWESOME!!! You in the Batman pose on it. AWESOMER!!!
That is great. ~Heather R.

Tricia - Okay. SO much to say. The slip ‘n slide is awesome! My kids (and the neighbor kids) just watched your video and now they are outside plotting where we should put OUR giant slip ‘n slide. πŸ˜‰
Secondly, you rock my socks! I’m so glad that you had a fantastic vaca. I’m also very glad that you shared the highlights with us.

Keri ~ Forever Folding Laundry - SO fun!!! Those are the types of slip-n-slides my dad made us as kids, but we never took it to the shampoo level of awesomeness. πŸ™‚ Money SO well spent!!
And good for you for posting your video. Totally fun!!
~Keri

jill - OH MY GOSH! HOW HYSTERICALLY HAPPY I WAS TO GET YOUR COMMENT ON MY BLOG!!! I HAVE BEEN A HUGE FAN FOR SO LONG – LOVE THE PICS OF YOUR LIFE! WE HAVE TWO GOLDENDOODLES SO ALWAYS SHOW THE KIDS PICS OF WAFFLE. YES, I LOVE KASEY AND WE HAVE BECOME FRIENDS BECAUSE OF BLOGGING – HOW AWESOME IS THAT? XO~JILL

Charity - So fabulous!! What an awesome way to spend an afternoon – thanks for the idea!

Krista - Love you and your mom suit, that was awesome!! Who knew 2 tarps and some shampoo could be so much fun? Love Scott’s “I’m awesome” at the end of his ride. Thanks for sharing. Gosh it looks like it was a lot of fun!

alamama - very cute! loved seeing this in the morning! glad to see a happy face on you!

Susan - I absolutely love this idea. How smart. The regular slip-n-slides are way to short anyway. Yours works well, but it looks like you have a little bit of a down slope. I bet it would be great for innertubing down in the snow too. Awesome idea. I’m heading to Home Depot.

Megan - This is so awesome, how fun! I think everyone got more than a dollar right? Great idea and love the price tag!

Nicole Q. - You are such a good sport . . . i think that’s one thing that makes you a great momma!!!
You had the perfect place to put that thing too — we used to do that for youth group events. Crazy fun!!

Sara @ It's Good to be Queen - that video is happy. πŸ™‚

Dina - You make me laugh! Your blog and my coffee are the best two things of my morning:-)

Kelly - That is awesome! My parents have a huge hill at their house and we were trying to convince them to let us do this on their hill. So far it’s a no go but maybe if I show them this they’ll change their minds.

Elizabeth McDonald - Awesome….that is all I can say…AWESOME!

Niki - What a blast! You guys are such fun parents! And your swimsuit is a CUTE mom suit!

amy - I LOVE it, that’s awesome!

Kelly - I absolutely loved your post. What makes it so fun is your participation. It’s nice to see you in it once in a while! I love the yelling “Dollar, dollar! You’ve got a buck!” You guys are so much fun. Your kids are going to have the best memories and stories to tell later on!

Cate O'Malley - love the idea – even better that everyone can have a blast in their own backyard without spending a fortune – great memories!

Becky @ Farmgirl Paints - Oh that looks like some good ole’ fashioned fun. You are so cute slidin’ down the tarp..4 seconds just wasn’t enough. I wanted to hear you talk:)

jess - you rock!!!!! how could you not go down that great slip-n slide!!!!!

Shann - Those are such good pictures Meg! It looks like you had such a good time with your best friends up here in Michigan. I remember doing a slip-in-slide a few years ago. You are right…it is a bit harder for us moms. πŸ™‚ Your swim suit is really cute by the way! Have a good Monday! πŸ™‚

jackie - Looks like you all had a great time. We had friends that had a gigantic piece of rubber that you make inner tubes from, and they did the same thing. They put it down, kept the sprinkler running over it, and baby shampooed, and baby oiled it up, and the kids had a Blast!! It is so hot here too. 100’s w/ the heat index everyday. What a way to stay cool, and I bet you were sore. Have a great week. Jackie

Barb - When you look up “good sport” in the dictionary, there’s a picture of you! πŸ˜‰
Looks like it was a great time. What a fun person you are.

Meg B. - looks like fun, now to find a hill….

Gemma @ Musings of a gem - Great idea!! I bet your fronts were really sore after all that though.
Your family seem so fun : )
Gemma x

Michelle - Meg
When you started this blog, did you think you were going to change the world? Because that is what you are doing. God Bless you girl!! I live in Australia, I love your blog (I ‘met’ you through Cora’s Mum Jess) and I swear you make me a better Mum. I read your blog, I come up with ideas from what you write and my kids love them.
Thank you!

Nikki - should read… so much fun…. I should proof read my comments πŸ™‚

Nikki - That looks like so much.
Thanks for sharing the video…. made me lol πŸ˜€

Tammy - That looks like so much fun! Thanks for sharing the video of you!

Georgia - haha i love your video! its brilliant. The music made me crack up. You look lovely Meg, wouldnt even know you have had 5 kids!
YUou should post video’s of the family more often, its nice to see everyone in real time.
xx

Trish - how fun!!
and I love that you posted that video of you!

Tasha Griffin - Oh, how fun! We have had some good times on giant homemade slip and slides as well…baby shampoo is a MUCH better idea than baby oil like we used! Looks like you guys had a blast!

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - 4 seconds?! Hilarious!!! πŸ™‚

7 things.

1.  i have been listening to Pandora all week with the station i typed in of the Jackson 5.

it is making our morning chaos a little fun…..we're groovin'.

2.  this was on the radio this morning on the way to school.

i was belting it out and dancing too….oh oh oh ohohoh!

it was 20 years ago that i went to their concert in Kansas City with steffany.

they wore rainbow colored sequined blazers.

3. i bet you didn't know i am really good at naming movies from another room…by sound not sight.

i will be doing something in the kitchen and craig calls to me "name that movie"

it's just like name that tune….

i am a name-that-movie expert.  (self appointed expert of a game that i made up)

4.  my 15th anniversary was last week…..and i forgot!    but craig didn't.

5.  i made coffee on sunday about 2 minutes after i got out of bed.

i forgot to put the pot in the machine.

the whole pot of coffee ended up on the counter and floor.

     niiiiiiiiiice.

6.  i have a attack plan for cleaning my house over the next 8 days that i will be home.

     2 rooms a day…deep cleaning….UGH.

     but it must be done.

i started with the craft room so i would feel like i could breathe.

and today is the boys' room.  MAJOR mess.

they "clean" it on saturdays but i am going to CLEAN it.

with The New Kids on in the background.

7.   wild sunflowers are everywhere….

Talb

Liz - I used to suffer BIG TIME with this crap! I have been cotleemlpy delivered from anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia, ocd and much more for over 5 years now. No it’s not a, you gotta pay something nonsense. I want to tell as many people as I can because I am cotleemlpy healed of it all without having to a pay cent! Check out my channel or go to my site: fuentesevangelism . com. You will not be disappointed!

Sabine - I used to suffer BIG TIME with this crap! I have been comtlepely delivered from anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia, ocd and much more for over 5 years now. No it’s not a, you gotta pay something nonsense. I want to tell as many people as I can because I am comtlepely healed of it all without having to a pay cent! Zeynep - Sensitization , Bewilderment and Fear. This person is treppad in the anxiety state due to extreme sensitization, both physical and mental ( you can see his nerves are edge all the time). This sensitization is kept alive by belwiderment ( he does not know why he feels like this and wants to be his old self agian if only he knew how) and the most powerful emotion FEAR. Unknowinlgy he adds FEAR to FEAR. He needs to PASS THROUGH the fear the right way and not avoid or quiten it. DR Weekes

Kristine Robb - talby’s shirt is awesome!

Trina McNeilly - Love this post.. always love knowing random things about people especially when they are things like making coffee without the pot… i do things like that too.
ps- if you get a chance stop by my blog.. i’m having a fun giveaway….i think you will like!
Have a great rest of your week!
xx Trina

Val Russell - I have done the same thing with the coffee TONS of times… but at a restaurant that I work at! The coffee pots are right behind the counter where people sit, so they always notice and laugh.
And one of my talents is naming a movie that a certain song is on… Like in the car hearing a song and knowing what movie(s) it is on. Don’t know why I’m good at that. But it’s fun.

tami - Love the new look too cute!

Becky @ Farmgirl Paints - That is a great plan of attack. My house needs a thorough cleaning, but all at once seems overwhelming. Two rooms at a time may be doable. Thanks.
Love that you screw up too. I’ve been running around with my head cut off lately. That just lends it’s self to screw ups.

Heather Richter - I have done the coffee thing, danced to NKOB, but I can’t name people or movies to save my life. I need the “mom translator” from Saturday Night Live. Thanks for the flashback. :)~Heather Richter

Courtney - I started playing the video and my two year old got up and started dancing all around! So cute to see my kid jam out the music of “my day”. lol!

Angela - LOVE IT!!!
I am such a NKOTB fan. I went to a concert 19 1/2 years ago. LOL
I actually had tickets to a concert this past summer. I was going to go w/my husband. But then he had to go out of town. So my mom was going to go with me. But then they MOVED the concert ahead a week, and SHE was out of town (as was my husband still). So I sold them. It was a two-hour drive and I didn’t want to go alone. I’m still bitter.
I have recently discovered Pandora and LOVE it! I’m sure you know this, but you are aware, of course, that you can combine artists for a station, right? I have a New Kids/Debbie Gibson station that rocks my socks off! πŸ™‚

se7en - Oh good grief – I have never even thought of your coffee project, what a nightmare… but I never remember our anniversary or the poor man’s birthday!!! The luck of the draw I guess… I could remember his birthday and forget his lunch!!!

DreamGirlLisa - Love the picture! And I like your idea for the cleaning. Made the rainbow cake this weekend for my daughter’s 18th bday, it turned out great, she loved it!

ashley - i love pandora…it also makes my daily activities a little bit more groovin’.

Jennifer - I LOVED Jordan. I practiced writing Mrs. Jordan Knight on my notebooks! My mom took me and my cousin to see them in Wichita. We had a NKOTB wall with all of the magazine pictures of Jordan and her favorite Joey. When I hear their songs, I can’t help but smile and sing along!
Last week, I told my husband to throw the pancake griddle away beacause it wouldn’t heat up. Turns out, I forgot to plug it in!

Betsy - I was also at the New Kids concert in KC. I didn’t realize it was 20 years ago. It was my first concert. I still talk about the fact that I went to it … AND … Young MC was the opener. Wouldn’t it be funny if all of us were sitting near each other?
Happy cleaning! I wish I had the same plan to clean my condo this week. Maybe you’ll inspire me a bit! πŸ™‚

Dana - I totally play the ‘name that movie’ game with my husband, he tries to stump me all the time and gets mad when I get it. I can even name movies I’ve never seen, as long a I have seen the trailer at some point. Great list, I love your blog.

Jaime - I too love your blog…and the coffee pot one cracks me up. That is so something I would (and probably will) do. πŸ™‚

Kate - I was a Jordan gal πŸ™‚ LOL – awesome song – it is cracking me up! 7th grade I think? πŸ™‚

Lauren - I love your blog!!! It’s one of the first things I read in the morning and it always makes me smile πŸ™‚

amy - let’s see here…
-love pandora. i like to type in dixie chicks or led zeppelin or sometimes both. fun stuff!
-NKOTB…yep. went with my seventh grade boyfriend and he was mad at me the whole time because i wanted to attack jordan.
-my anniversary is coming up…my husband reminded me yesterday!
-hate it when coffee pots can’t fix their own malfunctions!
-can you say cleaning frenzy?? come on over.
-talby is too cute.
oh, and one more thing, thank you for your sweet comment about my ben boy. it made me smile. {hugs}

carissa... brown eyed fox - meg… you are happiness!

Meg - i too was at the nkotb concert in kc 20 years ago. although i’d rather not put the number of how many years ago that was. wow!! still love them to this day.

Jenny Wenzel - Hey Meg…love your new kids video…I never got to go to their concert “back in the day”, but my friends and I went when the came to KC last November…it was a BLAST! A bunch of 30-something women screaming for these guys!!! What a memory!

Flower Patch Farmgirl - You are rainbow-rific.
And I wasn’t allowed to listen to NKOTB. I revolted a couple years later by memorizing most of the Metallica Black album. Showed them.

sarah w - I have the same cleaning plan this week. A room at a time, deep cleaning.
I HATE cleaning. But I HATE living amongst a mess.

Christina - I LOVE THIS POST!!
I was such a New Kids fan…I went to a concert and peed in my pants a little I screamed so hard. How embarrassing is that?! My mom was so sweet, she took me and a bunch of friends to a concert at the Richmond Col. and then she wouldn’t let us have the binoculars. It was also about 20 years ago. Crazy. And that song has been stuck in my head for several days for some reason-weird. I thought it was such a riot to see it here!
And I have done a couple of similar things like your coffee pot story the last couple of weeks. I also had to share them with the world. Funny stuff.
And you are majorly inspiring with your deep clean…I was about to tear into our living room and our schoolroom, oh, and our computer room. Blech. But seriously needs to be done, just like you said. Wouldn’t it be fun to get together with a group of your friends and clean together? Just go from one house to the other! It makes me miss my mom. Or my sister-in-law. It’s so much easier and fun when someone is with you. Since I’m all alone, I guess I need to be Hangin’ Tough. πŸ™‚
Have a great day, and hope you get lots done.

fanee - I totally play “name-that-movie” too! The smallest little snippet is all I need- Glad there’s someone out there who shares my “gift” πŸ™‚

Jill @ Barnes Yard - Oh I could really get some deep cleaning done with NKOTB in the background!

amy d - man, if you can deep clean your whole house in 8 days, then i must really have a lot of stuff….i gave myself until halloween! bonjour!

Summer - I was pretty into Jon…I liked the shy guys.

Erin Drennon - Love Love Love New Kids, I too went to their concert in Kansas City (that is where I live) what a blast from the past. They were on the The Today show a few years ago and I was singing the songs in front of my girls and they thought I was so weird. I tried explaining that I loved New Kids like they love Jonas Bros.

Molly Pearce - Oh gees girl you just brought back memories with that song. That was me and my sisters first concert and we screamed so hard that we had sore throats the next day. My mom got us the bedding, sleepng bags and dolls. Me and my sister would play Barbies for hours and pretend that they got married to Jordan and Donnie. HAHAHA, fun times!! Love reading your blog everyday chicky!!!
~Molly P

adrienneK - my husband loooves pandora radio it’s pretty neat!!

Kelly - GREAT photo of Talby! Fun list! Kelly

Keri ~ ForeverFoldingLaundry - I have done that coffee trick as well. It’s such a mess. My condolences.
Have fun with the cleaning. Funny that my boys’ room is my least favorite room of the house to CLEAN as well!

purejoy - i know i can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, but a little new kids along for the ride never hurt. i love that idea!!

Nicoleigh - I like the sunflowers! That is one thing I don’t see a log of in Iowa.
But a comment on Pandora…you get only 40 hours of free music a month. Last month I used it up the first week…since I had it playing every day at work. But I still love it!

Kathy - OMG great list, I can’t believe you forgot your anniversary!!
Deep cleaning good luck with that, I think I have ADD when cleaning! Love your sunflower picture, so cute.

misty - new kids!! yay! i am glad someone else likes them and remembers them from when they 1st started! sometimes i feel so old! love the sunflowers! wish we had them growing like that here in Tulsa!

Laura Phelps - #5 is HEART BREAKING. I actually cried a bit for you.

Sarah - Love the 2 rooms a day!…think that might motivate me!

Erin - I had NKOTB everything – even pillowcases – pathetic. Never went to a concert though – just to Boyz II Men πŸ™‚
And we were just singing The Right Stuff at a party last night – so funny!

Lori Danelle - the coffee. . .I have totally done that!! Luckily, now I have a coffee maker that holds the coffee until the pot is in place. Or at least in theory it does. I think that feature is working a little less well than it did originally.
Now, I just find the milk in odd places. Like the cupboard with the sippy cups.
http://loridanelle.blogspot.com

Michelle - Joey WAS the hottest. Ahhhh memories of my mom driving 2 hours in a snowstorm to take my sister, me, and several friends to the concert. She must have REALLY loved us.
Thanks for this post this morning Meg, it really made me smile.

Miranda - NKOTB. Yes. I also adore ‘name that movie.’ I think in high school I quoted so many movies that I rarely spoke original thoughts.

Starnes Fam - I cried at their concert. Seriously. I did. Not sure why. I think it’s what I thought I should do.

Jess - happy belated anniversary. i am in “organization” mode right now, ’cause i procrastinated getting it done before school started. i like to do a deep cleaning in the fall more so than the spring. i luuuuv fall!
delightful pic. love it.

Julia - We went rollerskating this weekend and in a very “uncool” move I participated in a race. I got put with the other mommas. Apparently this embarrasses one’s children.
I won by the way.

Sarah V. - Donnie was and still is my favorite! Only I didn’t get to go to their concert until this year and man was it fun!

Jaime @ Simply Arizona - NKOTB was the best! πŸ™‚ It was Jordan for me! πŸ™‚
Deep cleaning, huh? Yeah, I had a 4 day weekend and was supposed to do the same. I managed to get just about nothing done. =(

cori barney - NKOTB FOREVER!!! Donnie still makes me light headed!

Sara - Oh, I was so in love with Joey. Now I feel old.

i love the demo derby.

i am not kidding.

i love to go to the demolition derby in my home town.

it's a fun night…everyone is there to have a good time…and sometimes you get muddy!

raise your hand if you like to go to demo derbies too!

i knew i wasn't the only one.

we sat with our friend joel and his two grandsons.

it was packed.

we sat on the side facing the sun and it was so bright for the first hour.

blinding sun.

the drivers wear helmets while they drive (so we can be safe…says dora the explorer)

they have no glass and i was told by kids this year that the gas tank is in the car…so it won't explode.

correct me if i am wrong.

i probably am.

IMG_7688

they paint their cars all different…this striped one was my favorite this year…unique.

but i will always cheer for a pink car also.

IMG_7699

and it is really loud.

when all those engines are running at the same time it is LOUD.

they have 60 seconds to get their car running again if they are stuck or their engine dies.

if they can't they have to break off their flag in their window and sit and wait till the heat if over.

(again…correct me if i am wrong)

IMG_7683

this is a "demo official" as you can see.

they tell the cars when to start…if they need to stop…help them if their tires fall off…etc.

IMG_7671

seriously.

the derby runs in heats of about 7 cars each until only two cars are left.

so you sit for about 15 minutes in between heats.

one break you have to go get a snack…we just got pop because the line was too long for funnel cakes.

there is country music blaring over the speaker system.

you have to have ambiance you know?

another break always has to be waiting in line for the porta-potties.  UGH! so gross.

and another highlight is the guys in a golf cart throwing out demo t-shirts to the crowd.

i want a demo t-shirt.

IMG_7696

after a tractor pulls the cars out that are dead this truck sprays water over the dirt to keep it wet.

when it's really muddy the cars can't drive as fast…(so we can be safe…)

notice the guys in the orange shirts…they are texting!??

IMG_7646

IMG_7692

between heats the kids can be on the fence…not during.

safety.

the girl in the pink tee and sunglasses was shaking her little booty to the music…it was so cute.

IMG_7661

the cars parade around the arena before the heat starts.

IMG_7721

sun was starting to set…that is mud flying in the air.

IMG_7656

there are a lot of fire fighters, EMT and police to keep everything under control.

so would like to hear a little of this derby?

thanks to joel and his cool flip camera…i have video for you!

(and now i really want a flip camera too)

the first one is just us in between heats…

the drunk man was a problem and we asked him to leave…finally…he did.

i told you i was a weirdo-magnet.

this proves it.

and now you are dying to see the real thing…i know it.

you want to feel the action!

crank up your sound so it feels like you are there.

you are all redneck mamas like me who love to watch cars smash each other.

did you love it?!

HA!

IMG_7741

there was even a compact car heat.

a ford pinto!  (aaron meyers i miss you.)

our group was really wanting lloyd's red car to win…screaming for lloyd.

IMG_7735

but Cory won.

he and his buddies were pumped!

IMG_7742

this year there was a fireworks show before the final round.

and they were really good…i was impressed.

IMG_7758

the Hamm brothers were the two final cars…kind of the usual thing.

they are "famous" for winning the derbies in hillsboro.

jason (left) has his wife's name on his car…CARLA…now that is love.

she probably had to put up with a lot of him working in the shop to get a winning car.

i think her name should be on the entire side next year…end to end.

just a thought carla.

IMG_7767

another night of small town goodness.

grateful for stuff like this…even if it is really hick and redneck.

it is too fun to care.

Jordan Livingston - We’re the officials every year it is fun

Sebastian Gaydos - I’m still thinking why most of you love watching demo derby. My wife loves watching ’em too and I think she’s addicted to it! There’s this one time that she even wanted to join and use our car. And I’m like, “What?! Our car?! Are you out of your mind?!” Hahaha! But still, I love her for that. =)

Christian Louboutin Platforms - “It turned out to be one of the best short pieces I have ever done, and Kate Wilson, editor at Scholastic, read it to her little girl, and they both loved it, and she emailed me in the new year and asked if they could publish it as an illustrated book.

truck rental - This sure seems like a perfect night out! TO be honest- I didn’t get the “fun” you were talking about at first- but going through your pictures- this seems like an amazing event to attend!

chris schroeder - i enjoy running derbies. usually run canton and hillsboro every year, u know my number OU812 just out to have fun!!

Kristine Robb - O.M.G! ha ha i am totally laughing out loud!!!!!!!!!!!! that is HILARIOUS! i think i will have to add a demo derby to my summer-to-do-list next year! your pictures are amazing of course but the video is a nice touch. you could totally score one of those for christmas!

pam - raising my hand! LOVE the demo derby.
eric and i were TOTALLY cracking up at the videos.

jamie - i LOVE demolition derbies. haven’t been to one in years. i think my 5-year-old would LOVE them too. thanks for the video!

Treemama - and i thought i was the only pseudo redneck mama who loves the derby! and this is the first year we went for the derby instead of rodeo night.
we (of course) rooted for the girl driver in the pink car with the peace sign on the side!

simply stork - my husband is an emt and we sometimes get to go and work the races in our area…one time I got to go and due to a double accident I was the one who drove the ambulance…Way Too Cool!
~simply~

Alicia Fulmer (Coach) :) - I.LOVE.THE.DEMO.DERBY!

Lindsay - If I ever make it to Kansas I hope it’s on demo derby night!!

Tess S. - fun, fun, FUN!

emily :] - demo derby… so much fun! its my favorite part of going to the pratt county fair. btw, i love the picture of the fireworks to pieces. not to sound like a creeper, but it’s now my desktop background, i love it that much.

sara - i love a good demo derby too! now for a real county fair.. have you ever heard of hog wrestling??

adrienneK - hmmm im not one for demo derbies BUT it was great getting to see you guys on video!!! yay:)

Dana D @BoysMyJoys - The video was hysterical with all the on-screen comments!
Now I need a lesson on using my fingers and math to determine how long until the sun goes down! I’ve never heard of that before! πŸ™‚

Danielle - Oh, we were talking about going to the demo…. Thanks for the video, now we can experience a little of what we missed. My brother drove in it so many years ago—really a lot of FUN! Next time wait in line for one of the funnel cakes those two are some of the NICEST people I know!

rachel - WOW that looks fab fun. I’m with Sophie’s comment, I too thought the derby was only on something like the ‘Simpsons’ – doh I’m an idiot!

Sophie - I’m gonna sound like SUCH an idiot but I didn’t think those derby’s even existed. Forgive me, I’m English. I’ve only ever seen them in cartoons and stuff. πŸ˜›
I seriously wanna go to one now! (:

Peggy Rice - Okay, now my 2 year old thinks you are the coolest as well!!! He says, “more, more, more!”. Jaylee says, “now that’s how you smoosh a car.” Paris needs a race like this.

Laura Phelps - Hmm.
OK.
Um…
Is there a Starbucks close to this?
That might be the only way to get me there.
BUT.
In all fairness…I have yet to see your video.
It is LATE here.
And my husband is sleeping.
I may have a different opinion in the morning.
Hmph. Just when you think ya know a girl!

dawn - Okay, I didn’t read through all the comments and maybe someone already mentioned this — but what about the SMELL?!? Did it smell like…burning rubber and overheating car?!? I grew up in rural Minnesota. The demo derby comes every summer and my mom started taking me young. (If you saw my mom — you’d never guess her to be a demo fan — but she was pure awesomeness and exposed me to all kinds of cool things like this.) I miss them. They must have them somewhere in Oregon — I’ll have to research. My daughter is now four — it’s time. Glad you had fun — and I wish I could’ve been there! πŸ™‚

Beth - As entertaining and fun as you make it sound, I still don’t think I would like the demo derby. Enjoy reading about AND seeing your time there πŸ™‚

Carol S. - Totally agree. I’m from suburbs of Chicago, and we love the demo derby out here too. Cute videos! You guys have a little southern drawl happening over by you. Very fun. You’re too cute. Fun website.

Stephanie - Yes, the derby was exciting, but what I found even more thrilling is that you stood in line to get a “pop” and NOT a “soda”. Finally someone outside of Ohio drinks pop.
I knew I loved Kansas!

Courtney - Oh man, this brings back the memories… back when I was a country girl growing up. We’d go to the county fair each year for demo derby night. One year our machanic even bought my mom’s old tank of a car off her and put it in the derby. They painted it like a pack of fruit striped gum and called it the lifesaver. I cried because it made me sad that our old car hurt (I was little OK!). I miss the fair and the demo derby and the funnel cakes.

Jenn - Looks like a great way to spend an evening! Never been to one… but someday perhaps when Olaf gets a bit older πŸ™‚

Cate O'Malley - I love that you call soda … pop. πŸ™‚

tabitha - i took my two boys to a demo derby like a hundred years ago [ok it was more like 10], they were 11 and 8 and i thought they were gonna love it!!! they didn’t. at all. they were overwhelmed by the awesomeness, that’s what i told myself, later i realized they were both sick with head colds and the noise and fumes probablly nearly killed them. i rule as a great mother! haha…they have, since then, come to appreciate [loudly and with enthusiasm] the joys of the Demo Derby. πŸ™‚

Meg - My favorite was the people watching from the bucket that was suspended 50 feet over the arena. Good times. Check out our blog for my interpretation of the county fair.

Julie - I have never been to a demolition derby -I wouldn’t even know where to find one – so thanks for the vicarious experience through video! That was great.

amy - this had me chuckling–especially the video with the little notes in it. my favorite by far was the “drunk man says yeeehawww!!” reminded me of going to the rodeo by my parents house in new jersey. yup, a RODEO in NEW JERSEY!! good times.
yeehaww!

Christy - You are so funny! My husband & his brother entered the derby at our state fair, several years ago. They didn’t last too long, but they had an absolute blast! The uglier the car, the better. They love to buy old random beat up cars & trash on them, silly boys!

amber - I love small town life! I would have cheered for the pink car too!

TRACI - Not a fan of the derby but LUUUUUUUV the videos. You crack me up with your fancy necklace on at a DERBY with MUD..LOL

Sarah - Would you still like me if I told you that you could’t get me to one of those if it was the last place in the world that sold funnel cakes?

maribeth - love it! especially the pop up video . . . looks like you have a blast!

candice - How fun, I have never been, do they even have them in Cali? You look so cute on the video, the curly hair and your necklace, how cute! More videos please, I love videos!

colleen - I haven’t seen this much Redneck fun since I went to Walmart… thanks for the videos…they were great!

Dana M. - This made me smile. Good to see you at the derby. You captured it in all it’s glory, mud and crazies. Kate spent the entire first 4 heats under the “mud” blanket we brought. When she finally emerged she screamed that this was “The best derby EVER!” To really enjoy an event like this, it helps if you know some of the drivers. The Hamm brothers are usual winners, but they build good cars and this is what they eat and breathe. Growing up across the road from them as kids, we put on our dad’s helmets, lined up our big wheels and trikes and played “demo derby.” What memories. Next year plan on your family coming to our place for supper, then we can “do the derby.”
Let me know when you plan to come to town this week.

Emily D. - We sat on the opposite side no sun, but you have to get there a little earlier! The boys enjoy it, not really my thing, but since I have boys I guess I have to endure it! Kind of wish the Hamms would have more competition, not so fun when you know who will win.

Shawna Landers - This looks just like Abilene’s Central Kansas Free Fair demo night!! I love the demo. It must be a Midwest thing or something but I can’t imagine the fair without it. I didn’t realize that Hillsboro had their fair at the same time!!
Great pictures!
Thanks!
Shawna

Anna Marie - Now wasn’t that a fun post?!? Your hair was super duper cute in that first video ;)|
My brother-in-law drove in a derby 2 weeks ago. Fun stuff!
Have a great evening, Megan πŸ˜‰

Ruth - This looks toooo fun! And for a redneck you are incredibly glamorous πŸ™‚

kelli - thanks for posting– that brings back fun memories! btw, i think you were the best dressed demo derby go-er!

Amanda - ahhh there were fireworks this year? lucky. i had plans so i couldn’t make it. πŸ™ thanks for the recap though. i had some friends in high school who worked on the pit crews. i desperately wanted to be their (better) friend so that i could do it too. oh, and i also want to be friends with the fam who sits in the cherry picker.

Lauren - I love the demo derby too!!! I haven’t been in years! hmmm….maybe that’s an idea for the weekend!
Love your blog – read it every day! Have a great week!

Valerie - This brought back the memories. I am a Tulsa girl, but for “one and a half winters” we lived up in MN (that’s how you count time up there). My husband’s cousin up there invited us to the demolition derby. We had no idea what to expect and showed up in our little preppy Ralph Lauren shorts ensembles only to find ourselves surrounded by rednecks and mud flying up in our hair. It was awesome. It still makes me laugh to this day. I’m back safe and sound again in Tulsa, but I will always love Anoka, MN for its county fair and the hilarious night it gave me. πŸ™‚

Allikayes Mama - I went to a demo derby at the Nebraska State Fair when I was younger…we teased our hair up nice and high…put on lots of makeup…and put on temporary barbwire arm tattoos! We fit right in back then!!! So fun!!!

jennifer - Feelin’ like the dorky city girl here. I only thought they did that in the movies, not in real life! Kinda like when we first moved to CO and I realized that there really are cowboys, too. I have apparently led a very sheltered life and I need to experience more. Your pictures are wonderful, as usual. You’ve got such a gift!

Amanda B - so funny…dave and I had a conversation last night about how much I LOVE demo derbies….we didn’t go last night but we were at the carnival and animals, WISHING I was at the derby, but not sure how a 1 and 2 year old would do. Anyway…I was telling him how much I love them, I really really do. He likes them too, but thought it was funny how much I had to say that I LOVED them! So I’m glad that you love them too! The one in my hometown is AWESOME, way better than Harvey County! I want to go back there next year! I have that redneck/hick streak in me too! It’s kind of fun, I’m not ashamed to admit it.
Sorry to hear about the drunk guy. But glad you guys got him taken care of.

Angela B. - I live in the city and now am so jealous that we don’t have the derby around here. What a blast!

kristin - i’m am HIGHLY avoiding the question from micah about when the demolition derby is…we forgot until it was too late. he is not going to be happy.

Kirsten - Oh I have to ask my parents about this memory…like I was a little girl in the 70’s…Pasadena CA?…and I remember we had these huge ugly green corduroy pillows we would take to sit on at the races – figure 8 racing. Loved it, and wish we had flips back then, lol!

Lori - Wow! that looks really fun! If you hadn’t included the video, I would never have considered it. Thanks!

amy j. - Corey is driving back to Abilene tonight to go to the COMBINE demo derby. Are you jealous? πŸ™‚

Becky @ Farmgirl Paints - Oh yeah! We went last year and our kids had so much fun. You captured it well.

Georgia - Meg, your so glam!! β™₯ a glam red neck mama! lol x

Karen E - Oh I love the demolition derby. Lots of fond memories going to the derby with my grandma at the local fair. My sweet looking grandma screamed and yelled and jumped out of her seat when watching it – she loved it so much!
I lurk on your blog, only discovered it about a month ago and I think your photography is fabulous. πŸ™‚

A pocket full of posies... - Too funny!!! growing-up for fun my dad owned a dirt race track…I was the trophy girl stand-in one night…I was 12…don’t you know that poor guy who won was sadly disappointed!! πŸ™‚

Julia - Have had a migraine for 4 days…even with that I am still laughing at that first video….now I’m confused about division….haven’t heard about the famous Hamm Brothers-feel a little out of it.

Amanda Jo - My husband is a very proud redneck and we go to Cowtown Speedway near Ft. Worth everytime they have a Demo Derby! You have to get there EARLY otherwise you’ll be wading in a sea of Wranglers and cowboy hats.
I think everyone should experience a demo derby at least once in their life time!

misty - off the subject…
have you seen the Disney Family Fun magazine? I just saw it for the 1st time yesterday and picked up a copy… when I was reading it last night I thought just about every project in there would be right up your alley to do with your kiddos!
they have a website
http://www.familyfun.com I haven’t checked it out yet but the magazine is GREAT

misty - omgosh this looks like FUN~ I am in Oklahoma and we have a LOT more rednecks than Kansas ;0) so I am sure there has to be a demoderby around here somewhere!! I MUST go! I am seriously going to look into it because my birthday is coming up and we were going to to go a Tulsa Drillers game, but I think my husband would enjoy this so much more! (& me to) =0)

Jen - My dad drove in demolition derbies up until I was 2 or so. He had a car with all our names on it and I have a picture of my mom posing on it with a small beehive hairdo and pedal pushers. Co-ol.

i almost got up to dance….

that song is just so catchy.

the grandpa with the suit jacket and hammer pants?   HA HA HA HA

and i hope those pants NEVER come back in style.

erin - Shut the door! That is so funny. We just went through some old high school pics at a girls night and one of my girlfriends was wearing a nice royal blue pair with a cute jacket with gold chains to match. Fabulous! Just stumbled across your blog from one blog to another to another and here I am. Love it!

Kelly - Here’s the link to the story about the comeback of the pants –
http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/BeautySecrets/story?id=7769216&page=1

Kathy - So cool I would love to be somewhere when that happens! Can you imgine how long it took Granpa to learn those moves! Love it!

Naomi Williams - saw them on the streets of NYC last week in fact…though they were an understated and tasteful black not the garish gold lamΓ©…
…she said with a hint of sarcasm

Jenn - AWESOME. I totally had a pair. Electric blue with a big black design all over them. They ROCKEd.

Kelly - Funny you said that about the pants…I just saw a new story within the last month on Good Morning America or The Today Show or something like that about the pants making a comeback. It was funny! They really are showing up on runways – not that any of us acutally wear those clothes – but they interviewed MC Hammer about it and I guess the pants are really in stores. I’ll have to see if I can find the link.

amy bell - confession: i have been watching hammer time’s reality tv show that just aired…. love it……love the video!!!

kristin - okay, yes, i HAD THOSE PANTS. oh my.

Teresa - Hi Meg!
Totally off topic from your post.. buuut, I’m redoing my bedroom and have decided the walls will be green. I remembered you had green walls somewhere in your house so I went back and looked at your “Our House” section. Could you tell me what brand and shade your daughter’s green room is? and also the brand/shade you used for your foyer? I want to run down and buy a few samples to make my choice and I just love how they look in your pictures.
Thank you!

Kimberli - HILARIOUS!! Couldn’t keep my feet still! =)

Darby - Oh Meg…. they have them at Target… I think they’re coming back, or trying to come back. Not for me though… never ever. I’ve seen that video and it’s HILARIOUS!

Mary Elizabeth - That is freaky and too funny!!! Love the grandpa too!!!

Susan - That whole show with JT was hilarious. Love him!

traci - that is great. i have never really been a justin timberlake fan, but i am now. he is hilarious when he is on SNL!!
